On a recent Friday night, my friend Rachael and I had full-on cabin fever. We needed out of Salt Lake City, but weren’t up for a road trip. So we packed our backpacking gear and headed for the hills, choosing Lake Blanche as our destination. The sun quickly set and we hiked through darkness. The typically crowded trails were empty as we gained elevation, leaving the glowing lights of the city far behind us. We reached the top near midnight and quickly cooked some backpacking pesto pasta. As soon as we took our first bites, we immediately knew it would be tough to finish.

But we choked it down because…animals, and were stuck with our oatmeal having a hint of terrible pesto flavor the next day. From this awful experience, we decided to teach ourselves to make better backpacking food. You reap the rewards from what we learned on page 24. Read on about trail running Utah’s peaks (pg. 10), riding bikes in Idaho’s wilderness (pg. 20), and the best swaps for buying and selling gear (pg. 26). Happy adventuring!

Another winter is coming, and there are plenty of changes coming to Utah’s ski resorts. We’re highlighting everything from improved eats to new lifts, so you can better plan your snowy season ahead.

ALTA Not a new program, but worth a mention. If you want to get in a few afternoon turns or are a beginner looking to practice your skills, visit after 3:00 p.m. for $10 tickets on the Sunnyside lift. For just $35, get a Sunnyside Season Pass and ski after three all winter long. alta.com BRIAN HEAD Owner John Grissinger’s Kansas-style BBQ is enormously popular here. To keep up with demand, the resort built a new 2,000-square-foot restaurant and barbecue pit to increase their serving capacity for dinner every Friday and Saturday. On the ski side, first-time skiers and riders will love the riskfree University Program, which allows you to test-drive either sport. Brian Head guarantees you’ll be skiing and riding in just three lessons, or you get a full refund. brianhead.com BRIGHTON This isn’t new information, but it’s still news. Brighton will again offer free skiing or riding to all kids 10 and under. So bring ‘em young! brightonresort. com CHERRY PEAK For its second season in operation, this resort is adding a third lift, called the Summit Lift, which doubles their skiable terrain to 400 acres. Sara Valerious racing down at the Peak Series.

Utah’s Toughest Trail Runs 5 Peaks to Bag This Fall By Conner Newbold Utahns are surrounded by mountains on all sides, yet many people run back and forth on the same roads, past the same McDonalds, Starbucks, and houses every day for years. Looking to mix up your routine? Head for the hills! Trail running doesn’t take any special skills, just a new pair of kicks with better grips for steep and slippery terrain. Sure, it takes a bit more grit to run up a mountain than it does to jog across town, but the exhilaration of bagging a peak is a high you won’t find while jogging in place at the crosswalk. Maybe that explains why trail running is on the rise in Utah and beyond. Longtime road runners and avid trail runners alike are flocking to new races off-road races like the Ragnar Trail Relays and the Moab Trail Marathon.

Julian Carr, former pro skier and self-described avid hiker, saw the trail running trend and decided to organize a series of “short distance, max elevation gain, mountain adventure races” that he’s dubbed the Discrete Peak Series. In this case, “short” means nearly 10 miles, max elevation gain means a 4,000-foot ascent to a peak, and adventure race means there’s a fun, open atmosphere for runners of all experience levels.

The rapidly increasing numbers at the Peak Series show that runners are searching for more interesting, difficult terrain to conquer. Though the Peak Series is over for this season, fall is still a great time to hike and run in Utah’s mountains. Here are five of our favorite runnable peaks, ranked from toughest to easiest. Note that steep climbs and exposed sections means you’ll have to walk in some spots, but that’s just part of the adventure when trail running.

1. Mt. Raymond

Distance: 7.8-mile out-and-back Elevation Gain: 3,100 feet Summit Elevation: 10,241 feet Directions: Start at the Butler Fork Trailhead in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Accessible from I-215 Exit 6. Many hikers and runners come to Big Cottonwood Canyon for the popular Gobbler’s Knob trail, never realizing they’re just a few miles from a far more beautiful peak trail: Mt. Raymond. Though it’s a few feet shorter than its more popular sister, Raymond is undoubtedly a tougher and more interesting climb. This trail starts steep—expect to gain nearly 1,000 feet of elevation in the first mile or two. It levels off briefly after the first climb, but don’t get used to it. There’s plenty more cramp-inducing ascents to come. In the meantime, enjoy the expansive aspen groves and pine forests. After about two miles, the awe-inspiring face of Mt. Raymond comes into clear view. A mile or so later, the climbing begins again. The trail leads to the saddle between Raymond and Gobblers, where there’s a short scramble up a knife-edge ridge. At this point, the trail breaks through treeline, winding through the bare rock and snowfields of the ridge.

few twists and turns, so use a map or research the directions in advance to to safely navigate the 1.3-mile descent back to the trailhead.

