Game of Groans The Best Adventure Races in Utah
By Melissa McGibbon If running a standard 26.2 marathon isn’t your jam, no worries, there are plenty of other races that will spike your adrenaline and challenge your will to survive. If you’re game, sign up for a finish line attempt at one of these adventure races and see what it’s like to experience the edge of your human potential.
The Wasatch Front 100 Mile Endurance Run: 100 Miles of Heaven and Hell
The Wasatch Front 100 Mile Endurance Run is one of the most prestigious ultras. Runners come to the Wasatch from all over the world to do this race because of its reputation for being both brutally difficult and stunningly beautiful. The pink sunrises that light up the backside of Mount Timpanogos are said to bring runners to tears. Of course, the waterworks could also be symptomatic of running for 24 hours straight and on sunrise number two by then—still, weeping with joy is not something many other races can boast. Each year 240–315 runners start this venture, but usually only 70% of these souls finish. The cumulative elevation gain is 26,453’. In case you were wondering, Mount Everest is 29,029’, so basically, it’s like almost running to the top of the tallest mountain in the world. That’s all. Awards are given to every official finisher (meaning you have to finish in 36 hours or less), but other awards are given for finishers in time constraints. For instance, those who finish within 24 hours are given the Royal Order of the Crimson Cheetah award and those who finish within 30 hours are given the Spirit of the Wind award. There’s not even a word to describe the racers who compete in

the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning, but overachiever is a good start. These nutcakes run the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run (June), Vermont 100 Mile Endurance Run (July), Leadville 100 Mile Trail Run (August), and end it with the Wasatch 100 in September of the same summer. Not surprisingly only a handful of runners complete it every year.

AXS (Adventure Xtreme Series) Moab: A 50+ Mile Adventure in 6–12 Hours
The annual AXS begins with 18–20 miles of biking (road and mountain) through Moab’s famous and considerably technical trails, followed by 6–8 miles of moderate trail running and 300’ of rappelling in leg two, and then another 15–18 miles of moderate biking in leg three before finishing the race with 8–12 miles of flat-water kayaking in icy cold conditions on the Colorado River. Paddlers may not be able to feel their hands and feet for awhile after they finish, but they will have a sense of accomplishment to warm them up. Up to 300 total racers can enter solo or as a two-person or fourperson relay team. Tandem inflatable kayaks are provided for

two- and four-person teams. Solo racers must provide their own boats. All finishers receive a post-race medal. This race is not such a good choice for those with fear of heights. The rappel approach is spicy—it’s airy up there and you’ll have to traverse slick rock cliffs and navigate the course via cairns.

Ragnar Trail Zion 120 Mile Trail Running Relay: Run, Camp, Sleep? Repeat.
This Ragnar Trail Relay takes place in 8,000 acres of breathtaking terrain just outside of Zion National Park, Dixie National Forest, and Cedar Breaks. This race makes trail running and camping a team sport. While your team’s runner is on course, the rest of the team can hang out at the campsite or at the Ragnar Basecamp Village at the Zion Ponderosa Ranch, which features a restaurant, swimming pool, two hot tubs, and more. Regular teams of eight or ultra teams of four run relay style for 18–32 hours rotating through three loops of varying terrain during 24 legs of the trail race. Each team member runs three times during the race for an average of 15 miles each. Teams begin on Friday and run through the night to finish on Saturday. All Ragnarians receive participant medals and a shirt along with a swag bag full of various treats. Awards are given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each division, the fastest time on each loop, best team costume, best team name, best team campsite, and overall favorite team. Ragnar has done an impressive amount of work to make its trail series sustainable. The Village is solar powered, there’s recycling and composting everywhere, and even the Tikki torches burn with palm kernel oil. If Burning Man met trail running, it would happen at the Ragnar Trail Zion, but don’t let that deter you, the race is family friendly.

