FROM THE DUGOUT
DANIEL PENSWICK “COMPETITION IS HIGH, WITH ALL THE LADS PUSHING TO BE IN THE STARTING 11…” Today we welcome 1874 Northwich to the Royal British Legion Stadium as we raise the curtain on a new league season. It’s the perfect way to start at home, against one of the title favourites. I’d like to welcome the 1874 staff, players and fans and hope you enjoy the game.
“It’s the perfect way to start, at home, against one of the title favourites” 1874 have strengthened considerably since last season and have yet to register anything other than a win in their two games so far. Always a physically strong and combative team, they’ve added considerable quality to their forward line as they look to pose a challenge for the league title. We’ll have to be at our best to stop their attacking threats and imprint our style of play on the game.
“they’ve added quality to their forward line as they look to pose a challenge for the title”
With a fully fit and available squad to choose from, competition for places is high and with the lads all pushing to be a part of the starting 11. Last week’s victory against NECFL side Maltby Main in the FA Cup, will give us confidence as we look to cement a more attacking style of play. We finished last season as the lowest scorers in the league and I’m looking for an improvement at the top end of the pitch.
“We look to cement a more attacking style of play”
The new signings have slotted into the group well and all offer us something different, especially with Ric Seear scoring a hat trick away at Garstang, shows what he is capable of when he gets Let’s hope we can score some goals, play the game in the right way and end up on the right side results wise of a cracking NWCFL match. Up the Gate.

Just two players lined up in both ties for Gate with Ben Fletcher and Joe Noblet playing in both. The latter scored a hatrick that day and got the decisive goal this time, though Gate had plenty of chances to win the game before then.
Both teams started the game with a decent tempo and desire, both looking keen to win the game from the start. Neither team really had a chance to speak of in the first 10 minutes with both looking evenly matched.
Fellow striker Ric Seear then had a great chance to head Gate into the lead after 21 minutes. He leapt highest at the back post from a Noblet corner but the defender did well to recover and clear the ball. Gate again showed good attacking intent on 35 minutes when Brett Dawson showed a different side to his game. The striker played a super 30-yard pass from his own half to find Ryan Riley but the striker was hounded by a defender with the ball being put out for a corner, which came to nothing. Arguably the turning point of the game came eight minutes from half time. Maltby Main’s centre back shown a straight red card for an unprovoked head butt on Gate striker Ric Seear. Maltby Main did well to regroup over half time and looked defensively solid in the second half. The impressive Brett Dawson could have scored a superb goal early into the second half. He picked the ball up in his own half before driving forward beating several men but the Maltby Main defender did well to Sheppard the ball out. The break through for Gate came after 65 minutes. Joe Noblet found in space in the box was fouled by the defender as he set to shoot. It was Noblet who stepped up to the spot to convert the penalty on the same ground he did three years ago. Gate then went on to control the game from there on and didn’t really get tested by the home side. Chances from Noblet and Dawson late on into the half kept the home side on their toes as Gate showed great resilience to keep going. Ben Fletcher in net for Gate not really being tested with the pairing of Penswick and Carroll at the back winning everything that came their way. The win sends Gate through to the next round though they’ll have to wait till Wednesday night to find out who they’ll face next. West Didsbury and AFC Liverpool drawing on Saturday so will play again on Wednesday night.
PRE SEASON REVIEW
SQUIRES GATE 1 FLEETWOOD TOWN DEV 0 TUESDAY 19TH JULY - 19:30 - HT: 0-0 It was a very even start to the first half with both side looking possession hungry throughout the half. The game was played under searing heat and it clearly showed on the pitch, both clubs taking regular drinks breaks.Gate could have been ahead on 25 minutes when Alex Mckendrick broke into the box and fired towards goal but Matt Urwin saved well down low. Gate dealt well with the threat of Fleetwoods two wingers who were restricted to half chances. Gate ended the first half the better and and had a shot cleared off the line just as the half time whistle rang. The second half saw plenty of changes for both sides with the half becoming very stop/start. New signing Mark Thornber had a great chance to open the scoring on 55 minutes when he unleashed a stinger of a shot from outside the box, but Urwin again did well to deny Gate. Fleetwood then had a great chance after one of their younger wingers went on a mazy run, but was stopped in the six yard box by a superb Alex Colquhoun tackle. Perhaps the best chance for either team came from Ryan Riley for Squires Gate. The second half sub firing over the bar from in the six yard box with all the goal in front of him. The turning point came 10 minutes from time when Mark Buchan was fouled in the box. The Scot dusted himself down and fired past Urwin to give Gate the lead. And that's how the game would end, though a last ditch block from Carroll down the other end with 5 minutes left guaranteed Gate a clean sheet.