The last half mile is scrambling, and just before the summit, one final push up a short but steep rocky granite face. The peak offers fantastic views of Gobblers Knob, Twin Peaks, Wildcat Ridge, and the surrounding valleys.

4. Frary Peak

Distance: 6.3-mile out-and-back Elevation Gain: 2,030 feet Summit Elevation: 6,596 feet Directions: The trailhead is on the east side of Antelope Island, 20 miles west of I-15 Exit 332 (Layton).

2. Mt. Nebo North

Distance: 8.7-mile out-and-back Elevation Gain: 3,809 feet Summit Elevation: 11,933 feet Directions: The trailhead is on the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway (worth the trip even if you don’t get out to run). Accessible from I-15 Exit 252 (Payson).

The highest point on Antelope Island, the view from Frary Peak is a glorious panorama of nearly half the Wasatch Front, as seen from across the Great Salt Lake.

Named after the biblical mountain where Moses went to commune with God, Nebo has two staggering peaks, surveyed at 11,933 (north) and 11,882 (south). It’s the tallest mountain in the Wasatch Range—yes, even taller than Mt. Timpanogos, though Timp is often erroneously labeled tallest. It’s intimidating, let’s just admit it.

From the valley, Antelope Island looks stark and dry. In reality, it’s anything but. A run up Frary Peak is the chance to see the diverse wildlife that call Antelope Island home: 250 species of migratory birds, herds of bison, and the recently-reintroduced pronghorn deer. The route up has little to no shade, so pick a cool day or start early and bring water. For the sake of the view, try for a day with good air quality.

This trail takes runners to the north peak through fields of wildflowers and aspen stands. The first three or so miles are easy and beautiful with a smooth and gradual 1,400-foot elevation gain. The final leg is guaranteed to get you wheezing, ascending 1,300 feet in just three quarters of a mile across a stark ridge of loose shale and limestone.

The trail is a fairly easy to run until the last half mile where it splits. Option one requires scrambling to navigate the rocky ridge blade. The safer option involves maneuvering down a small bowl then back up to the peak via a series of stairs and exposed roots.

This trail is one of the lesser-frequented in the range, and perfect for the runner who wants to get away from crowds and focus on the wildlife and the rhythm of the run.

5. Squaw Peak

@Crazy-mother-runners climbing the peak.

3. Fish Lake Loop

Distance: 9.4-mile loop Elevation Gain: 2,400 feet Summit Elevation: 10,400 feet Directions: Start at the Dry Fork Trailhead. Accessible from I-80 Exit 155 (Wanship) to Highway 32. Buried deep in the Uintas, Fish Lake National Forest is dotted with innumerable lakes, ponds, and streams. This trail weaves through three lakes and a ridgeline, all in a nine-mile loop.

Distance: 7.1-mile out-and-back Elevation Gain: 2,739 feet Summit Elevation: 2,612 feet Directions: Start from the Rock Canyon parking lot, five miles west of I-15 Exit 269 (University Avenue/Provo). Squaw Peak got its name in 1850, when the partner of a Ute chief fell to her death while climbing the sheer cliffs during a skirmish with local militiamen. Fortunately, the modern-day trail to the peak doesn’t require taking that route (though the canyon often teems with rock climbers looking for a challenge). The trail starts in town, just a block away from the Provo LDS Temple and pushes deep into the canyon, closely following a runoff river, before looping around backward to the peak. The first mile or two of trail through Rock Canyon is, predictably, gravelly and uneven. Take a left at the fork in the trail. Here, the ascent begins. The rest of the path is wellpacked and oft-used dirt, but fairly steep. It continues to gain elevation while looping through meadows and trees, ending in a brief walk along the ridge before the peak. If you’re an experienced trail runner looking for a tougher trail in this area, try one of her Squaw Peak’s nearby sisters—Y Mountain, Maple Mountain, or Buckley Mountain—in order from lowest to highest elevations. No matter which peak you pick, these five trails are sure to challenge you, and take your trail running to the next level.