Spartan Beast Race: A 180 minute, 12+ Mile, 25+ Obstacle Race Course from Hell. The organizers of the Spartan Race tour their pernicious event all over the world and claim it’s one of the toughest races on the planet. Teams can have unlimited members, but must have a minimum of four people. Team members are timed individually and are not required to cross the finish line together. One thousand racers are unleashed in heats of 200 every 15 minutes and compete in an arena that tests resilience, strength, stamina, snap decision skills, and primal instinct. Competitor divisions include elite, confirmed, morning, afternoon, and late afternoon. No one is given clues as to what obstacles will be on the course or even a course map—they expect you to prepare for anything. Organizers just tell you to prepare for fire, mud, water, barbed wire, occasional live ammo on the Olympic Biathlon range, and they throw in diversionary tactics to catch participants off guard.
The Utah race takes place at Soldier Hollow in Midway and has one of the best settings for spectating as it was an official 2002 Winter Olympic venue. Spectators must sign a waiver, but can purchase tickets for $25 to see all of the action and participate in festivities such as Pull-Up Challenge, Slosh Pipe Challenge, Kaiser Challenge, and the Traverse Wall Challenge. Every finisher receives a medal and bragging rights. Point scores are based on your performance against the winner’s time in age group and overall measures. The top 20 males and females each receive a portion of the $40,000 cash awards, granting first place winners a $4,250 cash payout.

XTERRA USA Championship and Utah Long Distance Off-Road Triathlon: Not for Pansies

XTERRA races are open to pro and amateur athletes, but the USA championship in Ogden is only open to those who have qualified at one of the 50 qualifying events across the US. Thankfully, any athlete or team can sign up to compete on the same course at the Utah Long Distance Off-Road Tri. This race is identical to the USA Championship course and begins with a 1500M open water swim at Pineview Reservoir followed by a 28K mountain bike ride through the Wheeler Creek Trail System and ends with a 10K trail run at Snowbasin Resort. At this race you’ll find no shortage of America’s fittest fitness fanatics.

's 3:00 a.m. on a February Sunday morning, and instead of peacefully sleeping like most Florida vacationers, I'm lacing my running shoes, pinning on my race number, and nervously chewing ClifShot Bloks before dashing to the shuttle bus. Don't mistake me, I'm not a morning person, but on race day...everything is different.
we took to the scenic course. Though sore from the prior day's 10K and feeling drenched by the 100% percent humidity, every mile was magical. We ran past swamp lands, down Disney's Main Street, through Cinderella's castle, and alongside Epcot's iconic ball before crossing the finish line together.
So what motivates reasonable adults like me to travel across the nation sans children to the country's most epic amusement park? One word: runcations. After catching racing fever in 2011, my Saturday mornings quickly filled with local 5Ks and half marathons, but it took Disneyworld's Half Marathon last January to initiate me into the cult of destination racing. From perfectly coordinated shuttles to costumed characters and bands staged throughout the courses, no one does it like Disney. After finishing the half I understood why so many sacrifice sleep, vacation time, and hardearned cash to travel for a race—and I couldn't wait to do it again.
The enthusiastic spectators, fellow costumed participants, and hundreds of volunteers at the finish made us feel part of Disney's vibrant racing community, and I still get teary-eyed thinking about Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy escorting the half marathon's three final finishers across the line. In a sport where personal achievement is everything, seeing these women reach their goal was an inspiration.
Yes, running 26.2 miles in a day still intimidates me, but this year I dipped my toe in the proverbial marathoning waters by signing up for Disneyworld's Inaugural Glass Slipper Challenge: a 10K race on Saturday followed by the Princess Half Marathon on Sunday for a total of 19.2 miles. It took little convincing to get my friend Kelly to come along, and we flew to Orlando on race weekend undertrained, but fully prepared with Sleeping Beauty and Snow White costumes—it was a princess race after all. At 5:00 a.m. on half marathon day, we joined 26,000 other racers at the starting line following a pre-race, emcee-led dance warm up. Shuttles arrive on-course about an hour before the run starts, so moving and grooving Top 40 tunes is an excellent way to pass the time and warm cold muscles. The bang of fireworks and a wave of the Fairy Godmother's magic wand signified our corral's start, and

Goldilocks would approve of Florida’s winter racing climate where temperatures are not too cold, not too hot, but just right for half or full marathons. Bonus: if you’re fast enough you can finish the race before the sun’s up!

