About a year and a half ago, I moved my family of five into a new home. It needed some work and I saw it as a blank slate to not only create the perfect environment for my growing family, but to have it feel like an expression of who we are, what we love and how we live. Tips for Designing ON SPOONFLOWER
From kids' art & photos, to watercolor & sketches, it all belongs at Spoonflower. Image Size When creating your design, you will need a minimum of 150 pixels for every inch of your final print dimension. For example, if you'd like an image to print at 4" by 4", you'll want to prepare your file so that it measures at least 600 by 600 pixels, since 4 x 150 pixels = 600. You can use this formula to size any image— just multiply the print width and height in inches by 150 pixels.
Every design you see on Spoonflower is made by someone like you. From professional designers to hobbyists and beginners, the Spoonflower Marketplace is for everyone—and you always keep the rights to your work.

When you upload a design, it's converted to 150 dpi (dots per inch), which can cause some unexpected changes in scale if your image is not already at 150 dpi. You can use the “Smaller” or “Bigger” buttons on the design page or enter a specific dpi by clicking on the “Change DPIˮ link. Once you make an adjustment, don't forget to click “Save this Layout” to make the change stick.
1. Click on ‟Designˮ in the navigation bar and then select ‟Uploadˮ.

2. Select your file. We recommend uploading a JPG or PNG file at 150 dpi (dots per inch). All files should be under 40 MB in size. We also accept TIF and GIF formats.
Keep in mind that the preview window is the best way to predict how your design will print. The rulers along the edge of the preview window are also a great way to estimate the scale of a print. For example, if you notice that your design is cut off in the preview, it will be cut off on your fabric. Additionally, each fabric prints at a specific width, so be sure to check that your design is not wider than the fabric you're ordering.
3. Confirm that you own rights to the design. We respect the rights of artists and so should you. You retain the sole copyright for all original artworks that you upload. 4. Upload. Ta-da! See? We told you it was easy. Now the fun begins…
Repeat Options Once you upload your design to Spoonflower, you can choose to either center it or use our software to create a repeat. A basic repeat just creates tiles of your design straight up and down, while a half-drop or half-brick repeat staggers the tiles vertically or horizontally. The mirror repeat mirrors the design both vertically and horizontally.
From here, you can play with repeat options. Choose to center your design, or create a basic, half-drop, half-brick, or mirror repeat. Add a title, tags, keywords, and description to your design. Completing this important information about your design will ensure that other users and potential customers can find your design in the Spoonflower Marketplace and Google search.
If you're having a hard time picturing what these look like, don't worry—the preview allows you to toggle back and forth between the layout options in real time. Click “Save this Layout” to save your selections.
Sell your design. Proof your work by ordering a swatch of your design on fabric (swatches cost just $5). Ensure that the colors and quality are what you expected. If you need to do some more tweaking, you can go back to your design and make all the necessary changes. If you're pleased, you can make it available for sale.

Materials you’ll need: a sewing machine, a pillow form/insert, fabric (see page 30 for what we recommend), matching thread, scissors, a zipper, an iron and measuring tape. Pinking shears and a seam ripper are optional. 1.
Begin by measuring the width of your pillow and add ⅜" on all four sides for the seam allowance. If the fabric has a design on it, plan how you’d like it to show on the pillow and cut accordingly.

TIP: Use pinking shears to keep the edges clean and fray-free. 2.
Place the printed sides of the pillow fabric together facing each other and sew a basting stitch along the bottom edge of the fabric using a ⅜" guide on your sewing machine. This will hold the fabric in place until the final stitches are sewn.
3.
Measure and mark where the zipper will begin on both sides of the opening. Set the stitch length to 2.5" and sew a stitch on both sides of the zipper opening. Use a reverse stitch to secure it. You will do this on both sides of the zipper opening.
4.
Open the fabric and place it face down on an ironing board. Iron the seam open to prep for sewing on the zipper. Place the zipper face down onto the seam and pin it into place.

Attach the zipper foot to the sewing machine and start on the left, sewing all edges.

TIP: Back stitch both ends of the zipper as you sew for extra reinforcement. 6.
Once complete, trim threads and carefully remove the basting stitch. Open the zipper 3-6".

Place the printed sides of the pillow fabric together again, pin it into place and sew along the remaining three sides of the pillow. Use your zipper opening to pull the fabric through, right side out.
TIP: Trim the inside corners of the fabric to avoid fabric bunching in the corners.

Kate Zaremba had an unconventional start growing up as a child actress and singer on sets and sound stages across the country. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and moved to New York City, where she was a design assistant to Jonathan Adler and illustrated textiles for Rachel Antonoff. Now a successful maker settled in Washington, D.C., Zaremba creates whimsical textile and wallpaper designs from a workshop she shares with other female makers.

With her bold and bright luxury home décor line, you can feel Maggie's connection to her lakeside upper peninsula roots. She splits time between Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Leland, Michigan, where her seasonal shop draws customers in with colorful, unique prints inspired by waterside living. Buoyed by her background in art education, she taught herself graphic design and turned her eye for color into textile printmaking with Spoonflower.
It was an exciting winter for Erin Robertson, a 29-year-old fashion designer from Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was named winner of Season 15 for her collection featuring Spoonflower’s Poly Crepe de Chine.
