KEYNOTE SPEAKER MULTICARE: DR. SHAUN PETERSON “My Mind Says Go but My Joints Say No”

V

isitors to the Active Living Expo will have the opportunity to hear from Dr. Shaun Peterson, M.D, Orthopedics, from MultiCare Rockwood Clinic. He’ll share information about orthopedic trends and how he and others can help reduce pain. His presentation “My Mind Says Go but My Joints Say No” will discuss understanding and optimizing musculoskeletal health in the face of life experience.

walk and run again, or made that winning basket or touchdown!

What should student athletes keep in mind to lower the risk of sports-related injuries in the future? A great problem today is the single sport athlete and repetitive stress. The body needs diversity of motion as does the mind. As we lock kids into a sport track at 6 and 7 years old, we do a great disservice to their bodies. Resilience in life and sport comes from being well rounded and cross training.

How has technology improved access and treatment for hip and knee replacements?

DR. SHAUN PETERSON Shaun Peterson, M.D, Orthopedics, joined MultiCare Rockwood Clinic in August 2010. He received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and his medical degree from the University of Texas in Galveston. Dr. Peterson is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and belongs to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, California Orthopaedic Association and the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Any new claim for improvement in joint replacement takes 5-9 years to evaluate because our results are so good. With improved manufacturing and processes, we are able to predictably place joints in the most optimum position for the body to heal and move. Moreover, our understanding of pain and inflammation pathways have allowed us to specifically target critical points of pain both preoperatively and postoperatively, making the experience much less painful, and allow us to avoid narcotics much more.

What appeals to you most about the orthopedic side of health care? I have the best job in medicine! Orthopedics is a wonderful profession. Every day I get to work with hope. Hope to reduce pain, hope to regain a beloved activity, hope to physically regain independence after short or long term disabilities. It is a great time to be alive with the advances that have been made to try to restore movement. The surgeries are challenging but predictable, and one of my favorite things is when someone comes back after surgery and says they don’t hurt, can

What makes the Inland Northwest unique in terms of its available resources for orthopedics? We have a great group of orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, hospitals and surgery centers to meet the orthopedic needs of the community. Valley Hospital, for example, just received a 5 star rating as the best hospital in Eastern Washington and is the only hospital to receive the advanced accreditation in hip and knee replacement.

Financial | Retirement

Retirement matches your finances

Make sure your

By TERRY BAIN Marketing Correspondent

T

hough you’ve likely been planning for retirement for years, if not decades, it’s never too late to take a look at that plan and ask “Is there anything I might be doing better?” With this thought in mind, here are six things to consider when looking at your retirement plan to ensure you’re on the right track.

1. FULLY FUNDED ACCOUNTS If you are not completely maxing out your employer’s plan or sending what you might otherwise consider “disposable income” into an IRA, you likely could be creating a bigger payout than you currently are. When you turn 50, you can even make catch-up contributions to regular plans for even more savings. As of 2019, Pre-Tax 401(k) catch-up limits for participants who reach age 50 before the calendar year is over are an extra $6,000, and IRA accounts allow for an extra $1,000 every year.

you end end up en p draining most mos st o all ll off it it on on something you orr al unfo un fore rese seen. For example, iiff yo you u or y our spouse unforeseen. your develop serious or long-term health problems, what looks like a well-planned portfolio can end up looking like a pile of leaves and feathers. Long-term care and life insurance policies shouldn’t just be considered “good ideas.” They are an investment in a future that is largely unknown, and purchasing them while still relatively young (in your 50s rather than your 60s, for instance), can save you a bundle in premiums.

3. DEBT If you still have a lot of car loans, credit cards, or other forms of high-interest debt, prioritize eliminating these as soon as possible. Interest is eating away at your savings, and so long as you are relying on credit for current purchases, you probably don’t have a realistic idea of what your expenses might be once you retire. Furthermore, once you wrangle your debt it will free up more cash for savings.

2. INSURE YOUR FUTURE

4. YOUR PORTFOLIO ISN’T A CRAP SHOOT

Saving a bunch of money for retirement is one thing, but it’s not going to do you much good if

Investing is always a bit of a gamble, but as you creep closer to retirement, it’s likely a good time to

take a little less risk out of your portfolio. Though stocks can be interesting and fun, if you are heavily invested in the stock market, you have to recognize that you are taking on greater risk of loss than if at least some of your money is reallocated into more conservative assets such as bonds.

