Modern Quilting With Suzy Quilts

BRIGHT IDEA: Fabric Lampshades

One of the best parts about the "lazy days of summer" is getting ahead on some fall projects. In this edition, we’re excited to celebrate all things Halloween—one of our favorite holidays to customize with Spoonflower. From colorful bunting to fabric pumpkins to witch hats, there are so many ways to add some spookiness to your décor. We worked with some of our favorite designers in the Marketplace to create six incredibly fun cut-andsew kids’ costumes. I won’t spoil the surprise, but take it from me

We’re very excited to introduce you to the maker behind Suzy Quilts, who inspires today’s generation of quilters with her clean lines and fresh color palettes. She created a modern quilting pattern exclusively for the Spoonflower community called Twisted Ribbons. You can use our Fill-A-Yard® process to get the materials for this quilt or skip the piecing process altogether and make your own cheater quilt with the same tool. (These are such a sweet touch for nurseries.) If you’ve ever dreamed of transforming your art into a repeating design, you’re not alone. With the help of our new tutorial on how to use Photoshop® software to turn a simple piece of art into a surface pattern, you can follow our steps to start your fabric design journey at Spoonflower. Don’t have Photoshop? Head to our blog for more ways to transform your work. Every issue of this magazine is a joy to put together: we love the chance to show you designs, décor and DIYs that you won’t find anywhere else. I hope this season lets you slow down and create

DIY

SEW THIS PROJECT IN UNDER AN HOUR Materials you’ll need: 1 yard of Dogwood Denim, 3 1⁄2 yards of twill tape ribbon or cotton webbing (1 wide), sewing machine, scissors, thread, straight pins, safety pin, measuring tape, chalk or fabric marker, an iron and our free digital pattern

APRON DESIGN Hamburgers! by katerhees, #E326

1.

Iron your fabric print side down. Fold one edge of your fabric in to the center of the yard. Line up your apron body piece along the fold, and cut around it. Cut out two pocket pieces from the remainder of your yard.

2.

Press and fold the top 1⁄4 edge of the apron toward the wrong side, then press and fold another ½. Pin and topstitch. Repeat with the sides and bottom edge.

3.

To create the casing for your apron ties, press sides inward toward the wrong side of the fabric about ¼, and stitch along the edge to secure.

4.

Fold the diagonal edges over again about 2 ¼, press and pin in place. Stitch along the edges with ¼ seam.

5.

Assemble the pocket by pinning the two pocket pieces together, right sides facing. Sew the edges with a ½ seam, leaving a small opening along the top. Turn the pocket right side out; pin and sew the top edge to close.

6.

Pin the pocket piece to the apron in line with the base of the casing. Sew around the sides and bottom of the pocket to secure it to your apron, being careful not to catch the casing in your stitches.

Kid’s Reusable Lunch Bag Lunch bags have certainly come a long way from boring (and wasteful) paper or plastic. Your kid won’t want to rush out the door without this custom-made bag! Materials you’ll need: ½ yard of Eco Canvas, 1 yard of ½" bias tape in coordinating color or print, 1 yard of ⅝" wide Velcro, rotary cutter or fabric scissors, thread, sewing machine

3.

Pin the other side of the Velcro strip 1 ½" from the bottom of the fabric rectangle, with the textured side facing up. Stitch around all four sides of the Velcro strip to the fabric.

*All seams should be sewn at ¼" unless otherwise instructed.

4.

Before you start to assemble the lunch bag, finish the edges with French seams.

Project cost: Under $20 each 1.

Cut out a rectangle measuring 12" x 30" from your fabric.

2.

Cut one strip of Velcro 5" in length. With the ride side facing you, orient your fabric so the shorter edges are at the top and bottom of the rectangle. With the textured side facing up, pin one side of the Velcro strip 1 ½" from the top edge of your fabric rectangle. Stitch all four sides of the Velcro strip to the fabric.

Color Crush: Lagoon  |  TRENDING

Lagoon LO V E

When summer's heat is at its prime, refresh your home with colors as cool as a dip in the sea. That’s why we’re crowning Lagoon as the queen of serene bliss. With its deep teal, ocean-inspired hue, it evokes equal parts escape, romance and intrigue. This jewel of a tone easily transitions from season to season. Pair it with bright pinks and yellows for an expansive summer vibe, and swap in warm ambers and wood tones for a cozy fall tableau. From accent pillows for a Mediterranean flair to a mid-century modern room outfitted with blue-green wallpaper, this hue will capture your imagination.

