0 5 BOOTLE

Tuesday 10th October 2017 // Brian Addison Stadium // Attendance: 74 After a glimmer of hope in the second half of in Gates last game against West Didsbury, Gate were at least hopeful of taking that improvement into this game. Three goals from headers were Gate’s downfall in this one and highlighted there recent inability to defend. Defender Tony Rendell gave the visitors a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time with two first half goals. His first came in the 24 minute when he rose highest from the corner. Gate perhaps could have appealed as Rendall seemed to rise using a Gate defender but no appeal followed. Rendall’s second came in the 37th minute. A ball deep into he back post headed in by the defender. Both goals avoidable for Gate who had the chance to clear from both goals.

Nine minutes into the second half the lethal Ryan Cox would make it 3-0. The visitors coming out the dressing room smelling blood, the strike pounced as he has done previously against Gate for his sides third goal. Sub Eammon Price would then get in on the act to score the third header of the afternoon after 70 minutes. Connor Millington then compiled the misery for Gate late on grabbing another goal for his team. Bootle could have added a sixth in the 92nd minute but his the post from outside the box.

THE BIG INTERVIEW This week we interviewed Gate New Boy Dean Ing, Dean joined Gate from Bamber Bridge. We found out what teams he was looking forward to this season and what teams he would think would be tough this season. If gate were to have a premier league side visit, i'd definitely hope Looking forward to play charnock for the second time as its almost it was one of the manchester teams. I have city and united in my like a derby being so close. Widnes away is something to look for- blood so either would be good. ward too aswell since they play at a large ground at widnes vikings What was the first ever game you went to as a kid? rugby stadium. My first game was at bloomfield road watching blackpool beat bristol city 5-1 in 2002. Which teams do you think will be tought season?

What teams are you looking forward to facing this season?

Every game is a tough game however both runcorn sides are flying and will both be difficult games

Favourite ground you have ever played at?

How well are you settling in at Gate and how you enjoy your football here?

What is your goal target for the season ?

Bloomfield road as a blackpool fan My goal for the season is to climb the table as high as possible and show we are actually a good team despite the league table

I feel like I've settled in nicely now, we've got a great group of lads and they've helped me fit in and hopefully we will be able to start If you could pick 3 Premier League players, past or present, getting some more points on the board and enjoy the football after to play alongside with.Who would you pick and why? a tough start to the season. I would like to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin De Bruyne & What encouraged you to start playing football? Steven Gerrard. All world class players My dad got me into football being footy mad himself. football be- What the first thing you do before any match? ing a big thing in my family, naturally i got a big interest in the The first thing i do before any match is get my quid out and give it game and started to go to games when i was a little older which is to Buch's for my dirty boots as well as any other fines he tries why i began playing from a kid. getting out of me from this imaginary fines list.

Who was your footballing idol as a kid? Being a central midfielder and a Blackpool fan at heart, Charlie Adam was my favourite player when growing up.

What is the last thing you do before walking out onto the pitch? The last thing i do before going out onto the pitch is raid the sweet

If you weren't a Midfielder, which other position would you pile that Fletch usually provides before every game love to play in? Have you ever played in other positions What personal targets do you set each time you step out on during your time? that pitch? If i wasn't a midfielder, being a striker would be the other position i would like to play as. Nothing better than scoring goals. I've played everywhere pretty much including a game or two in goals however pretty much every position other than left back and right back.

What do you anticipate to be the biggest challenge in the game?

My personal targets are always to win any individual battles on the pitch and try and create chances throughout the game and maybe even get on the score sheet

Do you prepare any differently for big game then you do for normal ?

Every game is a big game so i prepare exactly the same as i would The biggest challenge for me personally would definitely be taking for any other match. a good performance into the next game due to confidence so What European team u loved for Gate to go up against? hopefully a good run of a good couple of performances this should- Barcelona or Real Madrid would be the best European teams i n't be an issue. would love to play against. Even better if they were away.

If you could pick one BPL Team for squires Gate to face at home who would you pick and why?

Prediction for today's game? P2-1 Gate

LAST TEN SEASONS:

THE BOSS

CHRIS STAMMERS Chris has had two previous spells as Assistant Manager at the club, firstly in the inaugural season in 2008 with manager Derek Goulding, before returning in the same role later alongside Paul Moore.

