WINSFORD UNITED COTTERELL 18,23
Tuesday 6th November 2018//The Brian Addison Stadium /NWCFL PREMIER DVIISION/Attendance:60 Squires Gate suffered a third successive defeat on Tuesday night this time against bottom of the league Winsford United. The visitors, who picked up their first away win of the season, moved off the bottom of the league with the win and out of the relegation zone. Gate welcomed back defender’s Dan Gray and Ben Reader whilst handing Mututu Chilufya a first start. The visitors started the brighter of the two sides and took the lead after 18 minutes. Nathan Cotterell with his first of the night, the winger picking out the back of the net from outside the area. Cotterell was then on hand to grab his second of the game, this one a little less extravagant than the first. He had plenty of time to control the ball at the back post before poking back Ben Fletcher for 2-0. Midfielder Joey Mullen took aim for Gate from outside the box on the half hour mark but his effort was turned around the post by the keeper.
A returning Dan Gray whipped in a cross from a quick freekick along the box but nobody in blue could get s touch for Gate. Winsford had a claim for a penalty on the stroke of half time, but the referee waved away protests and blew for half time. Half time: Squires Gate 0-2 Winsford United Gate looked much better after some choice words from the manager at half time. Dean Ing came close when he caught Ryan Riley’s cross with a lovely header, but the Winsford keeper was equal to it and saved. Whilst Gate created several chances, once again it was in the final third that Gate struggled with chances not converted in front of goal. The loss leaves Gate in 14th but they’ll have to wait another week before putting things right in the league.

1 0 SQUIRES GATE
Saturday 10th November 2018/TDP Solicitors Stadium/Marcon Cup round 2/Attendance:281 Squires Gate exited the Macron Cup on Saturday afternoon but can be proud of their performance against the league leaders. Andy Clarkson's men more than matched City of Liverpool, who sit top of the league unbeaten, but just couldn't find a goal from the game. Manager Andy Clarkson welcomed back winger Jordan Salthouse into the side whilst James Boyd also returned on the opposite side of the pitch. The homeside had the chance to open the scoring in the opening minute. Striker Craig Cairns was played in on goal but fired well over not troubling Ben Fletcher. Gate themselves had some good opportunities early in the game from freekicks. Sadly though both freekicks lacked the desired quality from Gate and were easily dealt with by Liverpool. The homeside took the lead after 25 minutes. Gate loosing the ball in midfield and in one pass Craig Cairns was set clear and slotted under Ben Fletcher to open the scoring. Riccardo Egidi looked to curl the ball past the keeper from outside the box when Ryan Riley found him but the keeper was equal to him. The homeside then had a great chance of their own when they really should have doubled the lead. A teasing ball was played across the box to find the right back arriving late but he fired over.
Half time: City of Liverpool 1-0 Squires Gate
Liverpool had the chance to extend their lead at the start of the second half but were denied by a superb Ben Fletcher save. He denied Craig Cairns' header with a point blank save. Gate could have leveled the game moments later when Joe Booth spotted the homesides keeper off his line but the keeper recovered well to catch the ball. Andy Clarkson's men were coming into the game more in the second half playing some lovely football from midfield. Dean Ing and Riccardo Egidi linked up well to get in the box, but the return pass between the two was just a little too heavy and rolled out of play. Joe Booth then let fire from outside the box minutes later after more good passing from Gate's midfield but his shot hit the side netting. Dean Ing had the chance the level the game mid way through the second half but he couldn't keep his header down. Captain Joe Booth and Jordan Salthouse linking up to find Ing who moved further forward in the second half. Ryan Charnley came close for Gate in the 82nd minute when he let rip from outside the box but his shot was just inches wide to leveling the game for Gate. Seydou Bamba then whipped a lovely cross into the box in the 90th minute but nobody could get a touch in Gate's finally attack.

Tuesday 13th November 2018/Victoria Park/NWCFL Premier Division/Attendance:106 Squires Gate fought back from being 1-0 down to draw 1-1 away at Burscough. Gate named an unchanged team from Saturday’s 1-0 defeat away at league leaders City of Liverpool. On the bench they welcomed back Dan Gray, Adam Sumner and Brett Dawson. In a tight first half, both sides had early chance. Joe Booth shot wide for Gate before former Gate winger Jordan Casey tested Ben Fletcher in goal. The homeside hit Gate’s wall from a freekick before the rebound was fired over. Burscough took the lead half an hour into the game when former Gate winger Jordan Casey came back to haunt Gate. He was on the end of a downwards header to fire past Ben Fletcher.
