UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – United States Golf Association executive director Mike Davis takes these phone calls all the time.

It usually begins with someone telling Davis, “I’ve got the perfect U.S. Open course for you.” It usually leads to nothing of the sort, rarely advancing beyond the original call.

But one call a decade ago commanded Davis’ attention. He listened as USGA western region director Ron Read described how a reclaimed gravel pit was being shaped into a world-class gem named Chambers Bay.

“I kind of held the phone out here and said, ‘Yeah, I’ve heard this one before,’ ” recalled Davis, raising both eyebrows and moving the phone away from his ear.

Read said the site was just outside of Tacoma on

the shores of Puget Sound. Davis knew that the U.S. Open had never been staged in the Pacific Northwest.

“I said, ‘Keep going,’ ” Davis said.

Read told Davis the property had enormous potential, featuring elevation changes and stunning views of the sound.

“It’s gorgeous,” Davis thought, “that’s interesting.”

Read told him the site was huge, spanning nearly 1,000 acres.

“Really?” Davis said. “I’m thinking we have enough room for the infrastructure.”

Read told him the course was owned by Pierce County.

Ladenburg was able visionary Developed site with U.S. Open in mind

John Ladenburg didn’t take up golf until he was in his early 50s.

Slow-pitch softball was his game and he played for the Family, featuring his eight brothers and assorted relatives.

The former Pierce County executive hit a grand slam with Chambers Bay outside of Tacoma, which will host the U.S. Open next month. The gorgeous links course, the U.S. Open, perhaps the biggest sporting event ever held in the Pacific Northwest – none of it would have happened without Ladenburg’s vision, determination, and political acumen.

He pictured a world-class golf course on an abandoned gravel pit.

Many thought Ladenburg needed to get his eyes checked, but he pushed, demanded and finagled to keep the $20 million project moving forward.

“I did a lot of wheeling and dealing and twisting arms,” Ladenburg said. “The other day I was on Facebook and a former council member posted about Chambers Bay and remembering the day Ladenburg he voted on it. I posted back, ‘Do you still remember the broken leg?’ He replied, ‘No, it was a broken arm.’

“A lot of people didn’t understand what I was doing. I was convinced it was the right thing to do. I used all my political capital to get it done.”

Along the way, Ladenburg and others weren’t afraid to make hard decisions. One of Ladenburg’s most important calls was choosing Robert “Bobby” Trent Jones Jr.’s company to design the course. Chambers Bay would be 18 holes instead of 27, leaving plenty of spectator/tent space.

Golfers would walk instead of using power carts, helping protect the fine fescue grass.

Decisions were made with one goal: landing a U.S. Open. Ladenburg said he read a book on Bethpage Black, the first municipal course to host the national championship, and was convinced Chambers Bay could do the same.

“As I told my staff, the danger is not that we shoot high and fail,” said Ladenburg, a Gonzaga law graduate now in private practice. “The danger is we shoot low and succeed. Why don’t we go for the best.”

That meant not only building a great course but one with the acreage to accommodate the 35,000 fans, media, volunteers, hospitality tents and portable bleachers that come with hosting the national championship.

“We measured how much tent space was used at previous Opens,” Ladenburg said, “and we basically doubled it.”

More than 50 architects, including Jack Nicklaus and Phil Mickelson, submitted design plans. Mickelson made the final five.

“Nicklaus fell off because he was just patting us on the head, ‘Sure, you

want to build an Open course,’ ” Ladenburg said. “Bobby had built 250 courses around the world. He believed it could be a U.S. Open course.”

Soon enough it was. Ladenburg and Jones lobbied United States Golf Association officials with calls and letters throughout the building process and encouraged site visits.

Chambers Bay opened in 2007.

Roughly seven months later, it was awarded the 2010 U.S. Amateur and the 2015 U.S. Open, unheard of for a new course.

“It shocked the golf world,” said Ladenburg, who carries a 7 handicap despite his late introduction to the game. “I told people after 5 1⁄2 years of hard work we’re an overnight success.”

The U.S. Open’s economic impact is expected to be $140 million, according to the USGA’s Reg Jones.

“There are going to be 80 million watching on TV and people are going to want to come here as tourists,” Ladenburg said. “It puts the state on an international map in a way that’s never happened in our lives.”

