STARTING LINE FROM THE EDITOR There’s nothing like the thrill of going someplace new. Last summer I skipped across the pond to Switzerland to experience its newly built mountain biking trails. The towering peaks, kind people, and of course, the biking, wowed me. This summer, cheap airfare is taking me back across the Atlantic to Ireland, but I’ll also be exploring destinations throughout Utah. Whether you’re traveling far or kicking it close to home this summer, our big Straycation Issue has something for you.

Bike or Hike Within Earshot of Utah’s Best Summer Music Festivals By Nick Como

Utah summers offer many blessings: endless singletrack biking trails, rivers and lakes to cool off in, high peaks to hike, and towers to climb in every corner of the state. (We hear there are other temples where blessings can be found indoors too.) The summer music scene is one of Utah’s best gifts, and the shows are typically affordable—or completely free— and have the bonus of BYOB venues with nearby outdoor activities to enjoy before getting your groove on. Try these five outdoor summer music events paired with hiking, biking, and more. SNOWBASIN BLUES, BREWS & BBQ

on the plush lawn too. Just wear sunscreen as it can be hot and sunny without an umbrella. In addition to the BBB events, the TrouBeliver Fest comes to Snowbasin August 3–4, a new singer-songwriter festival with a more intimate format than the typical festival.

DEER VALLEY MUSIC FESTIVAL WITH THE UTAH SYMPHONY

Pre-show bike ride; post-show nosh Dates: Now–August 11, 2018 Schedule: deervalleymusicfestival.org

One of the state’s crown jewels of performing arts, the Utah Symphony makes its summer home on the lower flanks of Deer Valley at the Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater. Seeing world-class musicians perform outdoors in the mountains is a must-do at least once a summer.

Every Sunday, Snowbasin’s base area pumps up the volume with FREE music, excellent BBQ food ranging from burgers or brisket to loaded fries, plus cold local beers on tap—hence the name.

The event includes activities and games for the kids: Spider Jump, climbing wall, and a playground. Chairs and umbrellas are allowed in the rear of the venue, but good old-fashioned blankets work great 10«

Each show features three acts made up of local and nationally touring artists. Past performers include Andy Frasco, Los Lobos, and Big Sam’s Funky Nation. The festivities kick off around noon and run until 5:30 p.m. making the ‘Basin a perfect way to finish out the weekend. Locals in the know claim their spot on the lawn and head up the Needles Gondola for a hike or bike ride, or hit some cross-country riding on Middle/East Fork Loop or the easier Green Pond Trail.

Before the show, especially on weekends, participate in Deer Valley Resort’s summer activities: lift-served sightseeing, hiking, mountain biking, and stand up paddleboarding at Pebble Beach.

Time your adventure to arrive back at the base the moment gates open and snag a primo spot. Low-back chairs are allowed, as well as blankets, and BYOB’ing a spread of food and wine pairs perfectly with the mountain air. Pro tip: Order a Deer Valley Picnic Bag ahead of time and pick it up on your way toward the viewing area for a high-quality, effortless concert eats.

Hit up the downtown Caputos or Harmons and load up on charcuterie before heading up the hill, or plan ahead the night before to put together a mini-feast as once you are in the gates—you’re in—there is no re-entry. It’s customary to line up outside in the early afternoon to be one of the first in to stake a claim on a tract of lawn. I know, I’ve been that guy. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail is nearby and depending on where you park and how much you have to carry, you can stretch your legs a bit on the way to the show. Another smart tactic is to arrive midafternoon, snag a rockstar parking spot, and head up for a trail run or spin on the BST. You’ll have an excuse for over-imbibing during the show, and have an easier exit—just don’t forget the DD.

If you have the quads for it, pedaling up is a great workout and a smart way to beat the exit traffic as well. Your reward is a free bike valet, courtesy of Salt Lake Bicycle Collective. Pack wisely though! This summer’s lineup includes Galactic, Trombone Shorty, Gary Clark Jr, and much, much more. If you’re favorite show sold out too fast to snag tickets, an outdoorsy alternative is taking a quick, yet steep hike, up to the Living Room. Enjoy cozy seating and some distant tunes paired with a sunset over Salt Lake City.