5. INVESTMENT FEES One often-overlooked aspect of investing is the fees you’re paying. If you’re paying a significant amount of money on investment maintenance and you aren’t getting returns to show for it, you might want to opt to put your money somewhere else. If you can dump some heavily-managed funds for less expensive electronic funds transers (ETFs), for instance, you will have more money available for those investments themselves.

6. BE SURE YOU’RE DOING IT The worst plan is no plan at all, and unfortunately there are far too many with just the “I’ll figure it out some day” mentality. Even if you currently have nothing saved for retirement, starting with what you can afford right now can make a big difference for your future nest egg, so don’t neglect it.

Audrey’s Boutique loves inspiring style By SARAH BAIN Marketing Correspondent

A

udrey’s Boutique isn’t what you expect it to be -- which is exactly why it’s such a perfect place to shop.

Tucked into a strip mall just a mile north of downtown Spokane on Division, Audrey’s sits next to Bridal Collection and Pounders Jewelry. It’s a boutique which specializes in personal service whether you want to get fitted for a new bra or get a memorable dress for a special event.

get in the way of the bride but will allow the mothers to shine in their own light. If you’re planning a cruise or some kind of island adventure, the boutique has you covered from resort wear to cruise wear. “This store is for women like myself,” Ferro continues. “Sixty is the new 40. We are still hip, but we don’t want to look like we went to the junior department. We want to look fresh.”

The shop’s dedicated staff and the way they make you feel at ease is the perfect way to make shopping for a special occasion hassle-free.

One of the important services Audrey’s likes to provide is post-mastectomy fittings. With specially certified and trained staff, they can help any woman who has had a mastectomy. These experts can help find just the right bra during a time that is often fraught with fear and low self-confidence.

The owner, Victoria Ferro, (pictured above) aka ‘The Bra Whisperer,’ will never let a woman leave the store feeling anything less than fantastic.

“We can start with women prior to surgery, and we go on the journey with them,” said Ferro. “By doing what we do, we help a woman feel complete.”

“We believe every person who walks in here is beautiful; they just don’t know how to package that beauty yet,” says Ferro. “You can come into the store, feel comfortable and know that we are going to help you look your best. None of us who work here are models. We all have lumps and bumps. We know how to fit you!”

As Spokane’s longest running, privately owned boutique for more than 40 years, Audrey’s is definitely worth a visit, especially if you haven’t had a bra fitting in years. While you are at it, consider looking around for a new outfit.

Audrey’s is a great place for the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom to find dresses that won’t

“The bras are what started the store, but I try to do the whole woman,” Ferro said. “We take the time the education women on what looks well and why.”

Project Joy

connects community “everything from piano players to puppeteers to barbershop quartets to tap-dancers” By TERRY BAIN Marketing Correspondent Something easy to forget is that just because we add a few years to our birthday portfolio, that doesn’t mean we lose the interests and talents that we had when we were younger. (Furthermore, some of us may find a talent or interest we didn’t know we even had until we suddenly realize we need to learn to play ukulele.) If you’re in this position, you may find yourself moving into a creative career, joining hobby groups, or looking for people with similar interests. Another way the talented members in our community may find connections with others is through organizations like Project Joy. Project Joy is an organization composed of entertainers 50 years of age or older who provide

entertainment for care centers, assisted living facilities, retirement complexes, civic and fraternal organizations, schools and other special events. All Project Joy performers are volunteers who want to share joy using their particular talent. Project Joy offerings include everything from piano players to puppeteers, barbershop quartets to tap-dancers. And they’re always looking for more volunteers. If you’re considering signing up but are worried about the time commitment, the bulk of the “gigs” are during daylight hours on weekdays because Project Joy recognizes the needs of volunteers. Furthermore, most performances last between 30-45 minutes. Partially funded by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department Project Joy gets supplemental support from facilities, grants, community development monies, and personal

donations. With over 40 different acts and 220 volunteers, Project Joy is a vibrant, active, creative outlet by and for seniors in the Spokane community. Anyone who’s already had their 50th birthday, who loves music, dance or dramatics and has the desire to share the wealth of their talents is encouraged to join in and help out. Contact the Project Joy office at (509) 535-0584 to discuss where you might be placed on the Project Joy team, or to schedule an audition. That’s also the number to call if you want to book Project Joy for an event. Donation amount for booked events is determined at the time of booking and depends on production costs and the type and size of the group. Many of the groups are listed on their website, with video samples of what they perform. Find more info at projectjoy.org

