ARENA AND AQUATIC INFORMATION

GO FOR A SKATE

The arena at Brennan Park Recreation Centre provides ice time for hockey, figure skating, skills training and leisure skating. Drop in for a public skate or choose a quiet time to supervise and support your skater-in-training. Skate rentals are available upon arrival for adults, children and youth. GO FOR A SWIM

Brennan Park Aquatic Centre is home to one of the cleanest and most accessible pool facilities in the Sea to Sky corridor. Learn more about our pool features, swim lessons, public swims and shared pool spaces and lifeguard-swimmer ratios at squamish.ca/pool

SKATE ARENA

PUBLIC SKATE

Everyone is welcome! Come and meet up with friends and socialize while skating in this fun environment. Skate patrol are on the ice to supervise and support skaters. No strollers on the ice during this time.

FAMILY SKATE

For parents and children to skate together in a slower-paced setting. Children must be accompanied by a paid adult. Skate aids and strollers with clean wheels are welcome. Skate patrol staff are on the ice to supervise and support families.

PARENT & CHILD SKATE

Come practice fundamental skating skills in a fun, relaxed environment. Skate aids and strollers with clean wheels are welcome. Children must be accompanied by a paid adult. Ice may be shared with Recreation Programs.

SENSORY SKATE

Practice skating in a relaxed environment: no music and soft lighting. Skate aids and strollers with clean wheels are welcome. Toys available to encourage exploration. Children must be accompanied by a paid adult.

ADULT DROP-IN

HOCKEY (19yrs+)

A chance to drop in and work on some hockey skills. Maximum of 20 players plus two goalies (goalies are free). Full gear required. Participants must be at least 19 years of age. Online pre‑registration recommended due to limited capacity.

ADULT DROP-IN STICK & PUCK

(19yrs+)

Helmets, gloves and ice hockey stick required. No goalies or scrimmages. Work on your skating skills in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Participants must be at least 19 years of age. This is a slower-paced program so please be courteous of all participants. Online pre‑registration recommended due to limited capacity.

OVERTIME HOCKEY

FOR 60yrs+

Overtime Hockey is an ice time for players 60yrs+ to get together and enjoy a low-key hockey game. Full gear required.

The following programs are only available during school holiday breaks. Pre -registration recommended due to limited capacity:

While all hockey programs have mandatory helmet use, we strongly recommend the use of helmets for all arena programs.

GYMNASTICS INFORMATION

If you are new to our programs and uncertain of the appropriate level, or have questions about the required registration forms, please email your questions to Amanda at squamishgymnastics@hotmail.com

CLASSES FILL QUICKLY!

If your desired class is full at the time of registration, waitlist your child. All efforts are made to accommodate gymnastic waitlists.

DO NOT wait to submit required registration forms. Documents need to be verified, data entered and submitted to Gymnastics BC well in advance of the program start date to meet insurance requirements.

FORMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AT THE START OF CLASSES.

REGISTRATION STEPS

STEP 1: REGISTER FOR YOUR CLASS AND MEMBERSHIP

Register online or in person at Brennan Park Recreation Centre for gymnastics classes at squamish.ca/rec.

Select and pay for a Squamish Gymnastics Annual Membership at the time of registration (valid Sept 1, 2024 – Aug 31, 2025). Memberships are mandatory and non-refundable.

STEP 2: COMPLETE “INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP REGISTRATION FORM”

You can find the form on squamish.ca/rec.

Ensure all personal information has been included and the form is signed. You can ignore the boxes in the middle of the form. Email form to: squamishgymnastics@hotmail.com

STEP 3: COMPLETE “ASSUMPTION OF RISKS/WAIVER”

The Assumption of Risks/Waiver is a digital form and can be found on squamish.ca/rec. Complete the form with your child’s information. Select ‘Squamish Gymnastics’ from the list of clubs in the drop-down menu.

STEP 4: FOR PARENT & TOT GYMNASTICS ONLY

Complete a separate digital Assumption of Risks/Waiver for any adult that will be entering the gym or accompanying your child to gymnastics. These waivers must be completed in the adult’s own name (not the child’s).

