An Evening with Author

MARK BIEDERMAN

MON., JAN. 27 8:00 PM THE ACADEMY SKELTON FAMILY LECTURE HALL $12 advanced paid reservations, $15 at door

Mark Biederman will speak about the extraordinary story of his twenty year quest to find gold coins which his father’s family buried in their backyard in Poland just prior to being deported by the Nazis into concentration camps. His father survived the war but died when the author was a teenager, leaving him only with the knowledge that he had buried coins somewhere in Poland, and no information about his family. During his quest, Biederman uncovered many interesting and disturbing facts about his father and mother and their families, such as the fact that his father was the third person on Oskar Schindler’s list and had a chance meeting with Adolf Hitler, and that his mother was selected as a cook for the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele.

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir “Man’s Search For Meaning” has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. His book has sold over 12 million copies.

EXCERPTS FROM "MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING"

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” “We have come to know man as he really is. After all, man is that being who invented the gas chambers of Auschwitz; however, he is also that being who entered those gas chambers upright, with the Lord’s prayer or the Shema Yisrael on his lips.” “It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us.”

EMBRACING A LIFE OF SPIRITUALTY Just like the body needs its essential “minerals” and “vitamins” to function properly, so too does the soul. It has strong, powerful, unstoppable, and insatiable needs and it will not give us peace until we feed it the healthy “nutrients” it needs – a life of spirituality. MONDAY, APRIL 27, 8 P.M.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE HOLY KIND Throughout our lives, we all experience momentous “Close Encounters with G-d” and “Close Encounters with our Fellow Man.” What do we do with those precious encounters? Do we cherish and preserve them or allow them to fly off into outer space as if they never mattered or meant anything at all? MONDAY, MAY 4, 8 P.M.