Pets for Good Health

By TERRY BAIN Marketing Correspondent

M

ost people who have owned a pet know that meaningful bonds are created between humans and their animal counterparts. But what is becoming increasingly apparent is that there are many more life-enhancing benefits to owning or spending time with an animal, a few of which are detailed below.

BODY CHEMISTRY Research suggests that the simple act of touching or petting a dog or cat can provide nearly immediate physical benefits. Just 15 minutes in to bonding with an animal can trigger positive chemical reactions in the brain. Our levels of fight-or-flight hormone, cortisol, is lowered, and the feel-good hormone, serotonin, is raised. As if we were predesigned to be compatible with pets, our heart

rate, blood pressure and stress levels almost immediately drop. This is probably why seniors with pets tend to have lower blood pressure than those without furry friends, which is an important component in reducing the risk of heart disease.

can be contagious, and can help seniors value what is “here and now” over what “has been” or “might be.” This keeps us from dwelling on or worrying about the impossible “what if.” For best results, find a pet that can quote Walt Whitman.

COMPANIONSHIP

GET UP AND GO

Loneliness can affect many seniors, and can lead to other health risks. It’s likely no surprise that the companionship of a pet can be an important factor in reducing the chance of loneliness and depression for seniors who find themselves spending a lot of time alone, especially in widowhood. It’s harder to feel lonely with an animal that clearly loves you pressed against your leg.

For the most part, pets can’t do a lot of things themselves, so daily scheduled pet routines can help improve mobility and independence for their human counterparts. Furthermore, some pets may be able to alert seniors with hearing loss when the doorbell rings or an alarm goes off. And a daily outdoor walk with a dog in tow is a simple, lowstress form of exercise that can also help with social interaction.

CARPE DIEM Animals don’t have much of a concept of the future or the past. Everything that happens is happening right now (and even sooner, if possible). This feeling

may find their symptoms reduced over time. And since anxiety exacerbates pain, reducing anxiety can help ease pain for seniors with chronic conditions such as arthritis. Studies have even begun to show that pet therapy may reduce the need for pain medication after surgery.

BONUS SECURITY You don’t have to have a pit bull or Doberman Pinscher to get a sense of protection by owning a pet. Thieves are simply less likely to enter or rob a house if there is likely to be a ruckus, and a dog barking at a strange noise at the door (even if the “bark” sounds more like a “yip”) will provide just that. Of course, owning a pet is not for everyone, but the health benefits of at least spending some time caring for or bonding with a companion animal are hard to ignore. Take some time to research what animal resources are available, and determine what size and speed of animal is best for your lifestyle. One resource for locating a pet that’s just right for seniors is the PAWS Seniors for Seniors program, which was developed to “help senior humans rediscover the joys of having a cat or dog in their lives.” The program places senior cats and dogs with senior citizens who are Washington state residents, typically for a low adoption rate. For more information about the Seniors for Seniors program, contact PAWS at http://paws. org.

VACATION ABROAD without kids

By SARAH BAIN Marketing Correspondent

REFRESHING

It was a spur-of-the-moment decision to y to London with my husband but without the children. A friend who is a travel writer clued me in on a great deal for a four-day trip across the pond last spring. As parents in our 50s with kids both leaving the nest and still sticking around for a few more years, we hadn’t done a great deal of international travel, and certainly we didn’t do much travel at all without the children. Most vacations over the last decade or two focused on trips to visit family out of state, relaxing weeks at the Oregon coast and a lovely over-the-border jaunt to Victoria B.C. But international travel always

took a back seat to soccer games, piano recitals and slumber parties. So it was a bit of a surprise for my husband when he opened up his Christmas present from me – airplane tickets, hotel reservations and travel plans to London. We packed up our weekend getaway bags (travel light!), made sure our teenage kids had a list of phone numbers and ew off to the U.K., leaving the just-about-to-y-the-nest kids to experience what it’s like to stay home alone, feed the animals and remember to take out the garbage on trash day.

