STARTING LINE From the Editor If you’ve been training for a big race, getting suddenly injured is tough. This January I caught an edge on my snowboard and slid into a tree, spraining my ankle. I knew fast that I wouldn’t be running again soon. “Luckily, I have a great doctor (shout out to Dr. Kick who wrote the runner’s knee story on pg. 14) and PT team helping me get running again. This includes a combo of early morning sessions on a treadmill in a swimming pool, physical therapy, and plenty of at-home exercises. My new 2016 racing goal: Utah 5Ks by April and running Broad Street, America’s largest 10-mile road race with over 40,000 participants, this May in Philadelphia. THE BIG Utah’s Must-run Half Marathons By Lora Erickson

Tulip Festival Half Marathon

U

tah has a lot of great races to choose from, but the half marathon distance is growing in popularity for many reasons: it allows for faster recovery, requires less training, and can be done more often than marathons. A half marathon can be completed by beginner or advanced athletes, but it still requires good stamina so runners are drawn to the challenge. Looking to run a half this year? Here are a few favorite local half marathons to put on your race calendar:

SALT LAKE CITY HALF

April 16, 2016 in Salt Lake City saltlakecitymarathon.com Speaking from experience I can tell you that the Salt Lake City Half Marathon is a great race. I ran it last year and liked the split clocks they had at various places along the route and race pacers. Both helped me stay on pace to reach my goal. It was also very well organized with fully staffed aid stations, lots of spectators, and the race started right on time. The course is an overall gradual downhill, so it’s not too hard on the body, and it takes runners past iconic landmarks in Salt Lake City with the beautiful snowcapped Wasatch Mountains in the backdrop. The course is also USATF & RRCA certified offering open, masters, and age group divisions. The finisher’s medal was also a belt buckle, which was very unique! Other race distances and a cycling event are also offered, so there is something for everyone. Not trained for a half yet? Participate in SLC Marathon’s newest event instead: a 10K skate. Open to recreational and pro skaters, the course goes through downtown and Sugarhouse, sharing a portion of the half marathon course. Use code blonderunnerslc16 to save $5.

TULIP FESTIVAL HALF MARATHON

April 30, 2016 in Lehi thanksgivingpoint.org/halfmarathon

This challenging but beautiful half marathon winds through portions of the Thanksgiving Point Gardens where over 250,000 tulips are blooming. A previous participant said, “The tulips are the size of your head and the scenery is gorgeous smelling so crisp and clean!” Who wouldn’t want to experience that? Racers love the winding route through the gardens that traverses through the golf course and passes Thanksgiving Point’s massive waterfall. This is certainly a breathing taking run, and one for the whole family with a 5K and Kid’s One-mile Run also offered.

DROP 13

June 11, 2016 in Big Cottonwood Canyon drop13.com This race offers all the great things runners look for: a beautiful route, unique medals, and reasonable prices. It starts near Solitude Ski Resort high in Big Cottonwood Canyon and offers ideal spring conditions with temperatures typically in the high 70’s or low 80’s in the canyon. The snow runoff fills the streams and runners are surrounded by green trees. The elevation on this course drops around 3000 feet from start to finish with almost no flat or uphill areas of running. So it’s a steep, fast downhill race if you are looking for a new personal record. They also offer special medal awards for finishing, breaking a personal record, dropping 13 pounds, and placing in your age group.

THE FEMALE ATHLETE TRIAD

What This Syndrome Means for Athletes By Molly Newman

In 2013, Angela Sorenson (not her real name) was preparing for her third marathon of the year. She’d stepped up her training schedule recently, trying to get her time back down after having to take several weeks off to recover from a stress fracture in her foot. Early morning runs and evening workouts had pared her social life down to nothing—and she didn’t have much time to stop for meals, either. Most days she found it easiest to skip breakfast, grab a yogurt for lunch, then eat something quick and easy before collapsing into bed at night. The week before the race, Angela was just hitting her stride during a twelve-mile run when a sickening pain shot up her leg. She collapsed to the ground, clutching her shin. Even before heading to the ER, she knew what was wrong: She’d fractured her tibia, and it would be weeks or months before she could return to running again. Angela’s injury falls into a pattern that’s grown increasingly common among women athletes: what researchers have termed the Female Athlete Triad. This condition consists of three interrelated factors: low energy availability, menstrual irregularities, and low bone mass. It affects women in every sport and of every age, and if not recognized and appropriately managed, can lead to long-term health consequences. Could you or a friend be at risk for the Female Athlete Triad? We asked experts for their advice.

