Gazing & Grazing Take a stroll through Coeur d’Alene the first weekend in August for art, culture and community The most important lesson learned at the first Art on the Green in 1969 was what not to do. Organizers discovered that holding a community art festival on outdoor tennis courts in early August wasn’t the wisest idea, as evidenced by excessively sweaty patrons and paintings that were actually melting in the heat. So the event relocated to a shady park behind North Idaho College, where it has remained for nearly 50 years. Along the way, the vanilla name of “Coeur d’Alene Arts and Crafts Outdoor Festival” was dropped, and today the catchier “Art on the Green” has become a staple of North Idaho’s summer cultural scene. This year, the Citizens’ Council for the Arts-sponsored event celebrates its 48th year Aug. 5-7, with nearly 200 artists’ booths, plus entertainment and food all weekend long. Art on the Green, where you’ll find works of art and crafted items in all mediums ranging in price from a few bucks to thousands of dollars, brings more than 50,000 visitors of all ages to downtown Coeur d’Alene.

Living the HIGH life

Grown-up tree houses provide a fun, hands-on adventure and investment Tree houses are cool, especially if you never had one as a kid. The perfect refuge for a young person, tree houses provide shelter during rainstorms, a gathering place away from parents or tattletale siblings and a hideaway for secret treasures. But tree houses aren’t just “kid stuff” anymore. Want a unique creative area for your art or your writing? A rustic game room? Your personal cigar lounge? All you really need is lumber, basic building supplies and a sturdy tree. National building supply stores sell tree house or playground kits with step-by-step instructions and ready-for-assembly supplies. In many cases, the lumber is already precut, sanded and stained, which can save amateur DIYers plenty of time and splinters, and keep the quality consistent. These structures range in price based on size, accessories and complexity. The Home Depot’s “Little Squirt,” a simple 6-foot by 6-foot playhouse, costs around $2,200. More intricate and expensive sets include slides, ladders, swings

and a central play area. Though these are generally intended to be used on the ground – and thereby appeal to homeowners lacking suitable trees – they can be adapted to arboreal use. If you’re looking for a unique and more personalized space, you can hire specialty builders who do nothing but create tree houses. Nelson Treehouse, based in the Seattle area, is one such builder that creates custom luxury tree houses around the country. Featured on Animal Planet’s “Treehouse Masters,” its impressive structures, which start at $150,000 for a 200-square foot house, include everything that your childhood tree house lacked: paneling, running water, electricity, fancy furniture, even compostable toilets – stuff your 12-year-old self couldn’t even fathom, but that your current (and future) self can’t live without. - Joe Butler

Hot Tubs Eternal For thousands of years, humanity has turned to heated water — whether natural hot springs or artiďŹ cially heated with warmed stones — for relief. And there’s no denying that you’ll feel more relaxed, physically and mentally, after a good, long soak in a hot tub. If you’re worried that an outdoor tub may look gaudy in your garden, consider a few decorative features to design a true oasis in your own backyard.

If You Build It‌ Rather than a free-standing solo tub, consider building a spa into a deck with convenient access for you and your guests. No traipsing through the grass in the dark for a late-night soak, no tracking dirt back inside.

Wood You? Lounging in a wood hot tub will overwhelm your senses — in a good way — as the aromatics of water-soaked cedar can alleviate stress and anxiety. The unique barrel-shape and old-school simplicity have a natural look that ďŹ ts in with many backyard aesthetics.

Gimme Shelter Placing your hot tub under an awning or gazebo provides some extra protection from the elements. When the inevitable Spokane winter arrives, the last thing you want to do when you’re ready for a dip is shovel snow off the cover. Plus, a pergola can be adorned with greenery during the summer to fully integrate the space with your garden. - Theresa Tanner

A Different Kind of Cruise

ruising in the company of thousands — everyone trying to have the same individual experience while sharing space on a mega ship — isn’t for everyone. You can always find a quiet corner somewhere and unique encounters, but traveling in such numbers comes with limitations.

C

That’s what makes companies like Un-Cruise Adventures in Seattle stand out. I’ve cruised on their small ships three times now, and every one is a top-of-the-list adventure.

Wild Alaska Unlike larger ships that cruise to Alaska on a tightly regulated schedule, Un-Cruise Adventures offers a leisurely pace and incredible opportunities to get close to glaciers, woodlands and Alaskan wildlife.

