Celebrating over 135 Years of Service to the Inland Northwest Proud Sponsor of the

81st Annual Spokane Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade

Grand Parade Marshal Brigadier General Paul H. Guemmer Brigadier General Paul Guemmer served in the United States Air Force for 30 years. Retiring in 2018, he is a Command Pilot with more than 4,700 flying hours and more than 240 combat and combat support hours in seven different aircraft, including the KC-135. A graduate of the University of New Mexico, General Guemmer completed three master’s degrees in management, strategy and operations management. He is a veteran of five combat deployments and relocated 14 times over his career. Of note, he was a part of three Joint Services assignments, two at the Pentagon and one at US TRANSCOM at Scott Air Force Base. He was the Squadron Commander of the 21st Airlift Squadron of C-5s at Travis Air Force Base, the Vice Wing Commander of the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing in Southwest Asia and, of course, was the Wing Commander at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane with the 92nd Air Refueling Wing from 2010-2012. Following that assignment, he was Commander at the Jeanne M. Holm Center for Officer Accessions and Citizen Development at Maxwell Air Force Base. General Guemmer is joined by his wife, Cyndi, to lead the Spokane Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade. They have three children and are very proud to say they are grandparents to two new grand babies.

Honorary Parade Marshal Chief Master Sergeant Rudy Lopez

Committed to the communities we serve. Avista is proud to be a part of the Lilac Festival tradition.

myavista.com

Rudy Lopez is the Director of the Washington State Veterans Cemetery, the final resting place of veterans from all branches of the military. Rudy, a Retired United States Air Force Veteran, served 30 years on behalf of his country, most memorably to Spokane residents, at Fairchild Air Force Base as Command Chief of the 92nd Air Refueling Wing from 2010-2013. Lopez served during the same period that Brigadier General Guemmer was Wing Commander of the Base, During Rudy’s time in the Air Force, he served in the medical field working to preserve the lives and welfare of our service members. He is, in fact, proud of having the highest survival rate of those treated at Joint Base Balad while serving as Superintendent of the Medical Group while stationed there. It is fitting, that now, Rudy helps bring closure and dignity to the end of life tributes for those who have served. Rudy’s commitment to the “Missing in America Veterans Recovery Program,” has earned the local Veterans Cemetery nationwide press coverage as those involved with the cemetery assist in identifying unclaimed service member remains and honoring them with a ceremonial internment. Command Chief Lopez is joined by his wife, Maria, in leading the Spokane Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade.

2019 Spokane Lilac Festival President’s Message

Mayor’s Welcome

O

Spokane in the spring is a place of festivals and events, of running and street hoops, and, of course, of parades and princesses. Celebrating its 81st year, the Lilac Festival is part of the fabric of our community.

ur family moved to Spokane in 2008 when my husband Brad was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base. We fell in love with Spokane and it became “our city of choice” as our permanent home. I joined the Spokane Lilac Festival eight years ago and quickly became very involved, serving in many capacities as my passion has always been with community and military.

Our 2019 Festival theme, “We Are Spokane,” is about the “who” in Spokane’s story beginning with our Native American history, our city’s pioneering families, our great Spokane River and the downtown, industries, railroad and now our fabulous Riverfront Park that developed along its banks. It is about our amazing events like the Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade now celebrating 81 years, Hoopfest, Bloomsday and other “community enriching” events, as well as structures that have historical distinction like the Davenport Hotel and St. John’s Cathedral. It includes Spokane’s aviation history, and the growth of the medical community and higher education that provide services and benefit our people and our economy. It is all of these attributes that entice people to visit and sometimes decide to make Spokane their home. Our city is made up of people of many origins – the ones born and raised here and the many transplanted here to serve in the military, start new businesses, or receive their career education; all who have their own stories. Many have become involved in our fabulous events, striving to keep Spokane unique and fostering community engagement and spirit. The Lilac Festival in 2019 wanted to capture Spokane’s rich history, its growth and success in its theme, “We are Spokane.” As my husband Brad and I have participated in community events across the country, we believe the Lilac Festival has a unique mission to make our Spokane truly shine. In our mission we strive to empower our youth, showcase our city throughout the Northwest and honor our military, past and present. We invite you to join in the celebration of “We Are Spokane” and the many activities offered during Lilac Festival week. Thank you to all the individuals, businesses, organizations, and volunteers for their extraordinary support in time, treasure and talent that have been the ingredients of the Festival’s success over its 81 year history!