10

[ Keeper 2016 ]

[ Health

sportsguidemag.com ]

WHO’S AT RISK? Any physically active woman can experience the Triad. “We used to believe that women in higher body-exposure sports, such as gymnastics, dance, or running, were at higher risk,” says Dr. Barbara Hoogenboom, physical therapist and education director of the Female Athlete Triad Coalition. “But as we’ve begun assessing more athletes, we’ve discovered even women in sports we thought to be lower-risk, such as soccer and volleyball players, are experiencing these conditions.” Wondering if you could be at risk? If you’re exercising or training intensely, watch for the development of these three conditions that together form the Female Athlete Triad: 1. LOW ENERGY AVAILABILITY Exercise burns through calories—and it’s no secret that many athletes, both male and female, want to achieve and maintain a lean physique. This combination of factors may lead to disordered eating, especially in sports where a low body mass is prized (Dr. Hoogenboom estimates that up to 50% of ballerinas suffer from eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia). However, you don’t need to meet the criteria for an eating disorder to have low energy availability. This term simply means that your caloric intake is not enough to cover the energy you expend while exercising. Whether you’re scrupulously watching your diet or just skipping regular meals because of a demanding training schedule, it’s easy to consume less than you need or simply not to realize how much you need to eat to stay properly fueled. Continued on page 12

NATIONAL OUTDOOR CHAMPIONS

Continued from page10 Female athletes are at particular risk of deficiencies in nutrients in addition to calories. Especially if you’re a vegetarian or vegan, your diet may be poor in iron, zinc, and calcium—all critical minerals for maintaining regular menstrual cycles and healthy bones. 2. IRREGULAR PERIODS No annoying and potentially embarrassing periods? Sounds like a great thing to many women. But, as Dr. Hoogenboom points out, “Diminished or absent periods are a serious sign that something is wrong in the body.” Menstrual irregularities lead to reduced estrogen production, which in turn impairs bone health and increases the risk of fractures. “If you’re not using hormonal birth control and you haven’t had a period for three months, it’s important to be evaluated by a physician,” Dr. Hoogenboom says. Mothers of teenage athletes should be aware of their daughters’ cycles as well; it’s especially critical for young women to maintain healthy estrogen levels during their bone-building years. 3. LOW BONE DENSITY Even after you stop growing, your bones are in a constant state of turnover, breaking down old bone cells and replacing them with healthy new ones. But in a state of chronic energy deficiency, the resulting hormone imbalances impair this process, leaving bones weak and easily broken. Frequent or slow-to-heal stress fractures and persistent shin splints are signs that bone damage is already occurring. MANAGING THE TRIAD Whether one, two, or all three signs of the Triad are present, the means of management is the same: “Good nutrition is the linchpin,” Dr. Hoogenboom says. Start keeping tabs on the calories you consume and expend and make a conscious effort to include plenty of calorie- and nutrient-dense foods. Pay special attention to your intake of iron, zinc, calcium, and Vitamin D. If you’re currently increasing your training intensity or entering higher-level competitions, consider consulting with a registered sports dietitian (not a “nutritionist”) for an evaluation of your eating habits.

RESOURCES • Learn more about the Female Athlete Triad and download a handout for athletes, parents, and coaches at femaleathletetriad.org • Find a registered dietitian who understands athletes’ nutritional needs at nutritionists.healthprofs.com (search for “sports dietitian”) • Track your food intake and calories burned with the MyFitnessPal app for iOS and Android at myfitnesspal.com

Despite the increasing number of studies demonstrating the consequences of the Female Athlete Triad, some researchers claim that the clinicians studying it do so to discourage women from engaging in sports. Nothing could be farther from the truth, says Dr. Hoogenboom: “We want every female athlete to be as healthy as she can. We’d like every doctor or physical therapist who works with female athletes to understand the risk and be able to have open, nonjudgmental conversations to help her have as long and productive a sports career as possible.”

Molly Newman lives in Portland, Oregon, where she hikes, walks, and runs whenever it isn’t raining—and often when it is. A contributor to Outdoor Sports Guide since 2009, she also hosts regular trivia nights and homeschools her two sons.

