The Magic of the Mountain Summer
The Magic of the Mountain Summer
Dear Walther Guests, valued Readers,
Ringo Starr, the legendary Beatles drummer, had a fitting album called “Stop and Smell the Roses.” This simple yet powerful message reminds us to stop and savour the beauty and small pleasures of life. In a similar vein, Hotel Walther invites its guests to stop and savour the beauty of the mountains this summer.
The highest peaks of the Eastern Alps rise in all their majestic beauty over the Upper Engadin. Delicate Alpine flowers present a breathtaking display of seemingly endless variety in the meadows and along the slopes. However, they are much more than decorative gifts of nature — they convey a powerful message of beauty and life: the universal truth that splendour and joie de vivre can thrive even in the most inhospitable environments. Enjoy this stunning spectacle on a hike or walk through the High-Alpine natural landscape of the Engadin.
We also integrate the positive power of flowers into our family-run Grand Hotel in the form of lovingly created arrangements and floral decorations. The delicate aroma and fresh atmosphere contribute to the sense of well-being experienced by our guests at the Hotel Walther. Studies have shown that a fresh bouquet of flowers evokes feelings of happiness, triggering the feel-good hormones dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin in the brain and stimulating a sense of pleasure. Discover where our floral works of art come from in this edition of the Giazetta.
A holiday at the Hotel Walther offers much more than the opportunity to relax and enjoy the amenities of our hotel. It is an invitation to connect with nature and experience the inimitable beauty of the mountain summer. We encourage you to take your time and discover the enchanting effects of these small wonders — whether you are on an active break in the mountains or a relaxing retreat at our stylishly designed hotel.
Experience the positive power of the mountains and be inspired by the beauty of the Alpine flora. Immerse yourself in this natural harmony and enjoy an unforgettable stay at the Hotel Walther.
See you soon in Pontresina,
Anne-Rose & Thomas Walther and all the friendly staff

ALPINE FLOWERS
A COLOURFUL DIVERSITY WITH OVER 500 SPECIES
Photos: Hans Lozza, Swiss National ParkSWISS NationalPark
A strictly protected wilderness for animals and plants & the oldest National Park in the Alps!
The Engadin, and in particular the Swiss National Park, offer a remarkably rich botanical diversity. Mighty — sometimes almost 1000-year-old — Swiss stone pines tower stoically over the forests; blueberries and cranberries attract both people and animals with their sweet scent; and entire mountain slopes and forests are brightly festooned with colourful flowers. Typical Eastern Alpine flora grows throughout the National Park. Most of it lies in the mountains known as the Engadin Dolomites with their predominantly alkaline soils.
Switzerland is rich in habitats, as can be seen in its array of stunning landscapes. This richness includes the Alpine habitats (High-Alpine meadows, glacier beds, wetlands, different forest types, etc.). Cities are also habitats. The more varied a landscape is, the more species can colonise them and the more varied the webs of interdependency between different species and ecosystems.
We are speaking here of biodiversity, which means the diversity of life on our planet. The preservation of biodiversity is central to the functioning of ecosystems and ultimately to the existence of our world. Biodiversity is associated with many services that are essential for us humans. Around 30,000 animal and 19,000 plant species have been identified in Switzerland to date. We can count over 500 species of Alpine flowers — 44 of which are protected.
The mountain avens, whose woody shoots creep along the ground, thereby protecting it from erosion, is frequently found here, as is the saxifrage, which blooms at up to 4,500 metres above sea level and can withstand temperatures of as low as -40°C. Somewhat rarer is the androsace helvetica, which likes to cling to rock faces, or the pygmy buttercup. This strictly protected plant is an Arctic relic of the Ice Age and is only found in Switzerland in the Swiss National Park. It is accompanied by gentian, arnica, yarrow, primrose and edelweiss, various species of thistle, lady’s slipper, blue poppy and much more. The floral images from the National Park provide a small insight into the richness of our Alpine flora. nationalpark.ch

LET THE FLOWERS SPEAK …
Masterfully arranged floral splendour at the Hotel Walther
Photos: Otto H. Schulz, Kirsten WelligOne characteristic of the Belle Epoque architecture is floral decorations. These have been brought into beautiful prominence at the Hotel Walther since the redesign. Artistic arrangements of dried, freshly cut and silk flowers create striking accents throughout our Grand Hotel. The carefully staged still lifes are the work of master florist Kirsten Wellig, who has a penchant for the unconventional and wild. She is convinced that “The extraordinary floral splendour of the Engadin deserves perfect craftsmanship, especially in hotel floristry”.
Flowers represent life in all its fullness and transience. They allow us to recognise the beauty of the moment and remind us of temporality. The floral arrangements skilfully blend art and nature into a harmonious unity that touches the hearts of the guests. The result is an ambience of inspiration and inner peace, where time seems to stand still, and thoughts can flow freely.
Flowers lend the hotel an aesthetic attraction that appeals to guests and creates a positive atmosphere. The artistic arrangements convey sophistication and elegance. These stunning floral decorations have been the subject of many “Instagrammable moments”, with guests sharing their enthusiasm with loved ones or online via social media, promoting the Walther as a must-visit hotel.
The choice of flowers and their presentation remain true to the hotel’s values and brand identity, as we are careful to work with local and seasonal flowers, ever conscious of our connection to the Engadin. The aesthetically appealing floral decorations build emotional connections to the guests, who feel welcome and valued, which leads to a positive guest experience.
The pictures of our master florist Kirsten Wellig show various still lifes in the Hotel Walther, the Steinbock, and the gardens around both hotels.
