Nov 2015 IT is almost December time, the months of giving and receiving and the months where most of us take the long trips back home to spend time with our loved ones. Before that and everything let's rst congratulate our Rugby nation team, the Springbok for nishing third during the recent Rugby World Cup which was held in England. The Bronze in this competitive world cup is a big achievement on its own. Coming to football matters, we are excited as we wait in - nakampe@sports-focus.co.za 071 562 1847

anticipation the big nal m a t c h v i a t h e Te l k o m Knockout involving Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns at the venue still to be conrmed. It is history that both teams overcame their traditional arch-rivals to be in this nal with Chiefs having beaten Orlando Pirates with Sundowns having knocked out SuperSport United during the semi-nal matches. Meanwhile the current situation on our domestic league proves that clubs

have raised bars in the as far as competition is concern. That the likes of BidVest Wits, Mpumalanga Black Aces and Platinum Stars are currently in the top ve brackets on the league log speaks volume…more so given the fact that the clubs have played at least 10 matches by far. It remains however to be seen if those clubs mentioned above will maintain their same form through to the last matches of the league.

The Brazilians take on Kaizer Chiefs in the nal match of the competition on December 16 at the venue still to be decided. This after they beat t h e i r Ts h w a n e r i v a l s , SuperSport United 3-1 in the semi-nal match of the competition which was played on Saturday night at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville. Chiefs on the other side had to rely on a 6-5 penalty victory over traditional arch-rivals, Orlando Pirates after this Soweto derby affair ended in a goalless draw after the regulated 90 minutes plus extra-time at the FNB Stadium in front of close to 70 000 spectators. Amkhosi's victory was a sweet revenge after the Naturena based-side suffered

a 3-1 defeat in a league match at the same venue a week ago. Back to Sundowns, the Pitso Mosimane's coached side has b e e n e l u d e d b y Te l k o m Knockout Cup title for a decade and half as the last time they won the competition was in 1999 when the competition was still known the Rothmans Cup and they will be looking forward to rectify that. AVING travelled the length and breadth of the African continent, through insurmountable odds, Orlando Pirates has proudly carried the South African ag all the way to the nal of the CAF Confederation Cup. The Mighty Buccaneers took on the likes of Zamalek SC, AC Leopards and CS Sfaxien, while also slaying Cairo giants Al Ahly along the way. These all being sides that the Club has faced in previous CAF competitions. Orlando Pirates will now be faced with the task of taking on a lesser known but just as formidable opponent in Tunisian side, Etoile Du Sahel. Their pedigree beyond reaching this year’s nal is not to be understated, as they too, have a CAF Champions

League victory under their belt. A feat achieved in the 2007 edition, vanquishing no less of an opponent than Al Ahly, with a resounding 3-1 aggregate over two legs. Orlando Pirates Head Coach Eric Tinkler is all too aware of the fact that while the pageantry of a nal exists,

there is a bigger story at play, given that this is the one CAF trophy missing from the Buccaneers mantle, to complete the continental trinity (1995 CAF Champions’ League and 1996 Super Cup trophy). “This is a massive opportunity for the Club and everyone involved to win a major trophy such as the CAF Confederation Cup. Orlando Pirates is a big Club with a rich history and it is an honour to be p a r t o f t h a t h i s t o r y. Naturally we would like nothing better than to positively contribute to the legacy of the Club.” “Etoile du Sahel has earned itself a place in the nal by beating the best; w e c a n n o t a ff o r d t o