UNDERSTANDING RUNNER’S KNEE By Stephen Kirk, MD Sports Medicine Specialist, Comprehensive Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

Runner’s knee is the common term for any one of several conditions that cause pain in front, behind, or around the kneecap, or patella. The most common of these conditions is patellofemoral syndrome, patellar tendonitis, and anterior knee pain syndrome. As the name indicates, this condition is often associated with running; however, it can also result from other athletic activities that place significant stress on the knee, such as basketball, skiing, soccer, and cycling. Runner’s knee is one of the most common chronic knee injuries and is more often seen in women than in men. WHAT CAUSES RUNNER’S KNEE? Runner’s knee often develops as a result of overuse of and repeated stress on the knee. A change in the frequency, intensity, or duration of physical activity, such as running or cycling longer distances or exercising more days per week, can also bring on this condition. Poor exercise practices or improper sports training or equipment may also be risk factors. Muscle imbalance or weakness, misalignment in the kneecap or leg, and problems with the feet are associated with a higher risk for developing this condition as well people who are overweight. In some cases, direct trauma to the kneecap or dislocation of the knee can lead to runner’s knee. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

[ Keeper 2016 ]

[ Health

HOW IS RUNNER’S KNEE DIAGNOSED? After taking a medical history, the doctor will perform a physical examination to evaluate the knee’s stability and alignment, and to determine the location and scope of the pain and swelling. An X-ray can reveal abnormalities in the position and alignment of the kneecap, and if instability is suspected, a CT scan may be ordered. An MRI can also be useful in diagnosing runner’s knee, as it can determine the extent of softening or injury to the cartilage in the kneecap. OPTIONS FOR TREATING RUNNER’S KNEE • The RICE technique–rest, ice, compression and elevation–is the first step in the treatment of runner’s knee. If you just can’t rest then try relative rest and decrease your overall volume of activity. • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen or naproxen, can help to decrease pain and swelling. Read and follow all label directions. • Avoid bent knee exercises such as squats and deep knee bends.

The main symptom of patellofemoral pain syndrome is knee pain, especially when sitting with bent knees, squatting, jumping, or using

the stairs (especially going down stairs). Some people with runner’s knee may also experience occasional knee buckling, in which the knee suddenly gives way and doesn’t support your body weight. People with runner’s knee may also describe popping, catching, or a grinding sensation in the knee when walking or moving.

• Strengthen the muscles the help you control your knee. This includes strengthening the quadricep muscles (focus on the medial thigh

may be recommended. Most of the time the surgical procedure will be minimally invasive, using arthroscopic surgical techniques. RETURN TO RUNNING

Photo Credit: © pololia / Dollar Photo Club

When you return to running start slow and be patient. Remember the rules for returning to running: 1. Pain that increases during a walking or running session should be avoided and the activity should be reduced or stopped. 2. Joint pain should not persist or increase by 24 hours after exercise. 3. If you have pre-existing mild joint pain (>3 points out of a 10 scale), the pain should not worsen during the exercise session or last into the next day. 4. If the pain causes a limp or a compensatory gait change, the exercise volume should be reduced or the exercise stopped until a normal gait pattern occurs. doing seated straight leg raises with your toe out) and hip abductors (gluteus medius). Working with a skilled physical therapist can be very helpful.

Good luck and happy running! Stephen T. Kirk, MD. received an undergraduate degree in exercise and sports science from the University of Utah. He completed his medical degree at the University of Iowa. After medical school, Dr. Kirk returned to Utah where he completed a family medicine residency at Utah Valley Family Medicine followed by a sports medicine fellowship at Utah Valley Sports Medicine and Orthopedics in Provo. Personally, Dr. Kirk is an active athlete, once a football and rugby player, he has now turned to distance running.

• Controlling the kneecap with tape or bracing may help. • Evaluate and modify the way you run. Try increasing your cadence and shortening your stride. Most cases do not require surgery. However, if the cartilage in the kneecap is damaged or the runner has misalignment issues, surgery

The sole of the shoe combines Mizuno Fan Wave technology with U4iC (pronounced euphoric) foam material for a ride that is more responsive than soft and with a good degree of stability, also thanks to the parallel flex grooves. The 10mm heel to toe drop makes it a good choice for heel and mid foot runners. Our testers were impressed with the svelte feeling for a shoe that could make a good training and racing day option for runners who need stability in their footwear.

This update brings New Balance’s new Fresh Foam technology to the very popular 1080 series. The Fresh Foam 1080 is a long distance, high feature daily training shoe that provides a smooth and cushioned ride. The upper is completely redesigned from engineered mesh, feeling true to size, and comfortable over long distances. Our testers found the Fresh Foam to be a tad more responsive than the materials used in the previous versions of this shoe.