THE FLORAL ART OF KIRSTEN WELLIG
INTERVIEW WITH THE INNOVATIVE HOTEL FLORIST
WE ARE SITTING IN THE LOBBY OF THE HOTEL WALTHER, DECORATED FOR EASTER, IN CONVERSATION WITH KIRSTEN WELLIG. A NATIVE OF HANNOVER, KIRSTEN HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FLORAL DECORATION AT THE WALTHER SINCE THE REDESIGN OF THE ART NOUVEAU HOTEL IN 2017. SHE CONTRIBUTES SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE STYLISH AMBIENCE IN THE HOTEL ROOMS WITH HER ELEGANT, SKILFULLY ARRANGED ARTISTIC CREATIONS. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL – HER EXPERT TOUCH IS ALSO CALLED UPON FOR THE GARDENS.
Hotels have always held a fascination for Kirsten Wellig. When she steps into a hotel lobby, she gets a feeling for the building and immediately sees how she can place her arrangements. She remains true to herself and her style. “When a guest enters a hotel, you want them to be welcomed by a harmonious atmosphere”, she says, “without the rooms appearing over-decorated.”
What is the philosophy of Kirsten Wellig and her company “BlumenKunstWerke”? “I like working with natural materials, but I also use all sorts of artificial flowers and items that will keep well in the hotel or are already there. Sometimes I make the colours the focus; sometimes it might be the shape. I deliberately mix silk flowers with dried and fresh flowers. I love overlaps, the unconventional, sometimes the wild. To an extent, this way of working is more sustainable. We try to dry the fresh flowers we use so that we can reuse them later as dried flowers in new arrangements. There are very few usable flowers in the Engadin. During the winter, nothing grows for months. In summer, we can work with some meadow flowers, but most Alpine flowers are protected and cannot be picked at all.”
Kirsten Wellig loves working for the Hotel Walther: “Much importance is placed on skilled handwork and individuality. Apart from that, I am given a lot of freedom, which can also be a challenge. I like to discuss things with the other employees in the hotel or with interior designer Virginia Maissen. There are different areas within the Hotel Walther – the lobby has a completely different colour scheme from, say, the bar with the light objects by Rolf Sachs, or the Grand Restaurant. The style in La Trattoria is something completely different again. This variety continues through to the Steinbock and the Gondolezza. Unlike in most typical hotels, where a whole lot of flower arrangements are created and then distributed around the hotel, the work at the Walther is always varied and exciting.”
The creative hotel florist is now also responsible for the floral design of the outdoor areas, comprising the balconies, terraces, flowerbeds, etc. Pots of Mediterranean plants bloom in front of the La Trattoria. The Hotel Walther balconies are decorated in a summery, classy style; those of the Steinbock in an Alpine summery style; the Walther’s garden terrace is bright and fragrant; the lobby veranda is planted with edible herbs and other rarities as well as tomatoes and strawberries. The colourful flowerbeds around the building are designed to reflect an Alpine meadow. There is plenty to explore on a walk through the gardens of the Walther and Steinbock hotels: citrus plants, fifteen different varieties of peppermint, edelweiss, blue thistle, strawberries and thorn berries, herbs, olive bushes, roses and much more. There are also geraniums and petunias, but only in special colours and lesser-known varieties. Our absolute favourite inside is the Medinilla magnifica Melastomataceae. Outside, it's a group of begonia tuber hybrids –these bloom very profusely throughout the Engadin summer.
The collaboration with the Hotel Walther began purely coincidentally. Anne-Rose Walther had picked up a “BlumenKunstWerke” business card from the hairdresser’s, and as the renovation was nearing completion in 2017, she commissioned Kirsten Wellig to provide the floristry for the opening. “This was an unusual situation, as I had never been to the Hotel Walther before and only knew the hotel as a building site and from the plans. Nevertheless, the design we worked out was a perfect fit, and it grew into a wonderful collaboration.”
After completing her education, Kirsten Wellig wanted to explore the world and was also attracted by the great potential of floristry. She had already landed a job with an event agency in Las Vegas and had also applied for a job in London. To bridge the gap, she came to St. Moritz for a winter and stayed in the Engadin. “I really liked it up here. I love the winter, and working as a hotel florist had always been a dream.” Now, over twenty years later, she still lives here. Married to a man from Samedan, she has a 13-year-old son, and with her expert organisational skill, she has built her own floristry business, consisting of a team of three florists.
How did this come about and how does Kirsten Wellig’s successful model work? “During my maternity leave at home, I had time to think about what I wanted as a florist in the future. Back to a flower shop? In a hotel? There had always been a fascination for hotels. In the 5-Star sector, however, you don't have much freedom as a florist, and the smaller establishments don’t have their own florists. In many places, the floral decorations were very arbitrary and interchangeable, with someone from the team taking on the task, or even the hotelier. I wondered if I could offer my services by the hour or on a subscription basis. That’s exactly how I started — and my business really took off after the reopening of the Hotel Walther, going from strength to strength! I received enquiries from restaurants and smaller hotels and sold cut-flower subscriptions. I used decorative materials that were available in the hotels. You can’t buy everything new every year; using artificial and dried flowers is more sustainable, and in combination with fresh flowers it is effective. We now offer decoration materials for hire and for sale. I also like working with the hotel staff. At the Walther, for example, we take care of the purchasing and design on the floors, and the chambermaids are then responsible for maintenance. Outside, we create a design for the balcony boxes, and the in-house gardener then puts it together. Our team now also offers floral design for events and weddings, for private individuals and holiday flats. I am passionate about my craft and grateful for the trust and freedom I have been given in my work.”
