CAN’T–MISS DESTINATIONS FOR COLORS & CAMPING Utah’s Best Fall Foliage Drives
By Don Macavoy
Fall doesn’t get as much love in Utah as other times of year, but the changing colors make it spectacular. The deep oranges of canyon maples light up the Wasatch Front, and quaking aspens in southern Utah turn bright yellow to contrast the deep red landscape. It’s the perfect opportunity to get out on weekends without the summer crowds and discover the hidden treasures that make Utah great. Not sure where to go? Here are our five favorite fall getaways in the Beehive State.
Once you pass through the town of Escalante, head to the Escalante Natural Bridge and Arch for a hike along the river past changing leaves to a dramatic red rock arch. For the adventurous driver, finish up your day on the 35-mile Hell’s Backbone section of the highway where you’ll find steep drop offs, incredible fall colors, and panoramic views high above bright yellow aspens! Take The Hogback for a slightly-less intimidating, but still scenic, drive. Don’t pass through Torrey without stopping to check out the local shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Rim Rock Restaurant offers great food and sweeping views of Capitol Reef. Or stop at the famous Hell’s Backbone Grill for gourmet cuisine. Hit up the Pando Aspen Grove to see the glowing autumnal hues of one of the largest and oldest living organisms on Earth.
SCENIC BYWAY 12: RED CANYON TO TORREY
Scenic Byway 12 is one of Utah’s best fall drives. Starting in Red Canyon, the gateway to Bryce Canyon National Park, see towering orange and red hoodoos as you drive by. Or hop on the paved bike trail that winds through the landscape to see it up close.
Photo credit: Courtesy of Visit Utah Valley
Adventure Options: Take a walk along Bryce Canyon’s Rim Trail in Bryce for an overview of this breathtaking landscape of deep canyons, hoodoos, and high plateaus. The Upper Valley Granaries along Highway 12 are a great place to stretch your legs while visiting some ancient Puebloan storage structures. On the way from Escalante to Torrey, stop to hike Lower Calf Creek Falls to see a 126foot cascade payoff on a trail bursting with fall color.

Fall at the Utah Shakespeare Festival
The Festival’s fall season features A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tavern, William Shakespeare’s Long Lost Play, and How to Fight Loneliness. Season wraps October 21. Schedule available at bard.org. ALPINE LOOP SCENIC BYWAY & PROVO CANYON
Looking for a quick overnight trip or a one-day leaf peeping drive? The Alpine Loop Scenic Byway is for you. Highway 92 takes you up American Fork Canyon through alpine canyons with amazing views of the surrounding peaks including, the towering Mt. Timpanogos. Cascade Springs is a short drive off the loop with easy boardwalk trails and mini cascading falls. Stop for lunch at Sundance Resort then follow the byway down Provo Canyon to see Bridal Veil Falls and plenty more colorful leaves.

Cedar Livestock & Heritage Festival
Adventure Option: Stop for a hike to Stewart Falls from lower Aspen Grove, or continue down Provo Canyon to hike to iconic Bridal Veil Falls. Photo credit: Utah Valley, exploreutahvalley.com
Red Tape Note: Expect $6 fee for a 3-day, $12 for 7-day, and $45 for an annual pass. The Loop is typically closed by late October due to snowfall. Find several campgrounds along the route, but they can get cold in fall due to the high altitude. Plan accordingly. Where to Stay: Camp in Provo Canyon at Hope Campground’s more primitive sites with picnic tables and grills until October 7. No water is available at Hope.
FISHLAKE SCENIC BYWAY & CAPITOL REEF NAT'L PARK
A perfect fall detour while visiting Capitol Reef National Park, this 13-mile road takes you along the northern edge of Fish Lake where you can stop at a picnic area for lunch with a view. The aspens in the Fishlake National Forest turn early thanks to the 9,000’ elevation so you can get your foliage fix before heading to Capitol Reef. Enjoy uncrowded autumn hikes, incredible vistas, and arches carved into the landscape. Adventure Option: Take the short Cassidy Arch Trail in Capitol Reef for canyon and desert vistas with perfect lunch break stops with views of the arch. Where to Stay: The Fruita Campground in Capitol Reef offers 71 sites with easy access to the many trails and scenic drives in and around the park. It’s open year-round and features flush-toilet restrooms. ¦¦¦

