STARTING LINE FROM THE EDITOR I—like many people—am guilty of traveling the world but missing sights right in my own backyard. I’ve never hiked to Timpanogos Cave or peered down into Kennecott Copper Mine, and until a few weeks ago, I’d never vacationed in St. George. Growing up, St. George was a pass-thru point on the way to Vegas—not a destination. But this month I drove four and a half hours (Thanks to 80mph speed limits.) to this southern Utah town for a weekend of outdoor adventure in Snow Canyon State Park and spacationing at Red Mountain Resort. Read all about it on page 10. Photo Credit: Melissa McGibbon

GIRLFRIEND GETAWAYS

A Red Rock Weekend in St. George By Jenny Willden

A classic girls’ trip means plenty of poolside lounging, pampering, and even the occasional pillow fight. But if you want to get more out of your getaway, take your lady squad to St. George for a soul-searching, heart-pumping, gourmet-food-eating weekend so good…you may want to stay forever.

The resort was quiet, but full of adventurous people: solo travelers, friends, couples, and even mother-daughter duos, all here fusing outdoor recreation with relaxation—some hoping to find themselves in the process. The welcoming campus blends with the natural surroundings and boasts three pools, fitness center, spa, outfitter gear store, and a restaurant serving three gourmet meals per day. After one delicious dinner of vegetarian cauliflower korma and the fresh salad bar—I knew we wouldn’t miss a meal during our weekend here. But there’s more to Red Mountain than incredible eats.

Despite a lifetime of living in Utah, I’d never visited St. George before. Sure, I’d passed through on our way to Mesquite (our family vacations were fancy like that), but I’d skipped the vibrant red rock cliffs and lava rock-strewn trails of beautiful Snow Canyon State Park. To remedy it, we traveled 4.5 hours south, trading SLC’s mountain views for St. George’s colorful landscape on a girls’ getaway to Red Mountain Resort.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE Red Mountain is an all -inclusive health retreat, though it’s not based on deprivation or strict schedules. Some classes require a sign up or fee, but most are drop-in and included so you can schedule your days on the fly. From Zumba to chakra balancing to yoga to barre to fitness drumming, you could fill every day and still not do it all.

But that’s not necessarily the point, part of the ethos at Red Mountain is that after a few days, doing all the things won’t seem so necessary— maybe you’ll just want to lounge in a hammock instead. We never quite reached that level of Zen, instead exhausting ourselves with group hikes, tough core workouts, and paddling an oversized unicorn floatie through the outdoor pool—tougher than it looks. Soon our FOMO kicked in, and we lamented missing an underground hike to the Lava Tube Caves and a Pound Puppies hike to walk shelter dogs—that was canceled (happily) because all the pups were adopted.

park’s 7,000 acres and 40+ hiking trails is daunting, but Red Mountain Resort makes it easy by offering a different hike every day of the week. Our all-girl group took the 1.5-mile Hidden Pinyon Trail, a short but slightly strenuous trek that crosses sandy dessert and travels up steep slickrock fins to a panoramic overlook of the park. It’s named—quite literally—for a tough-to-see pinyon tree visible from the overlook growing at a higher-than-typical elevation. After taking in the view, duck into a short, non-technical slot canyon for a different kind of trekking. Photo Credit: Jenny Willden

Not a hiker? Bring your road bike and pedal the 18-mile protected bike loop through the park past towering white and red Navajo sandstone formations. Bike riders also save $2 on the $6 entrance fee.

Hiking the Hidden Pinyon Trail.