With a community of people who use Spoonflower in such creative ways, I’m always getting new ideas from what others have shared. I’ve seen dressers, shelves, bedside tables and more that were re-covered in fun wallpaper prints. This was the perfect inspiration for me to give an unused bookcase a second life. First stop: Spoonflower. A beautiful wallpaper design in our Marketplace caught my eye with its distressed, faux-metallic look. Since I was applying the wallpaper to a wood surface, I chose Woven wallpaper as its peel-and-stick application won’t affect the integrity of the wood. Spoonflower sells wallpaper by the foot, so I saved money by ordering two custom-length rolls to fit the back of the bookcase.

At Spoonflower, there are no minimums required. See below for special pricing and offers.

10% off orders of 20 to 49 yards of fabric

Whether you use an old bookcase at home or pick one up from a tag sale, this refresh is guaranteed to help you see your reading nook in a new light! Follow along as Allison Sloan Polish takes you through the DIY.

Before

To start, I lightly sanded the worn bookcase and wiped it clean to remove any dust. I chose a quart of premium latex paint so I could skip using a primer. After three coats of teal paint, the exterior, interior sides and shelves of the bookcase had the perfect coverage. I avoided painting the inside back where I planned to add the peel-and-stick wallpaper. This was important, as it allowed me to skip the recommended waiting period before applying Woven wallpaper to fresh paint (and saved on the paint cost and time). Once the paint dried, I peeled a couple inches of wallpaper backing from the first roll and matched the wallpaper with the inside back left corner of the bookcase, continuing to smooth the material as I peeled the backing. With 6" of exposed wood remaining on the right side of the interior, I measured and precut the second roll of wallpaper 8" wide so it would be easier to maneuver inside the bookcase. Once the wallpaper was positioned, I used a sharp utility knife to trim the excess on the sides and bottom. Because I had a lot of wallpaper left over from the second roll, I used the extra as drawer liners elsewhere in my house. Well-placed knick-knacks and novels completed the look and added an element of drama. Arranging items onto the shelves was a fun way to revisit things I’ve collected over the years. I think the wood birds I got in Paris have never found a more perfect place to roost.

Total Reno Cost: $110 Including wallpaper & paint

Finish the raw edges on the front, back, bottom and side panels with a sewing machine or serger, as well as the raw edges of the two short sides and one long raw edge of your facing strip.

Spoonflower Handbook | $24.75

FROM A DRAWING IN ADOBE ® PHOTOSHOP ®

Step-by-step user’s manual for both new and experienced designers and makers.

Note: This tutorial is best suited for artwork on white paper. 1. Scan your artwork at 300 DPI and open it in Photoshop. Use Replace Color, to make sure the background of the image is pure white. Click Image > Adjustments > Replace Color, make sure “Preview” is checked, and set the “Fuzziness” to 25. Next click on the background of the image; that hue will appear in the box labeled “Color”. Drag the “Lightness” slider all the way to the right—the “Result” box will turn white. You should see your image background turn bright white as well. Click “OK”.

Step 3

1. Click on ‟Designˮ in the navigation bar and then select

5. Make a duplicate of your first layer by clicking Layer > Duplicate Layer and click “OK” (command+J). Select your new layer and choose Filter > Other > Offset from the menu.

From professional designers to hobbyists, the Spoonflower Marketplace is for anyone who wants to make money selling their art. You earn 10% of every sale, every day, and up to 15% total if you are a power seller. Enjoy payouts every two weeks with as little as $10 in earnings. The best part? You always keep the rights to your work.

4 STEPS FOR UPLOADING

TIP: To resize your element, use the Transform tool under Edit > Transform > Scale (command+T). Hold "Shift" while clicking and dragging from the corners, and press “Enter” to confirm the new size.

That's it! When you’re happy with your repeat, save out an image as a JPEG or PNG under File > Save As and upload to Spoonflower.

Order an 8" x 8" swatch of printed Basic Cotton Ultra with 171 color chips and their hex codes to get an idea of our color rendering.

Designer Commissions

4. Go back to your first canvas and click on one of your element layers. Make a selection of that layer under menu Select > All (command+A) and "Copy" it. Then "Paste" the element into your new canvas. Resize (if needed) and place it in the center.

7. Your element should now repeat in each corner of your canvas with your first element still in the center. Now simply fill any empty space on your canvas with additional design elements (should you choose), being careful not to touch the edges of your canvas with any of the other elements.

Color Guide | $5

Get a feel for all of our fabrics and papers with our competitively priced sample pack to pick the right choice for your project. We print the same color grid onto each sample for easy comparison.

2. Focusing on one element at a time, use the Lasso tool (in the side toolbar) to trace around your element as close as possible. “Copy” (command+C) and “Paste” (command+V) your selection; this will put it on a new layer. Repeat this process with any remaining elements.

6. In the offset tool, enter the center point of your canvas (see Step 3) in the “Horizontal” and “Vertical” boxes. Click “OK”.