SQUIRES GATE 2 ALVECHURCH 2 SATURDAY 23RD JULY - 15:00 - HT: 1-1 The game didn't start the best for Gate with the visitors going behind after 15 minutes. Gate hit on the break found themselves two on three in defence with the ball being played out to the left winger who set himself and curled the ball into the top right corner. The set back didn't put Gate off who were urged to keep playing from the sideline and almost went level not long after going behind. Ben Fishwick found himself in space at the edge of the area to fire a great strike on goal but the visiting keeper did well to parry the ball away from goal. That ball was picked up by Ric Seear who burst forward towards goal but his shot could only hit the side netting. Ben Fletcher was called into action down the other end to keep Gate in the game. He got well behind a fierce shot on goal before Alvechruch fired over the bar from the rebound. They then missed a 1 on 1 with Gate after beating Gates offside trap but fired wide after good pressure from Fletcher. Unfortunately Gate couldn't hold on though and a minute before the full time whistle the visitors would equalise. The ball cut back to the penalty spot Andy Nichol fired past Fletcher to equalise for Alvechurch late on.
SQUIRES GATE 3 BAMBER BRIDGE 4 TUESDAY 26TH JULY - 19:30 - HT: 1-1 Bamber Bridge started the game with plenty of possession, mainly through former Blackpool, Fleetwood and AFC Fylde midfielder Jamie Milligan who was control the game from deep midfield. But it was Gate who had the first chance of the game Ric Seear doing well to pick up a scuffed clearence from the keeper but his shot was wide. Bamber Bridge would take the lead after 24 minutes. Stuart Vasey volleying in at the back post to beat Fletcher and take the lead. Disappointing from Gates point of view who had the better chances.Gate would equalise nine minutes later. Mark Thornber playing through Ric Seear who lobbed the on rushing keeper to score. Before half time Gate could have scored twice more. First fullback Richards was sent through but his low shot was saved before Ryan Tanser shot over with Ric Seear waiting in the middle. The second half started perfectly for Gate who took the lead just five minutes in. Ryan Tansers run found through the middle of his defence and his shot which came off the keeper rolled in to give Gate the lead. Just eight minutes later Gate would be made to pay after a poor goal kick found a Bamber Bridge player. He crossed for Evans to head last Fletcher and equalise. Bamber Bridge would then take the lead after Gate got caught playing short from the corner. Stayte was tackled and Brig hit Gate on the counter for Evans to score his second of the game. But back Gate came to show great resilience to equalise again. Anthony Stayte beating the calls for offside before smashing the ball past the keeper into the far corner to equalise. The crowd certainly got value for money as just five minutes later Bamber Bridge would take the lead again. The substitute coming on and firing into the top corner with his first touch of the ball to give the visitors the lead.
