STARTING LINE FROM THE EDITOR For those of us who love summiting peaks and skiing knee deep pow, venturing into Utah’s backcountry is a worthwhile risk. But when a sketchy situation escalates into a dangerous one, we must make the call: go on or turn back. Whether it’s skipping a summit when a storm is imminent or not skiing down a line that seems likely to slide, making smart, fast decisions is key to surviving and thriving in the outdoors. A favorite story from this issue covers this topic as the author struggles with whether or not to climb Moab’s Ancient Art after a storm (pg. 10). Then read on my favorite fall backpacking overnights near Salt Lake City (pg. 12) and get the details on local ski swaps (pg. 26) and ski resort updates (pg. 8). Read even more stories on our website sportsguidemag.com and follow us on Instagram @sportsguidemag. Happy adventuring! Jenny Willden

Needles Gondola, Snowbasin Resort

The 2015-16 season is huge for upgrades and new programs at Utah’s 14 ski resorts! Over $100 million in onmountain capital improvements are coming to state this year, including the biggies of combining of Canyons and Park City into America’s largest resort and Snowbird’s new mountaintop dining facility. Available Tuesday–Thursday from January 5– April 3, 2016. eaglepointresort.com PARK CITY Vail Resorts is transforming Park City Mountain Resort and Canyons Resort this season with $50 million in upgrades, including connecting the two resorts to create Park City, the largest resort in the United States. The centerpiece of these extensive upgrades is the Quicksilver Gondola, an eight-passenger gondola that leaves from the bottom of Silverlode on the Park City side of the mountain and ends at Flat Iron on the former Canyons side. Lifts are being upgraded too, including King Con, a four-person lift that will be replaced with a six-person high-speed detachable chair. The Motherlode lift is being upgraded from a fixed-grip triple to a four-person high-speed detachable. On the dining side, a new eatery called Miners Camp replaces PCMR’s Snow Hut next to the new Quicksilver Gondola. It includes 500 indoor seats and a top-of-the-line kitchen. On the former Canyons Resort side, Red Pine Lodge will be renovated to add 250 additional indoor seats. Additional snowmaking to account for gondola traffic rounds out the ambitious plan. Park City also just launched Epic SchoolKids in Utah, which gives all Utah kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade five free days of skiing and riding at Park City. It includes a free lesson during the month of January as well. parkcitymountain.com

The Lodge will open in time for ski season. snowbird.com SNOWBASIN RESORT Celebrating 75 years this winter, Snowbasin has three big celebrations planned for their guests: Proclamation Day on November 27, which will mark the official day of the 75th Anniversary; the 75th Anniversary Release Party on December 16 where they’ll unveil the signature 75th Anniversary beer and whiskey; and the 75th Birthday Celebration on January 8 that will feature children’s activities, live music, and birthday cake! snowbasin.com SOLITUDE Deer Valley officially took ownership in May and is planning a list of capital improvements, the most exciting of which is a new high-speed quad Summit Express chairlift to replace the current fixed-grip double chairlift. This provides quicker, easier access to Honeycomb Canyon, an in-bound area that skis like the backcountry. They also built a new run from the top of the Apex Express chairlift to the bottom of the new Summit Express, shortening the travel time to Honeycomb Canyon. Deer Valley is also revamping and remodeling the Moonbeam Lodge Restaurant, and completely updating the menus at all resort restaurants. skisolitude.com

most eerie desert spires, fins, and towers, and make for some dirty and dangerous climbing. I came here to climb Ancient Art. It’s easily the most popular of the Fisher Towers, and I’ve had the desire to climb it since I learned of its existence. The corkscrew summit is pinnacled in mid-heaven via the Stolen Chimney route and provides 360 degrees of bedeviling exposure once you’re on top. This squiggly four-pitch 5.10 trad route has a convex summit with circumference of maybe three feet. Sounds intriguing, right? My friend, Julie, and I had been planning this climbing trip for months. I trained for it. I wanted the photos. I committed to writing an article about it. I drove 250 miles from Salt Lake City to Castle Valley to do it. We diligently checked the forecasts. We even had a strategic plan to beat the crowds. But none of that mattered.

Though there was only a slight chance of precipitation forecasted for the late afternoon, a weak storm had passed through overnight, killing our chance at an early summit that morning.

