RANBROOK, British Columbia – I collect ideas for our annual Golf Guide as often as I three-putt greens. Don’t mention it to the boss but I have one, headlineready, in subconscious storage: “Bucket List Golf.” Yes, it’s Pebble Beach and a couple others on the Monterey Peninsula. Yes, I’ll need every bit of luck/ingenuity to pull it off. My decision usually comes down to what many are looking for when they phone a buddy or three to plan a quick golf getaway: A reasonably short drive to sample interesting, challenging courses that perhaps they haven’t played before or heard about from a friend.

That’s what prompted me to type “Cranbrook golf into the search engine on my computer. A little over 3 hours drive from my doorstep, maybe another 25 minutes from downtown Spokane? Doable. Scenic? Try gorgeous. Affordable? Check,
that Wildstone and Shadow Mountain are only 5-6 years old and St. Eugene opened in 2000. With invaluable help from kootenayrockies.com and the three courses, I invited brother Jack along for a three-round, two-night stay and he showed his appreciation by beating me in every round. I vaguely remember seeing a sign for St. Eugene golf/resort/casino a decade ago when I visited Canada for a few days of golf and relaxation in nearby Kimberley. I did some research and discovered

We’re attracting more and more people, never as many as we’d like but now that the exchange rate is certainly strongly in your favor it only makes sense we’ll see more people from the Spokane area.” The courses are in terrific condition thanks to nice spring weather. “We probably could have opened in early April but we just wanted to make sure the course was in really good shape,” said John Swanson, Shadow Mountain
general manager and director of golf. “The other day I said to our superintendent the 17th and 18th fairways look like they’re in July condition.” Beyond sharing similar geography and dazzling views of the Rocky Mountains, each course is unique, a drawing card in a competitive region featuring seven courses within a 20-minute drive and 17 within an hour. “The three courses are 10 minutes apart or less, which makes it a phenomenal destination,” Wildstone general manager Chris Andrews said. “They are all different courses, different types of grasses, three totally different architects that build in different ways, using all the elements differently. You kind of walk away going, ‘Wow, this isn’t cookie cutter golf.’ ” No, it’s Cranbrook golf, and it’s worth the drive.

CRANBROOK, British Columbia – St. Eugene meets all the requirements of a destination golf course. And then some. The course is challenging but playable as the layout weaves through stunning surroundings. St. Eugene blends links-style holes, others in between towering pines, a few alongside the St. Mary River and several with distinct elevation changes.
It has neat accents. Eye-catching benches and signs are crafted from reclaimed, pine-beetle-damaged wood from the site. Selected sand traps are decorated with plants or driftwood. A snack shack is conveniently located near the 3rd, 10th and 15th greens. And something else that made for an enjoyable sunny afternoon in late April: tranquility. It has

It’s private land around us, farms; we’re on a reserve.” My brother Jack and I headquartered at St. Eugene’s 100-room lodge. Judging by the number of people sitting in the lobby next to their golf bags each morning, the lodge seemed to be a popular choice for those playing St. Eugene and other courses in the region. St. Eugene was designed by Les Furber, who has constructed more than 60 courses in Canada. It opened in May 2000 and was selected the third-best new Canadian course. “Playability comes to mind,” Sherwood said of Furber’s design traits that can be found at St. Eugene. “There are no blind shots. From all you are going. “He’s also trying to challenge people. our tee boxes you can see the landing Some of the par 4s that are a little area, and it’s fairly self-evident where