DINOSAUR NATIONAL MONUMENT & FLAMING GORGE
This drive will take several hours, or more if you stop to admire the beauty and take some short walks. Explore often overlooked places around Moab like nearby Dead Horse State Park or the Island in the Sky region of Canyonlands.
Northern Utah offers some wonderful opportunities for short trips with the Vernal region being a highlight. Head out on a Friday evening and stay at one of the campgrounds in town or at Dinosaur National Monument. Spend the morning exploring the scenic roads through the monument, hiking and visiting interpretive sites with real dinosaur fossils for which the park is named. Drive up Highway 191 through Ashley National Forest for fall colors in the high Uintas and onto Highway 44 around Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Take your time driving back and stop along the way at one of many small-town cafes and restaurants.
Adventure Option: Familiar hikes like the Devil’s Garden Trail and Delicate Arch have become overrun in summer months. Try them on early autumn mornings to beat the tourist crowds. Where to Stay: Camp along the Colorado River at Kings Bottom or Moonflower Campground. Sites are first-come, first-served and open open year round. Each offers vault toilets and fire rings.
Adventure Option: Hike the short trails in Dinosaur National Monument, or head up to Flaming Gorge and rent a boat for the day to explore its myriad waterways.
CEDAR CITY TO CEDAR BREAKS NAT'L MONUMENT
The Fall Color Loop is one of the best ways to see a vast amount of colors around Cedar City. Plan about two hours of travel time, plus time for viewpoints, lunch, and/or hikes. The loop can be traveled in either direction. Start with a coffee or cocoa at The Grind in Cedar City then set off on Highway 14 toward Cedar Breaks National Monument.
Where to Stay: Get a site in Dinosaur National Monument at Green River or Split Mountain Campground and enjoy a night under some of the country’s darkest skies. Wake up close to trails for easy access to hikes and exhibits. Open year round.
Connect to Highway 148 and follow it along Cedar Breaks’ natural red rock amphitheater. Set against the changing leaves, this 2,500-foot deep, canyon's dazzling spires and rock formations are a supreme backdrop for fall leaves.
MOAB AND THE LA SAL MOUNTAINS LOOP
Moab in the fall is what we wish it could be all year long. It’s less crowded, still warm enough to camp, and the changing aspens and cottonwoods give the red rock landscapes a whole new beauty. A short drive south of Moab takes you to the La Sal Mountains Loop Road, passing through some of the highest mountains in the state along with colorful aspens and lovely streams cutting through alpine meadows. 12«

From here, follow Highway 148 to the junction for Highway 143 to visit Sidney Valley, a spectacular sight in late September with immense stands of golden yellow and fiery red aspens. The pink cliffs of the Paunsaugunt Plateau glitter in the distance as an ancient lava field sprinkled with aspen trees line the highway. ¦¦¦
Continue onto Highway 143, nicknamed the Patchwork Parkway. This path is like the blocks of a quilt, weaving through historic towns, geological formations, vegetation, and wildlife habitats with recreation opportunities that appeal to sightseers, leaf peepers, and high adventurers alike. Follow other leaf peepers to Brian Head Resort to see red rock mountain landscapes intermingled with changing leaves before heading back through Parowan toCedar City.
WHEN TO VISIT FOR THE BEST LEAF PEEPING OPPORTUNITIES Plan the best possible leaf-peeping opportunities with guide below, or visit smokymountain.com/fall-foliagemap for updated color predictions. Mid-September The highest elevation areas traditionally experience 30-50% color at this time. American Fork Canyon, Dinosaur National Monument, and Cedar Breaks National Monument will be at their best.
Where to Stay: Hang your hat at Cedar Canyon Campground, just 11 miles from Cedar City, to sleep amongst changing spruce, aspen, and fir trees. If the weather is looking dicey, book a room at Abbey Inn or Best Western Town in Cedar City for easy Fall Loop access. Adventure Option: Along scenic Highway 143, find a favorite autumn leaf trail, the Alpine Pond Loop. This trail winds through SpruceFir-Aspen forest in vibrant shades of yellow, red, and orange then past the spring-fed Alpine Pond. Choose from two- or one-mile loops.
Late September–Early October Typically, the best time for leaf peeping in Southern Utah, the leaves near Brian Head, Highway 12, Capitol Reef National Park, and should be at peak. Duck Creek, Navajo Lake, and Panguitch Lake should be close behind. Mid-October Colors at high elevation are generally past peak at this time; however, there should be some great color along Highway 14 from Cedar City to Zion Overlook, as well as Parowan Canyon.

