DANIEL PENSWICK “JANUARY WAS A FRUSTRAING MONTH AS BAD WEATHER NEVER ALLOWED US TO GET INTO A RHYTHM” Good afternoon everyone,

Today we welcome Abbey Hey to the Brian Addison Stadium as we look to get back to winning ways. First of all I would like to wish the supporters, committee and players and I hope you all have a safe journey home. It's the first time we've faced them this season but we know all about them. They're a good attacking young side who can punish anyone in this league. They like to get they ball down and play which will suit us so I'm expecting a cracker out there today.

“They’re a good attacking young side who can punish anyone in this league” January was a frustrating month as the bad weather never really allowed us to get into a rhythm. One win out of two was average at best and after our finish to 2016 I expected more. With only 5 home games left this season, we play a lot of games away from home so we need to be organised and I am sure that we can see the season out and push on for a top half finish with the squad we have.

“We can push on for a top half finish with the squad we have” We've had a good couple of weeks on the training pitch and the lads are eager to get back at it. I've felt we've become a bit predictable recently and my challenge to all the lads it to reignite that creativity. We're at our best as a team when we're attacking but this needs to be done with pace. I'm hoping to see a much better performance from us in the final third. Footballs a great game when you're playing with a smile and winning. I'm hoping to see both on and off the pitch. Up the Gate!!

Danny .

Reported By Mark Ashmore

Squires Gate suffered a defeat at home to Maine Road on Saturday after the visitors came from behind with two first half goals. Squires Gate made a lively start to the game winning an early Freekick after three minutes but Matt Mahoneys ball into the box was too close to the keeper who easily collected. Gate striker Brett Dawson would then almost open the scoring on seven minutes. He weaved his way through the Maine Road defence and shot from outside the box. That shot took a bobble and almost found its way into the bottom corner only for the Maine Road keeper to tip it around the post. Maine Road would then get a toe to the ball before Ben Seear could shoot at the front post. It was from the corner that Gate would win a penalty. The ball finding its way out to Richards at the corner of the box, he charged inside and at the third hack of his feet was bought down for a penalty. Brett Dawson would step up to convert the penalty right into the top corner. The visitors didn't really look to threaten Gate going forward and were arguing amongst themselves up until the 34th minute when the game turned. A weak back pass was played short to keeper Griffiths, he tried to reach the ball but couldn't. That allowed Connor Hughes to nip to the ball and follow it into the net. Maine Road would be buoyed by their equaliser and stepped up a gear finding the net for a second time just before half time. A mistake in defence for Gate allowed Jamie Roe to tap in at the front post after his good work.

Pictures By Albert Cooper The second half was a frustrating one for Gate who tried and tried to find an equaliser but just couldn't make the break through. They saw appeals for a penalty turned away in the 56th minute when a shot from outside the area was blocked by a hand in the area. Gate had corner after corner but just couldn't capitalise from any of them. First a corner fell to Paul Carroll on the edge of the box but his speculative effort was volleyed wide of thepost. Brett Dawson then had a chance when he was sent right through the middle of the Maine Road defence but he was second to the ball with the visiting keeping rushing out and clearing. Gate made a couple of changes in search of another goal but even the subs couldn't help break down Maine Road. It was the manager who had the best chance late into the game after he bought himself on. Fellow sub Joe Noblets corner in was glanced over by the manager.

Q&A This week we caught up with Gate new Goalie Joe Griffiths, Joe only played 3 games so far for gate but has been very good so far because he only conceded 3 in them games. So we interviewed he We found out who encouraged him to stat playing football, what is his first memory playing football and what 4 playing he would love in his defence.

