President of New Car Dealers Association bullish on 2012 On the eve of the 2012 Spokane New Car Dealers International Auto Show, Vic Pestrin is feeling bullish. Following three difficult years, the industry is primed for recovery, says the president of the Spokane New Car Dealers Association. As the economy emerges from recession and the employment picture brightens, buyers are returning to Vic Pestrin President, Spokane New Car showrooms, Dealers Association where they find General Manager and easier access Co-owner Hyundai Hallmark to credit and dealers why are eager to replenish their used-car inventories. “Dealers are paying top dollar for trade-ins,” says Pestrin. “Plus, interest rates are at historic lows and banks and credit unions are eager to loan. “Depending on the buyer’s credit score, we see rates as low as the mid-two-percent range,” says the co-owner and general manager at Hallmark Hyundai Isuzu Suzuki. Even the subprime market is showing signs of life, he says.
Would-be buyers are finding that having a job and a down payment can counter damage their credit may have suffered during the downturn. A renewed focus on leasing helps too: “Leasing is going to be a bigger and bigger share of the market,” Pestrin says. “Hyundai’s whole pitch is ‘ease, lease, lease.’ There are good subvented lease programs across the line, and I think that’s true of the whole industry.”
The 2012 Auto Show expands to include larger displays and more cars; buyers will find demand for their trade-ins and easier access to credit.
No better time to buy At the 2012 Auto Show, buyers can see all the new cars under a single roof. A new floor plan and expanded space makes room for larger displays and more cars. There, they’ll find the most exciting and advanced collection of cars ever, fuel-efficient vehicles that feature ever-increasing levels of technology and luxury. Manufacturers have learned that even small-car buyers want access to features and functions once reserved for larger cars. Advanced telematics and upscale interiors are finding their way into the humblest segments. “The Auto Show gives us a tremendous opportunity to meet the public and show them what we have to offer,” says Pestrin. “The show kicks off the buying season in Spokane. In July and August, we’ll still be seeing folks we met at the show; they’ll find what they want at the show and we’ll see them again when they’re ready to buy.”
Audi A6 smaller, lighter, roomier and better balanced The redesigned Audi A6 sports a large trapezoidal grille and angular headlights. Its dimensions have shrunk slightly, but interior space has grown. Weight is down as much as 165 pounds, while a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs promote improved weight distribution and handling. A simpler, more luxurious cabin design replaces last year’s cockpit-style interior; available features include a head-up display, adaptive suspension, automatic parallel parking, night vision with pedestrian detection, mobile Internet and full LED headlights. Based on the new A6, the A7 is a sleek fourdoor sedan that integrates a utilitarian hatchback. Both are powered by a 2.0-liter, 211-hp turbocharged four or a 310-hp supercharged V-6. An eight-speed automatic is standard. The aluminum-bodied, full-size A8 adds a new trim; the long-wheelbase A8 6.3L is powered by a 500-hp W-12.

2012 Toyota Camry turns the corner on handling
Without disturbing its legendary ride quality, suspension engineers enlivened the Camry’s handling characteristics
Despite last year’s calamitous weather, Toyota’s midsize Camry remains America’s best-selling car. For 2012, the Camry learns some new tricks, most noticeably a more aggressive look and handsomely redesigned cabin. On the inside, a pleasing mix of textures, trim and decorative stitching replaces last year’s hard plastics. Options include Entune, a suite of smartphone-enabled services. But the real revelation occurs with the Camry underway. Without disturbing its legendary ride quality, suspension engineers enlivened the Camry’s handling characteristics
With its sport-tuned suspension, paddle shifters and downshift rev-matching, the SE trim is particularly engaging. A 178-hp four powers base trims, while a 268-hp V-6 does duty among the upper trims. The four manages 35 mpg on the highway, the six 30 mpg. In March, the Prius Plug-In Hybrid becomes available in 15 launch states, including Washington.
