A Time to Refresh

THROW DE SIGN

This time of year, I feel like I’m just waiting for spring to come. Even though North Carolina has mild winters, my family seems to have “cabin fever” right about now, and I’ve got an itch to refresh some of our home décor.

from our lineup of fabric, wallpaper or gift wrap

Buff alo Stampede by nouveau_bohemian, #C492

to be custom printed to your specs—no minimums

One of my favorite things is to reimagine an old piece into something new. Check out my bookcase renovation (p. 6) to see what a fresh coat of paint and Woven Wallpaper can do to liven up a boring classic. From there, you’ll discover even more ways to update your home, from revamping your teen’s bedroom to adding beautiful table linens to getting a nursery ready. You’ll find inspiration for beyond the home as well. Hoping to plan an unforgettable kid’s birthday party or create a one-of-a-kind dress for your niece? Customize around their individual personalities with our extensive design Marketplace.

AS SEEN IN:

This issue has got you covered for DIY projects, including how to make a kid’s T-shirt (p. 21) and one of our perennial favorites—turning handwritten recipes into heirloom tea towels (p. 38). There’s also plenty in here for the non-sewist with our sister brands, Roostery and Sprout Patterns. Look for callouts throughout to get our same great designs on finished goods. Since this month heralds the Year of the Dog in the Chinese zodiac, we couldn’t leave out some pupthemed projects. You’ll get to know a maker from Virginia who turns fabric into fun accessories for pooches. Plus hear from some designers in our worldwide community, including Michael Uhlenkott, who has created an astonishing 1,800 designs, on what powers their artistic expression. As one more treat, we welcome Dogwood Denim™ to our lineup. It took us months to find a denim that we love, and this durable fabric is sure to be a new favorite. I hope you find some inspiration here to refresh your living spaces and reinvigorate your lifestyle just in time for spring. Happy creating,

FEATURING OUR: WOVEN WALLPAPER $7.50/FT

A BOOKCASE RENOVATION How Spoonf lower’s president used wallpaper to make a one-of-a-kind showstopper

application won’t affect the integrity of the wood. Spoonflower sells wallpaper by the foot, so I saved money by ordering two custom-length rolls to fit the back of the bookcase.

To start, I lightly sanded the worn bookcase and wiped it clean to remove any dust. I chose a quart of premium latex paint so I could skip using a primer. After three coats of teal paint, the exterior, interior sides and shelves of the bookcase had the perfect coverage. I avoided painting the inside back where I planned to add the peel and stick wallpaper. This was important, as it allowed me to skip the recommended waiting period before applying Woven Wallpaper to fresh paint (and saved on the paint cost and time).

trim the excess on the sides and bottom. Because I had a lot of wallpaper left over from the second roll, I used the extra as drawer liners elsewhere in my house.

With a community of people who use Spoonflower in such creative ways, I’m always getting new ideas from what others have shared. I’ve seen dressers, shelves, bedside tables and more that were re-covered in fun wallpaper prints. This was the perfect inspiration for me to give an unused bookcase a second life.

First stop: Spoonflower. A beautiful wallpaper design in our Marketplace caught my eye with its distressed, fauxmetallic look. Since I was applying the wallpaper to a wood surface, I chose Woven Wallpaper as its peel and stick

wood remaining on the right side of the interior, I measured and precut the second roll of wallpaper 8" wide so it would be easier to maneuver inside the bookcase. Once the wallpaper was positioned, I used a sharp utility knife to

Once the paint dried, I peeled a couple inches of wallpaper backing from the first roll and matched the wallpaper with the inside back left corner of the bookcase, continuing to smooth the material as I peeled the backing. With 6" of exposed

Well-placed knick-knacks and novels completed the look and added an element of drama. Arranging items onto the shelves was a fun way to revisit things I’ve collected over the years. I think the wood birds I got in Paris have never found a more perfect place to roost.

Feeling the winter blues? The last cold days of February can make anyone stir-crazy. Instead of staring at the same old furniture, cheer up your space with this easy weekend project. Whether you use an old bookcase at home or pick one up from a tag sale, this refresh is guaranteed to help you see your reading nook in a new light! Follow along as Allison Sloan Polish takes you through the DIY.

I felt the need to master a hobby while pregnant with my second child. Formerly a Spanish teacher, I quit work so I could stay home with my little ones and enjoy those precious few years. Yet I soon found myself restless and longed for something to challenge my mind and creativity. I decided to make a quilt, and my hobby blossomed from there. I sewed everything I could get my hands on, and as a dog mom of five, a handmade dog collar was on my to-do list. The rest is history.

I wish someone had told me to be prepared to live and breathe it. Working from home, owning a small business is something you cannot walk away from— it is here 24/7. As much as I desire a break sometimes and attempt to rest and have a lazy day, I find myself working. It is extremely hard to disconnect myself from my job. It is especially hard because for the most part, my work doesn’t feel like work. What has been a critical resource to you as a business owner?

My most important resource is social media. I am not a trendy person, so how I figure out that pineapples and cacti designs are popular is beyond me. I must pass the credit to social media!