.

Chris is an FA Academy Manager Licence holder and a UEFA ‘A’ licenced coach with a wealth of experience. He has served as first team manager at clubs such as Burscough and Clitheroe in the Evo -Stik league, and has worked in coaching roles at many professional club academies including Manchester United, Blackburn, Burnley and most recently at Bury. His varied CV also includes roles coaching women’s football teams at Blackpool and Preston North End, as well as youth football and college football teams, and he has held head coach positions at respected independent football development academies.

BREIF HISTORY AFC Liverpool was formed in 2008 by 1,000 Liverpool FC fans who had become increasingly frustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtaining tickets for Premier League matches. The mooted ‘39th game’, in which Premier League fixtures would be played in different parts of the world, proved to be the final straw as it clearly highlighted that those who ran top flight football were more concerned with money than its fans. A website was created and, with the response being positive, work began to move to the next stage and create a steering group to make the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008, AFC Liverpool was officially formed and it was made clear that the club was not in any way a response to the contentious ownership issue at Anfield or as a protest against Liverpool Football Club. It was a response to issues at the top end of football in general. The new club's spokesman, fomer Radio Merseyside commentator, Alan Parry explained: "This has nothing to do with the ownership issue (at Liverpool FC), it's about affordability. I've been going to Anfield since the late Seventies when I was six years old. A season ticket in the Kop cost £45 in 1985, today it's £650, which I know is a lot cheaper than some other Premier League clubs, but in inflation terms Eighties prices should equate to £98 today.” Parry added: "Far from wishing to be estranged from the club, we are hoping that Liverpool will look upon us as a little brother." By May, AFC Liverpool had appointed its first manager in Derek Goulding. The following month the club arranged a ground share with Prescot Cables and had been accepted into the North West Counties Football League. On 16th July 2008 the club played its first game at the home of Ashton Town, a 1-1 draw in a friendly with St Helens Town. Mark Crowder scored the Reds first goal with a well taken penalty and a crowd of nearly 600 augured well for the season ahead. The club began its first league season extremely well, beating AFC Darwen 5-0 in their opening competitive game which heralded a run of ten wins in the first eleven games. However, they failed to keep this momentum going, eventually finishing a creditable fourth in the league. The season did prove fruitful though as a 1-0 victory over Padiham in First Division Trophy Final at Ashton Athletic provided the club’s first piece of silverware. The 2009/10 season began with three successive victories but after this became indifferent at best. After a 5-2 home defeat to Atherton Collieries on Easter Monday, Derek Goulding left the club and ex- assistant and goalkeeping coach Paul Moore was appointed caretaker manager. Under Moore’s stewardship the club had a strong end to the campaign, winning five out of their last seven league games and achieving a fifth place finish in the league. They also retained the First Division Trophy, coming from behind to beat Cheadle Town 2-1 in the final at Flixton. In doing so, AFC Liverpool became the first club to win the Trophy twice and to successfully defend it. The 2010/11 began in promising fashion with the Reds going on a ten game unbeaten run after an opening day loss at AFC Darwen. However, despite amassing their highest ever points total, promotion never looked likely because of the form of would be champions AFC Blackpool and second placed Runcorn Town. The Reds eventually finished fourth, narrowly missing third place on goal difference. There was further disappointment in the First Division Trophy when they reached the final for a third successive season only to lose to Atherton Collieries 3-2 after extra time. In the FA Vase, steady progress was made to the third round, where their dreams of Wembley were dashed by a defeat at holders and eventual winners, Whitley Bay. However, at the League AGM in July 2011, there was a surprise when Rossendale United were expelled from the league and Formby were demoted to the First Division. Holker Old Boys, who finished above AFC Liverpool on goal difference, were offered but declined an invitation to take up a place in the Premier Division. The Reds were invited to take the place and duly accepted, meaning they would play Premier Division football the following season.

VIEW FROM AWAY END

DAVE WILLIAMS

This week we interviewed AFC Liverpool Fan Dave Williams, we found out what he was expectation was for this season after there 12th and what will we be different then last year. We also found he 5 a side team, his dream scenario at Wembley , what teams he What are your expectations for the the new season after last season 12th Place finish? My honest expectation is for Chris Stammers, our manager, to build a team that is good enough to stay up in the Premier Division. Our current form is not too good but I have faith in the manager and he will turn it around.