He loves hiking, biking, skiing, and disc golf as well as finding the best craft beer and vegan food in every city he visits. He writes for his website dontworryimfinite.com and can be found at @travelfinite on Twitter and @dontworryimfinite on Instagram.
Late October–Early November St. George and Zion National Park offer the best fall color viewing at this time. Lower elevations of the Colorado Plateau canyons near Four Corners are peaking.

AUTUMN AMBLES A Near-and-Far Fall Bucket List Story and Photos By Jenny Willden
BAG A PEAK
Admit it or not, snow season is just around the corner. Instead of dreading the shorter days and cooler temperatures, embrace the changing seasons by doing all the fall things. From local Utah activities to fatherflung jaunts, use this guide to check off the best autumn has to offer.
Millcreek Canyon lights up in fall, and one of the best ways to see the multi-hued palette of glowing gold and brilliant red trees is on a 5.5-mile hike to Grandeur Peak. The trail begins at Church Fork and winds through a colorful leaf canopy, popping out along the way for wide-open views of the canyon below. From the 8,299-foot summit, see 360-degree vistas of the Salt Lake Valley to the west and Parleys Canyon to the east, all amidst colorful, changing leaves.
GO OKTOBERFESTING
Would it even be fall in Utah without Oktoberfest? Spend a weekend day at 8,000+ feet for Snowbird’s Annual Oktoberfest, which has grown to be the state’s best beer festival. Sip on local Nitro Pumpkin ale topped with whipped cream paired with German sauerkraut and sausages. Stay for polka dancing, live music, and family outdoor activities. Event runs weekends through October. Free admission; $10 parking
DRINK A (PUMPKIN) BEER
Some eagerly await Pumpkin Spiced Latte season, but we’re here for the beer. Utah breweries have expanded fall flavors beyond basic pumpkin beer, adding new tastes to heavier fall brews. Taste a pint of Wasatch Brewery’s Black O’ Lantern, a pumpkin stout, or the newish Nitro Pumpkin Ale. If you fancy something stronger, make it Epic Brewing’s Imperial Pumpkin Porter. We find they all taste best served ‘round a roaring campfire—preferably paired with s’mores.
.Snowbird's Oktoberfest
TAKE ONE LAST DIP
Clear blue waters and far fewer visitors make fall the perfect time to sneak in one last weekend at the lake. Stay close to home on the Caribbean blue waters of Utah and Idaho’s Bear Lake, or venture into Nevada to see the Jewel of the Sierra, Lake Tahoe, America’s largest alpine lake. Waters may be chilly for full-on swimming, but are perfect for polar bear plunges, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Lake Tahoe 14«

GET STOKED FOR SKI SEASON
Instead of waiting in line for your season pass on opening day, take a fall color drive up the Cottonwood Canyons or Parleys and enjoy line-free, pre-season pass pickup. Then get psyched for powder days with ski movie premieres all fall long. The 69th Warren Miller ski movie, “Face of Winter” screens October 17 in Salt Lake City and continues throughout the month in Ogden, Orem, Park City, Logan, St. George, and Cedar City. See Teton Gravity Research’s “Far Out” November 26-27 at Alta’s Our Lady of the Snows and December 7 on Logan’s Utah State campus. Or follow the life of legendary skier Eric Hjorleifson watching Matchstick Production’s “Hoji,” screening November 2 at Brewvies and November 17 in Park City.
Beautiful structures dating back to the late 1800s, an old jail, and beautifully preserved cabins paired with changing fall leaves make this abandoned place one of our favorite ghost towns to visit.
RUN A FESTIVE RACE
Autumn is arguably the best time to race of the whole year. Cool temperatures and crisp air offer prime conditions for setting a PR, and costumed Halloween races put the focus back on fun. Go the distance at the Haunted Half in Salt Lake City or Provo, or get spooked on the Haunted Hustle’s 5K course where you sprint through a Tunnel of Terror and Foggy Forest—bonus points for wearing a costume.
TRY HOT (SPRING) YOGA
Outdoor yoga season is officially over, but if you still crave yoga beyond a studio’s walls, you can find it in Midway’s Homestead Crater. Hidden inside this 55-foot-tall, beehive-shaped rock, a geothermal spring maintains a year-round temperature of 95 degrees. Open to swimmers and scuba divers, Park City Yoga Adventures' stand up paddleboard yoga classes have become a popular way to enjoy the space. Stretch into Downward Dogs and Warrior poses then jump into the water for Namaste in a whole new way.

