Aug 2015 IT is back to business and players are dusting off their football boots as they prepare for the 2015/16 season, and it goes without a saying that the country's crazy football fans' lonely days are over and they will soon be spoilt for choice. The season kicks off this on August 1 with the country's mother of all the derbies when Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates take each other in the annual Carlin Black Label Cup. The match takes place at the usual FNB Stadium where the Stadium Management has

also promise that this match will be accompanied by lots and lots of activities ranging from music and freebies. Still on football, we congratulate one of the country's oldest club, Umthatha Bucks from Eastern Cape for their return in the limelight after their promotion to the National First Division (NFD). Accompanying the NFD is Mpumalanga side's Mbombela United. The two sides will replace GARankuwa United and African Warriors who were since been

relegated to the Kay Motsepe League. Moving to rugby, we would like to wish our national team, The Springbok all the best as they prepare for the 2015 World Cup in England. The competition start on September 13 and we hope that our Die Bokke will remain in that country until the last day, October 31 during the nal match. South Africa kicks off their campaign against Samoa in Pool B on September 26 at the Villa Park.

OCTOBER will be one of the most remarkable months for Tshegofatso Nkge who will be travelling to Morocco with his other Bree Primary School teammates who are expected to represent South Africa at the under-12 Danone Nations Cup World Finals. Bree's Principal, Dave Kalicharan, this youngster will play a key role in the team leading up to and during the tournament. "He is a great motivator and is always joking around and making his team mates laugh," said Kalicharan. "This is over and above the fact that he is a skilled centre back who one day wants to emulate his hero, Neil Tovey." Tshegofatso started playing

soccer in the streets when he was 5 years old and was spotted by the coach of Naledi Academy, Bizza. "He saw my potential and mentored me and in 2013 he took me and 5 other players to attend trials at Bree Primary School. Three of us were successful, and I joined Bree in January 2014." The youngster has settled into the school well and has made many new friends and credits the success of the team to the dedication of the principal. "It's been great being a part of the school and I have adjusted very well. Kalicharan loves soccer and makes sure that we participate in different tournaments. He is very dedicated." Playing in the Danone Nations

Cup national nals is seen by Tshegofatso as one of the highlights of his life to date. "On that day we were lled with so many emotions; happy, excited, scared and intimidated. The nal was against Nelson Mandela and from the start of the game I knew that we were going to win. They were a very strong team, but we were stronger and hungrier than they were. Winning the nationals made me realise how much I love soccer and how important it is to work hard." The world nals are a different ball game, Tshegofatso knows. "We will be laying against the best schools from different countries. There is a lot of pressure on us as everyone wants us to reach the same heights at the 2009 team that won the World Finals. Our biggest advantage is the fact that our coach was at the world nals and has seen how different countries play soccer." Tshegofatso is looking forward to exploring Morocco. "I have never heard of the country before. I want to have fun and enjoy myself the entire time that I am there." On his return from Morocco the youngster is hoping to be signed by an academy that will take him a step closer to playing soccer professionally one day. "Soccer is my passion and I denitely want to make a career out of it and I know that there are plenty of scouts out there that come and see our games."

SPAR PROTEAS IMPRESS AGAINST SILVER FERNS The SPAR Netball Proteas may have lost against the New Zealand Silver Ferns on Sunday but they certainly impressed the Netball world with their performance. The world number two ranked Silver Ferns survived a second-quarter stutter to account for South Africa 68-44

burden, sinking all nine of her attempts on goal as her midcourt worked overtime to break New Zealand's tight defensive zone. The Silver Ferns converted 16 of 21 attempts to give the Ferns a 16-9 lead at the rst break. But the wheels fell off in the

in the rst of two Tests played at Claudelands Arena in Hamilton. Not since 1999 had South Africa scored so high against New Zealand. Sixteen years ago in a test played in Auckland, New Zealand beat South Africa 65-47 in the lead u p t o t h e W o r l d Championships played that year in Christchurch. New Zealand started with the same intensity that featured in their 60-goal win over Fiji three days ago. The Silver Ferns blasted out to an early 8-1 lead, helped by two early turnovers but couldn't maintain the pressure and allowed the world No.6 Proteas to graft their way back. Goal shoot Lenize Potgieter shouldered the attacking