HE Phalula sisters, Lebogang and DianaLebo, took top honours in the 2015 SPAR Grand Prix, with Lebogang the runaway winner of the award, and her twin the runner-up. Lebogang has had a spectacular year on the road, notching up victory after victory. She was the star performer in the SPAR Women's 10km Challenge Series, winning in Durban and Johannesburg, and nishing in the top three in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria. She

accumulated an impressive total of 95 points to make sure that she walked away with the prize of R150 000. Her twin, who won the title in 2014, nished in second position, with 75 points, for prize money of R50 000. Diana-Lebo won the Grand Prix in 2014, and her sister made it clear then that she intended to win the title this year. Another previous Grand Prix winner, Mapaseka Makhanya, and Nolene Conrad nished joint third, with 67 points each, and they

will take home R27 500 each. They were closely followed by Cornelia Joubert, with 65 points. Three times Grand Prix winner Rene Kalmer was sixth, with 58 points, and her sister, Christine, was seventh, with 53. Lebogang was overjoyed at winning the prestigious Grand Prix title. "I have had to work hard to get back to the top after being suspended for using a banned substance," she said. "I wanted to prove that I could do it, and that I wasn't a cheat. Winning the Grand Prix means so much to me. My

sister won it last year and I decided this year was going to be my year." Diana-Lebo, who missed the Cape Town race because she was doing national duty at the world cross-country championships in China, said she and her sister would share their winnings. "We have shared the car that I won last year, and we will also share our prize money. We are each other's biggest fans, and we share everything. I am very happy for Lebogang, but I've told her to watch out it's my turn next year."

CAPTURES 2015 SPAR GRAND PRIX

2015 SPAR Grand Prix winner Lebogang Phalula poses next to the year end SPAR Grand Prix Standings during the SPAR GRAND PRIX AWARDS The twins said they would focus on trying to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year. Lebogang will be aiming for the 1500 and 5000m events, while Diana-Lebo is still trying to decide whether she wants to stay on the track or aim for the marathon. Another former Grand Prix winner, Irvette van Zyl, showed she is still a force to be reckoned with, after she ď€ nished ninth, with 39 points. Van Zyl ran three races while pregnant, and she came 11th in the Johannesburg race, only ď€ ve weeks after giving birth to her son Louis.

"Next year I will be back with a vengeance," she said. "I want to start winning SPAR races again, and I am also going to try to qualify for the 10 000m at the Olympic Games." SPAR Marketing Executive Mike Prentice said the Grand Prix awards had become one of the supermarket giant's most important sponsorships. "The Grand Prix will be 10 years old next year, and it has gone from strength to strength. "We are thrilled at the way the runners have responded to the series,

and we are delighted that so many of the top runners and clubs try to compete in as many of the SPAR races as possible. Our Challenge races are all about the thousands of women who take to the streets every year, but the elite runners give the races credibility as major events on the roadrunning calendar," said Prentice. Protein in diet Proteins are the building blocks of life. Every cell in the human body contains protein. The basic structure of protein is a chain of amino acids. You need protein in your diet to help your body repair cells and make new ones. Protein is also important for growth and development in children, teens, and pregnant women. Food Sources Protein foods are broken down into parts called amino acids during digestion. The human body needs a number of amino acids in large enough amounts to maintain good health. Amino acids are found in animal sources such as meats, milk, fish, and eggs. They are also found in plant sources such as soy, beans, legumes, nut butters, and some grains

(such as wheat germ and quinoa). You do not need to eat animal products to get all the protein you need in your diet. Amino acids are classified into three groups: ŸEssential ŸNonessential ŸConditional Essential amino acids cannot be made by the body, and must be supplied by food. They do not need to be eaten at one meal. The balance over the whole day is more important. Nonessential amino acids are made by the body from essential amino acids or in the

After 48 matches played, there have been 103 goals scored in the NFD, at an average of 2.15 goals per match, or a goal every 42 minutes. The most goals scored in a single xture was on the opening weekend when Mbombela United and Thanda Royal Zulu shared the spoils in six goal thriller at the Kanyamazane Stadium. On the ip side, bottom-of-thetable Mthatha Bucks have netted just three goals this season, while African Warriors (14th) and Moroka Swallows (12th) have only found the back of the net on four occasions. Cape Town All Stars have also kept four clean sheets, and conceded only three goals so far.