SQUIRES GATE 4 CROOK TOWN 2 TUESDAY 26TH JULY - 19:30 - HT: 3-0 Gate made the best start possible to the game and could have taken the lead after just three minutes. New signing Brett Dawson doing well down the left hand side found the run of Ric Seear but he was closed down well by the Crook Town defender. The two forwards would combine again three minutes later, gates quick start almost ended in another goal on ten minutes. Ric Seear intercepting a back pass but the keeper did well to turn him out of the box. Seear did well to turn on the edge of the box after getting away from the keeper but his chip was too hard and went overt the bar.Gate doubled their lead after nineteen minutes this time it was Seear who provided for Dawson. Mike Hall won the initial header in midfield to find the feet of Seear, he flicked the ball past his man with his first touch then found the run of Dawson on the right hand side. The second half was much slower for Gate who struggled to get into the game as much with Crook looking to improve from the first half. First the visitors had a chance from a corner but Fletcher came out to catch. Crook Town would grab two goals in ten minutes after Gate introduced five subs. First a free kick from around 25 yards out was slotted into the side netting out of the reach of Ben Fletcher to grab a goal back. Then eight minutes later Towns right-winger beat first Ben Seear then Danny Penswick to cross to his striker in the middle who finished well It wouldn’t be long before the two would link up again, in fact just three minutes later they linked up
WE’VE MET BEFORE? 1874 NORTWICH 2 SQUIRES GATE 0 SATURDAY 8TH AUGUST 2015 - 15:00 - HT: 2-0 Gate handed a debut to new signing Wes Benjamin at centre back with fellow new signings. It was the home side who made the brighter start to the game looking fitter and more willing to get to the ball first. Squires Gate seemed to struggle with the ball and didn't utilise it when in possession. A lot of Gates passes were wayward and off target in the first half. It was the home side who had first real chance of the game, new signing Aiden Haughton fired towards goal but Ben Fletcher got over well to save. On 17 minutes Gate had their first attack, Josh Kay jinking past two before a last ditch tackle denied him a shot on goal.
The home side opened the scoring after 35 minutes when defender Danny Thomas rose highest to head home from the corner. Gate seemed to struggle to really get going throughout the first half and seemed lazy in there passes and pressing on the ball. The home side made this even clearer on 41 minutes when Haughton scored to put them2-0 up. The second half saw a more recognisable Gate side, full of enthusiasm and bite all looking motivated and all wanting to win the ball and play football. Gate first chance of the second half came on 54 minutes, Buchan beating the offside trap but his shot dribbled the wrong side of the post. The lively Josh Kay again burst forward from midfield for Gate but after beating 3 players his shot was easily saved.
Gate’s best chance of the game came when Mark Buchan lay the ball of to Billy McKenna on the edge of the box but his shot was fired over the box. The home side could have made it three late on in the game but sub Mike Brandon miss kicked the square ball much to the surprise of the home crowd. Gate pushed late on but chances from Subs Cummings whose chip fell wide of the post and Trout whose clever backwards header fell straight into the
SQUIRES GATE 2 1874 NORTHWICH 1 S As expected the game started very full blooded with 1874 coming out the blocks early on full assault. Though the first notable chance fell to Gate on 10 minutes. A Freekick fired into Josh Westwood at the back post but he headed the ball up rather than at the goal. The real controversy of the first half came in the 25 minute. Greg Hall the 1874 keeper appearing to handle the ball outside his box only to be punished with a yellow card. Mark Buchan stepped up to strike the resulting Freekick but that was cleared to Stayte who's shot was put out for a corner. 1874 showed how dangerous they can be when Woolley, Beadle and Brandon linked up, up top but Woods was well behind Brandon's shot. Josh Woods again did well from the resulting corner when he saved Brandon's shot and saw Mitchell's shot cannon over the bar. Billy McKenna could have opened the scoring after good pressing from Gate but his was over the bar. After the break Alex Mckendrick had a great chance running in late at the back post. By the just missed Mckennas cross after good work between him and Tanser. Rather harshly on Gate, 1874 took the lead after 52 minutes. Gate had done so well up until that point but Matthew Beadle found space in between Trout and Westwood to fire low between Josh Woods legs. The goal seemed to take the momentum away from Gate who were more than matching the visitors. Just as Gate looked like they were struggling the equalised! Billy McKenna running into the space down the right wing before crossing the ball into the box to find Buchan waiting who drilled the ball into the bottom corner. With 71 minutes gone Northwich looked to push for the win but a header over the bar by Farnworth summed up their missed opportunities. . Billy Mckennna who had drifted inside from the wing threaded the ball through the middle of Northwichs defence to find the run of Tanser. This time he didn't panic and slotted the ball to the left of Greg Hall in net for 1874 to win the game for Squires Gate. There was late drama in the game as 1874 Northwich player Matt Woolley saw red for an elbow on Stayte.