The small-ship experience offers benefits like dropping anchor at Glacier Bay and kayaking among the icebergs and glaciers, plus skiff tours and woodland hiking. When the captain received word that whales were nearby, that’s where the ship went, giving the (no more than 88) passengers on deck time to admire the magnificent animals, listening as they breathed at the surface. On the first full day of our cruise, we took a short hike and ran right into a pair of young grizzly siblings wrestling in the middle of a stream. The next day, we pulled into a cove and watched a wolf pack share a piece of ground with a grizzly mother and cubs — a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Mighty Columbia From the moment we boarded the replica coastal cruiser, S. S. Legacy, in Portland for our round-trip Columbia and Snake Rivers cruise, we were steeped in history with our costumed guides. As we moved upriver, historic interpreters and tour leaders continued to bring the stories and culture of the region to life. As we passed through The Dalles, the end of the Oregon Trail, we watched the terrain change, viewing the same high desert landscape Lewis and Clark saw on their Voyage of Discovery. We rode jet boats up the Snake River, deep in the gorge that still bears the geological evidence of its turbulent creation, and spent a pleasant day in Walla Walla, once considered the “Paris of the West,” tasting some of the area’s outstanding wines.

Walking Through Istanbul

A humpback whale dives off the coast of Maui during the spring mating season, photo by Cheryl-Anne Millsap.

Throughout the trip, we ate gourmet meals and enjoyed cocktails with other passengers. We made friends and shared stories with our traveling companions, many of whom have led fascinating lives. Before our cruise, I had traveled along the Columbia by train and car. I’d flown over it and even skimmed through the gorge in a helicopter, but a week with Un-Cruise Adventures put me right on the water. When we returned to Portland, I felt like we’d made our own journey of discovery.

Natural Hawaii My husband had never been to Hawaii and showed no interest in the usual kind of Hawaii trip. He didn’t like the idea of a crowded resort with nothing to do but bake in the sun, drinking paper umbrella-adorned concoctions. We both prefer to appreciate nature on our travels, so I knew he would enjoy a week exploring the wilder side of the islands with Un-Cruise Adventures. We flew in a day early, staying at the Hapuna Prince Hotel at Kona to relax. We toasted a beautiful sunset from our balcony, and met up with the rest of the cruisers to board the Wilderness Safari the next day. Hopping from the island of Hawaii to Maui to Lana’i to Moloka’i, we spent time in the company of whales, and even heard their call with the help of a special microphone on the side of the ship. We watched dolphins streak alongside us. We snorkeled with sea turtles and manta rays, photographed colorful island birds and learned about Hawaii’s complex and fascinating history with the help of our guides and guest speakers. As expected, we ate well, enjoying cocktails at the bar and various programs each evening. We got to know the other passengers — another benefit of traveling on a small ship — and made a few new friends. By the time we boarded our return flight we were rested, relaxed and enriched by our time in Hawaii. - Cheryl-Anne Millsap is a travel and lifestyle journalist based in Spokane.

Interior of Hagia Sophia, photo by Dan Webster.

History, culture and much more on a trek through Turkey’s metropolitan center It was French poet/politician Alphonse de Lamartine who said, “If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul.” Writing more than a century-and-a-half later, travel guru Rick Steves turns out to be just as complimentary – if a tad less poetic. “Istanbul,” Steves wrote, “is one of the world’s great cities, period.” Poetic or not, mere words can’t capture all that Istanbul has to offer. A blend of old and new, as well as a traditional interface between Asia and Europe, Istanbul is many things at once. It’s a walker’s dream, even if some streets feel steeper than mountain trails. A gastronomic paradise, the city offers a full range both of Turkish cuisine and the latest Euro-Asian fusion offerings. Though an Islamic mecca, Istanbul boasts a vibrant nightlife. And while it’s a throbbing metropolis of some 14 million souls, the city is home to an estimated 3,000 mosques – each offering ample opportunity for quiet meditation and prayer. Like most great cities, Istanbul is separated into districts best explored by foot. This is especially true of the historic Sultanahmet district (also referred to as the Old Town), which includes such famous sites as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace. But public transportation, whether a city cab, a tram or a ferry, is readily available to take you around the old and new districts of European Istanbul (separated by the Golden Horn inlet) and even across the Straits of Bosphorous to the city’s less-touristy Asian sector.