appetites to do it again sooner rather than later. The museums, castles, gardens and British pubs are already calling us back. This year, I’m heading to Italy and Greece for eight days with our high school senior. Who knows what next year will bring, but I’m excited to scour the internet for great deals. That seems to be the way we are easing into our life as soon-to-be empty nesters looking toward retirement. The beneďŹ ts of traveling as a couple without kids? Turns out that it’s easier to hit the pubs and taverns, especially when you don’t have to worry about a curfew!

Was it short? Yes. Did it renew our intrigue and excitement over international travel? You bet. And the best part is we saw enough to whet our

ACTIVE LIVING

A

ctive living doesn’t have an age limit – it’s more of a state of mind.

No matter your age, it’s always important to keep yourself physically and mentally engaged. This can be everything from a short walk daily or doing some puzzles. Medical experts suggest about 20 minutes of exercise every day can help the body and the brain big time – it provides endorphins, which are pleasure chemicals. It also works our muscles and helps flexibility. As much as it’s tempting, especially on crummy days, to want to stay inside, give yourself a nice boost by stretching out and getting activity in. Active living also means eating better and cutting out unhealthy habits like smoking or alcohol. All of these can contribute to feeling better and having more time with family and friends. As we age, our metabolism naturally

slows and our appetite often isn’t as strong. Our sleep habits also change, even our balance. Though any age can hurt themselves falling, seniors are especially susceptible to more pain and a longer recovery time. So thinking in terms of staying active means everything from getting around your home safely to vacationing with family. Your community may have exercise and fitness programs designed especially for seniors. Or try sports like tennis, golf or bowling. Try a water aerobics class to be social and also relieve pain. Yoga and tai chi also could be appealing. No matter your age or current health, an active lifestyle helps you stay happy and healthy longer, with more vigor.

Get to know SNAP

By SARAH BAIN Marketing Correspondent

F

or more than 50 years, SNAP has been the Spokane region’s leading voice on poverty by educating and empowering low-income residents. With 30 programs to serve the region, SNAP’s mission is to “increase the human potential of our community by providing opportunities for people in need.”

ESSENTIAL HOME REPAIR SNAP provides services that allow low-income homeowners to repair and maintain their homes through access to loans for health and safety hazard concerns, installation of wheelchair ramps or modifications to their home for accessibility. Services include furnace and appliance repairs, plumbing and sewer repairs and hot water tank replacement.

ENERGY ASSISTANCE

From energy assistance and mortgage default counseling to money management education and a women’s business center, SNAP aims to help people live, learn and thrive by leading them to reach their full potential with help from SNAP’s social workers, housing assistants and business development specialists.

Some seniors have to choose between paying for groceries or paying to keep their lights on. SNAP energy assistance can help families with gas, electric, wood, propane, oil and other heat costs during the cold winter months. Avista Senior Program also provides assistance for non-heating energy expenses.

In 2018, SNAP served 45,124 people or approximately one in ten residents in Spokane County, with 10,153 of those clients 55 years and older. Additionally, SNAP was able to transition 351 people from homelessness into permanent housing.

BUSINESS SERVICES FOR WOMEN

Some of the programs that SNAP offers include:

At the East Central Community Center, the Women’s Business Center (WBC) is open five days a week, with evening and weekend consultations available by appointment. Services include business planning, technology classes for website, social media and brand development, and so much more. In addition to individual consulting and classes, they also offer networking opportunities.

ADVOCACY FOR LONG-TERM CARE RESIDENTS Many residents in long-term care facilities need an advocate to provide support and protection, which SNAP provides through the Residents’ Rights guaranteed under Federal and State law. In 2018, volunteers with the program made 1,504 visits to sites in five Eastern Washington counties. With so many services and programs available through the Inland Northwest, SNAP provides a vital role in the residents who need the most assistance. Information about volunteer opportunities or how you can receive help can be found on their website at www.snapwa.org.

A portion of every Active Living Expo ticket will be donated to SNAP.