With Park City’s new bike share system you can get to the show on two wheels no matter if you parked at the distant transit center or just left your whip at home for the evening. Park City life is on full display as groups of friends and families roll off the trails and into each of these locations—just in time to catch some tunes and the sunset. If you are wondering, yes you can squeeze a boozy beverage, wedge of cheese, and some cured meats into a Camelback to literally go from trail to tunes. Bonus points for remembering flip flops!

The Ogden version has improved each year and is headlined this summer by Flaming Lips. The venue is easily accessed by FrontRunner, which is included in your ticket price. The Ogden Amphitheatre concert venue is conveniently located on 25th Street, a location that will change your opinion of Ogden—check out Alleged. Riding your bike is an option too; the Series offers a free bike valet. Salt Lake City’s Twilight moves to Gallivan Center this summer, featuring five shows in the heart of downtown. The goal of the move is to take all of the best aspects of the Pioneer Park version and less of the cluster that overwhelmed the park and atmosphere. Take TRAX or ride a GREENbike so you don’t have to worry about locking up yours. Then ride and pub crawl Main Street and 300 South after the show.

3-Day Getaway

Exploring Mesa Verde Country

By Jenny Willden

Exploring Mesa Verde's Balcony House

Explore ancient cliff dwellings and see how Ancestral Puebloans not only survived in the desert—but thrived—on a weekend getaway to Mesa Verde Country. A 5.5-hour drive from Salt Lake City, many try to hit the area’s highlights in a day, but staying all weekend lets you explore beyond the national park. Make your basecamp Cortez, Colorado, the gateway town to the ruins of Mesa Verde and Hovenweep, and a hotspot for food, events, and even a bit of nightlife. Follow this itinerary to discover the prehistoric sights and take in the Cortez culture of today. Find more options at mesaverdecountry.com.

Mesa Verde Country’s free Ancient Voices (mesaverdecountry.com/ ancient-voices) podcast driving tour. It relays great information about Cortez, the many archaeological attractions, and local history. Tour Mesa Verde National Park Stop first at the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center, and wander the exhibits to learn about Ancestral Puebloan culture before heading into the park. Purchase tickets here for the popular Cliff Palace, Balcony House, or Long House tours, which must be done in person up to two days in advance.

DAY 1: CORTEZ EATS & BREWS

Experience Small Town Nightlife Cortez may be small, but that doesn’t mean it shuts down early. Just off Main Street, stop by WildEdge Brewing for beer paired with live music. Our favorite was a sour saison aged with local Palisade peaches, and the single barrel was so popular that similar ones are now menu fixtures.

DAY 2: CLIFF DWELLINGS & WORLD-CLASS TRAILS

Just eight miles from the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park, Cortez is the cultural center of Mesa Verde Country and within striking distance of ancient cliff dwellings and beautiful farm country. Eat Breakfast Start your day at Spruce Tree Espresso House, a shop tucked in a cute, colorful house on Cortez’s Main Street that serves creative coffee concoctions such as Mexican Mochas and Lavender Lattes. Fill up with a hearty breakfast burrito or a pesto asiago bagel. Listen & Learn While you’re cruising from Cortez to Mesa Verde, listen to Episode 1 of 14«

Drive from Salt Lake City to Cortez for dinner at one of Main Street’s restaurants. From Thai to Mexican, you’ll find nearly every type of cuisine, but top picks are The Farm Bistro’s Colorado-centric menu and Main Street Brewery and Restaurant.

If you have time for only one cliff dwelling tour, choose Balcony House. This adventurous one-hour excursion is not for the height averse, as you must climb a 32-foot ladder to enter the dwelling. Next, a ranger describes life for cliff dwellers who lived here before you crawl through a 12-foot tunnel. Climb a ladder up a 60-foot rock wall to exit on top of the mesa.

Balcony House touring

Drive the Mesa Top Loop Road Follow this six-mile scenic loop road around the mesa top to easy walking trails, overlooks of Ancestral Puebloan homes and villages, and archeological sites like the Sun Temple. Biker Bonus Break out your mountain bike for an afternoon at Phil’s World Trail System, one of Colorado’s best rides. Explore 60 miles of trails just six miles from Cortez with all-levels riding on slickrock, singletrack flow with Mesa Verde Mountain views. If you’ve got skills, try Rib Cage Trail, a fast, fun rollercoater-y ride.