What encouraged you to start playing football? Which players inspired you as a kid? I grew up in a family & a town that was football mad, my dad & my uncles were all quality players, pro wise tho I'd say Peter Schmeichel & Neville Southall. What is your first ever memory of playing football? Do you remember the first game you played in? I had one of those mini goals with a proper net & pegs, would play till it went dark or the ball went over into next doors garden one to many times. If you wasn't a goalkeeper, what other positions would you play in and why? I'm half decent Sunday league centre back, quite like wiping out a centre forward whenever I can. What is your favourite celebration when you score a goal? What is the best celebration you’ve ever seen? Don't get to score many but I'm not bad at penalties & I'll always put my hand up to take one in penalty shoot outs, Classic Alan Shearer celebration is from me. Best I've ever seen is a some young kid thinking he scored a last minute equaliser past me, doing 5/6 back flips then celebrating like he's won the cup only to see the linesman flag up, priceless! If you could pick one team for Squires Gate to come up against in a friendly, which team would you want to go up against? Unrealistically Man United, Realistically AFC Fylde would be a very tough but positive test As this is you not be at gate for to long, do you Remember your first ever game in football and do you remember who it with? My local team where I grew up in Wales,

Caerwys fc under 9's, I was seven playing two age groups up I think. What was the first ever game you went to as a kid? Man United v Wrexham European cup winners cup second round 1990-1991. Went to both legs, united won 5-0 on aggregate as they were miles better but Wrexham had heart for a division 4 side, Supported both ever since if you could play with have any 4 people in your defence who and why, past or present? Right back, Gary Neville - He was just solid & a leader of men. Left Back - Roberto Carlos - fast, strong & could hit the ball. Centre Backs - Rio Ferdinand, looked like he was in total control of everything he did, classy player. Jaap Stam - Naughty fella, loved a tackle & was very quick for a big guy. Who would you say has been the best opposition to come to Gate this season, and who has been the toughest to play against within your time here? Well I'm only 3 games in to my gate career so Main Road were the best to come here so far & Runcorn Town away on nye was the toughest. What is your Favourite ground that you have played at? Always enjoyed cup finals at Bamber Bridges Iron gate stadium If you could change one rule in the game, what would it be and why? Keepers getting sent off for just fouling a player when they are last man, just give a pen & let me save it. with any 4 players of your choice, past or present, who would you pick and why? me in net, David Luiz at the back as he can play a bit for a defender, Kante for

his energy & Pogba for his class in the middle & Zlatan up front because he will win you games. If you were to play in a 5 a side team What was the first shirt you ever owned? Did you have a name on the back of your shirts? Man United 1987 adidas home kit, the one with club badge in the middle of the shirt, classic. Got the United 1994 kit with Kanchelskis 14 on the back, cost me a small fortune that as a kid. If you could bring 3 PL players to Squires Gate on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? De Gea as he's slightly better than me, Sylvan Distan to replace Seydou at the back & Shola Ameobi to replace Seydou up front. What is the last thing you do before you walk out onto the pitch prior to kick off? Shake every players hand & wish them all the best, positive preparation is key to getting positive results. Prediction for the game? With the positive squad spirit I've felt within the squad since arriving at the club a month ago, I believe every game is winnable. So, 2-0 Gate.

INTRODUCING

ABBEY HEY Everything you need to know about today’s visitors This afternoon we welcome Abbey Hey to The Brain Addison Stadium. Abbey Hey are coming into this game with 11 wins so far this season and sitting 11th in the league. Abbey Hey and Gate have played each other 23 times since 2003 Abbey hey have won 6, Gate with 10 and have draw n 7 so they be now doubt that todays game will have goals and will be very tough for both teams. This fixture is the first time these two side have met this season so I have no doubt that both sides would like to win going into the next game near end of season.

Abbey Hey come into the game on the back of a 2-1 lost to Ashton Athletic also a win against AFC Liverpool where there was 2-0 up at half time but in the second half AFC Liverpool got two back but with 5 minutes to go Abbey Hey got the winner. Last Season Abbey hey finished 10th with 16 wins 11 draws and 15 lose and if Abbey Hey wants to finished in the same positons or higher they will be looking to there top scorer Nico Collins who has 17 goals already this season in 23 appearance and would be looking to get more in these closing stages off the season.

