FROM THE DUGOUT

DANIEL PENSWICK LOOKING AHEAD TO THE QUICK TURNAROOUND OF GAMES, THE GAFFER FEELS THAT THE TEAM WILL BE ABLE TO GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS TONIGHT... Good evening everyone, Tonight we welcome AFC Darwen to the Royal British Legion Stadium in what I expect to be another cracking NWCFL game. After the 4-3 thriller against Bootle last Tuesday and the narrow 3-2 defeat to Congleton I'm sure we'll see another goal feast tonight. First of all I’d like to welcome the AFC Darwen fans, committee and players to Squires Gate and I hope you enjoy your time here.

“I’m sure we’ll see another goal feast tonight” The way I want us to play means that we'll concede but with our strike force I'd back us to out score anyone at this level. To go to a team like Congleton, dominate the game, miss countless opportunities and still be disappointed with the result shows the standards we've set for ourselves so far this season. The game against Bootle showed that we can be ruthless in front of goal and we have taken big steps from last year.

“We’ll concede but with our strike force I’d back us to outscore anyone” I still want better and I'll be driving that into the lads come tonight's game. There are still improvements to be made, and I said that after last week’s game. After missing a few key players on Saturday Ben Fletcher, Mike Hall, Ben Seear and Stinger all return and are in contention. With 17 players all fighting for a starting berth and the FA Cup 1st Qualifying round on Saturday it's an exciting time to be around the club. Talking about the FA Cup, I’m really looking forward to hosting Handsworth Paramore on Saturday. The lads are working hard so I’m positive that we are capable of progressing further which would really set the standards for the rest of the season.

“After missing key players on Saturday, they are all back and in contention tonight.” Let's hope we put on another great attacking performance and get the all important 3 points. Up the Gate

Danny

Gate were forced into one change as Ben Seear came in for Mike Hall who was unavailable. Bootle made the better start to the game with some early possession but Gate stood strong and showed good determination not to jump in to rash challenges. For all the away sides possession though Gate took the lead after five minutes. It was the man who came into the starting line up how had the final touch in the box. Ben Seear tapping the ball in after a good corner from Noblet found him in the middle. Gate again sustained heavy pressure from Bootle but the away side couldn't find a way through. Dean Porter in net for Bootle did well to catch a Freekick from Gate but rushed the throw. The ball fell to Ric Seear who fed through Alex Mckendrick but his touch was heavy and the ball rolled out. The visitors would find an equaliser on 21 minutes. Penswick fouling a Bootle attacker just outside the box. Up stepped Steve Jones to our the ball into the bottom corner past Fletcher. Bootle would go on to score a second this time Jones grabbed his second of the game from a header into the box. Perhaps the best goal of the game came from Joe Noblet. He struck a superb Freekick from outside the box right into the top corner of the goal. Even a professional keeper would have struggled to save from the midfielder in form. As quickly as Gate scored the goal Bootle would equalise. Lethal striker Ryan Cox heading past Fletched just before the half time whistle. The second half saw a much better performance from Gate despite the two goals they scored first half. Gate would equalise on 57 minutes after a good start to the second half. The cross coming in from Jamie Gibson on the right found the head of Ric Seear to level the scores. The goal seemed to take something out of Bootle who's heads dropped. Though Gate had to call on Ben Fletcher in goal to save them as Bootle tried to find a winner. Fletch saving the ball which fell to Jones who in turn out the ball over the bar not expecting to get a second chance. The striker could have sealed his Hatrick but for Fletchers good save.

Gate would make the visitors pay with just five minutes left on the clock. A Freekick near the corner flag was fired in by Joe Noblet. The set piece found the head of Brett Dawson for the inform striker to glance a header into the bottom corner for his third in three games.

Gate could have been back in the game on six minutes. The returning Anthony Stayte linking up well with top goal scorer Ric Seear but Stayte’s touch was just a little too heavy and the home keeper did well to collect. It seemed to take Gate at least ten minutes to get into the game. They had some good possession in midfield but struggled to create clear chances. The more the game went on the better gate got though and got their reward for the turn around.