Only one adult per child permitted in the gym at a time, but you may alternate, we will keep waivers on file.

PARENT & TOT

Exploration movement and play in a safe and social environment.

Physical and emotional literacy are the foundation of parent and tot programming designed for children under five. Participants and their parent or caregiver will take part in activities and experiences at their own individual pace while forming essential movement, imagination and social fundamentals for structured and unstructured play.

Exploration and discovery of fundamental movement through imaginative play.

Come play, explore and move your body in our gym full of slides, climbers, riding toys, sports equipment and more.

(1–3yrs)

A smaller take on ‘Little Sneakers’. Enjoy physical activity in a social space full of slides, soft blocks, tunnels, and more.

TOT RIDERS

(1–5yrs)

Zoom around the gym on our ride-on cars and trikes. You can bring your own run-bike & helmet too.

NEW! FAMILY YOGA

FAMILY YOGA WITH HANNAH (2–6yrs)

Yoga and breath work, intertwined with stories, games and songs to engage both you and your little one!

PRESCHOOL AGE

Instilling healthy habits and behaviour through learning and fun. We provide a safe, friendly and comfortable environment for learning, routine and play. Participants will develop skills and techniques through engaging activities and games as they discover their passion and make new friends.

TOT GLIDERS

Learn the FUNdamentals of skating. Beginner skaters learn skills using engaging themes, games, and songs.

GYMNASTICS

PRESCHOOL INDEPENDENT

GYMNASTICS (4yrs)

A fun environment to explore and develop physical literacy, movement fundamentals and beginner skills.

LEAP

Participants will learn about the world around them through activities, exploration, movement and play.

To ensure you know that a spot has come available, add communication@xplorrecreation.com to your Contacts and/or Safe Senders list. Also check your Junk/ Spam folder for these emails and mark as “Not Junk”. These steps help the notifications make it to your inbox so you can respond before your spot expires. As a space comes available, waitlisted participants are notified by email. You have up to 24 hours to accept or decline before the system automatically declines for you and the space is offered to the next person.

Creative indoor and outdoor activities, camps and courses.

Deepen your skills and knowledge outside of the classroom through a range of day camps, certifications, private lessons and programs for all ages and abilities. Choose from our balanced selection of creative sports, art and training programs to fit your interest and lifestyle.

Spend your day off from school with us. The day is filled with a variety of activities, games and sports.

HOLIDAY CAMPS

Join us for a full day of creative indoor and outdoor activities, games and sports at Brennan Park.

CERTIFICATIONS (10yrs+)

BABYSITTER TRAINING

(11–14yrs)

Calling all future babysitters! This course provides students with emergency first aid, safety tips, and information on games that are suitable for all ages.

HOME ALONE

(10–12yrs)

Is your pre-teen ready for the responsibility? This course prepares children with skills and knowledge to be safe and feel confident when home alone.

DANCE GROOVE

Basic dance techniques to build muscle, coordination, flexibility, & balance. No dance experience required.

GYMNASTICS

GYMNASTICS FREESTYLE FUNDAMENTALS

Introductory classes for all genders and will increase fitness, develop confidence, and build fundamental movement skills.

SQUAMISH GYMNASTICS

ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM

Have fun and get fit! Learn and develop gymnastics skills on the bars, beam, floor and vault following the 14 levels of the CANGYM Program

SPORTS

FLOOR HOCKEY

Skills, drills, and fun! Each session includes a simple warm-up and a focus on fundamental movement skills and modified training activities.

SWIMMING LESSONS AT A GLANCE

0–2 years (PARENT & TOT)

JELLYFISH: 3–12 months

Infants will be getting their face wet, blowing bubbles and floating with the help of their caregiver.

GOLDFISH: 12–24 months

Toddlers learn how to enter and exit the water with help from their parent/caregiver, and will play games to encourage them to get their face wet and blow bubbles.

SEAHORSE: 24–36 months

With help from their parent/caregiver toddlers will develop skills such as submersion and opening their eyes underwater. Floats and kicks are learnt through games.

3–5 years

OCTOPUS

Octopus is a transitional level which transfers the preschooler to the care of the instructor.

CRAB

Preschoolers will learn submersion skills and continue to work on floats, glides, and kicking with buoyant objects.