How you’ll get to Chambers Bay if attending More than 21,000 satellite parking spots will be available at two primary lots. Parking and shuttle service to the championship grounds are free. Nearly 300 shuttle buses will run continuously from 5:30 a.m. each day and continue for one hour following the conclusion of play.

Spectators traveling from points north and east of Chambers Bay, which is located in University Place, will be directed to the Red lot (Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup). The shuttle ride to the course is expected to be 30 minutes. Spectators traveling from points south and west of the course will be directed to the Blue lot (Fort Steilacoom State Park in Lakewood) for an expected shuttle ride of 25 minutes.

Spectators who are being dropped off will be directed to the passenger, taxi, limousine drop-off zone at Sunset Primary School. It’s a 10-minute walk to the course.

Lone fir survives Chambers Bay’s only tree vandalized in 2008

Chambers Bay has one tree that stands behind the 15th green and 16th tee box. It doesn’t come into play unless someone has hit a truly awful shot.

It did come into play in April, 2008, for a miscreant who hacked about three inches into the Douglass fir, roughly one-fifth of the tree’s diameter, in a vandalism binge that included damaging some signs on the course and leaving behind numerous empty beer cans.

The perpetrator wasn’t caught.

Workers fortified the iconic tree with a pair of metal straps and some protective

fencing and it has made a strong recovery. It has served as a backdrop for numerous wedding photos and can probably be found on thousands of phones in pictures snapped from the 15th tee box. The tree is prominent in the cover photo of “America’s St. Andrews,” a book about Chambers Bay. “They took a little wedge out of it,” general manager Matt Allen said. “We weren’t sure what the impact would be but it’s continued to survive.”

Course in great shape Mild winter temperatures, limited use aided outcome

Ask Chambers Bay director of agronomy Eric Johnson if the course will be brown, green or a mixture of both for the U.S. Open and he’ll defer to Mother Nature.

“Ask the weatherman,” he said. “I hope it’s dry, that way we can control if we want it green or not, but June can give us anything.”

So can November through May, for that matter. Johnson was thrilled with how Chambers Bay came through winter and early spring. Temperatures were mild, course officials put together a restricted-use plan and instituted numerous protective measures, including shutting down several green complexes.

Chambers Bay emerged in great shape.

“We had about three weeks total of freezing weather, which is abnormal,” Johnson said. “We had covers on every green for the first time just as an insurance policy and they’re not fun to move, especially when you have 20 of them. We tried to plan so we didn’t have to pull them up and put them down in 24 hours.”

Added Matt Allen, general manager at Chambers Bay for seven years: “Thanks to the plan, the reduced traffic and the cherry on top was the weather, our efforts in areas on the putting greens that needed special attention were rewarded. We’re not only in the best condition we’ve ever been at this point of the year, with the exception of two greens we’re in the best condition I’ve ever seen it period.”

Chambers Bay’s fine fescue grass is ideal for links golf because it’s a thinner blade and lacks tackiness, according to USGA executive director Mike Davis. When a ball lands on fescue it tends to skid and roll out, perfect for the firm-and-fast conditions typical of links golf.

Fine fescue also has environmental benefits. It requires less water, fertilizer and chemicals compared to more common grass varieties found on traditional courses.

“All that money that can be saved by not over-greening (links courses) hopefully can go to junior golf,” said Chambers Bay designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. Taking care of fine fescue can be a delicate proposition. The skinny blades are susceptible to damage from foot traffic, particularly when it goes dormant in colder weather. Fine fescue grows slowly so divots take longer to recover.

“We didn’t stop growing this winter,” said Johnson, who arrived at Chambers Bay in 2012 after working with fescue for nine years at Bandon Dunes. “When it’s cold the grass shuts down and is no longer growing and you throw a normal year of traffic on it that’s where you run into problems. This year was different because of the (winter maintenance) plan and the weather helping us out.”

June weather can be fickle in western Washington but officials expect to be able to adjust accordingly because Chambers Bay is built on sand and features excellent drainage.

Chambers Bay closed to the public May 26 to ensure the best possible conditions when pros arrive prior to U.S. Open. The tournament is June 18-21.

