2 2 WINSFORD UNITED KORAL 16, FOSTER 57

Saturday 23rd December 2017 // Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance: 90 Squires Gate battled back to pick up a point at home against Winsford United from losing positions twice in the match. New signing Joey Mullen made his first start for the club having featured from the bench in Gate's last home game, he replaced Dean Ing who was unavailable. Defender Jordan O'Mahoney also returned to the side having last featured in Gate's 1-0 loss away at Bootle where he picked up MOM. The visitors could have opened the scoring after just a minute from a corner. The corner was taken short before the resulting shot was headed off the line by Andrew Richards. Gate had to be patient and concentrate at the back for the first half against a side who has won three of their last four games, only losing to form team Widnes last Monday. They made the break through in this one after 16 minutes. A simple ball through found the run of Mike Koral who slotted past Ben Fletcher to give Winsford the lead.

HALF TIME: Squires Gate 1-1 Winsford United The second half started with a golden chance for Gate to take the lead. Tarren Moxon had two bites at goal but was unlucky with both. The first was fired straight at the keeper who couldn't keep hold of the ball and when the ball came back to the winger he could only put the second attempt over the bar. Winsford would take the lead again in the 57th, this time from a freekick. Winger Scott Taylor, who caused Gate problems all afternoon, whipped the ball into defender William Foster at the back post for him to poke home. Gate had Ben Fletcher to thank on 62 minutes when he dived on what looked like a Winsford goal to stop the ball on the line and keep his side in the game.

That save would become all the more important ten minutes later when Gary Pett struck again to level the game for his side. More luck for Gate as the ball fell fortunately to the striker, he did well to keep the ball unGate's first equaliser of the game had a large hint of good christmas luck, something which Gate have been missing this season. It was Gary Pett who der control before firing past the visiting keeper Matthew Green. Winsford went close again late on when player/manager Lee Duckworth's fresh of a hatrick in his last game against Barnton, beat the offside trap, freekick struck both the crossbar then post before being cleared by Gate. before chipping the ball over the onrushing keeper for a classy finish. The homeside also went close with one of the last kicks of the game Sadly for midfielder Joey Mullen, making his first start for the club, his after- when Gary Pett headed over from the penalty spot, inches away from noon would end short in the 41st minute. He pulled up and had to be recompleting his hatrick. placed just before half time by Ryan Charnley.

Tuesday 26th December 2017 // Victoria Park // Attendance:103 Gate had led at half time only for the homeside to right back, scoring late into the second half. Gate took the lead just two minutes into the game. Good work from the inform Gary Pett who beat his man to get into the box before avoiding a challenge. He then played the ball across goal to find Mark Buchan who had the simple task of tapping in the ball.

Returning midfielder Dean Ing looked to extend Gate's lead straight into the second when he made space for himself, only to see his shot roll into the keepers arms. Ing could have then been in again minutes later when Mark Buchan looked for the midfielder's run, but the ball was cut out before it could find him. The homeside would equalise in the 74th minute. Defender Luke Gibson heading past Fletcher from a deep freekick into the back post. Burscough would then go on to win the game late Gate could have then doubled their lead in controversial circumstances. The into the last 10 minutes when a draw looked likely. The ball wasn't home keeper was lucky to stay on the pitch after nine minutes when he cleared by Gate allowing Matthew Ward to tap in a the back post for his pulled down Gary Pett who was in on goal. Pett dusted himself down and third goal in four games. with the keeper only receiving a yellow card, lined up a freekick just outside the box. Unfortunately for Gate, the freekick deflected off the inside of the post before being cleared. Ben Fletcher then had to be alive in a mad spell to deny the homeside three times in six minutes. He first had to be alive when a freekick into the box found the head of Chad Whyte which Fletcher saved. Then from a similar area, Fletcher denied the homeside again before saving his best till last denying form Gate striker Terry Cummings on the half hour mark. The homeside would eventually equalise five minutes before half time. From Gate's own attack the Burscough broke forward seeing Ben Fletcher finally beaten by Peter Henerty. Gate wouldn't end there though and found themselves back in front on the stroke of half time. Gate stalwart Andrew Richards, forward from full back, showed great composure when the ball fell to him in the box to stroke the ball under Samberg to give his side the lead.