Lincoln MKZ Hybrid brings new efficiency to entry-luxury segment New for 2012, the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid introduces hybrid efficiency to the entry-luxury segment. Its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric drive system (powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery pack) team up to generate 191 horsepower. Acceleration is brisk and fuel-efficiency impressive at 41 mpg city/36 mpg highway. Lincoln doesn’t charge a premium for the hybrid, while standard features include leather upholstery, heated and ventilated power front seats with memory, Sync multimedia integration and a nine-speaker stereo with a six-CD changer, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack. Foglights, heated side mirrors, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror complete the package.
Jeep Wrangler updated with 285-hp Pentastar V-6 Ever the off-road icon, the Jeep Wrangler finally gets a modern powerplant, Chrysler’s new, 285-hp Pentastar V-6. Mated with either a six-speed manual or new five-speed automatic, it’s quicker this year by a second from zero-60.

Subcompact Sonic is key to Chevy’s future
The Sonic’s cabin is utilitarian, comfortable and surprisingly roomy.
Other cars in Chevy’s stall get more attention, but the company will rebuild itself on the backs of cars like the all-new Sonic, a subcompact that’s available in sedan and hatchback body styles. Its utilitarian, comfortable and surprisingly roomy cabin accommodates four adults. Thoughtful design produces abundant cabin storage and a pair of four-cylinder power plants - one turbocharged - provide plenty of power
and up to 40 mpg on the highway. V-6 versions of 2012 Camaro get more power, while the SS coupe receives a retuned suspension. The updated interior includes a new instrument panel and steering wheel.
Sporty hybrid joins Infiniti M Series ranks
The new M Hybrid combines a 3.5-liter V-6 with an electric motor for a total of 360 hp. It’s very quick and surprisingly efficient.
In the crowded luxury-sport category, Infiniti’s M sedan distinguishes itself with powerful engines and a ride-and-handling package that rewards the aggressive driver. Now, a new hybrid comes online with blazing speed and a light touch at the gas pump. Under optimal conditions, the M Hybrid can be driven at speeds
of up to 62 mph on battery power alone. The EPA rates it 27 mpg city/32 highway/29 mpg combined - not half bad for a luxury sedan that sprints from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds, as quickly as its 460-hp M56 sib.

Cabin highlights include three-toned, heated and water-resistant seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. All Grand Vitara models except the Limited will feature a new tailgate that eliminates the spare tire and its carrier. A tire inflation kit will be included with all new Grand Vitaras that have no spare tire.

Buick Verano strong entry-luxury newcomer
Euro styling, a long standard-features list and a hushed and stylish cabin lead the way for Buick’s new and attractively priced Verano.
Based on price, features and style, Buick’s all-new compact Verano will make a big noise in the entry-luxury segment. Euro-styling and a hushed, stylish and roomy cabin make a strong first impression. Moreover, for just under $23,000, even the base Verano gets Buick’s Intellilink smart-phone connectivity, Bluetooth, a 7-inch display screen, keyless entry and dual-zone automatic climate control and a good deal more. Foglights are standard, as are 18-inch alloys.
Power is by a 180-hp 2.4-liter four mated to a six-speed automatic with manual shift-control. A new, more powerful GS trim joins the 2012 Regal lineup, along with a mild-hybrid eAssist variant. There’s a new touchscreen interface and the new IntellliLink smartphone system. eAssist also comes to the LaCrosse family this year.
Acura TL facelift trims controversial grill
At Acura, 2012 will be remembered as the model year that tamed the TL’s assertive snout.
Some people compared it to a cattle catcher, others to a bottle-cap opener. Whichever, TL sales have soared since the TL grill was trimmed. The facelift includes updated headlights and turn signals, new fog lights and a shorter front overhang.
The TL also gains a new Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission that boosts both performance and fuel economy. There also are improvements to the navigation system, active Bluetooth pairing, a more detailed Bluetooth audio display and improved sound insulation for a quieter cabin.