It makes sense why so many people come back each year, there’s to much too do in one visit. We sought quiet on the resort’s peaceful Inspiration Trail, which wraps through sandy desert and past black lava tubes to The Labyrinth. Here, you walk a circular path to its center with a rock in hand—leaving it behind as a symbol of the things in life you no longer want to carry. GET A SPAAHH TREATMENT While we’re all about finding our inner peace, it wouldn’t be a girls’ trip without a spa visit, right? At Sagestone Spa, big windows overlook the colorful cliffs, and treatments range from the recovery bliss of the Red Rock Hiker’s Massage, designed to rejuvenate weary legs, to the unique Red Rock Revitalizer, where a Vichey shower rains over you during a massage. RED ROCK HIKING AT SNOW CANYON STATE PARK After you’ve maxed out on spacationing, head to Snow Canyon State Park—just a quarter-mile from Red Mountain Resort. Snow Canyon seems a misnomer for this sunny, red rock wonderscape, but it was actually named for early Utah settlers, Lorenzo and Erastus Snow— not the weather. Preserved petroglyph panels in the park showcase evidence of earlier inhabitants, Ancestral Pueblonians, who hunted and gathered here from 200-1250 A.D. Since their day the park’s become a recreation hot spot, and even the backdrop for Hollywood blockbusters like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Today, you won’t find outlaws hiding in these hills, but the red Navajo sandstone partnered with ancient black lava rock makes for breathtaking hiking and biking. The vibe is similar to Zion, but without the crowds and shuttle buses. Knowing where to start in the

Sunset at Quail Creek State Park.

SUNSET PADDLING AT QUAIL CREEK STATE PARK Post-trekking, cool off with a paddle and swim at Quail Creek State Park—a seemingly undiscovered desert oasis adjacent to the busy I-15 freeway. The juxtaposition of colorful rock walls against this lake’s brilliant blue water makes for a scenic, serene setting that’s stellar for a sunset paddle. At this hour, the boaters are mostly gone, so you’ll have the colorful sky and glassy waters all to yourself. Put in your kayak or paddleboard at the park’s north end and make your way up the small tributary of Quail Creek. Here lush overhanging tree branches, diverse waterfowl, and the narrow waterway make you forget you’re at a reservoir. Paddle all the way back to a pair of rope swings, and don’t be afraid to jump in—the water is some of the warmest in Utah. Go with Red Mountain Resort on a scheduled sunset tour for $120, or DIY it and rent a kayak or stand up paddleboard for $25 for two hours at Dig Paddlesports waterside shop at Quail Creek State Park. IF YOU GO Getting to Red Mountain Resort and Snow Canyon State Park is easy; take I-15 south for about 300 miles to St. George, Exit #6. Follow Bluff Street for four miles and turn left on Snow Canyon Parkway. Look for the Red Mountain Resort sign, or continue into Snow Canyon State Park. Save by bringing your lady friends here during the low season (Juneearly September). Yes, it will be hot, but there are plenty of pools, unlimited indoor fitness classes, and early morning hikes to keep you cool. Jenny is a Utah native and Managing Editor of Outdoor Sports Guide. BIKING & BEER IN BOISE Idaho Summer Adventures By Nick Como

Boise, Idaho: Just a five-hour trip from Salt Lake, this city doesn’t seem to be on the radar for many Utahns—but it should be. Boise looks a lot like Salt Lake City did about 20 years ago, boasting a growing downtown, foothills with recreational opportunities, and a feeling that it’s about to come into its own. The expanding brewery scene is similar to Portland’s boom, with several local startups and a few expansions from Oregon opening here. Two of my wife’s brothers live in Boise, so we went to catch up with family and sample the local suds. Her youngest brother, Jason, attends Boise State University, and therefore knew each and every tap within 20 miles! He agreed to tour guide us (via Uber, of course) to several local spots, and we agreed to introduce him to mountain biking. As a champion athlete in wrestling and football, biking was new to him, and my only chance to compete athletically with him. By the end of the weekend he was—of course—just as fast as I am on two wheels. MOUNTAIN BIKING IN THE FOOTHILLS Speaking of riding, we rode several of the easily accessible foothill trails northeast of downtown. The terrain and views are very similar to the Bonneville Shoreline, but offer way more (MTB Project counts 75) trails to choose from that reach higher on the ridgeline. We started riding at a trailhead called Hulls Creek near the Jim Halls Foothills Learning Center, no more than 10 minutes from downtown. The first mile or two of trail was busy with hikers, joggers, and other bikers, but 12«