Saturday 6th Janaury2018 // The Marine Travel Arena // Attendance:142 Squires Gate picked up their first point of 2018 away at struggling AFC Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, but had plenty of chances to win it. Manager Andy Clarkson welcomes back defender Dave Rossall into the side after he returned from a spell away from the club. Clarkson also had midfielder Joey Mullen back fit earlier than expected after his injury against Barnton earlier in the season. In form Gate striker Gal Pett had the first chance for his side after six minutes in this one, but he saw his shot from outside the box go over the bar after jinking past a man to make room for himself. Pett was again involved two minutes later when he was the target for Jake Higham, forward from defence. Higham looked to float the ball to the front post, but the home keeper collected before Pett could reach the ball. Former Gate defender Chris Anderson put a dangerous looking ball into the box when he got forward from full back on 16 minutes, but nobody in red could meet the cross. AFC Liverpool then went on to have four successive corners but couldn't make them count, one of them saw Gate keeper Ben Fletcher pull of a superb one handed save to his right to deny AFC. The half time whistle blew just after AFC broke forward, Gate coming under no danger though as Edgar's shot was eas-

HALF TIME: AFC Liverpool 0-0 Squires Gate Gate made a good start to the second half with the impressive Joey Mullen, back from injury, sending in a dangerous ball into the box but nobody could meet it. AFC then had a corner of there own, but Gate managed to clear that with ease. Joey Mullen again showed his quality when he won another corner for Gate down the right hand side. The resulting corner fell to Gary Pett at the back post, but he could only head over the bar. Gate's best chance of the game came on 62 minutes. After good work from both Gary Pett and Jake Higham to put the AFC defence under pressure, the latter had his shot scrambled clear. Midfielder Dean Ing would be next to go close for Gate who looked the only side likely to score in the last 30 minutes. The midfielder made one of his trademark late bursts into the box, only for AFC to clear before he could get his shot away. Gate couldn't find a late winner in the game settling for another point on the road taking them to 14th in the league.

THE BOSS

LUKE GIBSON Luke has been at Abbey Hey since 2012 as not just as Manager but Player and he had been a very successfully time as in his time there as the club not only not be in the Relation zone but a few times has always be up and about up the top off the table.

Luke will hope his team can do better there recent forum has shown as they have only one won in there last 6 games and that win only coming a few days ago v New Mills in the Marcon cup where there beat new mills 5-3 at the home.

This will be the first time these to side met the season and both managers will know that this game is a tough and tight games either though Abbey hey sit one place above the drop. Luke will hope they his team can turn there bad run off forum around and pick up some points.