VIEW FROM THE AWAY END We spoke to Callum Waters, Tim Baker and Mark Riding and asked them to give their opinions on the upcoming campaign. What are your expectations for this season? How can you improve on last season? CW: On the pitch; to mount a serious title challenge, and a good cup run would also be nice! Getting into the later stages of the FA Vase would promote the club further around the mid Cheshire area! Off the pitch; to continue to grow links with the community and local businesses in Northwich and surrounding areas. Improvements: tighten the defence, we conceded too many goals last campaign. TB: I always think top 4 is a must, but after watching our first two games, I’ve grown confidence that we can win it this year. Our comeback against Congleton on Tuesday has shown we have improved on what we needed to last year - to score goals in difficult games. Our signings; Hind, Bailey and McGowen have filled the gaps left by Brandon and Beadles departures last year. MR: I hope we win the league, but I expect an improvement on last years 4th. We’ve lost our two biggest goal threats in Mark Brandon (retired), and Matty Beadle (to Colne) but in Hind, McGowan and Bailey we’ve recruited 3 strikers who are all capable of finishing top 10 in the league goalscorers chart!
Which teams are you looking forward to facing? Any grounds you enjoy visiting? CW: When the fixtures first came out, I looked straight for the games against Runcorn Linnetts, AFC Liverpool and Barnton so I'd have to say I'm most looking forward to facing them! Linnetts and ourselves have previously had hard fought games and large crowds, Barnton is another local derby for us and several old faces in their line up. AFC Liverpool have a strong side this year and will be contenders to win the title, so should also be a good game! Looking forward to visiting WD&C again, would also like to go to Atherton Colls for the first time. TB: I live in Stafford as I’m in the army, so the grounds in that area really. I went to Congleton and Hanley is close. Being a Cheshire lad too I’m looking forward to playing Barnton away and going there. The derbies against Linnets are always a treat too and we would need to get a result against Collieries. MR: I always look forward to our trips to Atherton Colls, especially as I’m expecting them to be challenging for the league again this year. I’m pretty disappointed AFC Blackpool were relegated, as we only have one Shovels visit this year! Here’s hoping for an away cup draw either here or at AFCB!
Any players that Squires Gate fans should watch out for today? Who could cause the most threat to our defence? CW: Tom Bailey is the obvious choice with his goal scoring threat, but I think Mark Jones is the biggest threat, he has a great e ye for a pass and seen him unlock several defences in pre season. Sam Hind is also a tricky striker to defend against. TB: Sam Hind scored a hatrick on Tuesday, “He’s got the hair but we don’t care” and Tom Bailey up front are a handful. McGowan can score goals too so we are spoilt for choice up front. MR: Sam Hind - Ex Abbey Hey and Glossop joined us this summer. He’s linked up very well with Tom Bailey and Scott McGowan so far and provides as many chances as he scores himself. He scored the first three mid week to bring us back from 2-0 down to win 4-2 at Congleton.
How have you got on during your preseason? Any players impressed you so far? CW: A very impressive pre season with a lot of goals scored, although nobody can read too far into it. Stu Wellstead continued his good form from last year into pre season which is good to see, and Matt Russell at left back had a good pre season and filled a gap where I thought we have been weak in previous seasons. TB: We were unbeaten in preseason which is promising. There’s something special coming together with the lads, you can see that their belief in themselves has grown. What’s always impressed me is how much the team and management has bought into the club as much as the fans. Everyone moving forward together, its great to be a part of. MR: Beyond Sam above, I’ve been impressed with Matt Russell and Eddie Moran. Matt is left full back, with Eddie infront of him on the wing. They’ve both come in from Glossop which has helped as you can see they already have the understanding of each others positioning. Expect to see Matt bombing down the wing today!
What has been the most memorable moment during your time watching 1874? CW: A no brainier, beating Witton Albion at their place in the mid Cheshire cup. Our first piece of silverware and winning agains t your arch rivals is always nice-not bad for a "dog and duck" team!