Half Time: Burscough 1-0 Squires Gate Whilst Gate pushed and pushed in the second half a resilient Burscough side stood firm. It took until late into the game for Gate to grab an equaliser. Midfielder Dean Ing popping up in the 88th minute to fire Gate level and need their loosing run.

Saturday 17th November 2018/TDP Solicitors Stadium /NWCFL Premier Division/Attendance :230 Squires Gate showed incredible spirit to comeback from 3-1 down at half time to beat Bootle 5-3 on Saturday afternoon. Gate took the lead in the game but were pegged back three times in the first half by the homeside. Andy Clarkson welcomed back Dan Gray, Adam Sumner, Ben Reader and Ric Seear into the side after Tuesday nights draw away at Burscough. Gate took the lead just four minutes into the game. Ryan Riley sending in a corner found Ric Seear who rose highest to head past keeper Ryan Jones on his return to the side. It didn't take long for Bootle to equalise though and in some style. Striker Steve Jones unleashing a superb strike into the top corner leaving Ben Fletcher with no chance. Bootle came close to doubling their lead in the 12th minute but Gate had Dan Gray to thank. Bootle squared the ball to the six yard box but Dan Gray was there on the line to clear the ball for Gate. Ben Fletcher was then on hand for Gate a minute later when he got down low to save the ball on the line. Bootle eventually took the lead with another fine finish, this time from Steven Hoy. The midfielder took aim from outside the box beating Ben Fletcher with the first time finish. The third goal came in disappointing fashion in Gate's eyes. Midfielder Connor Millington with too much time and space drove the ball low past Ben Fletcher whose view of the ball was blocked by a crowded penalty box. Gate should have grabbed a goal back just before half time but somehow missed the target. From a corner the ball was headed back across goal to Dean Ing but his header looped onto the bar and over.
Half time: Bootle 3-1 Squires Gate
Gate came out in the second half looking to improve after the first 45 and instantly did so. Riccardo Egidi held off his man before slotting past the keeper to get Gate back into the game early on. The homeside were reduced to ten men in the 53rd minute when Ric Seear was bought down by the last man. The referee was left with no option other than to send Daniel Murphy for an early shower. Adam Sumner came close to equalising for Gate on the hour mark. He sent in a freekick towards the back post that was inches from hitting the back of the net. Gate were given the opportunity to grab another goal back in the 65th minute when James Boyd's shirt was pulled in the box. The winger went down winning Gate a penalty which he confidently stepped up to roll past the keeper to equalise for Gate. Now with all the momentum in the game, Gate looked to go on and win the game. Sub Ryan Charnley gave Gate the lead. The midfielder sent in a corner which was cleared back to him he then sent in a second cross which looped over the keeper at the back post into the back of the net. Ric Seear, who has been away spending time with his new born daughter, scored his second of the game with nine minutes left. He was in the right place at the right time to tap in after Dean Ing had closed down the keeper and won the ball back. Minutes later the homeside were awarded a penalty for a handball by Ben Reader. The Bootle player stepped up but Ben Fletcher guessed the right way and saved! The referee though spotted a player come into the box before the kick was taken and gave Bootle a second chance to take the kick. Ben Fletcher though was equal again and saved on the other side of the net. Bootle, for the second game running, were shown a second red card this time striker Elliot Nevitt with a dangerous high tackle on Joe Booth.