BREIF HISTORY Jim's replacement for 2002/03 was Tony Hancock, previously Woodley Sports Reserve Team manager, who also brought Paul Kirkham from Woodley as his assistant. It was their first attempt at management at this level of football and Abbey Hey's final position of 13th showed that they rose to the challenge. During the season, Calum Dempsey won the NWCFL player of the month award for September and goalkeeper Liam Higginbottom won the October safe hands' award. However, at the end of their first season in charge, Tony and Paul left the club to retun to Woodley Sports as managers of the first team. There was some celebration as Abbey Hey reached their 100th birthday and also reached the 3rd round proper (last 64) of the FA Vase. The club has played in the FA Cup for the first time since the turn of the millennium, but have only won one tie, a victory over Bamber Bridge on penalties in 2002-03, to reach the First Qualifying Round for the only time. Jim Vince took over for 2003/04 but after a good start to the season, things went wrong. Despite only losing five out of their last ten games, the club ended second from bottom, only avoiding relegation due to the changes made to the non league structure. Jim Vince opted to resign and Chris Bailey took over knowing that a major team rebuilding job was required. In 2004 ten members of the committee were given long service awards for their 25 years of service in Grass Roots Football by The Manchester FA. The 2005/2006 season improved their best league finish by two places, but both the team and the club then started to struggle. A lack of both financial backing and foresight saw the club slowly drop down the league table in the following seasons until 2009/10 saw them eventually hit rock bottom. In 2009/10 Abbey Hey was half way through the season with only 4 points to their name and in the basement position in the league after 25 games. However, following the appointments of Barrie Walker as Manager and Andrew Harris as Assistant Manager in November 2009, Abbey Hey made several new signings with the likes of Jon-Paul Lewis, Gareth Wager, Daniel Cocks, John Hardy, Darren Evans, Lee Knowles and Nathan Finnigan joining the club. This signalled a turn in fortune for the club as they picked up 30 points in the 2nd half of the season however it wasn't enough and they were relegated from the North West Counties Premier Division. The form in the second of the season saw Abbey Hey going all the way to the final of the Vodkat League Challenge Cup beating the likes of Ashton Athletic FC and Bootle FC along the way. Abbey Hey beat Winsford Utd 3-0 in the final and lifted the trophy. Walker and Harris made the decision to blood young local talent, realising that this would serve the club well in the future but that it would take time to reap its rewards. Abbey made a slow start to life in the NWCFL First Division 2010/2011 and departed all cup competitions at the initial stages. However, October signalled a change in fortunes and wins at Atherton Collieries, Daisy Hill and Wigan Robin Park pointed to a brighter 2011. The introduction of quality players such as Antal Tompos, Luke Gibson and Martin Pilkington started to pay dividends though the results did not always reflect this. Unfortunately, the team's home form was to be their downfall as far as progressing up the league table although the team were usually beaten only by the odd goal. For the 2011/12 season, Walker's youth policy started to pay quick dividends as the team has made an excellent start to the league season, remaining in the top four of Division One from day one. Though a run of poor results saw them exit the NWCFL Challenge Cup, FA Vase and 1st Division Trophy they did take the notable scalp of Evo Stik North team Radcliffe Borough in the first round of the Manchester Cup. The season really stepped up a gear as they moved into 2012 with Abbey at one point pushing Wigan Robin Park and Norton United for one of the two promotion places. Though they were to ultimately finish in 3rd place, the season had been an undoubted success as Walker had built a promotion challenging team in just 2 seasons. The 2012/13 campaign started better than anyone at the club could have imagined as the team went unbeaten in the league for the first 3 months. Although unsuccessful in the FA vase, they would eventually reach the latter stages of the FA Cup qualifiers and a plum tie at FC Halifax via fantastic wins at St Helens Town and Sheffield. Rarely stepping out of the top two in Division One, Abbey continued to rack up league wins whilst also moving thru the Challenge Cup, Div One Trophy and Manchester Premier Cup rounds. The first team success was also matched by the newly introduced youth team set up. Both Under 17s and 18s topped their respective Youth Alliance Divisions during the year and impressed many with their style of play and application. As the months progressed a few of the older youth players started to appear in the first team, boding well for the future. Come April and a win at Northwich Villa eventually sealed promotion back into the top flight of the NWCFL ladder.

JOHN BARNETT

This week we interviewed Abbey Hey Fan, John Barnett we asked him what his was hoping for this season, what his memorable moment at his time at abbey hey and we also found what premier league star he would bring to Abbey Hey and finally we just ask him about football in general What are your expectations for the the new season after last season 14th place finished last year? We were looking forward to being comfortable in the top 10. It’s the hope that kills you. This season will been different to last because? If we’re being honest not too much has changed. Inconsistancy is the consistant feature of our game. On our day we are a match for anyone. Not enough of those days this season. What has been Your most memorable moment of all time at Abbey Hey? Reaching the FA Cup Qualifying rounds in 2012 and a trip to FC Halifax Town. In front of a massive crowd at The Shay we attacked them like Abbey Hey but sadly defended like Will Hay and went out 0-8. What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? Bring them all on is what I say. Abbey have beaten top-four sides and lost to bottom-four you just don’t know what you’re going to get with us. What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this season? City of Liverpool and Burscough are new teams to us. Although C-o-L play at Bootle where we’ve been before – top burgers. So were Charnock Richard and Widnes where we’ve already had trips this season and won. We also had a visit to Hallam FC in the Trophy officially the oldest ground in the world memorable even though the 0-0 game wasn’t. If you could change one thing about your club what would it be and why? Apart from an Arab Sheik or Russian Oligarch staging a takeover all we need is someone who can serve up a pie at the Abbstad which isn’t hotter than core of the sun. What teams are you looking forward to playing this year who played well last season? The Runcorn sides and Bootle stand out in this league for me. Which players from Gate do you secretly admire? Tyler Atack – has a great name tho. Fans from other club don't know that Abbey Hey? Have a Manx (No, not a Manc. Somebody from the Isle of Man) as a manager.