Which players from Gate do you secretly admire? I think your manager, Daniel Penswick, was/is always a good solid defender. A hard tackler but a fair player to go with it. I can respect that.

Fans from other club don't know that AFC Liverpool?

This season will been different to last because?

We are a friendly club and, I think, we make all teams most welcome at the Marine Travel Arena in Crosby which is the home of our good friends at Marine AFC. Personally I think we have the best fans in the NWCFL.

We played Bootle FC four times last season and got beat every time. I hope we can reverse one of those defeats this season!

If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why?

Who has been ur most memorable moment of all time at AFC Liverpool?

None! No time for the Premier League!

Personally, my most memorable moment with AFC Liverpool would have to be winning the First Division Trophy against Padiham at a wet Brocstedes Park (home of Ashton Athletic) during our first season in 20082009. A great night in our short history.

I have been to Squires Gate several times and always enjoy the hard fought games up there in the North. Last season we won 5-4 at your place. More of the same on saturday!

I think it will be a big ask for AFC Liverpool to win the league this season but I have faith in Chris Stammers to build a team that get us up into a higher division. We have a good group of young players at the club at the moment and, hopefully, they can mature into a title winning side. It will no doubt take a few season but we'll get there one day.

want to be unfair and single any of them out. As I have mentioned I have no time for the Premier League so couldn't pick any of them to be in the team.

What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season?

I have been to the 'Old' Wembley many, many times with Liverpool FC but not had the chance to visited the 'New' Wembley as of yet. I would like to see AFC Liverpool get there and win the FA Vase after beating Squires Gate 1-0 aet.

Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score?

If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to 2 AFC Liverpool Do you think you have what it take to push yourself that little bit players and 3 BPL legends. Who would be in your side and why? closer and win the league and get promotion? I have all the time in the world for our players at AFC Liverpool so wouldn't

Bootle FC is the first fixtures I look out for at the start of every season. City of Liverpool are a decent side and good banter is had with those fine supporters. I would have to say I look forward to going to all the away games. What grounds are you looking forward to visiting this season? I always look forward to visiting your ground at The Brian Addison Stadium. A very well maintained ground and we are always sure of a friendly welcome. Another personal favourite is Holker Old Boys ground at Rakesmoor up in the wilds of Barrow.

Have you ever been to Wembley before? And What would be your ideal scenario there?

Your most underrated player is? I would have to say all the AFC Liverpool players, without fail, put in a good shift whenever or whereever they play. We don't always get the results we strive for, but they are a good set of Lads doing their best for Chris Stammers and the club.

Which players from Gate do you secretly admire? Sorry, I don't really know any of your players.

What teams are you looking forward to playing this year who played well last season?

Gate should keep eye out on what player from AFC Liverpool?

Once again I would have to say Bootle FC. We are sadly not playing them on the Boxing Day fixture this year but a friendly rivalry has developed over the years with this fine local club and we will beat them 1-0 next time we play them!!

Bootle FC, Runcorn Linnets and City of Liverpool all deserve a mention. I think all away fans deserve a mention.

Keep an eye on them all would be the best advice I could offer.

The best away fans are?

Prediction for today game?