HOODOO HOLDOFF (Not) Climbing Ancient Art By Melissa McGibbon We stood in the parking lot at the base of the Fisher Towers early in the morning of our big ascent day and stared at the fecund clouds in the sky. Raindrops peppered the dusty ground. A gust of wind rushed past us. Dark clouds moved swiftly in the stormy wind. The twisted muddy spires were soaked. The Fisher Towers feature some of the

There is nothing else like Ancient Art on Earth and I deeply, desperately, defiantly wanted to climb it that day. Not the day after, not next month. Right then. Maybe, just maybe, it would be okay to go for it? Maybe the rain hadn’t fully saturated the muddy sandstone? That’s my high tolerance for risk and the escalating commitment speaking. I have a high risk-reward ratio. Was it worth the risk? Was I making a decision that was clear-headed and nonemotional? Definitely not. Though it was heartbreaking to back away, it’s the kind of decision everyone has to make at

sportsguidemag.com ]

one time or another in order to stay safe while pursuing adventures with higher levels of risk. What’s the worst that could happen? On the morning of August 1, 2014, Unofficial Networks broke news that The Cobra, a 60-foot spire resembling a reared cobra snake, had toppled during a heavy storm at the Fisher Towers. The Cobra was the smallest of the towers, situated between Ancient Art and Cottontail Tower. The Cobra falling down was only a matter of time… and geology. The problem with climbing these hoodoo formations is that they’re made of dark red Cutler sandstone and topped by harder Moenkopi sandstone and covered in hardened mud, which makes them too risky to climb if it has recently rained. I knew it was not a good idea to climb Ancient Art that day, but I still entertained the idea. This is a common theme among outdoor enthusiasts. Why do we do that? Bruce Tremper, the Retired Director of the Utah Avalanche Center, discusses The Human Factor in his book Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain and breaks down heuristics in backcountry recreation decision making that are very applicable to other adventure sports. Even in the face of staggering proof that danger is ahead some people will proceed anyway. Why? According to Tremper, because they are bad at practicing evidence-based decision making and critical analysis—they have reckless summit fever, they have Kodak courage, and/or they have been extremely lucky in the past and mistake their luck for skill. For instance, in investigating avalanche accidents, Tremper was able to determine that invariably victims either didn’t notice the danger or had unrealistic perceptions about their ability to deal with it. “I’m not sure what it is about avalanches, but people invariably overestimate their skills,” says Tremper. Not surprisingly, 93 percent of avalanche fatalities are men. Why only seven percent women? Because most women are not as likely to take such risks. The vagaries of human emotion aside, some people are just not thinking at all. Those who lack the education and self-

awareness to learn about the hazards make up two-thirds of the fatalities in the backcountry—simple ignorance. In other words, smart people make dumb mistakes and dumb people make dumb mistakes.

CLIMBING ESSENTIALS

One of the biggest pitfalls of being an experienced surfer, climber, paraglider, skier, (insert your favorite sport), is that while you may be talented at that sport, it’s unlikely that you are a professional guide in that field or hold a PhD in oceanography, geology, anemology, atmospheric science, or (insert related area of study). If you are a bonafide expert, you fall in the 98th percentile, meaning general recreationists will make up the majority of fatalities in outdoor sports accidents, while it is very rare that a professional dies.

Lolë Women Sita Tank Top This piece keeps you cool and breezy while you reach for the summit; it has a built-in bra with a crossover back for optimal breathability and adjustable straps. It’s made from an eco-friendly blend of polyester, Tencel® Lyocell, and cotton and is naturally antibacterial and moisture wicking. $70 lolewomen.com

Tremper points out that when someone dies in an outdoor recreation accident, the news reports will mention whether the victim was experienced at the sport or not, but how often do you also hear about their level of education with the environment they were in?

Stonewear Designs Sprinter Capri Capri tights are the best climbing apparel for ladies. The Sprinter is comfortable, stretchy, fast-drying, and made from recycled compression power fabric. They have a wide, contrasting waistband that features a hidden zip pocket. $72 stoneweardesigns.com

There is a big difference between being an experienced climber and expert climber. In Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers: The Story of Success, he illustrates through several case studies and empirical scientific evidence that researchers have settled on what they believe is the magic number of hours of practice required to reach true expertise—it’s 10,000. Unless you are friends with the likes of Alex Honnold (Hi Alex!), you probably don’t know too many people who have more than 10,000 hours of practice climbing. Though it was disappointing that we couldn’t climb Ancient Art that day, the good news is that it’s much more stable than The Cobra and will probably be around at least long enough for me to go back in a few weeks to make the purchase. Perhaps we all need to be shut out sometimes to be reminded about extracting emotions from our decisions when it comes to lofty outdoor pursuits. We found a few other ways to entertain ourselves in Moab. As it turns out there are other things to do there besides climb. Who knew? We’ll be back soon to slay the dragon and that means I’ll have more time to rough up my hands and practice cam removal between now and then.