the crowds easily dispersed onto the plethora of trails in sagebrushlike terrain. The trail began as wide double-track, getting narrower as the climb continued up Crestline and to Sidewinder, but nothing was above intermediate-level riding, providing fun pedaling for all. The routefinding was quite easy and with so many trails, we were able to ride downhill without running into climbing riders—a huge change from trying to ride down City Creek or Dry Creek— the only easier options than the advanced Bobsled Trail back home. I found myself wishing SLC would expand the foothill trail system above the Bonneville Shoreline Trail: the options Boise locals have for riding blows away what we have accessible in the foothills. Riders here can opt for quick loops, out-and-backs, or tackle marathon rides to distant ridgelines with views back into downtown Boise. With southern exposure the trails were bone dry in spring, and would likely be hot in the dead of summer. A few higher elevation trailheads offer quicker access to trails heading further north toward taller trees and ample vegetation. We didn’t make it quite this far, but the Gardiner Peak Trail is on my list for next time, as is the Bogus Basin’s (a winter ski resort) summer biking trail system. BOISE BEERS Our first stop on our Boise beer tour, 10 Barrel Brewing, originally opened up shop in Oregon. This expansion location features many of

Next up was Sockeye, where the brewhouse feels like a hunting lodge, thanks to its long wooden bar and knotty pine furniture. The beers are rock solid as well, with my favorite being the Dagger Falls IPA. the brews you’re used to seeing from 10 Barrel: Apocalypse and Joe IPAs, Cucumber Crush Sour, plus dozens of others. Several uniques beers are brewed on-site in Boise’s 20-barrel system.

Payette Brewing, also located downtown, offers a dozen or so beers on tap well above Utah’s standard 3.2% ABV. Seasonals and standards provide options after a day of adventuring. The North Fork Lager is a refreshing option after a day in the sun. Payette also has a rotating schedule of food trucks. The closest suds to the trails we rode were found at Parrilla Grill, in a little section of Boise known as Hyde Park that’s reminiscent of SLC’s 9th and 9th area. While not a brewery, this neighborhood joint had incredible Mexican food and plenty of local beers on tap.

C

MORE BOOZE Boise also has something for the wine lovers. After two days of bike, beer, repeat, my wife was ready to mix it up. “Not aaaanother brewery,” was her exact quote I recall. While I was lamenting missing out on local taprooms we had yet to check out—Slanted Rock in nearby Meridian, as well as the namesake Boise Brewing, Edge Brewery, and (you get the idea)—Jason steered us towards a place called Bodovino. Offering easily over one hundred bottles in Wine Emotion machines, Bodovino is a wine lover’s heaven. M

If we’d been able to pry ourselves away from the comfortable patio at Bodovino and our assortment of tapas, we may have tried some tastes from Snake River Winery, just across the street. But, we’ll have to add that to the list for a return trip to Boise—as well as all the breweries I missed.

RE TU EN DV A

This sensory overload experience works like this: load up a plastic card with a set amount of dollars and bring your glass around to these machines, similar to a vending machine where you can choose pours of one, two, or five ounces and have the cost deducted from your card. It’s an amazing way to sample expensive or unique wines without committing to a full glass or bottle. Bodovino also had a wine cellar list totaling over 600 bottles, as well as an ice cold selection of bottled beer, and a cigar library. There is nothing like this place in Utah, or many other places for that matter.

