SPOKANE’S FIRST ANNUAL LILAC FESTIVAL FINDS CITY A BOWER OF FRAGRANT BLOOMS….was the headline in the May 17, 1938, Spokane Daily Chronicle. The article related that heavy rain showers led up to the small downtown parade. The festival’s name and parade date, the third Saturday in May, with weather threatening the festivities, all sound familiar today, but there the similarities end! The first Lilac Festival had a singular purpose: to showcase, in every conceivable way, Spokane’s iconic flower, the lilac. To be sure there was a parade with one float (a pickup truck) bedecked with fresh lilacs, accompanied by seven cars heavily laden with lilac bouquets. There was no royal court, however, “seven pretty girls” adorned the float, three from Adams Elementary School, two “older girls” from North Central High School and two from Spokane Junior College. All the girls carried huge bouquets; in the photo, the smallest girls appear nearly overwhelmed by their armfuls of lilacs. A new song, titled “Lilacs,” made its appearance in print the day of the Festival. The 1938 parade featured no military units, bands, horses or classic cars and that continued for several years to come. As time went by, most dramatically after World War II, commercial floats, high school bands, military service units and drill teams joined the procession. The highlights of the l938 Lilac Festival were, in fact, lilacs of every hue, shade and variety. Lilacs provided the centerpiece of most downtown store display windows and interiors. The Davenport Hotel lobby, according to the newspaper story was a “bower” of
lilacs and the fountain at the center of the lobby was “dressed in lilacs…and every vase and jardinière throughout the hotel was filled with fragrant blooms.” The article describes French, Japanese and Persian varieties, some blooms 15 inches tall with clusters, a foot wide. The big event of the 1938 Festival was a competition with prizes for the best quality and display of lilacs. One of the members of the judging committee was Walter Peters, the founder of family owned Peters & Sons Florist. To place in context the early Spokane Lilac Festival’s emphasis on the celebrated flower, the whole concept of a Spokane Lilac Festival arose at a meeting of enterprising women, members of the Associated Garden Club and Spokane Floral Society. Member Lila Sayre was credited with raising her hand, saying, “Why don’t we have a celebration associated with lilacs?” Fast forward to the 2018 Lilac Festival. Our city can take immense pride in the fact that the Festival’s parade is reputed to be the largest of its type in our nation, with 198 entries from across the Northwest and viewed by over 150,000 spectators. In addition, many other Festival events and attractions lead up to the grand finale, the Spokane Lilac Festival Armed Services Torchlight Parade. The Spokane Lilac Festival turns 80 this year and what a marvelous gift that small group of garden club women and other Festival “pioneers” gave the City of Spokane! 2018 Spokane Lilac Festival President’s Message
Mayor’s Welcome
W
elcome to the 80th anniversary of the Spokane Lilac Festival and Armed Forces Torchlight Parade! We are grateful to all the citizens of Spokane County and beyond for their unwavering support of our festival and our values: Honoring our Military, Empowering our Youth and Showcasing our Region. This year’s theme “Swing into Spokane” is an invitation to everyone in the Pacific Northwest to “swing into” Spokane and enjoy all the events, natural beauty and amenities we have to offer. Our Festival commemorative pin depicts our city’s outstanding events that you won’t want to miss: Bloomsday, Hoopfest, Pigout in the Park and Skyfest at Fairchild Air Force Base. And because this year is our 80th Anniversary, a historical milestone, the 2018 float is a “throwback” to one designed for the Festival during Expo ‘74 when my father, King Cole, was Expo ‘74 president. I chose the 2018 float design from that year as a tribute and celebration of our city and its legacy. We tweaked and re-invented the float and we hope you’ll find it as enchanting as we do. We encourage you to take part in all the events coming up during Festival week, including the BECU “Spokane’s Got Talent” Show and the Lilac Festival Birthday Gala as listed in this program. On parade day, May 19, we know you will enjoy the festivities in the park including a kids’ play area in the Clock Tower Meadow, Dreamship in the Lilac Bowl (a traveling hot air balloon that offers tethered rides with donations benefiting children of fallen soldiers), the beautifully renovated Looft carrousel and even a beer garden to quench your thirst, hosted by the Hillyard Kiwanis. We also have a wonderful “Cruisin’ the Falls” Car Show, co-presented with the Spokane Car Club right downtown, near many restaurants and shops to keep you busy. On Sunday you don’t want to miss the Lilac Century Fun Bike Ride starting at 6 a.m. at SCC. There’s something for everyone! On Saturday, May 19 at 7:45 p.m., we invite you to enjoy the pageantry and fun of our 80th Spokane Lilac Festival parade, and we thank you again for all your support!
Nancy Cole 2018 Spokane Lilac Festival President
As Mayor of Spokane, I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to all guests and participants in the 80th Lilac Festival. One of Spokane’s great urban advantages is the city’s rich tradition of festivals and events. This year’s Lilac Festival celebrates those who protect our freedoms and officially welcomes families and guests to “Swing into Spokane” for an outstanding summer of activities and attractions. The tradition and pageantry of the festival joins today’s heroes to tomorrow’s leaders in a family environment that embodies the hometown flavor of our city and the global contributions we make. Thank you for your continued support of the Festival. We are proud to honor the members of our Armed Forces and recognize the talented youth in our community. Enjoy the Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight parade and the evening in downtown Spokane.
David A. Condon, Mayor City of Spokane