Saturday 24th November 2018/Viridor Community Stadium /NWCFL Premier Division/Attendance :96 Gate looked to control the game early on against 3rd place Runcorn Town and had some early chances. Riccardo Egidi and Ric Seear looked to solidify their partnership up front in just their second game playing together and caused Town problems from the start. Egidi was sent through on goal early on but he just timed his run wrong and was flagged for offside. In the 7th minute Seear was sent through by Ryan Charnley but Town keeper Adam Reid was off his line early to collect. The two linked up again a minute later when Gate went close again. The ball crossed into the box was left by Egidi before Seear flicked it round the corner to the late arriving James Boyd but he just fired wide from the edge of the box. Former Blackpool FC youngster Jamie Menagh looked to get the homeside on the attack in the 12th minute but his cross into the box was wayward and out for a goal kick. Gate made their early possession count opening the scoring in the 19th minute. Young Defender Dan Gray picked out striker Ric Seear with a lovely timed ball, Seear on the last mans shoulder beat the defender for pace before firing under the keeper to give Gate the lead.Seear and Gray were on hand again four minutes latter when they linked up for a second time. Gray's cross wasn't cleared by Town's defence and with Seear lurking, the striker controlled the ball and slotted into the bottom corner for his second. Gate were allowed too much space by the hosts and got themselves in on goal again. Ryan Charnley getting into the six yard box but he tried to roll the ball around the keeper who got down well to save his teams blushes. Minutes later Gate hit Runcorn on the break after clearing their corner,
James Boyd and Ric Seear breaking at speed but Boyd's pass to Seear for his hatrick was just ahead of the striker. The homeside did manage to pull a goal back a minute before half time. Gate not staying on their feet on the edge of the box allowed Gary Burnett to wriggle past and fire past Fletcher. Half time: Runcorn Town 1-2 Squires Gate Looking for a reaction, Runcorn came out looking to grab a goal back quickly to level the game. Dale Jennings was sent through in the 54th minute and tried to lob Ben Fletcher but Fletcher caught the ball. It was Gate though who would add their third goal of the game in the 60th minute. Ryan Charnley playing a lovely ball to find the run of James Boyd who beat the keeper one on one. Gate were reduced to ten men in the 64th minute in what Gate thought were controversial circumstances. Ben Reader was shown a straight red for bringing Burnett down whilst also conceding a penalty. Gate though feeling that the new Double Jeopardy rule should have applied to the situation. Winger Dale Jennings was the man to grab a goal back for the homeside when he tucked away the penalty past Ben Fletcher. Gate understandably looked to see out the game and deny Town an equalising goal. Gary Burnett found Harry Brazel in the box for his sides best chance to grab a goal, but he headed wide. Andy Clarkson's side could have had a fourth when Riccardo Egidi took the ball around his man but keeper Adam Reid again did well to save his team.

Saturday 1st December 2018/Litherland Sports Park/NWCFL Premier Division/Attendance :58 Gate had the first chance of the game after a sustained spell of possession. Playing through midfield the move ended with James Boyd shooting wide from the edge of the box. The homeside felt aggrieved after nine minutes when they had calls for a penalty turned away. Ben Fletcher going for the ball pulled away his hands at the feet of the striker who went down without any contact, the referee showing a yellow card for a dive. Ric Seear went close for Gate after 15 minutes. The original corner was cleared by the homeside before Gate won the ball back and crossed to Seear but his looping header was over the bar. Seear's striker partner, Riccardo Egidi had the next chance but after rolling the ball past the keeper to striker hit the post from a tight angle. Riccardo didn't have to wait long for his second opportunity and this time the striker made it count. The big man held of his man as he burst into the box before slotting the ball under the keeper. A quick fire second goal came for Gate when James Boyd scored his second in two games. Ric Seear's original shot was saved but the keeper parried the ball into the late arriving Boyd who volleyed the ball in for 2-0. Gate were let off just before the break when Remyca had two good opportunities to grab a goal back.
The first came when the ball was played low across the box where a Remyca man was waiting, but he fired over the bar from inside the six yard box. Then Ben Fletcher, who had a quiet first half, reacted quickly to get down low and save to his left.
Half time: Litherland Remyca 0-2 Squires Gate The homeside opening the scoring early in the second half in controversial circumstances. Gate felt that both Ben Fletcher and Dave Rossall were fouled in the build up as Warren Jevons rolled the ball into the empty net. Remyca had the ball in the back of the net after 75 minutes but the goal was ruled offside by the official. The homeside were reduced to ten men with seven minutes left when Gate were on the break looking for a fourth goal. Ric Seear was making ground down the left hand side when a bad tackle from behind took him down and reduced the homeside to ten men. Gate held on and defended well despite late pressure from the homeside. The win moves Gate upto 10th place in the league with two games in hand on Charnock Richard who a place below but level on points

JAY FOULDS AND DOUIGE PITTS Ashton like most club in the league and hire two manager and one as a player manager. This season the pair has been on point and made a great start to the season and in the good place to finished in there normally mid table finished. Jay and company will know Andy and his team is no walk after gate turn in fortune at the right time and will give Ashton a great game.
