v Abbey Hey 02.04.2016 NWCFL Premier Division Kick Off: 15:00 Issue 21 ÂŁ1.50
DANNY
PENSWICK Good afternoon everyone, I’d like to welcome the Abbey Hey supporters and committee members to The Royal British Legion Stadium for our NWCFL fixture. Today is a vital game at a crucial part of the season for us. This season has been far from easy compared to last season but I am seeing a big improvement from the lads, both on the pitch and in training. I would like to thank our fans for their continued support.
“Today is a vital game at a crucial part of the season for us”
When I took over back in October, we were without a win in the league and well adrift towards the bottom of the table. Since then, we’ve put good performances and results together and we are looking more organised over the pitch. We have picked up some great points along the way, 1874 Northwich, drawing away at Colne, and winning away at Nelson in that unbeaten from the start of February.
“We are looking more organised al over the pitch”
I’m not going to lie, it has been a disappointing week but let’s not get too down about it. Only a couple of weeks ago, we had beaten 1874 Northwich, so let’s have some perspective on where we are. As I said last week, we can only take each game as it comes. Abbey Hey are not on the best away form having not won any of their last 5 away games, and with no disrespect to Abbey Hey, we need to win these sort of games if we want to stay in this division. Our visitors have also had their share of impressive results - winning at home against Atherton Collieries for example. They have strength in depth and sit comfortably in mid table so fair play to them.
“It’s been a disappointing week but let’s not get too down about it”
The lads have worked hard in training this week so I hope they will continue to work hard and show that on the pitch. One thing I ask for, is more consistency. Up the Gate!

Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S.E.I. [Maintenance] LTD) Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. He kept numerous clean sheets and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form. Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship) Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence on the pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own. Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship) After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the 2015/16 season.
Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd) One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the Year 2014/15. Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship) A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club. Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore) Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front. Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship) Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was beneficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season. Conah Bishop (Available for sponsorship) Conah is one of the youngest players in the squad and plays on the right side of midfield. He has the pace to run at the opposition and can also score goals. He is a great addition to the team. Joe Noblet (Available for sponsorship) Joe had a spell with Gate a few seasons ago, and returned under the new management of Danny Penswick. He is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and will be sure to add goals to the squad.
Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship) Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.
Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship) The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a big influence on games when in the mood.
Antony Stayte (Available for sponsorship) Stayte is a great addition to the squad, who brings experience from his time at AFC Fylde and from teams in a higher tier. He knows how to organise and motivate his team mates and is very good at holding the ball up.
Ashley Rowley (Sponsored by TravelCare World) Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact this season.
Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White) Danny is the manager and captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.
Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship) Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this season.
Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship) Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in 2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.
Ryan Tanser (Available for sponsorship) Ryan joined the club in October and came off the bench in the 5-2 defeat away at Atherton Collieries. He scored his first goal for the club on his first full debut in our 5-1 win over Maine Road in the MEN United cup. He will bring goals to the team for sure.

During the formative years and during the two World Wars the Club was disbanded and reformed on a number of occasions. The Club played in a number of leagues with some success during the intervening years but the Club really came into its own in the 1960s after it took in the players of the Admiralty Gunnery Engineering Department which had for years been based on Ashton Old Road in Openshaw and was at this time closing down. Alf Gentry was at this time was manager of Abbey but decided that with the influx of the new players he would step down in favour of the manager of AGED. Danny Danson who went on to have great success with the team. Alf who had been for years the prime mover of the Club stayed on in a senior position within the Club for many years to share in the success that the Club would have in coming years. The new players and manager made up the backbone the club during the 1960s with some of the players staying on for years after their playing careers had ended, notably Allan Vaughan who occupied the positions of treasurer, and secretary as well as running the Vets team for many years. Ken Brown also stayed on as manager after Danny retired with some great years winning numerous honours culminating in 1978 the Club decided to apply to apply for a position in the Manchester League. The application was successfull and the following year the Club began playing in 2nd. Division of The Manchester League which they went on to achieve promotion in their first season. Reaching this position meant that the Club had to find an enclosed ground suitable for playing their home games. The nearest ground available at this time was in fact miles away in Chorlton on St. Werburghs Road. The ground was owned by a car dealership and was being used by a local school . It was agreed that if we carried out some work on the dressing rooms such as installing showers etc we could rent the ground .