Joe Noblet delivering the corner into the near post, the ball cannoned off the crossbar and fell to Ric Seear who bundle the ball into the back of the net. As quick as Gate scored one they got back into the game and scored another! Ryan Tanser picking up the ball down the right hand side to drive forward. He looked up as he entered the box before picking his spot low into the bottom corner.

The second half started just as bad as the first for Gate. The homeside levelling the game just one minute into the second half. Gate caught starting the game slowly again, Nathan Haynes grabbing the goal. Ryan Tanser had the chance to put Gate ahead twice within the space of a minute. First Ric Seear did well to cut the ball back to Tanser on the penalty spot but he had more time than he thought and fired over. He then bought out the best of the home keeper. Tanser broke away from the defence and tried to slot the ball under the keeper’s legs but the keeper did very well to save with his feet. Gate’s best chance came on 61 minutes.

First the home sides keeper tipped the ball over the bar from Joe Noblet’s shot from the edge of the box. Then from the follow up corner fell to Alex Mckendrick’s feet in the box, but he couldn’t sort his feet out quick enough to get a shot away. The home side would win the game on 72 minutes. Striker Declan Fletcher left unmarked at the back post to take a touch and fire home to win the game for Congleton.

LATE DRAMA AT NEW MILLS AS GATE KNOCK OUT EVO STICK OPPOSITION NEW MILLS 2 SQUIRES GATE 3 Saturday 30th August 2014 Report by Mark Ashmore Squires Gate travelled to Evo-Stick North side New Mills AFC on the back of a poor display against Ashton Athletic on Tuesday night. Gate made two changes to the side from Tuesday night with Billy McKenna returning from injury and Brett Ferguson in the starting line up. Gate looked great from the kick-off as both sides jostled for possession, from Gate an early corner just missing Josh Westwood's head. Gate could have gone ahead with 15 minutes off the start, butBilly McKenna could only find the post which cruelly went out into safety. Later the home side appealed for a penalty but was turned down by the referee after the New Mills striker fell in the box.

Gate continued to attack and had a chance to open the scoring, when Jack Sowerby, jinking past two men before poking his shot just wide of the post. as the game wore on Gate who looked the brighter of the two sides were looking the more likely to score. Billy McKenna, who was troubling the home defence having a clear cut shot on 20 minutes which was blocked by the host’s solid defence and the ball was eventually cleared away to safety. Gate should have felt aggrieved not to be ahead having both the better chances and more of the ball. The home side opened the scoring though a ball floated in to the back post to be headed past Ben Fletcher, but the goal shouldn't really have stood netted by Mike Smith, when on 33 minutes with at least three New Mills players all clearly offside. The home side bossed proceedings at times most of the early stages of the first half, but Gate held and stood tall to prevent further setbacks.

Gate who looked to fight back after half time, Jack Sowerby involved in a good build up, play with Jack Cook but leading striker’s shot went sailing just over the bar. Unfortunately for the visitors New Mills doubled their lead, when in the 55th minute, Wes Bancroft picked up the ball and curled it into the back of the net. Gate almost got a goal back within a few minutes when the returningBilly McKenna crossed the ball which almost caught the keeper out, but the ball floated straight under the crossbar and out for a throw. Gate applying constant pressure on the home side’s goalmouth started to ping in chances, Josh Westwood up from the back latched onto a cross with a bullet header that left the home keeper flat footed and helpless to connect and found the back of the net, to bring Gate back in with a chance in the game.