HISTORY OF THE ASHTON Ashton Athletic Football Club was founded in 1968 and playing in the Wigan Sunday League winning every Division in consecutive seasons and many cup competitions before switching to the Warrington League on Saturdays where similar success was sustained. The Club developed Brocstedes Park and was admitted to the Lancashire Combination, before becoming a founder member of the North West Counties League when the Combination merged with the Cheshire league in 1982. Unfortunately, financial constraints prevented the required ground improvements to be completed, and the Club was relegated into the M anchester league Division One in 1986. The drop of two leagues resulted in the majority of the playing staff moving to other club's and for numerous years the club endeavored to re-build. Players came and went, lacking the Club loyalty that had brought success to the Club in the 1970's and early 80's until the Committee embraced an ambitious youth development policy in 1999 The Club is now at the end of a ten-year development plan to enhance its recreational facilities and expand the Club, in particular its junior section. Eight years ago, the Club had two teams, 50 members, one mediocre pitch with dilapidated clubhouse and changing rooms. Since then the Club members have worked tirelessly to progress the Club within its means, and with some help from external grant sources. Assistance from the Football foundation, Awards for All programme, and Wigan Council enabled a series of improvements to be completed. The main pitch was re-drained, a second pitch acquired/improved, new changing rooms and Clubhouse built, disabled access provided and other improvements made to the grounds. More recently the ground has been brought up to the necessary Ground Grading for re-entry into the NWCFL, in time for the start of the 2006/7 season and further inprovements have provided additional seating. The 2008/09 season also saw further progression of the Club, having been promoted to the Premier Division of the Vodkat North West Counties League. We were again able take to the national stage, having been accepted in the FA Cup competition after last season’s debut in the FA Vase which proved very lucrative for the Club, progressing through 3 stages and beating 2 teams from higher leagues in the process. The previous season also saw cup success for the Club retaining the Atherton Charity Cup at the end of the season. Following an impressive 6th place finish in the 2008/09 season, the Yellows struggled in the league for the next 4 seasons, finishing in the bottom three of the league in three of the next four seasons. 21st (09/10), 22nd (10/11), 14th (11/12) and 20th (12/13). Jimmy McBride, who took over the reins midway through the 12/13, left the club when the season ended and the club took the unusual step in bringing in a trio of managers, Jay Foulds, Ben Kay and Dougie Pitts. Jay and Ben were brought in from Wigan Robin Park and Dougie came in following a break from the game. The trio needed to completely rebuild the squad for the 2013/14 season and made an excellent start to their managerial careers creating club history with a 6th place finish and beating Maine Road 1-0 to win the League Challenge Cup at Curzon Ashton. More club history was made in the 2014/15 season with a highest ever 5th place finish in the league, conceding only 38 goals and losing only 7 league games that season and the Yellows were successful in the Wigan Cup, beating Newburgh Harrock United 5-1 in the final at Brocstedes Park. The 2015/16 season saw the retirement of Jay Foulds and he was replaced in the Ashton Athletic goal by Martin Pearson. Unfortunately, there were no cup heroics in that season but there was a solid 7th place finish in the league. The 2016/17 saw another top 10 finish with the club ending the season in 9th place, but the club made history in the cups reaching the 2nd qualifying round for the first time ever, losing 5-0 against Halifax Town and winning the Lancashire Cup for the first time, coming from a goal down to win 2-1 against Radcliffe Borough. Lee Vaughan scoring the winner in the final minute of the game. With the impact the management trio have made at the club in the 4 seasons that they have been in charge of the first team, the success was noticed from clubs at a higher level and following the 2016/17 season, Ben Kay left his role as joint manager to take up the role as assistant manager to Simon Howarth at Clitheroe FC, where he will link up again former Yellows captain, Ian Rowlands. A new vision for the Club is under discussion to further develop the Club and these will include plans for improvements to the access road, new junior changing rooms, additional playing fields for the junior section and a proposed girls/ladies section. The main ground is also scheduled for enhancement works with additional covered spectator areas .The Club is a voluntary organisation run by a Committee of 14 alongside approximately 25 coaches and managers. Any money raised by the Club has been ploughed back into improving the facilities and developing the youth section. The Club now has a total membership of more than 400. We have 9 junior teams consisting of approximately 160 children who take advantage of the improvement of our now excellent facilities, whilst hundreds of children and adults from opposition teams also benefit from the continually improving facilities. The Club is keen to maintain the pace of development of the club and future plans will enable increased activity at the Club, additional Junior teams and a much safer and secure environment in particular for spectators and Children. The Club was awarded the FA Charter Standard in 2013 and an intensive Coach Education Programme is well under way.