AUTUMN ESCAPES

4 Overnight Backpacking Trips Near SLC Story and Photos By Jenny Willden

Fall foliage, fewer crowds, and crisp air are just a few reasons to love hiking and backpacking in autumn. Whether you’re new to backpacking or a seasoned overnighter, these close–to–home destinations are perfect weekend escapes. When camping in fall, come prepared for cold nights and rapidly changing conditions to ensure a good experience. For the backpacking averse, these trips make great day hikes.

THE CLASSIC Lake Blanche One of Salt Lake’s best hikes; the trail to Lake Blanche is steep and scenic with gorgeous aspen trees changing to brilliant shades of orange and yellow this time of year. There are plenty of camping spots near the lake, just be sure to set up your site at least 200 feet from the lake as it’s a watershed. Overnighting gives you more time to explore lakes Lillian and Florence, or even take on the extra challenge of summiting 10,320-foot Sundial Peak.

THE CLOSE TO HOME Red Pine Lake

Getting There: The hike begins at White Pine Trailhead, 5.5 miles up Little Cottonwood Canyon—just below Snowbird. Fees: none Distance: 7.3 miles RT Difficulty: Strenuous Elevation Gain: 1965 feet Dogs or Swimming Allowed: No

This trail starts off easy-ish and crosses a couple footbridges over creeks before inclining steeply through colored aspens and pines. Breaks in the trees offer dramatic downcanyon views of the Salt Lake Valley. Continue hiking to lower Red Pine Lake where ample campsites surround the glacial lake. If crowded, a less-defined trail to Upper Red Pine Lake offers a few campsites too.

Not tired yet? Hike to the summit of the Pfiefferhorn at 11,320 feet. This difficult trail features steep climbs, loose rocks, knife-edge ridges, and dramatic 360-degree views.

THE QUICKIE Notch Lake This mostly downhill trail passes four alpine lakes along the way: Clegg, Dean, Rieds, and Notch. It’s great for beginners as you can camp near any of the lakes along the way, making it as short or long a trip as you like. Notch Lake is the most crowded for camping, but is massive and offers great fishing, flat camping spots, and pre-built firepits. Or continue on to Bench Lake, but note that the trail steepens dramatically here so it’s not advised for beginners or those with young children.

sportsguidemag.com ]

Getting There: Located in Big Cottonwood Canyon at the bottom of the S-curve. Trail begins at Mill B Trailhead. Follow signs for Lake Blanche Trail. Fees: none Distance: 6 miles RT Difficulty: Moderate Elevation Gain: 2700 feet Dogs or Swimming Allowed: No

Getting There: Found in the High Uintas, take Hwy 150 east for 29.1 miles from Kamas to the Bald Mountain Trailhead parking lot on the left. Follow sign to left for Notch Mountain Trail. Fees: $6 cash Distance: 4.6 miles RT to Notch Lake or 5.6 miles RT to Bench Lake Difficulty: Easy Elevation Gain: -600 feet Dogs or Swimming Allowed: Yes

SNOW and “I took my Dartmouth diploma and left an engineering job on the east coast for a job as an Alta lifty. I planned to stay for one winter. I fell in love with my wife and my job with lift maintenance and I’m still here 13 years later. I came for the snow. I stay because this place is family.”

THE LONG HAUL Mount Timpanogos

Getting There: For the Timponeeke Trailhead, drive up American Fork Canyon, take a right at the fork in the road and drive until you see a sign for the Timpoonee Campground. Take this road to a paved parking lot at the trailhead. Fees: $6 cash Distance: 15 miles RT Difficulty: Strenuous Elevation Gain: 4371 feet Dogs Allowed: Yes

The Timpooneke Trail features lush vegetation, a waterfall, abundant mountain goats, and gorgeous views. Start early (4 a.m.) to beat the crowds, or begin later if not summiting the first day. Prime camping spots are scattered along the way or in the large meadow below the peak.

