At Sports Backers, we are proud of the work we do to help build vibrant and active communities throughout Richmond. While our events provide memorable moments like the joy of the jumping dogs at Dominion Energy Riverrock, or the fun of a house party along the route of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, or the opportunity to cheer on a coworker who’s running the VCU Health Richmond Marathon, in many cases people only know about Sports Backers through our events and not our wider community initiatives. Yes, it’s true that we put on some of the biggest (and best) events in the country, and we take great pride in that. But, when I let people know about Sports Backers’ mission to inspire active living throughout RVA, they are often amazed at the breadth of our work and the positive impact it produces. This report shines a light on some of the ways we, with your help, build an active living culture in our community, including: • Helping neighbors gather at community centers, schools, and churches for free fitness classes not otherwise available in their neighborhoods • Encouraging and equipping residents to voice their support for safer ways to bike, walk, and run throughout our community • Enlisting thousands of volunteers to get out of their homes (often well before sunrise) to support those who are running, biking, and otherwise participating in any of our various events • Providing run clubs to local students so that they are able to build their self-confidence through physical activity Sports Backers is dedicated to providing opportunities for all of us to be a part of the active living community. Whatever your passion, I invite you to get up, get moving, and join us in inspiring active living in every corner of our region. Sincerely,
William T. Berry, Jr. Board Chair

FROM PUBLIC HOUSING TO UVA, CORVELL POAG HAS A SCHOLAR-ATHLETE STORY THAT INSPIRES Corvell Poag became the first Times-Dispatch/ Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete Award overall winner from a City of Richmond School since 1993. However, it was his amazing story of perseverance, profiled in a front-page story in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, that inspires like no other in the 28-year history of the program. Growing up in public housing with both parents incarcerated, Poag became a standout wrestler and class president at Armstrong High School, and is now enrolled at the University of Virginia.
WHO WANTS MORE BIKING AND WALKING TRAILS? WE DO! BIG news for biking and walking – VDOT launched the Ashland to Petersburg Trail Study in March to identify a route to connect seven Central Virginia cities/counties by a multi-use trail. Providing a north-south complement to the Virginia Capital Trail, the multi-use path would offer 41 miles of new biking/walking connection!
BIKE WALK RVA TOPS OFF YEAR WITH RICHMOND HISTORY MAKER AWARD If you’re sensing it was a great year for our Bike Walk RVA efforts, you’re right! In March, the team was honored as a Richmond History Maker by the Valentine for a new category: Improving Regional Transportation. The Richmond History Makers recognizes trailblazers by celebrating their lasting contributions to the greater Richmond region.
RVA MAKES THIS LIST! For the first time ever, Richmond made BICYCLING magazine's "Best Bike Cities in America" list, coming in at #34. We look forward to moving up the list as more protected bike lines are built!

UKROP’S MONUMENT AVENUE 10K TURNS 20, HONORED BY HOUSE OF DELEGATES To celebrate two decades of the Commonwealth’s largest participation event, House Resolution 350 recognized the 20th running of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k. The event was also named to Runner’s World magazine’s list of ‘70 American Road Races Every Runner Should Finish’.
FITNESS WARRIORS INSPIRE THE REGION The Fitness Warriors program continues to train area residents to be fitness leaders so that they can bring fitness to the areas that need free exercise options the most. And, boy oh boy, was 2019 our year! Warriors classes welcomed 1,536 new participants and had over 14,700 class visits!
WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT OUR VOLUNTEERS! It takes almost 7,000 volunteers per year to make our events and programs happen, and we value each and every one! Huge shout out to our volunteer of the year winners: Edward Knight, Anita Waters, Mary Kate Steed, Carole Halstead, and Jennifer Perrin. #LetsGoRVA
COACH RO AND HALF MARATHON TRAINING TEAM MARK ONE DECADE One more mile, don’t forget to smile! That’s the popular refrain from Sports Backers Half Marathon Training Team coach Ro Gammon, whose program celebrated its 10th year, all with Ro at the helm. Over the last decade, over 11,000 people have used the program to train for their half marathons.
DOMINION ENERGY RIVERROCK HONORED The nation’s premier outdoor sports and music festival was recognized as RVA’s Tourism Event of the Year by Richmond Region Tourism.

