TWO

SUGARS We caught up with manager Luke Evans over a brew this week, as he gave us his thoughts on the week ahead...

Welcome all to today’s game between ourselves and 1874 Northwich We are looking forward to being back home this afternoon. Having started the league campaign with so many away games. We have had a difficult start to this seasons campaign, and results have not gone our way. This is for a multitude of reasons from injuries to suspensions whilst also not getting the run of the green at crucial times in games.

Which leaves us on very bare bones. Having said that I still feel that we have more than enough within the squad to compete competitively at this level. Myself and Andy will continue to try to find the right formula to try and turn around result and have us competing at the right end of the table. Sooner rather than later.

I hope that you are all staying safe for what is still a global pandemic. And I hope that we can bring some happiness this afternoon.

On the injury front we have been able to welcome back both Alex Kaye and Jordan Gidley. But Keep the faith. Up the gate. unfortunately we still have long term injuries with Best wishes, Jack Iley, Luke Holden Ryan Riley and Joe Johanson. Josh Westwood will also miss out today Luke due to being on holiday.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

Words by Sam Staunton-Turner A warm welcome to our visitors from 1874 Northwich and also to the Gate supporters! There’s no doubt that we have had a difficult start to the campaign, and we are working hard to put things right on the pitch. I’m not going to make any excuses, as we have not got a single point on the board yet and we know as a group that it’s not good enough but having 3 of our first 4 games away from home is always going to be tough, and the grounds that we have been to, it has been hard to get playing the way that we wanted.

Last Tuesday, away at Charnock was another example of how we have just not had the luck at times. The first half was unacceptable, again we know that we cannot allow performances like that in any game. But the second half was so much better, and when we got that goal back, it gave us that confidence to keep going forward. It was constant attack after attack from us, and we didn’t allow them to get a hold of the ball, we looked a completely different side. We thought we had equalised when Deano placed the ball in the net, for it to be disallowed as the keeper slipped? I’m no referee nor do I claim to be, but we were given no advantage from that at all when it was no fault of ours that the keeper slipped.

We knew after that Congleton game at the start of the season, we needed to see games out as losing that was unacceptable, when we were winning with Anyway, we move on and we concentrate on the next two games which are important for us as we minutes left, to go on and lose is frustrating. really need to start getting some points, and I do Then the game against Padiham we showed signs think we’ll get our slice of luck soon. of quality. But again, we let them into the game When you lose consecutive games, you do start to and we got punished. Jordan did well to step up feel like everything is going against you but some and save the first penalty, and I think to be given another one against us just shows how unfortunate things could have been stopped by us and that’s where we need to start getting things sorted and we have been in these opening games. we need to stop allowing teams to create chances. Away at Barnoldswick, we dominated and we I’m still confident in the lads as group, we know the deservedly went 2-0 up but then they got a goal back and we just couldn’t keep a hold of the game. previous performances have been good but we have been punished for mistakes. They took their chances and we ended up getting punished again. If we could just put away 2 or 3 of Thank you for your continued support. the chances we have then we will be flying and I Enjoy the game! think we will become a very tough team to beat. The gaffer has us set up well, and we know what we are capable of when we get into those attacking positions but it’s being clinical where it counts. Squires Gate Football Club

A-Z OF

GATE B A LOOK BACK OVER SQUIRES GATE’S ALPHABETICAL HISTORY

BLACKPOOL Squires Gate are proud to be a part of the Fylde Coast, and we currently play at the 4th highest level in the area - behind Blackpool, Fleetwood and AFC Fylde. We are a club that loves to be a part of the Blackpool community, and we always welcome new supporters from anywhere on the Fylde Coast. Squires Gate FC are always looking to grow in the community, and have recently also linked up with Lytham CC!

BBC SPOTLIGHT “Are they still going on about playing on the BBC?”...YES! Yes we are! A night that will be remembered by all at the club, when the non league club from Blackpool did the Fylde Coast proud on the tele! A 5-0 win for the blues, and an unbelievable amount of feedback on our social media platforms, it has no doubt helped us grow as a club in terms of supporters.