Gate were in control and mounted a wave of attacks and after Sowerby and sub Ryan Riley worked some magic set pieces eventually led to a cleverly placed snap shot from Sowerby, but was sent just over the bar. As time wore on, Gate again were piling on the pressure, a loose ball from the home defence found the feet of Jake Forshaw who couldn't have struck the ball any sweeter, his drive found the bottom corner to equalise for the away side. Gate now looking full of confidence were all over the home side, a ball forward from the impressive Anderson in defence found makeshift striker Josh Westwood whose shot fell just wide of the post. Step forward Sam Dickinson who late on, the youngest member of the squad at 18, and a waiter by day, found the ball at the edge of the box to rifle the ball home to win the game late on for Squires Gate

On 22 December 2003 Carlsberg Tetley tried to wind up Darwen Football and Social Club. The club avoided liquidation on that occasion. On 14 April 2008 another winding up petition was brought by The Bee radio station in respect of £8000 owed for advertising. Plans were made for Blackburn with Darwen Council to buy the Anchor Ground. Following two further petitions for liquidation brought by Thwaites Brewery and ING Lease UK and their refusal of an offer of 25p in the pound, on 14 May 2009 Darwen Football Club was wound up in the High Court. The 134-year-old Darwen FC therefore ceased to exist. However, almost immediately, there were plans for a new Darwen football club to be formed. This was achieved before the start of the 2009–10 season as AFC Darwen, but the reformed club had to start at Step 7 (Level 11) of the football pyramid and apply for admission to the West Lancashire League, which was granted and they entered straight in at the Premier Division. AFC Darwen were elected back into the North West Counties League, Division One for season 2010–11. In the season of 2014/15 AFC Darwen were promoted to the North West Premier Division by winning the NWCFL Division One play off final 5-3 against Hanley Town in front of a crowd of 842 on 5 May 2015.

LAST TIME OUT

1874 NORTHWICH 3 AFC DARWEN 0 PREMIER DIVISION / BARTON STADIUM / SATURDAY 27TH AUGUST 2016 Coming of the back of a disappointing midweek FA Cup exit, 1874 had to prove a point against an arguably weaker AFC Darwen side. AFC Darwen started on the back foot as 1874 started with a fast tempo, taking the game to Darwen with Tom Bailey hitting a tame shot towards the keeper. It was a signal of intent from the hosts. Moments later, Eddie Moran won a corner for the greens, which found Wellstead, who glanced his header onto the crossbar. Darwen keeper Daniel Jackson pulled off some heroics to stop 1874 taking the lead with a curling effort from Tom Bailey which was heading to the top corner of his goal. HT 0-0. After a good first half defensive display from the visitors against a very strong 1874 front line., they continued to keep Northwich at bay. Bailey had an effort pushed away by Jackson which was then mopped up by his defensive line.

The hosts were now playing with a greater tempo, but just couldn’t finish their chances. Rick Bailey broke the deadlock after he lashed in a strike from the edge of the box.

With the wind in their sails, 1874 never looked back, as they added a second goal two minutes later with Scott McGowan being in the right place at the right time as he seized on an error from Jackson and sweeped the ball home. The result was put to bed on the 85th minute, McGowan turned inside the area as the ball broke his way and put the ball firmly out of reach of Jackson. A good defensive improvement from Darwen.

VIEW FROM THE AWAY END

MATTHEW MURPHY & ANDREW DAVIES

We spoke to Matthew Murphy and Andrew Davies and asked them to give us an insight on their thoughts for the upcoming season and the improvements that they think need to be made. Here is what they had to say;

What are your expectations for this season? What improvements do you think need to be made to improve on last seasons finish? After last season’s survival, I feel that we need to do exactly the same this year but I think it’s going to be a lot tougher. It’s fair to say after our awful start that we need a goalscorer otherwise we could be in a lot of trouble. This league has shown that if you don’t take your chances when you get them then you will be punished. How did your preseason go? Awfully. A bit disappointing but we need time to bed new players in then I feel that we can start to build on what we have an d it will show whether we are capable or not of staying in this division. Did any players impress you? Yes. Stuart Craig. Mr Composure. He’s going to play a big part this season. What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? Any grounds that you enjoy visiting? There’s a lot of grounds that I’m yet to visit in this league so I’m looking forward to ticking grounds of the list. I’m looking forward to a visit to New Mills though. Which players do you think will be the biggest threat to Gate? Karl Turner. Could play football at a much higher level. Any players that Gate fans should watch out for? If Danny Jackson is playing (goalkeeper) you could struggle putting the ball in the net. Really decent keeper. What has been the most memorable moment and game for you within your time watching AFC Darwen? Hands down it is when we went to watch AFC Darwen beat Atherton Colleries at the Delta Taxis stadium in Bootle to lift the Division One trophy two seasons back. Which players will be key for you this season? Karl Turner, Luke McKenna, Danny Jackson, Kiel Lonsdale If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign? Ryan Shawcross, Dimitri Payet and Sergio Aguero. We need goals. Have you been to Squires Gate before? No. This will be our first visit to Squires Gate. If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to pick 2 AFC players and 3 PL legends. Who would be in your side? Danny Jackson, John Terry, Karl Turner, Theirry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo Prediction for tonight’s game? 2-2

