S

ome years ago, the directors of the Portland Rose Festival very aptly chose a Festival theme, “As if by Magic.” What that conveyed was that the fabulous floral parade was created by magic, like a rabbit, just popping out of a hat, and thrilling the thousands of spectators lining the streets of Portland. The Spokane Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade has that same illusion of magic. At 7:45 p.m. on the third Saturday in May, the sidewalks along the downtown streets are crowded with toddlers to 90+ year old parade viewers, over 160,000 in number. They expectantly await the Fairchild Air Force Base KC 135 to appear over Riverfront Park’s vintage clock tower and the cannon’s boom as the parade “magically pops out of the magician’s hat” emerging from the Park, down Washington Street to the cheers, salutes, smiles and applause of the throngs in the bleachers and lining the sidewalk. “As if by magic” the parade advances down the street, the military in formation, shoulders thrust back, spines straight, faces solemn, marching in perfect cadence, proudly displaying their flags followed by cars with waving dignitaries and veterans; the high school band members, eyes focused, marching and filling the air with soul stirring music; then highly polished cars, vintage and state-ofthe-art of automotive engineering; beautiful, accomplished young women, royalty from towns and cities, waving atop glittering, magical floats, the creations of volunteers from Northwest towns and cities; and the list goes on with over 200 entries. The other part of the magic is that the Festival parade and other events are the result of thousands of volunteer hours and equally important, the support of sponsors and individual

contributors. The Festival directors and hundreds of additional community volunteers contribute innumerable hours of know-how and labor with float building as well as parade coordination and the training and guidance of royalty. In addition, all branches of the military services and Spokane City and County workers provide expertise and labor toward traffic management, parade safety and cleanup. The Lilac Festival theme this year is “Celebrating Our Heroes,” honoring the men and women who serve in the military, first responders with police and fire departments and all volunteers…not just in Spokane, but in towns and cities throughout our nation. There is magic in what is achieved by these heroes and their selfless acts of public service and volunteerism! Thank you to all! You make the “magic happen!” Marilyn Thordarson 47 year Lilac Festival Director

Don’t miss the Festival’s new magic this year…The U.S. Navy Week is joining the Spokane Lilac Festival in the week’s events, offering musical entertainment and amazing exhibits. In addition, a Festival sponsor, the Spokane Tribe of Indians, will present “Festival Fireworks” in Riverfront Park on Wednesday, May 17, immediately following the U.S. Northwest Navy Band free concert at 7 p.m. in the INB Performing Arts Center.

2017 Spokane Lilac Festival Co-Presidents’ Message

O

n behalf of the Spokane Lilac Festival Association, it is an honor to welcome you to the 79th Anniversary of Lilac Festival and a week full of events culminating in the nation’s largest Armed Forces Torchlight Parade. The Festival is an opportunity to welcome those who are both new or native to our wonderful city, and offer them an opportunity to celebrate and create memories with their families and friends.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Our Heroes” reflects upon the Festival’s mission statement of “Honoring Our Military, Recognizing Our Youth and Showcasing Our Region.” This year we’re shining a spotlight on those who serve not only in our military but everyday heroes who wear a uniform: the men and women of law enforcement, fire protection and EMT’s, as well as countless folks who volunteer their time and efforts for the greater benefit of their communities. We, as Lilac Festival Co-Presidents, are honored and excited to be part of this grand annual event and hope you will join us! Karen Montague and Cindy Zapotocky 2017 Spokane Lilac Festival, Co-Presidents

Mayor’s Welcome

O

Thank you for your continued support of the Festival. We are proud to honor the members of our Armed Forces and recognize the talented youth in our community. Enjoy the Armed Forces Torchlight parade and the evening in downtown Spokane. David A. Condon, Mayor City of Spokane

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Our Heroes,” upholds the Festival’s mission statement of honoring our military, recognizing our youth and showcasing our region. As Lilac Festival Royalty, we are very excited to celebrate the heroes in our lives and represent Spokane throughout the Northwest. This year’s Festival continues the legacy of unforgettable events and valuable time spent bringing the community together in honoring the men and women who bravely serve our community and our country. The Royal Court members are honored to have you experience this parade alongside us. I would like to thank all of the sponsors of the Lilac Festival, supporters, countless dedicated volunteers and all the members of the community for making the Festival parade and other events possible. Thank you to our Festival leadership, every purple coater, royalty chaperones and float “toads” who volunteer time, talent and treasure in making this organization so marvelous. Thank you to Princesses Taylor, Ava, Olivia, Marissa, Hannah and Summer for their hearts of service and inspiring me to be my best self! Serving as Spokane’s 2017 Lilac Festival Queen is an incredible honor with countless opportunities to serve the Spokane community. Since I was five years old, I have attended the Festival and am truly proud to represent Spokane. My love and appreciation for this community has grown immensely and shaped me into a better person who is, with, and for others. I hope you have a wonderful evening full of unforgettable memories and plenty of kettle corn!