Sand and gravel pit adapted into landscape Much like the lone fir, several tall columns to the right of the 18th tee and fairway are an unmistakable sight from virtually anywhere on the Chambers Bay property.

Various companies mined the site for sand and gravel for decades until 2003 when plans moved forward with building Chambers Bay. According to the book “America’s St. Andrews,” the site was the single largest sand and gravel producer in the U.S. in 1992.

“They are remnants from the sorting bins,” general manager Matt Allen said.

Read told him the course was being built on sand.

“Anybody that knows anything about golf courses knows any course built on sand is always going to be better than courses not built on sand,” Davis said.

“That’s how all this started.”

The result of that phone call 10 years ago will be the playing of the 115th U.S. Open at scenic Chambers Bay on June 18-21. The U.S. Open is going where it has never gone before – the Pacific Northwest on a links-style course. The major championship’s typical tree-lined, tight fairways and ankle-deep rough will give way to Chambers Bay’s generous fairways that can shrink in size due to endless humps and bumps and knobs and knolls.

There’s one tree on the course and it doesn’t come into play. There’s no Bermuda grass here, just fine fescue, another U.S. Open first.

When Chambers Bay, now 8 years old, was awarded the national championship shortly after opening it became the first new course built since Hazeltine in 1967 to be selected. Recent sites Oakmont, Merion and Pinehurst have been in business for more than 110 years.

“This is a bold site, this is a big site, there’s a lot of scale to this site,” Davis said. “I’ve heard people say this is a wow site. We don’t have anything that we’ve played the U.S. Open on that is remotely similar to this, where you can be on parts of the property and see all 18 holes at once.”

It is the style of play – the ground game reminiscent of links courses in the British Open rotation, the 60-yard roll on drives and the approach shot that requires going to Point C to get from Point A to Point B – that will challenge the best players in the world and offer a new experience for fans in person and watching on television. Chambers Bay officials said they haven’t seen too many pros visit but they expect that to change in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

“It’s very similar to Whistling Straits, links course, very fast, some tee shots that are quite downhill, lots of slope, around the greens you really have to know the falloffs,” said defending champion Martin Kaymer, who won at remodeled Pinehurst No. 2 last year.

“It’ll be one of those tournaments, similar to Pinehurst, where you can putt or do those bumps-and-runs.”

It’s a new look for a U.S. Open, and that fact has prompted grousing from some pros.

“As far as the greens are concerned, it’s not a championship golf course,” Ryan Palmer told USA Today last month.

“Not with the way some of the greens are and the pin placements they can put out there.”

Palmer continued: “Tee to green the course is OK. It’s not bad. It’s a great piece of land, great scenery. Very fair off the tee. We played it soft. The greens were rolling 9s (on the Stimpmeter). If they get it rolling 10 and 12, it will be interesting.”

Tweeted Ian Polter: “Well several players have played Chambers Bay in prep for US Open. The reports back are its a complete farce. I guess someone has to win.”

Sports Illustrated’s Alan Shipnuck, responding on Twitter to reader queries, called Chambers Bay “one of the most visually spectacular courses on the planet.” He also noted: “It’s big boy golf, demanding power, precision, creativity and endless patience. I’m expecting an A-list leaderboard.”

Davis listens to players’ complaints every June. He pointed out that when Jack Nicklaus heard others griping about course conditions he told himself he didn’t have to worry about that player that week.

“This is a one-of-kind site for a U.S. Open and there are going to be players that just love the ground game, love the imagination and embrace it,” he said.

“There are others that just want predictability. They just want something right in front of them. They don’t want to guess what’s going to happen when the ball lands.

“It would not be a U.S. Open if we didn’t get some chirping. It’s just part of it. We joke internally if nobody’s complaining we’ve done something wrong.”

If players want to do something right at Chambers Bay, Davis offered advice: “There’s no way a player will have success unless he really studies the golf course and learns it. The idea of a player coming in and playing two practice rounds and having their caddy just walk it and just use the yardage book, that person is done.”

Not so fast, said world No. 1 ranked Rory McIlroy, after a 7-shot victory at the Wells Fargo Championship. His reply to Davis’ comments: “What’s Mike Davis’ handicap.”

