FROM THE EDITOR Park City summers are one of Utah’s best-kept secrets, and I was lucky to spend a few days in town testing the latest, greatest gear innovations at Outdoor PressCamp. We tested gear on the trails and on the water, and a favorite camp moment was stand up paddleboarding the waveless waters at Deer Valley’s Pebble Beach—a boat-free destination that’s ideal for learning. Mastering stand up paddleboarding is a Utah summer must, and in this issue you’ll learn about all the other adventures you have to have before the season ends. From scoring a coveted river permit (pg. 12) to ziplining through a forest (pg. 18) and cycling Salt Lake’s brew byway (pg. 14), there’s enough to keep you busy in the Beehive State way past Labor Day. Follow our summer adventures on Instagram at @sportsguidemag and share yours with #sportsguidemag for a chance to have your photo featured. Happy adventuring!

UTAH SUMMER BUCKET LIST

Kanarraville Falls.

5 Must-do Adventures By Alexa V. Morgan

You don’t have to be stuck indoors as temperatures soar. From slot canyons to ski slopes, here are five of Utah’s “coolest” adventures to check off your bucket list this summer.

1. HIKE SOUTHERN UTAH’S BEST SLOT CANYONS

Shade plus water equals paradise when temperatures in southern Utah’s beautiful red rock country reach the triple digits, and slot canyons offer both. Willis Creek Slot Canyon (4.8 miles roundtrip) This dog- and family-friendly retreat is a fun introduction to slot canyons for hikers of virtually all ages and fitness levels. Accessible via Skutumpah Road off Highway 12 in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument—just south of the tiny town of Cannonville. Less than 10 feet wide in some places, the canyon walls display impressive curves and lovely, subtle color changes. Shade and continuous trekking through the cool creek water, which is typically just a few inches deep, keeps hikers comfortable. Though easy to find and traverse, Willis remains a hidden treasure that is far less visited than the area’s other slots. Kanarraville Falls (4.4 miles roundtrip) This out-and-back water hike features a stunning slot with two small waterfalls. Though it sits just off I-15, 40 miles northeast of St. George, the scenery rivals any backcountry attraction. Dogs are not allowed. The first waterfall is a popular spot for photographers. A rustic wooden ladder and ropes have been fastened to the rocks to assist in climbing 8«

about 10 feet to the top. The other lies just a few hundred yards ahead and requires scrambling, though ropes are sometimes available. Hikers will be rewarded for their efforts upon arriving at a swimming pond with a mossy rockslide that brings out the kid in everyone.

2. EXPLORE SUMMER AT SKI RESORTS

The powder may be long gone, but summer is still a great time to visit Utah’s ski resorts. Experience mountain biking, hiking, camping, and fishing while gaining a new appreciation for your favorite slopes. Alta Ski Area: The Alta Lodge offers overnight accommodations and a scrumptious Sunday brunch from June until October. Camping is available in Albion Basin, where wildflowers flourish. Take an easy, family-friendly hike to discover the perfect picnic spot at nearby Cecret Lake. Brian Head Resort: Open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through September 11, summer here includes scenic lift rides, mountain biking, tubing, disc golf, a climbing wall, and archery. The annual Rocktoberfest on September 16 rounds out the season. Cedar Breaks National Monument—which offers camping, stargazing, and hiking—is only 10 minutes away. Deer Valley Resort: Offering 70 miles of thrilling singletrack spread out over six mountains, this mountain biking mecca challenges riders from novice to expert. After a busy day spent hiking, biking, or stand-up paddleboarding, spend the evening enjoying live music at the Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater.

3. ESCAPE THE HEAT WITH A HIGH-ALTITUDE HIKE

Take advantage of these beloved Wasatch trails before the snow returns. Cooler temperatures, lush greenery, and an abundance of wildflowers make for unforgettable hiking at 9,000 feet. Desolation Lake (7.5 miles roundtrip)

The narrowest and most spectacular section, nicknamed “Wall Street,” begins about 1.5 miles from the end of the Riverside Walk. The Virgin River is sometimes just 25 feet wide, with sandstone cliffs towering 1,000 feet on either side.