CLIMBING FOR ROOKIES
Learn the Ropes of This Rising Sport By Heather C. Hamblin
Base of Parley’s Canyon
With its own lexicon of jargon, and a plethora of mysterious-looking and sounding equipment like carabineers, Grigris, ATCs, and prusiks, sport climbing can seem daunting to jump into. After all, you’re setting out to conquer slabs of rock that are many, many times larger than you. But don’t let that scare you away. It’s a sport that meets you where you’re at, challenges you, and helps you grow.
GET EDUCATED The best way to learn how to climb is through the experience of others. Find friends. Jump into the community. Many climbing shops, gyms, and even local schools and universities offer climbing classes for all levels. The climbing community is incredibly warm and eager to help other climbers learn how to improve and stay safe. Ask lots of questions and be teachable; it’s a sport that can have drastic consequences if you aren’t educated thoroughly.
We’re fortunate along the Wasatch Front—and the whole of Utah— to be in a bed of world-renowned climbing, available all year round. And sending a climb here is equal parts terrifying and exhilarating, and gives you the tangible accomplishment of standing atop a rock wall. With a little bit of learning and the right gear, you can master the basics of climbing quickly. It won’t be long before you understand why this sport is rapidly gaining loyal followers of all ages and abilities.
You need a belayer, so you literally can’t go it alone—put yourself out there and have fun becoming part of a sport that encourages helping others along the way. Find a climbing partner and learn from one another. In a world with ever-decreasing human interaction, there’s something incredibly communal and connecting about climbing together.
Starting from scratch? That’s ok; here are some thoughts from this semi-novice to you.
If you don’t have a buddy or just want some extra instruction, try a group class like Ladies Nights at The Front, non-credit climbing classes from the University of Utah, or outdoor education with Utah Mountain Adventures (utahmountainadventures.com).
GEAR UP If you’re starting to sport climb, it’s almost inevitable that you’ll end up in a gear shop. You can find everything you need, from harnesses to shoes, and lengths of rope to quickdraws. But beyond retail sales, you can get a host of knowledge about how the products work, and even where to climb. Don’t go into a shop in a hurry; take the time to learn from the experienced climbers and gearheads that are almost always there, planning their own next route. Your nearby climbing gym can also offer a wealth of knowledge and give you a more controlled learning environment to practice skills and techniques.

Having the proper gear and equipment is really important, but don’t stress about spending hundreds of dollars right away on it. If you're starting indoors, you can easily rent gear from the climbing gym. For outdoor climbing, you’ll need to buy a harness that fits you well, a couple of locking carabiners, a good rope, and a belay device. YouTube can be a great source for learning about equipment, but your most valuable sources are guidebooks written by experts, and the skilled knowledge from local climbing shops and gyms. Some of our favorite shops to get gear and learn from are International Mountain Equipment (IME), Black Diamond, and Wasatch Touring in Salt Lake City, or The Gear Room in Cottonwood Heights. ¦¦¦

WHERE TO PRACTICE Before you climb, hone your skills and get comfortable with the gear at these local gyms:
I can tell you one thing—this crazy sport is laid-back and inclusive, with some of the raddest people amongst its ranks. They’ll welcome you and help you along your way, no matter where you are on your journey. Heather was born and raised in northern Utah, and considers the mountains to be her home. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Utah, and now works for U of U Health Sciences. She also teaches Italian language courses for the non-profit Italian Club of Salt Lake. When she does have free time, you can find her traveling, cooking, doing yoga, rock climbing, or exploring the hiking trails and ski runs in her native state.