If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? David Silva, David Silva and David Silva. Just a joy to watch. There’s not another player in the so-called Best League in the World to touch him. Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? Been there a couple of times. I think we won there last time 3-1. Lovely people. Shame no draught beer in the clubhouse. If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 Abbey Hey players and 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and why? Jonathan McIlwaine (GK), Andy Smith, Wes Morgan, Martin Keown & Steve Howey – Come on – would you pay £15 an hour to face that lot in a drafty sports hall? Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there? Been to that godforsaken North London backwater many times. Saw Maradona at the old stadium and City winning the greatest FA Cup Semi-final of all time at the new stadium (Yaya 1 United 0). I’d love to see Abbey Hey meet Squires Gate in the FA Vase Final next year. Your most Abbey Hey underrated player is? Jonny Hardy – most see him as a 100 percenter / utility player but he’s got bags of ability. Gate should keep eye out on what player from Abbey Hey? Sam Freakes can make Abbey really tick on his day. Pistol Pete Watling has all the experience and quality uo front to make a difference. The best away fan are? AFC Liverpool made the most noise at our place. Unfortuneately most of it aimed at the referee who buckled and sent one of our lads off (same thing happends in the away game – coincidence?). Northwich Vics brought a few. A friendly bunch who seemed to like a flag. Prediction for today game? Fancy Abbey but will be close 2-1 maybe.

SATURDAY 4TH FEBRUARY 2017

.Gate could have gone ahead straight from kick off after good work from Dawson and Higham. Dawson did well to cut the ball back to Higham but the winger could only fire over.Gate were very unlucky not to go ahead after 21 minutes when Abbey Hey cleared the ball off the line. Jake Higham flicked the ball over his man and found the run of Brett Dawson in front of him. Dawson then fired low at the near post but the goal bound shot was cleared before it crossed the line. Just a minute later Gate had another chance though Dawson again. His shot was blocked, the keeper came to collect the ball but was beat to it by Richards. He turned on the edge of the box and chipped the ball back towards goal, but the keeper did well to recover and save. Despite Gate mounting pressure it would be the visitors who would take the lead. The ball was spilled by keeper Joe Griffith for Sam Noar to tap in to give Abbey Hey the lead. Gate had several free kicks as the game became scrappy towards the end of the first half, but couldn't make them count. Andrew Richards was cynically hacked down for the third time by the same player on 41 minutes, but from the resulting freekick the visiting keeper did well to catch the ball. Gate would go into half time level through a lovely finish from the manager. The ball was played into his feet, he turned, flicked the ball up and fired into the bottom corner. The second could have seen Abbey Hey take the lead in the 53rd minute when they saw not one but two efforts cannon off the crossbar. First the freekick from the edge of the box was fired against the crossbar then from the rebound, the same player fired the ball against the underside of the bar with the ball bouncing clear. It was then Gate who went very close down the other end. First Joe Noblet's freekick was tipped over by the keeper before the corner came to nothing. Then in a goal mouth scramble, Gate couldn't find the important touch to find the back of the net. Brett Dawson's shot was blocked before the ball fell to Bamba who fell, but neither he or Andrew Richards could scramble it in. It would then be Abbey Hey who'd take the lead on 74 minutes. A foul right on the edge of the box giving the visitors the chance to take the lead. Keeper Joe Griffith was very unlucky with spot kick, guessing the right way but not being able to stop the powerful shot. The visitors could have then finished the game in the 84th minute with a golden chance. The ball fired into the back post but the winger coming in fired over the bar. They'd soon recover from that though making their lead certain in the 87th minute. The goal was harsh on Gate as the player who crossed the ball was offside but the man who matters in the ground, didn't see it. The offside player crossed into the box for Jonathan Hardy to tap in.

