shots. “Playable, that’s the main thing we jimm@spokesman.com, (208) 765-7131 hear from people,” Ranch Rhodes pro Shane Sanchez said. “Everybody loves This well-manicured, Ted Robinson-designed 18-hole layout has the design, it’s consistently in good shape and you’re going to see some a little bit of everything. Located perhaps 10-15 minutes from pretty holes, but it’s not going to beat the Las Vegas Strip, Rhodes Ranch has you up.” Winding through an 1,800-home a resort feel with generous fairways bordered by side hills that often steer development, Rhodes Ranch easily could have fallen into a cookie-cutter wayward tee shots back toward the design with each hole looking like the short grass. Undulating greens and last. That didn’t happen, however, as well-positioned bunkers, the course offers a mixture of characteristics of a Robinson design, risk-reward holes, from drivable and water that comes into play on par-4s (No. 11) to reachable-in-two seven holes require thoughtful par-5s that punish faulty shots. placement of drives and approach

The par-3s leave a lasting impression, particularly No. 3, which can be played from 107 to 227 yards to a diagonally-shaped green guarded by a pond and a cleverly placed bunker on the right edge. There’s a small bail-out area left of the green. Measuring 167 yards from the white tees, finding the putting surface is a relief and making par is a chore. We had a couple 3s in our group and we practically jogged to the next hole. It’s an intimidating view from the tips with the first challenge clearing the hazard and the next trying to hold the ball on the putting surface after hitting a low iron or hybrid.

No. 7 can stretch to 202 yards. The greens on the back-nine par-3s are framed by water and both are in the neighborhood of 200 yards from the back tees. “We definitely have the best set of par-3s in town,” Sanchez said. “No. 3 is 234 from the tips to the center. It’s not easy.” The front-side greens had a About the only change since Rhodes Ranch opened 15 years bout with disease last summer, ago is turf reduction. The course, but they’ve rebounded nicely.

which entertains about 65,000 rounds per year, was originally wall-to-wall grass but now has large cutouts that not only save on the water bill but in many cases add to the test of a particular hole. “It’s in pretty amazing condition when you think about the number of rounds, carts and divots,” Sanchez said. The pro offered a few closing tips. “We ask that people make sure to play the appropriate tees so they enjoy it because it can beat you up from the back tees,” he said. “On the greens, things have a tendency to break to the city. You’re kind of in a bowl in Las Vegas so the subtle breaks have a tendency to break toward The Strip.”

he views at Sunrise Vista are simply unmatched. Belt a drive here and you just might forget to watch the flight of the ball if your eye catches the Thunderbirds in formation in the distance, an A-10 roaring down a nearby runway or an F-16 banking against a cloudless sky.

CHRISTOPHER ANDERSON chrisa@spokesman.com

“I find myself watching them all the time,” says golf pro Steve Griffiths of the F16s.

“You can pretty much see almost all of the aircraft the Air Force has,” said Steve Griffith, director of golf at the 27-hole military course at Nellis Air Force Base. “They hold different exercises throughout

the year. There’s always planes taking off and landing almost every day.” It’s a visual treat that caused photographer/plane buff Christopher Anderson and I to stop, listen and marvel as roughly 75 aircraft took flight during our round from runways perhaps 1,500 yards away. “We hear nothing but good things from people who play here,” Griffith said. “They love the planes and they love the atmosphere because you get pretty close. And they enjoy the course layout. There’s

some good par-4s, par-3s. We have some good holes that are really challenging.” The course is “semi-open” to the public, Griffith said, “but it’s not a place where you can drive up and have public access.” Griffith suggests contacting the pro shop and putting your name on a list. The process of becoming an authorized guest generally takes about a week. Green fees are more than reasonable at $28; $40 with an electric cart. Sunrise Vista sees about 38,000 rounds a year. Raptor. Eagle and Falcon are traditional layouts – relatively flat, several dog-legs, plentiful trees and a couple of water features. Raptor is more links style with fewer trees and more mounding to shape the fairways and greens. “It changes things up a little bit for those who play here,” Griffith said. At 3,588 yards from the blues, Falcon is the longest of the three nines. From the tips the shortest par-3 is 202 yards, the shortest par-4 is 404 and the shortest par-5 is 540. There are a number of memorable holes.

Eagle No. 8 is only 135 yards from the back tees but obstacles include a rock wall and front and back bunkers that consume shots of inexact yardage. Falcon No. 3 is another scenic par-3, measuring 152 yards from the gold to 202 from the blue. A sizable water hazard awaits shots that go left and those on line require distance control to negotiate a severely sloping green. The par-5 7th at Raptor has a little of everything. All three courses, located about 25 minutes northwest of It can be the big, bad Wolf, if you so the Las Vegas Strip, come with scenic choose. There isn’t a longer course in Nevada 360-degree views of the natural, rolling than Wolf, which measures a whopping landscape against a mountain-range 7,604 yards from the tips. Wolf is one of backdrop. “Sun Mountain is considered the three Pete Dye-designed courses on the property owned by the Las Vegas Paiute most picturesque. It’s a kinder, gentler

Dye,” said Christie Shaw, director of marketing. “Snow Mountain has seven water features and we think 16, 17 and 18 are some of the best finishing holes in Las Vegas. All three courses have really different designs.” Wolf, which opened in 2001, is considered the signature course with its endless bunkers (I stopped counting at 15 traps on the par-5 third), elevation

changes and sheer length. “That (7,604 yards) is why a lot of folks want to try it,” Shaw said. We played Wolf on a breezy, sunny afternoon from the yellow tees and it had ample distance at 6,483 yards, including four par-4s 410 yards or longer. Three of those long par-4s create See WOLF, K11

Continued from K10 great closing stretches to both nines. On the front, it begins with the par-5 sixth that has a bunker running 450 yards along the left side before slicing across the front of a shallow, slightly elevated green. No. 7 is 410 yards, but plays much longer because it’s uphill. Drives to the right will likely find one of five bunkers. Keep it in play off the tee and the next shot is equally challenging: typically a middle iron to an elevated green. No. 8 is an interesting 170 yards (206 from the back tees). Miss right and you won’t see your playing partners for a while. Your ball will settle in a waste bunker some 40

feet below the green. Good luck getting that up-and-down. The diagonally shaped green can send shots that are slightly right and slightly short to a sandy resting spot. Put a 3 on the scorecard at No. 8 and your reward is … the uphill, dogleg-right 431-yard 9th. For once, there are no bunkers to worry about on your tee shot – just a grass bunker along the right side. Bunkers protect a two-tiered green. The back nine is equally challenging. The first water feature shows up at No. 12, framing the par-3's right side. The par-4 14th dog-legs hard right and your first decision is determining how much distance you want to try to shave off by challenging a waste area

along the right side. No. 15, a 138-yard par-3 with an island green, is often the most memorable for first-timers, Shaw said. “If somebody makes a hole-in-one we hear about it for days.” No. 18 is a classic, 428-yard finishing hole. Water hugs the right side before giving way to a green guarded by several bunkers. Asked what visitors tell her after they’ve played Wolf, Shaw said, “With a smile, ‘That was hard.’ ” Asked her approach when she plays Wolf, Shaw responded, “If I’m feeling competitive I’ll push it, but I like the fact that because of the tee-box options I can decide what I’m up for. I don’t try to beat the course; I try to play with it.”