s e c o n d q u a r t e r. N e w Zealand's midcourt struggled to create space, and their ow into the attacking third lacked rhythm and timing. The home team failed to nd the circle edge, and their feed into Goal Shooter Bailey Mes and Goal Attack Jodi Brown grew fractured and erratic. South Africa's circle defenders Adele Niemand and Karla Mostert forced a series of turnovers and suddenly the Proteas had closed New Zealand's lead to just one midway through the quarter. A four-goal run right before halftime restored some respectability to the margin, but although New Zealand took a 31-24 lead into the break, honours had been shared 15-15 in the second

quarter. Silver Ferns coach W a i m a r a m a Ta u m a u n u brought about new combinations at the half time break reintroducing Laura Langman to centre to open the attack which took a little time to settle. But by the end of the third quarter New Zealand had re-established midcourt dominance, winning the quarter 21-10 and building up a 52-34 lead. The Kiwis delivered more of the same in the nal 15 minutes and Langman was back to her very best in controlling the midcourt with precision as New Zealand won the spell 16-10 and the match by a comfortable 24 goals. Taumaunu gave credit to the Proteas on their performance. “South Africa worked really hard tonight to keep the ball away from us. They shot well and quite honestly with us not playing their style of netball for a while we were rattled. Also we didn't know the players in their defensive circle which took some getting used to.” A delighted SPAR Proteas

coach, Norma Plummer said she was proud of her team's performance considering. “In the rst quarter the girls were so nervous, they were watching the game and not really involved. It was a big moment for them. But in the second quarter they settled and put in an excellent effort. All in all I am really pleased with my girls.” Plummer singled out the teams “youngster” Izette Lubbe as one of the top performers saying her strength in particular was good. Plummer also gave credit to player of the match, Lenize Potgieter for her accuracy. “Lenize is such a great talent. At only 21 years of age, she adds such value to the team.” “The goal defense (Karla Mostert) also did a good job and started to read the game well” added Plummer. It's only been weeks since Australian multiple World Championship winner has taken over the reigns as coach of the SPAR Proteas. “Although I am pretty pleased with the progress since working with the girls I must say there is a lot of work still to do. It's been a terric challenge and the Proteas are a wonderful group of girls. The Proteas need to play at the top level to understand and experience the intensity. The game tonight was really not about the score line it was for the Proteas to gain form the experience of the Silver Ferns which will help them in their Wo r l d C u p c h a l l e n g e i n Sydney next month.” Plummer said that by the time the team arrived in Sydney she aimed to have the team performing 10 to 15% better. The second Test is scheduled for Tuesday in Auckland.

CARLING BLACK LABEL CUP

By SEKABA MAAKE THE countdown to the 5th edition of the Carling Black Label Cup has started and fans are urged to come as early as possible to avoid the last minute rush. The match on August 1 involving Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on August 1 at the FNB Stadium is expected to draw at least more than 94 000 fans which Jacques Grobbelaar, the Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA) chief executive ofcer has described as a record-breaking since the competition started ve years ago. “The 2015/16 soccer season is here and we are looking forward to the Soweto derby, the biggest match in the country and providing the best entertainment ever when we host the Carling Black

Label Cup,” said Grobbelaar. Since the tournament started back in 2011, Pirates has been crowned three times with Chiefs only winning once, in 2013 and they will be looking forward to lift this year's competition. Grobbelaar said fans who make their way to the stadium as early as 1.30 will receive some exciting giveaways such as Shoprite-Checkers vouchers worth R1 500. Apart from these vouchers, fans who can make it even more early will also enjoy the match between Chiefs and Pirates supporters at 10.30am. Other festivities include music acts in which DJ Tira (Afrotainment) and DJ Oskido (Kalawa Jazmee) will be on the decks.