THE BOSS: LUKE GIBSON Luke has been at Abbey Hey since 2010 and ever since he has joined the club he was looking on how to improve there league forum and position. This season he want to strengthen the squad even more as they had lost two key player they lost Sam Hind to 1874 Northwich and Sam Freakes to Ramsbottom United. Abbey Hey currently sit mid table and he will be looking to see the season out heading into the top half and improving on last season’s finish.

their playing careers had ended, notably Allan Vaughan who occupied the positions of treasurer, and secretary as well as running the Vets team for many years. Ken Brown also stayed on as manager after Danny retired with some great years winning numerous honours culminating in 1978 the Club decided to apply to apply for a position in the Manchester League. The application was successfull and the following year the Club began playing in 2nd. Division of The Manchester League which they went on to achieve promotion in their first season. Reaching this position meant that the Club had to find an enclosed ground suitable for

The performance from Saturday was in stark contrast to what we have witnessed over the last two games. It was an extremely disappointing defeat and one that was hard to swallow. It may seem harsh having only lost the game by one goal however, the performance was the most frustrating thing to see. There was no tempo to our play, no quality in possession, and not enough desire to match the workrate of Ashton; leaving us second to everything. In the lads defence it had been over a week since we last played, so there's a chance that Ashton may have had the edge over us having competed more recently. Having said that, it is still only three points conceded and we'll be working hard to ensure that performances like those are limited throughout the rest of the season. We would have loved to have had a scheduled fixture for Tuesday night to right the wrongs however, we will have to wait until a week on Saturday against Squires Gate. In the mean time we'll get the lads in and try to organise a midweek friendly at some point to get our sharpness to the right levels.

VIEW FROM AWAY END In our regular feature, we ask away fans to give us an insight into their expectations for the season, about their time watching their club and some general football questions. This week, we caught up with Colin Worrall , we found out what his expectations for season after last season 10th place finish. We also found out what ground that you enjoy visiting, who will ne biggest threat to gate.

What were your expectations after your 10th placed finish last season Aim to finish as high as possible and beat last seasons record points total. What improvements do you think need to be made to improve on last seasons finish? Nothing drastic - there's not a lot going wrong, Consistency would be something we can improve but that's probably common with a young team. After a good solid start to the first half of the season what are your expectations for the rest of the season? There's no reason why we can't push on in the league now, out of the cups so try and finish as high as possible in the league. What teams Has been the best opponent so far this season? Runcorn Town

If you could bring 3 PL players to Abbey Hey on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? Dele Ali, Aguero, Coutiniho Any grounds that you enjoy visiting? No stand out ground, you get a good welcome at all the teams in our league. Which players do you think will be the biggest threat to gate? George Noon / Connor Martin, Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score?

Yes it was last season and it finished 0-0. Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there? Yes a few times, Abbey winning the FA Vase would be good. Prediction for tonight’s game? Squires Gate 1 Abbey Hey 2

West Didsbury v Hanley Town

Q&A This week we caught up with Abbey Hey Player Andy Smith, we found about what encourage to start playing football , his time at Abbey Hey and about football in general. What encouraged you to start playing foot- What was the first ever game you went to ball? Which players inspired you as a kid? as a kid? Used to go and watch Oldham with my dad. One Can't remember my first game as I was only of his friends had set up a junior team and asked young but first main memory is the 94 FA cup me to go train. Used to love watching Andy semi final at Wembley, Oldham v man united Ritchie and Neil Redfearn at Oldham.

Do you Remember your first ever game for

What was the first shirt you ever owned? Did you have a name on the back of your shirts? Would have been an Oldham home shirt from mid 90s I think. Didn't usually have names on them.

What is your first ever memory of playing Abbey Hey if so who and why? If you could bring 3 PL players to Abbey football? Do you remember the first game Hey on a free transfer, who would you sign It was Nelson away and I managed to score quite you played in? Or the first goal you ever and why? scored? early on in the game First game was under 9s and we won 10-1 .. first goal I remember was a free kick for my school team.

