Saturday 12th January 2019 / The Brian Addison Stadium /NWCFL PREMIER DVIISION/Attendance:156 Squires Gate suffered a second defeat against league leaders City of Liverpool in a reverse fixture of last weekend. Craig Cairns and Karl Clair struck twice before the break for Craig Robinson's side before a second Cairns goal ten minutes into the second half wrapped up the win for away side. Manager Andy Clarkson made one change to his side for this game with Adam Sumner coming into the defence to replace Seydou Bamba who dropped to the bench. New signing Oliver Burgess, who was released by Blackpool at the end of last year, could make his debut from the bench. Gate's first chance of the game came after three minutes. Keeper Morgan Bacon scuffed his clearance straight to the feet of James Boyd, the midfielder looked up and aimed for the empty net, but his shot went just wide. The visitors were more composed than Gate in front of goal and took the lead soon after. Prolific striker Craig Cairns finding it too easy to get in behind Gate's defence and round Ben Fletcher to take the lead. Gate looked to force the equaliser and got in behind Liverpool's defence on 15 minutes. A clever chipped ball through from Ryan Charnley found Ryan Riley but he was flagged offside. A freekick to Liverpool was blocked by Gate's wall before the follow up was fired over as Liverpool started to build the pressure.
That pressure eventually counted when the Purps doubled their lead. Gate were looking for an offside flag but it didn't come as the original shot that hit the post was tapped in by Karl Clair. Gate had probably their best chance of the game straight from kick off looking to get a goal back just before half time. Riccardo Egidi broke through but couldn't keep his composure firing over the bar.
Half time: Squires Gate 0-2 City of Liverpool The visitors added a third goal just after the half time break. A long ball forward found the run of Craig Cairns, the striker was helped as Dave Rossall slipped then his centre back partner Ben Reader slid in trying to win the ball but the striker evaded both and beat Fletcher for the second time in the game. Seear and Egidi looked to link up for Gate on the hour mark on what was a quite day for the striking duo. Seear sent a disguised ball through to find the run of Egidi but his shot was tame and easily gather by the keeper. Andy Clarkson introduced 16 year old Oliver Burgess into the game for the last 20 minutes and the midfielder almost made an instant impact. A low cross from Dan Grauy found Burgess on the edge of the box but his shot was blocked. The blocked ball came out to Adam Sumner but his low drive was wide.

AWAY DUGOUT ROB BYRNE Rob has been with since December 2017, he has lost of experience at this level and higher so abbey hey took the chance on him when it came to it. He has been in the league and done very well with Winsford and lead them to a good season. Rob and his team hasn't been doing well this season as they sit 20th in the table and only have 14 points to there name at half way point and is looking like they could go down if they don’t start picking up some points. They know todays game going be no easy test as even know gate lost last Saturday they have been red hot in recent weeks
HISTORY OF ABBEY HEY Abbey Hey FC was formed in 1902 in the Abbey Hey district of Gorton, some three miles away from the centre of Manchester. During their formative years and through the two World Wars, the club was disbanded and reformed on a number of occasions. Starting in the Church Sunday Leagues, they progressed through the Manchester Amateur Leagues during the intervening years but the club really came into it's own in the 1960s after it took in the players of the Admiralty Gunning Engineering Department (AGED) following it's closure. Alf Gentry, the Manager of Abbey Hey at this point, decided that with the influx of new players he would step down in favour of the AGED Manager, Danny Danson. Alf, who had been for many years the prime mover of the club, stayed on in a senior position and shared in the success that the club would have in the coming years. The new players made up the backbone of the club during the decade with some staying on after their playing careers had ended. Most notable of these was Allan Vaughan, who occupied the positions of Treasurer and Secretary. Ken Brown also stayed on; becoming manager after Danny Danson had retired, and won numerous honours culminating in 1978 with the club deciding to apply for a position in the Manchester League. The application was successful and the following year the club began playing in the 2nd Division of the Manchester League, achieving promotion in their first season. Reaching this position meant that the club had to find an enclosed ground suitable for playing their home games. The nearest ground available at the time was in Chorlton at Werburghs Road. The ground was owned by a car dealership (Lookers) but was being used by a local school. It was agreed that if Abbey Hey FC carried out some improvements, such as installing showers in the dressing rooms, they could rent the ground. After two years, Lookers reneged on the deal and the club was forced out, this time to a ground nearer home at Godfreys (the area was named after a prominent local Councillor, Godfrey Erman, who donated