BEARS EARS NATIONAL MONUMENT What to Know Before You Go By Heather Hamblin

The news is abuzz with Bears Ears lately. The Bears Ears National Monument was declared in December 2016, and since then has garnered both applause and criticism. The current boundaries of the monument are massive—they encompass 1.35 million acres of now federal land in Southeast Utah. The monument got its name from a formation near the center of the land area, where two plateaus stand out above their surroundings, looking like the ears of a bear hiding in the brush. The area is incredibly diverse, with varied opportunities for outdoor adventure. Whether you’re looking for hiking, climbing, backcountry camping and backpacking, or hunting for petroglyphs and ruins, Bears Ears is worth checking out, but the area is rugged, so be sure to keep these tips in mind when planning your trip. 1. DO YOUR RESEARCH A visitor center volunteer said that, after 65 years of exploring the Bears Ears area, he had nowhere near seen all of it yet. So yeah, it’s really big. But you can be an informed traveler and see a lot of amazing terrain. The Bureau of Land Management’s site (blm. gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/utah/bears-earsnational-monument) has great maps and some brochures on specific sites, and a helpful FAQ page. Your best information may come from speaking with friendly volunteers and rangers at the Monticello field office, the Blanding Visitor’s Center, and the Kane Gulch Ranger Station. From Salt Lake City, there are four main ways to get there. Taking Highways 6 and 91 south through Price and Moab gives you the 14«

STRAYCATIONS 2017

¦¦¦

Travel Tales

¦¦¦

most options for gas, food, and lodging along the way, and will take you roughly 6 hours. Blanding could serve as an excellent launching pad for your trip, with a number of small inns and motels, and is perhaps your last chance to stock up on supplies and fuel. 2. KNOW WHERE TO GO There truly is something for all interests and levels of physicality in Bears Ears. For more casual hikers or families with children, explore the numerous canyons of Butler Wash. There are several short hikes that offer great rewards as you drive north to south along Comb Ridge, like Monarch Cave or Wolfman Panel. Along Highway 95, the Mule Canyon hike houses one of the most well-known sites, the House on Fire ruin. On a hot day, head down to the banks of the San Juan River. A short walk along the river at Sand Island Recreation Area offers a number of petroglyph panels and ruin sites, under a tree canopy and with a cool breeze coming off the water. Sand Island also has developed campsites with restroom facilities. For backcountry exploring, head to the Grand Gulch Primitive Area, or the Dark Canyon Wilderness. Be sure to visit the ranger station to obtain proper permits and get current terrain condition information. To the north, along UT-211, there are a number of established campgrounds, and a stunning overlook of The Needles in Canyonlands National Park. Though not technically a part of Bears Ears, Natural Bridges National Monument is an island within Bears Ears, and is certainly worth seeing while in the area.

On the south end of the monument, the Valley of the Gods offers 360-degree views of dramatic rock formations and the ascending cliffs of Cedar Mesa. With a winding road across the valley floor, it’s a great place to take in the sights and camp for the night. There are no designated campgrounds or facilities here, but the valley floor is littered with sites made homey by previous campers. Needless to say, though, you could spend a lifetime exploring the area, so these suggestions are by no means exhaustive. 3. COME PREPARED Because this is now federally-protected land, some might assume that it is developed and accessible like many national parks; it is not. Bears Ears still affords a rugged and wild experience. There are places where campgrounds provide picnic tables, fire pits, and restrooms, but much of the area is still open to camping and backpacking without developed resources. You will not find shuttle buses to paved hikes, so know your skill level and come with proper gear. Be sure to bring plenty of water with you, as southern Utah is a desert, so natural water sources are scarce. Put some thought into the vehicle you take through the monument; there are many roads that are unpaved and may not be accessible by low-clearance vehicles. Once you get past the small towns at the borders of the monument, you could be miles away from another gas station. Pay attention to you gas tank, and fill up well before you are low. But don’t let the untamed nature of the monument dissuade you—there’s plenty to do for all skill levels. Just be smart, and don’t be caught unprepared.

¦¦¦

4. RESPECT THE AREA AND ITS HISTORY Some sources report that there are over 100,000 cultural sites and artifacts within Bears Ears. Many visitors seek out the area after doing research on its native inhabitants and are thrilled to see wellpreserved rock art and petroglyph panels, along with dwelling and ceremonial sites. Unfortunately, however, many of the rock art sites have been defaced by lovers carving out their names in the sandstone, or even smallbusiness owners painting their website near ancient messages. As visitors to the area, we’re incredibly fortunate to get a glimpse of history, and must respect the sacredness and cultural significance of the sites. Though there may not be a fence protecting a centuries-old cave dwelling, you can help preserve it for future study and enjoyment by observing, appreciating, and leaving things untouched and undamaged by human hands. Some see the national monument declaration as a federal land grab, while others are adamant that any measure necessary must be taken for the area’s protection. Whatever side of the debate you are on, Bears Ears remains an incredible part of Utah’s diverse and unique landscape, ready and waiting for outdoor adventure and exploration.