If football matches were won on possession in the opponents half, the home side would have picked up the points, but a fine display by the visiting defence withstood all the pressure, making chances for their forwards to show their skills, and make scoring opportunities at the other end. The first to take advantage was Danny Penswick, who raced onto a through ball from skipper Andy Richards, and finished well, beating the advancing goalkeeper from 30 yards, putting the visitors in the lead on 37 mins. The rest of the first half was full of action, but neither side could make further headway. The second half followed the same pattern, until debutant Ryan Riley's appearance from the subs bench, it lifted the Gate's pressure on the away goal. His first touch had him racing in on goal, and a stretched foot of a home defender's tackle prevented him getting a shot away. but he began to trouble the defence, and on the 76th min. celebrated his debut with a great opportunist goal, when keeper and defenders were in a mix up. Riley, nipped in to slot the ball home to make it two nil. Abbey Hey had no time to recover when two mins later Riley, burst down the right, beat defenders, went round the advancing keeper then cooly found Craig Carney, in space, and the Gate forward slotted home the goal, despite slipping onto his side, as he beat the home defenders from 5 yards.
SQUIRES GATE 1 ABBEY HEY 1
SATURDAY 20TH DECEMBER 2014 15:00
It was Abbey Hey who bossed the play in the first half and had large periods of domination. Gate struggled to really control the game and were limited to one or two chances in the first half. Gates best chances of the first half came from a corner, the ball fired into the back post but with both Alex Mckendrick and Josh Westwood jumping for the same ball neither could find the net. The first half was very much stop-start with neither team really having the chance to mount an attack due to the game constantly being stopped by the referee. A lot of the game was being played in the midfield but Abbey Hey had the better of Gate and were constantly winning the second balls to create chances. Into the second half and with just one minute after the restart Abbey Hey opened the scoring. A long ball over the top of Gate's defence found the run of Nico Collins to finish well. Just after the goal was scored Gate introduced Sean Holmes on in place of Alex Colquhoun in search of the equaliser. It was that change that sparked a change in fortunes for Gate that would see them dominate the second half. Much of the second half was played in Abbey Hey's half but on the odd occasion they got out on the attack Gate keeper Ben Fletcher was more than equal to them. Gate struggled to break down Abbey Hey's resilient defence but did so on the 72nd minute, captain Danny Penswick rising highest to head Gate level. It was a frantic

SATURDAY 28TH FEBRUARY 2015 15:00
The first half couldn't have started any poorer for Gate with just 3 minutes on the clock Abbey Hey would open the scoring. The referee was quick to award a free kick just outside the edge of the box which saw Sam Freakes step up to slot the ball past Ben Fletcher in goal. It took Gate 7 minutes to equalise. The ball falling loose from the freekick allowed Chris Anderson to head the ball back across the box to find Mark Buchan unmarked to easily finish. Neither team really had a chance to get a good spell of play in a half that was ruined by officials not letting the game flow. Gate had a final chance late on but after finding good space, Harry Dunn's cutback was just behind Mark Buchan who's shot was straight at the goal keeper. Into the second half, it was Gate who came out the better team. It would be Gate who would take the lead in this tight game a quality clipped ball in from Alex Murphy found the head of Mark Buchan who's header left the keeper helpless to put Gate in the lead and grabbing his fourth goal in two games. The longer the game went on the more it looked like Squires Gate would hold on for the victory. Although Abbey Hey pressed more and more as time went on looking for the equaliser, Gate defended solidly allowing Fletcher in goal a quiet second half. On the odd occasion that Fletcher was tested he was more than capable to deal with the threat specifically when an Abbey Hey midfielder let rip with a long range strike which Fletcher tipped over well. Colin Worrall Ahead of today’s game we spoke to Abbey Hey, and Stalybridge Celtic fan Colin Worral and asked him a few questions about his time watching Abbey Hey.
During your time watching Abbey Hey this season, how would you sum up your performances? What would you say the target is for the rest of the campaign? It’s been a good season so far and we are becoming a tough team to beat even for the top teams in the division, including away draws at Colne and Atherton Collieries. I’d say that the target for the rest of the season is for us to finish as high up the table as possible, and to try and beat our current record points total in this division of 54 points.
Are there any players that Gate fans should watch out for today? If selected Nico Collins will be a handful up front and Kane Hickman as been impressive in centre midfield.
Who has been the best opposition to visit Abbey Hey this season? Runcorn Linnets. They are just solid all over the pitch, and it is easy to see why they are fighting for promotion. I’ll be very surprised if they don’t achieve it this season.
What are your favourite grounds to visit in non league? As a Abbey fan, and Stalybridge fan? I really enjoyed Colne this season, they have a great home support for a team of this level, with a vocal support. For Stalybridge Celtic, it would be Chorley or Gainsborough.
What do you think is the best part about non league football? It’s good value entertainment for the price it is. r44
Which teams have you been impressed with this season? In non league, and in league football? AFC Fylde
If you could bring 3 PL players to Abbey Hey on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? Dele Ali, Aguero, Coutiniho
The last time we played here, Gate won 2-0 in October 2014. What has changed within that time? Abbey Hey are a stronger established premier division team now, more than capable of competing in this division.
Your prediction for today's game? 2-1 win for Abbey Hey.

He’s made the transition from player to manager at a young age but has done so with success. He’s steadied the club since promotion and turned them into a top 10 team.
Gate can expect a solid defence and dangerous frontline with the ability to kill a game of within minutes.
Peter Harlow
As part of our new feature, we spoke to cup football blogger Peter Harlow, who visits grounds in the south west of England, mainly Cornwall, and blogs about them on his website (thecupfootballblogger.wordpress.com). The aim of our new feature is to find out what it is that encourages people to start their non league football adventures, and we ask them a few questions about them. If you have any interesting footballing stories, or adventures we’d love to hear from you.
First of all, what encouraged you to start your footballing adventures? For as long as I can remember my weekends have revolved around football, either playing (at a very low level) or watching. I have also written a lot about the game as a local newspaper reporter in the past but hadn't done much of that for several years. So this season I decided to combine my loves of football and writing and create the blog. It has been an absolute blast.