It only took the home side nine minutes to open the scoring – a Yellows corner wasn’t properly cleared and when the ball eventually fell to Joshua Peet, he smashed it beyond Marcus Burgess. And when West surrendered the ball in midfield two minutes later, Nicholson tapped home a right-wing cross to put Ashton in cruise control. West had barely escaped their own half by the time the home side added a third. The overworked Burgess parried a shot from the edge of the box, but Matthew Reid seized on the rebound and rolled the ball into the net. The visitors eked out half-chances – Ben Woods prodded an Abel Tsegaye cross straight at goalkeeper Martin Pearson before Tsegaye had a free-kick tipped over – but Ashton were merely conserving energy having sewn the game up. The second half introductions of Ashley Leather and Joe Shaw made little difference despite Leather’s willing running down the right side, and Ashton moved up a gear to add a fourth in the 71st minute. Nicholson collected the ball in the left channel, cut inside 01 MARTIN PEARSON 01 MARCUS BURGESS and beat Burgess at his near post. 02 SAUL GUFFOG 02 SCOTT MASON Burgess had produced a number of smart 03 ZACHARY COOPER 03 DECLAN GALLAGHER saves to limit the damage but he was help04 JOHN ROBERTS 04AARON CRINGLE less to prevent the home side’s fifth goal in 05 LUCA DEFREITAS-HANSEN 05 MATTHEW ECKERSLEY the closing moments. AROUND THE LEAGUE Four ties involving five of our clubs in the Buildbase FA Vase 3rd Round, coupled with games across all three divisions, offered another fascinating bill of fare at the weekend. Northwich Victoria reached the last 32 of the Buildbase FA Vase with a 3-0 win over Silsden in the only tie that matched two of our teams together. First half goals from Brandon Barski and Andrew Fitzgerald, and a late penalty from Joel Brownhill wrapped up the win for Vics, who are the only team from our league guaranteed a place in the next round. Irlam will also be in Monday's draw but their tie against Winterton Rangers was abandoned due to floodlight failure, with a replay date set to be arranged for next week. Our other two representatives went out of the competition, with late goals in both cases proving to be decisive. Two goals in the last eight minutes saw Avro lose 2-0 at home to West Auckland Town, and there was an even more dramatic finish up in the North East, with Runcorn Town eventually going down 5-4 to Newcastle Benfield. Town were 4-2 down with seven minutes remaining when two goals in as many minutes from Craig Lindfield and Danny Byrnes brought them level at 4-4, but Benfield struck a winner in stoppage to clinch a last gasp win. There were four games in the Premier Division, and City of Liverpool extended their lead at the top to six points over Congleton Town after a 1-1 draw at home to 1874 Northwich. Craig Cairns gave the home side a half time lead, but Scott McGowan levelled for the Greens a minute after the restart. There was an important win at the other end of the table for Winsford United, whose 3-0 win over bottom club Abbey Hey at the St Luke's Barton Stadium moved them nine points clear of the drop zone. William Foster, David Short and Rhys Saunders were on target for the Blues. The other two games ended in 2-1 wins for the visiting sides, and at the LSP first half goals from Riccardo Egidi and James Boyd set Squires Gate on the way to victory over Litherland REMYCA. Meanwhile at Potteries Park there was a dramatic finish as Donald Eumessi's second goal of the game, in the 90th minute, earned Burscough the points against Hanley Town. The First Division North is still headed by Longridge Town, who moved six points clear of Carlisle City in second place thanks to a 6-3 win at Cleator Moor Celtic. A hat trick from Jason Hart was the highlight of the win, and the day was rounded off for Town when they learned that their nearest challengers Carlisle City had been held to a 2-2 draw at home to Nelson. Prestwich Heys continued their good goalscoring form with a 6-0 home win over Holker Old Boys, a result that moved them in to joint third place alongside Avro. Adam Farrell and Lee Grimshaw both grabbed doubles for Heys. Anthony Lyons scored twice in AFC Liverpool's 3-1 win at Atherton LR that moved