Reaching the top of Timp—the Wasatch Range’s second highest peak at 11,572 feet—is tough in terms of steep, long climbs, but you won’t need to scramble to summit! A dilapidated shack marks the top, and the views of the valley here are unparalleled.

Mizuno WAVE ENIGMA 5

New Balance VAZEE PACE

WEIGHT: MEN’S 10.9 OZ. | WOMEN’S 8.8 OZ. CATEGORY: NEUTRAL / CUSHIONED PRICE: $150 WWW.MIZUNOUSA.COM

WEIGHT: MEN’S 7.5 OZ. | WOMEN’S 6.5 OZ. CATEGORY: NEUTRAL / LIGHTWEIGHT PRICE: $110 WWW.NEWBALANCE.COM

The Mizuno Wave Enigma 5 features a more cushioned midsole utilizing two new foam types, the u4icX and u4ic, to go along with a new u-shape full-length parallel wave that helps evenly disperse the forces at foot strike and provide a responsive feel. Also updated is the sock liner, which provides a comfortable, chafe-free fit, protecting the foot without causing any blistering. The toe box provides a somewhat narrow fit and the sizing also runs small, at least a half or even a full size smaller than the previous version. The Wave Enigma 5 is designed for high mileage runners or runners who simply desire extra cushioning.

The New Balance Vazee Pace replaces the 890 series in the New Balance performance line. This neutral performance trainer uses New Balance’s REVlite foam technology on an 890 base, combined with the new Zante upper. The upper is seamless and extremely breathable, keeping your feet cool even during long runs in heat. Itt has overlays throughout to keep your foot locked in, and the redesigned Zante upper hugs the midfoot before opening up into a wide and roomy toe box. A slightly wider heel may lead to slipping for some, however. Weighing in at 7.5 oz with a 6mm heel drop, this shoe is meant for speed; but, it can take the beating of a traditional trainer. Under testing, the Vazee Pace handled 15-mile long runs just as well as it handled track repeats. Overall, it’s a good new addition to the performance neutral market.

Newton AHA II WEIGHT: MEN’S 7.4 OZ | WOMEN’S 6.3 OZ. CATEGORY: NEUTRAL / LIGHTWEIGHT PRICE: $110 WWW.NEWTONRUNNING.COM

The Newton Aha 2 features a lower-profile design than many of the brand’s previous models, and hits a happy medium between lightness and cushioning. Newton lowers its traditional forefoot lugs with the Aha as part of its newer ‘Gateway’ models, allowing newcomers an opportunity to ease into the added metatarsal support. The shoe encourages a quick transition through the gait cycle, provides a responsive ride, and can be used for daily training and distance racing equally well.

Nike LUNARGLIDE 7 WEIGHT: MEN’S 9.8 OZ. | WOMEN’S 7.9 OZ. CATEGORY: STABILITY PRICE: $125 WWW.NIKE.COM

The Nike LunarGlide 7 offers a reliable combination of stability and cushioning for mild to moderate overpronation. An upper that features both re-engineered mesh and Flyknit material combined with a dual-density midsole featuring reengineered Lunarlon foam offers a secure, personalized fit while delivering a smooth and supportive transition throughout a runner’s gait. The shoe remains lightweight and versatile for those runners who require mild to moderate stability in a lightweight, daily trainer without compromising performance.

Pearl Izumi E:MOTION ROAD N3 WEIGHT: MEN’S 11.7 OZ. | WOMEN’S 10.2 OZ. CATEGORY: NEUTRAL PRICE: $130 WWW.PEARLIZUMI.COM

The Pearl Izumi E: Motion Road N3 draws from the success of previous models in the E:Motion line, offering a road trainer with maximum cushioning. The shoe boasts a seamless upper, wide toe-box, and luxurious cushioning sufficient for the long haul. Neutral runners will appreciate the accommodating ride.

Skechers GORUN ULTRA ROAD

Saucony RIDE 8 WEIGHT: MEN’S 9.4 OZ. | WOMEN’S 8.5 OZ. CATEGORY: NEUTRAL / LIGHTWEIGHT PRICE: $120 WWW.SAUCONY.COM

The Saucony Ride 8 offers runners a good balance between cushioning and responsiveness. This shoe uses SSL (Saucony Super Light) EVA foam in the midsole which reduces the overall weight of the shoe while providing a decent amount of energy return with every stride. The upper features a finer mesh than that used in the Ride 7 and also features Saucony’s FlexFilm seamless overlay which gives the shoe some added strength and support. The RUNDRY moisturewicking lining does a decent job of wicking away moisture and is relatively plush in the heel cup. The Ride 8 is a durable trainer designed for both speed and for higher mileage.