the ground to the local populace of Abbey Hey for their use as a recreational area). The next eighteen years were fairly successful with the club winning the Gilchrist Cup under Managers Jim Whittaker and Dave Denby and a League title but this ended when Abbey Hey FC were told that as from the start of the new season they would not be allowed to use Godfreys. This despite the large amounts of money that they had spent on drainage and despite assurances when they had taken over the derelict ground that as long as Abbey Hey had a football team this would be their ground. A temporary home, at the old English Steel ground, was arranged on a season to season basis with the owners at theme, Clayton Analine but after only 2 years, the ground was sold to a local builder who required the land to build houses on. During the two years the club were based at the ground, negotiations with Crossley Motors Ltd had been taking place to buy a disused ground they owned in Goredale Avenue, Gorton. Unfortunately, the land was not in good order and was becoming an eyesore with fences falling down and people using it for fly-tipping. Contractors working for the council had tipped 1,000 tons of hardcore onto the car park to prevent access to the ground. Matters had reached an impasse between Abbey Hey FC and Crossleys when Manchester City Council stepped in, They informed Crossleys that if an agreement was not made with the people that they were dealing with, the ground would be the subject of a compulsory purchase order. This tipped the scales in favour of the football club who were asked to make an offer for the ground which was promptly accepted. Legal representation and a bank loan were quickly arranged and in 1984 the club at last had their own home. The bank loan was paid off and the ground was improved including having the fly tipped hardcore removed from the ground. These improvements to the ground could only have been achieved by the hard work and dedication of the committee, who not only raised the money to carry out the improvements but also carried out 90% of the work themselves Jim Clark was to join during these turbulent times as manager, a position he was to occupy for the next 18 years. The club went on to gain success in the Manchester League during the late eighties and early nineties, winning the Premier Division Championship on five occasions during this period. In 1997, after finishing 2nd in the Manchester Premier Division, the club applied for membership of The North West Counties League. Following a ground grading visit by League Officials, the club was accepted into the 2nd Division for the 1998 season. Abbey Hey's first season in the North West Counties League couldn't have been more exciting. Although Fleetwood Freeport had taken the Division Two title, the runners-up place was still to be decided. On the last Saturday of the season any one of three clubs could have taken second place, but it was Abbey's 3-2 win at Darwen that clinched promotion to Division One in their first season in the league. Promotion to the 1st Division meant that the club had to install floodlights. True to form, they designed, ordered, erected and wired them within a couple of months. The biggest job during the ground improvements was the building of the new clubhouse and dressing rooms. Planning permission was given with the majority of work once again being carried out by the clubs own members. To finance this project, low interest loans were taken out from The FA with the remainder of the money achieved through fund raising schemes. In their first season in the top flight, Abbey Hey had a tremendous start, topping the table at one point early in the season, but a drop in form saw them finish mid table. Still, a highly creditable first season in Division One and they had more than proved themselves worthy of their rapid rise from the Manchester League to the NWCFL Division One. 2000/01 again saw Abbey finish in a comfortable mid table position, proving that the season before had been no fluke, but the following season started with a run of poor results including some heavy defeats. The second half of the year saw an improvement which lifted the club away from any relegation threat but at the end of the season, manager Jim Clark decided to resign. This ended an eighteen year stint in management in which he had overseen many of Abbey Hey's finest moments. Jim's replacement for 2002/03 was Tony Hancock, previously Woodley Sports Reserve Team manager, who also brought Paul Kirkham from Woodley as his assistant. It was their first attempt at management at this level of football and Abbey Hey's final position of 13th showed that they rose to the challenge. During the season, Calum Dempsey won the NWCFL player of the month award for September and goalkeeper Liam Higginbottom won the October safe hands' award. However, at the end of their first season in charge, Tony and Paul left the club to retun to Woodley Sports as managers of the first team. There was some celebration as Abbey Hey reached their 100th birthday and also reached the 3rd round proper (last 64) of the FA Vase. The club has played in the FA Cup for the first time since the turn of the millennium, but have only won one tie, a victory over Bamber Bridge on penalties in 2002-03, to reach the First Qualifying Round for the only time.