2018 Spokane Lilac Festival’s Queen Halle
The Spokane Lilac Festival’s 2018 Royal Court
W
elcome to this year’s 80th Spokane Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade! Please join me as we “Swing into Spokane” and celebrate the rich culture and countless festivities our region has to offer. I am incredibly honored to serve as your Queen in this monumental year and look forward to representing our city along with some of my very best friends, Princesses Sophia, Hayden, Kennedy, Marley, Grace and Samantha. Throughout the past few months, we have been privileged to participate in various community events that have not only shaped us to become better versions of ourselves, but have instilled in us a new sense of gratitude for our beautiful city and its traditions. We hope that tonight, you too gain a new appreciation for the amazing place we are proud to call home. Growing up in Spokane, the Lilac Parade was always my favorite event! As I gained more understanding behind the Lilac mission of honoring the military, empowering our youth and showcasing our region, I knew this organization was something I wanted to be a part of. The event took on a much deeper meaning for me after losing my Grandfather, a Vietnam War Veteran. He taught me the sacrifices made every day by our military personnel to ensure the freedoms that we, as citizens of the United States, often take for granted. He was my role model, biggest supporter and number one fan, and I know that this night meant the world to him. Tonight is our opportunity to come together as one to honor our local military heroes as well as each other – for this community would not be the same without the collective love and adoration that citizens like you have. While the court and I would love to personally thank each individual that helped to make this event a success, we know this is an impossible task. Tonight, we’re asking you to help us out – if you see a purple coater, a Lilac Sponsor, a “Float Toad” or even the spectator sitting next to you, please thank them and let them know their hard work did not go unnoticed. Without their generous financial contributions and their continuous, selfless service for this program, tonight would simply not be possible. I hope that tonight is filled with love and appreciation for Spokane and cherished and unforgettable memories. Lilac Love, Queen Halle, 2018 Lilac Festival Queen
Princesses: Sophie, Mt. Spokane; Hayden, Joel E. Ferris; Kennedy, Lewis and Clark; Queen Halle, North Central; Princesses: Marley, Freeman; Grace, Mead; Samantha, John R. Rogers

WELCOME 2018 LILAC FESTIVAL GRAND PARADE MARSHAL
Brigadier General Rhonda Cornum The Festival is honored to have Brigadier General Rhonda Cornum as 2018 Grand Parade Marshal. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Cornum received a PhD from Cornell University, MD from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and a degree from the National War College. Her awards for military service include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, POW Medal and Purple Heart, U.S. Army. As a US Army flight surgeon, Cornum became one of two American service women taken prisoner in the 1991Persian Gulf War against Iraq, her resilience demonstrated that women soldiers could serve in expanded roles in wartime. Cornum’s memoir about that experience was published to critical acclaim in 1992. In 2003, in the second conflict between the United States and Iraq, she was the first female commander of a military hospital, the largest outside the United States, treating many soldiers wounded in Iraq. When new military roles were opened to women in 1993, Cornum’s service in the Gulf War was credited with proving that women could serve in important roles and brave the dangers of war. Her conduct as a prisoner “was a validation that women…have the strength, stamina and mental courage to meet the demands.” (U.S. News and World Report). Cornum’s husband Kory is an Air Force colonel and orthopedist and they have served together in several posts.
YOUR COMMUNITY PARTNER TODAY. AND TOMORROW. The Spokane Tribe is proud to be an official sponsor of the Lilac Festival and Armed Forces Parade. We’re also proud to support the diverse communities within our community by sponsoring family-friendly events and programs. Please join us for our annual fireworks celebration at Two Rivers Resort on July 7th. Find out more at SPOKANETRIBE.COM.

HONORARY PARADE MARSHALS
Central Valley H.S. Girls Basketball Team The C. V. Girls Basketball Team had to withdraw from the Parade due to scheduling conflicts....the Festival and Spokane applaud their achievement! The Central Valley Girls Basketball Team, the BEARS, claimed the 2018 GEICO High School National Championship title. Going into the national tournament, held in New York, they ranked as a three seeded entry and had no losses during the season. They defeated Hamilton Heights Christian Academy from Chattanooga, Tennessee to win the title. Earlier in the season, the Bears won their second state championship in three seasons. Congratulations to these outstanding young athletes who have put Spokane on the map with their national championship! You make us proud!
You’re our hero. You’re important to your community. You’re also important to us. If you need financial services, we’ll be ready to talk. We’re committed to helping you find the options that can help you succeed financially. We salute the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. wellsfargo.com