Three former Absa Premiership clubs – Thanda Royal Zulu, Santos and Moroka Swallows, will all be concerned over the amount of goals conceded, the trio each having shipped in 11 goals to date at nearly two per game. The bottom two clubs – Mthatha Bucks and Santos, are yet to win this season, while the top three sides – Baroka FC, Witbank Spurs and Cape Town All Stars, have won four of their six games. HERE YOU GO, WITH

Following the successful introduction of its original model, the new generation Toyota Aygo made its rst South African public appearance before a crowd of 18 000 at the Red Bull XFighters event held at the Union Buildings in Tshwane on 12 September. It was indeed a powerful statement by Toyota SA, to say "we have nothing to be ashamed of" with this model, which is still nding its way into the hearts of Toyotafriendly market. The Aygo competes in a largely competitive market of small city sleekers. But with its more than adequate features, including stylish design and great fuel efciency, the new Aygo delivers on this front offering customers the total package. “The new Aygo combines a distinctive, sporty and unashamedly funky design

with a comprehensive specication level, great fuel efciency and proven Toyota QDR, which will undoubtedly appeal to the young and young at heart”, says Glenn Crompton, vice-president for marketing at Toyota South Africa. An X-Terior with Attitude From the onset, the new Aygo announces its presence with bold, dramatic styling infused with a cheeky attitude. Taking centre stage is a prominent “X”-motif in the front grille which extends upwards to the A-pillar and side mirrors to create a unique identity and strong road presence, reafrming that the new Aygo is no shrinking violet. The result is a decidedly cheeky, ve-door hatch which exudes a sporty, youthful and energetic image and is perfectly suited to tackle the cityscape.

The lower half of the “X” frames the central air-dam which extends to the edges of the front bumper. Sporty air intake slats compliment the “X”, adding a unique x-factor to the front view. Angular headlights featuring projector halogen technology provide excellent illumination of the road ahead and seamlessly blend into the Xmotif, to project a condent attitude to passers-by. The side prole features a strong design line which intersects the silhouette while the rear door sill has a noticeable upward ick, adding to the funky look and creating a streamlined prole. The rear side windows retain the characteristic pop-out design. The roof features a "doublebubble" design, to not only provide ample headroom, but also add air to the overall design. This design uses twin

convex domes on either side of the roof, with a at central roof section, thereby forming the double-bubble. Moving to the rear, the edgy vertical theme is carried through. A large black glass panel forms the hatch, which is anked by stylish, boomerang shaped rear taillamps also incorporating aero-stabilising "Sakana" ns. The rear bumper plays host to a large "x-shaped" gloss black insert which ties in with the rear glasshouse area, giving the Aygo a sporty and sassy look. Fourteen-inch steel wheels with stylised covers provide low rolling resistance and ease of manoeuvrability. Dimensionally the new Aygo grows by 25mm in length, whilst being 5mm lower than the outgoing model, contributing to the more athletic prole of tahe newcomer.

STYLISH AYGO electrically adjustable side mirrors and air conditioning. For added convenience, a 12volt power socket and USB and auxiliary inputs for the 4speaker audio system are also catered for. X-play models receive leather treatment for the shift lever and steering wheel, creating a luxurious touch point between driver and car. A full safety suite comprising of front and front side airbags, ABS and Brake Assist (BA) is tted to all models. ISOFIX attachment points add to the already comprehensive list. These features create peace of mind for both rst time drivers, as well as those downsizing to a compact city run-around. TRAILBLAZER: COMFORTABLE AND SAFE

S

U V l u x u r y i s understandably expensive, given the size, comfort and power that comes with these large vehicles. However, such luxury should not only be for the chosen few, and that's where the Chevrolet Trailblazer enters the fray to rescue some among others who are not tycoons. The latest Trailblazer starts

from R439 300 and yet offers a lot of vooma for the specs it comes. The LT model chips in nicely with features such as air conditioner with rear overhead vents; 6-speaker sound system; bluetooth functionality; driver, front passenger and curtain airbags; cruise control; rear park assist and front and rear disc brakes. There are plenty more features others may call standard because of their frequency in newer vehicle models, things like ABS breaking for instance. However with the Trailblazer the ABS and such other "standard" features come at a technology a notch higher than ordinary. Take the HDC and HSA for example, as additional features assisting the breaking system and overall safety. HDC (Hill Decent Control) - as the vehicle proceeds down a steep slope, the driver can activate the HDC and the system will have the engine

