Saturday 21st April 2018 // The Brain Addison Stadium // Attendance:80 Gate could have opened the scoring ten minutes into the Half Time: Squires Gate 0-0 Hanley Town first half with some clever football. Gary Pett laying the ball back to Dean Ing from Ryan Charnley's cross but Ing's shot could only find Pett and didn't test the keeper. The away side started the second half with calls for a penalty, but the shouts were ignored by the referee Gary Pett then got in two good attacking positions for who played on. Gate would finally make the break Gate. First he beat the offside trap but could only fire wide when he got into the box, then he headed a corner through after 51 minutes. Ryan Charnley’s shot falling to Max Rothwell who made no mistake to stroke the back into the box but nobody in Blue could meet the header. The visitors had a good chance after 30 minutes ball past the keeper to give Gate the lead. Another end to end moment saw both teams go close in a short but Thompson's knockdown could only fall to Gate's space of time. First Gate denied Hanley with a fine keeper. Ryan Charnley and Gary Pett again linked up as save before both Ryan Charnley and Dean Ing were the game headed to half time Pett playing a lovely ball denied by two great saves. Scott Harries went close across the pitch to find Charnley but he fired over after cutting inside. Hanley had the last chance of the first half with one of Gates last chances of the second half, but his shot was well saved by the Hanley keeper. testing Gate twice in quick succession. First a fine save from the keeper denied them before a goal line clearance meant the game went into half time level.

THE BOSS
MARK PATTERSON Mark made over 650 games as a professional scoring 70 goals and playing over 100 games as a midfielder for Blackburn Rovers. He also played for a number of other North West clubs including Bolton Wanderers. He went on to play, and then to manage, in non-League football including Chorley, Darwen and Leigh RMI. He has managed at Scarborough and was assistant manager at Hednesford Town. Born and bred in Darwen Mark is relishing the challenge to restore some of the former glory to the club using his wide experience and knowledge of the game. Mark is a qualified UEFA ‘A’ Licence coach, and has attended the FA Managers and Coaches course coaching at the Bolton Wanderers Academy and at Wigan Athletic. His wealth of experience also extends to having been first team coach at Accrington Stanley. Club Secretary Elaine Littler said ‘we are delighted to have Mark at the club. Mark is already assembling a squad of players to build on the last two seasons in the North West Counties Premier League.
BREIF HISTORY At the end of the 2008/2009 season Darwen Football Club ceased to exist after the club was wound up due to bad debts. One of the previous owners had systematically destroyed the club financially but, also discredited its reputation within the town which resulted in lower attendances and a reduction in the number of volunteers that gave up their valuable time to help keep the club running. With debts in excess of £60.000 it was inevitable that the club could not survive; fortunately the team managed to fulfil all of their fixtures in the 2008/09 season before the club was wound up. It was decided that Darwen still had the desire to field a town team, and although various people had left the club; meetings began to take place to discuss the future of Darwen Football Club. Derek Slater, former club secretary and reserve team manager of Darwen FC, had already set the ball rolling by forming AFC Darwen, a not for profit organisation. The lease was then secured back from the local council and AFC Darwen rose from the ashes. At the end of the 2009/10 season AFC Darwen gained re-election back into the North West Counties Football League after achieving the required ground grading standards to compete at that level. The main aim of the club back in the NWCFL was to steady the ship and cement their place in the league. AFC Darwen finished 13th,, with a record of 9 wins, 10 draws and 12 defeats, goals scored 37, conceded. 62. A respectable position for their first season. During the close season before the start of the 2012/13 campaign the structure of the club changed. Due to personal reasons and business commitments Derek Slater decided that he could no longer run both the senior and junior sides. It was decided that Kenny Langford would become the sole director of AFC Darwen; the structural change resulted in Kenny taking over the day to day running of the club, and the responsibility for the first and reserve teams. This allowed Derek the time to focus on the development of the junior teams within the club. The changes helped the club the move forward more positively “not only on the pitch, but also on the development of the ground. AFC Darwen finished 5th, with a record of 20 wins, 3 draws and 