Starting from the Mill D North Trailhead in Big Cottonwood Canyon, this well-maintained route is a steady climb, gaining roughly 1,900 feet in elevation. About halfway up, the trail splits to offer an optional, shorter side trip to the more heavily trafficked Dog Lake.

Bottom-up hikers are allowed to go as far in as Big Spring, which makes for a fairly strenuous 10-mile roundtrip. Crossings are anywhere from ankle- to waist-deep; sturdy waterproof hiking boots, and a walking stick are strongly recommended.

This alpine hideaway has plenty of shoreline and rarely feels crowded. Set up a hammock among the pine and aspen trees and relax for the afternoon. Overnight stays are allowed, but dogs and swimming are prohibited.

Trekking 16 miles from the top down requires technical descents and spending the night at one of 12 campsites along the river. The route begins at Chamberlain’s Ranch, a 90-minute drive from Zion. Many hikers leave their cars in Springdale and book a shuttle service to the trailhead through one of the local outfitters. Reservations to acquire a permit can be made up to three months in advance. Visit nps.gov/zion or call the Visitor Center at 435-772-3256 for more information.

Wasatch Crest Trail (12.5 miles point-to-point) Popular with mountain bikers as well as hikers, the Wasatch Crest Trail runs from Guardsman Pass in Big Cottonwood Canyon to Big Water in Mill Creek Canyon. Most prefer to start at Guardsman Pass for a gentler climb. Expect panoramic views of the Wasatch Range before descending into a shady forest. Wildflowers can often be found into late summer. Dogs are prohibited. To avoid mountain bikers, visit on an odd-numbered day.

4. CHILL OUT IN THE NARROWS

Arguably the most famous feature of Zion National Park, the Narrows is one of Utah’s best-known hikes. It can be done as an out-and-back trek from the bottom up or a canyoneer from the top down, which requires a wilderness permit. The majority of visitors approach the Narrows as a casual day hike. This route begins with the Riverside Walk, a gentle mile-long paved path from the Temple of Sinawava Trailhead to the mouth of the Narrows. ¦¦¦

Like any other slot canyon, the Narrows should not be attempted when thunderstorms or flash floods are a possibility.

5. WATCH THE SUNRISE FROM THE SUMMIT OF MOUNT TIMPANOGOS

Summiting Mt. Timpanogos—the Wasatch Range’s second highest peak at 11,752 feet—is among Utah’s legendary hikes, but doing so in time to watch the sunrise is an otherworldly experience. Be sure to immortalize your climb by signing the logbook in the summit house at the top. The summit is accessible via two dog-friendly trails. Aspen Grove Trail begins at the Theater-in-the-Pines picnic area on the mountain’s east side. It is the longer of the two, at 8.3 miles in, and passes several scenic waterfalls. The 7.5-mile starts at the Timpooneke Campground in American Fork Canyon.

Hiking through the meadow below Mount Timpanogos. Some hikers choose to combine both routes to make a loop, which requires a ride to one trailhead and a vehicle left at the other. The trails meet just below the Timpanogos Saddle. For mountain bikers, Timp’s lower elevations offer miles of exhilarating rides with unbeatable scenery, including a portion of the Great Western Trail. Pack your camping gear and take a refreshing night’s rest either at Timpooneke Campground or in the backcountry before riding more singletrack. Camping is available along the shoreline of Emerald Lake or in the lovely meadow at Timpanogos Basin. Spending the night helps with altitude acclimation before climbing the remaining two miles to the top, and lets you wake up much later to catch the sunrise than if driving from the valley. Flashlights or headlamps are a necessity for navigating the summit trail predawn, as the footing can be treacherous.

3/29/17 12:37 PM

Campfires are prohibited, and any water found along the trail must be filtered before drinking. Temperatures drop quickly overnight, so bring plenty of layers. Early August is the best time for wildflowers, but Timp’s fall colors are glorious as well. Wildlife, including deer, moose, marmots, pikas, and mountain goats, is often spotted along both trails. This majestic peak is also home to Utah’s only remaining glacier. Even in summer, hikers should verify trail conditions before attempting to reach the summit by contacting the Pleasant Grove Ranger District at 801-785-3563. While completing your bucket list adventures, stay safe and please remember to Leave No Trace.