Aug 2015

IS FINALLY HERE

There will be road closures around the FNB Stadium precinct with transportation to the venue provided by Top 6 Taxis, Rea Vaya, Metrorail and KTK Shuttles. Parking tickets (R30) can be pre-purchased from computicket to avoid trafc delays on match day. Ensuring that all ticket holders are safe and sound is a big focus at FNB Stadium. No liquor can be brought to the

venue and supporters are also prohibited from carrying any dangerous items. SMSA and “SAB pride themselves in months of planning in order to put in place all the right security measures so that our guests feel at home. We also want to emphasise that all tickets are sold out and that there will be no tickets sold at the venue”, afrmed Grobbelaar.

POLICE FLASHES RED CARD TO CAR GUARDS DURING THE SOWETO DERBY MOTOR guards will be the biggest losers during this year's Carling Black Label Cup after the Gauteng Provincial Police took the decided to block them from doing business at the FNB Stadium when Kaizer Chiefs take on Orlando Pirates. In a joint-statement with Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and Gauteng Provincial Police, Wayne Minaar pointed out that

they have appointed more than 200 police and metro police who will make sure that there is a free trafc ow of which they won't be allowing any car guards anywhere near the stadium. “We are going to arrest any illegal car guard because we can't allow our people to be harassed during the time of the match here. We are aware that most of the cars are being broken into and mostly by the same car guards who

pretend to be looking after your car.” said Minaar. Should they be successful with their campaign, the it means the car guards will lose a lot as they always charge around R50 per car, something which has in the past made their richer whenever games of this magnitude are played at the FNB Stadium. On the other hand Minaar conrmed that unlike in the past, this year motorist will enjoy the

benet of a free-ow trafc after the decision not to close roads leading to the Stadium. “This year we are going to allow motorists to park their cars in all the marked parking areas around the Stadium such as the Shareworld, Nasrec and the one opposite Nasrec. The only road that will be closed will be Orlando Highway to allow Rea Vaya Busses to ow freely,” said Minaar

BAKWENA N1/N4 TOLLS CELEBRATES 15

IN 2000, October 4 Bakwena signed a Concession Contract with the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) to construct, manage, maintain and upgrade the N1 and N4 roads and has to date successfully met and exceeded expectations to ensure these routes operate to world-class standards. Bakwena is responsible for maintaining a 95 kilometre stretch of road from the north of Ts h w a n e t o B e l a B e l a (Warmbaths), as well as a 290 kilometre section of the N4 from t h e Ts h w a n e t h r o u g h Rustenburg and Zeerust to the Botswana border at Skilpdahek. Bakwena was the rst company in South Africa to offer a system of Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) and successfully implemented ETC using e-tags with the same basic technology as the Open Road Tolling system (ORT) that is being deployed on the Gauteng freeways. Bakwena currently operates two

trafc control centres on behalf of SANRAL, the Mantsole Trafc Control Centre (MTCC) and Bapong Trafc Control Centre (BTTC), to ensure that vehicles using the roads are not overloaded and are roadworthy. The MTCC is the agship of trafc control centres in South Africa and controls truck loading on the N1 and R101 to reduce wear and tear on the road and the potential for accidents due to overloading. Based on Bakwena's success in managing the MTCC, SANRAL subsequently contracted Bakwena to carry out the same function at the BTCC on the N4. Owing to an increase in trafc volumes, Bakwena has built dual carriageways in various areas along the route to achieve a better ow of trafc that reduces travelling time. Bakwena sponsored the research and publication of 'The Platinum Road Book' written by Peter Delmar to add value to the driving experiences of

customers who use the Bakwena roads, to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and to increase the appreciation of very important elements of South Africa's heritage in this area. Since its launch in 2013, and in response to the positive feedback received, Bakwena extended a further sponsorship for 'The Platinum Road Book' to be developed into a mobile app. The app works using the GPS location of the device that the traveller is using. Based on the location of the traveller, the app will automatically start telling the anecdotal stories of certain points along the N1 and N4 as the traveller approaches them. Bakwena constantly monitors trafc, analyses trends, proactively takes corrective action, assesses whether infrastructure needs to be enhanced to increase safety and provides a 24/7 route-assistance and customer-care service – all to create a safer driving experience. In addition, when