However you get around, though, the city features a number of sites in European Istanbul that you shouldn’t miss. Following are the main attractions that my wife and I visited last July. Hagia Sophia Nothing speaks more to the seemingly eternal, amply majestic feel of Istanbul than this structure, sometimes called “the incredible jewel of Byzantium.” It stands on the site originally used for a pagan temple, functioned for centuries as a church, then for another 500 years as a mosque, before being secularized and transformed into a museum in 1935. Built and rebuilt over time, today’s Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya in Turkish, which translates, basically, as “Holy Wisdom”) dates to the sixth century, though the passing of time has required periodic restoration, including the preservation of outstanding Byzantine-era mosaics. The Blue Mosque A 10-minute walk from the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque – called so because of the blue tiles that line the upper galleries of the building’s interior – can be found on most “must-see” lists for tourists. Built between 1609 and 1616, the mosque is an active place of prayer and, fittingly, closes during the five daily prayers. Entrance, as with all mosques, is free, though donations are encouraged, lines may be long and dress codes are strictly enforced (see Etiquette note). The Byzantine Hippodrome Now a city park, the open square that sits just west of the Blue Mosque was the site, for more than millennia, of public events ranging from chariot races to coronations. No trace of the former grandstands remains,

P L AT I N U M

and some prominent features have been transported elsewhere (four copper horses of the Hippodrome can now be found at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, Italy). But you can still see the 3,500-year-old Egyptian Obelisk (moved to its present site in 390), though it’s barely a third the height it once was. Topkapi Palace Built between 1466 and 1478 on a peninsula that overlooks three bodies of water – the Golden Horn, the Straits of Bosphorous and the Sea of Marmara – the Topkapi Palace is one of Istanbul’s more visible landmarks. For more than four centuries it served as home to Ottoman governance. A walk through the vast grounds can be a day trip in itself. At its height, the palace housed some 4,000 people, and boasts 400 rooms in the Harem alone. Basilica Cistern Especially during the summer, Istanbul’s temperatures feel much hotter than the 82-degree Fahrenheit average. That’s when a visit to the Basilica Cistern, an underground oasis featured in the 1963 James Bond film “From Russia With Love,” comes in handy. Full of 336 support columns, the naturally cool cistern is notable as a traditional water storage site

and for its two Medusa sculptures – one that sits on its side, the other upside down. The Spice Market Walking the various pathways through the gigantic enclosed market, you’ll see near-countless shops selling everything from actual spices and valuables to the cheapest of souvenir trinkets. My favorite moment: when we walked past a hawker who asked us, in English, “What shall I sell you that you don’t need?” Dolmabahce Palace Situated along the Bosphorous, the waterway that separates the Black Sea from the Sea of Marmara (which eventually drains into the Mediterranean), the Dolmabahce Palace was designed to reflect European tastes over traditional Ottoman opulence. The large grounds include a garden, and the main residence – all 285 rooms – is open for tours provided in Turkish and English. The Golden Horn Rather than buying expensive guided tours up and down the busy waterway, we opted to purchase tickets on one of the many ferries that carry city residents between numerous stops. It’s a thrifty way to travel, and allows you to escape the tourist experience and immerse yourself in everyday Turkish life.

®

Istiklal Street Istiklal Cadessi (or “Independence Street”) is one of the main drags of Istanbul’s new district. It stretches from the main transportation hub, Taksim Square, down to the Tunel neighborhood (where a funicular reprieves walkers from the increasingly steep grade). A great place to join in the throngs of locals making their evening passegiata, or engaging in the occasional impromptu demonstration, Istiklal Street is filled with shops, eateries, coffee shops and hotels to fit any budget and taste. Etiquette in Istanbul Though considered only moderately Islamic, Turkey does make certain demands on visitors to sacred sites. Dress codes include no shorts or sleeveless shirts (on men or women). In addition, women should wear pants or a skirt that extends below the knee, and should cover their heads and shoulders with a scarf or shawl (which will be provided). Be prepared to remove your shoes, be quiet and refrain from use of flash photography. - Dan Webster is a former Spokesman-Review reporter who writes about movies and more at Spokane7.com.

The Call of Croatia Most American travelers get their first sight of Croatia from the deck of a cruise ship. It might be Dubrovnik, the city surrounded by intact Medieval walls on the Adriatic Sea and a UNESCO World Heritage site since the 1970s. Or Split, the largest city in the scenic region of Dalmatia, which contains fascinating medieval, Renaissance and Baroque historical sites that draw millions of tourists to its beautiful beaches each year. But, while most of the attention is focused on these seaside villages and towns and the islands off the coast of Croatia, there is so much more to see, especially in spring and fall. During the shoulder travel seasons, when the crowds thin and hotels empty, there’s room to breathe — to take in the unique beauty, ancient culture and complex modern history of this small country. During a visit in May, the days were warm, the nights cool and everything was green and blooming. Still weeks from the height of the tourist season, I didn’t have to navigate large crowds and peak fares. For those who like to explore by car, Croatia’s freeway system is modern and easily navigated, making it easy to venture inland and explore the heart of this small country.