DAY 3: HOVENWEEP NATIONAL MONUMENT

cinnamon rolls, homemade New York-style bagels, plus sweet and savory hand pies. Take some for the drive to Hovenweep. Explore Hovenweep National Monument Between 1200 and 1300, prehistoric tribes constructed homes and sacred sites on today’s Utah-Colorado border in what is now Hovenweep National Monument. Follow a long paved and dirt road 45 miles from Cortez to reach the ruins of six villages built around the same time as Mesa Verde. Start at the Square Tower Group, an easy walk from the modern visitor’s center. This 1.5-mile trail loops through serene desert past Hovenweep Castle and dramatic, multistory towers perched on the canyon’s rim.

Explore 20 miles of surrounding desert to see petroglyph panels and other preserved stone towers. Though we know little about the tribes who built and abandoned these structures, simply wandering amidst them inspires appreciation for the people who perservered in these harsh desert landscapes. From here, drive six hours back to Salt Lake City and make it home in time for dinner.

Summer Festivals & Events

Find your nature. Protect your adventure.

Pair your outdoor adventures with a Cortez summer event. Cortez Farmer’s Market- Saturday mornings until October 27 Take home fresh Colorado peaches and roasted peppers from this weekly market on Main Street. THE CONTINENTAL CROWN

Visiting Glacier National Park

By Melissa McGibbon

Glacier National Park is mystifyingly beautiful. Its dramatic, saw-toothed aretes and ancient glaciers jut high in the sky while unspoiled expanses of land and lakes roamed by wild creatures sprawl out below. It’s hard to believe such enchanting wilderness actually exists. THE CROWN OF THE CONTINENT No doubt early explorer George Bird Grinnell felt the same. He made it his purpose to get the area made a national park so its natural riches could be shared with the people and protected from land developers. Happily, Grinnell and his consortium of fellow conservationists were successful in their endeavor; on May 11, 1910, President Taft officially created Glacier as the nation’s seventh national park. In the 108 years since, it has become a top tourist destination, now welcoming almost three million people each year. It’s among the most Instagrammed places in the United States and most pinned locations on Pinterest in the world. Often referred to as The Crown of the Continent because of its role in the collective ecosystem, Glacier National Park is considered the headwater of the North American Continent. BEFORE THEY’RE GONE The Continental Divide and Northern Divide converge at Triple Divide Peak, which sends water—mostly snowmelt—in three directions, flowing all the way to the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans. Glacier National Park is so named for the 150 or so 7,000-year-old glaciers that dominated the landscape in the late 1800s. However, these relics of a bygone era are quickly vanishing.

Only 37 glaciers remain and have lost as much as 85% of their mass in the last half century due to climate change. Plan a visit this summer to see as much of the remaining glaciers as possible. At their current rate of melt, the glaciers will be gone in decades. On the bright side, thanks to its vast frontier of over a million acres along with conservation efforts, the region has maintained nearly its entire original plant and animal species since its modern-age discovery and is a refuge for grizzly bears, gray wolves, Canada lynx, bull trout, and other wildlife that are threatened elsewhere. BE ON YOUR BEST BEARHAVIOR Speaking of bears, Glacier National Park is a great place for grizzly bear sightings—ideally from afar. Everyone wants to see a bear—no one wants to meet a bear. To that end, the National Park Service recommends staying bear-aware by traveling in groups and making noise on hikes to avoid surprising them. Encounters with one of the estimated 300 that live in the park are not all that uncommon, but should be avoided, not sought. Remember, the bears won’t be the ones who have to change their pants in the case of a meet and greet. The only bear in the park that everyone should absolutely pursue is the Huckleberry Bear Claw at the Polebridge Mercantile and Bakery near Bowman Lake. Hailed as the best pastry in the West, this claw-shaped confection is well worth the detour. GLACIER GO-TOS Other things not to miss during a visit include: hiking the Grinnell Glacier overlook, which leads to outstanding views of the opaque turquoise water in Grinnell Lake; watching the sunrise at Two ¦¦¦