TB: Probably me and my daughter Tarryn walking out with the team for our first competitive game! Never had that kind of emotion in a football match then that day. I was on exercise during our mid Cheshire cup win against Witton last year so was glued to my phone for updates.
What was the best game that you watched last season? CW: Most entertaining game was probably away at Congleton and a 4-all draw. Scott McGowan (who now plays for us) scoring a hattrick for Congleton, and after looking down and out, coming back from behind to draw in injury time was pretty special! TB: It has to be the Witton game, even though I could only catch the highlights. You knew it was only a matter of time before the hard work our amazing board team and volunteers paid off and that night it did in a big way, we blew out our biggest rivals to bits in their own back yard! I was at the AFC Liverpool game the Saturday before and the buzz around the place was electric and the game itself you could see the lads wanted to impress to secure their place in the final. MR: There’s two standouts. The best has to be winning our first real bit of silverware away at Witton Albion. We beat them 3-0 on their own turf to lift the Mid Cheshire Senior Cup. In the league, it would have to be Congleton again (they’ll be sick of us before long). After a dire first 60 minutes, we found ourselves 4-1 down. A goal from Matty Beadle rattled Congleton and we pulled it back to 4-4! We really could have won that game too which is incredible given how the game went.
If you could sign 3 PL players on a free transfer, who would they be and why? CW: Premier League, what's that? Wouldn't have any players without passion playing for us, they wouldn't fit into the squad. Would quite like Ashley Williams, Kante and Fellani though, we love a long ball! TB: It doesn’t really matter because they’d only make the bench anyway! MR: N’Golo Kante - His work rate is incredible and his ability to time a tackle is above anyone else out there. Every team needs a player like him in the middle. Sergio Aguero - Not sure I need to justify this one, just in case - GOALS! David De Gea - He’s the top keeper in the world for me right now, and the difference that a keeper like that can make to his team is more that a world class striker.
If you were manager of a 5 a side team, and had to pick 2 1874 players and 3 PL legends. Who would you pick? CW: That's a tricky one! The two 1874 players I would pick would be Paul Connor and Neil Chappell as they both never stop running! Premier League legends would probably have to be Alan Shearer, Henry and Lampard, with a sweep keeper system! TB: Gregg Hall in goal. Chappell midfield, he has to be involved. My 3 PL legends would be Cantona, Giggs and Scholes. MR: Sanchez, De Gea, Payet, Chappell and Mitchell. I always think 5 a side is won by a good shot stopper and trickery on the ball, so my three Premier League players would play to that. My ‘74 players would be a blood and guts tough tackler in Chappell and a no nonsense centre back in Mitchell.
Have you ever been to Squires Gate before, if so what was the score?

It is probably something of a misnomer to describe the next few paragraphs as a history of our football club. After all, by its very definition, the word ‘history’ suggests that 1874 Northwich have a proud and glorious past that stretches over many years and its supporters can look back over past campaigns – good and bad – with a great deal of pride, nostalgia and fondness. But actually, nothing can be further from the truth! You see, 1874 has only been in existence since the night of Thursday 15th November 2012 when disillusioned members of the then Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust voted overwhelmingly to form a new fans-run and democratically operated club. For those who backed the move it was a heart-breaking decision as they had followed ‘The Vics’ loyally for many years, worked selflessly for the club and had shared in all its highs and lows. But numerous off the field sagas and financial controversies – which culminated in the loss of the hugely impressive Victoria Stadium – eventually lead the majority to decide that they could no longer identify themselves with the club that they had once loved and that something radical had to be done. There was an overwhelming desire to bring the game of football back as the central focus, to re-build links with the people and businesses of Northwich and to put control of this new club into the hands of those people who ultimately would have its best interests at heart – the fans. In keeping with its democratic structure, the name of the new club was decided upon by the members and is a conscious reference to the once proud heritage of the club that followers of 1874 used to follow. In a similar way, the club crest and colours are both a nod to the past but they are also sufficiently different to make it clear to all that 1874 is something different, something new.