BRIAN ADDISON It’s no doubt that Squires Gate have their fair share of stalwarts but Brian Addison is now club president. Having been with the club for over 50 years, starting out as a player and is now recognised for all his hard work for the club. Brian has been a vital part of the club in recent years, and has ensured that the pitch is always looking as good as it does on matchdays, and he has even won an award from the FA for groundsman of the year! Brian is without a doubt, priceless to Squires Gate Football Club. We are so grateful for the amount of volunteers we have at this football club, who without, we would not be able to operate on and off matchdays. He even has the stadium named after him! THANK YOU TADDY!! Squires Gate Football Club

AWAY DAYS...

THE BUCKS

THE V

NWCFL PREMIER DIVISION BERRY STREET GARAGE STADIUM

Gate haven’t had much luck on their travels so far this season as they have played three and lost three. It has been a tough start to the campaign for the blues, as we have had three away games out of the opening 5 matches. The Congleton opener was frustrating as we were 2-1 up with minutes remaining on the clock, only to go on to lose the game in injury time. Barnoldswick was more of the same; Gate stormed into a 2 goal lead through Haworth and Ing but a 10 minute turn around from Barnoldswick saw them go on to win the game 3-2. Our most recent away trip saw us travel to one of our local league rivals Charnock Richard, and the game itself had a very fierce feel to it with both teams going for it and some typical derby day challenges. Charnock raced into a 3 goal lead in the first half, and Gate manager Luke Evans admitted it wasn’t acceptable. 14

GATE SATURDAY 24TH OCTOBER KICK OFF: 3PM

Gate played much better in the second half, and would have felt unlucky when Ing had a goal chalked off - despite the goal being perfectly legal - the Charnock keeper slipping and

Ing placed the ball in an empty net but the referee gave the keeper a second free kick.

After being in pole position when the season was deemed null and void last season, 1874 Northwich will no doubt be challenging up at the top end of the table this term too. On their last visit here, just over a year ago, they ran out 4-0 winners. They opened their league campaign with a 3-0 win at Barnoldswick before losing 3-2 against Irlam at the weekend. Over the next few pages, we get an in depth insight into tonight’s opposition...

1874 Northwich 1 Atherton Colls 1

Words by Joseph Gibbons’ blog “Gibbos 92”. Words from Joe Gibbon’s blog “Gibbos’s 92”

Neither side took control of the game as they matched each other like for like throughout. Northwich played very narrow at times whilst Colls tried to exploit the flanks behind the 1874 defence through the pace of Stoker and Mulrooney. Gareth Peet was sitting in at left back which prevented him from joining in the attack on occasions Both teams were applauded as they made their way back to the dressing rooms at half time. It had been another great advert for NWCFL football so far. It was Atherton who took the lead on 53 minutes when Kieran Halliwell scored his second goal in as many matches. The centre half rose well to head the ball into the right hand corner after it had been flicked on at the near post. Halliwell and Cooke steamed off to celebrate with manager Steve Pilling in front of a sombre home crowd. Ian Street then made a triple substitution and played with five up front. It was make or break for 1874, they knew they had to get something from the match. Sakeel Abdullah, Daley Woods and Matty Wood all came on, while Brad Cooke who had been booked made way for Josh Peet. Charlie Stoker came close to doubling the lead when he beat the offside trap. One on one with Conkie, the Northwich keeper made a key save to keep his side in the match. On 79 minutes Northwich equalised and you could probably say that it was coming. An energetic Woods sprinted down the line and latched on to a through ball. Swanton was unable to close down in time as Woods glided a ball to the back post. When Mike Brandon stormed into the area the ball was always going to go into the back of the net. The league’s top goalscorer headed the ball into Priestley’s goal. The first chance saw the ball glance off the post from close range and out for a corner, before Abdullah looked to have sealed a dramatic last minute win. He received the ball in the centre of the goal before firing a ferocious effort which looked to be going in. Priestley pulled off what is arguably the best Colls save this season to keep the score at 1-1. The referee unfortunately called time on what had been a thrilling encounter. Colls played with pride and that is all we ask for. It was the first time that Northwich have dropped points at home since the beginning of October when Irlam held them to a 0-0 draw.