Newton GRAVITY V WEIGHT: MEN’S 8.1 OZ. | WOMEN’S 6.7 OZ. CATEGORY: NEUTRAL | LIGHTWEIGHT | TRAINER PRICE: $175 WWW.NEWTONRUNNING.COM

The Gravity V’s are designed for neutral strikers who are looking for a durable and reliable shoe. The foundation of all Newton shoes is the Action/Reaction Technology generated via the lugs which increases spring, and promotes a forefoot strike that allows for a smooth ride on both roads and trails alike. Newton added more padding to the tongue as opposed to the previous Gravity IV’s, allowing for a much more comfortable feel whether you like to run sockless or not. As always, the rest of the material is very breathable. The size is pretty much on par with previous models and the toe box has a neutral fit, allowing adequate movement, but not enough free space to be sliding around with every step. Our testers recommend the Gravity V to runners who are looking for a supportive shoe that can handle high mileage.

Nike LUNARTEMPO 2 WEIGHT: MEN’S 7.4 OZ. | WOMEN’S 6.1 OZ. CATEGORY: NEUTRAL | LIGHTWEIGHT PRICE: $100 WWW.NIKE.COM

The Nike LunarTempo 2 is a lightweight cushioned trainer designed to hug your feet. Nearly identical to the previous model, the LunarTempo 2’s are built on top of soft Lunarlon foam, and encase your feet in Nike’s seamless Flymesh upper with Flywire Cables. The only real changes to this shoe are in the upper where a larger Nike logo covers an area once occupied by ventilation holes, and some trim along the edges of the upper running underneath the laces. The toe box feels tight, which can be expected when wearing shoes designed to hug your feet. Our testers found this shoe to be great for mid to low mileage training, and possibly as a casual racing shoe.

Saucony KINVARA 7 WEIGHT: MEN’S 7.7 OZ. | WOMEN’S 6.6 OZ. CATEGORY: NEUTRAL | LIGHTWEIGHT PRICE: $110 WWW.SAUCONY.COM

This 7th version of Saucony’s extremely popular Kinvara boasts a handful of significant changes from the previous versions. The most awaited change is the move to Saucony’s new EVERUN foam material that is significantly denser and firmer than previous models, making this the most durable Kinvara to date. Our testers took the Kinvara through paved roads and groomed gravel trails, and found it to perform well on long runs, quick tempos and everything in between. Updates to the Kinvara 7 did not change the true character of this shoe, a very lightweight, responsive and durable training/racing shoe.

The Pearl Izumi E:MOTION Road N0 v2 is a progressive upgrade to the racinginfluenced shoe in the E:MOTION line up released last year. The N0 v2 is still built on the same unique midsole TOP geometry. A newer Strobel board PICK and assembling process has aided SPRING 2016 in lightening up the lower half of the shoe, giving the N0 v2 a softer, smoother, and enhanced flexible feel under foot. A new 3-D print seamless upper eliminates all heat and gluing processes used previously. Runners appreciated the N0 v2 simple, UPDATE light, and soft upper, making this a no-frills shoe built for SPRING 2016 running fast, and the real deal for racing and speedwork.

The Forza is Skechers Performance’s first stability shoe. It features a twopart midsole with a firm Resalyte medial post which provides stability while providing a fluid heel-to-toe transition. The Resalyte post is surrounded by Skechers Performance’s new 5Gen midsole which gives the GOrun Forza a creditable amount of cushioning coupled with responsiveness. A one-piece upper adorned with several well-placed hot melt overlays keeps a runner’s foot comfortably secured and well-centered over the shoe’s platform. Our testers appreciated the stable and secure fit of the Forza, while still feeling quite lightweight.

8 QUESTIVAL QUESTIONS By Melissa McGibbon

If you wake up in Mexico but you had no intention of going there the day before, chances are you’re involved in some kind of trouble—or you signed up for Questival. As your annual race calendar fills up, you may want to leave room for the third annual Cotopaxi Questival Adventure Race in Salt Lake City or a nearby city with an upcoming race. 1. WHAT IS QUESTIVAL? Questival is a self-guided 24-hour adventure race (see: grownup scavenger hunt that is also kid friendly) where teams compete to complete their choice of the 300ish challenges provided by the Cotopaxi team via smartphone app. There isn’t a requirement to do the full 24-hour event in order to qualify for prizes and to have a great experience. You can make the race as short as you would like it to be, so kids can join in the Tom Foolery. Participants can download the free app anytime, but the challenges are not loaded until the race begins. Examples of challenges include anything from posting silly selfies, volunteering at local charities, hiking, eating bugs, and reenacting the spaghetti scene from Lady and the Tramp. Fair warning to the local residents: Many of the challenges involve a surprising amount stranger cajolery—innocent bystanders who happen to be going about their lives near Questival participants. The Challenge Scale ranges from Easy (one point) to Extreme (13 points) with Medium (two points) and Difficult (five points) in between.