and the brake working in unison in order to automatically limit the speed of the vehicle to the most appropriate level. This will make the descent much safer. This feature however is only available for the automatic transmissions. HSA (Hill Start Assist) - the HSA prevents the car from rolling when trying to pull away on an up or down

gradient. It still holds the car stationary after the brake is released giving the driver more safely. To further illustrate how the Chevrolet Trailblazer is a perfect combination of all your wishes, and good value for money, this vehicle is also ready for whatever lies ahead! Projector Headlights - only a v a i l a b l e w i t h t h e LT Z , provide a farther and better view, without blinding other drivers. The adjustable switch (High and Low position) helps the driver to nd a suitable setting. Fog headlamps - these enhance your vision and increase your safety while driving in a rainy or foggy situation. LED rear lamps - give a safer way to let other drivers know when you have stopped. (Also only in LTZ). The rear lamp last longer and even saves more energy. A third brake light provides more safety along with a light reecting lamp that helps create better

vision and driving dimensions from a far distance. Electric adjustable side mirrors with LED turn signal lights not only improve safety but to the beauty of Trailblazer's design. Suspension Comfort and traction are optimised with the use of an independent double wishbone suspension on the

front, and a 5-link with coils setup on the rear. Driving condence is thus assured for all speeds, on a straight road, on a curve, while empty and while loaded. This excellent setup works wonders in su p e rb l y su p p o rti n g th e vehicle in virtually all conditions. Passive Safety Double SRS airbags and safety belts with pretesioner along with a strong body frame and a highly resistant

chassis with cross members protect the passenger cabin from a collision from the side. The collapsible safety steering wheel reduces the force of impact to the chest in the event of a frontal collision. Laminated windshield retains shattered bits of the glass which would otherwise be dispersed as shards, hence effectively minimizing injury. Active Safety The highly durable body frame of Chevrolet Trailblazer is capable of withstanding even harsh bending forces. With the extra support beams inside of the door panels, impact force from a collision from the side is optimally absorbed, making the passenger cabin a safety zone. The chassis itself has been totally redesigned with special 'eight cross members' and a precise structural calculation to ensure optimum resistance against bending force. As a result, stability and traction operate at maximum both when the vehicle is empty and fully loaded. Pricing Trailblazer LT R 439 300 Trailblazer LTZ R 518 700

N-SERIES GIVES SPORT TOUCH TO THE HYUNDAI I20

W

hen the new Hyundai i20 was launched in South Africa earlier this year, the reception it received was so phenomenal that the Korean automaker did not take long to appreciate that people wanted more than just practicality from the vehicle. This appreciation led to the addition of the sporty NSeries to the local market. The 1.4-litre i20 N-Series features more power over the standard i20 and also comes equipped with a number of sporty visual enhancements to make it look even cooler. Talk of dynamites coming in small packages. Stanley Anderson, marketing director of Hyundai Automotive South Africa, says: “The Hyundai i20 was the perfect model in our range

to subject to a sporty makeover – it is a car that appeals to a younger buyer, it has fresh, modern looks and a dashing design, and it already had ne driving, characteristics and road manners – something that we enhanced a bit more with the tweaking of the suspension, new alloy rims with low prole tyres and increased engine power output.” The N-Sport adds an arguably cooler variant to the local range. This include bigger 17" alloy rims, a stainless steel free-ow exhaust and Nbadges on the front mudguards and rear door. Its

sport body kit comprises new side-skirts, front and rear bumper trim and a spoiler. The Hyundai i20 N-Series is tted with the same 1.4-litre engine found in the Fluid derivative but it has been tweaked to deliver 85 kW and 160 Nm compared to the standard 74 kW and 133 Nm.