What encouraged you to play football as a kid? Did you always want to be a footballer? My Dad had a ball at my feet, from the first day I could walk. Then he would take the ball away from me if I wasn’t using both feet to practice. What sort of player are you? What do you feel you bring to the 1874 team?

Direct & Unpredictable, with both feet I can go either side of the full back. If you were to have a 5 a side team with current 1874 players, and you were the manager. Who would you pick? Big T, Mark Jones, Jake Parker, Sam Hare & Lucas Weir. If you were to play alongside anyone in the world, who would it be and why? Lionel Messi, because he would make me look tall and always find the right pass.

Who is the toughest opposition you have ever played? Macclesfield Town FC in the FA Trophy, after scoring the opener we lost 2-1 and Danny Rowe was unplayable that night. Which teams do you hate playing against? Teams with poor pitches, where we can’t play good football and it becomes a scrappy game. What has been your 1874 highlight? Last seasons 2-3 come back against Skelmersdale United FC, 0-2 down at half time. In the 2nd half I played my best game in an 1874 shirt since joining and we got the winner in 94th minute. Fans, Management & players all went crazy. Who is your footballing idol? Cristiano Ronaldo, the dedication & commitment he has shown to maintaining an unbelievable physique and goal scoring record, is admirable. 1874 should have won the league last year had it not been null and void. Has that affected the morale of the squad or fired you up for this season?

As devastating as the decision was to null and void the season, we have come back this year to finish what we started. With even more of a drive to earn promotion. Prediction for the game? The Game will finish (1- 3) with a goal from Jake Parker, Myself & Matt Woolley.

VIEW FROM THE AWAY END: CRAIG SPENCER What got you into football as a kid, and more importantly why did you start supporting 1874? My parents took me to play for Grappenhall Rovers under 11s I was hooked from that point on. In adulthood I’ve played and managed an amateur team called Real Atmos. A good friend of mine is Richard Stockton whose dad was instrumental in forming 1874 and he is really great at organising our group of friends via a watsapp group. We’ve been away to Thatcham and Leighton Buzzard as part of an FA Vase run, we find the biggest car and our friend Mark Staley takes driving duties. The Macron cup final when we beat the city of Liverpool 1-0 was a fantastic memory, Aaron Smith got the winner and then we had a bit of an all dayer in Altrincham. Richard got us started but we now even go to games without him lol – last season Andrew Davies, his son and I went to Padiham away. We watched the game get rained off in the 90th minute when we were 3-0 up!!! On other occasions, especially on the away trips we’ll go for a restaurant meal and sometimes even go to the casino after. So supporting 18784 has become a fantastic, social thing that keeps our group of friends connected and meeting up.

How do you feel about the recent departure of leading club goalscorer Scott McGowan? Has anyone come in to fill his boots? To lose someone like Scott is a big hit. He was a leader and had a presence on the pitch that I’m sure helped the rest of the team. He spoke to the other team at corners. A leader needs to step up now. They seem to be going for a two up front partnership of Aaron Smith and Jake Parker and whilst that might lack the raw potency of Scott it actually has a little more creativity and nuance to it, I think it will work really well given a little time. 7.

If you were to have a 5 a side team with 3 1874 players, and 2 PL legends. Who would you have? Duncan Ferguson up front, Neville Southall in goal, Taylor Kennerly left wing, Sammy Hind right wing, Matt Wooley in the middle and captain. No one is beating that beast of a team!