LAST TIME OUT BARNOLDSWICK TOWN 3 2 AFC LIVERPOOL AIREY 59, DALE 61, LLOYD 90

OWN GOAL 46, EDGAR 86

Tuesday 10th October 2017 / Silentnight Stadium // Attendance: 122 Firstly, what a game that must have been for the neutral. Not that there were any in attendance mind you. A whirlwind first half that had everything but a goal. There were top drawer saves from both keepers, gilt edged chances squandered and two sides desperate for a win who put on a real spectacle. The second half had all of that plus 5 goals. That AFC Liverpool were again on the wrong side of an entertaining game full of good attacking football and a load of goals took the gloss off to say the least. Another result has gone against us in disappointing circumstances. The Reds willed themselves into the lead only to surrender it. They battled for an equaliser late on, then failed to close the game out and run home with a vital point. A cruel lesson but a crucial one and one that must be learned quickly if these lads are to turn the season around. To that Helter Skelter opening 45… The pace set from both sides was breathless and their attacking play took similar forms, direct and with plenty of width. AFC forward Andrew Lewis started extremely confidently, winning most of his battles and combined well early on with Danny Boden and Kevin Edgar. At the other end keeper Dom Garner made a flurry of vital saves to keep it goalless as Barnoldswick found themselves in behind several times. The home side would count themselves unlucky not to be ahead but AFC grew into the game and began to create. A series of half chances fell to The Reds following a dangerous corner but Barnoldswick blocked well. Soon after, skipper Joe Whittington ran on to a through ball down the left flank and crossed the ball just ahead of the full backs attempted tackle. The ball looped to the back post and Boden looked certain to score but for a wonderful reaction save from Connor King who parried for a corner. Whittington and Boden would be involved again with the captain just unable to convert Boden’s excellent cross. Not to be outdone, Barnoldswick created clear cut chances of their own. Time and time again the home side played through balls down the right flank and cross after cross came in for AFC to deal with. Centre back Lee McConchie cleared off the line before Garner pulled off another superb save over the bar. A fizzed ball across The Reds penalty area then came painfully close to being poked home. Despite all of this, a combination of quality goalkeeping and a lack of cutting edge kept the match 0-0 at half time. The frantic pace of the first half did not let up and it wasn’t long until the deadlock was finally broken. Barely a minute after the restart, explosive winger Boden attacked down the right and his dangerous low cross was turned home by a Barnoldswick defender, 1-0 AFC Liverpool. Boden looked to keep the pressure on with a beautifully struck half volley but Connor King pushed the ball onto the bar and prevented The Reds from doubling their lead. AFC Liverpool looked to be in the ascendancy early in the second but this came to an end across three agonising minutes. Barnoldswick put sustained pressure on The Reds backline and got in be01 CONNOR KING 01 DOMINIC GARNER hind twice – the result was two very well worked goals for the home 02 ANDREW HILL 02 DANIEL BODEN side. The first, a flicked ball over the top from a throw in and a good 03 JAMES CROKEN 03 JACK FLEMING finish from Shaun Airey levelled the scoring. Soon after, Zack Dale would smash the ball into the corner beyond Dom Garner to put his 04 JAKE LLYOYD 04 JAMES HOWELL team ahead. It went from bad to worse for AFC as captain Whittington 05 SHAUN AIREY 05 CHRISTOPHER ANDERSON had to be helped from the pitch following a coming together. The 20 minutes that followed were scrappy, the open attacking play 06 MATTHEW CAVANAGH 06 LEE MCCONCHIE that characterised the match so far was replaced by a battle and a 07 ZACK DALE 07 ADAM WESTON string of nothing fouls disrupted the remaining flow of the game. The 08 ADAM YATES 08 CALUM WOODS final 10 minutes saw AFC hold the ball better in the final third and would eventually see this pay off. The home team’s failure to clear 09 AARON HOLLINDRAKE 09 KEVIN EDGAR their lines was jumped on as the ball came to Kevin Edgar on the edge 10 HARRY THOMPSON 10 JOSEPH WHITTINGTON of the Barnoldswick area. Edgar took a good first touch and blasted 11 BEN GORMAN 11 ANDREW LEWIS the ball well beyond Connor King to level the game at 2-2. Edgar’s equaliser came in the 87th minute and should have seen Barnoldswick contained as AFC Liverpool protected a precious point. The exuber12 JOHN BECKWITH 12 DANIEL CATTLIN ance of youth won out however as these Reds pushed on for a winner 14 JACK OVERSON 14 STEPHEN WILSON when pragmatism may have served them better and they were cruelly punished. Barnoldswick countered down the right, Zack Dale used his 15 JOEL MELIA 15 OSCAR BILLINGTON pace to get clear and an excellent ball was volleyed home in the mid16 LAIM BLADES 16 JAMIE HERON dle by Jake Lloyd in the 92nd minute. 17 MARK THRELFALL