OPPOSITION WATCH Media man Mark Ashmore gives us a quick analysis on the players he thinks will be a danger to Gate for today’s game. He picks out a player from every position that he thinks will be a danger to Gate. One of which was involved in Glossop North End’s promotion campaign back in 2015. One of his other key men has also had experience in this league with Maine Road and has the ability to be on top of any striker on his day.
PAUL CONNOR Key to how 1874 Northwich played last season. Connor offers support from full back and possesses a mean cross. With experience in this league with Maine Road, Connor will be a key voice in the back line. Also comes across as very nice guy off the pitch.
EDDIE MORAN
TOM BAILEY
A new signing coming in from Glossop North End, Moran was a key part of Glossop’s promotion campaign from this league.
Another experienced head and again another Glossop League Winner. Simply put, Bailey will score you goals at this level and will be in and around the top goal scorers chart coming April.
Middle or to the left hand side Moran offers good experience A partnership with fellow former at this level that could make Glossop man Sam Hind could be lethal the difference.
Appointed as 1874’s first ever manager in March 2013, 50 year old Ian has an impressive pedigree. Wigan born and bred, Ian started his career with his home-town club in the mid-eighties and went on to give great service for several Northwest based sides including Chorley, Horwich RMI, Bamber Bridge and Curzon Ashton. Horwich RMI provided the highlight of his career when the un-fancied Lancashire outfit beat Conference high-fliers Weymouth to lift the GMAC Cup in 1988. Since graduating to the side lines, ‘Streety’ has guided a number of clubs including Warrington Town, Atherton LR and Winsford United where he guided the Barton Stadium outfit to victory in the North-West Counties Challenge Cup in 2011. Last season, he led them to a cup victory as well as an impressive 4th placed finish, fans will be hoping that they can build on that this season.

LAST SEASON
ATHERTON COLLIERIES 5 SQUIRES GATE 2 It was a much better start compared to Saturday, with the first chance falling to Gate midfielder Joe Noblet, who was unable to cut inside the Colls defence to get a shot on target. Rowley had a chance to break the deadlock with a quick counter attack from a Colls corner which led to a three on two situation, but the defender got there just in time. The home side started to show their attacking threat and after constant attacks, they started to open up the Gate defence, forcing mistakes from Colquhoun and Trout. It took only 15 minutes until the resilience was broken, when Colls were awarded a corner and the ball was headed in by debutant Callum Jones who was unmarked at the back post. It's something Gate supporters have seen quite a lot this season. Atherton were not allowing the away side anywhere near the ball, with short tidy passes around the midfield, they eventually got the ball to the left wing only to put the ball over the bar. Fletcher showed his quality when he denied Colls a second on the half hour mark. Buchan had a fantastic chance to draw Gate level 5 minutes before the break but was unable to direct his header into the back of the net. Colls striker Mark Battersby was causing problems for the defence as he flicked the ball over Richards' head only to be denied by Fletcher again. Only one goal separated the two teams at half time. There were two goals in the first ten minutes of the restart, the first came when Colls were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, where Mark Truffas doubled the hosts lead from the set piece. Squires Gate found themselves back in the game when Noblet hit an unstoppable free kick into the top corner, out of the keepers reach. Trout came close to scoring Gates equaliser but his header was pushed over by the Colls keeper. Just as the visitors were getting themselves into the game, Atherton added another. A poor headed clearance could only find the feet of a Colls player who calmly slotted the ball away to make it 3-1, and the hosts made it 4-1 less than two minutes later. A cross from the left wing was tapped in from five yards. Ryan Riley headed home a consolation goal for Gate but Hardcastle put the game to bed 5 minutes from time

GROUNDHOP DIARIES
RUSSELL COX
At Squires Gate, we are always intrigued to see what encourages people to visit non league grounds, and travel around the country just to watch a game of football. This week we spoke to the ‘Wycombe Wanderer’ Russell Cox about his adventures. There’s no prize for guessing which team he supports. First of all, what encouraged you to start your footballing adventures? Well originally I was just a Wycombe fan, visiting grounds for our away games. But I’ve always liked visiting grounds when out and about, even for photos on a non match day, or on the way to other games. I went to the occasional non Wycombe game to see some of our ex players. Around 2012 I decided I wanted to complete the 92 by seeing a game at every league ground, a feat that I completed at Sunderland in May 2013.