Reports differ on whether this loop should be rated easy or strenuous— you’ll have to go find out for yourself. Once at Dry Fork Trailhead, follow a stream for a few miles. The loop takes you past the three lakes—first, Round Lake, then Sand Lake, and finally Fish Lake. On your way, enjoy the rainbow of wildflowers and a bonus waterfall.

Conner Newbold is a freelance writer living in Provo, Utah. When he’s not writing, Conner’s running, cycling, or digging through small town thrift shops.

Once at Fish Lake, keep going past the dam to find the trail to the ridge, where you’ll run a few miles to a knobby peak. Getting down involves a [ sportsguidemag.com

How to Have a Great Outdoor Dog The Training, Safety, and Gear Tips You Need By Molly Newman Hitting the trail (or river, or campsite) with your dog might sound like a dream: You and your best buddy, the great outdoors, a wagging tail, a welcome snuggle at the top of the mountain or the end of the day. But all too often, the combination of dogs and outdoor adventures means off-leash shenanigans, a constant stream of “Leave it!” and “Come back here!,” or even serious risks to your dog’s health and safety. Utah is blessed with an abundance of dog-friendly trails, parks, and campgrounds (see “Hiking With Your Hound” and “Have Dog, Will Travel” at sportsguidemag.com for some of our favorites). Equipped with proper training, safety awareness, and pup-friendly gear, you and your four-legged friend can look forward to a lifetime of exploring together.

YOUR CANINE COMPANION Which dog will make the best buddy for your hikes, runs, or paddling trips? Most likely, the dog you already have. Even toy breeds can be great trail companions, though they may tucker out early and need a lift. If you’re considering adopting a dog, however, some breeds and traits are definitely better suited to river and trail than others. In particular, brachycephalic breeds—“flat-faced” dogs such as pugs and French bulldogs—often struggle to breathe on long trips or at high altitudes. Sturdy working dogs such as Australian shepherds or water-loving breeds like Labrador retrievers make rugged, reliable companions for all sorts of adventures. But whichever breed you’re considering, take into account how often you’ll actually be outdoors with your dog. If you’re a weekend warrior with two weeks of vacation a year, that’s a lot of downtime for an 12

active breed of dog such as a border collie, and understimulated dogs tend to get into trouble.

SIT! STAY! GOOD DOG! Dog behavior experts and veterinarians agree: The most important part of having a positive outdoor experience is ensuring that your dog is trained to react properly to distractions and dangers both onand off-leash. “The number-one most important skill for a dog that will be off-leash is rock-solid recall,” says Ty Brown, professional trainer and owner of Ty the Dog Guy (tythedogguy.com). With all the distractions that being on the trail involves, “You need to be able to call your dog off a rabbit, a deer, or another dog and have it respond to you instantly.” Even a dog that’s perfectly trained to abandon a distraction and come back to your side can get into trouble on the trail. Steep dropoffs, stray snakes, or tempting but toxic plants may lurk just around the corner. Keeping your dog within a 30’ radius at all times, whether with a long leash or simply a watchful eye, can help stave off unforeseen dangers. For even the best-behaved pup, spotting other dogs along the trail can pose a nearly irresistible temptation—and a potential hazard. “Most people see being outside as an activity where a dog should go up to and play with every other dog it sees,” Brown says. “But that’s not a good way for dogs to meet.” Instead, Brown suggests that dogs should look to their owners before making any movements toward other dogs or people. “Proper dog socialization looks a lot like human socialization. When you’re in line at the bank, you don’t engage everyone else in conversation.

Bites and Stings: The backcountry is filled with insects that are seemingly lying in wait for your pup. The warning buzz of a bee or a wasp may keep humans at bay, but it sparks dogs’ curiosity and invites investigation. Most bee or wasp stings are simply painful annoyances, but if your dog manages to get a sting inside its mouth or throat, the resulting swelling can block its airway.

You mind your own business and respond in a polite way if you’re approached by someone else.”