Prediction for the game? Squires Gate 1 – 1874 2 – last minute winner from a well worked move followed by a goal mouth scramble

Which NWCFL grounds do you enjoy visiting the most? Have you been to Squires Gate before? Padiham was a memorable experience – narrow street parking, an exposed, elevated pitch that’s on a slope and - when we were there - torrential rain. Days like that become memorable though, and they had a good crowd themselves and a nice community feel as well.

I haven’t been to Squire Gate but I lived in Blackpool for 5 years for work from 2001 and 2006, I lived in South Shore at Ivy Avenue and I would have driven past the What are the expectations for the season? ground on my daily commute - so I can’t believe I never That’s a hard one. HAVE YOU GOT SOME SPARE CHANGE?

WHAT IS DIPG?

Local football club Poulton FC’s under 13s football team are attempting an Ironman to raise funds for Olivia, who unfortunately has had the horrendous news of having a tumour in her brain which means her life is going to be cut far too short .

‘Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas’. DIPG is a type of brain tumor located at the base of the brain and highly aggressive in nature. Glial tissue present in the brain for providing protection and support to overall brain structure. DIPG tumor develops in the Glial tissues and infiltrates brainstem.

Family and friends are trying to ensure she is able to celebrate life and create memories in the months she has left. For those that don’t know an Iron Man is made up of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile ride and a marathon. They are aiming to raise £1000 towards the cause. Squires Gate’s manager Luke Evans’ son and his team will be walking around the ground tonight so if you can spare any change, it would be appreciated!

The brainstem is the terminal end of the brain and controls several vital physiological functioning, which includes heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. The club sends it’s best wishes to Olivia and her family, and we hope we can help raise some money towards helping Olivia make some memories!

AYAMONTE

Estadio Ciudad de Ayamonte Words from Estadios De Espana blog. Tucked away in the South-west corner of Spain, slap-bang on the Portuguese border, the city of Ayamonte is often by-passed by tourists as they head one way or the other across the Rio Guadiana. However, they are missing a trick as Ayamonte has none of the edginess that one can find in a border town, whilst the influence of its Iberian neighbour can be seen and heard throughout the narrow streets of the old town. And whilst tourists are hardly going to flock to see the local football team, the relatively new municipal stadium is quite a looker. Estadio Ciudad de Ayamonte – Grand Name, Grand Stadium Ayamonte’s footballing history is hardly stellar. In fact, the city’s principal team Ayamonte Club de Fútbol never played above the Tercera, and whilst it can trace its roots back to 1924, it did not join the local federation until 1951. Home until 2003 was the Estadio Municipal which was situated to the east of the city on the Avenida de Cayetano Feu.

The move to the new stadium did inject some momentum into the club’s performances, and after a couple of seasons of steady improvement, the playoffs were made for a second time at the end of the 2009-10 season. CA Cibonero from Navarra was beaten 6-4 on aggregate before UD Alzira put pay to their promotion hopes with a 1-0 aggregate victory. That was as good as it got for Ayamonte CF. Relegation was avoided by just one place in three successive seasons, before the club withdrew from the Tercera Grupo X in December 2013. Re-grouped or reformed, Ayamonte CF currently plays in the Primera Andaluza. The players & Ayamonte CF have been put into the shade by the new stadium

The Estadio Ciudad de Ayamonte is a 15-minute walk south of the town centre. Just before you arrive at the stadium, you pass the aforementioned Estadio Blas Infante, which considering that the city has a population of just 20,000 is mightily impressive. The football stadium is just across the road and has a very solid look about it. No cladding here, thank you very much, just brick-work and steel. It opened on 19 March 2007 with This square enclosure featured three narrow strips of a league match against Algeciras. 1993/94 COLOURS

In a brand new feature, we will be taking a look at some kits from the past. In True Colours, you can relive some of the best and worst strips from every Premier League campaign. Our contributors for this feature are - Russell Cox (@RussWWFC), AET Shirts (@AETShirts), and The Shirt Union (@TheShirtUnion) We asked them to pick 2 of their favourite kits, and 2 of their least favourite kits. Read more about which kits they chose.