D

Materials you’ll need: 1 yard of Organic Cotton Knit Ultra, fabric scissors, sewing machine, measuring tape, fabric pen and free digital pattern.

C

1.

Cut the pattern pieces for your preferred size. Fold your yard of fabric in half, matching up the two selvedge edges. Trace the front and back shirt pieces on the fold and cut them out. Cut out two sleeves and one neckband from the rest of the fabric.

2.

Pin the shirt front and shirt back pieces at the shoulder seams with right sides facing. Since we’re sewing with a knit fabric, you’ll want to use a zigzag stitch throughout. Sew the shoulder seams together using a ⅝" seam allowance.

3.

Prepare the sleeves. Fold the flat edge of the sleeve in about ¼" and again another ¼", and stitch to hem. Repeat for the other sleeve.

4.

Match the top center of the sleeve curve to the seam at the shoulder. Pin the sleeves to the shirt armholes with right sides facing. Stitch together using ¼" seam allowance. The bottom of the sleeve will still be open at this point.

5.

Sew the side seams by pinning the shirt front and back pieces together with right sides facing all the way up through the sleeve openings. Sew from the sleeve opening to the bottom of the shirt at ⅝" seam allowance.

6.

Prepare the neckband by folding the fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together. Sew the short ends together with a ⅝" seam allowance. Then fold it widthwise with wrong sides facing.

7.

To ensure your neckband lays flat, divide it into four even sections. Do the same with your T-shirt by finding the center of the front, center of the back, and shoulder seams. Pin the neckband and shirt body together, matching the four points, with right sides facing. Sew the neckband to the right side of the fabric by starting in the center back and slightly stretching the neckband to fit into the T-shirt. There should a perfect amount of stretch in between each pin.

MEET THE DESIGNER

From Surfing to Surface Design with Michael Uhlenkott

7 QUESTIONS FOR MICHAEL

What’s the first thing you do in the morning? “An early morning swim workout or a surf, followed by breakfast. Then to work designing or composing music.

Michael Uhlenkott is a man who knows tiki culture. He researches

reading plenty of books for inspiration along the way. “Besides

it, studies it—even lives it. The basement of his house was featured

also a prolific designer, infusing his passion for the tropical Pacific into his Spoonflower design shop where he's known as Muhlenkott.

There’s plenty of wonder to be found in Michael’s Spoonflower shop: He translates the ideas he uncovers into an inspired take on the exoticism of yesteryear through his hand-drawn textiles. With over 1,800 designs in his collection to explore, you can travel across space and time without leaving the comforts of your home.

I am definitely a morning person!” When did you fall in love with design? “I was a kid, enchanted by the patterns I saw on clothing in Renaissance paintings, friezes on Roman temples, Islamic miniatures and Victorian wallpapers. I studied and copied those and other historical examples of decorative art until I understood the ways the artists created a canon of motifs and styles. My art continues to be shaped by these models.”

B

Finish this sentence: I’d love to see one of my designs turned into...

“A pake muu [a 1940-50's-style Hawaiian dress] or a

“When creating a new design I typically first sketch an idea in pencil. From there I might finish it in ink, marker or paint or I will scan and draw it in Adobe Illustrator. Sometimes I carve a linoleum block. I always polish each design in Photoshop, adjusting scale, repeat and color before saving it for upload to my Spoonflower library.”

years and is now a popular destination for local tiki folk.” Michael joined the Spoonflower community in October 2009, when a designer friend told him about a place where you could upload your own designs and have them printed on various surfaces such as fabric and wallpaper. “It was a dream come true!” he exclaimed. As a designer, he’s a dedicated student of history, traveling the world and visiting museums for historical and ethnic research,

For someone getting started with designing their own fabric, what would you tell them? “I would advise new designers to talk about the craft with more experienced designers—most will be happy to share their insights, I imagine. Study the incredible treasury of designs of the past, but make them your own or use them as a jumping-off place. And even if you don’t imitate, the knowledge to be gained from the past is inestimable.” What’s the best advice you ever received? “Keep drawing by hand and imitate masters.”

For details on this tutorial and more,

HOW TO

MADE-TO-ORDER-GIFTS

Design a Recipe Tea Towel

visit spoonflower.com/recipe

Handwritten Recipe Tea Towels

PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS All you need to get started is a handwritten recipe and a Spoonflower account. 1.

2.

Scan the recipe or photo you’re using onto your computer. It’s best to do this at a high resolution, such as ‘best’, ‘high’, or ‘photo’ resolution. If it has an option for DPI (dots per inch), choose a number that is 600+. Start big: You can always make it smaller later if you need to.

towel? A completely customized gift for your sister,

Scroll to the bottom of the page to the Other Design Options section and select Linen Fat Quarter. That will open our integration with PicMonkey, an image editing and design site, and create an 27” x 18” fat quarter size canvas, perfectly sized for our tea towel. When the program opens it will prompt you to choose your image setting. Select King Kong for the best clarity.

4.

Now you’re ready to create! If you want to add a background color for your tea towel, click the Canvas Color button on the sidebar to select a color that will act as a border around the edges of your tea towel.