the judges. The judges are peers, Cotopaxi staff, charity partners, city representatives, and past Questival participants from other cities. Even if you’re not in it to win it, there’s plenty of motivation to take part. Who wouldn’t want to spend a Saturday attempting to have the most fun you could possibly have? 2. WHO DOES THIS? You, that’s who! Groups of two to six people create teams to complete the tasks. Smart teams from last year’s event created hashtags for team names so they could keep track of everything they did on social media. The festival is open to the public, but participation in the scavenger hunt, swag bag (backpack, stickers, temporary tattoos, etc.) and access to the race challenges on the smartphone app is dependent on registration. 3. WHEN? April 8–9 Salt Lake City May 13–14 Denver June 10–11 Portland June 24–25 Seattle September 16–17 San Diego September 30–October 1 San Francisco November 11–12 Phoenix

Teams win prizes by completing tasks in creative ways. Team rank is based on the number of points they complete and how well they impress Continued on page 24 22

4. WHY WOULD SOMEONE PARTICIPATE IN THESE KINDS OF SHENANIGANS? Do some good and have fun doing it. Oh, and there are some pretty neat prizes, too. Prizes include Cotopaxi gear and gear from Questival race partners, and the winning team from each Questival receives more than $10,000 in prizes, including an international travel voucher for each team member. Seth King, VP of Events for Questival, says this event is unlike any other in the world. “It’s a way for people to be inspired, to get outdoors and familiarize themselves with the environment around them, which can go unnoticed. Doing outdoor challenges and activities under the guise of a ‘presented challenge’ lowers the barrier to entry. It gives people the gumption to try rock climbing, camping, hiking, canoeing, etc. It doesn’t force their hand, but strongly encourages it.” 5. WHERE DOES SALT LAKE CITY QUESTIVAL START? Sandy City Promenade, 10000 Centennial Parkway, Sandy, Utah 84070 6. HOW DO YOU ENTER QUESTIVAL? Visit Cotopaxi.com to register or type “Questival” into Google and click on the “I’m feeling lucky” button. Depending on when you purchase your tickets, they are around $30 for adults, $15 for kids. Kids and adults of all ages are welcome to participate. Early Bird discounts are available. 7. HOW DO YOU WIN QUESTIVAL? The Rules • Complete as many tasks on the list provided as you can. • Document each task completion via the Questival app. • Have fun!

The more points you accrue by completing tasks, the better chance you’ll have to win. The more difficult the challenge, the more points your team will earn. To be judged, your team must rank in the Top 10. Your final team score is based on points, flags, peer score, and the score from outside judges. Each team starts out with 100 points in the flags category. If your team does something that causes a flag to your challenge, you’ll receive notification that you’ve been flagged, which means you can either submit the challenge as-is or redo the challenge from the beginning. Points only matter until you get into the Top 10. Once you’re in the Top 10, it’s up to the judges. The key is to stay in the Top 10 where points are concerned AND to win the affection of the judges by cleverly completing your challenges. 8. WHAT IS COTOPAXI? Cotopaxi is a local company that creates innovative outdoor products and experiences that fund sustainable poverty alleviation, move people to do good, and inspire adventure. Cotopaxi funds solutions that address the most persistent needs of those living in extreme poverty. Giving is core to their model. They focus their efforts on global poverty alleviation and give targeted grants to advance health, education, and livelihood initiatives around the world. Q&A WITH THE STARS OF THE ST. GEORGE MARATHON

Amber Green and Aaron Metler By Alexa V. Morgan

St. George is a well-known marathon that people enter a lottery and travel just to compete in, but the race’s real stars are locals Amber Green and Aaron Metler who made history in 2015 as the only man and women ever to win the race three times. Born and raised in St. George, Amber Green is a stay-at-home mom of three boys who made the transition from casual runner to elite competitor, culminating in her recent appearance at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Aaron Metler, a native of Michigan, moved to St. George for a job with the city’s recreation department and discovered his passion for marathon running with the help of the community.

AMBER GREEN How did you start running competitively? I was always active, but I wasn’t a runner. The reason I got into running was the initial challenge of completing a marathon. I signed up for the St. George Marathon and started training for it. I was a regular back-ofthe-pack runner just in it for the experience.