RUSSELL COX (@RussWWFC): The 1993/94 season saw a much fresher look than the previous season and almost all of the shirts were pretty likeable. Manchester City might not have been the giants that they are nowadays but they had three great kits made by Umbro and sponsored by iconic brand Brother. The white third kit was made famous by Oasis. It wasn't the greatest of seasons for the Citizens with them finishing in a lowly 16th, though this was not as bad as the decline that would follow. Despite great players such as Tony Coton, Keith Curle, Niall Quinn, Steve Lomas and Uwe Rosler they also went out of the FA Cup to third-tier side Cardiff City. It was only a good run at the end of the season that saw them lose just once in their last ten games that saw them not looking over their shoulder. Across the city, Manchester United were sweeping all before them, winning the Premiership, FA Cup & Charity Shield as well as reaching the League Cup Final. They had an iconic green and yellow third choice kit which harked back to their beginnings as Newton Heath FC. New kids on the block Pony didn't live up to their cockney rhyming slang, producing some decent shirts for Southampton & West Ham. It was also the era of wacky goalkeeper kits and Tottenham Hotspur had some decent efforts. It's hard to find kits to dislike, but Norwich had a fairly uninspiring set of shirts, including the infamous 'bird poo' one. They dropped down to 12th in the league, but had a memorable season in the UEFA Cup, beating Bayern Munich before losing to AC Milan. Despite having a brilliant sponsor in Commodore Amiga, the Chelsea third kit hasn't dated especially well but like I said, bad kits are hard to find this season.

THE SHIRT UNION If we found selecting the best and worst kits hard for 1992/93, then we found the selections for the following season even harder. This was back in an era where kits lasted for 2, 3, 4, maybe even 5 seasons, just before the start of 2-yearly kit cycles.

Coventry City and Norwich City, announcing their arrival in a striking manner.

The Canaries had exceeded everyone’s expectations in the 1992/93 season, finishing 3rd place and landing them a spot in European competition. They found themselves pitted against Europe’s elite which included a star-studded So, before shirt commercialism rides in on the back Bayern Munich who they beat 2-1 in Munich thanks of the Premier League coattails, we’re trying to to a wonderful Jeremy Goss volley. analyse kits that have already featured in 92/93 This game had helped immortalise the funky green (and earlier) and others that feature into 94/95 and and yellow pattern that Ribero had beyond to pick out our best and worst. championed. But the Ribero revolution was short lived, and the company were in financial trouble On top of that, 1993/94 was another strong season come January 1994, leaving Mitre to adorn the for kits, therefore this took a while to draw our manufacturer logo on the same shirt. conclusions. We’ll start with the kits that we didn’t really care too much for. Football shirts of the 93/94 season were blessed with some truly unique patterns, colour ways, sponsors and designs, but Swindon Town didn’t have any of them. Okay, their home shirt had slight sublimated pattern, but it was fairly non-existent and the details, besides a tiny white trim on the cuffs, were missing on what was simply a plain red shirt. It truly was a season to forget for the newly promoted side as they finished rock bottom of the Premier League It is perhaps a bit harsh to include the Sheffield Wednesday away kit in this category. Firstly, it’s a pinstripe kit, which is a big tick in our book, and then there is the sublimated ‘Puma King’ logos running throughout the body of the shirt. The colours are black and yellow, not unusual in football and work well, but where the shirt falls is the Sanderson sponsor. Iconic with Wednesday in the 90’s, the red logo really compliments the home’s blue and white stripes, but here it simply looked like an unwelcome guest at a family BBQ. Awkward. Another newly promoted team to the Premier League was Newcastle United. They’d romped Division One the previous season and they set the league alight again this year finishing 3rd with top goalscorer Andy Cole netting 34 times. But the real headline grabber for us was that home kit. The famous blue star featuring the Tyne Bridge sat proudly on the player’s shirt, and yet without any words, everyone knew it was Newcastle Brown Ale. The sponsor really made this kit, but it also helps that the Magpies had a very successful debut season. In 1992 Ribero had swooped in and taken the shirt contracts from the popular Asics brand for