ORCA

Preschoolers will learn how to submerge and exhale underwater, retrieve objects, and will continue developing their floating, gliding and kicking skills.

SEA LION

Preschoolers will become skilled at retrieving objects from the bottom in chest- deep water and performing front and side glide. Front crawl with a PFD is introduced.

NARWHAL

Front and back crawls are introduced as well as interval fitness training. Preschoolers will also learn how to tread water and perform vertical whip kick with a buoyant aid.

6–12 years

SWIMMER 1

These beginners will learn how to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. Floats, glides and kicking skills are introduced.

SWIMMER 2

These swimmers will learn how to tread water, develop kicking skills, and will be introduced to front crawl and back crawl.

SWIMMER 3

These swimmers will learn Swim to Survive® skills, whip kick on back and will further develop their front crawl and back crawl.

SWIMMER 4

These swimmers will learn the Swim to Survive® standard and start to develop breaststroke. Front crawl and back crawl are further developed.

SWIMMER 5 & 6

Swimmer 5 will further their Swim to Survive® skills and start to develop eggbeater kick. Swimmer 6 will master eggbeater and scissor kick. Breaststroke, front crawl, and back crawl distances are developed specific to each level.

SWIMMER 7, 8 & 9

Swimmers refine stroke techniques and add 100m distance increases each level. Water proficiency skills include swimming with clothes, ready position, and feet-first/head-first surface dives.

12–15 years

PLEASE NOTE:

If it becomes apparent on Day 1 that a child has been registered in a swim level they are not ready for (ie: registered in Swimmer 3 and have not completed Swimmer 2), one of our supervisors will speak with the parent and the child will have to be withdrawn from lessons.

HOT TIPS FOR REGISTRATION DAY

PROGRAMS ARE VISIBLE ONLINE ONE WEEK BEFORE REGISTRATION DAY

Use this time to practice navigating, see all that is on offer and make sure everything in your account is working well for you before Day 1. What you see on your desktop is slightly different on your cell phone — practice navigating on the one you’ll be using.

Customer Service experiences a notable increase in phone call volume on Registration Days and returns phone messages in the order received.

REGISTRATION BEGINS AT 8 am

Your system may need to be refreshed at 8 am if you logged in too early.

YOUR CHILD’S BIRTHDAY & SWIM LESSONS

Children must be the minimum age of the level on or before the first swim lesson of the set to be able to register. Creating a duplicate account to change your child’s birthday will result in immediate removal from the class with freezing of account/s until a birth certificate can be presented verifying the correct date/age of participant.

DATE RANGE FIELDS

Courses appear in order of start date. Because our current season’s programs will still be happening, they appear first. Either scroll down to find the upcoming season’s courses OR use the “Date Range” fields and put the Registration Day 1 date in the first date field. Leave the second date field as the default setting. Each season’s Registration Day 1 can have start dates happening 2 or 3 months later.

If you’re looking up an activity like Preschool Swim Lessons that have more than 50 offerings in a season, you can put in the Lesson Set start date to skip right to Set 2 or Set 3.

CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS

Youth develop important life skills, build confidence, meet new people, and earn certifications to put on their resume. We offer a range of leadership and training opportunities to help youth build confidence, gain valuable life skills and earn specialized certifications needed for employment.

BR1 BRONZE MEDALLION

Develop water rescue skills & judgement while learning lifesaving, first aid and CPR skills.

BR2 BRONZE CROSS

Learn to perform even more complex lifesaving rescues, first aid and CPR skills.

HIGH FIVE®

Plan to work with children? (e.g. camp counselor, sport coach) Learn activities, tips, and resources specific to working with ages 4 to 12.

SWIM FOR LIFE INSTRUCTOR

Learn to teach all ages and abilities to swim so you can have a fun, rewarding, well-paying job.

STANDARD FIRST AID/OFA LEVEL 1

Train for employment or simply to be prepared for life-threatening emergencies. All EFA content plus dealing with more complex medical emergencies.

SWIM LESSONS

If you are 12 to 15 years old and missed your chance to become a stronger swimmer... attend Sunday lessons with Youth your age to work on similar skills and goals. Sunday lessons run October 13 – December 15 from 5:15–6 pm.