Many designers and makers find this map, featuring 1,400 color chips and their hex codes, to be an incredibly useful tool for predicting how our inks will print on a full yard of a specific fabric. (Shown here on Silky Faille)

Sample Pack | $3

TIP: To adjust the colors of your image further use Image > Adjustments > Hue & Saturation and edit as needed.

3. Set up a new canvas to create your repeat by going to File > New. Any dimension will work (but a square is easiest). Set the Resolution "DPI" to 150, Color Mode to RGB and click "Create." Be sure to remember the measurements for the center point of your design as you'll need it later. For example, if your canvas is a 1200px square the center point would be 600px.

Color Map | Starting at $17.50

Step 1

‟Uploadˮ. 2. Select your file. We recommend uploading a JPG or PNG file at 150 DPI (dots per inch). All files should be under 40 MB in size.

Step 5

3. Confirm that you own rights to the design. We respect the rights of artists and so should you. You retain the sole copyright for all original artworks that you upload.

To see more tips and photos on how to make a repeat, visit Spoonflower.com/photoshoprepeat

4. Upload. Ta-da! See? We told you it was easy. Now the fun begins…

From here, you can play with repeat options. Choose to center your design or create a basic, half-drop, half-brick or mirror repeat. Add a title, tags, keywords and description to your design. Completing this important information about your design will ensure that other users and potential customers can find your design in the Spoonflower Marketplace and Google search. Sell your design. Proof your work by ordering a swatch of your design on fabric (for just $5). Ensure that the colors and quality are what you expected. If you need to do some more tweaking, you can go back to your design and make all the necessary changes. If youʼre pleased, you can make it available for sale.

HOW TO

Cuteness Overload

Baby Hat QUICK SEWING PROJECT FOR ANY LEVEL I

I

They’re cute, they’re easy, they’re inexpensive. What’s not to love about handmade baby hats? You can stitch-up at least two hats from one fat quarter of our knit fabrics, so you can have some on hand for friends or family. Head to our blog to get our free hat pattern.

B

C

D

Materials you’ll need: 1 fat quarter of knit fabric (our Organic Cotton Knit Ultra or Modern Jersey work great), matching thread, sewing machine, measuring tape, needle and thread Project cost: Under $15 (for two hats) 1.

Download your free pattern from Spoonflower.com

2.

Trace the pattern onto your fat quarter of fabric and cut out the pieces.

3.

Pin the two pieces of the fabric together with right sides facing. Set your machine to a loose zigzag stitch (length 3", width 1.5") and use a ballpoint needle.

4.

Sew the pattern pieces together along the rounded edge, leaving the bottom opening unsewn.

FEATURING: ORGANIC COTTON KNIT ULTRA $27/YD

TIP: Sew with the presser foot against the raw edges of the fabric to guide you around the curve of the hat and to give you a small ¼" seam allowance. 5.

Turn up the bottom opening of the hat 2" to the wrong side and press with an iron. Sew the turned up fabric all the way around the hat, about ¾" away from the raw edge.

6.

Turn the hat right side out, and gently press the seams. Fold up the bottom edge about 1" to the right side to create a neat band around the opening of the hat.

7.

Hand sew a small tack in the turned up fabric along the side seams to secure.

Braided Fleece Blanket Materials you’ll need: 2 yards of Fleece, scissors or rotary cutter, washable fabric pen or chalk, ruler and self-healing cutting mat

3.

Project cost: $54 1.

Cut out two rectangles measuring 36" x 46" from your main fabric. Lay one rectangle over the other with wrong sides facing and all edges aligned.

2.

Cut a 2" square off of each corner of the blanket through both layers of Fleece.

60

Happiness Guarantee: When you love it, we love it!

4.

With both rectangles of Fleece still layered together, cut strips around all four sides of the blanket that measure 2" in height and 1" in width. Use a washable fabric pen and ruler or self-healing cutting mat to properly measure the height and width of your strips. Once strips are cut, fold each strip in half lengthwise (keeping both layers together), and make a small incision at the center of the folded bottom on the fringe about ¼-½" in length. Unfold. You will have a small, vertical hole centered in each strip.

5.

6.

7.

Beginning at one corner of the blanket with two pairs of Fleece strips, feed them to the left through the holes of the right pair of strips. Make sure you keep the two layers of Fleece together as you feed the strips through the holes. Continue in this manner, feeding the strips to the left through the holes to the right all the way around the blanket, until you reach the beginning corner of the blanket. Take the last fringe strip feeding and separate the layers of Fleece. Feed one layer through the starting hole (to the left) then use both layers of Fleece to tie a knot. Tuck the knot into the braided edge of the blanket to finish. = Top 10 Design in a Design Challenge
