Holocaust historian Max Wallace will talk about his new book, In the Name of Humanity: The Secret Deal to End the Holocaust, which details an audacious scheme by a rescue committee of Swiss ultra-Orthodox Jews led by a remarkable woman named Recha Sterbuch. Wallace will reveal newly discovered archival documents proving that the Committee deceived SS chief Heinrich Himmler into destroying the gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau and terminating the Final Solution in November 1944, a full six months before the end of the war, thus saving tens of thousands of Jews.

On a summer day in 1945, an Orthodox man and his grown son return to a village in Hungary while the villagers prepare for the wedding of the town clerk’s son. The townspeople – suspicious, remorseful, fearful, and cunning – expect the worst and behave accordingly. The town clerk fears the men may be heirs of the village’s deported Jews and expects them to demand their illegally acquired property back.

THE CONEJO JEWISH ACADEMY INVITES YOU TO A YOM HASHOA FILM PRESENTATION
Barry Avrich’s gripping documentary tells the fascinating story of Ben Ferencz—the last surviving Nuremberg prosecutor. After witnessing Nazi concentration camps shortly after liberation, Ferencz became lead prosecutor in the Einsatzgruppen case at Nuremberg, which has been called the biggest murder trial in history. He was 27 years old and it was his first trial. All 22 Nazi officials tried for murdering over a million people were convicted. Ferencz went on to advocate for restitution for Jewish victims of the Holocaust and later for the establishment of the International Criminal Court. His fight for justice for victims of atrocity crimes continues today.

Jeannie Opdyke Smith will share the story of her mother, Irene Gut Opdyke, a Polish Catholic woman who risked her life to save Jews during the Holocaust. Her bravery won her honors from Poland and Israel. Her story, filled with horror and hate, also carries a message that faith, love and hope can triumph over evil. A support group allows you the opportunity to share your grief and fears with others experiencing similar pain while receiving guidance from a professional counselor on ways to cope. Open to people of all faiths and denominations who lost a spouse, parent, child or sibling in the past two years The group will have a minimum and maximum amount of participants.
More than half (55%) of Americans say they pray every day, according to a 2014 Pew Research Center survey, whole 21% say they pray weekly or monthly. BUT WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF PRAYER? CAN WE CAUSE G-D TO CHANGE HIS MIND? IS HE IN NEED OF INCESSANT PRAISE? Rabbi Yisroel Levine 6 Tuesdays 8 p.m. May 7, 14, 21, 28, June 4, 11 The Academy— Center for Jewish life $50.00/$75.00 per couple (includes textbook)
This six-week course aims to make prayer more personally meaningful by addressing some of the philosophical, emotional, and practical barriers that make it difficult to pray. By examining the history of how the Jewish prayers developed, as well as the meaning of the most notable prayers, participants will become more comfortable with tapping into Jewish prayer as a means of connection to their heritage.

BAKE.PRAY.LOVE. BAKE Learn the art of Challah Baking, from the making of the dough to a variety of braiding techniques. PRAY There is a very special Mitzvah given only to women to separate a piece of dough when baking bread/Challah. There is an ancient Kabbalistic and mystical teaching that the moment of Hafrashat Challah (separation of the dough) is a most auspicious time to pray on behalf of those who are in need, especially for the ill. We will learn more about this ancient tradition and join together in a most powerful prayer for those in need of G-dly intervention. Please bring their Hebrew names and those of their mother.