YOUTH POOL TAKEOVER

Every last Saturday of the month is Youth Night at the pool.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Focus is on introductory skill development such as skating, shooting, and passing as well as learning the rules and fundamentals of the game.

DANCE – DROP-INS NOT PERMITTED BURLESQUE

No-pressure class uses classic techniques & styling from the wonderful world of burlesque to help you express your inner goddess.

DANCE – DROP-INS WELCOME

Drop-ins are welcome if program capacity permits, popular programs may not have space available.

BEGINNER CLOGGING (55yrs+)

Instructor Sharon Slater leads beginners in this fun dance style with an added touch.

FREE! INTERNATIONAL TRADITIONAL DANCE

A fun & exciting class that explores forms of dance from various cultures. Individuals and pairs welcome.

LATIN DANCE

Time to move those hips! No partner required. We rotate partners during classes.

LINE DANCING (55yrs+)

Choreographed steps done to a specific piece of music. Start out with basic steps and, as dancers progress, more advanced steps are added.

SWING DANCE

It don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got that swing! No partner required. We rotate partners during classes.

Pre-registration opens 72 hours in advance. Single registered drop-ins are not eligible for refunds, transfers or resale.

BADMINTON, VOLLEYBALL

These drop-in sessions are great for players of all abilities and experience levels, everyone is welcome. Options range from social play to intermediate.

PICKLEBALL

Our most popular drop-in sessions prevail—now with staffing support to ensure your experience is top notch.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Recreation & Culture Services is looking for committed volunteers to support the growing demand of our popular drop-in sport programs! Apply today at recreation@squamish.ca

EDUCATIONAL

CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP

Trained volunteers offer practical and emotional support to caregivers. Drop-in to this welcoming space to socialize and for support in a group setting.

FLOWER BOUQUET WORKSHOP

Students will create their own fresh seasonal flower bouquet to take home.

FRENCH CONVERSATION

For people 55yrs+ with experience speaking French and who wish to refresh their ability. This is not a beginner course and the entire class is conducted in French.

GRIEF AND LOSS ART THERAPY

Art Therapy session for those grieving the loss of a loved one or anticipating the loss of a loved one. Sea to Sky Hospice Society program.

O.W.L.S.

NEURO-FIT

Circuit-based exercise aimed to optimize the health of neurological systems. Ideal for individuals affected by stroke, acquired brain injury, MS, Parkinson's or spinal cord injury.

HAND & ARM RECOVERY EXERCISES

Overcoming stroke or other challenges affecting the hands and arms through challenging repetitions, encouraging use of the affected hand in everyday activities.

This Tai Chi-inspired fitness program includes soft and flowing movements designed to enhance balance, coordination and concentration.

DROP - IN PROGRAMS

Self-led drop-in activities are opportunities to visit with other seniors who share your interests and want to contribute knowledge for things like art, cards or sewing.

Drop-in payment and sign-in is required in order to participate.

Please pay in-person at Customer Service.

Drop-in programs do not run on Statutory holidays.

Join us on our 55yrs+ Bus Trips to various destinations in the Lower Mainland. Dates, times, and prices vary by destination. Trips are either “Choose Your Own Adventure” (transportation only) with approx. 3hrs at your leisure in destination, or “Special Package” (inclusive of an admission ticket) to a specific event. Trip dates and destinations are listed on the monthly 55yrs+ Program calendar. See Customer Service desk for a printed list.

BATTERY CURBSIDE RECYCLING

Batteries are hazardous waste, and should never be put in the garbage.

Fortunately, there is a convenient way to recycle your used batteries, keep harmful chemicals out of landfill, and protect the environment.

In addition to the year-round drop-off locations, the District of Squamish is working with Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! to bring battery curbside recycling to your door.

You can have your batteries collected on two occasions this year:

Week of June 3–10, 2024

Week of November 4–8, 2024

To prepare for collection, follow these simple steps:

1. Place acceptable batteries into clear, sealable plastic bags.

2. Place the sealed battery bags on top of your recycling tote on your regular collection day during the dates above.