If you was to pick any player in any position to play with and why? Brazilian Ronaldo, was ridiculously good when I had just started playing football properly

Who would you say has been the best opposition to come to Abbey Hey this season, and who has been the toughest to play against within your time here?

If you could pick one team for Abbey Hey to come up against in a friendly, which team would you want to go up against?

What is the last thing you do before you walk out onto the pitch prior to kick off?

We found it tough against Runcorn Town this Don't really have a set thing other than everyone season, very organised and well drilled side. Also goes round and shakes hands had a couple of tough games against Padiham.

What is your Favourite ground that you What is your favourite celebration when you score a goal? What is the best celebra- have played at? tion you’ve ever seen? I have played at Boundary Park (Oldham's I don't score many so usually just go for the Alan Shearer arm raised

Messi, Suarez and Ronaldo. Would make life pretty easy for the rest of our team.

What is your expectations from Rest off season and where would like us to finish at end of season?

Hopefully we can kick on and beat the record ground) a few times in school and Sunday league points total we set last year and beat the 10th finals which was good. Also played at the old placed finish we had last year. Wembley in a school tournament when I was Prediction for the game? young.

If you could change one rule in the game, what would it be and why?

Make the offside rule more simple. It's harder for Barcelona, just to see how good they are up defenders now to play an offside line as you close would be amazing.. might even get a touch don't always know who is interfering with play. of the ball at some stage!

There has been goal at Abbey Hey this sea- If you were to play in a 5 a side team with son, what is the mentality behind the any 4 players of your choice, past or preteam? sent, who would you pick and why? Gibbo likes us to play good football and express Ronaldo, Messi, zidane, Maldini ourselves but main thing is that we work as hard as possible and earn the right to play.

Abbey Hey win and a clean sheet would be a bonus.

ABBEY HEY 3 SQUIRES GATE 1 SATURDAY 23RD JANUARY 2016 The home side made a much better start to the game than Gate who looked leggy and lacking sharpness. They could have opened the scoring after just five minutes but Ben Fletcher did well to turn the ball round the post. From the resulting corner one of the home defenders up for the set piece, put the ball over the cross bar from around 5 yards out. Gates luck wouldn’t last much longer as on the 9th minute the home side found the net. Murray the man to react quickest and prod the ball in from close range after the corner. Sub Ryan Tanser, on for an injured Mark Buchan, almost got lucky down the other end. He nearly flicked the ball in the back of the net from the corner but the lob was cleared before Nathan Trout’s header fell into the arms of the keeper. The home side would make it two on 27 minutes when Gates defence seemed to freeze during the corner. The ball cannoning off the cross bar from Jones before Murray grabbed his second of the game finishing Noon’s knocked down ball. All whilst Gates defence seemed to stand and watch. Billy McKenna had Gates best chance of the first half and arguably the game in the 32nd minute when he was sent through one on one but under pressure fired his shot over the bar. Gate showed signs of improvement after the half time break and bossed the first 10 minutes of the half. The home sides first chance of the half forced a good save from Fletcher to tip it over the bar. Gate’s good start would be rewarded with a goal after 55 minutes. The ball fired into the middle of the goal found its way to the back post where manager Danny Penswick was waiting to tap in to grab a goal back. The homeside looked nervy after conceding though Gate couldn’t really take advantage of the nerves. Though Gate tried to play their normal passing game they couldn’t seem to control the ball and often surrendered possession very easily. Abbey Hey would make it 3-1 late on into the game. Ben Fletcher caught out of his goal to clear up field was beat to the ball by Hey sub Collins. The ball falling to fellow sub Sam Hind who curled the ball over a retreating Fletcher to secure the three points for the home side when gate looked most threatening