2013 model year comes early to Ford booth Three Ford superstars make their 2013 debuts early this year. The 2013 Escape will be based on a European compact crossover called the Kuga. Larger, stronger and more economical than the Escape it replaces, it also looks and handles better and and brings a long list of available features, such as “active assist” parking, torque vectoring and a liftgate that opens when the person holding the key fob gently kicks her foot under the center of the bumper, tripping a sensor. A turbocharged “Ecoboost” powerplant leads a chorus of thrifty four-cylinder engines. Ford goes all out for the 2013 Focus EV, offering dramatic new styling, a stiffer platform and a selection of powertrains that
will include three gas engines, a gas-electric hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. Instead of a six-cylinder option, Fusion will be available with a fuel-sipping 2.0-liter Ecoboost four-cylinder that makes 237 hp and a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system. The new Energi plug-in hybrid makes a combined 185 hp and returns an efficiency rating of 100 MPGe, besting the competition. Expect a big helping of cabin tech. The 2013 Mustang features powertrain upgrades and subtle cosmetic updates. Trick new “pony projection lamps” produce the Mustang logo on the ground when the doors are remotely unlocked. The highly anticipated 2013 Escape joins its 2013 sibs, Mustang GT and Focus EV, at the 2012 Auto Show.
Frugal new engine highlights full Impreza redesign
A sculpted look aligns the Impreza visually with its stablemates, while a new engine brings best-in-class fuel efficiency.
Subaru’s compact Impreza sedan and hatchback are completely made over, with a sculpted look that aligns them with other recently redesigned Subies. Cabin design and materials quality take a huge leap forward, and soft-touch surfaces replace last year’s hard plastics. Key to the make-over is a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder flat-four engine that makes 148 hp and 145 lb.-ft. of torque. Two transmissions are available: a five-speed manual that pairs up with Subaru’s “symmetrical” AWD sys-
tem that splits torque evenly between the front and rear ends. An optional continuously variable transmission defaults with more power to the front wheels, sending power rearward when necessary. Power is down, but Subaru claims best-in-class mileage, with EPA-estimated fuel economy with the manual at 25 mpg city/34 mpg highway (33 for the hatchback) and 28 mpg combined. The CVT bumps those numbers to 27/36/30. The WRX and STI performance editions carry over from last year.

Honda CR-V and Civic in focus for 2012
The made-over 2012 CR-V gets new styling, an updated interior and upgrades to both power and fuel-efficiency.
The Honda CR-V, the original compact crossover, gets a bumper-to-bumper makeover. There’s new sheet metal and an updated interior and, though the powertrain is carried over, the oh-12 is both more powerful and more efficient. The new CR-V loses an inch in height and length, but legroom is the same and cargo room grows incrementally. Other key updates include a quieter cabin, a smoother ride and a longer standard-features list, including Bluetooth and a rearview camera. The compact Civic is fully redesigned, as well, though the updates are subtle.
Exterior styling is freshened and the cabin is substantially roomier. Stability control is now standard throughout the lineup and a new HF variant earns highway efficiency ratings of 41 mpg. Power and efficiency are up for the Civic Hybrid too. The Insight hybrid receives a mild facelift and more comfortable rear seating. Cabin updates include upgraded materials, a revised instrument panel, a new center stack and enhanced navigation. Aerodynamic and powertrain tweaks boost efficiency by 1 mpg city/2 mpg highway and 2 mpg combined.
GMC shines spotlight on cabin tech The 2012 Terrain compact crossover gets GM’s new Bluetooth system, Intellilink. Intellilink allows drivers to use voice commands to control their smartphones, which are synced with the car audio system via a new touchscreen interface. Now, such Internet services as Pandora and Stitcher can be streamed into the cabin.

All-new GS 350 finds Lexus playing the Germans’ sporty game
The GS 350‘s surprisingly assertive styling is your first clue that something new is up at Lexus.