I’ve done about 35 marathons: San Diego, California International, Sand Hollow, Grandma’s Marathon in Minnesota twice, and the Boston Marathon five times. I’ve won the Tri-State and Utah Valley Marathons, and Park City twice. I’ve been to Japan three times for the Ibigawa, and I think I’ve done 13 St. George Marathons. Describe your training regimen. I have a really great coach, Iain Hunter, and he’s been mentoring me. I’ve been doing consistent training and he tailors my training to be very marathon-specific. I’ve been running between 90 and 100-plus miles per week. A lot of those days include morning and night runs. I have key runs on Tuesdays (tempo run), Thursdays (speed workout), and Saturdays (long run); those are my harder days. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are easier days where I can run with my friends.

As we started having kids and I was a full-time mom, running became my outlet. It became my sanity, just to get out and run. I honestly never foresaw that I would be where I am now.

What was the process of qualifying for the Olympic Trials? My first attempt was in 2014 at the Boston Marathon. The qualifying standard at the time was under 2 hours 43 minutes, and I came in 2:43:27, so I was off about a second per mile. I had trained so much for that race and really thought I could pull it off. But you do what you can on race day and that’s all I had that day. I made four attempts at certified marathons, and on my fifth attempt in Minnesota last June I finally qualified with a 2:41:17.

How did you take running to the next level? Anything you love, you’re going to get better at. I just fell in love with running—with the running lifestyle, the culture, my friends, the way I was living healthier, eating better, sleeping better. I love the freedom of being out on the road and in nature. I loved what I was doing so much that it kind of overrode those obstacles and hard times.

What did the experience mean to you? When I first decided to go after this time standard, it was just another goal in the future, kind of like my first marathon. I just wanted to see if I could do it. When I failed the first time and I was so close, I was still on fire and wanted to try again. Then I tried again and didn’t get it and was kind of fading with my resolve. I put four months of hard training into it,

and my family sacrificed so much that I could do this. I didn’t know if it was worth it. January 2015 was a turning point. I had to make the decision to shelf it or keep trying. I was tired, I was injured and had to take time off. Ultimately, I was hungry for it. I just wanted it so bad.

I came in 63rd with a 2:49:23. The only downer was my time, only because it wasn’t the goal time I felt I was capable of and on a day that you’ve worked months for you want to showcase what you can do. But being part of the race was amazing. It was incredible to be with the elite athletes and see them in action, see their bodies, and how they warm up. What makes the St. George Marathon so special? When I was growing up, the house that we lived in was right along the course. I know every turn; I know every bump in the road. It’s my hometown and anyone who has run it will tell you it’s just a beautiful course. I love the warm weather. I love it here.

AARON METLER How did you develop an interest in running? I started pretty young. In middle school, I ran a good mile and my gym teacher suggested I go out for track. I ended up really liking it and loving competing and training. It became a lifelong thing for me.

Tell us about some memorable moments in your running career. I actually won the first marathon I entered, which was the 2010 St. George Marathon. I trained hard enough to give myself a chance to be up there with the leaders. I didn’t expect to be in first place, but I took the lead at Mile 7 and led the whole way in. What inspired me was this town, the passion that the people of St. George have for the marathon. Seeing how hard everyone works to put on this event made me want to participate as an athlete. I’ve now run St. George five times and the Chicago and Boston Marathons. I don’t do a lot of races because I like to train hard and put everything towards one big race. What do you enjoy most about running? I really love the mental battle. Every day, regardless of whether it’s a race day or a training run by yourself, you always go through the struggle where your body is fatigued, but your mind can overcome the fatigue and you can run through it.

What principles of running also apply to your everyday life? Dedication and consistency in anything you do is what makes you successful. If I don’t feel my best or if the weather’s bad, I still go out every morning and do what I gotta do running wise. It’s taught me the importance of sticking with it when things get hard—in the workplace and with family stuff. What role have you played in the development of running in St. George? I’m the coordinator of all races and special events. That’s one thing I love about being an athlete: sharing how much good running has done for me and getting people involved with fitness. As a city, we offer a wide range of programs—free family bike rides, team relays, 1-milers for kids, triathlons, half marathons—so that people of all ages and abilities can be involved. This year’s marathon will be very special as it’s the 40th. We’re hoping to allow 8,000 runners. Is there a home field advantage? Definitely. You have all your family and friends who come out to watch you, and your own house and bed to sleep in before and after the marathon. I get to train the course every weekend during the heavy training season. Why is St. George a great place for runners? The marathon is like the Super Bowl of our town. People get behind it unlike any other event here. The weather and climate make it a great place to run year-round. That draws a lot of people to train here. Overall, the outdoor vibe from the community is fantastic. Alexa V. Morgan has been a freelance writer in southern Utah since 2011. MINDFULNESS

How Runners Can Use It to Gain an Edge By Natalie Graves, AM, LCSW, CADC

What is mindfulness? The practice of mindfulness comes from Buddhist mediation. Research shows mindfulness therapy has numerous uses, including reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Jon KabatZinn, founder of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, defines mindfulness as, “paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.” The literature on mindfulness has focused on the development of mindfulness practices that help a person focus his or her attention to gain control over his or her mind—promoting mental well being in the process.