A Capital Idea To capture the cosmopolitan side of Croatian culture, spend a few days in Zagreb, Croatia’s bustling capital city. Easy to reach from major European gateway airports like Frankfurt or Heathrow, Zagreb — with a population of around 1 million — is as beautiful and elegant as any of Europe’s old, grand cities. But don’t let the Old World glamour fool you. This is a modern hub. Zagreb is built around a horseshoe-shaped greenway of parks and squares, filled with

located in the center of the city, across the street from the beautiful Art Nouveau National Railway building. The grand hotel, built in 1925 and completely restored and renovated in 2004, was one of the original stops on the luxurious Oriental Express as it traveled between Paris and Istanbul. The interior — filled with marble, crystal, ornate stained glass and a wall of large clocks (part of the original decor) telling the time in major cities around the world — reflects the gilded status of the hotel’s origins. A large patio is the perfect place to soak up the late afternoon sun, preferably over a cup of espresso. And Zagreb’s coffee culture rivals that of Vienna. On a sunny day, the many sidewalk cafes around town are packed with students, couples and other people-watchers, lingering for hours over cups of excellent coffee and delicious, delicate pastries. A little shopping and fine dining round out the urban experience in Croatia’s largest city.

flowers in the spring and colorful foliage in fall. Bicycle and Segway tours are easy to arrange and offer a quick way to see the city in a short time. The tram system is an another efficient way to get around, and the airport is only minutes from the city center. Don’t pass up the opportunity to at least step into the lobby of the elegant Esplanade Hotel,

The oldest section of the city, “Upper Town,” sits high on a hillside and can be reached by a short ride on the popular funicular. The more adventurous can climb the hill via the steep, winding, cobblestone lanes and the view is worth it, no matter how you get to the top.

0% of the country, is often compared to Tuscany, and with good reason. Rolling hills, dotted with stone villas and villages, are surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, reflecting the Italian heritage that is still very much a part of the region. Tangible traces of the region’s Roman past remain, including the Roman Arena in the city of Pula. Istria is well-known for its wines, particularly the fruity Malvasia and the robust Teran, and seafood is an important part of the local cuisine. Another Istrian specialty is the truffle. Three kinds of black truffles, as well as the larger white truffle, can be found in the dark soil of Istrian forests and visitors can even participate in a truffle hunt, following trained dogs that help harvest the prized and valuable fungi. I joined a truffle hunt near the small town of Buzet. When the dog we followed found two truffles, one after the other, I was asked to gently unearth the fragile buried treasure while the group leader worked on the other. Someone snapped a photo of me holding the truffle prize, my hands and fingernails caked with dirt, and it’s one of my favorite travel souvenirs. Later, we feasted on omelets sprinkled with paper thin slices of aromatic truffle, and glasses of fullbodied red Istrian wine. To this day, it’s one of the best meals I’ve ever tasted.

Wild and Wonderful Of Croatia’s seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, only one is a natural wonder. Emerging as one of the “Must See” destinations in the world, Plitvice National

Park encompasses a series of 16 beautiful turquoise-colored lakes connected by waterfalls and whitewater cascades and draws millions each year. The park is especially beautiful in spring when the foliage is lush and new, when snowmelt and spring rain swells the streams and spills over to the falls. The mineral-rich water moves constantly, creating new, otherworldly-formations. More than 10 miles of boardwalk and bridges cover the perimeter of the park’s lakes and waterfalls.

Small Town, Big Views In summer and early fall, the Istrian landscape flares into autumnal color. It’s the perfect time to visit Hum, a tiny hamlet situated high on a hill overlooking a scenic valley. With a population of fewer than 25 people, Hum claims to be the smallest town in the world. While some might argue the title, the appeal of the old stone fortress city, with its weathered buildings and towers and expansive hilltop views, can’t be disputed. Biking is popular in Croatia and one of the most popular routes is the Glagolitic Alley, a 3-kilometer path up to Hum, interspersed with massive stone monuments dedicated to the old Croatian Glagolitic script. Outfitters provide the bikes, and if the view at the top isn’t reward enough, a hearty meal and a bottle of Croatian wine turn lunch into a true celebration. Travel trends come and go, but Croatia, with its dramatic landscapes, picturesque architecture, complex culture and and historically significant past, is a destination worthy of a spot on any traveler’s bucket list.

