Laying out pages at the printing press in Kfar Chabad, Israel. (The Menachem Wolff Collection)

KEHOT PUBLICATION SOCIETY is the publishing division of the worldwide Chabad-Lubavitch movement and is the largest non-profit translator, publisher and distributor of Jewish literature, Chasidic texts and children’s titles in the world.

Dear seeker, student and scholar, “There are two levels in the study of Torah,” the Baal Shem Tov once said, “Torah of the mind and Torah of the heart. The mind contemplates, comprehends and understands; the heart feels. I have come to reveal Torah as it extends to the heart as well.” In 1940, when Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch arrived in New York, admirers explained that passionate, proactive Jewish life was for the old country. Here in “the Golden Country,” bare ritual observance sufficed, and even that was in decline. Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak maintained that by sharing the “Torah of the heart,” the Jewish soul in America could soar to the heights of any in history. As one of his early activities, he founded Kehot to publish educational curricula and prayer books, halachic and Chasidic texts in their original Hebrew and Yiddish, and at the same time made these available in English, so that they were accessible to American Jews. Under the visionary guidance of his son-in-law and successor, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of blessed memory, millions of volumes on Jewish essentials, history, Chasidism, mysticism, inspiration and the Jewish way of life have been published in thirteen languages.

We invite you to explore, experience and enjoy!

Except where otherwise attributed, the photos in this catalog are the work of Mal Warshaw in his collection Tradition: Orthodox Jewish Life in America, Schocken 1976. Over the course of two years, Warshaw photographed the Jewish community in Brooklyn, NY, “for if there is a secret to the Jewish genius of survival,” he wrote, “I suspect the answer can be found there.” Mr. Warshaw gifted his collection to Chabad via Kehot Publication Society.

At Home in the Synagogue In 1978, Kehot introduced the first modern-vernacular Hebrew/English Siddur, translated by Rabbi Nissen Mangel, providing meaning to the prayers. In 2003, our Annotated Series reimagined the English reader’s prayer experience with a comprehensive set of intros, instructions and numerous other innovations.

As for me... MY PRAYER is a profoundly illuminating commentary on the daily prayers, authored by the late Rabbi Dr. Nissan Mindel. These classic volumes and their thorough introductions will guide you into the deep, often mystical content of the prayers. First published in 1972, the recent reissue of this work includes previously unpublished essays on Sefirat HaOmer, and prayers for the High-Holidays, Festivals and special events. Volume One: Weekday morning, afternoon and evening prayers, blessing after meals, the prayer before retiring to bed. Volume Two: Shabbat and Festival prayers with a short, incisive introduction exploring the unique nature of Shabbat.

“To love the L-rd your G-d and to serve Him with all your heart...” (Deuteronomy 11:13): Which is the service of the heart? It is prayer. —Taanit 2a G-d does not need our prayer; He can do without our prayers, but we cannot do without our prayers. It is good for us to acknowledge our dependence on G-d for our very life, our health, our daily bread, and our general welfare. —From Introduction to My Prayer

Humility is often misunderstood as simply the lack of boastfulness: We are “humble” if we feel superior to others so long as we don’t boast about it! True humility, however, is learned from Moses. We should be fully aware of whatever greatness we possess, but attribute it to G‑d rather than to ourselves. This allows us to respect other people and see them in a positive light, inasmuch as G‑d has blessed them with their own unique qualities. —From Daily Wisdom

The Study of ChasiduT

What is Chasidism?

Human beings are a paradox: the soul, a creature of heaven, is most at home in a spiritual state. But the soul is hosted in an earthly vessel—the body—that is drawn to selfish pleasures. Can these opposites effectively coexist? Chasidism, introduced around 1734, provides a refreshing new definition of body and soul as complementary halves to one full existence. Our job is to reveal the transcendent unity of both; to infuse holiness from the Divinely-given Torah into daily life and draw on all personal resources to lift ourselves and our environments to a higher place.

