Utah’s Best Destination Races

By Lora Erickson

Instead of a traditional vacation, many runners are opting for “racecations” where they race in the city they’re visiting. Racing is the best reason to travel in my opinion, and I have a personal goal of racing in all 50 states in my lifetime. But you don’t have to hop on a plane to take a racecation! Explore Utah and run in a beautiful place while overnighting at one of our five favorite destination races. OGDEN MARATHON MAY 19, 2018 This race is Utah’s biggest single outdoor marathon and is known for its outdoor beauty, world-class views, and competition; it’s no wonder the phrase “Get Out and Live” is a commonly associated with the area. As for the race, it draws people from all over the country to compete as well as local athletes. I can attest to the beauty of this course as it literally took my breath away running down the canyon. This race also supports the Goal Foundation’s charitable causes. Use discount code blonderunner18 to save $10 on race registration. Complete this race and the St. George Marathon in a year and receive the special Red Rocks & Mountain Tops medal.

downtown Ogden. Both offer deals for racers, and Bigelow Hotel throws in a free grab-n-go runner’s breakfast. SIGN UP: ogdenmarathon.com BRYCE CANYON HALF JULY 14, 2018 Run past Bryce Canyon’s legendary red rock and through the small towns of Tropic and Cannonville at this summer race. Although I haven’t personally raced Bryce, it’s getting rave reviews from all my running friends, so I’m adding this half to my must-do list. This event also offers a 5K on Saturday, and a 1-mile Color Me Fun Run on Friday, making it a great event for all ability levels.

WHERE TO STAY: Many stay at the Ruby’s Inn by the starting line, or if you are a camper like me, make reservations at the campground next to Ruby’s Inn. SIGN UP: brycecanyonhalfmarathon.com TOP OF UTAH MARATHON SEPTEMBER 15, 2018 This race starts at Hardware Ranch Elk Refuge and follows the river down Blacksmith Fork Canyon, eventually winding through downtown Logan, home of my alma mater, Utah State University. The course drops about 1045 feet over the 26 miles to give you a speed boost, but is only a 1% to 2% grade so it won’t kill your legs and knees. Top of Utah’s fun for spectators too; the first 100 arriving at Merlin Olsen Park to watch finishers receive a souvenir pin with the same design as the finisher medallion. WHAT TO SEE: If you get a chance, explore the hikes up Logan Canyon or stop at the small zoo at Willow Park with your children. I always like to stop at Gossner’s Cheese for a treat after the event.

Bryce Canyon Half

WHAT TO SEE: While in Bryce, explore the sandstone cliffs on foot or by horse. Take the easy 1.8-mile Queens Garden Trail into the canyon to see the hoodoos up close without tiring your legs for the big race.

The half is well organized with great local support, and each aid station has a fun theme as locals compete to “win the best aid station.” Race registration also includes a nice tech shirt, medal, and great swag. Runners who return year after year tell me the route has beautiful scenery, and the first 7-mile stretch is downhill—so you’re likely to finish fast.

WHERE TO STAY: Affordable SpringHill Suites is near Utah State University and the finish line, and boasts a free hot breakfast and heated swimming pool. SIGN UP: topofutahmarathon.com THE OTHER HALF OCTOBER 14, 2018 Race past red rock canyons, stunning rock formations like Fisher Towers and Castle Rock, and the La Sal Mountains on this paved course that runs parallel to the Colorado River. Runners are shuttled up to the start and the route winds down the canyon with just a few short hill climbs before finishing at Sorrel River Ranch. This event began in 2004 as a fall companion to the popular spring Canyonlands Half Marathon and is the perfect end-of-season race. Do both events in a year and receive a Canyonlands Marathon medal. ¦¦¦

All runners must take the bus to the start from the high school, and the entire course is paved. Follow a pacer to stay on track with your desired finish time. Not up for running 13.1? Sign up for the 5K that’s run on the surrounding trails. There are also onemile, half-mile, and 200-meter dash races for kids. Saving Your Skin Preventing (and Spotting) Skin Cancer By Molly Andersen