BIKES and BIKES W

hen you feel the wind rush toward you and taste the freedom that comes with exploring the world on two wheels, nothing quite compares. Whether you’re pedaling around on a bicycle or revving up your motorcycle engine, summertime is the perfect season for a two-wheeled adventure. “Bikes can be a pivotal way to get around, and create joy in people’s lives,” said Lynn Ellis, co-owner of MonkeyBoy Bicycles in Kendall Yards, which specializes in “urban jungle” bicycles.

The local chapter of the Harley Owners Group, Lone Wolf H.O.G. 2460, has over 1,200 members who meet regularly to ride, share meals and more. And there are plenty of cycling clubs in Eastern Washington as well, from racing clubs like Baddlands Cycling Club to Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance Eastern Washington Chapter, which helps maintain sustainable trails and offers classes to develop better riding skills. Whether you’re riding in a pack or solo, the right style of bike and accessories will make the experience even more enjoyable.

The sense of community amongst both kinds of bikers enhances the experience.

All the Northwest’s a Stage Looking forward to a variety of local theater opportunities

ike the rest of the region’s art scene, area theaters are booming.

“There’s a lot of theater, and a lot of it is high quality,” said George Green, executive artistic director of The Modern Theater. “This is probably the most affluent time as a theater industry we’ve ever had, and I foresee that continuing.” Rising from the foundations of Spokane Interplayers Ensemble and the Lake City Playhouse, the Modern Theater offers a range of professional stage productions in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene. The Spokane Civic Theatre, meanwhile, continues its long run as an award-winning playhouse. With as cult favorite “The Rocky Horror Show” in its West Coast premiere and family-friendly “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” Civic marketing coordinator John Michael Collins says the organization’s 70th season should offer “a really good lineup of shows.” “I think that’s exciting,” Collins said. “It should get the community excited, too, and bring them in.” And smaller, but no less committed organizations such as Ignite! Community Theatre and Stage Left Theater, as well as the Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre, are doing their part.

MOTORCYLES

BICYLES

Adventure models are popular at Spokane’s Westside Motors, according to owner Scott Schmidtman. Consider this year’s BMW R 1200 GS Adventure, which handles long tours as well as rough roads, thanks to two standard-fitted ride modes available at the press of a button. The latest model also features optimized fuel efficiency for an extra-long ride, plus an onboard computer for navigation and ride data. (Available locally through Westside Motors)

Light and strong, Detroit Bikes A-Type is a great commuter for daily trips to work or the park. Its simple, black matte finish has a nice industrial look — which makes sense for a bicycle made in the Motor City — that is more resistant to the chips and nicks you might encounter on the road.

Nearly 40 years after the first HarleyDavidson® Low Rider® debuted, this year’s Low Rider® S takes the iconic design even further. The Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110™ engine rests in a Dyna chassis, and tall bars, mid-mount controls and a new seat position allow the rider to really rule the road. (Available locally through Lone Wolf Harley-Davidson) A modern take on classic sports bike, the Triumph Bonneville T120 features a brand-new 1200cc hightorque engine to create a ride that’s powerful yet smooth. With intricate detailing, including chrome Triumph tank badges, passenger grab rail and twin chrome exhaust headers with silencers, the new Bonneville is already a collector’s item. (Available locally through Empire Cycle)

The retro-inspired, open-face Scorpion Belfast helmet goes with just about every kind of bike out there, but its style doesn’t sacrifice safety. The fiberglass shell is lightweight while still measuring up to top industry standards, and saddle tan Nappa leather covers the protective EPS lining. (Available through shopping.scorpionusa.com)

No matter how far you’re going, a helmet is not an optional accessory. While creating stylish helmets that provide safety and comfort, Urge Bike Products also focuses on the environment when manufacturing its Activist helmet; recycled Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is used to make the inner shell, and the outer shell is finished with an ABS dyeing process. Plus, all Urge helmets have straps made of recycled PET and use minimal packaging.

has almost too much to see – even over a full season. “There’s a lot to choose from,” Green said, adding that such quality and range of material – not just in theater but all the arts – gives the overall community an even better opportunity to sell itself. “I think Spokane itself is starting to realize what effect the arts – and I’ll speak specifically about the theatrical arts – have on various aspects, especially the real estate market,” he said. “People want to move to a city that is culturally diverse.” Photo courtesy of Best of Broadway. - Dan Webster
