Squires Gate vs Ashton Athletic

v Ashton Athletic 12.092015 North West Counties Premier Division Kick Off: 15.000 Issue 5 ÂŁ1.50

Good afternoon and welcome to the Royal British Legion Stadium for our league fixture against Ashton Athletic FC. May I welcome all associated with Ashton and wish you a safe journey home. It's been a tough start to the season for both the 1st and reserve teams, however, despite the results I'm more than confident that both teams will have a good season. I firmly believe in the players we have across both teams and feel that there's enough quality throughout the club for success to be achieved. Over the course of the season I'm confident that results will pick up and that we'll finish in the positions that we deserve to. Today we face a club I have a lot of respect for. With limited resources compared to some in our league they have consistently finished in excellent positions and won silverware to add to the league achievements. It will be a tough game and we'll have to be at our best to gain the result we want but if we perform like we did on Tuesday we won't be far away. Thank you for your support and I hope to see you at School Road for our next home fixture. Up the Gate!!

Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S. E. I. [Maintenance] LTD) Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. Kept numerous clean sheets and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form.

Chris Anderson (Available for sponsorship) Chris made his league debut on the first game of last season. A versatile player that has a wand of a left foot. Some impressive performances saw him awarded ‘Coaches Player of the season’ last year. A key player in the side that influences others around him.

Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship) After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the 2015/16 season.

Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd) One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the Year 2014/15.

Wes Benjamin (Available for sponsorship) Wes is a highly promising defender that arrives in time for the start of the 2015/16 season. He has experience playing in National League North football but is looking to develop through regular football with Squires Gate. Wes is comfortable playing at both centre back or right back and can even play in midfield if needed.

Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship) A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.

Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore) Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.

Terry Cummings (Available for sponsorship) Terry is a graduate of Myerscough College. He made his debut on the opening day of this season against 1874 Northwich. He is a forward player capable of playing across the front of any of the attacking positions in midfield. With bags of skill and ability, he’ll be hoping to make his mark on the season at the earliest opportunity.

Keiffer Cunningham (Available for sponsorship) Kiefer is a very promising young player that can play in numerous attacking positions. He made a limited number of appearances last year due to work commitments but is hoping to make a big impact this season. A young prospect with plenty to offer.

Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was beneficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.

Josh Kay(Available for sponsorship) One of the youngest players in the squad that broke into the first team ranks at the end of last season. Very talented player with a strong personality which makes him ideal for non league football. Very bright future ahead of him if he stays focused and learns from others around him.

Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship) Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.

Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship) The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a big influence on games when in the mood.

Ashley Rowley (Available for sponsorship) Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact this season.

Danny Penswick (Bill White ) Danny is the captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.

Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship) Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this season.

Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship) Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in 2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.

10 MAN GATE EARN REPLAY Saturday 5th September 2015 Report by Mark Ashmore. Pictures by Albert Cooper Gate’s Vase sucess was short lived last year as they went out to eventual vase runners up and league winners Glossop North End. Gate were looking to compete in this compation after recently loosing in the FA Cup. After Tuesday nights thrilling 2-2 draw with Nelson Gate manager Dave McCann chose to keep the starting 11 the same with Buchan, Anderson and McKenna on the bench. Gate made a good start to the first half and had several chances to open the scoring. The home sides best chance of the half came when Cummings found himself in space in the 6 yard box but he scuffed his sitter straight into the keepers arms. Gate looked dominant from corners and had successive chances denied. Captain Penswick and Westwood both denied by good saves from the set pieces. The opening goal of the game came from the visitors. Striker Gareth Mooney opening the scoring on the 24th minute. The first half had no other chances of note with neither side looking likely to add to the scoreline. Dave McCann took his side in at half time and words were clearly exchanged as just 4 minutes into the second half Gate equalised. Ash Rowley finding space on the edge of the box and when the loose ball came to his feet he made no mistake and fired low under the keeper. The equaliser seemed to perk the home side up after a flat first half Gate began to attack with more intensity. The home sides job was made even harder when just 20 minutes into the second half midfield Higgins, making his second start for the club, was harshly shown a red card after a strong challenge to win the ball. Josh Kay was next to attack Irlam as he set off from his own half but after beating countless men on his own and reaching the edge of the box his shot couldn’t match the build up play and the ball bobbled wide. It was Kay again with another chance for the home side this time on the left hand side, but this time his shot bobbled up in from of the keeper, but much to the relief of the away side the keeper reacted quickest to scoop the ball up. Despite both side trying there hardest the game would finish 1-1 and as it’s a Vase competion, extra time would be played. So into extra time it was. The first half didn’t start well for Gate as Irlam would take advantage of the extra man and take the lead. Jacques Kpohogmou the man to put Irlam in front. The defender rising highest from the corner to beat Fletcher who had been in fine form. Apart from the goal the first half of extra time was fairly uneventful. In a bid to bring the game back in Gates favour McCann made a double substitution and lined up very attacking for the second half. The second half would belong to Gate who showed great spirit and determination to keep fighting for every ball in a bid to find an equalising goal. When other teams would have rolled over and died