certain trafc thresholds are reached, additional lanes and intersection improvements are implemented to ensure that trafc ow is maintained at satisfactory levels. The upgrading of the N1 between the Proefplaas and Zambezi interchanges was completed successfully in May 2013. This contract provided four lanes in both directions which ties in with the GFIP lane conguration. The construction cost was R240million (Excl VAT). The upgrading of the N1 between the Zambezi interchange and Pumulani Plaza commenced in August 2013 and included the provision of a third lane from the Zambezi interchange up to the Pumulani Plaza and the widening of the Zambezi Bridge to accommodate the three lanes in both directions. The work was successfully completed by December 2014 at a cost of R130 million.

YEARS OF SUCCESS ON ROAD SAFETY

The contract for the rehabilitation of national route, N1 Section 23, between Pienaarsrivier and Bela-Bela, (km 13.4 to km 42.6) commenced on 7 January 2014 and currently being completed. The tender period for this contract is 18 months. The contract makes provision for 310mm deep milling of the slow lane and construction of a 200mm stabilised sub-base in identied areas. This is followed by a 110mm bitumen treated base and 40mm asphalt overlay with rolled-in chips. On the remaining sections where no sub-base is required, 110 mm deep milling of the existing slow lane will be done and replaced with 110 mm bitumen-treated base followed by a 40 mm asphalt overlay with rolled-in chips. A geotextile (GlassGrid) will be placed in the bitumentreated base. This project is one of the largest projects in the world that is using GlassGrid as

part of a rehabilitation project. A subsurface drain will also be installed in both directions over the full extent of the contract to assist with managing the high water table in this area. In line with the Concession Contract's geometric standards, the grade of the super-elevation will also be improved during this contract with 2% increased to 3% - where applicable. The contract was completed the end of March 2015 well within the construction period and budget. The cost of this project was R275 million. The upgraded works are being extended in 2015 to include the upgrading of Sefako Makghato Drive Interchange to improve capacity constraints at the interchange terminals. Bakwena has completed the second section of the additional carriageway on the N4 between the Brits West Interchange (R512) and Buffelspoort Interchange. The contract entailed building a second

carriageway with bridges, as well as lengthening of existing bridges, culverts and interchange improvements to cater for the new carriageway. The total cost of this contract was ± R380 million and the dual carriageway was opened in midNovember 2014. The second phase of the rehabilitation of the N4 between Swartruggens and Rustenburg commenced in July 2013 and was successfully completed by December 2014. The total project cost was approximately R200 million. The entire road from the town of Zeerust through to Groot Marico will be rehabilitated in 20152017.The entire road section will be rehabilitated. This project started in April 2015 at a cost of approximately R250 million for the current phase. At Bakwena road safety is our priority. Bakwena's accident statistics for the rst quarter of 2015 are very encouraging as no

fatalities were recorded on N1 in January through to April. In 2014 on the N4 we had 18 fatalities between January to March and 6 on the N1, in 2015 there were 3 fatalities on the N4 and none on the N1 during the same period. There were no fatalities over the 2015 Easter period. The Tshwane Metro and other trafc authorities have worked closely with Bakwena and PtOps route patrollers and are visible on the N1N4. Accesses to the highway have been closed off, pedestrian fence erected on N1 north of Zambezi plaza which has resulted in positive road safety results for the rst quarter of 2015. Accurate and timeous reporting of incidents and accidents are improving with the implementation of the new national RIMS (Road Incident Management System) framework from government administered by SANRAL.

THE YOUTHFUL MARKET GET BLESSED BY SPLASH

The busy compact car market in South Africa continues to welcome new models from virtually all carmakers trading in this country. Suzuki Auto South Africa has for their part added a new model to the local market, in the form of the Suzuki Splash. The youthful market as the targeted group will be further enticed by the new Suzuki Splash, which offers offers generous space due to its tall rooine and long wheelbase, notwithstanding its compact category. The Splash is aimed at the medium entry-level, between the Suzuki Alto and the Suzuki Swift hatchback.