BYOB (BRING YOUR OWN BOAT)

How to Get the Best River Permits in the West By Melissa McGibbon

What are the most coveted permits for private (non-commercial) river trips in the West? Rivers that flow through protected wilderness areas have the lowest odds of launch date victory but are well worth the trouble it takes to win entry. May the odds be ever in your favor.

Winners are randomly chosen by a computer. If you don’t get a spot in a given year, the next time you try, your chances will increase and your new application will be given more weight than those applying for the first time and those who won during the previous year.

To achieve DIY paddling glory in the Grand Canyon, Selway River, and Gates of Lodore, you’ll have to have a qualified trip leader who has a working knowledge of whitewater safety, general first aid, river equipment repair, technical maneuverability skills, and solid experience on rivers of similar complexity. Everyone in your crew must follow all of the rules and regulations set forth by the powers that be, and you’ll have to BYOB (bring your own boat), obviously.

Lest you think that’s a horrible, no good, very bad way to gain access to the mother of all river trips, consider this: Prior to 2006, a wait list was used to assign river launch dates—waiting 16 to 25 YEARS was the norm.

GRAND CANYON There’s a reason the Grand Canyon is considered the granddaddy of rafting trips in the West. It features 80 big water rapids along 225 miles of the mighty Colorado River from the put-in at Lees Ferry to the take-out at Diamond Creek. It also takes between 12 and 25 days to complete—which, by the way, is more vacation days than the average American takes over the course of two years. In addition to your absent-from-work eligibility, you’ll also have to be one of the lucky winners of the weighted lottery system the National Park Services uses to determine which paddlers will be granted one of roughly 465 permits given each year for private river travel through Grand Canyon National Park. Typically, there are more than 4,000 annual applications. 12«

¦¦¦

Once you’ve created a profile on recreation.gov and submitted and paid $25 for an application, you’ll have to wait for the next lottery, which is held each year at the end of February for the following calendar year. Applications are accepted online for the first three weeks of February. If you score a launch date, you’ll be charged a non-refundable deposit of $400, which applies toward final permit fees. Final permit fees are $100 per person and must be paid 90 days before launch. Follow-up lotteries are held as needed to reassign canceled and/or leftover trips. Where to Sign Up: recreation.gov Application Fee: $25 Application Dates: First 3 Weeks of February Permit Fee: $400 Chances of Winning: 11%

SELWAY RIVER Idaho’s Selway River is the most challenging river permit to acquire, with just one launch granted per day during its short, controlled season lasting just 62 days from May 15 through July 31. On average, more than 3,300 applications are submitted each year to run these waters. Less than 2 percent win admittance. Harvard University’s acceptance rate is 5.9 percent. Just saying. The Selway is protected as a nationally designated Wild and Scenic River, which is why so few permits are distributed. Most Selway-farers take five days to go the 47 miles from Paradise to Race Creek. It’s a dynamic river known for its solitude, Cutthroat trout fishing largess, and handsome number of Class II–Class IV rapids. It drops an average of 28 feet per mile—50 feet per mile near the Moose Creek section. The Selway has its own randomized lottery and applicants can list up to four dates per application. The lottery is drawn mid-February. All hope is not lost if you don’t get a launch date; you can check for cancellations each day of the control season by visiting the recreation.gov website between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. MT to see if there is a new availability. Caveat emptor: Even if you do happen to obtain a permit, if the water level gets too high you’ll have to cancel your trip. Where to Sign Up: recreation.gov

Gates of Lodore river trips put-in at the ranger station in the northern area of Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado and flow southwest from Colorado to Utah along the Green River, meeting up with the Yampa River confluence before ending at the Split Mountain take-out. It takes four days to run the challenging 45 miles of Class III–V rapids through the towering canyon walls of Lodore. Because this river trip runs smack-dab through a national monument, only 300 multi-day launch permits are awarded through a lottery system each year. Approximately 7,000 people apply for this enviable permit. If you want a piece of this whitewater action, you’ll have to meet all the standard equipment and safety requirements for self-guided travel through the Monument, and, of course, you must first win the lottery. Each December, the Monument River Office begins accepting lottery applications for use during the high season launch dates (the second Monday of May to the second Friday of September) for the draw held in early February. Leftover permits are available through the recreation.gov website on a first-come, first-served basis. Where to Sign Up: recreation.gov Application Fee: $15 Application Dates: December 1–January 31 Permit Fee: $185