ABBEY HEY WALKER 87(P)
SATRUDAY 5th JANUARY 2019/NWCFL PREIMER DIVISON/STADIUM /HT: 1-0/ATT:120 It was a cloudy, chilly afternoon but the pitch was in fine condition. An attendance of 120 saw Charnock kick off playing towards the Mawdesley Plantation end after Abbey Hey won the toss. It has been a disappointing season so far for the visitors who were well adrift at the foot of the table with only 11 points, seven points behind Hanley Town, before the game kicked off. They had however received a boost on the previous Saturday with a win at Irlam. Abbey soon showed that they were determined to fight their way out of the relegation zone and produced a spirited display that brought the best out of the home defence. In the opening minute a Bibby through ball saw keeper Heywood just beat Davison to the ball and then Spencer cut through from the half way line to fire a shot wide. Baxter went down with an injury and had to be replaced by Clarke after six minutes. The visitors were full of running and it was a bright opening to the game by both sides; Noblet attempted a volley from 25 yards that just cleared the bar. Charnock took the lead on 12 minutes, a ball down the right found Noblet who raced towards the bye-line Solademi came across to tackle but missed out and Joe cut in and his cross found WOODS beyond the far post and he cut back and shot past the keeper. There was then a long delay while Solademi received treatment and eventually he was carried off on a stretcher and Abbey had to use a second substitute. Although Charnock had the lead the game was very evenly balanced with the visitors seeing plenty of the ball and at times the home defence was stretched. Bibby hit a free kick narrowly over the bar before the visitors’ Oliver Walker shot across the goal from the left, Haslam took a touch so it was a corner but it came to nothing. Abbey maintained the pressure and they should have equalised after 34 minutes when a left footed centre from the right found Haydock right in front of goal but his header was weak and straight into the arms of Haslam. Davison then sped down the right but his centre was too strong, however Woods picked up the ball and laid it back to Walker but his shot was high over the bar. Then on 37 minutes another free kick for the visitors caused the home defence problems, several attempted clearances were blocked before the ball came out to Murray on the edge of the area but he shot over the bar. It was then Noblet’s chance to shoot over the ball after he had exchanged passes with Davison. On the stroke of half time Noblet found Woods on the left, his cross reached Grimshaw beyond the far post but his header was over the bar. It had been a close matched first half with the game being played at great pace but the Mark Woods’ goal had given the Villagers the advantage. The second half proved to be as close as the first with both sides out to attack, Abbey continued to produce some excellent football but as in recent games the Charnock defence stood firm. Maybe Charnock failed to create many chances but having taken the lead it was important not to concede and throughout the remainder of the game Abbey failed to calve out any real chances. Charnock could have increased their lead after 48 minutes when Woods found Noblet just beyond the right hand post but Heywood turned his shot from an angle out for a corner. When Bibby got forward to the right bye-line and pulled the ball back to Noblet he hit his shot high over the bar. Bibby kept a free kick from just outside the area low and it beat the jumping wall but Heywood was down to collect. The visitors were playing some good football up to the edge of the area but their attacks were breaking down at this point. When Grimshaw held off a defender in the area his shot was blocked. Oliver Oxley replaced Joe Noblet on 71 minutes. On 01 KYLE HASLEM 01 ROSS HEYWOOD 73 minutes Haslam came out to punch away a free kick and then 02 SPENCER BIBBY 02 LOUIS EDWARDS blocked a shot. With the game balanced on a knife edge Charnock finally scored a second goal on 80 minutes, a through ball put Oxley 03 JAMES WALKER 03 NATHAN BAXTER into the area, Heywood could only get a hand to his shot and 04 ARTHUR OKONKWO HIGHAM, who had only been on the pitch for one minute, swept the 04 ASHLEY YOUNG loose ball into the net. The visitors may be bottom of the table but 05 JAMES MCLELLAN 05 RYAN SCHOFIELD they did not throw the towel in and the game continued at the same high tempo. Oliver Turner came on for