HEALTH HAZARDS While a watchful eye goes a long way toward preventing doggie distress on the trail, there are still plenty of hazards that can befall your pup. Keep an eye out for these common issues and injuries. Heat Exhaustion: Even in cooler fall and winter months, an active dog can overheat in less time than you’d think. Long-haired breeds such as huskies are at particular risk, but any dog is susceptible to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Take frequent breaks for rest and water, and keep an eye out for symptoms such as increased drooling, red gums, and uncontrolled panting: all signals your dog is in distress. Painful Paws: Sun-scorched trails, sharp rocks, and icy snow can all wreak havoc on your dog’s tender paw pads. Before starting a hike or trail run, test the ground’s temperature with your hand: If it’s too hot for you to touch comfortably for five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s feet. Protect those paws with a properly fitted set of booties. Sprains and Strains: Dogs are just as vulnerable as humans are to wrenched ankles and twisted knees. In fact, injuries to the cruciate (knee) ligament are the second most common outdoor injury among dogs, according to Dr. Carol McConnell, DVM, chief veterinary officer at Veterinary Pet Insurance. She recommends keeping an eye on your dog’s weight to help prevent these painful and frequently costly problems: “A common cause to all sorts of knee problems is obesity. A9R708746.pdf Of course, keeping dogs lean can’t prevent this injury, 1 11/21/13 11:53 always AM but it may help lower your dog’s risk.”

Tick bites pose another painful problem. Fortunately, Lyme disease isn’t endemic to Utah, but there are several other tick-borne diseases that can be transmitted to dogs, including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Be sure to inspect your dog for ticks after rambling through wooded areas, especially the tender skin around and inside its ears: a perfect place for these little critters to hide. Another dangerous bite comes from the common mosquito. While mosquito bites themselves aren’t particularly dangerous, they can transmit heartworm larvae, leading to a debilitating and potentially deadly infection. Year-round protection with a monthly chewable tablet or topical liquid is your best bet to keep your dog heartworm-free. If you’re hiking or camping in an area known to be particularly buggy, you may be tempted to spritz your dog with some of the DEET repellent you carry for yourself. Don’t do it! According to the ASPCA, dogs exposed to DEET may exhibit symptoms ranging from conjunctivitis (pink eye) to breathing problems and seizures. As we head into Utah’s crisp fall months, there’s no better time to take your dog for a long walk, run, or paddle. Make this your best season yet with a trail-ready canine companion.

SPEED INSTINCT

UPDATE

The Nike LunarGlide 8 is a cushioned trainer FALL 2016 that provides a smooth, stabilized ride for runners. The engineered mesh upper combined with the Flywire cables provide your feet with a snug and adaptive fit without adding too much weight to the overall shoe. The sole has been redesigned, using a laser siping technique to amplify INTRO the cushioning exactly where you need it, and disperse the impact FALL 2016 across the entire foot for incredible comfort and smoothness. These precisely engineered contours offer superb traction to the otherwise sleek outsole. Lunarlon foam keeps the shoe light, and provides a soft padded landing with Dynamic Support. The Dynamic Support uses softer foam on the lateral side for cushioning, more firm foam on the medial side, and has a supportive wedge embedded into the foam. This shoe is great for runners looking for a daily trainer with a bit of extra support in a lightweight, sleek package.

Saucony

WEIGHT: MEN’S 8.4 OZ. | WOMEN’S 7.5 OZ. CATEGORY: TRAIL | LIGHTWEIGHT PRICE: $130 WWW.HOKAONEONE.COM

The new Speed Instinct weighs in at only 8.4 oz (men’s size 9) but has loads of underfoot cushioning compared to other trail shoes in its weight class. This neutral shoe fits like a road racing flat and features softer foam in the heel and firmer cushioning in the forefoot. This works very well for ascending hills, and 4mm lugs made of tougher carbon rubber mitigate the need for a rock plate. All of this is accomplished on a fairly wide platform that feels very stable, and a wider toe box than most Hokas. If you primarily train on smooth trails and are looking for a very well-cushioned training or racing shoe with a snug fit, the Speed Instinct is a must try.

The Ride series of shoes sits on the neutral side of the support spectrum and has a moderate amount of cushioning. The use of EVERUN foam keeps the Ride 9s very comfortable without feeling too padded. Featuring a 27mm heel stack and a 19mm forefoot stack, the Ride 9s feature an 8mm drop. This shoe is a great option for neutral runners looking for a responsive and long-lasting daily trainer.