OPPOSITION WATCH Media man Mark Ashmore gives us a quick analysis on the players he thinks will be a danger to Gate for today’s game. Mark has picked a player out of every position and thinks they will all be a danger tonight for Gate. Keith Wedge is a solid defender, with ex Gate player being the creator in the middle of midfield. Jon McDonald is the striker that Mark thinks Gate will need to keep an eye on tonight.

KEITH WEDGE

JORDYN FITTON

JON MCDONALD

The experience Wedge usually plays left back. He is solid defensively with a good cross when he gets forward.

A former Gate player. Fitton played for the club briefly in Dave McCann’s first season as gaffer.

The forward looks to be AFC Darwen’s biggest threat so far this season.

Wedge has played at this level before for both Abbey Hey, Atherton Collieries and Ashton Athletic. He also lists Clitheroe and Altrincham on his football CV.

The winger has made the step up from playing in the first div for Atherton LR last season.

After the resignation of manager Paul Marriott, Adam Douglas took charge of AFC Darwen as interim manager. The skipper has been at the club for several years and has seen the club promoted from the First Division. His first task when he took over in April was to keep the club in the Premier Division and that’s what he done. He has had a tough start to the season, with his team only scoring one goal this campaign and being knocked out of the FA Cup. Having been a defender at the club, he will be sure to set his team up so they will be defensively solid for the rest of the season,

He’s played six games so far scoring once and picking up a man of the match .