2015

WEIGHT: MEN’S 10.4 OZ. | WOMEN’S 8.3 OZ. CATEGORY: NEUTRAL PRICE: $110 WWW.SKECHERS.COM

The Skechers GORun Ultra Road is the newest, maximumcushion shoe released by the Skechers Performance Division. This shoe features Skechers Performance Resalyte material and is built in two pieces, which allows the shoe to have superior cushioning and also adds a layer of resiliency that gives the GORun Ultra Road a snappy response off the ground. A tight knit upper also provides a supportive fit without the use of unnecessary overlays. This upper is also roomy and easily accommodates a larger volume foot. The GoRun Ultra Road is good choice for a daily trainer or long distance mileage. [ sportsguidemag.com Gear ] Fall 2015 17

heel as the forefoot, eliminating the 2-to-1 drop from heel to forefoot that’s standard in many running shoes, while adding cushioning. He believes this reduces impact by helping people land softer. Many runners who’ve switched to Altras report a more comfortable run, including Golden’s cousin, Jeremy Howlett. Jeremy suffered from knee problems and hadn’t run in nearly five years. Golden was first building shoes with his toaster oven in his home and made a pair for Jeremy with the help of Village Shoemaker in Orem. After trying the shoes, Jeremy found he could run again. Golden Harper, founder of Altra.

POWERED BY ALTRA

How a Utah-made Shoe is Changing the Trail Running Game By Connie Lewis Trail running is rapidly gaining traction in the public conscious, but for Utah local and Altra Shoe founder, Golden Harper, it’s been a lifelong hobby. He began running trails at just five years old and defines the sport simply, “it involves running on an uneven, non manmade surface.” Basically hiking with a little adrenaline added. Altras have a huge following among trail runners, and Golden’s lifelong passion for the sport is one of many factors that influenced him to start the company. Altra designs and manufactures innovative trail and road running shoes, and you could say running shoes are in his blood because Golden spent his childhood around the running store his father owned. He remembers his dad constantly tinkering with the shoes to improve them, and Golden followed in his footsteps. He studied kinesiology, running technique, and running injuries as part of his Exercise Science degree. Through slow motion video analysis coupled with his running shoe experience, he found that many running shoes cause highimpact, improper running technique and inhibited proper movement by crowding

the toes. He set out to design a shoe that was not only comfortable, but could also reduce or eliminate common running problems. WHAT MAKES ALTRAS DIFFERENT? Golden says Altras differ from traditional models in two critical ways. First, the shoes have a foot-shaped toe box. Most shoes, running and hiking included, have a tapered toe box. Golden believes making it foot shaped allows the foot to maintain its most natural position to absorb impact, stabilize, and powerfully push off the ground. Getting the right design was accomplished by tracing healthy feet while wearing socks. His design is backed up by some pretty impressive statistics. According to Golden, “Populations who don’t wear shoes with tapered toe boxes and raised heel, over a billion people, have a rate of foot problems at 3%. In the U.S., where we almost exclusively wear tapered toes boxes and elevated heels, the incidence is 73%.” The next innovation was to add balance level cushioning, which Golden coined “Zero Drop” cushioning. This means the shoes are the same thickness in the sportsguidemag.com ]

Golden’s friend, and now business partner, Brian Beckstead, was a runner suffering from hamstring problems. Golden also made Brian a pair of shoes, and when he tried them his hamstring problems improved. These are just a few success stories from their first year when around a thousand pairs of modified shoes were sold. After this experience with the shoes, Brian wanted to be part of the company that Golden and Jeremy were in the process of starting. On the verge of their launch they’d already accumulated nearly a million dollars in debt so Icon Fitness, a home exercise equipment company based in Logan, stepped in with backing and the company launched in 2011. ACCOLADES AND FUTURE GROWTH Their unique shoe design won awards early on including “Best Debut” from Runner’s World Magazine at the 2015 Outdoor Retailer Winter Market. They continue to draw industry attention and were featured as a finalist in the ISPO Brandnew Category of Sportswear in 2015. ISPO Brandnew is a start-up competition in the sporting goods industry where awards are given to innovative products made by brands four years old or younger. Altra’s now the fastest growing shoe company in history with headquarters in Orem and Logan. Known best for their trail shoes, they’re the 4th largest selling brand of trail models and 10th overall for road shoes. This explosive growth is fueled by recommendations from doctors and podiatrists; some of their top-selling outlets are foot clinics.