Skechers

This recent offering from The North Face is quite a departure from their previous models, and lovers of lightweight, minimalist trail shoes should take note. The Litewave TR is an 8.1 oz, surprisingly wellcushioned neutral trail shoe with a ride better than any North Face shoe we’ve tried. Combined with a 6mm offset and an accommodating toe box, the Litewave is made for fast paces on smooth trails. While a rock plate is noticeably absent onTOP rockier trails, The North Face’s UltrATAC™ outsole material has a surprising PICK amount of grip for being low profile. If you’re looking for a racing shoe or a hybrid trail shoe that FALL 2016 rides well on roads, the Litewave TR is a must try.

The new 5Gen midsole cushioning system provides supreme comfort and a plush ride without sacrificing responsiveness. Changes to the upper enhance the breathability and flexibility of the shoe. The fit is true to size, with what feels like a slightly less generous toe box UPDATE than the original. We found the GOmeb Strada 2 a reliable go-to shoe for FALL 2016 long runs, recovery runs, and even light tempos on the road.

Fans of this neutral trail running shoe from Pearl Izumi will be pleased to hear that little has changed on this third version. A very smooth semi-firm ride is enhanced by a grippier outsole than previous versions. Testers loved that this outsole held well to wet surfaces including snow and slick rocks. Additionally, Pearl Izumi continues to enhance the toe box of this shoe with a wide natural feel, while retaining the moderate heel offset of 6mm. Combined with a durable and well-fitting upper as well as a forefoot rock plate, this is a 10.5 oz trail shoe you can trust for any distance or terrain.

Running in Monument Valley, Utah.

Cory Reese From Bucket List Runner to Badwater Finisher By Alexa V. Morgan Ultrarunner Cory Reese knows that slow and steady may not win the race, but it will get you across the finish line. Reese, a 38-year-old social worker, lives in Hurricane with his wife, Mel, and their three kids. Always up for a challenge, he ran a marathon in 2009 and soon discovered his passion for running on trails. He completed his first 100-mile race in 2011 and now has more than 20 ultramarathons under his belt. “I’m not necessarily a gifted athlete,” he admits. “I’m not fast, but I just use perseverance and tenacity to my advantage.” Reese’s everyman charm and seemingly unending optimism have endeared him to the local running community. “He’s so personable, so friendly, and so happy. He’s so relatable to everybody,” says Steve Hooper, owner of the St. George Running Center. “People see him out there accomplishing these great things—it inspires them to want to do something different, something amazing in their lives.” Last October, he ran the St. George Marathon four times back-toback—joining the rest of the field on his last lap—04.8 miles total. Reese craves the challenge of seeing how far he can push himself. This year, he fulfilled a longtime dream by applying for entry into Badwater, a 135-mile trek from Death Valley to Mount Whitney in the middle of summer billed as “the world’s toughest foot race.” To prepare his body for the extreme conditions, he trained during the hottest part of the day wearing sweatshirts, tights, and a wool hat, and sat in a sauna for hours. Reese says he views Badwater as the epitome of running, a true test of dedication and will. The race started at 8 p.m. on Monday, July 18. Reese ran throughout the night and all of the following day. Though the heat was definitely an 18

issue, sleep deprivation proved to be his real enemy. “By the second night, I kept falling asleep mid-stride and waking myself up stumbling. I just couldn’t seem to break out of it,” he says. “Even on the last day of the race, during the middle of the day, I was just so tired that I kept falling asleep because I had been up for 40 hours.” His crew, consisting of his wife and three friends who are all experienced distance runners, kept him going. They took turns driving the support van; making sure food, beverages, and supplements were always on hand, and running with him through dust storms, 120° afternoons, and 3,000-foot climbs. He reached Whitney Portal at 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, finishing 77th in the field with a total time of 45:20:33. “I was just so happy and so

Over the last seven years, Reese has reached the finish line of numerous “bucket list races,” once-in-a-lifetime experiences that have tested his mental and physical limits. Moving forward, his priorities will be a bit different. “I want to change my focus to helping others achieve their goals by pacing other runners, maybe doing some coaching,” he says. “I’ll continue to do the races I love, hopefully staying healthy and injury-free. I feel like I’m at a really good place in my running right now where I’ve accomplished what I set out to do, and so now I’m going to focus on having fun.” Reese’s exploits are chronicled on his blog, fastcory.com, and in his new book, Nowhere Near First: Ultramarathon Adventures from the Back of the Pack. With humor and refreshing honesty, he shares anecdotes from races he finished (and those he didn’t), practical knowledge acquired over seven years of running, and advice on going after goals and living life to the fullest. “There’s never a challenge too big for Cory,” three-time St. George Marathon winner Aaron Metler says. “He’ll run 100 miles and jump up in the air with a smile on his face like he’s out for a walk in the park. It’s always interesting to see what he’s going to do next.”

relieved to see that finish line in front of me. It was really overwhelming,” Reese says. “We’re capable of so much more than we think.”