ITEM OF CLOTHING THAT YOU POSSESS

DRINK

A polo shirt covered in different coloured parrots.

Birra Moretti

PAIR OF BOOTS

FOOTBALLER Zinedine Zidane. A complete footballer who could control the match from start to finish and also slowly, yet gracefully lost his hair which I’m beginning to appreciate.

I’ve just bought a slick new pair of pink Adidas boots for this season, though I’ve been told they are worth a hefty club fine.

MOST INSPIRATIONAL PLAYER Alex McKendrick. The only Gate player yet to buy a pair of football boots since joining the club. He was seen wearing Penswick’s boots last season.

WHAT DO YOU ASPIRE TO ACHIEVE A goal for the club, which may require a solid pre season to get me over the half way line and into the box.

TV SHOW/FILM Rain Man - Starring Channy as Ray.

PERSON YOU’D GO ON HOLIDAY WITH FROM SQUIRES GATE Billy McKenna. He hibernates for the winter so I’m presuming he spends that time planning some epic holidays!

Squires Gate reserves played their first league game away to Padiham last Saturday, and it was not the start they wanted as they got thrashed 4-0 by the table topping side. On Thursday night, they travelled to Colne hoping to turn their fortunes round, but this was not the case, as they got beat 5-0 by an impressive Colne side. Our first league home game against Lancaster City is on the 26th. For only ÂŁ2, come and support the lads!

Ashton Athletic Football Club was founded in 1968 and played in the Wigan Sunday League, where they won every division in consecutive seasons and also many cup competitions before switching to the Warrington League on Saturdays where similar success was sustained. The club developed Brocstedes Park, was admitted to the Lancashire Combination, before they become a founder member of the North West Counties League when the Combination merged with the Cheshire league in 1982. Unfortunately financial constraints prevented the required ground improvements to be completed, and the club was relegated into the Manchester league Division One in 1986. The drop of two leagues resulted in the majority of the playing staff moving to other clubs and for numerous years the club endeavoured to re-build. Players came and went, lacking the club loyalty that had brought success to the club in the 1970`s and early 80`s until the committee embraced an ambitious youth development policy in 1999. The club is now at the end of a ten-year development plan which was created to enhance its recreational facilities and expand the club, in particular its junior section. 8 years ago the club had 2 teams, 50 members, 1 mediocre pitch with dilapidated clubhouse and changing rooms. The main pitch was re-drained, a second pitch acquired/improved, new changing rooms and Clubhouse built, disabled access provided and other improvements made to the grounds. The 2008/2009 season also sees a further progression of the club, having been promoted to the Premier Division of the North West Counties League. They will again take to the national stage, having been accepted in the FA Cup competition after last season`s debut in the FA Vase which proved very lucrative for the club, progressing through 3 stages and beating 2 teams from higher leagues in the process. Last season also saw cup success for the club retaining the Atherton Charity Cup at the end of the season. A new vision for the club is under discussion to further develop the club and these will include plans for improvements to the access road, new junior changing rooms, and additional playing fields for the junior section and a proposed girls/ladies section. The main ground is also scheduled for enhancement works with additional covered spectator areas.