As for non league hopping, I started out with steps 1-4 in the main. The thing that got me into step 5 and below was the NCEL hop of 2013. I was dead keen to see the Bridlington Town v Scarborough Athletic clash and so decided to go on the hop. I realised there were many more great places to visit and now the NCEL has become my favourite league to visit grounds in, with Pickering Town the one that really got me hooked. What is the best part about non league? The cost factor, the lack of segregation and being able to mingle with opposing fans. Generally much friendlier and more relaxed - unlike the ‘guilty until proven innocent’ attitude that you get generally with league football, with integration discouraged, high costs and too many rules How many grounds have you visited now? 604 as of writing this article Do you have any favourites, and have you visited any obscure grounds? My favourite is Hitchin Town, loads of lovely wooden terraces. I tend to prefer it the further north I go, with Bacup Borough and Marine providing especially warm welcomes this season, and plenty of others having great grounds and fond memories. As for obscure, that is my forte, though I’ve not gone far off the beaten track in terms of a typical non league hopper. What has been the most memorable moment that you have seen for a club? (Cup wins, etc) Mainly with Wycombe, I have seen plenty. I’ve seen the goalkeeper of our bitter rivals score against us in the last minute to hand them the league title on goal difference on the last day of the season. I’ve also seen us reach the FA Cup and League Cup semi finals and on the flip side lose to Basingstoke and Eastwood Town in the FA Cup. The most memorable moments away from Wycombe have involves fisticuffs. Around the turn of the century I saw Bromley relegated at Chesham United, with the second goal they let in resulting in a punch up between two of their defenders over whose fault it was, for which the referee sent them both off. My 500th ground at Atherstone was supposed to be a friendly against Bedworth, but someone didn’t tell the teams that. There were terrible tackles, karate kicks aimed at opponents, a mass brawl, multiple sending offs and a huge row in the stand between opposing directors and fans Have you ever watched any games abroad? If not, what would be the first choices on your list? I’ve seen 4 games in Frankfurt, 3 in Ibiza, and one each in Madrid and Rome. I’m certainly up for Frankfurt again, as well as something more obscure like the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Away from Europe, something in Argentina or Brazil. If you were to pick a "dream XI" of players that you have seen live. Who would you pick? I’ve got an awful memory when it comes to things like this, so I’ll stick with my favourite Wycombe XI which is: Martin Taylor Jason Cousins Terry Evans Terry Howard Clint Easton Dave Carroll Keith Ryan Steve Brown Steve Guppy Nathan Tyson Simon Garner What has been the best goal you have ever seen? From PL to non league? Russell Martin for Wycombe at home to Macclesfield in around 2005 which ended in a memorable 5-4 defeat, a real 30 yard screamerWhat has been the best, and worst game that you watched last season? The worst was the dismal 0-0 draw between Cadbury Heath and Cribbs on the Western League hop in October. The best was Kidsgrove Athletic 7-4 Warrington Town in the NPL Academy League, even though I missed 5 of the goals at the start due to confusion over the kick off time. Is there any grounds that you are looking forward to attending over the next couple of months? The western league hop at the start of October, Truro City in mid September before it is replaced with a new ground and as many FA Cup games as I can as I love the competition. If you would like to read more of Russell’s adventures, then be sure to check out his blog (www.thewycombewanderer.blogspot) or you can follow him on Twitter (@RussWWFC)
PREDICTION CORNER Last season, we run a prediction league for home and away fans that visited Squires Gate. We had over 40 entries throughout, including other fans throughout the country. You get one chance to get as many points as you can predicting scores for games that are picked by the two editors. This season, we have changed the scoring slightly and added a new ‘double points’ section. If you would like to have a go, then send your predictions for the games listed below to haydendan@live.co.uk along with your name and the club you support by 14:50. The score in brackets next to the game is the result from the last time the teams met.