the Reds into 6th place and kept LR at the bottom of the table, and a first half hat trick from Elliott Pond set AFC Darwen on the way to a 4-3 win at Ashton Town. Chadderton came from behind to win 4-2 at home to Garstang, a result that moved them further away from the relegation zone, and Daisy Hill are just above the drop zone on goal difference after going down 2-1 at home to Bacup Borough. The other two games in the division ended all square, with St Helens Town sharing a 2-2 draw with Shelley, and Steeton being held to 1-1 draw at home to Lower Breck. Although First Division South leaders Abbey Hulton United had no game, they remain at the top of the table, although their lead has been narrowed to two points, after victories for both Rylands and Wythenshawe Town. Jay White struck a hat trick in Rylands' 7-0 win over Ellesmere Rangers, and Lee Gregory, Brad Byrne, Steven Yarwood and Benjamin Steer all hit the back of the net at Alsager Town in Wythenshawe Town's 4-1 win at Wood Park. Jack Tomlinson's hat trick helped Stone Old Alleynians to a 4-1 win over Cammell Laird 1907, and they are now ahead of Wythenshawe Amateurs on goal difference in fourth place, after the Ammies went down 3-2 at home to Cheadle Town. Sandbach United's recent good fork deserted them as they went down 3-1 at home to FC Oswestry Town, a result that meant Vauxhall Motors leapfrogged over them in the table, thanks to a 4-1 home win over New Mills. Eccleshall also hit the back of the net four times, winning 4-2 against Maine Road at Pershall Park, and Callum Dolan's goal proved to be decisive in Stockport Town's 2-1 win in their derby clash against Cheadle Heath Nomads. In a new feature we team up with the Non-league paper editor Matt Badcock who is going a little bit off a column each week to place into our programme so all you non-league fan can found out at happen all across the non-league pyramid
This week’s NLP programme column below, written by Jon Couch. ANOTHER new record was equalled in the National League this week. Chesterfield's 1-1 draw with Bromley on Tuesday night was their NINTH successive stalemate, breaking a club record and matching the longest ever sequence in the top five divisions in English football, joining the feat of Woking in the 2003-04 Conference season. It's a run that sees Martin Allen's men ensconced in the relegation zone in their first ever season of Non-League football, although bizarrely they are currently on the best and worst run of form in club history. The Spireites are 19 league games without a win – breaking a new club record for the longest winless run – but Zavon Hines' injury-time penalty which helped secure a share of the spoils against Bromley at the Proact Stadium also means the club are unbeaten in 12 games – their best run of form for 12 years. Such a strange sequence will naturally draw both positive and negative reactions but does express how fine lines can determine the short-term future of both club and individual. If the Spireites could have turned just four of those nine draws into wins they would have turned their 20-point haul from 22 matches into a top-ten place and play-off contention. And look at the manager himself. Allen is under intense pressure at the Proact for their underwhelming start to the season, although it's interesting that no-one in the know is writing off the Spireites off just yet. You need only look back to see Tranmere Rovers turn a struggling start into promotion back to the elite 92 and with the top seven competing for promotion places these days, anything can happen. And let's face it, who would want to face Chesterfield in a knockout encounter at the Proact in front of 8,000 roaring home supporters? Allen remains a man of mystery in football. He does things slightly differently to the rest, hence his 'Mad Dog' nickname but few could argue his methods are effective. He's already taken Barnet to the Conference title, in 2014-15, having won the League Two title with Gillingham a year earlier. Chesterfield's season will reach the halfway stage when they entertain title favourites Salford City at the Proact on December 8. Who would bet against them stunning the Ammies and launching a second-half surge up the table? Fine lines remember.