ASHTON ATHLETIC

CURRENT FORM

THIS SEASON

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to todays North West Counties Premier Division game between Squires Gate and Ashton Athletic. We extend a warm welcome to today’s visitors and hope they enjoy their time here and have a safe journey home. This time last season, we were enjoying a good cup run down at Bamber Bridge, which you can read about in our programme feature ‘ A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE’ as we take a look back at how a man of the match performance from Ben Fletcher and a wonder strike from Andy Richards earned us a replay with the Evo Stick side. This time round though, our FA Cup run was ended by Barton Town Old Boys, where we were beaten after 210 minutes of football. For me, we should of wrapped up the game in the first half of the original game where we had complete control of the game but just couldn’t finish our chances and were punished in the second half as we let a two goal led slip. Onto the league, and we are still yet to pick up a league win. After a fantastic pre season, beating National League side Altrincham 2-1, and picking up an 8-0 win against Lostock, it’s fair to say supporters were expecting to carry on from the end of last season. August saw us pick up ONE draw and FOUR defeats, conceding 12 and scoring 5. 1874 Northwich & AFC Liverpool away from home were never going to be easy to get wins. But with 2 home games against newly promoted sides, with no disrespect to Atherton Collieries or Cammell Laird, we should of at least picked up 2 points but instead we suffered a 4-3 defeat against Atherton and a 2-2 draw with the latter. Barnoldswick Town have surprised a few this season, battling on at the top end of the table after finishing 19th last season. Taking nothing away from Barlick’s fantastic start, they were also beaten quite heavily in a 5-0 defeat to Colne in the cup. In the league, they have only suffered ONE league defeat which was a 4-3 loss to Congleton Town. They are now on a FIVE game winning run, going into today’s game with 4th placed Nelson. Onto today’s visitors ASHTON ATHLETIC. It’s been a surprising start for the ashes, as they have also had a slow start to the new campaign, winning TWO of their opening SIX league games, and haven’t won since their 1-0 win over last season’s runners up RUNCORN LINNETS. I’m sure that Ashton will soon pick up their form and get the wins needed to climb the table. Ashton were the first team to beat Gate last season, in a 2-1 victory here at the end of August. Ashton have won 3 of the last 4 meetings, including a 4-0 victory in February. DAVE MCCANN will be without top scorer Josh Kay as he picked up a groin injury at Irlam on Tuesday night that has put him out for at least 2 weeks. Higgins may also be a doubt as he picked up a red card in the original vase game for a rational challenge on a Irlam defender. McKendrick is still out with an injury also. Enjoy the game.

SQUIRES GATE 0-1 ASHTON ATHLETIC Sat 23 November, 2013

GATE DISAPPOINTED WITH DECISION They talk a lot about luck and not getting decisions in football and for the second time in two home games Gate were denied a goal by a dubious offside decision and a stonewall penalty that even the special one would agree with. Jack Sowerby used his pace on 15 minutes to latch onto a through ball from midfield, he tucked it under the keeper well, only to see the assistant referee had raised his flag when he was clearly onside. Craig Carney played a neat one two with Seydou Bamba on 25 minutes, Carney shot but Jason Foulds in the Ashton net pulled off a great one handed save. On 35 minutes Gate should have gone one up when Sowerby broke free of his marker on the half way line, with Cook and Carney in support in a three on one Sowerby passed the ball in between the pair and neither were decisive enough to strike until Ashton had men back to snub out the danger. Two minutes later Ashton had their best chance of the game so far when striker Ryan Small sent a low drive across the six yard box which just evaded finding any Ashton players. Small came close to opening the scoring but for a point blank save from keeper Ben Fletcher and a goal line clearance from Gate captain Andy Richards. 60 seconds into the second half and the impressive Sowerby started as bright as he had the first, driving into the penalty area before being brought down in a heap. Gate players and management were dismayed as the referee waived play on. On 49 and 52 minutes Ashton keeper Fouldes denied Carney. Firstly with a great save low down and then with his feet to deny a certain goal. Despite creating the bulk of the chances Gate fell behind in the game on 65 minutes when the defence allowed Richard Livingston to enter the area unchallenged and gave him time and space to pick his spot. On 67 minutes Seydou Bamba found the ball at his feet on the edge of the area and an empty net, after the Ashton keepers clearance hit Sowerby on the back but the away side recovered just in time to block Bamba's shot. Ashton's Sam Bailey could have made the last 20 minutes more comfortable for his side when he found himself unmarked in the box but his left foot volley went wide and then just 60 seconds later he shot just inches