Photo Credit: image licensed by ingram image

Stephanie was fresh out of the shower, applying moisturizer to her face, when she noticed the spot on her cheek for the first time. She didn’t think much of it; as an avid hiker and busy mom of three, she spent plenty of time outside, and she figured it was just another addition to her collection of freckles and moles. But there was something different about this spot. Its texture was rougher than the other marks on her skin, and over the following months she noticed it slowly increasing in size. Finally, reluctantly, she made room in her schedule for a dermatology appointment and received the diagnosis every patient dreads: skin cancer. Utah’s 250-plus sunny days per year and abundant outdoor opportunities have a dark side: an increased risk of all forms of skin cancer. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, strikes Utahns at a rate of 42.4 new cases per 100,000 residents; that’s higher than any other state. You’re probably already familiar with the most basic skin cancer prevention advice: wearing sunscreen, staying out of the sun. But Dr. Douglas Woseth, M.D., FAAD, of Swinyer/Woseth Dermatology in Salt Lake City, has some special tips for athletes to minimize your risk while still enjoying the outdoor activities you love. Sunscreen may be your first line of defense against skin cancer, but Dr. Woseth cautions that not all products are the same: “Sunscreens may have physical or chemical active ingredients. Look for a product that contains mineral ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium oxide. These go to work right away, rather than needing time after 12«

application before they’re fully effective. They’re also less likely to cause an irritating reaction on your skin.” Hot, sweaty runs or rides can erode any sunscreen’s effectiveness. Dr. Woseth suggests choosing a water-resistant product: “No sunscreen is truly waterproof.” Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating. For added peace of mind, look for the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation on the product you choose. Sunscreens marked “For Daily Use” are great for regular use, while those with the “Active Seal” are designed to withstand extended sun exposure. Make applying a high-SPF moisturizer part of your morning routine to ward off the incidental UV exposure that damages skin over time. PREVENTION TIPS Since most skin cancers occur on the face and neck—areas that get the most sun—it’s a good habit to wear a hat for added protection. The Columbia Coolhead Zero Booney hat ($45), constructed of OmniShade UPF 50 sun-blocking nylon, is a time-tested classic. Its wide brim and neck shade shield your skin, and the Omni-Freeze ZERO lining offers sweat-activated cooling, keeping you comfortable while protecting you from UV rays. During the sunny summer months, look for ways to limit your exposure during peak sunshine hours (10 a.m.–3 p.m.). Schedule your workday runs for early morning or late afternoon. On days off, seek out shaded spots such as the Desolation Loop in Millcreek Canyon or the Dry Creek section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for unusual marks on kids and ¦¦¦

partners, too. Children aren’t immune to skin cancer; melanoma accounts for 3 percent of all childhood cancers, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. And, especially on hard-to-check areas such as the back of the neck and shoulders, a partner’s sharp eye can catch a suspicious growth long before you might find it yourself. TREATMENT OPTIONS What to do if you notice “something weird,” as Dr. Woseth describes skin cancers’ general appearance? While your primary care physician can give you a first look, you should seek a referral to a dermatologist for a thorough check. Look for a doctor who is boardcertified by the American Academy of Dermatology (see aad.org/ find-a-derm for a searchable directory). With highly effective options such as Mohs micrographic surgery available, skin cancer—especially when caught in the early stages—can be treated thoroughly, minimally invasively, and with strong chances of full recovery. As Stephanie says, “I froze up when I heard the word ‘cancer’—but three years later, I’ve had no signs of recurrence, and I’m definitely taking better care of my skin for the rest of my life.”

Melanoma — The ABCDEs Is that mark on your shoulder just a mole— or could it be an early-stage melanoma? These five signs can help you identify a skin change that warrants a call to your doctor. Asymmetry: Is the mole round or elliptical, or does it have a lopsided shape?

Borders: Does it have clean, clear borders, or does it look patchy or smudgy?

