CELEBRATING 10 YEARS of Spoonflower It’s hard to believe now, but most people never considered the possibility of designing and printing their own fabric 10 years ago. At that time, not only was printing a custom design expensive (from $50 per yard for bulk orders up to $150 a yard for smaller orders), but many surface designers didn’t have a low-investment platform to distribute their art to shoppers. In short, most of us were buying the designs that stores offered us, because that was fast, affordable and easy. Our founders, Stephen Fraser and Gart Davis, had already

helped launch the technological wave of print-on-demand, selfpublished books in the early 2000s. And so, when Stephen’s wife

This functional and eco-friendly bag can go straight from the market to your fridge or pantry. It’ll help keep your apples or peppers corralled and can be tossed in the wash as needed. Materials you’ll need: 1 yard of Organic Sweet Pea Gauze™ per bag (project makes two bags!), 1 yard of rope per bag that is 1" wide or less, sewing machine and/or serger, ruler, scissors, pins, thread, fabric marker, wood toggle button and small safety pin

Project cost: Under $25 (for two bags) 1.

Prepare your materials. Serge or zigzag stitch around the outside edge of your fat quarter to secure the hem.

A | My Garden Sketchbook by pattyryboltdesigns, #D127

Fold the long side of your fat quarter ¼" toward the wrong side. Pin and sew in place. Next, fold the same side again so it’s in line with your 3" marks. Pin and sew in place to create a 1½" casing for your drawstring.

5.

Fold your fat quarter in half widthwise, right sides facing. Pin in place, carefully lining up the edges of the casing.

6.

Sew the bottom and side edges together with a ¼" seam allowance, stopping at the edge of your casing. Turn rightside out, and voilá, you have a bag!

Insert your drawstring. Attach a safety pin to one end of your drawstring material, and feed it through your casing. Feed both drawstring ends through the wood toggle button. Knot or fold and stitch the ends of your rope to finish.

Do you think of the color yellow as energizing

and warm? You’re not alone. While the study of color psychology is ever-evolving, there are many reports that describe yellow as a hue that can raise metabolisms and cheer moods. The timeless denim skirt gets a makeover with pops of pattern! Head to our blog for our free pattern and the full step-by-step photo guide of all three versions.

FEATURING: DOGWOOD DENIM $30/YD

HOW TO

Dogwood Denim™ Skirt Materials you’ll need: 1+ yards of Dogwood Denim (depending on which version you’re making), one 7-9 zipper, one button or clasp of your choice, sewing machine, serger (optional), thread Project cost: Under $35 - $95 (depending on skirt length) *All seams should be sewn at ⅝" unless otherwise instructed.

STEP 1: Trace your pattern pieces.

STEP 5: Pin the front pocket lining to the front skirt

1.

Trace your pattern pieces onto your fabric and cut so that you have two of each pattern piece except for the fly shield, of which you only need one. Finish the raw edges of your pattern pieces with a serger or zigzag stitch.

2.

Start assembling by sewing the yoke to the back skirt, matching the notches. Press seams up towards the yoke.

3.

Sew the two back pieces together along the center-back, being sure to match the yoke seams. Sew along the centerback from top to bottom. Press seams to one side.

4.

Assemble the pockets by attaching the wrong side of the front pocket backing pieces to the right sides of the front pocket lining pieces, matching up the circles. Topstitch the front pocket backing to the front pocket lining along the bottom and inner edges.

5.

Match the right sides of the front pocket lining to the front skirt at the curved edge and sew. Trim the seam allowance and clip along the curve.

6.

Turn the front pocket lining to the inside of the front skirt. Press the curved edge and topstitch through all layers just inside the edge. Then, topstitch again ½" from the curved edge.

7.

Fold the front pocket lining along the fold line and match the bottom curved edge. Sewing only the front pocket lining piece, sew the bottom curved edge.

8.

Baste stitch the waistline and along the side seam through all layers to keep everything in place.

9.

Prep the fly shield by folding the fly shield down the middle, wrong sides together, and stitching around all three raw edges.

Unfold the leg pieces, and place together with right sides facing. Note that the widest straight edge is the waistband. Pin the long sides from the waist to where the fabric makes a point, and sew with a zigzag stitch using a ½" seam allowance.

5.

Reshape the leggings so the seams you’ve just sewn are now in the center instead of on the sides. Pin the legs together around the inseam, and stitch together.

6.

Turn leggings right side out. Fold about ¼ – ½" of the waistband over, wrong sides facing and zigzag stitch around the top.

Fold over about 1" of fabric around the elastic, and stitch. Be careful not to catch the elastic as you go!

8.