Med Lake; kayaking or paddleboarding on Lake McDonald, which was carved out by a glacier and is the largest lake in the park; and driving Going-To-The-Sun-Road, if it’s open. AN ENGINEERING FEAT Going-To-The-Sun is one of the park’s standout features. The 50mile, two-lane highway was completed in 1932 and spans the width of the park bifurcating the east and west. The road crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass and passes through almost every type of terrain in the park, from glacial lakes and cedar forests in the lower valleys to windswept alpine tundra at its peak elevation of 6,646 feet. PACK YOUR PASSPORT If Going-To-The-Sun-Road’s closed, use it as an excuse to loop around the park and visit Canada for a couple of hours. The drive from West Glacier to Fernie to East Glacier is spectacularly scenic and provides ample opportunities for wildlife viewing and other points of interest along the the way, such as Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park or Glacier’s Many Glacier and Saint Mary Lake. This is also a good way to avoid crowd maneuvering and bumper-to-bumper traffic. WHERE TO STAY Part of the Glacier National Park experience is staying at one of the historic lodges, some of which are registered as National Historic Landmarks. Just as soon as GNP gained its status as a national park, large numbers of visitors descended upon the glacial haven. To accommodate the crowds, the Great Northern Railway built a series of chalets and hotels designed to mimic mountain lodges in Switzerland. These designs, combined with the use of natural materials, were dubbed “parkitecture.”

flights into Kalispell, Montana are under two hours. No matter which route travelers to Glacier National Park choose, they are sure to be impressed. It’s simply one of the most awe-inspiring places on the planet and a must-see for anyone with a travel bucket list. SUMMER EVENTS/FESTIVALS Planning a Glacier getaway? Pair it with these summer events. VOLUNTEER VACATIONS

Photo Redit: Kurt Buddle for Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Do Good on These 5 Utah Trips By Heather Hamblin

Volunteer to walk dogs at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Utah’s impressive array of national parks, national forests, state parks, and other public lands means there’s no shortage of outdoor adventure vacation options. But what if you want to be more than a tourist? Use some of your vacation time to better your home state by spending time outdoors volunteering with these five organizations. 1. SOUTHERN UTAH + BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SANCTUARY Sign Up: bestfriends.org/sanctuary/visit-our-utah-sanctuary Heading to southern Utah to explore Zion National Park, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, or Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument? While in the area, volunteer at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab: the largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals in the country. For nearly 35 years, this unique shelter has saved animals that might otherwise be considered unadoptable, and providing them with a place to heal and find forever homes. Dogs, cats, birds, horse, pigs, and other barnyard animals come from all over to this sanctuary, and you can help with their care. Sign up in advance and come build enclosures, clean pens, and love on rescue animals. Spend a few days feeding, walking, grooming, and socializing with these animals in need, and your vacation will feel more meaningful – and fuzzy. 2. MOAB + MOAB SOLUTIONS Sign Up: moab-solutions.org/volunteer-vacation.html Nearby Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and La Sal National Forest, make Moab a mecca for hiking, biking, 18«

climbing, and numerous other outdoor activities. But evergrowing crowds can have a negative impact on the land and natural resources. Moab Solutions aims to reduce the damage by cleaning public spaces and helping others that might be down on their luck. The organization also helps Moab locals who are experiencing homelessness by connecting them with volunteers. Sign up to volunteer and find yourself enjoying public lands while helping protect them. Clear trash from red rock desert, trails, and streams, or assist in trail restoration work. 3. ALL OVER UTAH + NATIONAL ABILITY CENTER’S SPLORE OUTDOOR ADVENTURES Sign Up: splore.org/volunteer or portal.discovernac.org/volunteerreg Help people with different abilities experience outdoor activities that may otherwise seem inaccessible to them while enjoy an adventure yourself. Team up with an organization determined to prove that people of all abilities are able to enjoy the outdoors. The Splore Outdoor Adventures Program of the National Ability Center designs and guides trips for families and individuals that need special considerations to enjoy the outdoors. Be a cook for a river trip, set up camp in the desert, or simply carry a pack on a hike for someone who can’t. These trips take you all around Utah from rafting on the Colorado River in Moab to yurt camping and stand up paddleboarding in the Uintas. For a shorter time commitment, join in on 4-6-hour Salt Lake adventures.