Barnes a legend in his own time 1921 U.S. Open champ has ties to Northwest

Every so often, when general manager Josh Bridge zigzags out of his office, he will come face to face with ol’ Jim Barnes.

It isn’t the real Jim Barnes – the lanky 6-foot-4 Englishman has been dead nearly 50 years – but a jumbo-sized photo of him that hugs the back wall in the Tacoma Country and Golf Club’s clubhouse.

Because of the man’s hovering presence in golf history, Bridge has suggested that the adjoining restaurant be renamed the “Long Jim Barnes Bar.� “If you are a golf fan who knows any history,� Bridge said, “you should know his name.�

Many around here do not know who Barnes is, or what he accomplished.

Why? It is because when he was the club professional at Tacoma C&GC (1911-14), he was just starting to carve out a name for himself. It wasn’t until after he left and moved East that he won four major championships.

One of those wins was the 1921 United States Open golf championship held in Maryland. He remains as the lone man with Northwest ties to win the national open.

As popular a figure as he became, particulars about his tenures in Spokane, Vancouver, B.C., and Tacoma remain shrouded in mystery.

Oakland, Spokane-area capitalist F.T. McCullough heard about the golfer’s growing reputation, and sought him out as the Spokane Country Club’s first club professional.

It isn’t even known what year exactly Barnes made his way to Spokane. Most figure it was late in 1907 or early in 1908. Whenever it was, it coincided with the time that the club was moving to its current location.

Two things that are distinctly known: One, Barnes represented Spokane Country Club when he won the 1909 Northwest Open at Seattle Golf Club, and placed second at the same tournament a year later – at Tacoma C&GC. And secondly, when it came time to designing a new layout at Spokane Country Club, Barnes had a big say on at least the front nine holes, which opened in 1909. “He is the architect on record,� said USGA archives Les Blakley, the director of golf at Jim Barnes, who was sought and hired as club pro at the Spokane Spokane Country Club.

Barnes also began playing bigger tournaments across the country, including his cardinal entry in the U.S. Open in 1912, tying for 18th. A year later, he tied for fourth at the national open.

He also became a three-peat champion of the Northwest Open in 1913 at Butte Country Club in Montana.

“Tacoma was very proud of him,” Bridge said. “They wanted him to go out and play and win those tournaments. Every time he did that, it brought back notoriety to our club.”

Barnes’ name has been linked as at least an advisory voice to golf architectural projects around the Northwest – at Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club in Vancouver, B.C.; at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle, and the first municipal layout West of Chicago.

In February of 1914, Barnes announced he was leaving to take the head professional job at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club near Philadelphia.

A two-day farewell tournament for Barnes was held at Tacoma C&GC – which, of course, he won.

On March 19, Barnes boarded a train heading out of town. Five months later, he won the first of many major professional tournaments at the Western Open at Interlachen Country Club in Minnesota.

“It puts that thought in their mind and they have to pick a spot that’s a third of the width of what the shot would be like without it.”

Players who hit a wayward shot must descend a flight of stairs into the base of the narrow, 12-foot deep bunker, which is angled in such a way that it makes a shot directly to the green unlikely.

“I’ve been in it once,” Allen said. “You have to be in the right part of the bunker to be able to do that (reach the green). I opened up a 9-iron and got it out with enough left-to-right spin and a helping wind. It landed on the green but rolled off into the bunker.”

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve played Chambers Bay, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re familiar with the dramatic elevation changes. The par-3 ninth provides a perfect example.

The scenic hole originates from one of the highest points on the property and features a 100-foot drop from the upper tee boxes to a large, wavy green. It plays between 168 and 227 yards. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Like a parachute shot,â&#x20AC;? USGA executive director Mike Davis said.

At the USGAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s urging, another set of tee boxes was added late in 2013

at a lower location that actually makes the shot slightly uphill. The lower tee box, which ranges from 185 and 220 yards, comes from a different angle than the upper tees and brings new pin locations into play. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rather than play from the upper tees all the time and have holes mainly on the right half of the green, that tee shot gives you mostly back-hole locations and the backstop comes into play,â&#x20AC;? general manager Matt Allen said.

And, he had played casual golf matches with President Warren Harding as his partner.

But what he accomplished at Columbia Country Club in Maryland that week in August will forever be recalled as one of the commanding performances in U.S. Open history.