GREAT EXPLORATIONS

Adventures in Yellowstone National Park By Melissa McGibbon

In 1872, expedition and geological survey leaders—who had experienced the splendor of the Yellowstone area and recognized its inestimable value—persuaded President Ulysses S. Grant and members of Congress to establish Yellowstone as the world’s first national park.

To avoid the hassle of getting stuck in traffic, skip entering the park by way of a tour bus, camper, or car. Outsmart the sheeple and go instead by bike or foot—you (probably) won’t get eaten by a grizzly bear, and you might feel like you have the place to yourself. Park research shows that 90 percent of people who visit Yellowstone each year never leave pavement or boardwalks to explore on their own. Photo Credit: @dcrjsr

I have vivid memories of visiting Yellowstone for the first time when I was a kid. Our family did the usual stuff—watched Old Faithful erupt, marveled at the Grand Prismatic Spring, and hiked around the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone to find the best view of Yellowstone Falls. And though I have been there many times since then, it remains as magical as my first visit. I never tire of it. Apparently, everyone else feels the same because, sheesh, it has become much more crowded since my first gawk in the eighties.

boom, “During the busiest times of the year, visitation levels in the park have led to long lines, traffic congestion, diminishing visitor experiences, and impacts on park resources.”

Do your part by following park rules when you flee long traffic lines for the trails. Stay on the path as you explore more than 900 miles of hiking trails in Yellowstone. Keep your bear spray handy, and note that permits are required for overnight backpacking. Fairy Falls, Bunsen Peak, Mystic Falls, and Lava

Last year, a record-breaking four million people visited the park. The growth of visitation is truly staggering considering that just 50 years ago the park hosted only around 200,000 visitors. Of course, there are 3.9 billion more people on the planet than there were in the mid-sixties. BEAT THE CROWDS Park Superintendent Dan Wenk, said of the 16«

Creek are good options for day hikes and range in difficulty levels. Start early to avoid the masses and get the best pictures. BIKE THE PARK Each spring and fall, when the roads are cleared of snow, the park allows cyclists on certain roads before and after the main roads close to motorized traffic free of charge. Cyclists can ride the 50 miles between the West Yellowstone and North Yellowstone entrances until late April, and they’re allowed to explore several sections of the Grand Loop Road until the roads become snow covered in November. It’s remarkably quiet, and bison, bird, and bear sightings are not uncommon.

Biking in Yellowstone National Park.

Cycling in the park is still good when the roads open to motorized traffic, though. The roads are wide enough and cyclists may find themselves skirting the traffic jams. If you find yourself in need of a break to cool off during your ride, stop by Firehole Falls, near the Madison Junction and take a swim in the Firehole River. This natural swimming hole is a great place to cool off on a hot summer day. WHERE TO STAY Stay at the Explorer Cabins at Yellowstone, and you’ll be a fiveminute bike ride from the West Yellowstone entrance. Once you’re there, provided you’re up for the biking mileage, there’s almost no need to drive your car. Free cruiser bikes are available for guests to ride around town or in the park.

Explorer Cabins at West Yellowstone

Dodging the crowds at Yellowstone National Park can be tricky business, but according to the locals, the best time to visit is during the first or last three weeks of the park season.

The best part about the Explorer Cabins is that they’re right across the street from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, where rescued grizzly bears and gray wolves live, so you can often hear the wolves howling in the morning and evening from your front porch. This habitat is a great place to see bears and wolves up close without pooping your pants. ¦¦¦

DIVE IN!