Banned in Idaho

Where to Ride After the Boulder-White Clouds Wilderness Creation By Nick Como There’s a saying about mountain biking in Idaho: “If you’re not pushing your bike, you’re not mountain biking.” From my experience, I wholeheartedly agree. Riding the trails in and around the Sawtooths, White Clouds, and Boulder Mountains between Stanley and Ketchum, at times it feels like I’ve been off my bike more than on it. And I’ve cherished every one of those hard-earned, root-strewn, rough-tread miles. These trails, a far cry from the manicured built-for-bikes singletrack common in resort towns, that allow for Instagramming along the way,

test your mettle as a mountain biker. But, fear not: you won’t have the opportunity to see if you have what it takes. Thanks to the newly formed Boulder-White Clouds Wilderness, the crown jewel bike trails—Antz Basin and Castle Peak Divide—are now off limits to twowheeled travel. Catching the mountain bike community by surprise, Idaho Republican Mike Simpson pushed a bill through Congress that had sat stagnant for decades to create the Boulder-White Clouds Wilderness, which was signed by President Obama in August 2015. So, what gives? Reacting to fear that the White House could have created a larger National Monument using the Antiquities Act, which grants the Executive Branch the power to create National Parks and Monuments, a political poker game began which left mountain bikers on the outside looking in. There were no threats of imminent mining, which would be exempt anyway based on a mining act from the late 1800s, no user conflicts or overuse, and, adding insult to injury—zero studies and limited public input. In an instant, these trails simply vanished. Mountain bikers appreciate wilderness, but are banned from Wilderness—with a capital “W.” A main sticking point for mountain bikers is that our mode of travel had not even been invented when the Wilderness Act was written in 1965, the tool which created the newly formed White Clouds Wilderness. That legislation describes banned modes of travel to include motorized and mechanized travel. So mountain bikes, which were retroactively considered mechanized, are

out. Ironically, mechanical climbing ascenders are allowed (go figure), as well as modern ski touring equipment and spring-assisted trekking poles. What’s a mountain biker to do?

TRI one or TRI them ALL! Saturday, Jan 21 LIMITED # of ENTRIES Saturday, Feb 11 Last 2 years this event Sold Out! Saturday, Mar 4 l

I took a late trip to Stanley, Idaho last summer to ride the classics one last time: much like saying goodbye to an old friend. It was a melancholy sadness, where words can’t describe of a loss which is still physically there—just beyond the reach of my fat tires. I felt like Edward Abbey must have, watching as Lake Powell slowly erased Glen Canyon. Well, maybe a little more George Washington Hayduke. Lost, just below a few hundred feet of water—or in this case—behind a four-foot tall sign, maddeningly off limits. Rather than describing our 17-mile, eight-hour epic ride up Chamberlain Divide to Castle Divide, that led to a screaming downhill; let me instead give you, dear reader, some other options. The former would be tantamount to torture: the rides we’ve lost were that good.

ALTERNATE RIDES IN THE WHITE CLOUDS AREA Germania Creek: Start at the Three Forks Trailhead and head down Germania Creek for about two miles, then head up Chamberlain Basin. At about mile five you’ll come to the wilderness boundary. Park your bike and start hiking up to Chamberlain Divide to take in the views of Castle Peak, where the classic ride would have continued on to. Retrace your steps, and if you want more mileage on the return, turn left to out-and-back Germania Creek. While the total elevation gain is moderate, the constant up-and-down spurts will have you hikea-biking and crossing flows more than most enjoy. Masochists rejoice! Just bring along some waterproof socks. Fisher/Williams Loop: A classic ride on the western edge of the wilderness, with an easy pedal up a dirt road through a burn area, culminating with a buffed downhill. FOR THE NON-BIKERS At its heart, Stanley is a river town. It’s the gateway to the classic Middle Fork of the Salmon, where the upper reaches of the Main Salmon River flows through town. Sawtooth Adventure Center (sawtoothadventure.com) runs half-day trips a few miles downstream of town, which include a great lunch on the river. They can also arrange guided mountain bike or climbing trips. Both the Sawtooth and BWC Wilderness area are a hiker’s dream. High peaks, alpine meadows, and glacial lakes are par for the course on nearly every hike. Pick any route and you won’t be disappointed. Thanks to the porous Idaho batholith, hot springs dot the map; the perfect end to any adventure.

