in the hot seat as Bafana coach. Mashaba showed bravery when he first did away with most of the regular players before he could replace them with young blood who did not disappoint and went on to qualify for Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in recent years. Big up Mashaba, and we look forward to you and the team as they participate in the competition next month in Equatorial Guinea. We also take this moment to congratulate Portia “Bashin” Modise for making a strong comeback to football, securing herself her 100th goal after more than 100 games. As if that was not enough, the Soweto lads went on to win the SA Star Sports Award of the Year
that saw her too home a brand new BMW plus an incentive of a cool R1m which saw her took R500 000 for herself while the other half went to the charity organization of her choice. Still on football, we say big up to Kaizer Chiefs who are on top of their football at the current moment. The mighty Amakhosi are still to be beaten in 16 matches. We a l s o c o n g r a t u l a t e t h e Springboks for topping the HSBC Sevens World Series points table after their recent 26-17 victory over New Zealand in a pulsating final of the Cell C Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens. This victory has put them in a good chance to complete.

IT is that time of the year when most of us take some long trips to our roots to spend some quality time with our families. 2014 was a great year, although we the sports fraternity suffered a lot of pain after the untimely passing away of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain, Senzo Meyiwa and former 800m international athlete, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi. These youngsters were great athletes this country has ever produced and may their Souls Rest in Peace. On the other hand we rejoice with Ephraim “Shakes” Mashabe who completely took Bafana Bafana to the new great heights shortly after his appointment as the replacement for Gordon Igesund

PROTEIN POWER FOR CORNELIA JOUBERT SA Marathon Champion Cornelia Joubert (Nedbank Running Club) defended her title to take gold in the Women's 21,1km at the SA Pork Kwai Challenge in May. She has described her success as a result of eating a lot of pork meat which gives her much needed proteins.
protein: Ÿ2 to 3 ounces of cooked lean meat, poultry, or fish (a portion about the size of a deck of playing cards) Ÿ1/2 cup of cooked dried beans Ÿ1 egg, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, or 1 ounce of cheese
Joubert (25) shaved a second off her 2013 winning time, finishing in 1:19:31. “It was a great race and it helped being familiar with the route” she said. She was followed minutes later by Ethiopian athletes Alem Tsehay Kakisa and Adanach Temilu, both from Nedbank.
Children and teens may need different amounts, depending on their age. Some healthy sources of meat protein include: ŸTurkey or chicken with the skin removed, or bison (also called buffalo meat) ŸLean cuts of beef or pork, such as round, top sirloin, or tenderloin (trim away any visible fat) ŸFish or shellfish
Protein in diet Proteins are the building blocks of life. Every cell in the human body contains protein. The basic structure of protein is a chain of amino acids. You need protein in your diet to help your body repair cells and make new ones. Protein is also important for growth and development in children, teens, and pregnant women. Food Sources Protein foods are broken down into parts called amino acids during digestion. The human body needs a number of amino acids in large enough amounts to maintain good health. Amino acids are found in animal sources such as meats, milk, fish, and eggs. They are also found in plant sources such as soy, beans, legumes, nut butters, and some grains (such as wheat germ and quinoa). You do not need to eat animal products to get all the protein you need in your diet. Amino acids are classified into three groups: ŸEssential ŸNonessential ŸConditional
Other good sources of protein include: ŸPinto beans, black beans, kidney beans, lentils, split peas, or garbanzo beans ŸNuts and seeds, including almonds, hazelnuts, mixed nuts, peanuts, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, or walnuts (just watch how much you eat, because nuts are high in fat) ŸTofu, tempeh, and other soy protein products ŸLow-fat dairy products

The amount of recommended daily protein depends upon your age and health. Two to three servings of protein-rich foods will meet the daily needs of most adults. Fun to be on the road has been given a new meaning by the all new Opel Corsa. The favourite getaround car returns with more fun specs to make drive even more pleasurable. Several modifications to all of the most important chassis components have resulted in a noticeably better driving comfort of the Opel Corsa whilst its agile driving characteristics are not compromised respectively further improved. The overall length of the new Corsa is identical to the outgoing model as Opel believes owners were most pleased with the model's compact exterior but generously spaced interior. The design theme is based off the Opel Adam, but with larger proportions to fill. Opel wanted to provide greater definition between the 'sporty' look of the three-door and the 'premium' look of five-door models. All-New Chassis

MEYIWA COULD MAKE HISTORY AT CAF AWARDS The winners, including that of African Player of the Year (based outside the continent), will be decided by votes from the Head Coaches/Technical Directors of National Associations affiliated to CAF. The announcement will be made at a Gala Dinner on Thursday, 8 January 2015 in Lagos, Nigeria. Last year Egyptian Mohamed Aboutreika took the title for African Player of the Year (based in Africa), while Cote d'Ivoire captain and Manchester City's Yaya Toure was crowned African Player of the Year (based abroad) for the past three years. Toure has again made the top five for the 2014 award and will be competing against:
Late Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwa is the only South African in line for an award from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for 2014. Meyiwa could become the first player on the continent to get the accolade posthumously. The goalkeeper was among 20 players nominated in the 2014 CAF African Player of the Year (based in Africa) alongside fellow South Africans Bernard Parker of Kaizer Chiefs and Bongani Ndulula of AmaZulu. But the late Bafana Bafana captain is now the only South African left and is among the top five after the list was trimmed down by CAF.
He will be competing against the following players: 1. Akram Djahnit (Algeria, E.S. Setif) 2. El Hedi Belamieri (Algeria, E.S. Setif) 3. Fakhreddine Ben Youssef (Tunisia, C.S. Sfaxien) 4. Firmin Mubele Ndombe (D.R Congo, AS Vita) 5. Senzo Robert Meyiwa ( S o u t h A f r i ca , O r l a n d o Pirates) “It is a great honour for any player to be nominated for any award, but for Senzo to be the last South African standing even after he has passed on is an even greater honour. “As the Football Association we are quite pleased that after such a great year where we
had good returns on the field with all our teams qualifying for major continental competitions, we might start the New Year on a high should Senzo win the award,” said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan. “What is even more exciting is that Senzo could rewrite the history books from the grave by becoming the first player ever to win a CAF award posthumously. We can't ask for a better start to a new year than that and I hope when the announcement is made, his name will be the one called out to lift the trophy. Should he win, I am confident it will spur Bafana Bafana on at the AFCON tournament in Equatorial Guinea.”