Applying mindfulness techniques to sports has benefits in and out of competition. Mindfulness training allows an athlete to focus on an object and maintain that focus over time. Further, mindfulness provides the skill to have awareness of self and environment. It takes into account the athlete’s setting, more in line with social work principles, allowing it to reach beyond traditional sports psychology.

How many times have you heard that sports are mental as well as physical? Athletes need more than physical training to compete. Incorporating mindfulness in your training can provide focus to give you a winning edge.

In my practice, I teach athletes to embrace and accept uncomfortable or unpleasant thoughts and feelings rather than training them to deny or attempt to control them, as well as become more aware of the feelings and thoughts in that very moment. Athletes of all sports—including runners—find ways to use mindfulness as part of their daily training. More times than not, when I introduce mindfulness to an athlete it’s a new concept. After applying some of the techniques, they find it becomes a valued addition to their preparation.

MENTAL HEALTH AND SPORT

BENEFITS OF MINDFULNESS

Athletes have turned to mental health professionals to assist with performance for decades. In the early 1990s, Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson asked sport psychologist George Mumford to teach the players the skill of mindfulness. Coach Jackson’s success with the Chicago Bulls was undeniable. Two-time U.S. Olympian in longdistance track events Elva Dryer, who took second to Deena Kaastor in the 10,000-meter run at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team trials, uses mindfulness techniques for a half hour before every run.

A variety of studies have supported the benefits of mindfulness:

APPLYING MINDFULNESS TO SPORTS

30

[ Keeper 2016 ]

[ Training

sportsguidemag.com ]

• Stress reduction. Thirty-nine studies indicated mindfulness was effective in reducing stress.

• Focus. Another study found that experienced mindfulness meditators had better performance on all attentional functioning.

• More cognitive flexibility. One study found people who

practice mindfulness meditation appear to develop the skill of self-observation.

• Reduced rumination. There are several studies that suggest

that mindfulness reduces rumination, or repetitively thinking about upsetting aspects of a situation. Meditators reported fewer depressive symptoms, improved memory as well as maintaining attention during performance tasks.

ENHANCING YOUR RUNNING PERFORMANCE Incorporating mindfulness into your training has diverse benefits. Learning the skill of being present in the moment can allow you to embrace the task, whether it’s running a 5K or longer, without internal or external distractions negatively affecting you. Mindfulness can benefit your running by reducing stress on and off the track. As academic research and athletes have recorded consistently, mindfulness contributed to the reduction of perceived stress. We know how stress can adversely affect performance; having a method to counteract that would be ideal for your run. Plus, using mindfulness techniques can help you cope and deal with pain while running. Sakyong Miphan, author of Running with the Mind of Meditation: Lesson for Training Body and Mind, provides an excellent example in his book. He discusses how during his very first marathon, he got a blister on his foot. For many, this could have been a source of great physical and emotional pain. The mind could easily create major fear and anxiety about how this would affect performance. Many would advise attempting to block the pain or pretending not to feel in. In contrast, mindfulness taught Miphan to pay attention to the pain while not allowing it to take over his mind. This can be very powerful in the midst of pain and stress. People engaged in physical activity and sports can expect to experience highs and lows. Mindfulness can aid in managing the disappointment of past shortcomings by allowing you to free your mind and commit to what’s in the present moment.

3 WAYS TO START USING MINDFULNESS

1. Start with breathing. Begin with just two to five minutes at a

time. Find a quiet place. Keep your back straight yet relaxed. Focus on the air moving in and out of your body. When the mind allows thought to shift your focus, gently move your mind back to the breathing. As you master five minutes, increase your time. A good goal is 20 minutes. You can do this in the morning, evening, or before competing. Be patient with yourself as this skill takes time.

2. Visualization. Write down short words or phrases. When

Olympian Michael Johnson was going for his record-setting 200-meter race he wrote, “Keep head down, pump my arms, explode, react like a bullet.” This is a go-to for my patients. I recommend reading what you wrote the week of your race or competition.