Altra Lone Peak 2.5 Women

Their increasing popularity can also be attributed to their sponsorship of races like the Muscle Milk Light ZOOMA Women’s Race Series in 2014 and this summer’s Wasatch Trail Run Series Summer 5K and 10K races. Shoe demonstrations offered at events help runners find the perfect Altra for their feet.

FORGING NEW PATHS

The NOLS Experience By Alexa V. Morgan

Andy Blair, assistant director of NOLS Rocky Mountain, says that the majority of enrollees are in their late teens to early twenties and seeking high school or college credit, granted primarily through the University of Utah. Older students come from many different walks of life, whether to advance their career, start a new one, or take a sabbatical. NOLS courses award credit hours in various fields of study, including environmental science, biology, leadership techniques, and risk management. Students also have the opportunity to earn CPR, wilderness

first aid, Leave No Trace ethics, and other certifications.

Ben Corso chose the Southwest Outdoor Educator Course in hopes of furthering his career as an adventure guide and gaining team-building skills. He first heard about NOLS in 1989 and had long considered enrolling. After reaching a crossroads in his life about a year ago, he says he felt the time was finally right. His group of 10 students and two instructors spent a month backpacking in the mountains outside Tucson and climbing Arizona’s Cochise Stronghold, summiting Bassett Peak. Corso says the multi-pitch climbs—higher and more

“There are as many reasons to take a NOLS course as there are students,” says Blair. When Cole Medders signed up for the Spring Semester in the Rockies, he fulfilled a long-held desire to move out West and explore the wild. The course began in February with a winter camping excursion in Wyoming’s Absaroka Mountains. The group practiced backcountry skiing, avalanche rescue, and built igloos to take shelter from the elements, which Medders says was the highlight of his NOLS experience. “It felt like you were really surviving out there,” he says. “It got down to -20 or -30 degrees some nights and we were way out in the middle of nowhere in the mountains, just surviving this environment that people aren’t really supposed to be in. It’s very empowering.”

Every year, more than 3,000 students begin an epic adventure by enrolling in the National Outdoor Leadership School at one of their 14 locations across six continents. Headquartered in Lander, Wyoming and celebrating 50 years in 2015, NOLS is the largest nonprofit wilderness educator worldwide.

An environmental science and chemistry major at Baylor University, Medders now plans to pursue an outdoor education degree as well. After the conclusion of a six-month internship with NOLS in December, he will enroll in an instructor course.

physically demanding than anything he’d ever experienced—pushed him out of his comfort zone. For someone who once suffered from a fear of vertical heights, it was a time of transformation. “My whole perspective on what’s uncomfortable changed,” he says. “It was absolutely grueling and exhausting, but we really bonded. There was just a lot of teamwork involved.” Corso says he now has the confidence to take people multi-pitch climbing, and a three-month guiding excursion he participated in this summer wouldn’t have happened without his NOLS experience. “I got a lot of what I was looking for, and things that I couldn’t really even put into words—the sense that I’m capable of doing much more than I give myself credit for,” he says. “It’s a 30-day outdoor experience. How can you not be changed by that?” Wilderness knowledge isn’t a prerequisite to take part in NOLS, and

courses are open to everyone. However, students are encouraged to be as fit as possible. Along with internship opportunities, NOLS offers approximately $1.5 million in scholarship funds every year. Qualifying students could have up to a third of their tuition covered. “NOLS courses are physically and mentally demanding experiences, and they can be extremely positive and lifechanging if you are in the right space for them,” Blair says, adding that many of his former students use the leadership skills they learned in the backcountry every day, across various career fields. Upcoming courses for spring semester include programs in the Southwest,

India, and Australia, sailing in Baja, backpacking in the Rockies, and the longest NOLS offering: Year in Patagonia, a 135-day expedition through some of the most remote parts of the Andes with an emphasis on cultural immersion and Spanish language skills. The Wind River Wilderness Course—the original program created by legendary mountaineer and NOLS founder Paul Petzoldt in 1965— remains the most popular. “We take people to places that are what the world looked like for the last several million years,” Blair says. “I believe that a knowledge of wild places is valuable to us as a society, and as a species.” Learn more about enrollment, financial aid, internships, and career opportunities at nols.edu.