5. SAN RAFAEL SWELL, ZION, DARK CANYON + WILDERNESS VOLUNTEERS Sign Up: wildernessvolunteers.org For a do-good trip requiring little planning on your part, join up with Wilderness Volunteers. This organization makes planning and executing your volunteer vacation a breeze. Wilderness Volunteers teams up with the National Park Service, BLM, Forest Service, and US Fish and Wildlife Service on special projects. For $299, you can go on a weeklong trip to improve wild lands that includes food, guides, and supplies for the volunteer project. Group size is limited to 12, so you can go alone and make new friends, or form your own group for one of the projects.

4. UINTA AND FISHLAKE NATIONAL FORESTS + U.S. FOREST SERVICE Sign Up: fs.fed.us/working-with-us/volunteers Partner with thousands of volunteers around the country to preserve our public lands by building trails, managing a campground, taking inventory of wildlife and plants with field researchers, or repairing bridges, footpaths, or signage.

Current projects include removing invasive plants in the San Rafael Swell or Zion National Park, restoring Escalante River tributaries, surveying remote parts of the Dark Canyon Wilderness, and assisting the BLM with a variety of tasks on the Grand Gulch-Cedar Mesa Plateau. Whether you clean up the forest or cuddle a pup, these five volunteer vacations are sure to make you feel good about doing good—while still enjoy the outdoor adventures you love.

Join forces in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest to restore timberland, or head to Fishlake National Forest to help protect the habitat of the native sage grouse. Projects with the Forest Service can be vast and far-reaching, but you can join the efforts for just a day on your own, or bring some friends and make a weeklong trip of helping out and enjoying public spaces.

ALPEN ASPIRATIONS

Mountain Biking Around Switzerland By Jenny Willden

Riding the Corviglia Flow Trail above Lake St. Moritz.

Happy cows dressed with clanging bells, brimming pots of fondue cheese, the world’s best milk chocolate, idyllic towns set against lofty peaks—Switzerland lives up to all its dazzling stereotypes. But these striking mountains aren’t just for the cows. This small country is quietly building a new claim to fame: mountain biking. CHANGING WITH THE LAND A fast-shifting climate means Switzerland’s iconic, snow-capped peaks are more often bare, leaving this famed wintersports capital to grapple with what to do as winter seasons grow shorter. Capitalizing on the mountain biking boom, ski regions are retrofitting chairlifts and cable cars to transport bikes and riders up mountains to newly carved singletrack trails. But is the riding worth the hype? As a newer mountain biker, I traveled from Salt Lake City to Switzerland’s southeastern Graubünden region to see if any rider could truly take on these trails, and to learn if this country is truly the next best place to ride a mountain bike. RIDING THE RAILS Bound from Zurich, our vibrant red locomotive chugged past turquoise lakes where families splashed and settled on the shore, across storybook bridges, and through 22 mountain tunnels numbered by tall white banners. Landlocked by France and Italy, Switzerland is a tiny nation the size of New Jersey but feels bigger when traveling by train. We disembarked in the Graubünden town of Celerina, a gateway to the flourishing mountain biking scene. Here we explored the towns of Engadin, Lenzerheide, and Flims— all famous ski destinations now going big with biking. BIKING IN SWITZERLAND In Switzerland, cable cars shuttle bikers up the Alps, mountain huts 20«

welcome those eager for a lunch break, and riders sip on tiny mugs of strong espresso at the end of every lap. While this makes the riding here a dream, what I loved best is Switzerland’s trail diversity. Both expert and easier options are found at each destination, even many families can ride together. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be challenged. Tough, singletrack trails rival Utah’s big mountains and have bonus amenities like huts with fancy eats and bike-friendly basecamps for stashing your ride. 4 MUST-RIDE SWISS MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS When in southeastern Switzerland, don’t miss these epic rides. 1. Corviglia Flow Trail, Engadin-St. Moritz Where to Stay: Cresta Palace- Safely store, repair, and clean your bike in this hotel’s bike garage. Delicious Swiss breakfast included. The most iconically Swiss trail, this wide-bermed lap is the stuff downhillers dream about. Golden brown dairy cows graze on the hillside as you exit the cable car to begin the ride. Drop into the smooth, flowing path, speeding past mountain peaks and turquoise-hued Lake St. Moritz to end at a Alto Bar—a cable car turned modern mountain eatery. With a pitch that isn’t too intense for rookies, and lappable for pros, it’s a ride your whole crew can take on. 2. Crap La Tretscha Viewpoint, Lenzerheide Where to Stay: Hotel Schweizerho- Wellness oasis with salwater pool and Alpine region’s largest hotel hammam (Middle Eastern spa ritual). Set deep in the forest, this woodland path climbs and winds up to 180-degree valley and mountain views over 4.2 miles to Crap La Tretscha. It’s one of Lenzerheide’s best lookouts, and this crosscountry ride works up a serious sweat. Rest on the benches before racing downhill and looping back to Lenzerheide. ¦¦¦