GROUNDHOP DIARIES In our regular feature, we speak to groundhoppers all over the country, about what encouraged them to start their adventures. This week we spoke to Rob Waite, who has now visited countless grounds and has his own blog. Visit thepow66.blogspot.co.uk to check it out! First of all, what encouraged you to start your footballing adventures? My parents hated football... and I was a rebel! There was a lot of violence attached to a day out at the football, when I first started take an interest and they did everything imaginable to steer me away from having anything to do with the game. If I'd listened to them, I would've been a rich man by now, given how much money and time I've spent following football over the years, but I'm kind of resigned to the fact that I crossed the narrow dividing line between being an enthusiast and an obsessive a long time ago. I'm pretty sure that there will be people who watch Squires Gate who can relate to that sentiment. Back then they did TV documentaries about Manchester United's 'Red Army' and Millwall's 'F-Troop' and my dad thought that watching that sort of stuff might put me off... now I'm older and wiser, but that sort of stuff excited me no end at the time. My uncle took me to a few games at local league grounds and a few non league games that he actually played in, I became completely immersed in football culture, saving up all of my paper round money and going without school meals for weeks on end and pocketing the 'dinner money', to go on exotic trips to places like Middlesbrough, Edinburgh (Hearts not Hibs), London, Bristol... anywhere really. And along with the company I was keeping, we became adept at fare dodging. Ironically I work for the railways now. A lot of that stuff was real rites of passage stuff, but looking back it was character building get thumped on Leeds station, being kicked around a rainy car park in Wolverhampton or chased around the Bull Ring in Birmingham by penknife wielding Aston Villa skinheads (I'm still firm friends with the Birmingham City supporters who rescued me that day)... though it I was probably very lucky that I could still run quite quickly in those days. In this day and age I have to stand my ground, I'm not fit enough to even walk away at a brisk pace. Eventually we'd visited every league ground in England, Wales and many in Scotland, so I guess I had become a ground hopper before I even realised it. My parents gave up and accepted I was 'football crazy', even on family holidays I was more interested in going to look at local non league grounds instead of checking out the monuments and tourist attractions. But anybody whose ever being dragged kicking and screaming to a holiday camp in Lowestoft, Berwick upon Tweed or Rhyl would be able to understand my plight. What is the best part about non league? The majority of people involved with clubs, either in a hands on capacity, or as a supporter, are there because of a genuine love for the game. There are a few egotistical types about who don't 'get' what non-league football is about, but the vast majority of people I meet on my travels are very welcoming. Some seem genuinely moved that you've taken the trouble to travel a considerable distance to visit their club I help out at a few local non league clubs, my passion for grassroots football measures somewhere on the scale between massively enthusiastic and mentally ill obsessive behaviour, but I enjoy it a lot and I am not looking for a cure. How many grounds have you visited now? Wow! Good question, I didn't start making lists or writing a diary/blog of my travels until about 1987 by which time I had probably visited several hundred different grounds, so I doubt if I'll never know the 100% truly accurate answer to that one. Bloody loads! Ha ha But I still get that little tinge of excitement whenever I turn up at a ground I haven't been to before. My wife knows that any holidays I book during the football season will revolve around football fixtures, but they all had a lovely midweek stay in Great Yarmouth last year, when Gorleston Town and Great Yarmouth Town both had games on consecutive nights... and of course, they enjoyed their trip to the Pleasue Beach even more while I was having even more fun at Squires Gate FC! Do you have any favourites, and have you visited any obscure grounds? Auchinleck Talbot in Ayrshire is a 'must visit' for any serious football ground enthusiast, we went up on the day they won the league championship against their local rivals and the whole village was decked out in the clubs colours. Lothian Thistle is quite obscure, I went to watch Hearts v KIlmarnock and the police had the game called off at 2.25pm because the away team were stuck in traffic and the Lothian & Borders force didn't want to police a late kick off because Scotland were playing England a quarter of a mile away at 5.30PM... so while 13,000 disgruntled football fans made their way home, I hopped on a number 3 bus away from the city centre and got the last programme as I entered Thistle's ground. Boroughbridge FC in the West Yorkshire League have a nice little set up, with a good clubhouse and a stand that holds about 15 people.

ROB WAITE What has been the most memorable moment that you have seen for a club? (Cup wins, etc) I support Mansfield Town & Hearts (first saw them in 1973 at Berwick Rangers when I was 9, another family holiday when I sneaked of with my uncle, a man with a lot to answer for. And for my sins, I am an England supporter too. Mansfield winning promotion back into the football league a few years ago, although it isn't quite the holy grail it's cracked up to be, was a bit special... and I've been to quite a few Wembley and Hampden Park finals too. Best moment with England, in spite of having attended many much bigger games still has to be when my granddad took me to watch them beat Scotland 5-1 in 1975.

Have you ever watched any games abroad? If not, what would be the first choices on your list? Quite a few, first proper tournament I went to was the World Cup in 1982. There have been many trips since then too. But I seldom watch England away these days... though I go to nearly every home game and just got tickets for the next two (at Man City and Sunderland). I have plans to tick off a few grounds in Holland over the next few years, but I don't like missing any Mansfield Town Under 18 games on Saturday mornings now I work with them (it allows me to nip off anywhere I want on Saturday afternoons whilst still doing my bit for my club), so the logistics might mean it takes a bit longer to plan than I'd anticipated. I watched Hearts in Europe, the best trips were to Bayern Munich, Bordueax and Feyernoord.

