MCCANN Good evening and welcome to the Royal British Legion Stadium for our 2nd home league fixture of the season against Atherton Collieries. May I welcome all associated with Colls and wish you a safe journey home. Saturday saw us pick up our first league point of the season and by all accounts it was a hard earned but deserved point. Lairds were a good side but we stood up to them and showed a few small signs of how we need to be this season if we are to be successful. I feel that we are far from our best so far and it has been a tough start, however, without any excuses we need to raise our game quickly and begin to perform at the levels we are capable of. This evening we look to build on Saturdays point against a very successful and strong Colls side. From an outsider looking in it seems a very different club compared to when I was assistant manager under Phil Brown back in 2006/07, however, some things never change and I'll be looking forward to a quick chat with some of the committee that are still with the club after all those years. It's a club very much but on togetherness and spirit which goes a long way to building success. Tonight I hope we can show our togetherness as a side and stand up to the challenges that Colls will give us. We will need to win individual battles across all areas of the pitch if we are to be successful. Thank you once again for your support and I hope to see you at School Road for our next home fixture.

THE MANAGER

DAVE

Ben Fletcher (Available for sponsorship) Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. Kept numerous clean sheets and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form.

Chris Anderson (Available for sponsorship) Chris made his league debut on the first game of last season. A versatile player that has a wand of a left foot. Some impressive performances saw him awarded ‘Coaches Player of the season’ last year. A key player in the side that influences others around him.

Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship) After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the 2015/16 season.

Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd) One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the Year 2014/15.

Wes Benjamin (Available for sponsorship) Wes is a highly promising defender that arrives in time for the start of the 2015/16 season. He has experience playing in National League North football but is looking to develop through regular football with Squires Gate. Wes is comfortable playing at both centre back or right back and can even play in midfield if needed.

Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship) A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.

Josh Westwood (Available for sponsorship) Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.

Terry Cummings (Available for sponsorship) Terry is a graduate of Myerscough College. He made his debut on the opening day of this season against 1874 Northwich. He is a forward player capable of playing across the front of any of the attacking positions in midfield. With bags of skill and ability, he’ll be hoping to make his mark on the season at the earliest opportunity.

Keiffer Cunningham (Available for sponsorship) Kiefer is a very promising young player that can play in numerous attacking positions. He made a limited number of appearances last year due to work commitments but is hoping to make a big impact this season. A young prospect with plenty to offer.

Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was beneficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.

Josh Kay(Available for sponsorship) One of the youngest players in the squad that broke into the first team ranks at the end of last season. Very talented player with a strong personality which makes him ideal for non league football. Very bright future ahead of him if he stays focused and learns from others around him.

Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship) Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.

Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship) The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a big influence on games when in the mood.

Ashley Rowley (Available for sponsorship) Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact this season.

Danny Penswick (Available for sponsorship) Danny is the captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.

Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship) Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this season.

Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship) Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in 2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.

MEET GATE

Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship)

Saturday 22nd August 2015 Report by Mark Ashmore. Gate made a great start to the game and took the lead after 2 minutes of the first half. The ball was sent forward to Josh Westwood who's flick on found the run of Terry Cummings he controlled the ball and in a swift motion fired the ball to put Gate into an early lead. Gate were back on the attack again shortly after taking the lead with Josh Kay on the left but his through ball was cut out before it could reach Josh Westwood. Lairds had their first chance after 20 minutes but star striker Craig Cairns saw his chipped shot fall the wrong side of the post. Gate had the chance to double their lead through first Josh Kay then Alex Mckendrick but the ball was scrambled away for a corner. What followed was a good spell of play from Lairds. The visitors could have equalised through Gibiliru but his shot was saved well by Fletcher for Gate. The visitors would find the equaliser 2 minutes before half time, the free kick given away by Richards in the far corner led to the ball being crossed into the back post from the free kick and Ferrigan making it all level. Lairds didn't hang around and with one of the last kicks of the first half they took the lead. Gibiliru finding space in the box to extend Lairds lead into the break. Gate again made a good start to the half just as they did in the first and after 3 minutes made the game level. Good work by Josh Kay on the left to beat his man before chipping over the onrushing keeper which seemed to take an age to drop to level the game. Lairds had the chance to counter 20 minutes into the second half but good work from Richards and Benjamin cut out the danger. What followed was a battle in the middle of the pitch with both midfields seeing alot of the ball both trying to create something for either team. Sub Ash Rowley had a good run down the left beating his marker but his shot was well saved by the keeper as Gate pilled on the pressure. Lairds best chance of the closing stages of the game came late on but Wes Benjamin was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball off the line.

