ARCHITECT’S STORY - Toyo Ito Toyo Ito, born 1 June 1941) is a Japanese architect known for creating conceptual architecture, in which he seeks to simultaneously express the physical and virtual worlds. He is a leading exponent of architecture that addresses the contemporary notion of a “simulated” city, and has been called “one of the world’s most innovative and influential architects.” In 2013, Ito was awarded the Pritzker Prize, one of architecture’s most prestigious prizes. As Ito was seen to be a front-runner for the Pritzker Prize for the 10 years before winning, his award is seen as possibly reverting to honouring more experienced, elderly architects with a lifetime history of projects, given the younger awardees in recent years. Ito was born in Seoul to Japanese parents on 1 June 1941. In 1943, he moved to Japan with his mother and two sisters, and graduated from the University of Tokyo’s department of architecture in 1965. After working for Kiyonori Kikutake Architect and Associates from 1965 to 1969 (alongside Itsuko Hasegawa), in 1971 he started his own studio in Tokyo, named Urbot (“Urban Robot”). In 1979, the studio name was changed to Toyo Ito & Associates.Throughout his early career Ito constructed numerous private house projects that expressed aspects of urban life in Japan. His most remarkable early conceptual contributions were made through projects of this scale, such as White U (1976) and Silver Hut (1984). With the Pao for the Tokyo Nomad Girl projects in 1985 and 1989, Ito presented a vision of the life of an urban nomad, illustrative of typical lifestyles during the bubble economy period in Japan.Tower of Winds (1986) and Egg of Winds (1991) are interactive landmarks in public spaces, resulting from a creative interpretation of contemporary technical possibilities.Whilst their function is in fact exhaust air outlets for the underground system below, their significance lies in Ito’s treatment of their opacity, one of the hallmarks of his work. Whilst appearing solid during the day, the perforated aluminium structures “dissolve” at night through the use of computer-controlled light systems which form an interactive display representing measured data such as noise levels in their surrounding vicinity. Toyo Ito’s office is known as a training ground for talented younger architects. Architects who previously worked for his office include Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (KDa), Katsuya Fukushima, Makoto Yokomizo, and Akihisa Hirata.

BRIEF HISTORY OF PROJECT Porta Fira Towers Hotel and offices building in the Plaza Europa. Barcelona The extension of the fira de barcelona in montjuïc is planned half inside and half outside Barcelona’s municipal term, at the back of the Montjuïc hill, following the Gran Via avenue straight to L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. Japanese architect Toyo Ito won the competition for the masterplan of the project. The exposition center will be composed of 9 pavilions and two 114-meter towers, which will be used for hotels and offices. The two towers will be the highest buildings in Hospitalet. The hotel will also be the second highest hotel in the Barcelona metropolitan area. The buildings feature energy saving devises, a water recovery system waste and the use of solar energy. Each building has a symbolic organic shape, which should bring to mind elements found in nature such as rivers and clouds. Natural light, well-conceived interior illumination and an adequate, functional organization, accessible to the different areas of the grounds, all dominate this design. The towers (and the whole project) are due to be finished in 2009 and are conceived as a landmark, one (a curvilinear red tower, the hotel) being the counterpart of the other (red, organic tower, placed inside a translucid prism, for offices). Located between the airport and the city of Barcelona, the Porta Fira Towers intend to become the gateway to l’Hospitalet de Llobregat and the city of Barcelona. EXTENDED CONTEXT

IMMEDIATE CONTEXT

BASE DRAWINGS OF PROJECT FUNCTIONAL PROGRAM The project consists of three main uses: hotel use, office use and commercial use. The various uses are distributed as follows: The hotel program was introduced in 28 plants spread over PB+25 and two technical floors and a gross floor area of 34,688 m2 in which are located approximately 344 rooms and 2 technical floors. The remaining space is distributed in a hall, a large banquet area, restaurant, conference and services areas (back/front office y bach of house). The offices program office, distributed in PB+22 and two technical floors, distributes and open floor plans of great structural light in a gross floor area of 45,420 m2. The commercial program is located within the parcel for offices, on the ground floor, building the façade that defines the park and closing the commercial ring Plaza Europa. Location: Plaza Europa. L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. Barcelona. Gross Floor Area: 80.108 m2 Architects: Toyo Ito (ITO AA) and Fermín Vázquez - b720 Arquitectos Project: 2004-2006 Execution: 2006-2009

BASE DRAWINGS OF PROJECT

Its unique appearance, along with its 110 meters in height and the total gross floor area of 80,108 m2 of the two towers, turned the project into one of the new milestones in the new Plaza Europa, in the town of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and a clear reference in the Barcelona’s skyline.

BASE DRAWINGS OF PROJECT

Office building The office building orthogonal in form and positioned perpendicular to the central axis of Plaza Europa – marks the end of the plaza and engages in a dialogue with the bordering structures symmetrically located on the other side of Gran Vía (two orthogonal towers perpendicular to the axis). This is even more apparent when one sees that when the core of the office building reaches the façade it is cut by an invisible vertical plane that is aligned with the central axis of Plaza Europa. The office tower complements and responds to the perceived twisting and movement of the hotel building. At first glance it appears to be a pure volume with a glass curtain wall set back slightly with respect to the floor slab. However, the red vertical core of the building, situated on the edge of the ground plan, is organic in form and reflects the structure of the hotel tower. The two towers are also linked by a shared atrium. A large base joins the towers and amplifies the impact of their structure. The unique look of the buildings, combined with their 110 m height and a total built surface area of 80,108 m2, makes the project a milestone for the new Plaza Europa and the city of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, and a clear reference point on the Barcelona skyline.

MATERIALITY FOCUS Variable geometry The project consists of two towers that perform a subtle dialogue between them. The hotel (PB +25), is designed to turn on itself changing its perception as it is surrounded. Its skin is made of a system of red metal tubes placed with a certain inclination. This perception is complemented by the second tower, which will house offices (PB+22). A pure volume at the first sight, with a glass curtain wall, but the core of which also turns red on itself, becoming, in this way, a reflection of the hotel tower. Between the two towers, and connecting it, there is a common atrium. The relationship between the ball-and-socket joints, the aluminium tubes, and the supporting structure is what allows the entire surface of the faรงade to gradually and continuously adapt, expressing rotation, movement and growth as the tower rises upwards. The tower is divided into three thirds. The geometry of the lower two thirds is based on variable rotation and displacement, whereas in the upper third, the ground plan is deformed and scaled up to increase the surface area and perimeter of the tower.

MATERIALITY FOCUS

The hotel is contained in a distorted cylinder, expanding towards the top and clad in red metal panels.

Called Porta Fira Towers, the two buildings are linked by a common atrium.

The office building is a rectangular volume with a glass curtain wall and red motif running through the centre.