11 defeats, goals scored 79, conceded 57. AFC also reached the semi-final of the 1st division trophy. The 2013/14 season proved to be disappointing for the first team, finishing 9th, with a record of 15 wins, 7 draws and 14 defeats, goals scored 64, conceded 64. However they had successful cup runs; yet again reaching the semi-final of the first division trophy. They also reached the semi-final of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy narrowly losing to Chorley. This was a major achievement with AFC Darwen being the first club at North West Counties league level to reach a semi-final in such a prestigious competition. The reserves under the leadership of Mathew Pilkington won the clubs first silverware by winning the reserve division cup; beating Irlam on penalties after the tie finished at 2-2 after extra-time. It was also decided that for the club to progress the youth teams would have to be fully amalgamated to the club and play under the same L.F.A. Registration as the first and reserve teams At the start of the 2014/15 campaign, not many could have predicted just how incredible the season would turn out to be. AFC Darwen got off to a good start and looked to be one of the favourites to gain promotion, however with the team competing well in the cup competitions and the weather starting to play havoc with the fixtures, Darwen soon found themselves with a mountain to climb. The club was dealt another blow when Kenny stepped down as manager due to personal reasons. "At least the majority of players remained at the club" Nick Lloyd took over as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. Although one or two players left Nick managed to strengthen the squad, and he also promoted players from the reserves. The club policy of fielding a reserve team proved pivotal towards the success of the first team at the latter stages of the season due to injuries and suspensions. After beating Ashton Town in the First Division Cup Semi-Final at the end of March, Darwen embarked on a mammoth 9 league games in just 20 days, winning 8 and drawing 1. This herculean achievement pushed the team into third place and

TUESDAY 30TH AUGUST 2016
Squires Gate welcomed winless bottom of the league AFC Darwen to School Road on Tuesday night Gate looking to get back to winning ways after their first loss of the season on Saturday. Gate made a superb start to the game and took the lead after 20 seconds! A pass back to the keeper trickled under his foot, he did well to recover but his clearence went straight to the feet of Ric Seear who slotted Gate into the lead! Not two minutes later Darwen would equalise. They broke forward from the kick off and equalised. Then it was Gate turn. A minute later Gate took the lead again. Ryan Tanser sent through the middle to easily finish. Gate were forced to make a sub just before half time burning Joe Noblet off who picked up a knock. This gave Manager Danny Penswick the chance to change his system which saw Gate control the game more. The second half also saw a change for Gate with Brett Dawson coming off who also picked up a knock. AFC Darwen would take the lead after 58 minutes. Gate lacklustre at the back allowed Darwen in

Neither team could convert their chances in a tight first half, Andrew Richards blocking a Darwen shot before Ben Seear fired wide from outside the box at the other end. The best chance of the half fell to the hosts, when Gate switched off at a throw and were lucky to see a header flash wide. Gate had a chance of their own before the break but Corey Moorhead’s shot at the back-post was blocked for a corner. The major turning point arrived 10 minutes into the second half, when Tarren Moxon’s header for Gate was cleared off the line and Darwen raced to the other end to break the deadlock. A break down the right and a low cross was finished by Nick Hepple. The second followed five minutes later, when Conor Gaul was allowed too much space to cross from the bye-line for Bobby Langford to tap in at the near post. And it was 3-0 on 65 minutes, when Hepple fired home his second from outside the box.

Thursday APRIL 2018/ WEC Group Stadium /Attendance: 37 Darwen had good chances to get something from this game tonight, but circumstances again did not run for them. A disallowed free kick goal, a bad facial injury to the first choice goalkeeper, and a sending off put paid to the home side’s chances. Adam Monk was making his debut for the first team in this game. After a subdued midfield contest, the first chance of the night fell to the home side as a ball put Sidi Fofana through. His first shot was blocked by keeper Jonathan McIlwaine, the ball rebounded back to him, but Sidi fired his second effort over the bar. With three minutes of the half to go, an Abbey free kick was latched onto by Peter Watling, but Darwen keeper James Whittingham sprinted off his line quickly to block the forward’s shot.