Lexus dips its toes - no, make that plunges headlong - into the luxury-sport market with a heavily made-over GS 350. Available in rear- or all-wheel-drive, the midsize sedan proves Lexus can in fact play the German’s game. Its all-new sheet metal surprises with its frank assertiveness and its 3.5-liter V-6 makes convincing power. Its cabin, rich with leather, aluminum and wood trim, is Lexusplush, but with the addition of firm and deeply bolstered seats designed to hold occupants in place. With its revised suspension geometry, stiffened body structure
and cat-quick responses, the GS 350 is capable of putting those seats to the test. An F Sport package ups the ante with more aggressive settings all around. Wider by two inches, the GS 350 cabin is roomier, an affect abetted by laborious spacesaving techniques, and trunk space grows by 25 percent. The CT 200h hybrid adds an audible warning system to give pedestrians a heads-up when it’s in the ‘hood and an F Sport package with sport-tuned suspension.
Dodge Grand Caravan adds new budget-oriented American Value Package Last year, a serious round of updates brought the Grand Caravan improved engine performance and better fuel economy, driving dynamics and cabin quality. This year, an American Value Package debuts with a starting price of just $20,995. Standard gear includes the 283-hp Pentastar V-6 , a sixspeed automatic transmission, air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, seven airbags, second-row Super Stow ‘n Go seating and storage system, third-row Stow ’n Go, power windows, locks and mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control and more. Priced at just $20,995, the 2012 American Value Package hangs its hat on a surprisingly complete list of standard features.
Mazda3 with Skyactiv joins 40 mpg club Mazda didn’t exactly reinvent internal combustion technology when designing the new “Skyactiv” powertrain, but they gave it a good once-over. Skyactiv is a new powertrain philosophy in which every element of both engine and transmission is evaluated for inefficiencies. Resolving them, one by one, produces a 2.0-liter engine that makes a healthy 155 hp and rates 40 mpg on the highway. Best, the Mazda3 Skyactiv retains Mazda’s fun-to-drive character. Last year’s 148-hp 2.0-liter and 167-hp 2.5-liter carry over, as does the crazy-fun 263-hp MazdaSpeed 3.

Mitsubishi unveils electric i-MiEV hatchback For 2012, Mitsubishi unveils the i-MiEV, its long-awaited pure electric hatchback. The little four-passenger hatch is available in two well-equipped trim levels and standard equipment includes full-power accessories, filtered air-conditioning and a heated driver’s seat. Mitsu claims an 85-mile range and an 85-mph top speed. Charging times vary: 22 hours from flat to fully charged using a 120-volt household outlet and six hours with the optional $700 Quick Charge dock. Slightly smaller - and lighter - than Nissan’s Leaf, the i-MiEV sports trend-setting looks and a comfy cabin. Base price is $29K-and-change, less the $7,500 federal tax credit. Alongside a mixed bag of across-the-board upgrades, Mitsubishi’s midsize Lancer sports sedan adds a budgetpriced all-wheel-drive trim. Designed for cold-weather states, the $20,195 SE includes heated front seats and side mirrors; 16-inch alloys; dark silver instrument-panel trim; black-with-beige-trim fabrics; and a chrome lower grille. Power is by a 168-hp 2.4-liter four that’s paired with a continuously variable transmission and earns EPA ratings of 22 mpg city/29 mpg highway.
The well-equipped, four-passenger i-MiEV boasts an 85-mile range and optional Quick Charge dock.
Small engines make big news at BMW
A 315-horsepower, turbocharged six replaces last year’s base V-8 in the gorgeous 6 Series Coupe. With the new engine, the 6 is both quicker and more fuel-efficient.