Fold each fabric rectangle in half to match the shortest edges with right sides together, and pin. Zigzag stitch, making two little tubes. Fold each one over on itself lengthwise with wrong sides together, aligning the raw edges. Put them over the bottom of each pant leg with the right sides together, aligning all three raw edges.

9.

Zigzag stitch around raw edges, turn right side out and press.

MEET THE DESIGNER

Holli Zollinger

5 QUESTIONS FOR HOLLI

For many of us, it can be a challenge to mix and match patterns. One person who helps us do that effortlessly is surface pattern designer Holli Zollinger. In the Spoonflower Marketplace, she pairs perfectly coordinated colors and textured patterns into collections with names like Wildflower Study and Urban Tile. In fact, her eye for beautiful textile prints has catapulted her into the ranks of community favorites. You may have even spotted her designs at Target, but you’ll find her largest library of designs—over 2,120 and

When asked how she mixes patterns in her own home, Holli shared this secret with us: “If you start simply with one item that you really love and build slowly, adding or subtracting elements when you are able, mixing and matching can pay off.” She emphasizes that it’s important to keep some of the designs you use more neutral to help balance the dramatic elements, but that leaving your comfort zone can be fun and rewarding. “I appreciate showcasing one design (on a bedspread or duvet for example) as the most dominant design in the room, while building support

Spoonflower has connected me with many other people and resulted in fun and interesting collaborations. I do not have any formal training in art, but feel like communities like Spoonflower have pushed me to be better and to learn about things I didn't even know I was interested in, like surface pattern design.”

Jeremiah Witting of thecalvarium

HERTFORDSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM

There is the little tingle of excitement when you get a sale, but infinitely more rewarding is when you find out that the piece of fabric is going to be part of a daughter's wedding quilt in southern Siberia, or be included in a memory quilt for a farmer's family in Iowa. That is the heart and soul of Spoonflower.”

Spoonflower is a place where I can learn new ideas and see the latest trends and styles from the most interesting artists all over the world. The weekly contests are an important part of the community: these push me to explore new topics and find new methods of expression.”

I discovered Spoonflower in 2012 after reading an article in an Italian magazine. It was the start of a wonderful journey for me after a difficult period in my life. Immediately, I found anopportunity to express my creativity and share it with a global community.I also really appreciate Spoonflower's attention to the use of ecological inks and materials!”

Spoonflower has given me the resources to merge my passions for art and for textiles, which has allowed me to build the business I've always dreamed of!”

Being a part of the Spoonflower community has ignited my creative energy in more ways than I could have expected. I’m inspired every day by what other artists are creating, and the weekly challenges push me to design things that I might not have ever created. Some of my favorite designs have come about because of the weekly challenges, which is so cool!”

What Creative Community Means to Designers Around the World With every Spoonflower Marketplace purchase, you’re putting money into the pockets of independent artists worldwide.

Hiba K. of fleurpaperco PAKISTAN

It's so delightful working with a company like Spoonflower. Honestly, every time I open a new package of samples it's like the first time I ever saw my work on a product. The feeling never gets old.”

Rebel Challenger of mulberry_tree BRISBANE, QUEENSL AND, AUSTR ALIA

Before joining Spoonflower, I hadn’t drawn in many years. As an art director for newspapers, my work is fairly serious, so Spoonflower became a creative outlet for my crazy ideas. It has helped me become a better illustrator and introduced me to the amazing world of fabric design. All the talented artists on Spoonflower continue to inspire me every single day.”

occasional sightings of elk, deer, bald eagles, foxes, bears and songbirds from her workspace are a welcome distraction. “It would be safe to say that I don’t have to look far for inspiration in my clothing line,” she said. She started olive•me nine years ago at her home in Fernie, British Columbia (hence the beautiful mountain views), and her shop is now an online destination for unique, well-made apparel for children both locally and abroad. When she was a child, Marla loved everything to do with arts and crafts, from drawing and sewing to working with wood. As a young adult, she outfitted her first home with curtains, tables, bookcases and fences, constantly changing paint colours to customize her space. Another big life change fueled her next inventive burst: “After my first baby was born, the need to create hit with a force that consumed me,” she said. “I made everything for my daughter Gwen: quilts, blankets, clothing, room décor, toys, etc. It was the beginning of what would grow to be olive•me.” Stitching up super-soft baby leggings is one thing, but making apparel that reflects kids’ adventurous personalities is another. from. “Olive•me is exactly what it is today because of this ability to communicate with the people who create the designs,” Marla said. “Three and a half years ago I reached out to a designer at Spoonflower whose style I was drawn to; Esther of nouveau_bohemian has since become the leading force that shapes the artwork that defines olive•me. More than that, she is now a dear friend and mentor.”