features banked turns, humps, and jumps spread over 4.7 miles. A mix of natural dirt, rock, and winding wooden boardwalk trails keep things interesting as you bomb through forests back to the base. Beginners can skip the big drops and obstacles and take on easy rollers and less-steep berms instead. Lap it a few times, and don’t worry if it rains. A new trail surface provides good grip even when wet.

MOUNTAIN HUT HIKING When you need a break from biking, hike a lush, forested path up to Lenzerheide’s Alp Fops, a 140-year-old crooked, wooden mountain hut that’s been serving hungry skiers, bikers, and hikers for generations. Take a patio seat and pair the grazing cow views with the Malär Family’s heaping plates of Fopserbrettli, a Graubünden specialty of local meat, cheese, and bread.

3. Flims Forest, Flims Where to Stay: Hotel Cresta- Indoor-outdoor spa with saunas, multiple pools, and a relaxation patio for unwinding post-ride. Drawn from a fairy tale, this entrancing path showcases lakes that mysteriously drain and refill, and leads to one of Switzerland’s best swimming lakes—a sparkling blue-green beauty called Lake Cauma. Bike around Cauma and back through dense, verdant trees to a trailside oasis, Restaurant Conn.

GETTING THERE Direct flights to Zurich are not available (yet) from the Beehive State, but airfare deals mean it’s cheaper to reach this biking mecca than you’d think. Take a connecting flight to Zurich for under $1,000—even in the summer season. Once landed, board a train to Celerina to access the town of Engadin. Ride Switzerland’s PostAuto buses to quickly reach Lenzerheide and Flims. Biking season ends mid-October. Learn more at myswitzerland.com.

Stop for from-scratch pear ravioli on the patio then pedal to Il Spir, a 1,300-foot tall viewing platform that highlights a natural wonder, the Swiss Grand Canyon. The 180-degree platform overlooks the raging river as ruby red trains go by. 4. Runca Trail, Flims Billed as one of Europe’s longest flow trails, this downhill funfest

Escape the Summer Crowds 4 Lesser-known Utah Recreation Areas & Camping Sites By Don Macavoy

BLM land campsite in San Rafael Swell.

Utah’s national parks are stunning, but come summer these spectacular destinations are flooded with tourist crowds. And when it comes to camping, the same goes for accessible, local favorites like the Cottonwood and American Fork Canyons. Just try getting a campsite at the Spruces on a Friday night. These days, those desiring a little solitude have to look beyond the summer classics for crowd-free hiking and a quiet nights under the stars. But one great perk of the Beehive State is that popular, breathtaking natural formations typically have something equally amazing surrounding them, and most tourists just pass them by. Instead of battling crowds and fighting for a campsite, try these four Utah alternatives for a less hectic summer getaway! INSTEAD OF ARCHES NATIONAL PARK, TRY SAN RAFAEL SWELL

When you want to escape Moab’s hustle and bustle but still visit the desert, San Rafael Swell features some of the most secluded backcountry experiences Utah has to offer. While it's a wellknown area, the Swell's expansive size allows visitors to spread out comfortably. Just outside of Green River, there are dozens of slot canyons hidden among the deep, remote areas of the Colorado Plateau. Ding and Dang Canyons offer a wonderful loop hike through sinuous slots, and Little Wild Horse Canyon is a popular, easier alternative in the same area. Upper and Lower Black Box is a beautiful hike through narrow river canyons similar to Zion’s Narrows. 24«

On the other side of the Swell, Wedge Overlook gives you a sweeping look at the deeply carved landscape. Be sure to check out the Swinging Bridge, an amazing suspension bridge built in 1937 that you can walk across for a view of the San Rafael River. Where to Camp Camping in the Swell is primarily on BLM land, making it free, primitive, and mostly dispersed. The dirt roads that traverse the area are full of great pull-offs for camping. Do try to use an established site so you can prevent disturbing the landscape further. If visiting Little Wild Horse or Ding and Dang slots, find a site along Behind the Reef Road. When at the Wedge, pitch your tent in the San Rafael Bridge Campground and access amenities like fire rings and picnic tables.