The engine is mated to a 6speed manual transmission. The N-Series' suspension is rmer and the car sits lower on the road compared to the standard i20. Price Hyundai i20 N-Series R235 500

TIVEKA GAME FARM, A JEWEL IN THE BUSH

If there's one thing that's accurate about crticism levelled against Limpopo is its people's tendecy to undermine the province's natural heritage. Take the location of Tiveka Game Farm for example. The lodge is accessible from one of the busiest routes in the province, the R101, in the stretch between Mokopane and Polokwane. That easy part done, one is welcomed into one of "secret" natural habitats once one goes through the entrance gates of the lodge. Tiveka is located at the

foothills of the Swartberg mountains, in the Eerstgoud valley. The setting is serene and quiet, ironically not far from the busy R101 and only 30km south of the bustling city of Polokwane. The Limpopo Swartberg are not as high as their namesake in the southern Cape. The lowlying mountains add a massive allure to natural surrounding that one's hope is raised that mountains can be conquered, just by gazing at them! Visitors have the opportunity of coming closer to the mountains via the bush drive which will take you accross

the valley. Experienced tour guides have all the answers about the local environment, including animals and plants, and stories from many years ago!

Other facilities at Tiveka Game Farm include a conference centre and a wedding venue. Guests can choose to be accommodated in well furnished chalets, rondavels with two three-quarter beds or large executive rondavels with queen or king size bed. Ti v e k a i s e n d o r s e d b y Limpopo Tourism and Parks and widely recommended by various industry organisation i n c l u d i n g T E P [ To u r i s m Enterprise Partnership]. Authentic African meals at Tiveka are memorable, and will remind of this little heaven in the mountains for many years to come. Drive in for a sleepover, a weekend getaway or a longer holiday, the experince will be unforgettable.

SANDTON SUN REOPENS AFTER R210 MILLION MAKEOVER

Tsogo Sun’s iconic Sandton Sun hotel has returned to its rightful place as a sophisticated and modern landmark in the area, following an investment of R210 million into its recently undertaken refurbishment. The 31-year-old hotel is situated in a prime location within the busy and exclusive business and retail hub of Sandton, and has been repositioned as a gateway into the Sandton City shopping centre. With street and hotel access linking it with Sandton City’s new Diamond Walk, which is described as ‘Africa’s denitive luxury and super-luxury retail destination’, the hotel is a natural asset to the centre and to the city of Johannesburg. Says Marcel von Aulock, CEO o f Ts o g o S u n , “ T h i s refurbishment has strengthened Tsogo Sun’s position in Sandton even further – as a leader in Africa’s most inuential node with three hotels in excellent locations, as well as the Sandton Convention Centre. We are proud to have been a partner to Liberty and Pareto in managing this spectacular

property on their behalf and to have been the hospitality partner of Sandton City for over three decades.” Describing the revamp, Sandton Sun General Manager, Peter Davidson, says, “We focused on taking the detail into account when w e p l a n n e d t h e refurbishment, ensuring that we incorporated simple things that will make our guests’ stay more enjoyable – and that we offer everything that a guest might need.” With the refurbishment, the number of hotel rooms has reduced by eight to 326 spacious rooms and suites that have been designed to be luxurious with all the necessary conveniences and c o m f o r t . “ We c r e a t e d a feature in selected rooms where people can sit and work, ensuring we added touches such as USB points. The bathrooms have been rebuilt to luxurious standards,” says Davidson. Throughout the hotel, furniture has been refurbished and repurposed where possible, and the ambience is slick and sophisticated, while still

offering every guest a home away from home. The ‘new’ Sandton Sun, says Davidson, is now ahead of the game; it is the preferred property among the luxury hotels in the area. The refurbishment was jointly funded by the property owners, Pareto and Liberty, with responsibility for the design concept and implementation, as well as the operational issues relating to the refurb being handled by Tsogo Sun. “We are proud to have contributed to Liberty’s ability to attract luxury global brands to the Diamond Walk,

making Sandton an incredibly exciting shopping destination for locals and tourists from all over the world,” concludes Von Aulock. Tsogo Sun’s portfolio includes over 90 hotels and 14 casino and entertainment destinations throughout South Africa, Africa, the Seychelles and Abu Dhabi. The Group operates in all segments of the hotel market from Deluxe to Budget. For further information, visit tsogosun.com, follow on Twitter @TsogoSun or on Facebook.com/TsogoSun.