Nebo Half Marathon starting line

David Bell’s Quest to Bring Distance Running to Everyone Story and photos by Don Macavoy

David Bell has pride in his voice as he describes his three criteria for a perfect half marathon course, “It has to be beautiful, it has to be fast, and it has to have a unique element to it.” Using this criteria, he’s developed Utah races that keep people coming back to set PRs, run unique courses, and be part of the growing community he’s built. IN THE BEGINNING From participating in his first race at age of 6 with his father to his first marathon at 17, running has always been a part of David’s life. “My dad loved running, so that’s what we did growing up was to go run together,” says David. After graduating from BYU with a degree in manufacturing engineering, he opened a shoe store called 26.2 Running Company, which became a big part of Utah’s running community. This led to David’s decision to start Runtastic in 2010; one year later they held their first event—the Timpanogos Half Marathon. Since that first year, David sold his shoe store to focus solely on growing Runtastic and creating better events for runners: “I want to give people something they can work toward in racing. I want to motivate people and give them something that will be lasting and memorable for an accomplishment or a purpose they ran for. That’s what keeps me doing it,” says David. Runtastic now has seven half marathons throughout the year, recently adding the Heber Half to its roster. While average race registrations in the U.S. have fallen in recent years, Runtastic has maintained a 10–30% growth, becoming more popular each year. Dino Half Marathon 16«

Why? Because along with creating interesting, runner-friendly courses, David takes a personal interest in making sure all runners go home with quality swag. Photographers stationed along the course and after the finish line provide free photos. He works with artists and designers to create distinct medals and comfortable shirts with exclusive graphics that people actually want to wear. And if a participant completes three Runtastic half marathons in one year, they receive a special Trilogy medal commemorating their achievement. Last year over 800 participants “Trilogized” and several thousand ran at least two races. IT’S ALL DOWNHILL FROM HERE Another thing that really sets these races apart is the elevation change. While many races have a dreaded hill section, Runtastic races start at the top of a canyon and drop anywhere from 1,200 to 3,400 feet in elevation. After the success of the Timp Half in American Fork Canyon, David expanded to feature the unique beauty of other canyons like Dry Fork Canyon in Vernal and Provo Canyon. The downhill element encourages runners who may be hesitant to make the jump from a 5K or 10K to 13.1 miles. The mental edge helps, but with gravity on their side, 50–70% of runners report setting PRs on Runtastic courses. David ensures that every course meets his criteria so each race feels like its own singular experience. Creative signage along the way adds to the enjoyment, and a unique, artistic medal awaits at every finish line. The two Haunted Half events have the added fun of (almost) everyone running in costume, special photo backdrops, and costumed volunteers from local haunted attractions. RUNNING WITH GRATITUDE The Thankful 13, which runs every Thanksgiving morning, features David’s favorite element. At registration each participant can submit things they are thankful for. The staff choose their favorites and print them on signs that line the 13-mile course.

David says it inspires people not only to run, but to be thankful for things in their own lives, “It’s a great way for people to start Thanksgiving with so much gratitude in their hearts.” People love seeing their words so much that they will often pick up the signs and carry them above their heads proudly to the finish line. Working with prominent local charitable organizations is another important facet of Runtastic. The Mt. Nebo race partners with Addict to Athlete, an organization whose mission is to establish and maintain sobriety in recovering addicts by promoting healthy and lasting lifestyle changes through exercise. The Timp Half works with the Huntsman Cancer Institute to raise money for cancer research, and several other races partner with Kids on the Move, which helps families with children with developmental disabilities.

By creating one-of-a-kind events that feature the incredible natural beauty of Utah and partnering with local charities, David has created an ever-expanding community of runners around the state. Sadly, his father passed away in 2015, but David wants to carry on his legacy and his family’s tradition of running that’s brought him so much joy. The Benefits of Multisport Strengthening How to Do It Without Wasting Time By Rebecca Bennion, Ryan Stromberg, and Phil Pattison TOSH – The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital Anyone who’s spent much time swimming, biking, or running can attest to the repetitive nature of these sports. Lap after lap and mile after mile, our muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints go through the same range of motion. Safely building quantity through training allows our bodies to adapt to the prolonged repetition over the hours, days, and weeks spent in the pool, on the bike, and in running shoes. But even the most diligent athletes may find themselves recuperating from overuse injuries, despite their best efforts to gradually increase their time spent in multisport events such as swimming, cycling, and running. However, you can decrease the likelihood of common overuse injuries in these sports, by paying attention to proper mechanics, getting a correct bike fitting, using adequate training gear, stretching, and strength training. Today, we’ll focus on the healthy habit of strength training.