5.

Click the Overlays button, and then select Add Your Own at the top of the page to add your image. Find your file, and place it where you want it. You may want to rotate your file to best fill the rectangle of space. You can also adjust your design to fill more of the canvas, however if the design appears pixelated, reduce the size until it’s sharp and crisp.

mom or grandpa. Trust us, this easy project is a winning recipe.

TIP: Using the plus icon in the lower middle of the program, zoom to 100% to check your image quality at its final print size. If you can’t enlarge your image to the size you want without fuzzy quality, you’ll want to scan your image onto your computer at a higher resolution.

STEP 4: Create your design

FINISH: Hem your tea towel

6.

If you want to add text or other elements, click the Text button, which appears on the sidebar as Tt.

7.

Once your design is final, click the Export button at the top of the page. It may take a moment—don’t worry! The program will return you to your Spoonflower account with your new artwork. If you want just one tea towel, select Linen Cotton Canvas Ultra and Fat Quarter from the menu options. If you’d like four of the same tea towels (which make great gifts for family!), order a yard of Linen Cotton Canvas Ultra. Once you receive your tea towel, just finish the edges with a hem, and you’re all done creating a special keepsake of your favorite family recipe!

Cut out two 10 x 7 rectangles from each of your fat quarters (four rectangles total). Two will be used as the outer fabric and two for the lining.

2.

To install your zipper, place one of the outer fabric pieces right side up. With the zipper upside down, align it with the top raw edge of the fabric.

3.

Place one of your lining pieces wrong side down on top of the zipper, sandwiching the zipper in between. Stitch the zipper into place with a ¼ seam allowance. TIP: Unzip your zipper halfway before stitching into place. When you reach the zipper pull, lift your machine’s foot (with the needle down) and move the pull to a different area, so that it doesn’t interfere with your sewing.

4.

STEP 6: Leave a 3 gap in your lining

DESIGN CHALLENGE

Repeat the two steps above with your remaining pouch pieces to attach the other side of your zipper. Unzip the zipper halfway.

On either side of the zipper, refold the pieces to match the outer fabrics together and the lining fabrics together so that the right sides of each are facing. Pin all the way around your rectangle, taking care to match your outer fabrics at the open ends of the zipper, and leaving a 3 gap at the bottom of your lining fabrics for turning.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

DESIGN CHALLENGE

TIP: Fold the zipper teeth toward the lining as you pin. This is the key to not having a pinched-looking zipper.

STEP 9: Edgestitch the lining closed

DESIGN CHALLENGE

7.

Stitch the edge of your pouch with a ½ seam allowance, beginning at the bottom of your lining fabrics and working your way around.

8.

Trim excess fabric at the corners, and turn the pouch right side out through the opening in your lining. Gently push out the pouch corners for a clean finish.

9.

Pin the gap in your lining fabrics closed by tucking the raw edges neatly toward the wrong side of the pouch. Edgestitch into place. Tuck your lining into your outer fabric, and press to finish.

Last year, we were delighted to partner with our friends at Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort for a once-in-a-lifetime design challenge opportunity. Dating back to 1954, Hilton Hawaiian Village has played host to many celebrities, heads of state and presidents. So how did they get connected with Spoonflower? “We were looking for fabric designs that were unique to the Hilton Hawaiian Village to create an aloha shirt for our new gift shop,” said Lora Gallagher, regional director of marketing at Hilton Hawaii. “I had been designing and participating in weekly challenges at Spoonflower since 2013, and I realized that it would be the perfect tie-in.” Over four weeks, designers created patterns based on specially curated themes such as Blue Hawaii and MidCentury Modern. From hundreds of entries each week, the finalists were narrowed down by popular community vote, and the winners were handpicked by our collaborators at Hilton Hawaiian Village. Not only did the four winning designers earn commission on the fabric used in this line of apparel, they also

HOW TO

5

6

7

8

CREATE A

Seamless REPEAT

1

FROM A DRAWING

1. Create your drawing. The key is not to let any of your artwork go off the page—keep it contained! 2. Cut your paper in half. Once you have your drawing how you’d like it, cut your paper in half lengthwise using an exacto knife or scissors. 3. Swap and tape. Switch the two pieces of paper without rotating them and tape together on the reverse side. 4. Cut your paper in half again. Using the same process, cut your paper down the middle widthwise.

2

5. Swap and tape. Switch these two pieces of paper without rotating them and tape them together on the reverse side. 6. Brainstorm. You will now see that you have bisected your art in both directions and there will be an empty area in the middle of your drawing. You'll need to fill in the blank space. 7. Keep designing. Use your pen or pencil to add to your design so there aren’t any gaps and the spacing of your artwork feels consistent. You can continue to add design elements throughout, just remember to stay off the edges. 8. Color your artwork. Use markers, pencils or crayons to color in elements of your pattern if you’d like. Leave the background white for best results. That's it! Scan your artwork into your computer as a JPG at 150 DPI or higher, and upload the file to Spoonflower as a basic repeat. You now have a seamless design that’s ready to turn into fabric, wallpaper or gift wrap!
