WANT TO HAVE A GREAT ACTIVE LIVING EXPO EXPERIENCE? WE CAN HELP.

Whether it’s your first or your sixth Active Living – or anywhere in between – there’s always a lot to see and do.

We want our guests to enjoy themselves but not become overwhelmed. That’s why we’ve come up with the following helpful strategies.

• Ask for help! There are more than 20 “Event Staff” members in black T-shirts who are here for the sole reason to help guests and vendors have a good day. We’ll be happy to point you in the right direction or answer a question.

• It’s OK to take a break. There are plenty of chairs all around the Expo area. If you need a longer pause, the MAX Lounge is right down the hall and has a wonderful menu of food and drink.

Today, they’re even serving $5 mimosas.

• Pet some puppies! Our friends at SpokAnimal have brought some puppies and kitties that need homes. You don’t have to take one home but you’re welcome to come by for a quick pet.

• Read this program. Our official guide gives info about the speakers, the vendors, and other interesting parts of the event. You can plan your day around which speaker to see.

• Share your feedback! If you have a suggestion, we’d love to hear it. Please tell one of the staff or take a moment to fill out one of the cards by the Prize Booth.

EASY PLANNING for new horizons

Among other pieces of advice Oscar Wilde gave the world, he once encouraged people to “travel far, travel often, and travel without regrets.”

This is still good advice for anyone, regardless of their age or occupation.

Travel is the perfect opportunity to see new scenery, have other experiences, and see things from new perspectives.

It’s true that some people like staying put in their comfortable surroundings. Nothing wrong with this!

Others have more of a yearning to see and do more. Nothing wrong with this either. In some cases, taking a trip can help you appreciate what you have at home.

This year’s Active Living will offer a variety of opportunities for those

wishing to travel more, including organized trips around the country. It will also offer some suggestions for ways to explore your own community – even if you’ve lived here for years, we bet there are still some places that are still on your list to check out one of these days.

Today, there’s even a term for checking out the exciting things in one’s

community – a stay-cation. It’s easy on the budget as well as satisfying if you’ve got the travel bug.

Even if a major trip isn’t in the cards in the near future, we hope Active Living can give you some easy and delightful ideas for how to start your research for a dream trip.

As a community organization, it is our responsibility to give back to local organizations who share the same values as we do.

When families choose Heritage Funeral & Cremation, they help put funds back into the Spokane Community through our robust Community Partner Program.

We also give back to local families through our children and infant program; where we provide free funeral and cremation services for children up to 6 years old and discounted rates for children 6 to 17 years of age.

Audrey’s Boutique always happy to help set shoppers up with style Fashion Show

Victoria Ferro is the owner of Audrey’s Boutique on N. Division St. in Spokane. She brings more than 35 years of experience in women’s ready-to-wear and eveningwear, from buying to executive management.

Ferro plans a fashion show at Active Living of the latest styles for spring and summer. The event gives guests a sampling of apparel that not only looks good but can be purchased locally, from casual to formal.

She moved to Spokane in 1996 and earned certification as a

Certified Mastectomy fitter while working at Audrey’s, which she purchased in 2012. Victoria is known as “The Bra Whisperer.” Her greatest satisfaction is teaching women the art of dressing and looking their best daily.

Styles may come and go, but Audrey’s Boutique has been a legacy store. For nearly 55 years, it has provided style direction to shoppers about what looks good and what can help their life. Audrey’s specializes in personal service, whether it’s looking for the perfect attire for a special

event or need fitting for a new bra.

Victoria and her staff are all dedicated to making new and longtime shoppers alike feel welcome – and fantastic.

Women of any age with questions about their sizes, style or what to wear for different occasions are always welcome to stop by Audrey’s.

“This store is for women like myself,” Ferro said. “Sixty is the new 40. We are still hip, but we don’t want to look like we went to

the junior department. We want to look fresh.”

The shop is also the top place to go in eastern Washington for formal wear – whether it’s a black tie gala or you’re the mother of the bride or groom. Shoppers can also find great apparel for upcoming cruises, island adventure or warm-weather vacations.

One of the important services Audrey’s likes to provide is postmastectomy fittings. The specially certified and trained staff can help any woman who has had

this procedure performed. These experts can help find just the right bra during a time that is often fraught with fear and low selfconfidence.

“The bras are what started the store, but I try to help the whole woman,” Ferro said. “We take the time to educate women on what looks well and why. When a woman feels beautiful, her confidence shows!” To learn more visit Audrey’s on Facebook and Instagram.

Enjoy Sweet Moments With Bundt Cakes

The Spokane Valley location was also the site for the 2023 and 2024 Active Living Expos, and guests and vendors alike were appreciative of everything the venue had to offer. This includes the MAX Restaurant and Lounge which features an extensive food and beverage menu for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

In addition to the quality food choices, the lounge is proud to include an awardwinning selection of wine, beer, cider, and mixed drinks. Many of the beverages are made in the region, including some beers brewed especially for this establishment. Besides well-appreciated mixed drinks like mimosas and Bloody Marys, MAX also serves its signature lemonade, available in several flavors and in alcohol and nonalcoholic versions.

The handcrafted fruity springtime lemonade includes a garnish of fresh herbs, colorful fruit slices, and is pure ice-cold refreshment.