The Rebbes and how they shaped Chabad

Rabbi Menachem Mendel The “Tzemach Tzedek”, 1789–1866 Fused the study of Chasidism with classical Torah texts. Sourced Rabbi Schneur Zalman’s principles and teachings in Scripture, Talmud, Midrash, and Kabbalah. Famous work: Shaalot UTeshuvot Tzemach Tzedek Biography: The Third Judge (p. 54)

The Baal Shem Tov Rabbi Yisrael, 1698–1760 Introduced Chasidism with a focus on seamless harmony between heaven and earth and of unconditional love for every Jew’s essential holiness, independent of the person's knowledge or actions. Famous work: Keter Shem Tov Biography: The Great Mission (p. 52)

The Maggid of Mezerich

Rabbi Shmuel of Lubavitch 1834–1882 First to teach Chasidism in serial form, elaborating concepts over numerous weeks and months, inserting lengthy expositions into the sources. Famous work: Torat Shmuel Biography: Rabbi Shmuel of Lubavitch (audio) (p. 54)

Rabbi Shalom Dovber of Lubavitch

Rabbi DovBer, d. 1772

1860–1920

As a revered Talmudist, strengthened the teachings of his master the Baal Shem Tov, earning validation for Chasidism among the learned elite as an authentic path in Jewish thought and practice.

As the “Maimonides of Chasidism”, rounded-out numerous fundamental topics in Chasidic thought and established Tomchei Temimim, the first yeshiva with Chasidism as a subject.

Famous work: Maggid Devarav Leyaakov

Famous work: Yom Tov Shel Rosh Hashanah 5666 (see p. 38)

Biography: The Great Maggid

Biography: See Divine Speech (p. 38)

Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi

Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch

The Alter Rebbe, 1745–1812

1880–1950

Founded the Chabad branch of Chasidism, codifying the Baal Shem Tov’s and Maggid’s teachings of Divine concepts into principles accessible to the average human mind.

Analyzed Chasidism in profound depth through colorful and creative writings— including prolific histories of early Chasidim—to discover the underlying core of the topics. Published the first Yiddish and English-language texts.

Famous work: Tanya (pp. 30-33) Biography: Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi: A Biography (p. 52)

Famous work: Likkutei Dibburim (see p. 54) Biography: The Heroic Struggle (p. 55)

Rabbi DovBer of Lubavitch The Mitteler Rebbe, 1773–1827 Expounded his father’s teachings, delivering complex academic elucidations and detailed examples. Famous work: Torat Chaim

The Lubavitcher Rebbe Rabbi Menachem Mendel, 1902–1994 Summarized and reframed the expositions of his predecessors—even the most abstract and profound concepts—as practically and personally relevant to every modern day Jew. Famous work: Likkutei Sichot (see pp. 18–23)

Knowledge and Faith Translated by Rabbi Eli Kaminetzky When present, faith can lift a person infinitely. But faith can depart as easily as it comes. Knowledge, by contrast, changes us definitively. Rabbi Schneur Zalman contrasts faith in G-d with the obligation to “know” Him, and guides us to adopt the best qualities of both. LANGUAGE

Channeling the Divine

Translated by Rabbis Shais Taub and Avraham D. Vaisfiche

Edited by Rabbi Avraham D. Vaisfiche

The monthly birth of a new moon is of deep significance in Judaism and is particularly celebrated by women. Girls approaching Bat Mitzvah will appreciate the challenge of studying this profound discourse on the meaning of Rosh Chodesh and the ideas that touch on their unique identity as Jewish women.

Delivered on the occasion of the Rebbe Rashab’s Bar Mitzvah, the discourse describes the cosmic impact of performing the mitzvah of tefillin, and the special connection between this mitzvah and the age of Bar Mitzvah. Among Chabad Chasidim, a Bar Mitzvah boy celebrates his new responsibilities as a Jewish adult by publicly delivering this discourse. LANGUAGE

All for the Sake of Heaven Translated by Rabbi Zalman Abraham Judaism abhors abstinence from physical dealings, pushing us instead to channel them toward a greater goal. There are three distinct ways of relating to G-d: 1) As a child with a natural connection. 2) As a loyal and loving servant who derives great pleasure from doing G-d’s will. 3) As a simple servant who does his work consistently because he has no identity outside of being a servant of G-d. Which is preferable? The Simple Servant is part of a legendary series of sixty-one discourses delivered from the beginning of 1905 through the winter of 1907, on a wealth of topics and profundity. At the wedding of his daughter in 1928, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak related that the souls of the bride’s and groom’s ancestors descend and join the wedding celebration. He then delivered a discourse that contained teachings of each of the previous ChabadLubavitch Rebbes, ancestors of the bride and groom, in effect “inviting” them to participate at the wedding. In 1953, the Rebbe expounded on this discourse and in 1978, in honor of his fiftieth wedding anniversary, edited and published the exposition now commonly recited at weddings as a symbolic invitation to the Rebbe and the previous Rebbes to participate. --From The Majestic Bride

The Lubavitcher Rebbe

Translated by Rabbi Yosef Marcus

Rabbi Menachem Mendel – 1902-1994

In this sense the Greek Empire is very much alive. Victory of Light tells us how to fight back.