Make every step of your escape great, from packing to the finish-line celebration, with these simple suggestions.
2 Racing and roller coasters.
The kid in me can’t get enough of thrill rides, so running in a theme park is a no brainer. Since the races begin early, you can hit the highlights of all four parks in a day, and high five other race finishers sporting their medals in ride lines. If you’re a parent, bring the kiddos along and pair your passion for racing with a family vacation. Don't skip the Animal Kingdom! This peaceful park is a favorite for grown ups and kids a like.
3 On-course entertainment and post-race awesomeness. Fireworks, pirates, kites, high school bands, villains, princesses, dancing, and DJs...you’ll see it all at a Disney race. The constant entertainment makes running with music nearly unnecessary, and sign-toting spectators keep you motivated. After crossing the finish line volunteers pass out medals (three in all for Glass Slipper Challengers), wrap your aching body in ice, and hand you a box of tasty, healthy snacks you can eat while lounging in a beach chair. Plus, there are princess photo ops for the Disney obsessed.
4 Altitude advantage.
Looking to run your first half or full marathon? Wasatch runners live at about 4500' elevation, and if you race soon after arriving in Florida, the extra oxygen at sea level makes the distance seem easier.
5 Welcoming to every racer.
Are you a speed demon? Or a total newbie? Disney is for you. They motivate and support racers of every ability level, and you just need to finish the course averaging 16-minute miles (akin to a brisk walk for most) to complete it.

big events, photographic opportunities are endless, but the pros can’t catch everything. Whether you want a shot in front of Cinderella's castle or one with the Gospel Choir at mile 12, bringing your phone or a tiny camera is the only way to guarantee you’ll capture it.
5 Get oriented early. Check out the course map, start line
info, and race shuttle schedules so you can wake up confident of where and when you need to be in place. There’s little worse than missing the race because you are lost or stuck in traffic.
Don’ts 1 The old adage is true: nothing new on race day. Did you
train with it? If not, don’t race with it. Wearing the limited edition Disney running shoes you purchased at the expo may seem like a good idea, but the odds of a blister-free finish are not in your favor.
2 Don’t skip sleep. It’s tempting to forgo shut-eye when you’re
visiting the Magic Kingdom, but even one night without rest can affect athletic performance, reducing your shot at netting a PR. Eat early and take time to unwind so the time change and early wake-up call won’t be such a shock to your system.
3 Don’t fly out the day of your big race. Race first, play after. You’ll want time to swim in the pool and relax before reconnecting with reality.
4 Don’t forget the Body Glide! Cover any areas where clothing
rubs with an anti-chafing cream or spray the morning of. For two-day events, be sure to wear a different bra, shorts, and socks for each race. They’ll rub differently so you’ll be less likely to have irritation in one spot. Unfortunately, I have scars from learning this the hard way.
5 Don't expect a PR. Destination races are an experience, and
it's worth adding a few minutes to your finish time to enjoy the spectacle and snap photos with Prince Charming, men in tuxes, and evil queens along the way. n unborn baby’s lungs are full of amniotic fluid. Before we exit the womb, we’re incapable of breathing so mom delivers the requisite oxygen through the placenta, but once on the outside... we’re on our own. Our first breath fills our clean lungs with oxygen and—if you live in the Salt Lake Valley—microscopic particles of soot, exhaust, dust, aerosols, and other pollutants that cause inflammation, the precursor to disease.

Thankfully, your lungs have the capacity to filter an occasional dose of toxicity. But for Salt Lake Valley athletes, when is the air too polluted to exercise in?

We live and play in atmospheric layer closest to Earth, called the troposphere. The two biggest concerns for our health are groundlevel ozone and particulate matter. Human activities, from vehicle exhaust to industrial emissions, contribute to both. Ground-level ozone occurs when warming temperatures and sunlight react with engine and fuel gases in the air. Ozone levels increase in cities when the air is still, the sun is bright, and the temperature is warm. Ozone is therefore worse in the summer because of the ripe conditions. So don’t be fooled into thinking bad air is only a winter danger! Particulate matter is a term used to describe the microscopic particles floating in the air. These particles normally can’t be seen with the human eye, but when there are a large number present we clearly see a dark blanket of smog—also known as a temperature inversion. Salt Lake City’s unique geographic layout lends itself to temperature inversions. The surrounding mountains create a bowl where the warmer air acts as a lid and traps the colder air—and its pollution—in the valley. At times this causes Salt Lake City’s pollution levels to exceed cities five times its population! On average, only 5% of our annual days exceed the EPA standard of 35 micrograms per cubic meter, but in 2012 the Wasatch Front saw 22 days when the air quality was considered dangerous to human health. A scary statistic for athletes who run, cycle, and spend time outdoors year-round. Continued on page 22