When selecting a Bloody Mary, guests can choose their favorite blend of vodka and salt, decorate it with several choices of condiments, and spice it up with more than 40 types of hot sauces. It also enjoys creating community partnerships, such as the “Wine by Cougs” wine list created with support from Washington State University alumni. It also hosts a monthly winemaker event where the staff gets to sample various varietals

and vintages to aid their knowledge, and a popular “First Wednesday” local art and wine tasting social for the community. The establishment has been recognized by Wine Spectator for more than a decade due to its strong selection of wines, knowledgeable staff, and strong customer service. It also received the magazine’s Best Award of Excellence for many years, including 2024. The more than 450 wines range from regional wineries to exotic blends from around the world. Wine Spectator also recognized Mirabeau Park Hotel and Convention Center for stateof-the-art wine storage rooms and proper storage protocols.

As part of the fun for Active Living 2025, guests can enjoy $5 mimosas all day!

The mimosa menu includes mango, huckleberry and the MAX Mimosa.

Please keep Mirabeau Park Hotel and Convention Center in mind the rest of year, whether you’re looking for a nice getaway, want to organize an event for a club or group, or even an enjoyable night out.

Get Involved Learn how to reach out

We’re all in this together! Even though it feels a little too easy some days to focus how we’re different in terms of topics like politics, religion, even sports teams, we ultimately have more in common than what divides us. We’re all trying to make our way in the world, since it can be tough out there.

So anything that can bring us together as fellow humans should be celebrated.

Part of the value of the Active Living Expo is that we present ways that people can become a better, stronger part of their local community.

This could be everything from volunteer opportunities at a nonprofit to learning about local companies that offer products and services that can help your life – and help you meet others. Want to grow your community and get out and meet others? Our event vendors will

offer all sorts of ways to interact. While there’s nothing wrong with taking some time for yourself and enjoying some periods of privacy to recharge your social batteries, there’s also value in reaching out and connecting with others, whether it’s crafting clay items or for fostering kittens.

Not sure where to get started? Find a vendor that seems interesting to you and your life, and ask how you can

get involved, especially in a volunteer capacity. Or check out some of the seminars, which will offer the chance to hear from area experts and ask them questions.

Look forward to your phone calls with fast, accurate captions on a large screen so you know you're catching every word. CaptionCall is a service for people with hearing loss who need capions to use the phone.

Be The Best Why paying attention makes a difference

Health shouldn’t be thought of as something only to worry about in the future. Whatever your age, it should be something that you’re always keeping in mind. Why? Because focusing on wellness on a regular basis goes a long way to helping you reduce the risk of – or at least be ready for -- problems later in life.

If car comparisons work for you, we’re all encouraged to check in with

our favorite mechanic from time to time. A few observations and adjustments might be recommended now and then, which can cut down on the risk of larger problems in the future, especially if these problems are ignored or postponed.

Every age has different health needs to consider, which is why a good primary provider is important as well as quality insurance coverage.

Our Active Living Expo hopes to provide a variety of health and wellness resources in our community for every age, from seniors wanting to make sure they have adequate coverage to younger people making sure they keep themselves well-maintained. And every age should learn options to stay active physically, such as regular walks, hikes, or runs. You can even find ways to make staying fit fun, such as taking up golf or

pickleball.

Then there’s mental health which is also important. Look for ways to keep your brain active and engaged as well! Our speakers and vendors will present some useful options, from local libraries to classes to learn new subjects.

ELG Estate Planning can help you get there.

Enjoy your retirement years!

Planning Sometimes going idle can be fun

Let’s hear it for a good work ethic! Our American culture was pretty much founded on the core principles of working hard while finding pleasure in working hard. Many of us have also had this value reinforced by parents and grandparents, who are always happy to share their perspective and experience about the importance of putting in the hours and paying the dues.

But here’s a secret – you can still

enjoy working hard and also enjoy NOT working hard.

Being able to pause and enjoy some leisure time can be good for the brain, body, and soul. Taking time for fun can rejuvenate you before you jump back into the rat race. A period of leisure can also be a lovely reward for an extended period of working hard, whether it’s enjoying being idle at home for a few days, a relaxing staycation, or something amazing like a

long-anticipated cruise.

Leisure time is different for everyone but at the Active Living Expo we hope to present all sorts of appealing definitions.

Want to take an organized vacation and see amazing sights? Want to enjoy a solo adventure in nature? Want a puppy to cuddle with when you get home from work? Want to figure out why pickleball is catching

on everywhere? You’ll find these options and more.

We hope this event can be an optimal occasion to learn to embrace leisure. We’re not saying to give up the daily grind, especially if you truly enjoy aspects of it. But we will be glad to offer opportunities to enjoy the fruits of your labor, whether it’s enjoying a new hobby or getting back into a past one.

Your Finances

Did you work hard enough to now enjoy the good life?

Is it time for you to start enjoying the good life, whatever that may be?

If the answer is yes, you’re in good company. Retirement is something that many look forward to and something that keeps many people motivated during their working years.

It can be a time when you start to enjoy your efforts, and many people

fill their days with fun hobbies like golf, travel, volunteering, and visiting family and friends.

But there are some challenges, of course. Will you have enough money? Do you need to go back to work? Do you need to find different work? Will you be bored? What happens if you or family members need medical care? What kind of legacy

do you want to leave for your family if something happens to you?

All of these are valid questions, and our current system can be confusing about all sorts of details.

We hope that Active Living Expo can be a starting place to get some answers to these questions. We have invited a variety of financial experts

who can give you tips for any point of your life, whether retirement age is coming soon or decades from now.

There are always things you can be doing, including simply putting money aside now to help you have a brighter future.