you achieve that goal. The purpose of these workouts is to train the body to clear fatigue-causing agents and by-products. If a runner’s body is unable to metabolize such products associated with exhaustion as they’re being produced, the runner will hit a state of fatigue. In tempo running and threshold sessions, an athlete’s physiological systems learn to clear accumulating by-products to manageable levels, delaying the onset of fatigue. This allows the athletes to run faster for longer periods of time.

Tempo Training For Runners

Image licensed by Ingram Image

Another important benefit—and something that shouldn’t be taken lightly—is the confidence these training sessions can give athletes. In completing a tempo run, runners see themselves running at more difficult paces for longer periods of time. Through tempo intervals, they may notice they’re able to persevere through longer training sessions at more demanding paces and intensity. Both types of threshold workouts have potentially positive mental benefits that will improve athletic performance in runners.

By Rebecca Winn

Coordinator, TOSH Running Program In the sport of distance running, coaches and athletes alike understand the value in building mileage to prepare for an upcoming race. While it’s obvious that endurance training must include comfortable distance runs, an ideal regimen incorporates other types of workouts as well. Tempo runs, or threshold sessions, are one of those other types of workouts. WHAT IS TEMPO TRAINING? A common definition of tempo training is “comfortable hard” running. The intensity of a threshold run is certainly higher than an easy or moderate training run. Because the pace is more difficult, a runner should know they can complete the given distance at the given pace, but they also look forward to the end of the run. During such a workout the paces are challenging, but doable for a prolonged period of time, which normally refers to 20 to 30 minutes during a practice session. With ideal training, including practice at tempo pace and a suitable taper, some runners can learn to sustain this pace for nearly 60 minutes on race day. If a runner is new to this idea, I have them keep themselves in check, by asking themselves if this is a pace they could run for 30 or 40 minutes. At any point during the training session if that answer is “no,” then the athlete needs to decrease their speed. Experience has taught me that many endurance athletes tend to train at threshold paces almost daily. The idea that running has to be hard every day to be worth the effort is a myth. In structured training for improvement in performance, a tempo day will be faster than a recovery and maintenance day. It’s important not to go too fast during this type of workout. Paces that are harder or faster than “comfortable hard” should be saved for interval training sessions. WHY IS TEMPO TRAINING IMPORTANT? To become a faster distance runner, the goal of training is to prolong how long it takes you to hit points of exhaustion while running at higher speeds. The positive physiological benefits of tempo training sessions will help

WHAT IS A TEMPO WORKOUT? I generally break tempo training session down into two categories: tempo runs and tempo intervals. Tempo runs: steady run at threshold pace for a sustained period of time without rest. Tempo intervals: multiple runs, or intervals, at threshold pace with short rest intervals between each. Often I remind my athletes that the rest during these interval sessions is more of a mental break, since running at more demanding paces may challenge the inner strength of runners. Paces during both of these sessions should be very similar if not the same. It’s not uncommon for an individual to feel as if they should go faster during the interval workouts because they have a rest period. But that shouldn’t be done. Instead, decrease your rest time to increase the amount of stress. HOW DO I GET STARTED? Before starting tempo training, I recommend runners first build their base mileage. Once fitness has improved and a good base has been developed, tempo workouts may be implemented into the training regimen. These training sessions should always start with a warm-up and end with a cool-down. Next, begin with steady runs at or near marathon pace. Remember your goal is to maintain the desired pace for up to 30 minutes. Start with a few minutes until you can complete 15 minutes at your desired pace, work your way to 30 minutes. As you’re attempting to increase the total amount of time spent at threshold pace, tempo interval sessions will prove to be beneficial. Again, short breaks not only increase the likelihood that you’ll be able to run more distance at the given pace, they also give you the necessary confidence to meet your goal. If your goal as a distance runner is to be able to run your race faster, try some tempo training sessions. You’ll be able to run faster for a longer period of time if you can properly train your body through these workouts. Better Backpacking Eats