Application Fee: $10

Chances of Winning: 23%

Application Dates: December 1–January 31

River hustling is not and should not be—for everyone. You can certainly skip the hassle and defeat of permit gambling by signing up for a commercial expedition instead. You may pay through the nose, but if you’ve got the money, honey… well, you can get your fix.

Permit Fee: No per person user fees Chances of Winning: 1.87%

THE GATES OF LODORE It’s fun to say, isn’t it? One of John Wesley Powell’s mateys named the passage for the poem, “The Cataract of Lodore,” by Robert Southey, after successfully navigating its treacherous waters. This was the first major canyon they encountered during their famous 1869 expedition, which led them to the eventual first odyssey (of settlers) through the entirety of the Grand Canyon.

RIDING THE SALT LAKE BREW BYWAY 4 Breweries to Visit By Sarah Shebek

Biking and beer: so hot right now. And thanks to a surging craft beer scene in Salt Lake City, it’s easier than ever to combine a cruise with some brews. Some of the hottest new breweries in town are located within a three-mile radius, so not much pedaling stands between you and your next pint. Try this itinerary for a wellrounded sample of the Salt Lake Brew Byway—just remember to hydrate along the way!

FISHER BREWING (320 W. 800 SOUTH)

Fisher offers a spacious, modern tasting room reminiscent of those in brew meccas like Denver or Portland. They’ve embraced the industrial roots of the Central 9th/Granary neighborhood, and the brewery emerged from a space that previously housed an auto body repair shop. Inside you’ll find a diverse array of taps, including multiple beers on nitro, and food trucks regularly set up on the back patio. What to Try The saison was our favorite of Fisher’s standard offerings, with floral notes and a mild Belgian yeast backbone. But don’t shy away from the specialty beers on tap; they rotate regularly and showcase the brewers’ creativity. We enjoyed the Yellowbelly Amarillo Sunshine pale ale and a nitro coffee stout. Biking Accommodations Fisher is located at the intersection of 800 South and 300 West; the 800 South side features a bike lane in both directions. The 14«

¦¦¦

brewery’s bike rack is conveniently located within a stone’s throw of the front patio, and has enough room for at least 15 bikes. Crowlers are available for easy on-bike transport.

PROPER BREWING (857 MAIN STREET)

What started as a tiny brewpub in the Avenues has evolved into a full-fledged downtown brewery, complete with a separate restaurant and tasting room. Proper is the brainchild of Rio Connelly, who formerly worked at Epic Brewing. You’ll find a large patio on the restaurant side and a smaller front patio on the brewery side along with fun indoor games, including skeeball and shuffleboard.

SEASON PASSES ON SALE NOW!

What to Try Indecisive drinker? You can purchase samples of anything on the beer board (including bottles), and we enjoyed a gruit, a Belgian-style tripel IPA, and a strawberry saison. If you’re craving something more unique, try a beer cocktail, like the Goserita—a combination of Lake Effect Gose and tequila. Biking Accommodations Proper sits squarely on Main Street, which has a bike lane for miles in either direction. The bike rack is a bit smaller than Fisher’s–and it’s located a little more out of sight from the brewery than we’d like–but it comfortably holds multiple bikes. Once again, crowlers are available.

ROHA BREWING (30 KENSINGTON AVE. S)

What to Try If you drink in the taproom, sample the Back Porch Pale or the Three Deep American Ale. At the time of publication, these are the only two house beers on tap, but they are extremely drinkable, with solid bodies and balanced flavors. RoHa also offered two local guest taps during our visit, and you can also take cold bottles and/or cans to go of the grand saison, IPA, and double IPA. Biking Accommodations As another stop located off the Main Street corridor, RoHa is easy to reach via bike at any time of the day (convenient, since they open at 11 a.m. Monday-Saturday). There’s a small bike rack right outside the taproom so you can hitch your ride before heading in for a brew.