SATURDAY 11TH MARCH 2017

Gates first chance of the game came following a short pass from the home keeper. His pass found Charlie Waters instead of his own player, Waters beat his man down the line, but his cross was too heavy and went out. The impressive Jon Hardy had the chance to put his side in front after six minutes but he fired wide from outside the box. Gate were struggling to deal with the formation that Abbey Hey played and were outnumbered in midfield, struggling to deal with the overlaps from the wing backs. The home side would go close again after half an hour with consecutive corners. The first was taken short but Ben Seear did well to intercept. Abbey Hey learnt from that and fired the next corner into the six yard box, luckily for Gate keeper Andrew Speight punched the ball clear. Gate then attacked, winning themselves a freekick in a promising position. Joe Noblet took the freekick but unfortunately didn't beat the first man. The ball fell to an Abbey Hey player and the homeside attacked with devastating pace. Rio Murray burst clear into Gates box and poked under the onrushing Speight to open the scoring. It was the homeside who were more than on top in the first half coupled with a mediocre Gate display. Some better finishing on show for the homeside could have seen them two or three goals up at half time.

The second half would start alot better for Gate who changed things up at half time matching Abbey Hey, taking Jake Higham off to be replaced by Tarran Moxon. Just two minutes into the second half Gate were awarded a penalty. Ben Seear judged to have been fouled after the ball had left his foot. Joe Noblet confidently stepped up, to score the penalty and level the game for Gate. Sub Tarran Moxon would offer Gate an outlet in the second half with his movement up top, something which they lacked in the first 45. He was in the right place at the right time to give Gate the lead on 58 minutes. The front three all combining, Charlie Waters squared the ball to Seydou Bamba who chose to pass instead of shoot finding Moxon who fired in. Gates lead wouldn't last long, in fact just five minutes. A corner was fired into the back post where Jon Hardy scrambled the ball over the line to level the game. Abbey Hey would then go onto take the momentum of the equaliser and win the game. James Moore was allowed too much room on the edge of the box to fire low into the bottom corner to win the game.