3. Pay more attention. This seems obvious, but with

smartphones it’s very difficult to be present in our daily living. I recommend unplugging and finding 30 minutes with no phones, laptops, etc. each day. Focus on nature, people watching or watching your current setting. When practicing mindfulness breathing, commit to six months to maximize result. Visualizing and paying attention could yield results in a shorter length of time. Adopt mindfulness as part of your training to give the edge you need.

Natalie Graves has a private practice specializing in athletes’ mental health & wellness. She received her master’s degree from the University Of Chicago School Of Social Service Administration and her Bachelor’s degree from Chicago State University. Natalie is also the founder and president of the 1 in 4 PROJECT. This organization is comprised of social workers focused on bringing awareness of mental health and wellness to the sport community.

DOES HEART RATE TRAINING STILL MATTER? By Aaron Lovell

Perhaps the bright toes of barely unboxed running shoes peep from your closet or sit stationed at the ready next to the front door. Winter’s toxic air inversions and slick patches of blacktop that have keep runners sequestered on treadmills have all but disappeared. Cool morning air, mountain sunrises, and the reemergence of nature’s paint palette call us from our winter dens. Racing season is nearly upon us. Whether you’re a newbie looking to run your first 5K, a weekend warrior with sights set on progressive PRs, or a seasoned pro gunning for podium finishes, the right training is what will get you there. With so many training method readily available today, it’s hard to know what works and what doesn’t when it comes to getting faster and stronger. But one method that’s stuck around through nearly every training fad—since the 1930s, in fact—is heart rate (HR) training. WE ASK THE QUESTION: DOES THIS TRAINING METHOD REALLY WORK? At its most basic level, HR training is about determining a target HR, a desired range for aerobic exercise, then exercising within this range. The idea is that training within that range will maximize the benefits of your workout, leading to greater fitness—and faster race times. But is HR training really all it’s cracked up to be? Maybe not, according to Lisa Menninger, a Salt Lake City coach and wellness consultant. “I am not a fan of heart rate training,” she says. “Due to the fact that heart rate can be so variable because of things unrelated to the training, I do not find it particularly useful.” Training and heart rate are affected by nearly all aspects of life: sleep,

stress, nutrition, emotional state, etc. So instead, Menninger encourages athletes to know their bodies and train based on how they feel rather than trying to meet prescribed metrics. Athletes can come to know their bodies through a lens of self-care, she says. Observing how your workouts are affected by emotional stress, diet, and other aspects of life helps attune you to your body’s response to effort in light of these variables. “Training does not exist in a vacuum,” Menninger says. “It is best to know on a given day how you are feeling and then do your work based on effort.” She believes that HR or GPS watches can be valuable training tools, but used too often, they remove you from the vital process of knowing your body and training according to how it feels. Jason Miller, a physical therapist with the Runner’s Clinic at the University of Utah Orthopaedic Center, agrees. “Running is one of those forms of exercise that’s so basic in that you don’t need a lot of stuff,” Miller says. “Add in the component of the HR monitor, and now you’ve got more to think about. It’s important to listen to your body and not just rely on technology.” WHEN TO USE HEART RATE TRAINING In spite of that, both Menninger and Miller believe there is a place for HR training. Menninger encourages athletes to use it during recovery periods to prevent overtraining. Miller believes two groups of athletes can benefit from it: overzealous new runners who might otherwise injure themselves by repeated all-out

When it comes to racing, Menninger says her athletes find greater PR success when they are focused on their bodies rather than metrics. “Many times an athlete I coach will run a race or workout based on effort and a strategy we discuss together,” she says. “Inevitably they run personal bests because they are not allowing the watch to limit their brains by constantly quantifying the effort. If you do plan to incorporate HR training into your workouts, remember that it is only a tool, not the only tool. To start you’ll need to figure your maximum HR. The best way to do this is by having a V02 Max Test performed by a physician. Short of that, Miller suggests this formula to calculate max HR: 2050–0.5(age). If I’m 38, then my max HR equals 2050–0.5(38), or 186. Target HR is about 60–80% of max HR, so the target for most of my runs should be 112–149.

Similarly, Miller emphasizes that HR is only a tool, and athletes should go with what they feel and not just rely on the HR monitor. In fact, a monitor isn’t even necessary if runners use what he calls the Talk Test. If you can still talk when running with only occasional need to catch your breath, you’re doing it right. “It’s always more important to listen to your body,” he says. Menninger suggests having a personal coach who can help you make the best decisions on how HR training should be incorporated and when to push yourself. Short of that, Menninger says, “it is best to know your body and use effort-based workouts.”