Easy Options for Healthy Backcountry Meals By Jenny Willden Autumn is primo backpacking season in Utah thanks to the stunning colors and cool temps. If you backpack often, or are just getting into it, you may be looking for an alternative to bagged meals full of mystery preservatives and oversalted ingredients. But carrying regular food along adds enough weight to give you a backache. So what’s best solution for eating better in the backcountry while saving money? We’ll show you easy ways to backpack better: 1) buying healthy premade meals and 2) pre-bagging soup you can whip up in a jiff that won’t add too many extra ounces. 1. EASY EATS–DELIVERED Fireside Provisions is a delivery service like Blue Apron or Plated, but with one big difference: the food is made for backpackers and Campers. campers pay $60 for a two-person, two-day backpacking box, or order a la carte at $10 per two-person meal. Select meals at firesideprovisions.com based on the length of your trip and a box of food is delivered to your door. Meals contain no artificial ingredients, flavors, or preservatives and come in compostable bags perfect for hauling out waste. We tried it on a recent packpacking trip and a few winners stood out: MENU FAVORITES Breakfast: Santa Fe Scramble- Eggs, sundried peppers, garlic…oh my Lunch: Spicy Sasquatch- Salmon with curry seasoning stuffed in a pita pocket Dinner: Dragon Bowl- Ginger Chicken Rice Snack: Raw Cacao Energy Chunks COFFEE TALK You may love your French Press, but is it worth lugging it up a 24

mountain for gourmet coffee? Sacrificing for sub-par instant used to be awful, but that’s a thing of the past thanks to Alpine Start (alpinestartfoods.com). They’ll ship you instant coffee made out of high-quality beans that dissolve so smoothly it doesn’t taste… instanty. 2. DIY DINING The ladies of Dirty Gourmet (dirtygourmet.com) are experts at creating easy, healthy recipes for backpacking. At the recent Outessa Summit at Powder Mountain, they made a lightweight Tortilla Soup perfect for cold nights. All you’ll need to make it is is a backpacking stove like the MSR Pocket Rocket and the MSR Trail Duo Set, which includes a pot and two nesting bowls, and mugs. Both add little to your pack weight. DIRTY GOURMET BACKPACKING TORTILLA SOUP 1 teaspoon dried onion flakes 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon chile powder 1/2 tablespoon tomato powder 1 cup bean flakes 2 bouillon cubes 2 cups water tortilla chips, pre-crushed from being in your pack lime, cut in wedges avocado, cubed (optional, but worth the weight) 1. Pre-measure ingredients in a Ziploc baggie before you leave. 2. Add two cups water and boil in pot or put ingredients with boiling

water in food-safe silicone cooking bag for at least ten minutes. 3. Top with fresh lime and avocado. Enjoy!

NUUNTINIS: BACKCOUNTRY COCKTAILS Backcountry cocktails are all the rage, so kick back and relax after a long hike with a Nuuntini. Just take a flavor of Nuun (nuun.com) Hydration Tablets (we love strawberry lemonade) and mix it with your favorite spirit (vodka or tequila are best with this flavor) and water. Voila! Nuun’s effervescent tablets make the fizzy drink taste indulgent, and you’re at least hydrating while having dehydrating alcohol. Or make a mocktail— add a Nuun tablet, water, and a lime wedge, and you’ve got yourself a fancy camp drink too.

DEHYDRATE YOUR OWN SNACKS Snacks—easy to buy but more fun to make. After years of buying dried fruit from the store, it was time to try DIYing. The Excalibur 6-Tray Stackable Dehydrator is $39.95 (my average monthly cost for dried fruit and snacks) and insanely simple to operate.

Backpacking at Lake Blanche in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

After trying all kinds of recipes, watermelon jerky, cinnamon apples, and sweet potato or beet chips became our favorites. See full recipes for these at sportsguidemag.com. But a dehydrator is not just for fruit and veggies, try meat, and even eggs. It’s a worthwhile investment if you’re a dried food addict—or explore the backcountry regularly. We’d love to hear how you backpack better too, drop a line with your favorite camping recipes and ideas to editor@sportsguidemag.com.