Barnes arrived the day before the qualifying round. Having never seen the layout, he shot a 1-under-par 69 to set the course record.

The next day, Barnes opened with another 69, and led the rest of the way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The greens had upset (the other golfers) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and the hot weather hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t helped their mental attitude, either,â&#x20AC;?

Barnes recalled years later to Golf Journal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I knew I was playing well â&#x20AC;&#x201C; well enough to play any course, I thought.â&#x20AC;?

After 36 holes, Barnes held a four-stroke advantage over two golfers â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one of which was close friend Fred McLeod. It grew to seven shots after three rounds. And after a final-round 72, he ended up winning by nine strokes over McLeod and American superstar Walter Hagen; 13 shots over Evans; 14 over budding star Bobby Jones; and 22 over Gene Sarazan, who later would win the career â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grand Slamâ&#x20AC;? of golf.

Some pros not happy with ‘ribbon tees’ You’ll probably see the phrase “ribbon tees” in print or hear it during the telecast of the U.S. Open. It refers to tee boxes and the surrounding area being cut at the same length so they essentially run together with little or no variance.

“They kind of meander and allow us to put tee markers where we want,” USGA executive director Mike Davis said.

You’ll probably hear about Davis’ plan to put tee markers on slight slopes, an unprecedented decision that has prompted squawking from some pros.

Davis stressed that it would only be “on slight slopes.”

“There may be domes where we may give the players a little downhill slope, a little uphill slope, a side slope,” he said.

“That’s interesting.”

He knows it could be greeted with negative reactions.

“I think it’s actually an innovative, neat idea,” Davis said. “Listen, we’re not going to be putting tee markers on a slope that’s 6, 8, 10 degrees. Generally speaking, architects build maybe a half degree slope for surface drainage. All of a sudden if (you tee off) a 2-3 degree slope you start to feel that. We won’t go overboard with it.”

Davis mentioned the idea to Tom Weiskopf and Greg Norman as they toured the course in April.

“Those two are major champions and architects,” Davis said. “They loved the idea.”

In some ways, Chambers Bay has ribbon greens in that it’s sometimes hard to determine if your ball is on or off the putting surface. Officials said that won’t be an issue during the U.S. Open because the greens will be more clearly defined.

Variables can change overnight at Chambers Bay Holes 1 and 18 can play as par-4s or par-5s any given day Symbolic of Chambers Bay’s flexibility, Nos. 1 and 18 will alternate as par 4s and par 5s. For example, if No. 1 is set up as a 496-yard par 4, the 18th will be played as a 604-yard par 5. The following day, No. 1 might be a 598-yard par 5 and No. 18 will measure 525 yards as a par 4.

That will keep par at 70 but offer an interesting change to the daily set-up. The course will be set from 7,200-7,600 yards, depending on weather, wind, hole locations, etc., another indicator of Chambers Bay’s versatility.

As for 1 and 18, “we weren’t trying to be cute,” USGA executive director Mike Davis said. “It all gets down to the architecture of the course. It gives you so much wonderful flexibility. You can

Former PGA Tour golfer and current Fox television broadcaster Greg Norman had good things to say about this year’s U.S. Open host course.

CHANGES IN THE BOOTH

Fox replaces NBC for U.S. Open airing Goodbye Dan Hicks, Johnny Miller and Roger Maltbie. Hello Joe Buck, Greg Norman and Juli Inkster.

Fox spent $1 billion for the rights to televise 12 years of USGA championships, including the U.S. Open. NBC had aired the national championship since 1995.

Fox will air 38 hours of U.S. Open coverage. The network is planning some innovative features, including the use of drone flyovers and robotic cameras.

Buck and Norman anchor Fox’s team, which includes Inkster, Brad Faxon, Holly Sonders, David Fay, Corey Pavin and Shane O’Donoghue. Fay is

the former USGA executive director.

O’Donoghue is the host of CNN’s Living Golf program and contributes to Golf.com.

Norman and Faxon played Chambers Bay last month. Afterward Norman advised U.S. Open competitors to get in shape. Chambers Bay’s elevation changes make it a challenging walk.

Tournament officials estimate rounds will take 10-12 minutes longer to complete than at previous Open venues.