SATURDAY 10 DECEMBER 2016

It was clear what sort of game this was going to be when Gate got a let off 2 minutes later, a lovely drop of the shoulder before the forward fired narrowly wide for the visitors. But just two minutes later the visitors would get their reward. The winger allowed too much time and space to twist and turn before firing low in off the post past Woods. But as quickly as AFC scored Gate replied in what was an end to end game. Striker Brett Dawson baring down on goal to fire low to find a very tight space between the keeper and the post. Back came AFC again five minutes later. The visitors front three causing Gate problems all game. This time it was the turn of the striker Champion who much like the first goal, fired hard and low into the corner to beat Woods by inches. But back again came Gate in this end to end game which really was living up to that saying. A lovely ball over the top finding the run of Ric Seear. Seear bought the ball down before going past a defender who went down trying to tackle Seear before he slotted the ball through the keepers legs. Defender Michael White inches away from clearing the ball off the line. Gate couldn't hold onto their lead until half time with AFC striking again. Josh Woods not coming for the ball allowed the striker to pick it up in the box and fire past the keeper right on half time. It's fair to say that the second half saw both sides tighten up at the back compared to the first. Unfortunately it was AFC who would crest the better chances and deservedly open the scoring on 70 minutes to take the lead. Winger Belger grabbing his second of the game with an instinctive finish last Woods. AFC would then grab a second to extend their lead five minutes later and what a goal it was. AFC saving the best till last. Winger Leamey skipping past four Gate players before passing into the bottom corner past Woods. Gate would grab a goal back in added time after AFC looked to see out the result. Lovely ball over the top from Joe Noblet found the run of Ric Seear, the striker spotting past the keeper to complete his hatrick, all be it too late for Gate to get another.

The homeside couldn't have started the game any better as after just 40 seconds they opened the scoring. Emini Adegbenro catching Gate unaware to fire in from distance for the perfect start. The poor start from Gate actually looked to calm the visitors who went on to play the better football. Gate would capitalise on their reaction to going behind by replying in the best way possible. The dangerous looking Charlie Waters getting in front of his man to cross to the back post where Ben Seear fired home to level. Seear scoring his fifth goal of the season to give Gate a deserved equaliser. Soon after Seear's eqauslier, Gate could have had another. Charlie Waters again involved to send a ball upto Seydou Bamba, but the striker was judged to have controlled the ball with his hand. Not long after player/manager Danny Penswick shot from a tight angle inside the box but the ball fired behind into the main stand. Just before half time AFC could have taken the lead. After good work from Jack Leamey down the right hand side, he crossed to the edge of the box but Fred Champion fired over. Gate would continue their good spell after the half time break, Joe Noblet firing straight into the keepers arms from just outside the box from a freekick. The midfielder was then involved again in the build up to Gate taking the lead. Danny Penswick drawing his man out of position allowed Joe Noblet to fire just wide, winning a corner. From the corner Gate would take the lead. The corner falling to Dave Rossall on the opposite side of the box, he crossed the ball back in, to find the head of Seydou Bamba who rose highest to power a header in. Up until the 60th minute Gate looked in a controlling position but then the homeside were offered a way back into the game when many of their heads were down. The referee judged Paul Alexander to have fouled an AFC attacker, even though the attacker pulled down Alexander. Despite Gate's protests defender Michael White stepped upto the spot to fire the homeside level. Not two minutes after leveling, AFC would take the lead. A long searching ball pumped up into Gate's area was left by both Alexander and keeper Joe Griffith allowing Emini Adegbenro an easy finish. To say the 60th minute was a success for AFC would be an understatement. They extended their lead on 69 minutes through winger Jack Leamey. Much like in the reverse fixture when winger Jack Leamey scored a brace, including a superb finish, the winger would haunt Gate again. Another fine finish extending AFC's lead who now lead 4-2, having been loosing 2-1 ten minutes ago. Had it not been for a superb save from keeper Joe Griffith in the 90th minute, AFC could have extend their lead further. He tipped over a fearsome freekick from winger Jack Leamey to end the game.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY We take a look back at the history of football as it happens week by week.