Recent research suggests that athletes may need up to two times the RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) of many B-vitamins, and they are frequently lacking in athletes’ diets. MICRONUTRIENTS, MEGA BENEFITS

Vitamins and Minerals for Peak Performance By Molly Newman Getting enough vitamins and minerals in your diet may seem like a straightforward affair. Eat a bowl of fortified cereal, have a big leafy salad, maybe pop a multivitamin pill if you’re feeling particularly dedicated. Though your body only needs them in trace amounts, these micronutrients can have a serious impact on your muscle strength, bone health, and overall energy levels. Recent research shows that athletes have specific vitamin and mineral needs—and that neglecting them can lead to slower race times, increased fatigue, and even heightened chance of injuries. These vitamins and minerals are proven to be the most critical for athletic performance, and are ones athletes need in extra doses. Experts advise getting your micronutrients from food sources, but when that’s not practical (or compatible with your diet or schedule), excellent supplements are available as well.

Calcium You know you need calcium to build strong bones, and that calcium is essential for weight-bearing exercise like running and hiking. One study showed that runners who drank a cup of lowfat milk each day had up to a 62% reduction in stress fracture risk! But this mineral also helps regulate your heartbeat, your nervous system signaling, and activates enzymes that perform hundreds of bodily functions. Not getting enough calcium may put you at risk of serious bone density problems, including osteoporosis. What You Need: 800 milligrams/day for adults; 100 milligrams/day for women 50+ Food Sources: Dairy foods, leafy greens, salmon, citrus fruits Folate, B12, and other B-Complex Vitamins This group of nine related vitamins is critical for both energy production during exercise and for replacing blood cells and repairing tissue damage after a

Magnesium Plagued with cramps during or after a long-distance run or ride? Low magnesium levels may be to blame. This mineral also plays key roles in metabolizing fat, protein, and carbohydrates for energy. Working up a sweat and drinking plenty of water also flush magnesium from the body, meaning athletes are at greater risk of magnesium deficiency than couch potatoes. What You Need: 420 milligrams/day for men; 320 milligrams/day for women Food Sources: Leafy greens, fish, beans, almonds Zinc This trace mineral affects basal metabolic rate, protein metabolism, and tissue repair—all critical issues for athletes. Since zinc is found almost exclusively in high-protein foods, high-carb training diets are low in this essential nutrient. One study suggested that up to 90% of athletes may not be getting enough zinc from food alone. Loss of appetite, fatigue, and osteoporosis are all associated with insufficient zinc. What You Need: 9.4 milligrams/day for men; 6.8 milligrams/day for women Food Sources: Oysters, beef, lamb, lentils, quinoa Vitamin C Not only does Vitamin C have energyproducing effects, but it repairs cellular damage from free radicals in the environment and can lessen the symptoms of a cold (even if it’s been proven not to prevent one). Strenuous, prolonged exercise has been shown to boost the need for this vitamin, and many experts recommend 100 or more milligrams a day for endurance athletes.

What You Need: RDI is 60 milligrams/day, but some sources recommend more Food Sources: Peppers, citrus fruits, Brussels sprouts, kiwi Iron Essential for red blood cells’ job of supplying muscles with oxygen, this mineral is readily depleted in athletes. One study showed that just one hour of weightlifting produced nearly a 6% drop in the body’s iron levels. Women athletes need to be extra-conscious of their iron intake, since blood loss during menstruation also causes iron levels to dip. Without sufficient iron, you may experience fatigue, cold hands and feet, or shortness of breath. What You Need: 6 milligrams/day for adult men; 8.1 milligrams/day for women ages 19–50 Food Sources: Beef, organ meats, eggs, soy foods, lentils Vitamin D If you workout outdoors and your skin is often exposed to sunshine, you’re unlikely to be deficient—but, sadly, wearing clothes, using sunscreen, or spending training time indoors all lessen your body’s production of this vital nutrient. Low levels impair calcium absorption, putting you at risk for low bone density and stress fractures, and may contribute to fatigue and depression. Many health professionals suggest that those living in a temperate zone (that’s you, Utahns!) have their Vitamin D levels checked and consider supplementing at least in the winter months. What You Need: 600 IU/day for adults Food Sources: Canned tuna or sardines, cod liver oil, egg yolks, cheese