Welcome 2017 Spokane Lilac Festival Parade Honorary Grand Marshall

Rear Admiral Kevin J. “Komrade” Kovacich Rear Admiral Kovacich is the director of Plans and Policy (J5) at Headquarters, U.S. Cyber Command, Fort Meade, Maryland. He was raised in an Air Force family and calls Spokane, Washington home. He served as Grand Marshall of the Festival parade in 2012 and we welcome him back to lead off the parade and appear at other events during Festival week which this year coincides with U.S. Navy Week in Spokane. Admiral Kovacich has served on many tours, most recently as director of the Joint Integration and Capabilities Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operation (OpNAV) staff, and director of Strategy, Plans and Programs (J5) United States Africa Command. Kovacich has accumulated over 4,000 flight hours and 800 arrested landings. Awards include the James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, among many other campaign and service awards.

Committed to the communities we serve.

The Lilac Festival is honored to welcome Rear Admiral Kevin J. Kovacich to Spokane as its Honorary Grand Marshall of the 2017 Armed Forces Torchlight Parade.

Welcome Councilor Kieran O’Hanlon, Mayor of the City and County of Limerick

Avista is proud to be a part of the Lilac Festival tradition.

The Spokane Lilac Festival is privileged to have Lord Mayor Kieran O’Hanlon join the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade and participate in other Festival events. Mayor O’Hanlon is the 820th Mayor of Limerick and was elected to the position of Mayor of both City and County of Limerick in 2016, the title was combined for city and county in 2013. He is also an accomplished accordionist! The Spokane-Limerick Sister Society began on March 4, 1990 to foster and encourage bonds of friendship and understanding between the two cities and bring Irish cultural events to Spokane. The two cities are described as “twins” because of similar size and rivers that flow through the hearts of both Spokane and Limerick. In contrast, however, Limerick claims 800 years as a city, while Spokane was incorporated in 1881, only 136 years ago! Spokane and Limerick have formed a bond of friendship over the past 17 years; most recently in 2012, Mayor David Condon and the Lilac Festival Royal Court were ambassadors for Spokane visiting Limerick. There was a return visit to Spokane by a delegation led by the Lord Mayor to attend the Sister City International Conference. Joining Lord Mayor during the Lilac Festival is County Limerick Chief Executive Officer Conn Murray.

LOVE THE LILAC FESTIVAL? PLACE A BID AND ENJOY THESE TREASURES IN YOUR HOME! “Lilac City Stars” Quilt

“Guardian Angel” Clock

A stunningly beautiful quilt, featuring 28 “Lone Stars” in vibrant shades of lilac with a centerpiece golden star, was designed and hand crafted by the Frayed Edges Quilt Guild of Spokane, as a contribution to the Spokane Lilac Festival and its Royalty Scholarship Fund. The quilt measures 100” by 100” inches, queen size, and has custom pillowcases and shams. The Frayed Edges quilters donated in excess of 450 hours and award winning Terry Engleman brought together all the quilt “pieces” into the completed masterpiece. Minimum bid of $500. Pictured with the quilt: Bonnie Nussbaum and Heidi Libby.

Rich Weatherly, craftsman, created the “Guardian Angel” clock as a contribution to the Spokane Lilac Festival. His work is intricately and beautifully carved and the clock chimes on the quarter hour. Rich has made hundreds of clocks and contributes them as auction items to many charities. The clock is valued at $500 and there is no minimum bid.

Both the quilt and clock will be displayed in The Historic Davenport Lobby, May 18-20 and bids may be made on the Festival website at www.spokanelilacfestival.org. Bidding on both items closes on May 20, 12 a.m. midnight.

The Lilac Festival Association continues to shape the Spokane landscape for the good. Now in its 79th year, the blossoming of the Festival’s love for the city, love of our youth and love of our military always brings a spring to my step, when I see activities multiply as the Torchlight parade nears on May 20. Living in so many communities, I am enthralled by Spokane, and the Lilac Festival’s hardy volunteers give so much of their time and treasure to honor us, the younger generations, and of course, all branches of the military who keep us safe. When I was Commander at Fairchild, I was fond of saying Spokane was the Air Force Base’s firm foundation and this red, white and blue heart is still beating strong. Looking closely, you can see that patriotic heart has a tinge of lilac to it, the secret of our ongoing success.

The Lilac Festival has always been one of my favorite Spokane springtime traditions. Being the Queen of this Spokane treasure and representing our city with my Royal Court was one of the greatest honors I could have hoped to receive as a high school senior. In 1996, Global Credit Union was the title sponsor of the Lilac Parade. Later that same year I started my career in Global’s call center. Over the next two decades I continued to learn and grow within our community and while in my position at the credit union, I earned a BA from Eastern Washington University and an MBA from Whitworth. The friends and mentors I made through the Lilac Festival helped shape the person I am today. Thank you to the many volunteers, businesses and citizens who make the Lilac Parade possible each and every year. I am proud to call the Lilac City home.

For most people in the Spokane area, the Lilac Festival means Royalty and the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade in May. Unseen are the hundreds of hours that go into the oat design and construction and the detail and organization required to put together the parade. It’s also not well known that the Spokane Lilac Festival represents Spokane at numerous festivals throughout the Inland Northwest and cities on the west side of the state. None of this could be done without the hundreds of volunteers involved in these activities. In addition, thousands of dollars and contributed resources have been required to support the Festival over its history of 79 years. In recent times, some communities have discontinued their Festivals because of lack of funds. We must not allow that to happen to our Lilac Festival! It is my hope that Spokane will continue to value and support the Spokane Lilac Festival for many years into the future. Paul Redmond, Past President Lilac Festival, 1979