THE EUROPEAN CUP KICKS OFF THE JAPANESE SUN SETS ON TAJIKISTAN

1955 2011

On 11 October 2011, a couple of Japanese players scored their first international goals as they handed Tajikistan a record loss. The occasion was a third-round match in Asian Football Confederation for the 2012 World Cup, with Japan hosting Tajikistan at Nagai Stadium in Osaka. Up to that point, all five games played earlier in the group had ended either 1-0 or 1-1, including two games each for Japan and Tajikistan, so nobody was quite prepared for what happened next. Striker Mike Havenaar (pictured), in second appearance for Japan and first start, scored the opener--his first for the national team--with an 11th-minute header. It was followed by goals from Shinji Okazaki (19'), Yuichi Komano (35', his first for Japan), and Shinji Kagawa (41') to stretch the lead to 4-0 at the break. In the second half, Havenaar again led off with a header (47'). Kengo Nakamura added one on the 56th minute before both Kagawa (68') and Okazaki (74') scored again. The final 8-0 margin set a new record low for Tajikistan, who proceeded to finish last in the group, eliminating them from qualification. Japan advanced to the fourth round, where they currently sit at the top of their group. As impressive as the win was for Japan, it fell far short of their record victory, a 15-0 win over the Philippines in 1967.

CHILE GETS A TICKET TO EUROPE

1965

On 12 October 1965, Chile beat Ecuador in a playoff to qualify for their first European World Cup. They were coming off their best showing in the tournament, finishing in third place as hosts in 1962. But they had never played in a World Cup hosted by a European country, withdrawing from Italy '34 and France '38 and failing to qualify for Switzerland '54 and Sweden '58. To reach England for the 1966 edition, they had to get through a CONMEBOL qualification group whose other members were Ecuador and Colombia. After four games each, Chile and Ecuador had identical records, with each having two wins, a draw, and a loss. Although Chile had a better goal differential and beat Ecuador 3-1 in the last scheduled match of the group, the rules ranked the teams by points only, forcing a decision through a playoff. The teams met in the neutral location of Lima, Peru, where Leonel Sánchez (pictured)--the hero of Chile's 1966 World Cup performance--opened the scoring in the 16th minute, followed by a goal from Rubén Marcos in the 40th minute to stake Chile to a 2-0 lead at the break. Ecuador finally managed to get on the scoreboard in the 89th minute, but it was nothing more than a consolation goal. The 2-1 win sent Chile to England, but they were unable to recapture their form from the previous tournament and were eliminated in the group stage.

DI NATALE’S NATALE On 13 October 1977, striker Antonio Di Natale was born in Naples. He went on to become one of Italy's top scorers, leading Serie A in back-toback seasons. He started his professional career in 1996 with Empoli, at that time in Serie B, but made only one appearance in that first season, then spent the next two on loan. In 1999, he finally broke into Empoli's first team, making 30 appearances in all competitions and scoring seven goals. His best season there was 2001-02, when his 16 league goals helped them get promoted to Serie A and earned Di Natale his first cap with Italy. After the 2003-04 season, with Empoli relegated back to Serie B, he stayed in the top flight by moving to Udinese and immediately helped them to a fourthplace finish. His breakout season came in 2009-10, when he scored 29 goals to claim the Capocannoniere and the 2010 Italian Footballer of the Year award. He claimed the scoring title a second time in 2010-11 with 28 goals. He remained with Udinese until his retirement in 2016, scoring a total of 227 goals in 446 appearances for the club.

LAST TIME OUT? WINSFORD UNITED SQUIRES GATE 1 The Cheshire hosts opened the scoring after two minutes, when Gate keeper Joe Griffith saved a shot with his foot and was unlucky to see the rebound fall to Nathan Cotterell. Gate went further behind when Dave Rossall gave away a penalty for a strong tackle and Kyle Riley scored from the spot, although Griffith got a hand to it. The visitors’ bad spell got worse as mid-table Winsford made it 3-0 on 20 minutes. Gate thought the ball had gone out for a throw but Scott Taylor continued down the left and crossed for Riley to score his second. Gate pulled one back six minutes before half-time, when Tarren Moxon squared the ball for Ben Seear to stroke home. Gate improved in the second half and competed better for the ball, though half-chances for Charlie Waters and Joe Noblet were not converted. The next goal was key and it was Winsford who scored it on 64 minutes. Rossall again conceded a penalty for sliding in and, despite Gate’s protests that the foul took place outside the box, Riley completed his hat-trick with a second spot-kick. Gate would grab a lastminute goal, when late substitute Jordan Casey fainted past defender Lee Duckworth to score on his debut, but it was too late. LAST TIME OUT?