From finding key creative partners to making time for her husband and kids, it’s about the balance between work and home life for this small business owner. “Nine years after stepping onto this path, my proudest accomplishment is the realization that I can do something I love and provide support to my family,” Marla noted. “I don’t think it gets any better than that.”

GOING GREEN

TRENDING  |  Sustainability

it's in our nature

A

Spoonflower strives to ensure that our fabrics are good for you and good for the earth. From our low-waste digital print process to organic fabric options and paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), we seek to provide products made safely and sustainably. The textile industry is rife with sustainability problems: from the use of toxic inks and wasteful practices for materials and water, to a race to utilize the cheapest materials such as vinyl—no matter the environmental impact. Spoonflower has worked hard to reverse this direction. We began with a holistic approach to reduce the use of materials, energy and water by choosing a pigment printing process instead of reactive dye; to minimize fabric waste by only printing what is needed, plus recycling any fabric waste by transforming it; and ethically sourcing materials from a small group of trusted vendors.

B

C

D

REDUCING WASTE Spoonflower’s print-on-demand process is designed to minimize fabric and ink waste. Since you have the ability to print the exact quantities you want, just the way you want them, there are no surplus materials. Marketplace fabric that is returned to the factory is donated (designers still earn their commissions!) to programs like the RARE Bear sew-in, a grassroots outreach initiative for kids with rare diseases, or local nonprofits such as The Scrap Exchange. Unprinted fabric remnants are available to local artists and makers in the Spoonflower community. Fabric that doesn’t meet our standards never makes it to the landfill, as it is shredded for industrial applications like car upholstery and furniture stuffing, bedding and flooring. KEEPING IT CLEAN Spoonflower’s pigment printing process consumes very little water to begin with, making it an eco-friendly solution in the textile printing industry. Our pigment inks meet the Oeko-Tex 100 requirements to be free of restricted chemicals. Our colors are mixed from 4-8 basic colors as your fabric is printed, so unlike screen printing, there’s no mixing of colors in advance. Our method also doesn’t require any wet post-processing, so there’s no water consumed during finishing. To ensure products are safe, we select premium fabrics, inks and dyes. All of our wallcoverings and gift wrap are printed with water-based latex inks that carry the GREENGUARD Gold certification. We avoid fabrics with any flame-retardant applications, and our fabrics pass tests ruling out harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde and lead.

E F

Sustainability  |  INSPIRE

SOURCING THE BEST To meet increasing demands for natural textiles, we developed three fabrics made from yarns that meet Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS): Organic Cotton Sateen Ultra, Organic Cotton Knit Ultra, and Organic Sweet Pea Gauze™. To add to the environmentally-friendly lineup, we offer an Eco Canvas made with 45% recycled content and a Smooth wallpaper made with up to 10% post-consumer waste. Our gift wrap is chlorine-free and has been certified by the FSC as a paper made with responsibly-sourced pulp. The factory that produces the paper is carbon-neutral and manufactured in a facility that runs on Green-e certified wind power energy credits. Our Smooth wallpaper is not only removable, but recyclable as well: in fact, Smooth wallpaper and Roostery's Isobar durable wallpaper are both eligible for LEED credits. Unlike most peel-and-stick wallpapers, our Woven wallpaper is completely free of vinyl. CONTINUING TO GROW Spoonflower invests in sustaining a healthy environment by working to reduce our ecological impact in everything we do, from recycling and composting in our office to printing packing slips on recycled-content paper. We have two factories—one in Durham, N.C. and one in Berlin, Germany—to reduce shipping transit to consumers, thus cutting our carbon footprint. Our office break rooms are full of handmade fabric dish towels, tablecloths and napkins, and we stock our shelves with reusable silverware and dishware. We have a small garden outside our North Carolina headquarters that is filled with herbs, lettuces and cherry tomatoes planted We are leading a revolution to (and enjoyed) by our modernize the centuries-old textile employees. Since 2015, printing industry with technology that consumes little to no water or heat, we've diverted over 4,124 minimizing our carbon footprint. pounds of waste from the landfill into compost. Additionally, we have avoided 536 pounds of methane which is the equivalent of 10,724 Our printing process uses pounds of CO2 or driving non-toxic inks and wastes the entire circumference of less fabric than traditional methods by only printing the Earth. Sustainability is what is ordered. at the heart of all that we do—you could say it’s in our nature to go green.

How to Throw an Earth-Friendly Party

To set the stage for an eco gathering, we turned to our friends at Cherry Blossom Events, who have an eye for throwing themed parties with a sustainable edge. Their team was inspired by Spoonflower designs that evoked nature in all its finery—from ocean waves and bold botanicals to playful tree prints.