BENEFITS OF STRENGTH TRAINING Before anyone can throw out excuses as to why they can’t add strength work into their training schedule, we remind you of just a few of its benefits: 1. Don’t underestimate the role strong muscles play in performance. Stronger muscles produce more force, which makes us more efficient and faster. 2. Improving our training and race-day performance is the result of a more symmetrical body. Such balance involves the upper and lower portions of the body, the right and left sides, and the agonist and antagonist muscles. We reach our full force production potential when balance is achieved throughout muscle groups in each joint of the body. 3. Strength training increases time to exhaustion and leads to a higher lactate threshold point. Put simply, an athlete can swim, bike, or run further at a given intensity level than they could before. 4. Athletes who lift have enhanced protection from injury.

HOW TO STRENGTH TRAIN WITHOUT WASTING TIME Let’s face it—time is a concern. Swimming, biking, and running each require a significant time commitment. And if you’re training for a triathlon, how can you possibly train for each discipline and now add resistance training without sacrificing too much time away from other life priorities? Here are tips and exercises that will give you the best return for your efforts: 1. Perform exercises that work more than one joint at a time. Consider the difference between performing a leg extension versus a squat. A leg extension only works one joint, while a squat 18«

Training

¦¦¦

sportsguidemag.com

targets multiple joints in one exercise. Whether we’re swimming, cycling, or running, our bodies use multiple joints at a time. Strength train the same way. 2. Imitate movements and positioning to replicate your sport mechanics. Using the squat as an example again, there are a variety of ways to perform that exercise. Stance width can vary from narrow to wide and any position between. Consider your foot stance when you ride your bike. When doing squats, align yourself in that same width. 3. Keep the number of exercises you do to a minimum. We’re trying to do what’s best for our bodies in the least possible amount of time. Rather than continually adding exercises to your routine, alternate which exercises you do and focus on sets and reps. Changing it up will force your body to continually adapt and therefore become stronger. 4. Do upper and lower body exercises no matter what discipline you focus on the most. When we’re cycling and running, we use our lower body a lot, so it makes sense that we’d want to focus on building strength in our hips and legs. As a swimmer, it’s obvious that upper body strength is vital. But don’t forget that upper body strength is necessary for cyclist and runners, and that lower body strength is necessary for swimmers too. Whole body balance is vital to proper mechanics, stability, and power in each of these sports. 5. Include core exercises (abdominals and back) in your routine. What connects the upper body and lower body? What ensures that movements between the upper and lower body counterbalance one another? It’s your core. Performance suffers as force is lost because of a weak core. Exercises that improve core strength can be done daily if time permits.

SIX EXERCISES TO TRY To condition your body for multisport fitness, try the six exercises below. Find more illustrated exercises in the extended article at sportsguidemag.com. MINI BAND MARCH Do three sets of 10–15. Marches are a great exercise for your hip flexors, ankle dorsiflexors, and core. To perform the mini band march, place a resistance band around your feet with the feet shoulder-width apart and march in place by alternating your legs. Bring your knee to hip height while keeping a slight bend in the stance leg. As tension on the band increases, it will pull the marching leg toward midline so be sure to resist this as you drive your leg up by keeping your ¦¦¦

knees directly in front of your hips. The closer to your toes the band is, the more it will work your ankle dorsiflexors, but be cautious, since it makes it more challenging to keep the band from slipping off of your foot. Hip flexor and ankle dorsiflexor strength are important for all aspects of triathlon. RENEGADE ROW Do three set of 8-12.

they’re facing forward using the resistance band. For external rotation exercises, face the wall and rotate your hands toward the ceiling while holding the resistance band. Internal rotation strength is important for swimmers during the catch-and-pull phases of the stroke. It’s also important to work on strengthening your external rotators for stability throughout the stroke and avoiding poor posture and impingement in the front of the shoulder. T’S AND Y’S LYING ON A PHYSIOBALL Do three sets of 10. Begin by lying on the physioball on your stomach.