Continued from page 20 Observational and controlled human studies suggest air pollution adversely affects athletic performance because athletes take in 10–20% more oxygen than sedentary folks—exposing them to greater levels of pollutants. The size of these microscopic particles allows them to bypass some of our defense mechanisms, like our noses, allowing them to penetrate deep into the lungs where they create inflammation and oxidative stress (a harmful by-product of your cells producing energy). During exercise these particles can travel directly into the bloodstream, resulting in bronchoconstriction and reduced ventilatory flow, both of which negatively affect athletic performance. They can also contribute to conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Thankfully, Salt Lake athletes can travel up-canyon above the inversion to leave the toxic environment behind, but if you must stay in the Valley, you’re faced with the difficult question of when to exercise and when to stay in. While there is no hard and fast rule for when to avoid exercising in bad air, check out the sidebar for tips to help you decide when to choose the dreadmill instead of venturing outdoors. Exercising Tips for Outsmarting the Smog Check the Quality: It’s easy to find daily air quality for Salt Lake City at airnow.gov or airquality.utah.gov. You can also download the American Lung Association’s app for on-the-go readings. If it’s a red air day, skip the outdoor workout—spending the afternoon coughing or with a sore throat is not worth the runner’s high. Hit the Trails: Cars and trucks emit toxic particles, so getting off the road and onto the trails is a smart decision. The farther you are from the source of the pollution the better the air quality, so hit the singletrack or canyons. Cyclists should choose lightly traveled roads or parks, and head out in off-peak traffic hours. Get an Early Start: High ozone pollution levels require sunlight and heat, so get out early in the day before the ozone rises to harmful levels. ueling correctly before a race makes all the difference in finishing strong or feeling depleted on the course. After coaching hundreds of athletes and racing for over 28 years, I’ve learned what foods work for before different races and what foods don’t. Although nutritional needs are very individual, here are some suggestions for your next event. Test these in training before using them in a race to be sure they work for you.
What to eat before a 5K, 10K, or Sprint Distance Triathlon Most runners do better with less in their stomachs during these shorter, faster races; especially if it’s an early morning event. I eat a very light breakfast of 125–250 calories of easily digested carbohydrates, like part of a flour tortilla, granola bar, or banana a few hours before the race start. I’m a 5’4”, 120–125 pound athlete, so if you’re larger you may need more calories, but still go light. A rule of thumb is .3–1 gram of carbohydrates per pound of body weight. Be careful not to consume too much or your body will shunt blood away from your muscles to your stomach to digest and slow your pace. Drink water or a watered-down electrolyte beverage with your breakfast, but don’t overdrink or you’ll have to use the bathroom excessively. Avoid anything high in fat or fiber or foods containing dairy, artificial sweeteners, or fructose, which can cause gastric upset. Usually very little food or water is needed during these shorter distance events, but be sure to go into the race well hydrated.
What to eat before a Half Marathon, Marathon, or Olympic Distance Triathlon For longer events, more fuel is needed during the event. Go into it with an easily digested carbohydrate product one or two hours beforehand like at a 5K or 10K. Fifteen minutes prior to the race start, eat a few additional chews, a bite or two of a peanut butter and honey sandwich, or part of a gel. Consume one gel packet or chews every 30–45 minutes during the race with electrolyte water. It’s best to be well hydrated at the

cellular level beforehand for peak performance. (Read more about this on my website at BlondeRunner.com). Again, avoid high-fat or fiber foods.
What to eat before a Half Ironman or Ironman Triathlon Event Events longer than a standard marathon event require more pre-race noshing, including protein. Start your pre-race nutrition routine the day before by eating small amounts of highcarbohydrate, low-fiber foods throughout the day and sip on electrolyte water to make sure your muscles are saturated. On race day, consume 250–350 calories of an easily digested lowfiber carbohydrate rich foods (ratio: 1 gram protein to 4 grams of carbs) with some protein beginning four or five hours beforehand and continuing every hour on the hour until an hour or two before the race. Yes, you will have to set your alarm and get up extra early; it’s worth it. If you’re nervous it may be hard to eat, but it’s important to eat anyway. Keep it simple with a bagel, rice, peanut butter and honey sandwich, banana, small amount of salted nuts, pasta, toast, granola bar, sweet potato, juice, protein drink, or Ensure (a popular choice for Ironman athletes). Wash foods down with a little electrolyte water. Consume a gel or chews every 30–45 minutes during the race to stay fueled. Keep these essential remedies on hand to deal with racing season’s inevitable bumps, bruises, and minor injuries. By Molly Newman