THE BEST FOOTBALL

BOOKS @footybookreviews talks about some of the must read football books From Triumph to Tragedy – The Chapecoense Story by Steven Bell In this era of over-hyped, sensationalist media coverage, the words, ‘disaster’ or ‘tragedy’ are banded about in football like confetti, usually following a defeat for any Premier League club you’d care to mention. The reality is that down the years in the game there have been events that are genuine tragedies. These have included the loss of Italian side Torino’s squad in 1949, the deaths of many of Manchester United’s ‘Busby Babes’ in 1958, that of Peruvian club Alianza Lima in 1987 and the Zambia national team in 1993. FOOTBALL IN: LUXEMBOURG At Squires Gate, we try to get an insight into football in different countries. So far, we have spoke to football fans from Russia, Serbia and France. We can now add Luxembourg to that list! Over the course of the season, @LuxembourgFooty have agreed to give our supporters an insight into what they can expect from a football match in Luxembourg. From the matchday programmes to the usual match day food (I’m guessing they don’t have a pie and chips like we do here in England!) Welcome to all the Squires Gate supporters, football enthusiasts, and all the other readers of this programme.

ENJOYED THIS ARTICLE? If you enjoyed reading this, be sure to check out @LuxembourgFooty on Twitter for all the latest updates. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be finding out more about the lower leagues, a usual match day experience, what are the best teams in Luxembourg and the best stadiums.

I’m a freelance writer currently writing about football in Luxembourg – that’s the name of my Twitter account too if you want to have a look at it. Before writing about the topic, I decided to write an introduction piece that consists of all my sidenotes and stuff other than the topic. At first, I have to say a big thank you to all the lads running the matchday programmes and the Twitter account – I appreciate it really, and will try to reach my goal of helping people to know, and persuade them to love Luxembourgish football. That’s a hard task, I know. But for me, it’s the perfect one, and I’m sure there are some of you too who find smaller countries’ leagues more exciting and interesting. Maybe there is something about the country (think of Icelandic and Faroean stadiums with their magnificent views), or the culture (I have many examples, my two favourites being Switzerland and, of course, Luxembourg), or the teams (in the Georgian and Moldovan first tiers literally every club is on a very similar level bar Sheriff) which makes the league fascinating to watch. And if I say Luxembourg has all of the above, I’m not far from the truth. Do you want to know why? Then I recommend reading my pieces, starting off next week! UP THE GATE!

Leicester 1-4 Liverpool

Arsenal 2-0 Bolton

Liverpool supporters devotedly raised a banner proclaiming "Gérard Houllier: Vous Ne Marcherez Jamais Seul" and then lauded Robbie Fowler, the player who has caused Houllier most frustration, for a hat-trick that might put his season, perhaps even his career, back on track.

Arsenal overcame a managerless Bolton to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2007/08 season.

Houllier was moved out of intensive care hours before the game, slightly less than a week after major heart surgery, and, when the news filtered through to him that Fowler, of all people, had triumphed at a time of adversity, it will have given him much to ponder upon.

Bolton started the match second from bottom in the Premier League with Archie Knox at the helm in temporary charge.

Fowler fired home after 4 minutes, before Hyypia doubled the scoring after heading home McAllister’s free kick.

It took 68 minutes for the gunners to finally get the goal they deserved, when Kolo Toure fired home from a free kick.

Robbie Fowler was there again to put the reds 3 goals to the good before the break.

10 minutes from time, they made it 2-0. Walcott causing problems on the wing, which presented Rosciky with the chance to convert.

He completed his hat trick in injury time with a right footed volley.