This exercise works your core, hip flexors, scapular stabilizers, chest, and triceps. Begin in the push-up position holding dumbbells, with the handles roughly parallel to the centerline of your body and about shoulder-width apart. While maintaining the push-up position, row your arm back. Emphasize pulling your scapula toward your spine and minimize trunk rotation as much as possible. Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the floor and be sure you’re stable before repeating on the other side. SIDE PLANK WITH TRUNK ROTATION AND PUSH-UP

Start in a side-plank position and add trunk rotations by bringing your arm from the top side under your body back to the starting position. For chest and arm work, particularly the triceps, a military push-up can be performed between each rotation. Swimmers, cyclists, and runners all benefit from this exercise. Trunk stability and rotation are important in swimming for clearance and maintaining proper mechanics to decrease stress to the shoulder, cyclists benefit from a strong upper body, and runners need stability through the core to maintain ideal mechanics. STANDING EXTERNAL ROTATION AND INTERNAL ROTATION WITH RESISTANCE BAND Do three sets of 15-20 for each exercise. For internal rotation exercises, start with your elbows bent to 90 degrees and your arms at shoulder height while facing away from the wall. Pull your hands down so

Raise your arms from the side of the ball until they’re parallel to the ground in the T position, being sure to squeeze your shoulder blades together during the movement. Next, raise your arms from the side of the ball at a 45-degree angle toward your head in the Y position. Scapular stability is important for positioning of the arm as you propel yourself through the water. Proper positioning will help improve the efficiency of the muscles and avoid excess stress to the anterior shoulder. FIRE HYDRANTS Do three sets of 10 on each side. This exercise works your hips and core. Begin in quadruped position (on your hands and knees) with your knees under your hips, your hands under your shoulders, and your back flat. Extend one hip as if performing a donkey kick, keeping your knee bent at 90 degrees. Keep your back flat throughout the movement; don’t fall into bad form by extending your back. Once your hip is extended, externally rotate your hip like a dog at a fire hydrant while keeping your pelvis as parallel to the ground as you can. Slowly lower the leg back down and repeat on the other side. Increase intensity by placing a mini band (resistance loop) around your legs just above the knees. This exercise will emphasize your hip extensors and rotators. Your hips, especially the rotators, steer your knees. Strong hip musculature will keep the knees in proper alignment, which improves efficiency and mechanics while reducing your risk of injury. Rebecca Bennion is the TOSH Running Program Coordinator. She graduated from Weber State University in 2004, earning a degree in Human Performance Management, with an emphasis in fitness and nutrition. Later she received her MBA, as well as additional professional certifications through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Phil Pattison is a licensed PTA in the physical therapy department at TOSH. Phil graduated from the Salt Lake Community College physical therapy assistant program and has worked in TOSH’s outpatient orthopedic physical therapy as a licensed PTA for 18 years. Ryan Stromberg is sports-certified physical therapist at TOSH. After graduation from physical therapy school, Ryan completed a sports residency at the University of Wisconsin. Ryan grew up in the pool and recently started a swim clinic at TOSH, using underwater video to help patients improve their movement pattern to reduce risk of injury.

A First Timer’s Experience Obstacle Course Racing By Nick Como

Photos courtesy of Spartan Race

I’m not a runner. It hurts my back, my ankles and my knees. Plus, I get bored. Give me a mountain bike and I’ll head 30 mph downhill on singletrack, thank you very much. Despite that I competed in Utah’s Spartan Super this year, and it’s all because of my coworker Jason. Jason became unexpectedly hooked on Spartan Races by spectating at a race his wife and son competed in. Inspired by the camaraderie of wild-eyed racers charging across open flames, he was all in—registering for races across the country, entering one each month of the year. Soon Jason was absent from post-work happy hours, opting instead for miles on the treadmill and deadlifts while the rest of us hoisted 12 ounces of beer at a time. As the Spartan season began to increase mileage, adding obstacles and difficulty, Jason got thinner, stronger, and more motivated. The rest of our small staff could not help but be inspired. What began with the idea of our staff attending the Eden, Utah race last August as a show of support resulted in 10 of us signing up to participate. Running eight miles, hauling ourselves over, through, and under 30 muddy obstacles, is one hell of a teambuilding exercise. How do you really train for some of the Spartan obstacles? I don’t have sandbags just laying around I can carry up a hill, buckets of rock to fill, monkey bars, or eight-foot walls to scale without drawing the attention of the neighbors—or sheriff. Most of our team went for trail runs and threw in push ups where possible. It would have to suffice, along with watching a few videos on the Spartan website that explained the obstacles and offered “tricks” to complete them. These videos mainly served as good comedy to email around, as the narrator is usually extra amped. We’d share photos of our workouts and “Spartan faces”—essentially yelling at the top of a training run and sharing a red-faced pic. Oh, did I mention if you cannot complete an obstacle on race day—or simply don’t want to—like, for instance, crawling under barbed wire, the penalty is 30 burpees? True story. Our strategy revolved around how to avoid to course marshals, in case they were militant about penalizing our failed attempts (they didn’t) instead of how to actually do a burpee or the obstacle itself. Hey, we paid for this! We can do what we want! 20«