SHADES OF PALE (154 W. UTOPIA AVE.)

Although it’s a bit further south of downtown, Shades of Pale is still less than three bike miles from Fisher. Continue down Main Street, then turn on Utopia Avenue. Go around to the back for the entrance, but don’t expect bike parking. Take your ride inside instead, or bring it onto the brewery’s spacious back patio. The space is a bit unique, with an unfinished, warehouse vibe—fitting, since the building is an old meat packing plant. Don’t be intimidated, though. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the selection of styles is excellent.

To find the city’s newest brewery, take a short jaunt down Main Street from Proper. RoHa opened this April, and features a small but pleasant modern taproom with just a dozen seats. Chris Haas, the head brewer, worked at both Squatters and Desert Edge before moving on to open his own space. Although RoHa is the new kid on the block, the industry is already taking notice—both the Kensington Grand Saison and the Thursday IPA won bronze medals from the North American Brewers Association.

Enjoying a cold local brew after a long bike ride.

We specialize in freshness with our Pizzas, Calzones, Munchies, Salads and Hoagies. We have great Vegan and Vegetarian options. Crazy good beer selection with 24 beers on Draft and over 70 bottle beers. Full liquor license and great atmosphere with 9 TV screens for sports fans.

What to Try Seek out the bottled Brett saison with tart cherries, one of the finest examples of this style in the state. But if you miss out on it, try one of the Hogshead Reserve beers, a limited edition, rotating barrel aged selection. The most recent additions? A Belgian Tripel and Quad, both of which pack a punch. Biking Accommodations It’s easy to reach via bike off the Main Street corridor, but there’s no dedicated bike rack outside. An employee recommended bringing them inside for safekeeping. Cans or crowlers are not available, so consider bringing a lightweight growler.

Now for Something Completely Different: Cocktails While the brewery scene is certainly up-and-coming in SLC, we’d be remiss to ignore the fact that this area of town is also excellent for cocktails. Visit Purgatory (62 East 700 South) for wild cocktails, including a champagne and cotton candy creation. Don’t miss their equally creative and delicious food menu, and take a break on the expansive back patio.

Ziplining in Provo Canyon.

HIGH-FLYING ADVENTURE Utah’s Greatest Ziplines By Molly Andersen

Skimming above the treetops and across open water, down steep mountainsides, and over rugged desert landscapes, reaching heartpounding speeds of up to 60 miles per hour: Ziplining might be the most thrilling way around to get up close and personal with Utah’s diverse outdoor landscapes. With options ranging from summertime rides accessed via ski lift to the longest over-water ride in the world, there’s sure to be one perfect for your next adventure. Though they’ve surged in popularity in the last decade or so, ziplines have a centuries-long history. In nineteenth-century China and in the Australian outback, they were used to transport passengers and supplies across rivers and treacherous mountain gullies. More recently, they’ve become popular attractions in adventure destinations such as Costa Rica, Thailand, and New Zealand. But especially in countries where they’re poorly regulated, they’ve also been the sites of some tragic and highly-publicized accidents. Closer to home, professionally designed and maintained ziplines offer the chance for a thrill ride that’s challenging, yet still safe and sane.

ZIPLINE UTAH, HEBER CITY

ziplineutah.com Featuring 10 separate ziplines totalling over two miles in length, Zipline Utah’s Screaming Falcon Adventure tour is the granddaddy of local zipline options. You’ll skim above Deer Creek Reservoir’s Rainbow Bay on the world’s longest (3900 feet!) zipline over water. With seven aerial suspension bridges and up to 500 stairs, this course is not for the faint of heart. If the full tour doesn’t fit your schedule or 18«

budget, check out one of the more streamlined options (such as the $35, beginner-friendly “Out & Back”) instead.

PROVO CANYON ADVENTURES, PROVO

adventureziplineutah.com Fly over a dramatic forest landscape with this tree-top canopy tour. Surrounded by panoramic views of Mt. Timp and the Provo River, this easy-to-access course is located just a few miles from the mouth of Provo Canyon. After your adrenaline-surging ride, cool down with a stand-up paddleboard session or saddle up to explore the area at a more leisurely horseback pace.