GATE SURVIVE ON FINAL DAY Squires Gate ended the 2013/14 away at Ashton Athletic, in need of three points, knowing anything less could just send them down. Manager Dave McCann knew exactly what he needed his team to do in what has gone down as one of Gate’s most memorable matches. It was a bright but windy day and the visitors had to face the strong wind in the first half. With only 8 minutes gone, it was a nightmare start for Squires Gate as keeper Dave Rodgerson bought down Ben Kay inside the box, which the referee judged to be a penalty and a booking for Rodgerson. Up stepped Ben Kay, and he converted it, which made Gate’s battle to stay up even harder. They now had to find TWO goals against a good, defensive Ashton Athletic side who sat fourth in the league. Surely, it was no contest now... Gate pushed forward and Seydou Bamba was linking well with Zack Clark down the left, while David Rodgerson, was making saves and keeping it solid at the back. Bringing off three great saves in a five minute spell, Jack Sowerby was unlucky with a couple of shots, the home keeper making saves to hold out the visitors. But on the 36th Minute, skipper Daniel Penswick out jumped the defence, and headed home Jack Sowerby’s corner kick, sending the teams in for the break on level terms. But everyone knew a draw wasn’t enough, and Gate needed a win to survive another season in the Premier Division. The second half was all out determination from Squires Gate, with every player lifting their game, and the reward came on the 86th minute when Jack Sowerby got a free kick 30yards out. His shot was sweet and true, and was in the back of the net before the home keeper could dive towards it. The home side mounted a fight to get on level terms, taking advantage of Gate pushing forward. But on the occasions they were able to get a shot on goal Rodgerson was there to save. Both sides battled to the final whistle, and Gate celebrated a well deserved victory and they would be playing Premier Division football in the 2014/15 season. After the game, a jubilant Squires Gate Chairman

This week we spoke to Peter Barton from Ashton Athletic, who gave his opinions on today’s game and their chances this season. How are you looking to progress on last seasons 5th placed finish? Do you think you have a strong enough squad to push on for promotion this season? PB: “I think with a good start, we can push for top 4 finish. If we finish some of the chances that we create then we have a good chance of being in the mix at the end of the season. Hopefully we’ll have a good run in the MEN United cup, too. Ashton finished a place above Squires Gate last season, and only one of the only teams to do the double over Gate. Do you think that it could happen again this season? PB: “It could happen, and with being a yellow I hope we can and I’m sure the Gate fans will hope to do the double over us, but with this being an unpredictable league, anything could happen. Anyone can beat anyone on their day.

Squires Gate have had a slow start to this campaign, still yet to pick up a league win. How do you think they will get on this season? PB: “One good win can start a winning run. I think Gate will finish in a solid mid-table position.” What players do you think will cause the most threat for opposition this season? PB: “All our players have the ability to produce a match winning performance. I don’t think I can single any one player out.”

What was the best moment and game that you have ever seen? PB: “Definitely winning the NWCFL Challenge Cup in the 13/14 season. It was my first full season as club photographer.” What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? PB: “I’m looking forward to playing Cammell Laird 1907 for the first time this season. I look forward to each game as it comes and enjoy travelling to each ground.” What’s your prediction for today’s game? PB: “Gate 1-2 Ashton Athletic”

Thank you Peter for taking your time to answer our questions.

ONE STEP CLOSER TO WEMBLEY Tuesday 8th September 2015 Report by Mark Ashmore. Pictures by Albert Cooper Squires Gate travelled to Manchester on Tuesday night as they took on Irlam in the FA Vase. The two sides previously met last Saturday where the result was 2-2 after extra time. Ash Rowley was unlucky not to open the scoring for Gate after 7 minutes. A good run from McKenna down the right hand side and his ball in found Rowley but his shot was deflected out for a corner. the resulting corner for Gate was headed over the bar by Westwood. It would be Irlam who would open the scoring though, a brilliant ball down the left was eventually crossed in. Three Irlam players were waiting in the box with one of them stepping forward to slot the ball past Fletcher. The lively Rowley had the chance to level things up for Gate when the ball was ruled back to him on the edge of the box but his shot went over the bar. Irlam had the next chance this time straight from the goal kick. There ball going over the defences heads but Irlams striker put the ball wide. Gate had a penalty shout after 35 minutes when Ash Rowley was cleared out in the box by the keeper but the ref felt the ball was won much to the surprise of the players on the pitch. Gate would keep the pressure on the home side and equal up the game after 38 minutes. the free kick fired onto Westwood’s head who knocked the ball over to the waiting Cummings. He stretched to poke Gate level. Gate had the chance to make it two with two minutes left but Mckenna’s header was cleared off the line. Gate started the second half like they’d ended the first. Richards with the free kick after a good run from McKenna but the set piece was saved. McKenna was again involved, the ball played over to him and with the defender missing the header, his follow up shot just clipped the post. Gate took the lead on 67 minutes after Mckennas cross was sliced into his own net by the unfortunate defender. Gate would make it two soon after, Ash Rowley closing down the back past to the defender and the keeper bought Rowley down with a penalty being awarded. Mark Buchan stepped up and coolly slotted past the keeper to score his second in two games and put Gate 3-1 up. The home side had a chance with 6 minutes left but Fletcher kept Gate in the game. Sub Clarke almost had the chance to open his account for the club after good work