Schofield on 87 minutes then 06 STEPHEN SOLADEMI 06 TROY CARSLEY Ashley Young was adjudged to have fouled a player in the box, the 07 LEWIS HAYDOCK visitors had a chance to get back in the game and Oliver Walker made 07 MATTHEW DAVISON no mistake from the spot. So the game reached fever pitch for the 08 THOMAS MURRAY final three minutes of normal time and five of added. Charnock ran 08 NATHAN FAIRHURST the clock down by having a spell holding the ball up in their oppo09 OLIVER WALKEE 09 CARL GRIMSHAW nent’s left hand corner before a minor fracas saw Matt Davison carded. There was a surprise, however, when in the same incident Murray 10 DANIEL HOPKINS 10 JOSEPH NOBLET received a straight red card when all he appeared to do was kick the 11 YAW OPOKU-BERCHIE ball away against the pitch fencing. In added time there was an off the 11 MARK WOODS ball incident and Davison received a second yellow card and Haydock suffered the same punishment. After just over five minutes of injury time the final whistle was blown and Charnock collected the three 12 ROBERT SWALLOW 12 OLIVER OXLEY points. lt had been another good performance from the Villagers; per14 TALYOR MAGUIRE haps before the match started there were those who expected an 14 ROSS O’FARRELL easy game but Abbey Hey have re-organised and they produced a 15 SAMUEL OKO spirited display. Having gained an early advantage it was up to Char15 JACOB HIGHAM nock to hang onto it and they defended as a team as a result Abbey 16 THOMAS CLARKE 16 OLIVER TURNER Hey had very few shots on target and it would have been another clean sheet but for the penalty in the dying minutes. 17 KEIRON DALE

HARRIES 62,72 PETT 86 Saturday 13TH JANUARY 2018/The Brian Addison Stadium/Att:85/HT:0-1
ew signings Scott Harries, Max Rothwell and Ryan Riley all started for Gate whilst Jordan O'Mahoney came into the back four. Gate started the game all guns blazing with the majority of the play all in Abbey Hey’s half. The front four of Riley, Rothwell, Pett and Harries all adding that extra bit of quality which has seen Gate go three games without a win. Gate were almost caught when on a rare break forward from the visitors, a cross into the box almost caught out Ben Fletcher in goal, luckily for Gate the ball only found the crossbar. Get went close on ten minutes when Dave Rossall who was also making his first start at The Brian Addison Stadium since rejoining the club looked to find Ryan Riley. Riley though was just caught offside with the goal at his mercy. The visitors would take the lead ten minutes before half time, some poor defending from the corner the downfall for Gate. The ball in found the unmarked Andy Smith who headed into the far corner past Fletcher. HALF TIME: Squires Gate 0-1 Abbey Hey Gate started the second half much with the same intensity of the first half. The feeling around the ground was always that Andy Clarkson’s men would get back into the game but would have to be patient. More clever football on the edge of the Abbey Hey box after 59 minutes saw Gate go close again. The ball was laid back to Dean Ing who looked for a man at the back post, but his cross was too heavy. Gate would keep the pressure on and just a minute later equalised. Gary Pett’s header was saved by the keeper before Scott Harries reacted quickest to tap in whilst falling over. Gate who already looked full of confidence seemed buoyed by the equaliser and looked to push forward to take the lead. Andy Richards beat his man in the box before taking aim only to be denied by the keeper, the resulting corner was cleared by the visitors. What then followed was three great chances for Gate, all three just needing a touch for Gate to take the lead. First Dean Ing’s cross was put out for a corner before Tarren Moxon’s cross back in from the resulting corner was blocked. Scott Harries then put in a teasing ball, but nobody in Blue could get a touch. Gate’s pressure would be rewarded on 69 minutes when they’d take the lead. Scott Harries again in the right place at the right time to tap in after Dean Ing’s shot looked to be being cleared off the line. Gate’s dominance would be rewarded again 5 minutes from full time when Gary Pett extended their lead. He lined up one of his trademark free kicks from the edge of the box firing past the keeper right into the top corner. Sadly Gate who were clearly still celebrating the third goal would concede straight from kick off. The visitors going straight down the other end to grab a goal back all be it to late.