If you were to pick a "dream XI" of players that you have seen live. Who would you pick? (teams in brackets) 1) Pat Jennings (Northern Ireland, Arsenal, Tottenham) 2) Danny McGrain (Scotland, cultic) 3) Kenny Sansom (England, Arsenal, Newcastle United) 4) Johnny Giles (Eire, Leeds United, Man Utd) 5) Steve Bould (Stoke City, Arsenal and not often enough for England) 6) Brian Kilcline (Newcastle United, Notts County and Mansfield Town... he probably kept Mansfield Town in the league one season) 7) Marco van Basten (Holland, Ajax) 8) Paul Scholes (England, Manchester United) 9) Kenny Clark (Worksop Town, Matlock Town) 10) Thierry Henry (France, Arsenal) 11) Eric Cantona (France, Leeds United Man Utd) No subs required this team has everything! I saw Maradona play at Wembley for a Rest of the World XI but gave Kenny Clark the nod in front of him Sadly when I saw J Cruyff in action it was only Jordi, not his dad Johan. I was only ten or eleven when the 1974 Dutch team mesmerised us all on TV, they are the best side I ever saw, but sadly not in the flesh.

What has been the best goal you have ever seen? From PL to non league? Gazza, Euro 96 v Scotland

What has been the best, and worst game that you watched last season? And during your adventures? I've seen an awful lot of football and a lot of awful football.Sat 31 Oct Handsworth Parramore 5 Shildon 4 (AET) - FA Vase Round 1 was an awesome end to end game as the score suggests, Paramore have a young striker called Kieran Wells who will have a great future in the game. The worse last season is Shirebrook Town 0 v AFC Mansfield 0 in the NCEL Div 1 was the sort of game that gets nil-nil draws a bad name... it seemed to go on forever. Is there any grounds that you are looking forward to attending over the next couple of months? I’m looking forward to visiting Grimsby Town’s training ground for the Mansfield Town U18’s. Man City and Sunderland with England, I am up to 88 of the current 92 grounds again after my completed total diminished due to new stadiums being built. Those two grounds are among the four I need to tick of along with Colchester and Brighton. I will visit them both next season I also keep missing the chance to go to Clitheroe so that is on my radar and I am hoping that you have a game at home to correspond with the Illuminations this year. Wed like to thank Rob for his time . If you enjoyed his feature, then make sure you check out his blog. (the66pow.blogspot.cp.uk)

WE’VE MET BEFORE? AFC DARWEN 1 SQUIRES GATE 1 Wednesday 16th September 2015 The returning Kay was first to have a chance for Gate, he drifted in from the left but his pass was cut out before it found Mckenna in the box. Kay again was lively down the left after a good spell of possession from Gate but after his good work to beat his man, his cross was poor. Mckenna on the other wing came into the game but after beating two Darwen men, his shot was blocked. The ball found it’s way over the Ferguson on the left hand side soon after but his shot was deflected wide. Gate best chance of the half came from Kay. Just before half time he struck the ball from outside the box but the home keeper did well to save. The follow up corner for Gate was just headed over by Buchan in what was another good chance just before the break. The home side had the first chance of the half but Fletcher was well behind the strike. The home side would open the scoring soon after. The ball played across the goal and with Gates defence stood still Darwen pounced and opened the scoring. Gate who had been the better team throughout, continued to attack and had plenty of chances. Gaul, the scorer for Darwen, had another chance but this time it was over. Billy McKenna had Gates next chance but the keeper spilt his shot. Nobody could follow up on the loose ball, which was eventually cleared. Two of Gates substitutes almost linked up to equalise for Gate. Terry Cummings sent down the line and he found space to play a superb ball across the box but Rowley who was in he middle, couldn’t make contact with the ball. Late drama ensued for Gate as minutes from the end of the game Danny Penswick had a header cleared off the line by Darwen Player/manager Neil Prince. Gates kept the pressure coming and were all over Darwen in the last 10 minutes. They would make that pressure pay with seconds left on the clock, Terry Cummings stepping up to poke the ball home after a scramble in the box.