Half Time: AFC Darwen 0 Abbey Hey 0
Within a minute of the restart, Darwen substitute Jamie Edwards just missed getting a foot to deflect a free kick floated in, with the ball ending up in the keeper’s arms. Three minutes later, as James Whittingham again dashed out to stop Watling, he was accidentally kicked in the face, resulting in a possible broken nose. After several minutes of treatment, he was helped off the field and substituted. Shortly after this, Abbey Hey took the lead. A ball from the back found Ashford Blake, who got behind the Darwen defence to slide the ball past the substitute keeper. Just after the hour, the visitors were close again when a ball ran out twenty five yards to Matthew Cook, whose dipping shot went over the keeper’s head but smashed against the crossbar. There was another long delay when referee Paul Roots picked up an injury and had to 01 JAMES WHITTINGHAM 01 JONATHAN MCLLWAINE have treatment, but continued with his ankle strapped up. A 02 KARL TURNER 02 ROBERT SWALLOW Karl Turner free kick found Nick Hepple in the box, where 03 CALLUM HOCTOR 03 MATTHEW COOK his header was pushed over the bar by McIlwaine, but Dar04 DANIEL BANKS 04 LEE WILSHAW wen were then reduced to ten men when Callum Hoctor was given a straight red for a foul. With fifteen minutes of 05 MARTIN PARKER 05 ANDREW SHAW normal time to go, the Darwen keeper made a good stop to 06 RYAN MCKEENA 06 LEWIS HAYDOCK deny Adam Farrand, but from the resulting corner, defender 07 SIDI FOFANA SANOGO 07 PETER BOYLE Lee Wilshaw headed home at the far post. Five minutes lat08 RYAN STEELE 08 ASHFORD BLAKE er, the home side was awarded a free kick on the edge of 09 NICHOLAS HEPPLE 09 PETER WALTING the box. NWCFL NEWS A cup semi final second leg and games affecting the top and bottom of both divisions provided a fascinating mix of weekend results, as we head towards the business end of the season. In the Macron Cup Semi Final 2nd Leg at Victoria Park, Burscough booked their place in the final with a 3-0 win over Irlam, winning by the same score on aggregate. Goals from Peter Henerty and Chad Whyte in the opening 22 minutes put the Linnets in the driving seat, and Terry Cummings added a third in the 65th minute. In the Premier Division, leaders Runcorn Linnets had no game, but Widnes kept their winning run going with a 4-0 win over Northwich Victoria at the Select Security Stadium on Friday Night The game was over by the 27th minute after Ben Hodkinson, George Lomax and Kevin Pollard had put Widnes three up, and Christopher Lomax added a fourth just after half time. Widnes remain in second place ten points behind Linnets, and three points ahead of Runcorn Town having played a game more, after Town's 1-1 draw at Charnock Richard. Town rescued a point with a last minute equaliser from Craig Cairns, after Carl Grimshaw had given Charnock the lead on 16 minutes. The results mean that Runcorn Linnets now need two wins from their remaining five games to clinch the title. 1874 Northwich are the other club who could still mathematically catch Linnets at the top, although that now looks increasingly unlikely after their 2-1 defeat at West Didsbury & Chorlton. Scott McGowan gave the Greens the lead early in the second half, but former 1874 striker Tom Bailey levelled for West before Ashley Woods struck an 80th minute winner. City of Liverpool kept up their recent good form with an 8-0 win over AFC Darwen, with Anthony Brown, John McGrath and Thomas Peterson all on target twice for the Purps. The win keeps them in fourth place, three points ahead of Hanley Town who lost 1-0 at Squires Gate to a Max Rothwell goal in the 54th minute. Bootle are fifth after they edged past Congleton Town by the odd goal in seven