In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid FOOTBALL’S Coming Home at last for supporters in the south-west after Truro City announced this week they are to make a welcome return to Cornwall and play the remainder of their home games back at their Treyew Road home. The White Tigers were forced out of their home ground back in August with supermarket giant Lidl planning to build a store on the site. But now those plans have been shelved, the National League South club have been given the green light to return home and resume as the only senior football club in Cornwall. Truro had been playing their home games at Torquay United’s Plainmoor ground, meaning a gruelling 180-mile round trip for Tigers supporters. Naturally, that move badly hit fan attendance figures with the White Tigers averaging fewer than 200 fans per game because of the two-hour trip to south Devon. Their lowest recorded attendance was just 86 for their game against Hemel Hempstead Town in October, while just 52 ‘home supporters’ made the trip on New Year’s Day against their landlords with 2,760 ‘away’ fans making up an attendance figure of 2,812. In a statement, the club said: “We are pleased to confirm that Truro City Football Club will be playing the remainder of this season’s home Vanarama National League South and Buildbase FA Trophy matches at Treyew Road. “The move back has been necessitated for a number of reasons, including the late withdrawal of Helical from the retail development project. “It understood that the ground’s owners, JIL, are still in talks with Lidl and there is still a strong possibility that the development will still go ahead sometime in the future.” Now, at least with their own roof above their heads, Truro City can look to the future and a proposed move to the new 10,000-seater Stadium for Cornwall, which they would share with the Cornish Pirates rugby club. Work on that development has yet to begin with Helical, the firm which bought Treyew Road, still in discussions about settling Truro City's £2 million contribution towards the £12m project. At the time of writing this, Truro were due to kick off their first next Vanarama National League South home match at their new permanent home against south-west rivals Weston-super-mare on Saturday January 19. The club added: “We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible supporting the team at Treyew Road between now and the end of the season.” If the Stadium of Cornwall really is, as promised, to become a future hotbed of senior football in the south-west, then it’s important that White Tigers fans embrace the present. AROUND THE LEAGUE The second weekend of 2019 delivered a full programme of league fixtures and the usual mix of talking points. Premier Division leaders City of Liverpool took advantage of dropped points by nearest challengers at kick off Congleton Town, to move 14 points clear at the top, thanks to a 3-0 win at Squires Gate. Two early goals from Craig Cairns laid the foundations for the win, with Karl Clair adding a third ten minutes into the second half. Bootle moved into second place, ahead of Congleton Town on goal difference, with their 5-2 defeat of Whitchurch Alport. The teams were tied at 2-2 at half time, but second half strikes from Connor Millington, Kieran Halligan and Steven Jones earned the win for the Bucks. Congleton Town's goalless draw at home to Burscough saw them drop to third place, and Charnock Richard moved up into fourth, ahead of Barnoldswick Town on goal difference, after their 5-0 win at Barlick. Charnock captain Carl Grimshaw was inevitably involved in the goalscoring action, scoring his fourth hat trick of the season. Runcorn Town drop to 7th after going down 2-1 at Litherland REMYCA, Lennon Whewell on target with a double for Remy, and Ashton Athletic are up to 8th following their 2-0 win over Northwich Victoria at Brocstedes Park. Christopher Webster and Matthew Reid were the Yellows' scorers on a day when Athletic's joint-managers Jay Foulds