OP
I still feel like a rookie, even though I’ve been climbing semiregularly now for two years and recently sent my first lead route. I’m a top-rope champ and can build myself an anchor and clean it without any major blunders, but there is still a lot that I don’t know. Some days, I crush a 5.11 and feel on top of the world, while others, a 5.6 kicks my trash. I guess that’s one of the appeals of climbing to me; there is only one way to go: up (no pun intended), and an infinite number of ways to get there.

But you’ll want a good guidebook too. Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills is often touted as the best for beginners and experienced climbers alike. There are also many that have been published to give you in-depth information about a specific area: the type of rock you’ll see there, numerous routes, and safety information specific to the geographic location. And a big plus—no WiFi is required for it to work. You won’t find yourself in a remote area, outside of cell service, clamoring for info on a route that you can’t seem to find.

EXTRA INFO: APPS AND GUIDEBOOKS Apps and websites like Mountain Project offer excellent information on climbing areas and routes. They’re updated regularly, and include comments from other climbers on changes have occurred in the area, or if the bolts are looking a little worn.

GETAWAY
Exploring Nevada’s Great Basin National Park By Jenny Willden
But don’t dally too long, Great Basin National Park awaits. Driving through empty desert and flatlands, it’s hard to believe this park exists, but once you turn into Baker, Nevada, the landscape shifts, 13,064-foot Wheeler Peak rises above, and golden and yellow aspens dot the autumn landscape. And in the quiet fall season, you’ll have this 77,000-acre park practically to yourself. Hike backcountry trails for hours without seeing a soul! Whether you visit for a day or a weekend, don’t skip these Great Basin adventures.
One of the least-visited national parks in the Continental U.S. is right in Utah’s backyard, and despite its grove of ancient bristlecone pine trees, dark skies, and massive limestone and marble cavern, many Utahns haven’t visited, or even heard of, Great Basin National Park. At just four hours and 240 miles from Salt Lake City, you’ll find none of the crowds of Utah’s national parks, but plenty of epic wonders and fall colors. Getting there requires an easy (and albeit boring) drive that passes through Delta, Utah and empty desert to Baker, Nevada—just across the stateline. Break up the road trip with a stop at Delta’s Topaz Museum, which honors Japanese Americans internees relocated here during World War II. Or go mining for ancient trilobite specimens at U-DIG Fossil quarry. 20«

Hike to Ancient Bristlecone Pines & Alpine Lakes See the world’s oldest living organisms on this 2.8-mile roundtrip trail with interpretive signage explaining the age and stories of these ancient trees. Continue on to see Nevada’s only glacier at the base of Wheeler Peak, or connect to the 2.7-mile Alpine Lakes Loop to visit Stella and Teresa Lakes, with views of Wheeler Peak.
2. Stargaze Under Dark Skies ‘Half the park is after dark’ is a popular slogan at Great Basin, an International Dark Sky Park with some of the nation’s darkest skies for stargazing. See the Milky Way, thousands of stars, five of our solar system’s planets, and meteors on moonless nights, or catch a free, ranger-led on Saturday evenings astronomy program. 3. Tour Lehman Caves Great Basin National Park is home to 40 known caves, but just one—Lehman Caves—is open to the public. This massive limestone and marble cave was discovered in 1885 by a rancher and miner and was first protected as a national monument in 1922. Hear stories of the cave’s past and see impressive stalagmites, stalactites, and the rare Parachute Shield formation on ranger-led tours offered year round.
Choose from one-hour guided Lodge Room walk or 90-minute Grand Palace tour, which includes extra rooms and shield formations. Tours are $9–$11 for adults; discounted for kids and seniors. 4. Drive Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive Beginning at the Park boundary on Nevada Highway 488, take a 12-mile trip on paved Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive to climbs to climb 4,000 feet on this winding path that crosses numerous ecological zones, changing from desert landscape to sub-alpine forest in minutes. End at the base of Wheeler Peak at 10,000 feet where many hiking trails begin. The white-barked aspens found here put on a spectacular show in fall, and it’s a perfect time to visit as the route closes for winter at the end of October.