o matter how thorough your training program or how cautious your approach, there’s no such thing as a 100% injury-free sport. From simple overuse to more serious tumbles, there are many ways a race can go awry. Don’t let injury sideline you for longer than absolutely necessary. With these seven conventional and natural treatments on hand, you’ll be prepared to deal with just about anything racing throws your way.
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) Find them: at any drugstore or big-box retailer These popular over-the-counter medications, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, bring pain and swelling under control rapidly and are generally safe for short-term relief. Be cautious of overuse, though: Long-term NSAID use is associated with increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and sexual impotence. Read and follow label warnings to be sure you’re using these medications safely.
Also, don’t mistake acetaminophen (found in Tylenol) for an NSAID. It may ease pain but will do little to alleviate swelling. Worse, it can be very toxic to your liver, especially if you enjoy a post-workout beer or two. According to the FDA, accidental acetaminophen overdose is among the most common causes of liver failure in the U.S.
Epsom Salts
Find them: at a pharmacy or dollar store Just about everybody’s grandma had a box of this old-timey remedy stashed under her bathroom sink—and for good reason, it turns out. Epsom salts, more formally known as magnesium sulfate, are an all-natural remedy for complaints ranging from sore

muscles to more serious twists and sprains. Fill a tub with hot water and add two cups of Epsom salt, stirring until dissolved. Or, if a race has left you footsore, treat your tired feet to a doublestrength Epsom salt soak (add a little peppermint oil for an extrarefreshing twist). The magnesium may help relieve cramping and tiredness and encourage quicker healing of damaged tissues.
Massage Kit
Find them: foam rollers at performbetter.com; essential oils at mountainroseherbs.com Massages, whether from a pro (or kind-hearted friend) or selfadministered, are unparalleled for relieving stiffness and soreness. For maximum benefit from self-massage, invest in a foam roller; at about $20, this tool is an inexpensive way to boost your massage’s effectiveness. Add this simple blend of essential oils to your massage routine. It’s a combination of ingredients with time-honored healing power, and it takes just a few minutes to stir together. Soothing Muscle Rub Makes 1 cup (8 ounces) In an 8-ounce bottle, combine 25 drops each Roman chamomile oil and lavender oil, 15 drops peppermint oil, and 8 drops clary sage oil. Fill container with carrier oil of your choice (try sweet almond or grapeseed), cover, and shake to combine.
Cold Gel Pack
Find them: at sporting goods stores, icewraps.net, or drcoolrecovery.com For sprains, strains, and swelling, there’s no better short-term treatment than icing the injury. Cold therapy relieves swelling effectively and relaxes tissues, stimulating the release of endorphins that fight pain and promote healing. A bag of frozen