The sheer range of this work as the written heritage of ChabadLubavitch is prolific. The talks delivered (and later rewritten) by Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak between 1929 and 1950 embrace childhood memories: vignettes of humble giants, recollections of interrogations by the Russian authorities, and, of course, creative expositions of concepts crucial to the teachings of Chasidus. PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy Beyond the individual teachings of Chasidut, the broader premise and concepts of Chasidut as explored in these volumes are an invaluable framework for a person’s life.

A favourite contention of the ‘mysticist,’ as erroneous as it is ignorant and mischievous, creates an imaginary tension between Halachah and Kabbalah... Suffice it to note that most of the greatest Halachic authorities and codifiers were also Kabbalists.

The Mystical Dimension Rabbi Jacob Immanuel Schochet The Mystical Tradition Vol. 1 An overview of Jewish mysticism, its place within Judaism, what distinguishes it from non-Jewish mysticism, and the significance of its dissemination in modern times. Deep Calling Unto Deep Vol. 2 Prayer and repentance are two fundamental principles of Judaism. This volume helps make them more consciously vital, exploring the spiritual dimensions of each of them. Chassidic Dimensions Vol. 3 Though certain ideas—universal Ahavat Yisroel, the figure of the Rebbe-Tzaddik—are strongly identified with Chasidic thought, they derive wholly from Talmud, Midrash and other classic traditions. 47 THE STUDY OF CHASIDUT

The Study of ChasiduT

Rabbi Dr. Nissan Mindel (1912–1999) was a distinguished author and editor who recorded a great deal of Chabad history. He was trained in European yeshivot, studied law and political science and received his Ph.D. in Semitic Languages from Columbia University.

The Divine Commandments Rabbi Dr. Nissan Mindel This thin volume, first published in 1945, provides insight into the power of tangible deed as a means of bringing life and G-dly kindness into the physical world. Organized into seven thematic segments, this brief work answers many basic questions about man and G-d.

Rabbi Zalman I. Posner (1927–2014) was one of the first students trained at the American Lubavitcher Yeshivah, and one of the earliest and best-known expositors of Chasidism in English. In 1949, Rabbi Posner and his wife Risya came to Nashville, Tennessee as the first Chabad emissaries to the state, a position they held for 53 years.

Rabbi Dr. Jacob Immanuel Schochet (1935–2013) was a unique scholar and academic, and an eloquent defender of traditional Jewish belief. In addition to his various professorships, he was a prolific translator and author of Jewish philosophy and a celebrated orator on topics of faith and the authenticity of the Torah. Rabbi Nissen Mangel was just ten years old when he miraculously evaded the ‘selection’ and gas chambers to become Auschwitz’s youngest inmate. He survived multiple encounters with Dr. Joseph Mengele and the infamous Death March and has gone on to live a life of communal devotion and extraordinary scholarly achievement.

FAITH & INSPIRATION

“If words are the pen of the heart,” taught Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, “then song is the pen of the soul.” The soul’s pen, however, writes in the opposite direction from the heart’s. While words carry meaning downwards from G‑d’s own primal consciousness into the minds of sages and the lips of prophets to inscribe them upon human hearts, song carries the soul upwards to be absorbed within the Infinite Light.

THE SHULCHAN ARUCH NEW BILINGUAL EDITION

Designed to Live By Shulchan Aruch HaRav—the Code of Jewish Law by Rabbi Schneur Zalman— is a fundamental guide to Jewish living. Translated into English in 2002, this completely redesigned edition delivers a new level of approachability and convenience, fusing the familiar flow of a Hebrew Sefer with the best layout practices of a bilingual reference.

Shulchan Aruch

of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi Translated and annotated by Rabbis Eliyahu Touger and Uri Kaploun In Torah-observant circles, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi is widely referred to as the “Author of Tanya” and the “Rav.” The Tanya explores the esoteric dimension of the Torah as it relates to body and soul and the higher worlds. By contrast, the Shulchan Aruch HaRav concerns itself with the here and now of daily existence. Notably, the author's name Schneur, meaning “two lights,” alludes to these two dimensions of Torah—the mystical and the legal—and their intersection at which Jewish life finds its fullest expression.