your drive. There’s risk-reward opportunity, and those who want to cut off more can, but they need to be pretty accurate.” St. Eugene welcomes visitors with new golf carts, a complimentary bottle of water and the first few holes don’t demand pinpoint accuracy off the tee. Two solid shots can lead to an early two-putt birdie opportunity on the 499-yard par-5 second. The fifth, at 405 yards from the blues, is one of the longer par 4s and multiple bunkers gobble up errant second shots. No. 8, also at 405 yards, is the toughest par 4 on the property. As we putted out – by far the best birdie I’ve made this season – two deer strolled across the fairway. “That’s a bear of a hole,” Sherwood said. “You really need to manage your tee ball and have the correct strategy on the second.” The ninth is right out of a postcard, a 524-yard par 5 framed on the left by the river, which forces drivers to decide if they can carry the water for a shorter second or play it safe to the right. There are bunkers left and a pond right of a long, thinner green. No. 10 is another par 5, a double dogleg stretching 538-yards with sand traps galore. Bridge between form and function Wildstone offers marvelous scenery and course layout By Jim Meehan jimm@spokesman.com, (208) 659-3791
CRANBROOK, British Columbia – Wildstone was on my good side before I took my first swing. We drove past seven deer meandering through the trees adjacent to the entrance road. We checked in and discovered one of the most picturesque and practical driving ranges I’ve ever seen. Breaks between swings are spent gazing at the Rocky Mountains. Wildstone has the distinction of being the first and only Black Knight Golf Course by Gary Player Design in Canada. When it opened in 2011, Golf Digest senior architecture editor Ron Whitten, after touring every new course in North America that year, wrote: “Wildstone was my favorite round of the year.” The layout backs up Whitten’s assessment. Everything seems to fit together thoughtfully and seamlessly. Bunkers are well-located. Fairways are generous. Massive, undulating green complexes provide assorted options for pin locations.

The third, a 423-yard par 4, is the No. 1 handicap hole for good reason. It’s uphill, bunkers guard the left side of the landing area and a small trap is centered in front of a wide, but narrow green. The challenge of No. 3 gives way
to the temptation of the reachable 283-yard par-4 fourth, which can dish out birdies or bogeys. A ridge divides the green into a lower left shelf and a higher right section. Then it’s off to the fifth, a sharply downhill 360-yard par 4. A well-placed low iron or hybrid sets up a wedge approach to a large green protected on the left by sand and a pond. Again, options, variety and striking views. The par-5 ninth is only 477 yards but a grove of trees rest in the prime landing area. Play to the left and the second shot is shorter but you might have to carry trees and hold your shot on an angled green. Play to the right and the second shot is longer but
the green becomes more receptive. The back side begins with another par 5. It’s just 480 yards but the fairway is tree-lined and cleverly located bunkers await off-target first, second and third shots. The par-4 11th is no bargain at 408 yards and gently uphill. Water frames three-fourths of the 12th green, a 152-yard par 3. The par-5 13th presents a birdie opportunity but only if your drive avoids the bunkers off the right edge of the fairway and you follow with a precise second shot. Other than that, nothing to see here! “I love to play golf but I don’t play a ton,” general manager John Swanson said. “Every time I come to those holes, I never get tired of it. It’s just a wow factor.” That feeling isn’t reserved for just the 15th and 17th. Carts are mandatory, mainly because of the distance from the greens to the next tee box. The holes sprawl across rolling terrain on both sides of Highway 95, many accented by elevation changes whether it’s the dramatic 40-yard drops on Nos. 15 and 17 or the 153-yard par-3 16th, which is called “Plateau” because the tee box and green are at the same level but there’s a ravine in between. (By the way, No. 15 is called “The Drive” and No. 17 is the “The Monster.”) “It’s challenging off the tee, lots of bunkering (close to 200 traps) and what I love about it is the uniqueness,” said Swanson, noting the course has bentgrass tees, fairways and greens. “No two holes are the same. They’re independent of each other and you’re not worried about hitting into other people. Obviously, the sight lines are spectacular on and off the course.” Architect Wayne Carleton designed Shadow Mountain, which had a soft opening in July 2009. The first full season was 2010 and Shadow Mountain was promptly rated the second-best new course in Canada. The original plan was for the course to be on one side of Highway 95. That was adjusted because the

clubhouse – formerly a residence of the previous owner’s brother – was located on the opposite side. The end result was nine holes on each side of the highway, but car noise isn’t an issue because of the abundant pines and spacious layout. “That’s when Wayne noticed the elevation changes (on 15 and 17), when half the course came to this side of the highway,” Swanson said. “He said, ‘You just can’t manufacture these things.’ So he was excited to work with it.” The front nine begins and ends with par 5s that require an accurate drive – a recurring theme throughout because errant tee shots typically find natural sand traps, trees or thick underbrush. “We’ve worked to clean up some of the undergrowth,” Swanson said.