in a thriller at the Richborough Estates Stadium. Goals from Liam Loughton, Andrew Gillespie, Ryan Cox and Kevin Edgar sealed the win for the Bucks. Two goals from Joe Duckworth helped Winsford United to a 2-1 win over Padiham at the St Lukes Barton Stadium, and at the bottom of the table the battle to avoid relegation continues. Abbey Hey are six points clear of the drop zone although they didn't do themselves any favours by going down 2-0 at home to Barnoldswick Town. After a goalless first half, a Zack Dale penalty broke the deadlock before Ben Gorman wrapped up the points for Barlick with a second goal. AFC Liverpool also dropped three crucial points, going down 1-0 to already relegated Barnton on Friday night. Owen Dursley's goal means the Reds are just above the drop zone on goal difference ahead of Maine Road, who picked up what could turn out to be a priceless three points with a 1-0 win at Ashton Athletic. Ben Davison scored the all important goal for Road in the 21st minute at Brocstedes Park. In Division One, Silsden AFC now need six points from their remaining four games to clinch the title after a 1-0 win at Whitchurch Alport. A goal in the 50th minute from Niall Sultan moved the Cobbydalers three points ahead of Litherland REMYCA , who lost 3-2 at home to AFC Blackpool. Billy McKenna gave the visitors a 12th minute lead, but goals from Alex Ryan and Marvin Molyneux saw Remy ahead at the break. But Ben Duffield levelled midway through the second half, and Alex Gaunce stunned the home side with a winner in the 85th minute for AFC Blackpool, a result that keeps their hopes of clinching a play-off place alive. Prestwich Heys guaranteed their play off place with a 4-0 win at Nelson, Lee Bruce Grabbing a hat trick for Heys to deliver a result which also sent the Admirals to the bottom of the table. Sandbach United are fifth after a 3-0 win at Bacup Borough, with Ryan Cattermole, James Kirby and Stuart Tulloch on target, and Alsager Town occupy the final play off place although they fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat at home to Daisy Hill. Saul Guffogg and Danny Warburton gave a Daisy a two goal half time lead, and although Taylor Attrell reduced the arrears late on, the visitors held on to secure a win that moved them off the bottom of the table. Cammell Laird 1907 moved to within two points of Alsager after being held to a 0-0 draw at home to New Mills, and Holker Old Boys' hopes of a play off were dented by a 5-3 home defeat to Eccleshall. Louis Downs and Daniel Needham both netted twice for the Eagles. Ben Halfacre and Jesurun Uchegbulam both

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.
A Club Of Olympic Proportions
1925
Olympiacos formed from the merger of two other clubs and have since become Greece's most successful team with a record 44 league titles. The two previous clubs, both based in Piraeus, dissolved in order to create a unified club for the area, which took the name Olympiacos Syndesmos Filathlon Piraios ("Olympiacos Club of Fans of Piraeus") and chose red and white as their colors. The first Greek national league began competition with the 1927-28 season and Olympiacos quickly became the country's dominant club, winning their first title in 1931 and taking five more in the next seven seasons. They have won multiple titles in each decade, including an impressive run starting in 1997 that has seen them win all but two of the league titles since then (they finished as runners-up in 2004 and 2010). They have also won a record 27 Greek Cups. They have a strong rivalry with Panathinaikos, known as the Derby of the Eternal Enemies. Olympiacos have had the better of it, winning 80 games to 50 for Panathinaikos, with 67 draws.