SQUIRES GATE 0 ABBEY HEY 0 SATYURDAY 2ND APRIL 2016 Riley wouldn't have to wait long before his introduction though. Mark Buchan pulling his groin after 20 minutes meant Riley would be put to use. Before then Gate had started well with Buchan being involved throughout. Billy McKenna had several chances in the first 10 minutes but perhaps took a touch too many before passing or shooting, allowing the Hey defender to win the ball. The visitors first chance of the game came after 8 minutes but good work by Ryan Tanser to track back out the winger off who shot wide. Recently subbed Ryan Riley had his first chance of the game since coming on when he almost chipped the Abbey Hey keeper. Almost an instant impact from the sub in his first piece of action of they year, but the ball dropped the wrong side of the post.Abbey Hey had their best spell of the game in a mad five minutes. First their winger had a shot easily saved from Woods. Then the visitors had four continuous corners to worry Gate before George Noon finally fired wide. The last chance of the half came to Gate and was probably their best of the first half. The referee stopping play for a pass back to Abbey Hey's keeper which was picked up. But unfortunately the direct free kick came to nothing for Gate and the ref blew for half time. The away side started the better side in the second half with Ashford Blake cutting in off the right hand side before shooting wide. Great play from Joe Noblet set up Gates next chance. His ball across the pitch to find Billy McKenna in space and to send him clear on goal but they Abbey Hey defender did well to recover and clear. Gate had three clear chances to open the scoring on 70 minutes which were their best of the game. First Josh Westwood hit the bar with a header. Then Nathan Trout had a shot cleared off the line before Ryan Riley's scrambled effort was cleared. Three easy chances missed for Gate. Gate had Josh Woods to thank after 74 minutes when he did well to save an effort from Sam Hind at the near post. Gate could have won the game late on with a late free kick. But Ryan Riley's free kick cannoned straight off the wall in the 90th minute.

JANAUARY REVIEW Mark Ashmore looks back on the month of January where Gate only played two games due to postponements and picked up 3 points from their win at home to Cammell Laird, before losing 2-1 at home to Maine Road.

January saw Danny Penswick's men pick up three points from two games in a frustrating start to the year. The weather finally caught up with Gate after a clear December, with two of the four games called off. The month kicked off with the news that our School Road ground would be renamed in hour of club stalwart Brian Addison. Brian or Taddy as he's affectionately known has volunteered at the club for over 50 years in very role imaginable. Since making his debut for the club at a very young age, Taddy has gone on to fill several roles to a high standard, currently taking care of the pitch. He's won several awards for his efforts with the pitch and takes great pride in doing so. With spirits high around the newly named ground and after drawing late against top of the league last Saturday, Gate faced bottom of the league Cammell Laird 1907. Lairds hadn't won a game all season, only picking up six points from six draws. Manager Danny Penswick was able to name an unchanged side from the week before's impressive draw at top of the league Runcorn Town. He was also able to welcome back Alexander, Gibson, Noblet and Moxon to the bench in what are all strong options. Gate made the prefect start to the game after four minutes. Seydou Bamba had partnered Brett Dawson up top for the second half of the Runcorn Town game and did so for the start of this game. The versatile Bamba was found with an inch perfect pass between the left back and centre back to find his run. He then cleverly lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper into the bottom corner. The game then became a strange one with both teams having chances but neither being able to make the break through. The second half could have seen Lairds score an equaliser on 55 minutes. A cross fired across the six yard box was missed by everybody, luckily for Gate Jake Higham was able to clear the ball at the right angle avoiding turning the ball into his own net. With Lairds coming back into the game and putting the pressure on Gate, the homeside would need another goal to secure the win. That would come through striker Brett Dawson. Sub Joe Noblet played a beautiful ball to find the run of Dawson, the striker took the ball in his stride, gave the onrushing keeper the eyes, and rounded him to slot home. The win moved Gate upto 13th in the league into a tight midtable position, just one point off 11th place. The following Saturday saw Gate's tip to AFC Darwen called off on Saturday morning. Perhaps the weeks rest due to the postponement had more of an effect on Gate than first imagined. Gate had gone four games unbeaten and momentum was looking key to that. Defeat to Maine Road ended that spell in what was a frustrating game for Gate. New signing Matt Mahoney came into the team with Paul Alexander coming into the defence. It was Gate that took the lead in this game after captain Andrew Richards was hacked down in the box. Brett Dawson then stepped up to convert the penalty right into the top corner. The lead would only last 16 minutes when the visitors equalised. A weak back pass left Joe Griffith in net with too much to do and allowed Maine Road midfielder Connor Hughes in to get the ball first and slot past Griffith. Another mistake by Gate allowed in Maine Road again who capitalised well on both mistakes. A mix up in defence allowed Jamie Roe in to give Road the lead three minutes before half time. The second half would be all Gate who looked to find a way through a resolute Maine Road defence. Gate saw plenty of the ball and created several chances but just couldn't find a way through. A frustrating afternoon for Gate continued through onto the next Saturday when Gate's home game against Winsford United was called off. Danny Penswick: “January has been a frustrating month for SGFC. After a positive end to 2016 I'd hoped we'd be given the opportunity to build on this and really get into a good place in terms of performances and results. Unfortunately with the recent weather it's been a stop start kind of month. Of the 4 games scheduled we only managed 2, which resulted in 1 win and 1 defeat. Our first game of the month was at home to Cammell Laird where we recorded solid 2-0 victory. From our perspective it was a no win game. We were expected to win and anything less would have been a disappointment. I was actually impressed with Lairds and thought they showed a lot of spirit despite their position. They got the ball down and played some good stuff. We could have played better and I felt we we're quite one paced in attack which is very unlike us. Nevertheless a win is a win and we we're happy with our start to 2017. Two weeks later after a postponement at AFC Darwen we faced Maine Road in what ended up a 2-1 defeat. I wouldn't have said either side did enough to win the game, yes that was deserved by Maine Road just edged it. Its games like this that have disappointed me most this season. We consistently seem to come out on the wrong end of tight games and this needs to change."