INSTEAD OF JORDANELLE RESERVOIR, TRY EAST CANYON STATE PARK

Looking for a great weekend getaway just an hour from Salt Lake? East Canyon State Park is the perfect place for camping, hiking, and boating outside busier reservoirs in the Wasatch. Take out fishing boats, kayaks, or stand up paddleboards on East Canyon Reservoir for a relaxing day on the water. Or learn about Utah history by trekking on the Mormon Pioneer Trail. You may even see mule deer, elk, and moose. Where to Camp Camping options at East Canyon include yurts, cabins, primitive sites, and RV hookups, meaning there’s something for everyone. Most unique, the Big Rock Campground offers a structure specifically for hammock camping. Bring your crew and your ¦¦¦

hammocks to string up, or rent one on the cheap from the park and sleep in style under the stars.

INSTEAD OF ZION NATIONAL PARK, TRY SNOW CANYON STATE PARK

Looking for Zion scenery without the shuttle lines and crowded overlooks? Snow Canyon State Park has a lot to offer. Just 20 minutes outside of St. George, this park boasts incredible red rock formations, canyoneering, climbing, and miles of hiking and biking trails. Find beginner-friendly hikes to scenic overlooks, trails through ancient lava flows, and even petrified sand dunes. The Three Ponds Trail gives you a taste of slot canyons, weaving through amazing, narrow corridors and around sandstone potholes that fill with water after heavy rain. As you watch the sun set over this amazing landscape you may see wildlife like foxes, roadrunners, or coyotes who come out to feed at dusk. Where to Camp Camp surrounded by Navajo sandstone cliffs and an impressive view of the night sky at the park’s campground. Offers 17 primitive tent sites and 14 RV sites with hookups so no matter how you travel, you’re covered. Snow Canyon has a $6 per car entry fee, and campsite reservations are recommended.

INSTEAD OF THE COTTONWOOD CANYONS, TRY THE UINTA MOUNTAINS

Bald Mountain in the Uintas.

Easily access some great hikes in the area from here, including the simple Fehr Lake Trail and the more challenging Bald Mountain hike to a 12,000-foot peak with incredible views. The Ruth Lake Trail offers easy day hiking and great climbing opportunities. Where to Camp Just off the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway, Moosehorn Lake’s campground is right on the water and has picnic tables and fire rings. At 10,400 ft. elevation, it’s a great place to escape the summer heat of the valley, but be prepared for chilly nights! Nearby Mirror Lake Campground also offers plenty of sites as well as an amphitheater programs on weekends.

Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are overrun with hikers and bikers eager to spend their summer weekends away from the city, but if you put in just a little more drive time you can experience some of the best mountain wilderness areas in northern Utah. For a great weekend of family activities just 2.5 hours from Salt Lake City, check out Moosehorn Lake. Only non-motorized boats are allowed, so this is the perfect place to canoe, kayak, or stand up paddleboard in peace. ¦¦¦

Glamping Guide

Conestoga Ranch at Bear Lake.

9 Camping Destinations with a Touch of Luxury By Molly Andersen

Sleeping under the stars—on a pillow-top king-size bed. Taking a break from technology—but not from flush toilets. For a summertime getaway that combines outdoor adventure and delightful (if not decadent) accommodations, “glamping” offers the best of both worlds. Treat yourself (or a group of friends) to a glamping trip at these scenic Utah locations. Located in spectacular natural surroundings, often just steps from world-class biking, hiking, and rafting opportunities, they provide the chance to go hard all day, then relax and rejuvenate at night...without the stuffiness of a traditional hotel. IF YOU GO