peas may work for the occasional twinge, but if you have recurring problems with a particular joint, it’s worthwhile to invest in a cooling pack that fits the affected area properly. Dr. Cool’s are sized and cut to fit any area from wrists to knees to shoulders, and they provide supportive compression for increased healing. For a double dose of comfort, look for multi-purpose wraps that can be iced or warmed to provide relief for different injury types.
Arnica Ointment
Find it: at natural foods stores or vitaminshoppe.com Especially if racing takes you off the beaten path, falls are a frequent hazard. Fortunately, most tumbles result in nothing more serious than a bruise or two. Athletes and parents of active kids alike swear by the bruise-relieving power of Arnica montana cream or gel. Keep a tube of this herbal remedy on hand for quick, side effect-free relief. Look out for “homeopathic” preparations, though, which are statistically unlikely to contain a single molecule of arnica’s active ingredients.
Antiseptic Wash
Find it: at drugstores or discount stores Trail runners and mountain bikers are especially susceptible, but any outdoor athlete can fall victim to the dreaded road rash. Combine abraded skin with all-natural dirt and rocks, and you’ve got the perfect combination for a nasty infection. An antiseptic wash helps skin heal naturally and is really useful when the skin has been burned or rubbed away, rather than simply cut. Look for a no-sting variety (like Band-Aid Hurt-Free Antiseptic Wash) that contains a true antiseptic ingredient, rather than an antibiotic wash that may lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Witch Hazel Hydrosol
Find it: at natural foods stores or gardenofwisdom.com Humble witch hazel is a plant with a hundred healing uses. Dab it on to reduce swelling and bruising; spritz it on cuts and scrapes to fend off infection; or, if you’re racing or training in a remote area, carry it along in case you tangle with poison ivy or poison oak. Just a little smoothed over the skin helps tame the misery-making itch and redness. (If sweating during races makes your skin break out, you’ll also appreciate witch hazel’s noted anti-acne properties.) Look for “hydrosol,” rather than the “extract” typically sold in conventional pharmacies. Hydrosol is steam-extracted from the plant and contains its full range of botanical ingredients, but has no skin-drying alcohol or other ingredients added.
Call in the Pros
Though these techniques and remedies offer a great basis for selfcare, sometimes there’s no substitute for professional attention. Contact a healthcare professional if you experience any of the following: ● • Pain that worsens or doesn’t improve in 3 to 4 days ● • Cuts or scrapes that become infected (pus or streaks appear) ● • Swelling, bruising, or deformation over a bone ● • Pain recurring in the same area regularly ● • Joint that locks or seems unstable With your medicine cabinet stocked with these useful products, you’re ready to get out there, play hard, and recover quickly. hether you’re new to racing or seasoned competitor, knowing what to do and not to do on race-day is key. As a race director, coach, and athlete I see races from many different perspectives. As I was once a beginner myself, I know it’s natural to feel a little out-of-place at your first race. Knowing what to expect will make your running and triathlon race experience more enjoyable. Here are some simple basic race etiquette rules to keep in mind:
Arrive at the Race Site Early
Give yourself plenty of time to park your car, pin your bib number on, place your timing chip, review the race route, warm-up/stretch, and visit the bathroom (which almost always has a line). Arrive at least 45 minutes before the race begins. Nothing is worse than anxiously rushing to the starting line or missing the start of a race.
Register & Pick-up Your Packet Early
Most race event companies have an option to register online or in person early as well as offer packet pick-up a day or two before the event. This helps alleviate race-day lines. Many running races offer race-day registration, but this is rare for triathlon events. The majority of triathlon events require pre-registration since the setup is more complicated and there are limits on race participant numbers. If possible it’s best to register early as this ensures you get a spot in the race; some races sell out. Race-Day Registration. Although pre-registration is highly recommended, you can often register on race day for running events. Be sure to give yourself extra time to fill out a registration form, pay, and stand in line to get your packet and timing chip.
Can’t Make it? Submit a Name Change
If you’re unable to compete in an event you signed up for and would like to give or sell your registration to someone else, many event companies allow this for a small fee. It may seem inconvenient, but to ensure accurate results it’s best to communicate with the event company and get the new name, age, and gender assigned. I have participated in a race in which a man

ran with a girl’s bib number and won that division, which made all the race results inaccurate. Many racers were upset, and it was difficult to fix; so please submit changes before participating in the event.
Warm Up, Stretch & Wear Proper Shoes
Warm up about 20–30 minutes before the start of the race. Take 5–10 minutes and go on a light jog to warm up the muscles and include some dynamic stretching. It’s also important to wear good socks and athletic shoes. I’m always surprised by how many people forget their running shoes. Don’t make this mistake or you could get unwelcome blisters.
Pin On Your Number & Don’t Forget Your Timing Chip
Be sure to retrieve your bib number and safety pins from your packet to pin on to the FRONT of your shirt or shorts before the race, and don’t forget your timing chip. Many race timing companies have the timing device attached to the bib number (disposable). Other events require you to strap something on your shoe, wrist, or ankle that must be returned at the end of the event. Make sure you have the device on before you start or you may not be timed and will consequentially forfeit race results and prizes.
Dress In Layers & Shed Extra Clothes
Most experienced runners know it’s wise to dress in layers. Plan to dress for 10 degrees cooler as you will produce heat while racing. You don’t want to get too warm and end up carrying or discarding your clothes. You can always put them back on at the finish.
No Outside Aid
To make the event competition fair, no outside aid is allowed during a race. This includes running alongside a loved one or handing them extra nourishment; a water bottle, watch, or towel. This is not allowed unless it’s done by another participant, race official, or volunteer at an aid station. All athletes need to complete the event with no assistance. However, cheering, holding signs, and taking pictures is always fair play.