The author lugging sandbags uphill

Come race day we donned our numbered headbands and timing chips, then climbed over a six-foot wall to get into the start area. One obstacle down! A loudspeaker blared the voice of a motivational speaker—probably the same guy from the training videos—to amp up participants with rally cries and fables of Spartans, to which the crowd would respond by yelling “Aroo!!!”. Not knowing these group chants a look of “What did we get ourselves into?” was painted on our confused faces. Mercifully the gates opened, and the race opened with a mile or so jog across the lower flanks of the ski resort, with a few small walls to scamper over. So far, so good. The trail then began to head uphill. As in directly uphill. I realized pretty quickly we were ascending a downhill mountain bike trail, which typically take advantage of a direct vertical drop. This one had nary a turn to it.

How You Can Become a Spartan This year’s Utah Super will be The author’s team held on Saturday, July 28 at Nordic Valley Ski Area in Eden, Utah. Expect a course of 8–10 miles with 24–29 obstacles. Aim for a morning start to avoid the heat of the day and dustier trails. You can enter solo, or better yet, build a team as we did. Team Sparty McSpartanFace is already taken, in case you were wondering.

Starting as a group of 10, we quickly split into groups of two or three based on our running speed. Or, more accurately, our scrambling and hiking, then crawling and panting, to slowly walking speed. I wound up teaming up with a strong hiker, Greg. What I lacked in speed, I was able to contribute a lending hand on climbing up some of the taller obstacles. The cargo net, and the Z-wall—basically a mini bouldering wall to traverse, played more to my “skill” set. We quickly came up with methods to help each other lift objects that needed to be carried, climb walls, ropes, and bars, continually pushing each other and contributing our different strengths.

One gym, Evolve Fitness (353 West 400 South), offers Spartanspecific training—something I wish I had discovered sooner.

Mile 2 and 3 quickly became mile 5 and 6. As the course began to wind downhill, the obstacles became less challenging. Soon we could hear the finish area. With about a mile to go, Jason’s son, Ian, happened to be in line at feature that had a bit of a wait where participations throw a javelin over a fence and into a hay bale. Having a few Spartans under his belt, Ian had a sketch in his mind about what obstacles were left in our way. It was just the encouragement we needed.

Climbing is big at Spartan Races

“All that’s left are the triple mud pits,” he yelled. He sounded excited, but I was not. Dunking my head into tepid filth sounded like an instant ear infection. Ian must have read my mind and pointed to a low spot where I could limbo my head under the barrier, but above the water. Thoroughly soaked, we squished and dripped our way to the finish line guarded by a small fire, and leapt over for the requisite photo-op. We gulped down our free finisher beer, then hit the line of hoses to clean up and changed into clean clothes to head to the Shooting Star Saloon for burgers. The first few tables were full of other Spartan racers who had the same idea, who greeted us with a loud “Aroo!” as the door shut behind us. We half-heartedly waved back. I guess we weren’t joining the tribe after all.

Leaping over fire near the finish line

Would I do a Spartan again? I never thought I would do one in the first place, but there I was, with photos to prove it. So, maybe. The shared training experience absolutely brought our team closer together and swapping war stories from the course was the top office discussion for at least a week. That’s worth at least considering it…in a few months. I just won’t be yelling “Aroo!” anytime soon. ¦¦¦

Nick Como escaped the skyscrapers of NYC for the tall peaks of the Wasatch. Climber, skier, canyoneer, mountain biker, and lover of food. Just don’t think of offering him pizza with pineapple on it.

WHAT IS THE KETOGENIC DIET?