Most glamping sites offer the all-inclusive convenience of a traditional hotel: linens, firewood, and refrigerators or coolers are typically part of the package. Additionally, most have a BYO policy on adult beverages, so you can enjoy a cold beer or a glass of wine as you relax by the campfire (perhaps paired with a resort-provided s’more). Pack a pair of earplugs to shut out traffic noise, as many sites are located along or near busy roads. And don’t forget insect repellent and high-proof sunscreen: canvas walls don’t offer the same protection from mosquitoes and UV rays. Capitol Reef Resort (Torrey): Warmly lit canvas teepees welcome visitors to this cozy campground. Open June through September, each is outfitted in a traditional Western style— with the additions of a pillow-top king bed and flat-screen TV. Llama lovers, take note: You can book a day hike in the company of several of the critters (they’ll even carry your lunch). capitolreefresort.com Conestoga Ranch (Garden City): In Northern Utah, Bear Lake (Called “the Caribbean of the Rockies” for its turquoise waters) 26«

invites watersports, fishing, and relaxing on its white sand beaches. Glamping options at nearby Conestoga Ranch are open seasonally May–September and range from the honeymoon-worthy Royal Tent Suite to rustic, but cozy, covered wagons. The open-air Campfire Grill offers gourmet cuisine and adult beverages with views of Bear Lake. On-site amenities like free cruiser bikes and a game room keep the whole family entertained. Day-trip to nearby Minnetonka Cave or Paris Ice Cave to explore stalactites, stalagmites, and year-round ice... a welcome escape from scorching summer temperatures. conestogaranch.com Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort (Mt. Carmel): Located just east of Zion National Park, this 4000-acre ranch boasts a network of trails from its days as a frontier logging camp that are perfect for exploring on horseback. Not the equestrian type? Explore with a wagon tour instead, possibly capped with an authentic Dutch oven dinner. Snug, comfy canvas tents form a circle of six: a great size for small-group camping. zionponderosa.com BaseCamp 37° (Kanab): Each of four cabin tents has its own take on the Grand Staircase-Escalante landscape, offering a balance of privacy and proximity to the shared amenities. Pack your cooler for the nightly BYO-Bar, where guests enjoy their potent potables around a campfire or over a bocce game. Solar arrays provide each tent with enough juice to power lamps and phone chargers. basecamp37.net ¦¦¦

Under Canvas

Under Canvas (Moab and Virgin): Minutes away from Arches and Zion National Parks, these rustic (and technology-free) tents are the perfect basecamp for exploring nearby trails. Moab Expedition packages include lodging, meals, and adventures from whitewater rafting to an aerial tour; Zion Expedition itineraries include canyoneering and a helicopter tour. While yoga classes are ubiquitous at glamping grounds, the four-day Yogascapes Retreat (September 13-16, Zion Under Canvas) includes restorative sessions, hikes for every fitness level, and plenty of time for relaxation and reflection. undercanvas.com Broken Spur Inn (Torrey): This must be the place! For a pioneerstyle getaway (though in much more comfort than our forebears enjoyed), book one of Broken Spur’s five Conestoga wagons. Each prairie schooner sleeps up to five guests with a king-size bed, pair of bunk beds, and futon couch. Stash snacks in the tiny kitchenette; for heartier chow, visit the on-site Broken Spur Steakhouse. Southern Utah’s spectacular canyon landscapes, including Capitol Reef National Park and Boulder Mountain, are just a short drive away. brokenspurinn.com

Escalante Yurts (Escalante): Tucked into a rugged canyon landscape, these (vegan, cruelty-free) yurts provide a comfy stay convenient to both popular spots like Devil’s Garden and lesstraveled sites like Willis Creek Slot Canyon (six miles down a dirt road; 4WD is recommended). Your stay includes in-yurt breakfast service, fire pits for evening s’mores, and (in the larger yurts) a full kitchen. escalanteyurts.com

GLAMPING ON THE GO: CANYON RECREATION AND WANDERVANS

Prefer a nomadic lifestyle? Interested in the comfort, not so much in the campground? Canyon Recreation (canyonrecreation.com) outfits Jeeps with nylon roof tents, cushy foam mattresses, and everything you need to cap a day of guided exploration. Wandervans (wandervans.com), for the DIY set, offer fullyequipped campers with kitchenettes, queen beds, and space to stash bikes and boards. Rent one in Salt Lake City and bring along your dog—for an extra fee. Add on a Porta Potty and shower tent for ultimate comfort and convenience.