CHARNOCK RICHARD HESSION 24 GRIMSHAW 85

Saturday 6th January 2017/The Abbey Hey Stadium/Attendance: 70 It was a fine afternoon but chilly and Charnock supporters made up a fair proportion of the crowd of 70. Considering all the recent inclement weather the pitch was in good condition but it was still very soft. Charnock won the toss and Abbey Hey kicked off playing with the benefit of a light, northerly wind. There was very little football of note during the opening 25 minutes the home side adopting a more direct style of play which was probably the best considering the pitch and Charnock trying to produce their normal passing football but giving the ball away too easily. Abbey Hey certainly were the more effective during this period and Adam Halton was by far the busiest keeper with Ross Haywood in the home goal not having a shot to save. Early on Grimshaw set up Davison but his shot was way off target but at the other end Walker had to produce a fine tackle when Sam Freakes threatened and when the home side broke, after Young appeared to have been fouled, a shot went just the wrong side of the post with Halton rooted to the spot. So it was rather a surprise, but very welcome, when Charnock took the lead after 25 minutes, new signing Alex Ralph made his mark when he drifted into the centre of midfield and threaded a ball through the home defence that sent JON HESSION clear and as Haywood advanced he coolly rolled the ball past him and into the corner of the net. The goal really boosted the Villagers and they picked up the pace of their game and looked much more like the side that they have been for much of the first half of the season. Sherlock impressed when he knocked the ball up in the air and volleyed goalwards but his effort was off target; it would have been a spectacular goal. A Carl Grimshaw header then just dropped over the angle of the goal but Abbey Hey were back in the game after 32 minutes. Charnock defended poorly down their left and when a centre came in, Freakes just got in front of Bibby and although Halton got a hand to the ball he could not prevent it rolling over the line. Both sides continued to battle away but neither keeper was seriously tested and the sides remained level at the interval. Ross O’Farrell replaced Harvey Close for the second 45 minutes. If there was any advantage from the wind the Villagers had the benefit in the second half, certainly the long ball tactics from Abbey were far less effective but that may have been because Charnock’s performance was much improved. There was an early chance for the team in green when Haywood left his area to clear straight to Nathan Fairhurst and he hit a long distance shot that found the target but a defender had got back onto the goal line and he prevented the Villagers taking the lead. Charnock were now dominating the play but when Young completely missed his kick, O’Farrell did well to marshall the striker wide with Bibby then winning the ball off him. Charnock almost took the lead on 56 minutes, Fairhurst did well down the left and his left footed centre found Hession but his header came back off the post. Spencer Bibby then cut right across the pitch, fed Ralph who gave him the ball back and he set up Sherlock who shot from distance and Haywood had to dive to turn the ball around the post. Abbey Hey were really struggling up front but a run down their right saw a centre flash across the face of the Charnock goal with 01 ADAM HALTON 01 ROSS HEYWOOD no-one on hand to take advantage. The standard of football on show was still not impressive but it was becoming a case of could the Villagers 02 SPENCER BIBBY 02 ROBERT SWALLOW snatch a winning goal. Ralph switched to the right and created a couple 03 JAMES WALKER 03 JACK TINNING of moments in the home defence and then Fairhurst and Davison had powerful shots blocked. Joe Noblett replaced David Sherlock and then 04 HARVEY CLOSE 04 LEE WILSHAW Ant Hough came on for Jon Hession. Carl Grimshaw found some space 05 ASHLEY YOUNG 05 MATTHEW COOK down the right but when he cut inside his left foot shot was way over the bar much to his disappointment. Hough made a good raid down the 06 DAVID SHERLOCK 06 LEWIS HAYDOCK left and his centre saw a shot diverted for a corner. The pressure was 07 MATTHEW DAVISON continuing to build and finally Charnock achieved the breakthrough on 07 ASHFORD BLAKE 85 minutes, Matt Davison producing a diagonal cross which saw GRIM08 NATHAN FAIRHURT 08 SAME FREAKS SHAW nip in at the back post to poke the ball into the net. It was then just a case of Charnock holding onto their lead for the final five minutes 09 CARL GRIMSHAW 09 PETER WATLING of normal time and then the same period of added time. It had not been

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

PUTTING THE SPORTMANSHIP IN SPORTS

1930

On 9 January 1930, Igor Netto, renowned for one of the most memorable displays of sportsmanship in football, was born in Moscow. One of the Soviet Union's greatest players, Netto, who played at left back and in central midfield, spent his entire club career at Spartak Moscow, where he made 368 appearances from 1949 to 1966. Along the way, he won five league titles (1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1962) and three Soviet Cups (1950, 1958, 1963).In 1952, he earned his first cap for the Soviet national team and eventually claimed the captain's armband. During his time with the team, they won the gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics, then lifted the trophy at the 1960 European Championship. But his most famous moment came during the 1962 World Cup in Chile. On 6 June, the Soviets were playing against Uruguay in the group stage with both teams needing a win to guarantee a spot in the knockout rounds. In the 75th minute, with the score level at 1-1, the referee awarded a go-ahead goal to Soviet striker Igor Chislenko, but Netto explained that the ball had entered the goal through a hole in the side netting and convinced the referee to reverse his opinion and disallow the goal (the USSR went on to win anyway with an 89thminute goal from Valentin Ivanov and advanced, but lost to hosts Chile in the quarterfinals). After his retirement as a player, Netto managed several teams, including brief spells in charge of Spartak Moscow and the Iranian national team. He passed away in 1999 at the age of 69.