Turbocharging is emerging as a preferred method for marrying power and efficiency. At BMW, three key models get the treatment. The 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 that powers the all-new 640i makes 315 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque and earns EPA ratings of 21 city/31 highway. All numbers improve on last year’s V-8. Riding on a lightweight new chassis, the 2012 6 Series is wider, lower and a little shorter this year, and its cabin has morphed into a sumptuous cocoon entirely befitting the coupe’s $74K cost of
entry. More power - 400 hp/450 lb.-ft - is on tap in the twin-turbo, eight-cylinder 650i. The midsize 528i jettisons its base six for a more efficient and stronger turbocharged four that makes 240 hp. Look for EPA ratings of 22 city/32 highway. The Z4 roadster makes the same swap and gets EPA numbers of 22/34 as a result. With a big torque advantage over last year’s six, the Z4 sDrive28i loses not a step.
Nissan’s Versa sedan redesigned inside and out
The little entry-level four-door gets a new engine, new sheet metal and a frugal new engine.
Nissan updates the entry-level Versa sedan this year with fresh looks, a big jump in cabin space and improved fuel efficiency. The sedan gets a trimmer, toned-down look. Its new 109-hp, 1.6-liter engine is EPA rated at 30 mpg city/38 mpg highway and 33 mpg combined when paired with a continuously variable transmission and 27/36/30 with the standard five-speed stick. The base S trim is sparsely equipped but every Versa enjoys better-thanexpected rear-seat comfort. The hatchback carries over from last year, with mod-
est standard-equipment updates. For 2012, Nissan’s Leaf EV adds standard features such as heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, heated exterior mirrors and a battery heater. Maxima adds a Limited Edition package that incorporates features from the SV Sport and gets modest updates to the grille and and taillights along with updated interior trim.
Restyled Rio impresses with looks, features and price With the 2012 Rio, Kia asserts itself in the entry-level subcompact category. In the footsteps of their recently released siblings, the Rio sedan and hatchback are boldly styled and aggressively priced. A new direct-injection four-cylinder engine makes 138 hp and, at 30 mpg city/40 mpg highway, earns top-of-the-class efficiency ratings. The new Rio is larger and roomier and upscale options stretch the definition of entry-level. There are new engines for the 2012 Soul - a 138-hp, 1.6-liter four and an up-level, 164-hp, 2.0liter four - as well as a general freshening inside and out. A six-speed manual transmission, with hill-holder, is standard and a six-speed automatic optional. Fuel efficiency is up over last year on both engines. Plenty of cosmetic and functional upgrades, as well, both inside and out, including improved cabin materials and a telescoping steering wheel. There’s a new base engine for the Sorento crossover’s lower trims, a 2.4-liter direct-injected four rated at 175 hp and 169 pound-feet of torque. Kia’s streak of stye hits continues with the 2012 Rio, Kia’s redesigned entry-level sedan and hatchback.

2012 Porsche 911 Coupe debuts at show
Factory designated as the 991, the new coupe is longer, wider, lighter and more powerful than before.
A new 911 is always big news and this year we have one. Factory designated as the 991, the new coupe is longer, wider, lighter and more powerful. Hailed as the most civilized 911 yet, it’s also the best-performing iteration of the legendary sportster. Base power is by a 3.4-liter boxer six that makes 350 hp and 287 poundfeet of torque. A 3.8-liter engine that makes 400 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque powers the Carrera S. Exterior updates include larger headlights, more pronounced wheel arches and slimmer LED taillights. Inside, a new center console stretches to the dash and moves the shift lever closer to the steering wheel. Of course, there are more 911 variants than places where they can legally be driven; suffice it to say that only the Carrera and Carrera S trims are new. Other variants will
carry on until new models are phased in. The mid-engine Cayman adds a high-performance R variant, as well as a Cayman S Black Edition. The monochromatic, limited-run (500 units) Black edition packages a host of options in a single value-priced package. Cayman R undergoes a weight-loss program that renders it faster and more responsive, though somewhat less comfortable. Porsche’s Panamera super-sedan gets two new models; a 500-hp top-of-theline Turbo S and a 380-hp hybrid that sprints from zero to 60 in 5.8 seconds and earns EPA numbers of 22 city/30 highway/25 combined.