By Melissa McGibbon

The result is a build-up of byproducts from the body breaking down fat for energy, called ketones, that occur when carbohydrate intake is low. This causes body fat weight-loss, hence all the rage surrounding the Ketogenic Diet. HOW IT WORKS To understand how it works, you’ll need a crash course on how the human body gets energy. Human bodies are fueled by glucose (blood sugar) that we get from consuming foods containing carbohydrates, such as fruit, potatoes, bread, and sweets. If our blood sugar levels drop significantly, we’re likely to get dizzy and shaky. When your body is deprived of essential carbohydrate intake, anything less than 50 grams per day, the liver goes into overdrive because you don’t have that carbohydrate-made glucose for energy. The liver then becomes the sole provider of glucose to feed your organs—especially the brain. Since the human brain cannot directly use fat for energy, it needs a backup source when the carbs are gone.

have enough glucose for energy and has to burn stored fats instead. Despite the serious implications of this weight-loss fad, Keto converts are removing carbs (including fruits) from their diets and focusing instead on healthy fats such as avocados, eggs, meats, and nuts in order to see quick results. If this sounds eerily familiar to the Atkins diet, that’s because it is—Atkins is a version of the Keto Diet. According to the Journal of American Medicine, when looking at head-to-head studies comparing low-carb diets to other kinds of diets, weight loss on a very low-carb diet can be a little more dramatic in the short term, but by the one-year mark, all diets perform equally miserably. HEALTH BENEFITS According to some research articles published on the US National Library of Medicine, there are many benefits to the Ketogenic Diet, such as weight loss, blood sugar control, mental focus, increased energy, normalized hunger, lower insulin levels, and even acne reduction. However, long-term results remain to be seen and many other articles suggest the downsides far outweigh the upsides. Image licensed by Ingram Image

You may have heard of the Paleo Diet and the Whole30 Program, but have you heard of the Keto Diet? Despite being introduced in 1924, it’s recently gained popularity as the latest trending diet and has people ditching carbs for fats. The Keto (short for ketogenic) Diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet, in which the body produces ketones in the liver to use as energy instead of carbohydrates.

No carbs means your brain is running on ketones, produced by the liver using fatty acids from your food or body fat. The ketones are released into the bloodstream—this is the body switching gears to initiate ketogenesis—survival mode. Essentially, it fools the body into thinking it’s starving, causing the body to go into a metabolic state called ketosis, which is what happens when your body doesn’t 22«

SIDE EFFECTS In addition to disappointing long-term outcomes, the Keto Diet can come with a number of side effects that range from unpleasant to eeek! Research by The Journal of American Medicine reveals that side effects may include weak bones and stress fractures, headaches, moodiness, memory loss, increased risk of disease, slowed metabolism, and the dreaded “Keto Breath,” which is the result of the low/no-carb diet that causes certain chemicals to be released from one’s breath when the body is in ketosis. “Keto Flu,” is the oft-used term Keto dieters use to explain what they’re experiencing when their bodies go through the initial transition phase, which is characterized by fatigue, dizziness, poor sleep, difficulty with exercise, and constipation.

WHAT TO EAT ON A KETO DIET Sticking to a strict 5% carbohydrate allowance might be tough, but here’s how it goes: Fats & Oils: Get your fat from natural sources like meat and nuts. Supplement with saturated and monounsaturated fats like coconut oil, butter, and olive oil. Protein: Stick with organic, pasture-raised, and grass-fed meat where possible. Most meats don’t have added sugar so they can be consumed in moderate quantity. Vegetables: Fresh or frozen doesn’t matter. Eat above ground vegetables. Think leafy greens.

Despite the disconcerting and substantial adverse health effects, the Keto Diet may still appeal to those who are willing to give up strawberries for extra cheese. Lots and lots of cheese. And while there’s really no arguing how truly magnificent this world is with cheese in it, it just seems bananas to give up bananas.

Nuts and Seeds: The fattier the better, but only in moderation. Nuts and seeds are on the yes list. Beverages: Water. That’s it. Photo Credit: © istock.com/nikamata

Dairy: It’s okay to eat it, but you have to consume full-fat dairy. So long 1% milk.

Your daily diet should consist of: 60-75% calories from fat 15-30% calories from protein 5-10% calories from carbs