Kristy Hamby 2019 President

Spokane Lilac Festival

The tradition and pageantry join today’s heroes to tomorrow’s leaders in a family environment that embodies the hometown flavor of our city and the global contributions we make. The Lilac Festival takes a year-round commitment by many, many volunteers. The event is far more than a parade. It is, in fact, two parades, awards ceremonies, benefit luncheons, a City royalty program, and much more. As I go about my work as Mayor of Spokane, I am continually impressed by our citizens’ willingness to give of their time, talent, and treasure, and I recognize how much this festival and its volunteers contribute to our community. Thank you for your continued support of the Festival. We are proud to honor the members of our Armed Forces and recognize the talented youth in our community. Enjoy the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade and the evening in downtown Spokane. David A. Condon, Mayor City of Spokane

W

elcome to our 81st year of the Spokane Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade! We are here to represent and celebrate everything that makes our “We Are Spokane” theme something to be proud of. From our Native history to our unique attractions such as Bloomsday, Hoopfest, and our Spokane River, Spokane is full of diversity. I am incredibly honored to advocate for everything Spokane as the 2019 Spokane Lilac Festival Queen alongside the lovely Princesses Makayla, Grace, Maggie, Sydney, Brooke, and Lilian. Together we have served with local organizations like Blessings Under the Bridge, Habitat for Humanity, and Project Beauty Share. Many community members have even taken the time to share their knowledge and help us blossom into the best versions of ourselves. These experiences help us to uphold and spread our powerful mission statement of honoring our military, empowering our youth, and showcasing our region. Tonight, we are here to focus on honoring our beloved and invaluable military. With the Fairchild Air Force base close by, our military is near and dear to our community. Our parade gives us the perfect opportunity to support and recognize those who have put service before themselves to give all citizens of the United States of America our many rights and freedoms. Our military connects us together under one common flag, and we are incredibly grateful for their service. Along with the military members that unite us, it is the efforts of our non-military citizens that support and serve our community that help make up the wonderful region of Spokane. The 2019 Royal Court thanks you all for your service, in whichever way you are able to show it. Please find time to thank each hard working Lilac Director or “Purple-Coater,”our generous Lilac Sponsors, and our creative and talented “Float Toads” who make this night so impactful. Without the help of Avista, the Associated Garden Clubs of Spokane, the Spokane Kiwanis Foundation Charities, and the numerous generous individuals who have provided the court with substantial scholarship support, our continuing educations wouldn’t be the same. We are so grateful for our beautiful gowns donated by Believe Bride, lovely wardrobe and scholarship support from Fred Meyer, sparkling jewelry from Pounders Jewelry, cozy royalty coach from Gus Johnson and the Instant Sign Factory for the logo wrap, BMW of Spokane for parading our Teachers of the Year, and every other generous sponsor who makes our experience and scholarships possible. Thank you to those who allow for this night to take place, whether its by attending our festivities, celebrating from afar, donating, or running the parade, and a very special thank you to those who serve or have served our country to give us this chance to honor them. We hope that as the parade goes on, you can each reflect on the unique parts of our community and see why we are so proud to call this place our home. We hope that tonight is magical for each and every attendee, and hope to make this a celebration to never forget. Thank you for your part. Lilac Love, Queen Madison, 2019 Lilac Festival Queen

HONORARY PARADE MARSHAL

Don Kardong

Retiring Bloomsday Run Director Don Kardong The 2019 Spokane Lilac Festival recognizes Don Kardong as Honorary Parade Marshal for his leadership role in the Lilac Bloomsday Run’s inception and growth into a nationally recognized event with participation ranging from recreational runners to internationally renowned racers. The idea of the Bloomsday event sprung from a chance meeting between Kardong and Mayor David Rodgers in 1977. Kardong became President of the Lilac Bloomsday Association serving in that capacity from 1982-1984 and accepted the position of Director in the summer of 2004. As the founder of the Bloomsday event, Kardong described its objectives as a

celebration of spring coupled with an event fostering physical fitness for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. That mission continues to this day inspiring tens of thousands of participants from our region and around the nation to join in this extraordinary event. Kardong is an author, journalist and noted runner himself, finishing fourth in the marathon event of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. The name Don Kardong is known to everyone in Spokane, and he is held in high esteem in the national running community. Show your appreciation for Don’s gift of the Lilac Bloomsday Run to Spokane as he is honored in the Lilac Festival parade.