Drogba Rising
1978
Didier Drogba was born in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. He went on to become one of the world's dominant strikers. Growing up, he spent many years living in France and it was there he started his professional career, joining the youth program at Levallois in 1996, then moving to Le Mans in 1997. In 1998, he signed a professional contract with Le Mans and played there for three and a half years, scoring a total of only 15 goals in 75 appearances before moving to Guingamp for £80,000 in the winter transfer window. The move sparked his career. In his first full season there, he scored 21 goals, attracting the interest of Marseille who signed him for £3.3M in the summer 2003. After only one remarkable season at Marseille, in which he scored 32 goals across all competitions and was named the Ligue 1 Player of the Year, he moved again, this time to Chelsea who paid £24M. In eight seasons with Chelsea, he scored 157 goals in 341 appearances, making him the fourth-highest goalscorer in club history. He also collected a massive haul of silverware, including three league titles, four FA Cups, and one Champions League trophy. Along the way, he also captained the Côte d'Ivoire national team and is their all-time leading scorer with 65 goals in 104 appearances. After leaving Chelsea at the end of his contract in 2012, he spent time with Shanghai Shenhua (2012-13) and Galatasaray (2013-14) before returning to Chelsea for the 2014-15 season. He then played for the Montreal Impact (2015-16) before joining his current club, Phoenix Rising, as player-owner in 2017.
Revenge, Arsenal Style Arsenal recorded their record league victory, a 12-0 win over Loughborough Town. The match was a Second Division contest played at Arsenal's Manor Ground in Plumstead, southeast London. Arsenal, who were known at the time as Woolwich Arsenal, had beaten Loughborough 2-3 away nine days earlier, but the teams had some history--Loughborough had handed them their record league defeat, an 8-0 away loss, in December 1896. Since then, Arsenal hired manager manager Harry Bradshaw, who took over in August 1899 and began to improve the club's fortunes. Bradshaw was on the sideline at the Manor Ground on 12 March when Arsenal got their revenge by pounding Loughborough 12-0. As it turned out, that was Loughborough's last season in the league. They finished dead last in the table and were not re-elected in the spring, then financial woes forced their dissolution later that year. The win matched Arsenal's overall record, set in an FA Cup match against Ashford United in 1893, but was beaten by a friendly against a Paris XI in 1904, which Arsenal won 26-1. But the 12-0 victory over Loughborough remains their largest league win.

Unfortunately for Gate they couldn't capitalise with the delivery too heavy. From the following goal kick the homeside registered their first chance. Mike Hall cutting out the pass into the box before a curling shot from outside the box was fired narrowly wide. Gate then had two chances in quick succession. First Ric Seear was sent clear through but home keeper Tom Hunt did well to save the one on one. From the resulting Freekick Gate came close again but defender Paul Carroll's header was over the bar.Gate the had a succession of corners but couldn't capitalise from either. First Joe Noblets corner had too much curl on it and went out for a goal kick. Then a minute later Noblet tried again but Linnets did well to scramble the ball away. Gate would then make the break through and finally find the back of the net. Left back Jake Higham getting forward to send a lovely low ball across the face of goal found a Linnets defender who could only put the ball in his own net with Ric Seear putting pressure on him. It was then Linnets with the next chance as they tried to find a goal back in the game. A corner was cleared by Andrew Richards on the post before Ben Fletcher saved the returning shot. Gate defended well again a couple of minutes later again from a corner. This time the corner was taken short but was easily cleared by Paul Carroll completed the clearance. Linnets would eventually make their pressure count and equalised in the 37th minute. A cross played into the box was scrambled in by big striker Mark Houghton to score his 15th goal of the season. But as quickly as Linnets equalised, Gate would take the lead again. Some twin magic from the Seear twins when Ric Seear went down the byline and crossed into the back post to find his brother and twin, Ben to volley in. It would be Seear again who add his and Gate's second 10 minutes into the second half. Ryan Riley's shot parried into the feet of Ben Seear# who made no mistake to grab his second of the game. Linnets grabbed a goal of their own back on 62 minutes. Paul Carroll penalised for a trip in the box, Linnets captain Kyle Hamid stepped up to convert the spot kick for his 15th goal of the season. Both teams still had their chances in the next 10 minutes but it would be again Linnets who would grab another goal to level the game. Kristian Holt tapping in at the back post to complete the comeback. Some teams would be happy with a 3-3 comeback but Linnets went one better. Sub Stuart Wellstead firing low past Fletcher who wasn't at fault for any of the goals.