GATE HOTSHOT SOWERBY ON TARGET TO SEAL ALL 3 POINTS SQUIRES GATE 1 WEST DIDSBURY & CHOLTON 0 SATURDAY 8TH FEBRUARY 2014

It was the visitors very first visit to the Royal British Legion Stadium, and both teams were unsure of each other, having never met before, but it was the home side that took the game to the visitors, and had an early chance with a 30yard shot from Craig Carney, saved brilliantly by Paul Hughes in goal, he flung himself at full stretch to tip the ball for a corner. Then Callum Cooke, broke free of his marker, to put in a shot, but the keeper was able to save. The visitors who at start of play were 8 places above Gate, made runs into the home defence, and Mark Woodcock who had come on as a sub. beat Gate’s defenders and hit the crossbar from 30 yards. But it was the home side who looked the most likely to open the scoring, until, the final 15 mins of the half when the wind increased in strength, and the rain drenched the surface, making the visitors defending more difficult to clear the ball up field, knocking at least 10yards off the length of a clearance kick by their keeper, than was possible at the start of the game. This was of no help to the home side, even with the wind in their favour, control became a lottery, and passes went beyond the forwards. So both teams must have been frustrated at half time, with little to show for great efforts. The second half showed no let up by both teams, and the relentless strong wind and rain, making it look as though neither side was going to get ahead, but on 63 mins Jack Sowerby, picked up the ball on the right wing near the half way line, he just powered his way forward outpacing his marker, who when they entered the penalty area, tried to pull back Gate’s leading scorer with a hand on his shoulder, which seemed to give the striker the signal to shoot, and he hammered the ball past Paul Hughes who was helpless against the pile driver, for a worthy match winning goal. Gate brought on fresh legs in the form of Ryan Riley, for Jack Hindle. But for the last ten minutes of the game, the conditions were becoming so bad, that some of the home fans were worried that the game might be stopped. But the pitch stood up to the test of the weather, which was testimony to the loving care of award winning groundsman Brian Addison. The last kick of the ball brought a great save from Home keeper Dave Rodgerson, who managed to get across to push the ball away to safety, and the ref blew for time.