5. Dine at Kerouac’s You’d never expect incredible eats in this middle-ofnowhere town, but two seasoned New York natives set up shop in Baker, Nevada after visiting on a crosscountry road trip, and the food alone might be worth the drive. Kerouac’s Restaurant and the Stargazer Inn (stargazernevada.com) is just steps away from the national park and open seasonally April–October. Kick off your day with veggie-filled frittatas, buttermilk biscuits, or avocado toast, or come for wood-fired pizzas and from-scratch American fare by night. Hear stories of other travelers over craft cocktails at Kerouac’s bar. And hang your hat at the adjacent motel if camping’s not your jam. Where to Stay Camping is primarily first-come, first-served, and while Wheeler Peak campground is the largest, it can be a bit cold for tent camping in fall. Instead, pitch a tent at one of 12 free sites along lowerelevation Snake Creek Road. The path there is dirt and no water is available, but picnic tables and clean pit toilets make it a lovely place to stay. Other $15 sites available along Lehman Creek.
Lehman Caves
For an unforgettable fall getaway without the crowds, don’t miss Great Basin National Park.

OUTDOOR FAMILY AFFAIR
Raising Tomorrow's Rippers, Shredders, and Climbers By Nick Como
Think having kids means your adventuring days are over? Far from it. We talk to three families who still get after it—with their children along for the ride. LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON. LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER: THE BURKES Park City kids follow in their parent’s bootpack, only to ski right by them.
helped Toby qualify for the IFSA North American Championships. “It was really the best day of skiing I’ve ever had at Solitude,” remembers Jay. Those are big words from a guy that has logged hundreds of days at the resort, in addition to hesitantly admitting that, “Toby surpassed his father on skis a few years ago." I’m not entirely sure when the Burkes stop to sleep: Emma can routinely be found bagging peaks, skiing Snowbird, or playing club soccer at the U of U. For the past 10 years, the Burkes have put on the Park City Point 2 Point mountain bike race (yes, the one that sells out in mere minutes each year) as a full-on family affair. While Jay does most of the legwork, his family has to put up with him. In addition to a budding ski career, Toby’s high school lacrosse team went undefeated and won state last year. This year Toby will try to balance schoolwork, high school sports, and of course, powder days, when Dad is up for playing hooky. “We are lucky to live here and have the mountains right out our door,” says Toby. I think he may be onto something, though I might point out he did win the genetic lottery.
“I don’t take chances now; it’s not worth it when you have a family,” father of two Jay Burke professed this to me many years ago, and I agree. However, we may have different interpretations of risky: earlier that week I followed him off the biggest cliff of my life on a powder day under the old Summit lift at Solitude, where we both worked in the marketing department. I’m no pro, but I’m no slouch either. Turns out he skied a similar line with his pre-teen that same week, as the Burke family also doubled as the resort ski models for brochures and ads. So, slouch it is for me.
IDAHO WHITEWATER & BIKING, WASATCH POWDER & NICARAGUA SURF: THE HOPKINSONS Class IV rapids, singletrack, surf, and black diamonds run in this international adventure family’s blood.
I became a much better skier chasing Jay around Solitude that season. And I can imagine what it was like for their son, Toby, 17, and daughter, Emma, 20, who grew up in Park City following Jay and their mother Hilary’s ski tracks and bike tires around the Wasatch. Fast-forward to this past winter: a 25” powder day in the Cottonwoods, and the elder Burke decided to sluff work and allow Toby to play hooky for a day to return to their old Solitude stomping grounds. And who do they happen to be sharing the hill with? A couple pro skiers and photogs by the names of Adam Barker, Julian Carr, and John Collinson. It’s motivation on days like this that