and Dougie Pitts celebrated their 300th game in charge. There was a lively last 20 minutes at the St Lukes Barton Stadium, with Irlam eventually emerging with a 4-2 win over 1874 Northwich. With the teams tied at 1-1 Liam Pollitt put Irlam ahead only for Michael Koral to immediately level for 1874. But Irlam weren't done and an own goal and Marcus Perry's 16th goal of the season sealed victory for Michael Dodd's men. In the other game, bottom of the table Abbey Hey earned a morale boosting 1-0 win at Silsden, thanks to Oliver Walker's 69th minute winner. In the First Division North, Longridge Town and Avro continue to set the pace at the top, with both recording good wins in advance of the clash between the two in midweek. A Jay Hart hat trick and a double from Richie Allen helped Longridge Town to a 6-2 win at AFC Darwen, and Michael Norton scored twice in Avro's 5-1 win at Ashton Town. Longridge lead Avro by eight points, having played two games more, and AFC Liverpool joined Prestwich Heys in joint third place after their 2-0 win over Heys, thanks to goals from Anthony Lyons and Callum Schorah. Lower Breck leapfrogged over Carlisle City into fifth place after a hat trick of penalties from Stephen Milne earned them their 3-0 win over the Cumbrians at Gillford Park. The highest scorers of the day were Garstang, whose 8-2 win over Shelley included a hat trick from Jacob Salisbury. The battle to avoid the relegation places took another twist with Daisy Hill moving out of the bottom two with their 3-1 victory over Cleator Moor Celtic at New Sirs, with skipper Ashley Stott scoring twice. That result coupled with Chadderton's 5-0 defeat of Holker Old Boys meant the Stags drop into second bottom place, Harry Pratt grabbing a double for Chaddy. Bacup Borough's 4-0 home win over Atherton LR means LR remain bottom of the table, and the other two games in the division ended all square, with AFC Blackpool being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Steeton, and St Helens Town sharing a 2-2 draw with Nelson. The battle at the top of the First Division South continues to be fascinating, with just six points separating the top six. Rylands occupy the top spot on goal difference from Wythenshawe Amateurs after their 3-1 win at Sandbach United. James Daniels, Bradley Williams and Warren Gerrard were the Rylands scorers in a win that saw them regain top spot after the Ammies had gone to the top of the pile on Friday night with a 3-0 win at Barnton, in which Jordan Burton scored twice. Stone Old Alleynians continued their good run with a 3-1 home win over Cheadle Heath Nomads, with leading scorer Jack Tomlinson adding another two goals to his tally to move him on to 28 for the season Abbey Hulton United stay in fourth place despite going down 3-1 at Wythenshawe Town, a result that means Town are one place behind in 5th. Matthew Landgregan, Lee Gregory and Liam Crellin-Myers were the Town scorers in a win that sees them stay five points ahead of Vauxhall Motors, whose 5-0 home win over Stone Dominoes kept them in 6th. David Webb's hat trick was the highlight of a good afternoon for the Motormen. FC Oswestry Town's 3-0 win over Eccleshall on Friday night was set in motion by goals from Liam Parry and Michael O’Reilly in the opening 34 minutes, with Samuel Spridgeon adding a third on the stroke of full time. A Kiarno Samms penalty and a second goal from Adam Etches just before half time secured Stockport Town's 2-1 win in the derby clash at Cheadle Town, and Maine Road continued their revival with a 3-1 win at home to Cammell Laird 1907. Joseph O`Brien, Kyle Hendley and Lee Hendley scored for Road in a win that moves them above Lairds into fourth bottom place, and although Ellesmere Rangers remain second from bottom, they picked up a point in a 2-2 home draw with New Mills. A double from Adam Davies had put Rangers two ahead, but Ben Bevan and Edward Driver rescued a point for the Millers. In the other game Alsager Town shared a 1-1 draw with St Martins.