UTAH OLYMPIC PARK ZIPRIDER, PARK CITY

utaholympiclegacy.com Live out your Olympic dreams vicariously with one of the Utah Olympic Park’s two zipline options. The Extreme Zipline, one of the steepest lines in the world, sends riders soaring from the K120 Nordic ski jump at speeds of up to 50 mph, while the Freestyle Zipline travels at a little more leisurely pace and is perfect for younger or less experienced riders.

RAVEN’S RIM ZIP LINE, MOAB

ravensrim.com Beginning with an off-road ride to the start of the line, a day at Raven’s Rim is packed with rugged adventure. Six ziplines soar over sandstone ridges and canyons, and a 100’ aerial suspension bridge makes a heartpounding path between red rock fins. The final ride of the day, the 1300’ Home Run, carries you straight over the Slickrock Bike Trail.

PARK CITY ZIP LINE, PARK CITY MOUNTAIN RESORT

parkcitymountain.com Double up with a friend for the kid-friendly Flying Eagle, a two-person zipline that’s perfect for kids where riders sit side by side for the plunge down Park City Mountain. Or race a friend (or three) down the ZipRider, where you’ll reach speeds of up to 45 mph as you zoom above the ski runs at an average 23% grade. For a bigger thrill, head to the Canyons side and race a friend across a 2,111’ line spanning the canyon between Lookout Peak and Red Pine Lodge. Sheer drops and a steep grade make zipline this not for the height averse.

Ziplining at the Utah Olympic Park.

Play It Safe A sprained ankle or concussion is a terrible way to end your zipline adventure. Maximize your fun while minimizing your chance of mishap with these few simple precautions. DRESS THE PART. Choose comfortable, safety-conscious clothing. Pick closed-toe sneakers or lightweight boots over flip-flops or sandals. Longer shorts or pants, plus shirts that can be tucked in, are most comfortable to wear under safety harnesses. Remove dangling jewelry and tuck in drawstrings. CLIP IN EARLY. Any time you’re on a zipline platform you should clip in, not just as you’re preparing for your turn. Many accidents occur when unsecured riders fall off a platform’s edge. KNOW YOUR LIMITS. If you have a heart condition, back or neck injuries, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or are currently pregnant, medical professionals recommend against ziplining. Most courses also prohibit riders weighing under 50 or over 270 pounds. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Check on a course’s safety record before ziplining. Look for courses designed or inspected by the Association for Challenge Course Technology or Professional Ropes Course Association.

ANTELOPE ISLAND

The Great Salt Lake’s Undiscovered Recreation Oasis By Connie Lewis

To Wasatch Front commuters, the Great Salt Lake is a reflective shimmer west of the freeway. To some, the lake is more a particular smell when the wind blows just right. But for recreationists who’ve explored its wonders, the Great Salt Lake is an outdoor enthusiast’s oasis. To “float like a cork” became a worldwide trademark of the Great Salt Lake. Visitors have long come to swim in this lake where they can’t sink due to the high salt content. Watersports like paddleboarding wakeboarding, sailing, and kayaking are popular pursuits here. But a visit to the lake’s islands offers opportunities beyond the water, from spectacular hiking and biking to camping.

HIKING AND BIKING GALORE

of Bridger Bay and Egg Island. Egg Island is a gull nesting area, and the surrounding wetlands are home to over 250 species of birds, making this short trail a birdwatchers’ paradise. Antelope Island is also home to Frary Peak, and the strenuous hike to the summit climbs 2,100 feet over 6.1 miles. From the top of the island’s highest peak, see stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the Great Salt Lake. The 11.1-mile one-way Mountain View Trail on the island’s eastern shore is a fun, flatter option for mountain bikers or hikers. The sandy singletrack trail begins at the Visitor’s Center and ends the Fielding Garr Ranch.