SQUIRES GATE 6 AFC DARWEN 3 Tuesday 03 November 2015 Squires Gate were back in action on Tuesday night as they entertained fellow strugglers AFC Darwen. Darwen came into the game having changed there manager for the second time this season. Gate made just the one change from Saturday's 3-2 win against Padiham with goal hero Ash Rowley coming in for Josh Kay who dropped to the bench. Gate made a superb start to the game and took the lead after less than a minute. Darwen making a mistake at the back from kick off allowing Mark Buchan to tap in. But Gate lead wouldn't last for long some poor miscommunication at the back for Gate meant Trout left the ball and Fletcher didn't come for it allowing Coote in behind to square the ball to Gual to tap in. Good work from Richards forward from right back who beat his man at the line but his shot was blocked. Stayte had a follow up shot from the spilled ball but that was tapped wide. Gate took the lead from Noblett soon after. Good work from McKenna to close the keeper down who scuffed his clearance which fell to Noblett who fired in from around 35 yards out. Gate had good claims for two penalties turned down first Ash Rowley then McKenna but neither were judged to be fouls in the box. Gate couldn't have started the second half much worse conceding after a minute. Ferguson beat on the left allowed Coote to tap the ball in. Noblett had a chance from the edge of the box but he smashed the ball into a Darwen defender. Mark Buchan was in the right place at the right time again 14 minutes into the second after a good run and cross from McKenna found him inside the six yard box to tap in. Ryan Tanser found the net after coming off the bench after he broke forward to score. Ryan Riley fresh off the bench found space in behind the defence but his shot flew over the bar. Soon after thatMark Buchan grabbed his hatrick a quick free kick played to Tanser by Penswick he turned his man and shot but the keeper saves well. But Buchan was there to pounce as he picked up the spilt ball from the keeper to tap it into the net to make it 5-2. There was late drama in the game as Darwen scored what would be just a constellation goal. Paul Coote converting what looked a harsh penalty decision. But the scoring wouldn't end there as Gate had one more in them. Ryan Riley fresh from the bench beat 3 Darwen defenders before his shot was saved by the keeper. But the striker was quickest to react and tapped the ball in for 6-3.

ON THE ROAD

CAMMELL LAIRD 1907 WHO’S IN CHARGE? Neil Prince LAST SEASON

CAMMELL LAIRD 2 SQUIRES GATE 0 Both teams made a lively start to the game but Lairds had the better chances early on. The home side looked a good passing side and restricted Gates possession of the ball. Gates first clear chance of the game didn't really come till the thirteenth minute. Mark Buchan sending Ryan Tanser clear but the strikers shot was pushed wide by the keeper from a tight angle. The home side looked patient on the ball and constantly looked to play around Gate who at times looked wooden and off the beat.

Ryan Tanser again had another good chance for Gate on seventeenth minute but he couldn't keep his header down from the corner. Tanser was the real spark for Gate first half having another chance shortly after but his shot went wide when he cut inside. Mark Buchan did well to close down the Lairds keeper on thirty three minutes but his clearance rebounded off Buchans knee and out. At the other end Josh Woods, playing through illness, pulled of a superb save to his right with own hand to deny Lairds.

It would take the homeside just four minutes after that save to take the lead. The goal came to easy for Gates liking. The defence standing off Paul Foy for him to stroke the ball into the bottom corner. The goal came just two minutes before half time and was perhaps a tad harsh on Gate.Perhaps Gates best chance of the whole game came on 52 minutes. Joe Noblet taking the ball from the keepers hands after he spilt it. But his cross from the edge of the box went straight back to the keeper with both Tanser and Buchan waiting.

Unfortunately two minutes later Lairds found the net again. A needless Freekick given away just outside Gates box. Jay Clare stepped up for Lairds and fired the ball straight in from the Freekick. A superb finish. With conceding the second goal Gate had a resurgence and started battling for the ball abit more. Stayte went close with a shot just over the bar before down the other end Josh Woods made another great save to deny Craig Cairns.

Ash Rowley came on as a sub and almost made an instant impact. He cut inside but was tackled before he could shoot. Mark Buchan picked up the loose ball from the tackle but the shot was straight at the keeper. The homeside had a great chance to make it 3-0 on 70 minutes when they outnumbered Gate on the attack but luckily for Gate the pull back was poor and the ball was cleared. Gate had the last chance of the game but Mark Buchan pulled the ball wide from Ryan Tansers pull back.