We truly value our history and relationship with Sports Backers and know that we have a respected and trusted nonprofit partnership with them. Not only do they constantly challenge us to increase our advocacy involvement and expand our programs to reach more kids, but they also offer support to enhance our work through volunteer leadership, financial support, and community engagement. Their support and partnership allows us to more effectively fulfill our mission!” – Mary Dunne Stewart, CEO of Greater Richmond Fit4Kids
The Active RVA awards program produced by Sports Backers shined a spotlight on Williams Mullen’s efforts to inspire active living at our firm. The piece of acrylic was nice, but the true reward is helping us reflect on creating a culture of health that truly made a difference in our co-workers’ lives.” – Calvin W. “Woody” Fowler, Jr., President and CEO of Williams Mullen
$65,731 Awarded in grants to help nonprofit organizations expand their active living programs and services.
$70,000 Awarded to 22 high school senior scholarathletes that serve as role models living active and healthy lifestyles

BIKE & PEDESTRIAN ADVOCACY
WE GROW ADVOCACY FOR BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN INFRASTRUCTURE.
A million and one people turned out to speak in favor of the Brook Road bike lanes. It’s incredible that Bike Walk RVA managed to get dozens and dozens of folks organized and educated to give thoughtful and respectful public comment during an hours-long meeting on a Monday night. They are the local advocacy game in town.”
– Jason James, Bike Walk Academy Graduate
People participated in at least one of 50 Bike Month events held throughout the region during the month of May.
900+
– Ross Catrow, Good Morning RVA
I think the Ashland to Petersburg trail will make an incredible difference in the region for active recreation and transportation. Fortythree miles of paths separated from traffic will help more people feel comfortable walking and biking in many underserved areas in the region. As an early graduate of Bike Walk RVA’s Academy, it’s amazing to see how far we have pushed the dial on regional support for safe biking and walking connections.”
5,000+ Yard signs have been distributed around the Richmond region, as part of our Vision Zero marketing program, in an effort to increase visibility of support for safe streets.
Check out more Bike Walk RVA Highlights on page 6!
In January, hundreds of community advocates won the fight against two city councilors’ ordinance to ban the City of Richmond’s fully funded and designed Brook Road bike lane.

EVENTS
WE CREATE DIVERSE EVENT OPPORTUNITIES.
AWESOME!!! A party from beginning to end. Party on both sides of the street AND the median, What?!!!!. Encouragement and treats from race organizers as well as residents that lived along the course, even little ones extended a hand for a high five. Plenty of water/Powerade stations...My first time, but definitely not my last.” – Angela Camacho, 2019 Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k Participant
My boys just learned how to ride [their bikes] and we set the Moonlight Ride as a goal/challenge. Fun times by all! They completed the 8 mile course and had a great experience!"

Richmond puts on a great half and full marathon! I ran the half last year and the full this year. Both courses have great crowd support, volunteers, aid stations, pretty fall scenery, and great neighborhoods to run through. – Tyler Pake, 2018 Richmond Marathon Participant
Team spirit was at an all-time high in June when nearly 6,000 people from businesses and organizations across the region walked, jogged, or ran in the Anthem Corporate Run.

GROUP FITNESS
WE PROVIDE GROUP FITNESS PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY. See how we're expanding fitness opportunities throughout the region on page 4!
A huge thanks to LaCora Hurte [Fitness Warrior] for always pushing us to do better! I'm so thankful for this class that has become my normal Wednesday workout routine. Since joining the class, I’ve lost 17 pounds, have changed my eating habits, and am feeling better. If you haven’t been to Reboot yet, you’re missing out!" -B randy Mathews, Fitness Warriors Class Participant (Reboot with LaCora in Amelia County)
Kids Run RVA helps students learn about running that otherwise might not be able to experience it in a safe environment. Kids Run RVA also covers the cost of shoes and race entries, removing financial barriers that would result in the inability of a child to participate in the program. I enjoy helping students reach a goal of completing a race because it gives them a great sense of self-esteem and lets them realize that with dedication and hard work they can succeed! – Anita Waters, Kids Run RVA Coach at Henderson Middle School
4,823 People participated on a Sports Backers Training Team and trained for either a marathon, half marathon, 10k, or 8k. Nearly 350 training team members received income-based entry fees.
1,860 Youth received subsidized race entries for either the Marathon Jr. or Virginia529 Kids Run.
53 Fitness Warriors Classes are hosted weekly throughout the Richmond Region.