Antelope Island State Park—the largest and most developed of the Great Salt Lake’s islands—receives about 400,000 visitors a year and boasts visitor’s center, restaurant, and historic ranch museum. According to Jeremy Shaw, Park Manager for Antelope Island and the Great Salt Lake Marina, Antelope Island has between 30-35 miles of non-motorized trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Leashed dogs are also welcome on the trails. Herds of bison, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and bighorn sheep call the island home, and you’re likely to see many of these animals on a hike. You can sometime spot coyotes, rabbits, badgers, bobcats, lizards, and even a few snakes. For a short, scenic hike, try the Lady Finger Point Trail on the island’s northwestern tip. The reward of this .50-mile roundtrip trek is a view 20«

Plan to leave time for the return ride back to the Visitor’s Center. Because it is close to the water, it can be buggy in summer so bring your repellant. Unique for Utah, this trail can typically be biked year-round. For equestrian enthusiasts, Mountain View, White Rock Bay, and Fielding Garr Ranch have hitching rails for horses. Horses and bikes are prohibited on Frary Peak and Dooley Knob Trails.

ISLAND EVENTS Throughout summer, Antelope Island’s popular events give you plenty of reasons to visit: full moon hikes, star parties, wildlife programs, historic demonstrations, music events, and the annual Bison Roundup. For runners looking to put in serious miles, try the Antelope Island 50K and half marathon on November, 11, 2017. Sponsored by Buffalo Run Adventures, the 50K starts at White Rock Bay and the half marathon begins at Fielding Garr Ranch. Mountain bike and road bike races are also offered during the year, and Antelope Island State Park grants about 50 permits per year for special events. Make a night of your island visit at one of the 50 campsites on Antelope. There are no hookups, but Shaw says you’ll see RVs on the island year-round. Tent camping is also available. Reservations are recommended for busy summer weekends.

Buffalo Run on Antelope Island.

THE GREAT SALT LAKE’S OTHER ISLANDS The only other island accessible to the public is Stansbury Island. Take a gravel road from the mainland just past Grantsville off I-80 Exit 84 to the 9-mile hiking/biking trail that features petroglyphs along the trail and at least two caves. Many islands are private, like Gunnison, which is home to the largest pelican rookery in the west. Each year the Division of Wildlife Resources goes there to band pelicans and track them with GPS, and they recently installed a pelican cam in conjunction with Westminster College. To learn more about the Great Salt Lake’s islands and what’s happening at Antelope Island State Park, visit: stateparks.utah.gov/ parks/antelope-island.

DOES IT WORK?

Napier Sportz SUV Tent By Jenny Willden

I attached a Napier Sportz SUV Tent to my Mazda CX-5 to see if the car access and added space could make a night outside better. The design pairs a tent with a sleeve that wraps around your car, and you open the hatchback to create an indoor area for dicey weather and bonus gear storage. When morning comes, the sleeve detaches fast to leave behind a freestanding tent while your gear remains safely stowed.

PROS

What I liked best about this tent is the 7’ of headroom so even tall folks can move freely, and the sturdy design that’s built to withstand all kinds of weather. Spacious enough to fit four adults, it could even be a great space for lounging and game playing thanks to all the headspace and shady front awning. While it—ironically—didn’t rain on my testing trip, having the option to hop in the car when the sky opened up was a safer alternative to running through an open field in a thunderstorm to reach the vehicle.

No matter the season—or the forecasted weather—it always seems to rain on my camping parade. I’ve spent countless sleepless nights panicking in my tent as rain pours down, lightning colors the dark sky, and thunder booms overhead. After one too many nights worrying about sleeping in a tent in these storms, I decided to try camping differently.

was quick to remove when driving somewhere. But you do have to be certain to never turn on the car while the tent is attached because of carbon monoxide dangers.

VERDICT

When storms are brewing or you have a ton of gear you want to access fast, the Napier tent is a great solution. But due to the heavy weight and difficult set up, I wouldn’t recommend it as your everyday tent. Instead, choose and use it as an alternative when car access is important, you need a trunk for your pooch or kiddies to chill, or you need to simply want to create a safe campsite anywhere your car takes you. CONS

On the flip side, the tent is heavy and large to store, and attaching it to a car is difficult with one person. I was able to set up the tent on my own—though the poles were heavier than my usual camping tent— but couldn’t get the sleeve onto the car without assistance. Once attached, the quick gear and car access was handy, and the sleeve 30«