Most people are lucky to run the Salmon River in Idaho once in their lifetime. When your last name is Hopkinson, you’ve done it by the time you’re two. By age five, Maya Hopkinson was heading out on
the famed River of No Return on an annual basis. Rivers run deep in this family’s blood. Husband-and-wife team, Jared and Roni, have owned and operated Sawtooth Adventure Company & Rocky Mountain River Tours in Stanley, Idaho for almost two decades—sometimes booking “once-in-a-lifetimeadventures” for other families from the top of a chairlift in winter. Work hard, play hard; that’s how these folks live the dream.
California Bay Area. At just a few weeks old, Petra was in tow on a chilly morning outing to Point Reyes on the Pacific coast. Despite the sunshine, the freezing wind turned her hand purple: lesson learned for the new parents. Then, it was onto Mount Shasta and Redwood National Park, where the now six-week-old was bundled up: making those diaper changes next to babbling creeks all the more exciting.
There’s something full-circle about floating mountain rivers in summer, then following the water to the ocean where the Hopkinsons spend their “off-season” in Nicaragua. And once all that H2O condenses back into clouds, they follow the snowstorms home to the Wasatch come winter.
When winter came to the Sierra, Laura and Brian—who cut their teeth at Snowbird and Jackson Hole—weren’t about to let ski season slip by. “Petra was five months old when ski/snowboard season started, and we added her car seat and puffy onesie to our gear list,” recalls Brian. “As we did every winter weekend as part of our California routine, she would join us on the grueling, congested drive to South Lake Tahoe. Before she was old enough to ski, she would crawl—and later toddle, walk, and run—around the lodge and base area.”
Speaking of winter, Maya knows the ins and outs of powder stashes better than most 17-year-olds. Heck, better than most anyone. “Rather than arguing over typical teenage things, Maya instead begs for first tracks so she can huck a big cliff at the bottom of her favorite pillow line,” says Jared. Along with her cousin Grant, who have been pushing each other on bikes, boats, and skis since birth, charging hard is truly a family affair. “We do have a ski scholarship deal though, where she gets news skis and a season pass each fall if she maintains a 3.75 GPA,” says Jared. “It pays to have fun hoggin’, powder lovin’ parents.” Maya has earned her season pass every year, tactfully avoiding having to run a lemonade stand to fund her pursuits. Now in her senior year, Maya is on the Skyline High bike team, a perfect fit for the high level of aerobic endurance shared with her mother. Meanwhile, the youngest Hopkinson, JT, begins kindergarten this fall. “I think giving kids an intense, adrenaline activity early on in life is huge,” says Jared. Looks like the Hopkinson blueprint will live on—probably passing you and me at a high rate of speed on a nearby trail or river. FROM NURSERY TO SKIS, BIKES, AND CRAGS: THE ALWARDS Raising a toddler on skis, singletrack, and climbing routes where falling is all part of the game.
Now living back in Utah, adventures are significantly closer, offering the Alwards year-round options. “Twice a year this kid crew and their parents head to Fruita to camp and take on the trails,” says Laura. “It’s so perfect for kids. They can ride a “downhill lap” right out of the campsite and get shuttled back to camp. They feel so cool, and it makes the parents feel pretty great too, especially after a few laps of our own.” Teamwork is key here—swapping out parental units each lap—so Mom and Dad get to make some turns while their “little rippers” perfect their trail and dirt-eating skills back at camp. And the dirtier Petra gets, the more she smiles. After having witnessed her parents take some pretty major crashes over the years, Petra understand that falling—and even getting hurt—is part of biking, and that it’s okay to push it out there. And how did Petra celebrate her fourth birthday party this July? With a unicorn bike ride, of course. “From the start, climbing, biking, skiing, and snowboarding have been our go-tos,’ says Laura. “We integrated her into these from before she can remember, so she thinks they are the norm. We’ve also been so lucky to learn from other adventure parents who have given us key advice— like hiding M&Ms in the cracks as she learns to climb.” The awe of a child experiencing the outdoors should remind us all what a spectacular world we live in. The first time Petra saw a waterfall she said, “Oh wow, can we just sit here and watch it?” and will remark on a regular basis , “Ahhh, I love sleeping outside.” As a recent Saturday doing just this wrapped with s’mores around the campfire, Petra announced, “This is the best life.” We couldn’t agree more.
Nick Como escaped the skyscrapers of NYC for the tall peaks of the Wasatch. Climber, skier, canyoneer, mountain biker, and lover of food. Just don’t think of offering him pizza with pineapple on it.
“Welcome to the team.” That’s the ethos Laura and Brian Alward employed when their daughter Petra was born into their adventuring family, which had relocated from SLC to the ¦¦¦