Line Up Properly & Be Aware of Your Surroundings
In the last few minutes before the race, line up at the starting line and take your place based on how fast you run. The fastest runners should line up closest to the starting line and slower runners, children, and walkers behind. It can be frustrating and dangerous for runners to weave around children and slower runners and can result in someone tripping. Before slowing to drink or eat at an aid station glance over your shoulder to be sure you’re not slowing down or stopping right in front of another athlete. Note: In a running race it is okay to discard your water cup on the ground.
Thank the Volunteers
Volunteers make races possible and without them there would be no race, so be sure and show your appreciation with a smile, friendly wave, or a thank you. You might even consider giving back to the racing community and volunteering for a race or two each year yourself. You can count on seeing me and my family volunteering at races throughout the year. I was depressed at first until a friend reminded me that just because they’re labeled as professional doctors doesn’t give them the right to decide my life for me. She told me to fight, and my attitude went from depressed to believing I would walk again. I found a therapist who used pool therapy to teach your body to walk again. For three months I did one hour of shock therapy on my legs from my hips down to my toes and one hour of pool walking at 4 feet deep with my arm over the shoulder of my therapist. My right leg came back within the first few weeks of these treatments. My left leg took a few months after that, but I started walking with a walker, then crutches, then one crutch, and finally on my own in April 2004. I hung in the harness with a pelvis cast around my waist that hooked up to a pulley as I would lay on the hospital bed. It raised my pelvis up 6–8” off the bed. I did this for four months all day and night and was only allowed to lower myself onto the bed for one hour a day.

3. You defied their predictions. What drove you?

alter Brown is a runner who never quits. After a brutal accident 20 years ago, he was told he would never walk again. He battled back through pain and setbacks and today is a competitive racer.
1. Have you always been a runner?
No, I grew up in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and wanted to be a baseball player when I was young. I moved to Salt Lake City in 1982 and started running when I was 11 years old when a man named Paul Cummings (winner of the 1984 Olympic Trials in the 10,000-meter run) wrote a simple 3-month training program for me. It started with 2 miles and built up. I ran my first race in January 1982 with the Salt Lake Track Club at their eight-week winter series race. From then on, I loved competing.
2. What happened in your 1993 accident? What were your injuries and the doctor’s prognosis?
On Christmas Eve 1993, I was driving onto the on-ramp in Sandy to I-215 when I hit black ice and slid into the guardrail. I got out of my car and went to lift the hood of my disabled vehicle when a drunk driver came off the road and hit my vehicle, pinning me to the guardrail. I broke my pelvis in 23 places, hemorrhaged both my knees, and blew 2 discs in my lower back. The doctors said I would never walk again. At best with pinning my hip I would get motion of one leg to come back, but not both. I had an option to skip surgery and hang in a contraction device that would try to heal the breaks in my pelvis naturally, but I was assured that either way my mobility wouldn’t return.

4. What did your recovery process look like?
Recovery was slow, but the breaks in my body healed. Pool therapy and daily physical therapy helped a ton. I did this for a year and got to the point where I could walk and do everyday functions again, but my first attempt to run again didn’t come until 8 years later. I bought a mountain bike and used it from the time I was back to walking, but running still hurt too much.
5. What pushed you to start racing again?
In 2002 I watched my sister-in-law run the Top of Utah Marathon, and something in me knew I could do it! I tried running on and off after that into the fall and trained for my first race on July 4, 2003. It was a 15K run, and I took 20th overall with an average pace of 7 minutes. It was a far cry from my high school times, but I set goals after that to run my first marathon and am now on my 11th season of running strong!
6. What advice would you give to new runners or those looking to improve? My best advice is to get out and run 3–5 times a week. Start with low mileage and build slowly to get your body used to it. You’ll reach a point where it’s enjoyable and even therapeutic. Join a running club in your area and get motivated by others. If you don’t know of a group, ask your local running store for help.
7. Why do you run? What drives you and what do you get in return?
One of my mottos is: I Run Therefore I AM. This is me! It’s my life! My life has been molded around it from my youth on and it became stronger with a goal to simply walk again, to continually push my limits. I started a marathon pacing company called American Flyers Race Pacers that helps runners racing reach their goals. We run alongside them with specific time goals for the group to try and stick to. This has defined my racing, and I believe I would be burned out in my training if I didn’t have this in my life. I love watching others reach a goal they didn’t think they could accomplish until it happens. It inspires me to push harder.
8. What are some of your racing highlights?
My first marathon was Carlsbad Marathon, December 2003 with a time of 3:31. My fastest marathon was St. George Marathon, October 2010 with a 2:31. I’m currently 5th in the nation in age through USATF, and last year I won the Masters USATF for 40 and up in Utah. My fastest half marathon is 1:08 at the Mt. Nebo Half 2012.