A WINNING START SQUIRES GATE 8-2 CLIFTON RANGERS It was a winning start for our under 13’s side, as they played their first league game against local team Clifton Rangers on Sunday 6th September. They went into the game on the back of a 7-0 win in a friendly against Longsands, and manager Mick Bishop said this after the game. “I am happy with the result, the boys are young and haven’t played on this pitch before, so every credit to them playing some great flowing football throughout the game. The game got a bit sloppy towards the end, with opponents getting through the middle easily, but saying that the game was already won by then.” Man of the match: Connah Trevelyan

SQUIRES GATE 9-0 ST ANNES The boys were left frustrated after making an early breakthrough after Brogan Grundy scored his first of the game. As the half grew on pressure applied on the St. Annes goal was being dealt with by the impressive goalkeeper. With 15 minutes of the half left a swift breakaway saw Josh DolbyArmstrong score. Then a clever bit of play between both goalscorers saw Grundy lob the oncoming keeper. Final goal of the half came when a good piece of work from Luca Greenwood found Grundy at the back post who finished for his hattrick. Second half was a more satisfiying display. Pressing high and keeping the ball moving meant it was difficult for the opposition to break out. Impressive goals came from Luca Stefani, Nathan Nicholas and Dimitri Jackson. McKenzie Webster scored after the ball trickled over the line following a fine forward run and well placed shot. However the goal of the game went to ex St. Annes forward Luke Myers with a fine effort from outside of the box that flew into the top corner. Man Of The Match: Lucas Miler

BAMBER BRIDGE 2-2 SQUIRES GATE Saturday 13th September 2014

WONDERSTRIKE FROM RICO EARNS REPLAY FOR GATE Squires Gate travelled the short distance down the M55 to Bamber Bridge for their 1st qualifying round in the FA Cup. Bamber Bridge sat 6th in the Evo Stick Division One North and beat Stocksbridge Park Steels in the last round to set up this tie. Gate started the better of the two sides and could have gone ahead early on, after good work down the left from the returning Harry Dunn, he set up Billy McKenna but his shot was blocked and cleared by the Bridge defence. Bridge had the chance to hit back, Joseph Mullen taking aim from outside the box but his shot didn't trouble Fletcher in net. It's fair to say that in the first half Gate keeper Ben fletcher was man of the match, he made several top quality saves with all parts of his body to deny the home side. Gate had the next chance after being awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, Bridge's Matt Lawlor caught the ball after thinking a foul had been awarded but was instead penalised for handball. Gate couldn't capitalise from the awarded free kick after sending the ball straight into the grateful keepers hands. A mix up in the Gate defence allowed Andy Bell to score after the ball wasn't cleared from the six yard box, Bell pounced to score past keeper Ben Fletcher. Moving through what was a fairly even first half Gate had their next chance after a dominant spell of possession from the home side. Andy Richards found the ball 40 yards out and burst forward, passing two players he let fly straight into the top corner on 35 minutes from 25 yards out. Gate could have gone ahead soon after, but Billy McKenna's cross was taken off the toe of sub Hothersall by keeper Lee Dovey.

Into the second half and it was clear the home side had had a telling off at half time, they re-entered the field with determined faces and started the better of the two sides. The lively Alistair Waddecar cut inside Gate's defence but his early shot was fired into the crowd behind the goal. Gate's next chance came on the break from defending a corner. The ball falling to Hothersall and with him and McKenna bursting forward Hothersall couldn't find the right angle and a golden chance was wasted for Gate. The next chance fell to the home side who were awarded a penalty. A silly foul in the box from Josh Westwood allowed Andy Bell to step up but his drive could only find a fans head behind the goal. Good work by front men Riley and Sowerby created Gate's next chance but the latters shot fired high over the goal after a cut back from Riley. Gate's clinicalness really cost them in this game with plenty of chances during the afternoon but their finishing let them