Three all-new models make for big year at Benz
The 2012 M Class five-passenger crossover has a cleaner look this year and gets stronger and more efficient engines.
Busy times at Mercedes-Benz, as the company intros three all-new models. Beginning with the volume leader: The 2012 M-Class five-passenger crossover has a cleaner look this year, with a grille that takes on overtones of classic M-B design and rear-end tweaks borrowed from the E-Class. Cabin updates include improved switchgear operation, simplified controls and a greater sense of refinement, thanks to S-Class design cues and more. There isn’t a hybrid this year, but both the base V-6 and the BlueTec turbodiesel produce more power with greater efficiency. Both are deeply equipped out of the box, while generous options packages add as much sport and/or luxury as buyers desire. Inside and out, the two-seat SLK hardtop convertible takes its game to a higher level. There’s a new, turbocharged four-cylinder base engine that’s nearly as strong and substantially more economical than the six it replaces; updated exterior styling; and a more luxurious cabin with a longer list of standard features. On the outside, the SLK gets a bit of the aggressiveness of the SLS AMG, particularly up front where a large grille dominates. A new platform is tuned for comfort but a revised suspension produces a sportier, better-handling ride. Build and materials quality is improve and controls simplified.
Mercedes’ CLS-Class was the first of the stylish “four-door coupes” and this year dramatic new styling extends its desirability. As with its aforementioned siblings, cabin quality is up substantially; unlike them. its price has dropped substantially. A pair of turbocharged V-8s make anywhere from 410-550 hp. A more rigid chassis and suspension refinements yield better ride and handling, while a new, variable-ratio electric-assist steering system communicates effectively with the driver. There’s no shortage of comfort or convenience in CLS Land. For the first time in M-B history, a C-Class Coupe is offered in the same configurations as its sedan variant. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine debuts in the new C250, while the V-6 found in the C350 gets a big power boost, from 268 hp to 302 hp. The engine in the C300 is unchanged, but is now available with allwheel drive only. Other changes include a freshened standard-equipment list, new front-end styling and an updated interior. Finally, the E-Class receives new, more powerful and more efficient engines across the line, and a wagon rejoins the family, raising E-Class body styles to four (sedan, coupe, convertible, wagon). Only the E350 BlueTec turbodiesel carries over; otherwise, power ranges from the gas-powered E350’s 302 hp, to the E550’s 402 hp and the E63 AMG’s 518 hp - all representing significant increases.
Beetle is larger, better equipped and more comfortable When it resurrected the Beetle in 1997, VW created a new legacy for the old icon. Now, the Beetle persists, with an all-new 2012 edition. Longer, wider and lower, the oh-12 is roomier and accommodates more cargo. The upright dash sustains VW tradition, though, right down to the optional drop-down glovebox. Standard gear includes full power accessories, air-conditioning, cruise control, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, heated mirrors, cloth upholstery, trip computer and an eight-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. The base engine is a 2.5-liter five that produces 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The smart pick is the optional 200-hp turbocharged four, which brings with it more power, better fuel efficiency and an upgraded suspension. The performance-oriented GLI The legacy of the original Beetle lives on in the longer, lower and wider 2012 edition.
returns following a two-year hiatus. Based on the Jetta, the GLI sports an up-level interior and a multilink rear suspension, which it borrows from the GTI. VW’s 200-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder is here and buyers choose between a six-speed manual gearbox and VW’s DSG dual-clutch automated manual. Replacing the V-6-powered R32, the new Golf R gets a 266-hp turbocharged four. Quicker, more responsive and more efficient than the R32, the Golf can be had with a six-speed manual transmission or VW’s DSG dual-clutch automated manual. The R’s standard all-wheel-drive system is more responsive than its predecessor and is able to send all power to the rear wheels. The 2012 Tiguan receives exterior styling updates and transmission tweaks that bump highway fuel economy two mpg, to 26.
