SANTA CATERINA MARKET_KRIS PETERSON + 1999-2005 + Urban project for Foment de Ciutat Vella S.A. + Located in Ciutat Vella not only translates to Old City but is considered the center of the city. Located near the coast in the Gothic Quarter, Exiample lies on one side which the Mediterranean sea lies on the other. + ”Geometrically ingenious roof structure made of colorfully glazed stone tiles by Ceramica Cumella” + ”Where the squares, the constant drawing of widening’s overflying the street as the only urban mechanism.” + The goal of this project was urban related. Enric Miralles and Bendetta wanted a project that allowed people to inhabit the space. + A project that became a rehabilitation and a new construction + creating residential density + function interior + Caterina facades change rhythms, and is overshadowed by the roof in more ways than one. + Fluid vaults are quite fluid + The shopping points decrease, rationalizing the access and services systems. BRIEF HISTORY OF PROJECT + Arechaeological site + Now a Museu d’Historia de Barcelona from Bronze Age to up with the latest manifestations of contemporary architecture. + The remains found in the site are from a 13th century Convent of the Preachers + Dominican convent of Santa Caterina get placed in the seat of the Council of the City Cent. + 1835 this site becomes the second market of Barcelona + Commissioned by Barcelona’s municipal policy of urban developement + Goal of municipal policy of urban developement to clean up area and providing it with renovated facilities + The Via Laietana was built in the 20th century to connect the Eixample with the port of the Medditterran Sea. + This broke up the area into different sections + The area was big on industry, creating some of Barcelona’s first textile mills it soon became densely populated throughout the 18th century + Over populated, poor conditions for the working class