In our regular feature, we take a look back on this week in football history. `

GEOGRAPHICALLY SPEAKING, IT WAS THE RIGHT RESULTS

2011

On 29 January 2011, Japan won their fourth Asian Cup, beating Australia with an extra-time goal from substitute striker Tadanari Lee. It was only the second Asian Cup for Australia, who previously played in the Oceania Football Confederation. In 2006, they switched to the Asian confederation in the hope that the stronger competition there would improve their World Cup fortunes by improving their team. They took their first crack at the Asian Cup in 2007, but fell to Japan on penalties in the first knockout round. Japan, meanwhile, were old hands in the competition, winning it in 1992, 2000, and 2004. They played the final before a crowd of 37,174 at the Khalifa International Stadium in the Qatari capital of Doha. Although it featured two of the tournament's top scorers in Australia's Harry Kewell and Japan's Ryoichi Maeda, goals proved difficult to find. At the end of regulation, the match remained stuck in a scoreless draw. In the first period of extra time, Japan manager Alberto Zaccheroni subbed Lee in for Maeda. Lee had made only one other appearance in the tournament, coming on for Maeda in the 46th minute of Japan's opening match against Jordan, and had not scored a goal. But he rewarded Zaccheroni's faith by scoring from a cross in the 109th minute. Japan held on for the remainder of the match to claim the cup.

WILL THE REAL LUTHER BLISSETT PLEASE STAND UP

On 1 February 1958, Luther Blissett, who holds the Watford records for appearances and goals, was born in Jamaica. The striker, who moved to England at a young age, joined Watford's youth team in 1974, then signed a professional contract with the Fourth Division side one year later. His first two seasons were unremarkable, but he began scoring at a rapid pace in the 1977-78 season and helped Watford climb the league table all the way to the First Division by 1982. That season in the top flight--the club's first--was Blissett's best with a total of 27 goals in 41 appearances. His performance caught the eye of Italian giants AC Milan, who signed him in June 1983 for £1M. But his form remained in England and he scored only six times in 39 appearances across all competitions before Milan sold him back to Watford for £550,000 in the summer of 1984. He remained there for another four years, then moved to Bournemouth for three seasons before returning to Watford for a third and final time. By the time he left again in 1992, he had set club records for appearances (503) and goals (183). He retired 1994 after brief spells with Bury and Mansfield Town and also made a total of 14 appearances for England. In 1994, a group of political and cultural activists in Italy adopted Blissett's name as a collective pseudonym for a series of pranks, saying "anyone can be Luther Blissett simply by adopting the name Luther Blissett." Use of the name quickly spread across Europe and the United States and was attached to a variety of activities, including one novel written under Blissett's name. The real Luther Blissett joked about participating, but is not actually a part of the project.

CORINTHIANS GET TOLIMA TAKE-DOWN On 2 February 2011, Brazilian giants Corinthians were dumped out of the Copa Libertadores in the first round by Colombian side Deportes Tolima. The two sides met over two legs and played the first one to a scoreless draw in São Paulo on 26 January. One week later, they reconvened at Tolima's Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro to decide the contest. There, playing before a crowd of 15,000 the hosts took control of the match early and were denied a quick lead only by the brilliant play of Corinthians goalkeeper Júlio César and the referee's decision not to award what looked like a certain penalty for an 18th-minute foul by Corinthians in the box. Corinthians did better in the second half, getting a great chance in the 50th minute with a powerful blast from striker Ronaldo (pictured), but Tolima keeper Anthony Silva managed to parry it. They then fell victim to a controversial goal on a Tolima counterattack in the 66th minute when forward Danny Santoya beat César after getting the ball in a marginally offside position. Tolima's second goal left no room for doubt, however, as unmarked striker Wilder Medina connected on a cross and headed the ball home. The 2-0 loss continued Corinthians' frustration in the tournament, which they have never won. Tolima advanced to the group stage, but were eliminated there.