What is the best part about non league? The best part about non-league is its approachability, if that's the right word. As soon as you get to a ground there is usually someone to talk to who is a real enthusiast for their club and I find that enthusiasm infectious. You get the chance to talk football with everyone at the club, often including players, managers and directors. There are few barriers. And, even more importantly than all that, you often get to see some really good football, much better than people might expect sometimes. How many grounds have you visited now? I have been to 31 cup ties this season, almost all of them in Cornwall and not all at different grounds but my grand total of grounds over the years must be in the hundreds by now. I am not like a pure groundhopper who would instantly have a tally available, I just go where the football takes me. Do you have any favourites, and have you visited any obscure grounds? My favourite grounds change all the time although, as a Millwall supporter of many years standing, I do love The Den. The old Den was a real experience too! In Cornwall at the moment my current favourites are Kellaway Park, the home of Helston Athletic, which has improved out of all recognition in the past year, and Oxland Parc (correct), the charming home of Illogan RBL, which has its own war memorial in one corner. This season I have been to games at Grouter Park, Troon, and The Richard Jory Playing Field in Frogpool. I think they might count as obscure! What has been the most memorable moment that you have seen for a club? (Cup wins, etc) I started the cup football blog because my best footballing memories have usually been of cup games. Watching Millwall beat Sunderland in an FA Cup semi-final at Old Trafford is right up there. And I have been in the winning dressing-room at Wembley! It was back in 1994 when I was working on a newspaper in East Anglia and I covered Diss Town as they went all the way to the final of the FA Vase and then won it in extra time. Talking to the players and officials as they celebrated afterwards was simply fantastic. Have you ever watched any games abroad? If not, what would be the first choices on your list? I have been to a couple of games abroad, including to Creteil, in Paris, in the French second division on a freezing cold Friday night and watching Millwall at Ferencvaros in Budapest on a riotous night in the UEFA Cup. That was memorable. And I have been to Airdrie. Does that count??!! We would all like to go to the great stadia around the world but I would also like to go to BMO Field, the home of Toronto FC in MLS. I have friends out there and have been around the outside of the ground but have never seen a game there. If you were to pick a "dream XI" of players that you have seen live. Who would you pick? (teams in brackets) Tough one this and I am going to try to do it quickly so I don't get too bogged down. GK Bryan King (Millwall); back four of Daniel Passarella (Argentina), Rudi Krol (Holland), Kenny Sansome (Arsenal), Barry Kitchener (Millwall). Krol might have to play full-back! Midfield four of Barry Harlow (Brookside FC from the Southern Area Sunday League in London - he's my brother and should have played at a much higher level), Paul Gascoigne (Spurs and England), Michel Platini (France - before his fall from grace) and Maradona (Argentina). Saw him when he was only 19 and he was a total football genius. The two up top would be Teddy Sheringham and Tony Cascarino, Millwall's best strike force ever. What a team that would be!

RUNCORN LINNETS 2 SQUIRES GATE 0 Squires Gate visited Runcorn Linnets on Saturday looking to get back on track after conceding late equalising goal against 1874 Northwich. The two teams met earlier in the month at School Road with the final score 1-1. Coming into the game Linnets sit 8 points clear of Glossop at the top of the league. Gate Anderson one change to the starting 11 with Zach Clark coming in for Michael Hall. New signings Ashely Rowley and Joshua Kay both started in the bench for this game. Gate had an early chance less than a minute into the game to open the scoring, a pass played back to Mottram didn't have enough power on it but with Buchan baring down Mottram in goal did all he could to get to the ball first and clear it out of danger. Gate again looked to attack early on and on 5 minutes Zach Clark sent in a lovely ball that just needed any touch to score but no one could get on the end of it. Gates early chances seemed to wake the home side up and they went on to be the better team in the first half. A long ball pumped forward from the Linnets goalkeeper found Kevin Towey at the edge of the box who did brilliantly to control the ball but his shot fell straight into the hands of Fletcher. The opener came in the 16th minute, the ball fired out to the left was well controlled before the cross into the box was met by Josh Westwood who's clearance could only find the back of the net to score the own goal. The home side doubled the lead 15 minutes later when Adam Wade controlled the ball on the edge of the box edits unleashing the shot which flew into the bottom corner past the helpless Fletcher. The home side could have made it three late in the half but a brilliant point blank save from Fletcher kept the score at 2-0 going into half time. The start of the second half started much like the first ended, Ben Fletcher again keeping Gate in the game early on. Gate looked a lot better in the second half and more like the team that has been successful this season. Billy McKenna had a chance 20 minutes into the second half. Good hold up play by Alex Mckendrick on the edge of the box before playing through McKenna but his shot was tipped over. Gate then could have scored soon after but Chris Anderson's free kick was just wide if the far post.perhaps Gate's best chance of the game fell to Josh Westwood but his header flew over the bar. As the game went on Linnets seemed to be happy to settle for what they had got and didn't really cause Gate any notable problems