MARTA TAKES FIVE

2010

On 10 January 2010, Marta won her fifth consecutive FIFA World Player of the Year award. After finishing third in voting for 2004 and second in 2005, the Brazilian forward finally won her first World Player of the Year award in 2006 while playing for Umeå in Sweden, then repeated as winner in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, she moved to the US to play for the Los Angeles Sol and finished the season as the league's top scorer, leading to her record fourth World Player of the Year award (Lionel Messi matched that record with a fourth award of his own in 2012). When Los Angeles folded in January 2010, she joined FC Gold Pride, who selected her with the first pick in the WPS supplemental draft. She repeated as the league's top scorer that season and helped Gold Pride win the WPS Championship with a 4-0 win over Philadelphia on 26 September. Just over two months later, she was named World Player of the Year for a fifth time, setting a new record. She came close to extending the record in 2011 and 2012, but finished second in the voting for both years, first to Japan's Homare Sawa and then to the USA's Abby Wambach.

YEAH, IT’S ALL SMILES NOW BUT JUST WAIT 2003 On 11 January 2008, Bayern Munich announced that Jürgen Klinsmann would replace outgoing manager Ottmar Hitzfeld at the end of the season, but it was a match that didn't last. Klinsmann, who played briefly for Bayern during a career that also included stops at Stuttgart, Inter, Monaco, and Tottenham, had held only one prior managerial post, but it was an impressive one. Guiding the German national team from 2004 to 2006, he retooled the administration of the entire organization, from the youth team up. But after taking the senior side to the World Cup semifinals in 2006, he stepped down, citing his intention to rest and spend more time with his family. But in 2008, Bayern lured him from retirement, announcing in January that he was going to take the team over in July, replacing Hitzfeld (who went on to win the league title--his fifth with Bayern--that year, as well as his third German Cup). Klinsmann proceeded to restructure the club as he had done with Germany, starting with a new player development center. But toward the end of his first season, his relationship with the board of directors had soured. Even though Bayern had reached the semifinals of the Champions League and were sitting three points out of first in the Bundesliga with five games still to play, the board sacked Klinsmann. After another two-year break, Klinsmann returned to football as manager of the

LAST TIME OUT?

BARNTON 0 SQUIRES GATE 0 It certainly wasn't a classic but it was perhaps what Gate needed after three defeats on the bounce. Winger Charlie Waters could have made the perfect start to his Squires Gate career on 10 minutes when he fired a great chance wide. Manager Danny Penswick played a lovely through ball behind the full back to find Waters, but his first time shot was fired wide of the post. The homeside then had two chances, first Chris Smith headed wide at the back post from a corner, then Jason McShane fired wide from a long way out. Manager Danny Penswick then fired wide to end what was a good spell of possession from Gate around Barnton's area. Joe Noblet then fired over at a second attempt after Charlie Waters was fouled after a mazy run. Down the other end the home side saw a goal ruled out for offside on 24 minutes. The ball cut back from the goal line into the six yard box and fired in but the player that passed it was judged to be offside. The second half became more of a scrappy affair with only one team looking likely to win the game. Charlie Waters again came close to opening his account for the club on 59 minutes. Paul Carroll's throw in was headed down by Seydou Bamba to find the winger, but his shot was fired over the bar. As the clock ticked on the game became more stretched with Gate looking to score a late winner. Charlie Waters was again involved when he latched onto a lovely through ball from Paul Carroll but his shot was blocked and cleared. Ten minutes later Waters found the run of sub Dawson whose shot rebounded into the patch of Seydou Bamba, but he couldn't adjust quick enough to shoot. Dawson and Bamba again linked up three minutes later, but the latter headed wide from Dawson's cross in. The late chances wouldn't end there for Gate with two in the last minute. First manager Danny Penswick could have won it but his shot from inside the box was blocked and cleared at the second attempt. The moments later Brett Dawson crossed the ball in from the goal line to find the head of Seydou Bamba but he couldn't keep his header down and fired over the bar.