LIGHTHEFLAME AT THE GATEWAY HOTEL, ISANDO

S

OMETHING new and exciting is about to happen for the East Rand as the Gateway Hotel on November 22 opens its doors to become a new art hub for the East Rand. This perfectly preserved iconic 1950 building in Elandsfontein is letting its interiors to be transformed into galleries as young and established artists go on exhibition amidst dance, drama, music , poetry and fashion. After two years in South Africa observing its art marketplace, Jessica Deutsch, who has worked internationally in the art marketplace perceived that something needed to be done in making art part of everyone's life in South Africa, and not elitist. Having worked out of America, the UK, Europe and Russia her observation is that in most countries art is seen as vital to society. It is recognized as being the binding force of the people, stating its concerns and driving it forward to a better future. This is not the case in South Africa. There is little support from Government for the arts. For most people art is intimidating – appearing as something they are challenged to understand instead of realizing it is the Voice of the Nation. Lightheame (www.lightheame.com) , a grass roots movement spearheaded by Jessica Deutsch, Director Arts to Life (London –New York) and Gerald Judelman, a Johannesburg businessman and owner of The Gateway Hotel in Isando – plans to address art in a new and different way. Its aim is for people to enjoy it and see it as something that enriches their lives. It plans to show how art makes a person think different thoughts and feel different feeling. Most essential it curates its exhibitions with art work of the moment that speaks to everyone no matter his religion, belief, history or race. By engaging with art people will want to take it home. Each work a parent takes home enlarges the world of a child's mind, makes the child ask questions, aspire to new and better things. It is art that shapes

society. South Africa for over a century has had little recognition of the importance of art as communication. Lightheame exhibitions, which are to be event driven; bring together spiritual Sangoma dancing; jazz music; poetry reading and play acting to present art within the cultural framework that shapes it. The Gateway Hotel, near the Oliver Tambo airport will be open weekends or by appointment to visitors. Its exhibitions will be curated as “experiences” designed to present alternative realities to provoke feelings which only art can allow. Its program of activities will include education; lectures by local and invited overseas international scholars and experts; seminars and up close study of what constitutes quality in a work of art. Luxury art travel programs both within and outside South Africa will be available for its patron group Creating a patron group will be part of its outreach to make art important and provide a system of continuous support for

emerging artists.). Professor Ronald Jones from Harvard University, a renowned artist and art critic is scheduled to kick off educational programs at The Gateway in March 2016. The rst exhibition will include the sculptures of Professor PitikaNtuli placed in the beautiful gardens; underground boiler room and through the interior. PikikaNtuli's choice of materials and subject matter speak to the civilization of South Africa, where it has been, this moment in its time, and its dreams for the future. Other artists participating include ThontonKabeya, who works with paint and cold walnut powder to take the viewer into the fragility of children's lives The main gallery will present two realities. One if of serene landscapes and sparkling water, of mystery and pleasure created by artists such as John Vuzi Mfupi ; Cathy Layzell, Laurel Holmes and RoelofRoussow. A darker reality of crowded streets, box like dwellings; migrant peoples and rats underground is evoked

by artists such as Daniel Rankadi Solomon; Happy Dhlame and AsandaKupa. Women, who they are, how they see themselves and how others view them invite self exploration on the part of the viewer in the works of Adele Oldeld, Bongi Bengu and MarindaCombrinck. T h e G a t e w a y H o t e l o ff e r s through the arts a portal to the magical invisible world of the arts. It offers visitors a journey away from everyday life to art and culture in order to enlarge life. Visitors to the exhibition can enjoy lunch at the hotel, afternoon tea or drinks in the bar. The twenty ve bedroom hotel offers comfortable accommodation to visitors to Johannesburg and the art lled interiors are open to conference bookings. November 22 is open by invitation. The launch for the public is the following Saturday –November 28 from 10am to 6pm and thereafter weekends Until December 15 from 10 am to 6pm.