HOW TO

7

CREATE A

Seamless REPEAT

1

FROM A DRAWING

1. Create your drawing. The key is not to let any of your artwork go off the page—keep it contained! 2. Cut your paper in half. Once you have your drawing how you’d like it, cut your paper in half lengthwise using an exacto knife or scissors. 3. Swap and tape. Switch the two pieces of paper without rotating them and tape together on the reverse side. 4. Cut your paper in half again. Using the same process, cut your paper down the middle widthwise.

2

5. Swap and tape. Switch these two pieces of paper without rotating them and tape them together on the reverse side. 6. Brainstorm. You will now see that you have bisected your art in both directions and there will be an empty area in the middle of your drawing. You'll need to fill in the blank space. 7. Keep designing. Use your pen or pencil to add to your design so there aren’t any gaps and the spacing of your artwork feels consistent. You can continue to add design elements throughout, just remember to stay off the edges. 8. Color your artwork. Use markers, pencils or crayons to color in elements of your pattern if you’d like. Leave the background white for best results. That's it! Scan your artwork into your computer as a JPG at 150 DPI or higher, and upload the file to Spoonflower as a basic repeat. You now have a seamless design that’s ready to turn into fabric, wallpaper or gift wrap!

Gifts

FOR HIM

A

HOW TO

SELECT MINKY OR FLEECE $27/YD

Loungewear Tutorial GREAT SEWING PROJECT FOR ANY LEVEL

Tired of getting him ties every year? We have your back!

Don’t let your loungewear get you down: custom-printed pants match comfort with your personal style. Follow along to learn how to make your own!

Celebrate the man of the hour by making thoughtful, handmade gifts that reflect his personality.

Materials you’ll need: 2 yards of Fleece or Minky fabric, a pair of your own pants, 1" wide elastic, scissors, thread, sewing machine and safety pin.

From cycling jerseys and shoe bags to cozy lounge pants, pick one-of-a-kind designs for a one-

B

of-a-kind guy.

Project Cost: Under $56 1.

Fold your 2 yards of fabric in half. Fold your pair of pants in half, leg over leg, and line up the outer leg seam of your pants on the fold.

2.

Trace the shape of your pants onto the fabric, adding extra seam allowance extending 1.5" on the side, 2" from the top of your pants, and 3" from your hem. Cut out two pieces in this fashion.

3.

Match up your two pant pieces and, with right sides together, sew along the top curved seams on either side. This will create your crotch seams.

4.

Keeping the right sides together, open up the pants and line up the inseams of each pant leg. Stitch entire curve of the inseam into place.

5.

To form the waistband, create a channel for the elastic at the top of the pants. With the wrong side facing you, fold over the top of the pants by 1 1/4", leaving room for your elastic. Stitch along the open edge to close the channel with a ⅜" seam allowance, leaving a 1" opening between the beginning and end of your stitch line. You’ll feed the elastic through this opening.

6.

Measure your waist, and cut a length of elastic to match that measurement. With a safety pin attached to one end of the elastic, feed the elastic through the waistband channel, taking care not to twist the elastic.

T IP: To keep both ends of elastic out of the channel opening, pin one elastic end to your fabric right outside of the channel and feed the elastic with the other end. 7.

Once your elastic is all the way through your channel, overlap the ends, and sew together with a small zigzag stitch.

8.

Tuck your elastic into the channel, and close the opening with your machine or by hand. Hem your pants to your desired length and flip right side out.

1.

Lay fabric wrong side up. Fold each selvage edge in to meet in the middle so you have two usable folded edges. Fold your tank in half, matching the folded edge of the tank to one folded edge of fabric.

2.

Trace around your tank with your fabric marker, leaving enough room for a ½" seam allowance. Repeat this step on the other folded edge of your Modern Jersey. Cut out the front and back pieces.

3.

Sew one shoulder seam together, then serge over the same shoulder seam. Serge the adjacent armhole and the entire raw edge of the neckline.

4.

Fold the serged edge of the neckline toward the unprinted side of the fabric, and then topstitch along the edge. Do the same with the armhole.

5.

You've now completed one side of the neck and armhole. Sew and serge the second shoulder seam, then repeat the process of serging, folding and topstitching to finish the second armhole.

6.

Pin one of the side seams in place, with the right sides of the fabric together. Sew that side, and then use your serger to finish the edges.

7.

Now you'll finish the hem before you finish the second side seam. Serge the bottom edge of your tank.

8.

Fold the serged edge toward the wrong side of the fabric about ½". Pin every few inches to keep in place and then topstitch to hem.

9.

Finally, sew and serge the second side seam. Enjoy your new tank top!