The 6 Greatest Swimming Holes in Utah (and Beyond) By Molly Andersen

Lower STRAYCATIONS Calf Creek Falls, Escalante, Utah Health 2017 ¦¦¦ 18«

¦¦¦

sportsguidemag.com

¦¦¦

Summer hikes can be carefree, challenging, or even exhilarating. But almost without exception, they’re dusty and hot. That’s why finding a swimming hole along your path can be like stumbling upon a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Unfortunately, many mountain lakes along the Wasatch Front are watersheds that don’t allow swimming. So the next time you want to take a refreshing dip after logging trail miles, head out of the city and dive into one of these six destinations. 1. UPPER AND LOWER CALF CREEK FALLS Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Escalante, Utah Tucked among weathered stone monoliths, this desert destination is named for its former use as a natural pen for calves. Today, the milelong trek to the falls takes you to a pair of verdant oases. The more heavily trafficked Lower Calf Creek Falls offers a deep natural swimming pool at the foot of a spectacular 130-foot waterfall. For a little more hiking and a lot more solitude, choose the steep and scrambly Upper Calf Creek Falls route instead. The waterfall is smaller, measuring just 88 feet high, but you’ll find peace and quiet (and a few smaller, jumpable falls) at the trail’s end. 2. DEATH HOLLOW CANYON Box-Death Hollow Wilderness in Escalante, Utah For a serious challenge with a serious reward, take a long weekend and tackle this 14.4-mile out-and-back trail. (Or, if you’re an experienced climber, you can tackle the super-steep “sneak route” that will get you in and out of the canyon in a single day.) You’ll wend your way through a steep-walled canyon of brilliantly colored Navajo sandstone. Beware the poison ivy that clogs much of the trail during the summer, and be prepared for frequent steep, technical scrambles. Once you reach the water, though, you’ll enjoy virtual solitude in an emerald pool surrounded by mosses, ferns, and wildflowers.

3. RED REEF NATURAL WATER SLIDES Red Cliffs Recreation Area in St. George, Utah Untitled-1 This seemingly barren, sun-scalded area hides a secret gem. An easy 1.5-mile hike leads you past alcoves containing ancient pictographs to a slot canyon with a climbable waterfall. Along the way, a variety of pools will tempt you from the trail, and some even feature waterwashed rocks at the perfect angle for sliding. This area is accessible enough to be popular with families, so consider a weekday visit if personal space is important to you. Several first-come, first-serve campsites offer an overnight option, while the day-use area is supplied with picnic tables and drinkable water. Bonus: The nearby .16-mile Silver Reef Trail leads to dinosaur tracks.

4. MILL CREEK NORTH FORK Near Moab, Utah Skip the fast-moving, murky waters of the Colorado River and head for a refreshing dip at this popular spot instead. Just a quarter-mile down the trail, you can choose from several shallow pools, many of which have current strong enough to propel you along natural rock slides. Farther upstream, cliff jumpers plummet into the pool at the base of the falls, but unreliable depths and hidden rocks make this a risky venture.

Mill Creek North Fork

5. MONA ROPE SWINGS Mona, Utah Rather skip the hike and walk straight up to an idyllic swimming spot? Just half an hour outside Provo, the tiny town of Mona is home to a series of large, spring-fed ponds lined with old-fashioned rope swings. Grab on, hold tight, then sail out over—and into—the waters of the Burraston Ponds. Pack a picnic lunch and a kayak or canoe if you’re in the mood for a paddle. Table sites go quickly on weekends, so plan an early start.

7

6. MONKEY ROCK Near Rexburg, Idaho For an adventure a little further from home, head north to this popular splashing spot located near BYU-Idaho. Scale the rocky falls, then plummet— if you dare and have checked the water’s depth first—into the sparkling pool below. Not feeling like such a daredevil? The swimmer-friendly waters and photogenic setting make Monkey Rock a relaxing destination even if you’re not looking for an adrenaline rush. A word of warning: Stay out of the waters above the falls. They’re deceptively fast-moving and can sweep unwary swimmers over the edge and onto the rocks. Wherever you swim this summer, be sure to follow posted rules and stay away from the water if a storm is brewing.Flash flooding can quickly turn a calm swimming hole into a danger zone.