Nickname: “Colls”

Capacity: 2,500

Founded: 1916

Manager: Michael Clegg

Ground: Alder House Stadium

2014/15 Position: 1 st (Division 1 )

In the 2001–02 season they reached the final of the North West Counties League Cup for the first time, losing to Prescot Cables in a close game. The same season, they won the Bolton Wanderers-sponsored Goldline Trophy final against Charnock Richard at the Reebok Stadium. Colls won 1–0 with a goal from Nicky Fisher. The following season, Colls once again made it to the final of the Goldline Trophy but this time had to settle for runners-up. They also reached the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. Colls suffered mixed fortunes during their tenure in the top flight of the North West Counties Football League. In the 2005–06 season it took an impressive run of results towards the end of the season for them to pull clear of relegation. However, at the end of the season, manager Alan Lord resigned. The club's upturn in fortunes during the 2006–07 season owed a lot to the Football Development Centre (FDC) at Myerscough College on The Fylde in Lancashire, where Phil Brown was the FDC manager and his managerial assistant Dave McCann was the coach. The link-up saw an influx of young players from the college's under-19 side, giving them a chance to develop their footballing talent at non-league level with Atherton Collieries.Phil Brown was subsequently appointed as the new manager. In the 2006–07 season they fielded a reserve team in the Lancashire League (West) Reserve Division, competing against opposition from the reserve teams of Conference and Northern Premier League clubs. That season also saw the club's highest league position when they finished in seventh place of the NWCFL Premier Division. During the season their best performance came against league leaders FC United of Manchester in November 2006 when they inflicted a 3–0 defeat on the Red Rebels, with a hat-trick from Anthony Pilkington, who moved into the professional game with Stockport County on 15 December 2006, initially on a short term contract. The following season saw a new first team manager, Dave Conlon, and a new assistant, Dave Chapman, and several new players joined the club. Colls enjoyed a good start to the season; however in September, the club's unbeaten run of seventeen games, stretching back to March 2007, came to an end with defeat against Maine Road in the league. Colls finished the season in fifteenth place Atherton Collieries were relegated to Division One at the end of the 2008–09 season after finishing

ATHERTON COLLIERIES

Colls joined the North West Counties Football League as a founder member in 1982–83, winning the Third Division in 1986–87. The 1992–93 season saw the club's best run in the FA Vase when they reached the third round, where they lost to Southern League club Bridgnorth Town 4–0. In the 1994–95 season they reached the third qualifying round of the FA Cup, beating Northern Counties East Football League Division One club Blidworth Welfare in the preliminary round in a replay 3–1 after the clubs had drawn the first game. In the first qualifying round they beat Buxton of the Northern Premier League 2–0 at Alder House, before losing to another Northern Premier League club, Guiseley, 1–0 in the third qualifying round. Steady progress off the pitch, with ground improvements being completed in 1994, was matched by progress on the pitch as they had continued to finish higher in the league each season. This culminated in promotion to the First Division after finishing the 1995–96 season as runners-up to Vauxhall GM.

Squires Gate reserves kicked off a new era at School Road, as they hosted Portuguese side Academica The reserves were formed earlier this year and accepted into the Lancashire Galaxy League along sides the likes of AFC Fylde and Workington. This fixture is the first for the reserves and the first time Squires Gate have hosted International opponents. Many of the reserve side have been training with the first team in the past couple of weeks but this was the first time they would play together in a competitive game. There were two familiar faces in the line up as Josh Kay and Keifer Cunningham, who weren't involved on Tuesday, started for the reserves. The first 10 minutes of the game saw both teams retain possession of the ball and sound each other out. Academica had the first chance after 15 minutes but the free kick was fired wide of the post not testing the keeper. Gate had a chance of their own five minutes later but Waters who was played through fired over the net. What followed was two half chances for Academica, first the ball was cleared off the line by Benjamin from number 19's header, then Bleaker got down to save well as the number 9 ran clear. The first half was full of half chances but neither team really found a real chance.

GATE HOST ACADEMICA

At half time the managers chose to make changes to the team to give other players chance to impress. Academica opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second half. A good ball to the back post found Mingachos who controlled the ball with a touch of class before firing the Portuguese side into the lead. Soon after it was Gate who were on the attack a clever ball from Josh Kay found the run of Waters who follow up shot rebounded back off the post. Unfortunalty for Gate it was from this attack that the visitors went 2-0 up. Academica countered down the other end of the pitch in quick fashion with Edu rounding of the move to put them 2-0 up. A positive factor for Gates young team was that no one's heads dropped after the second goal went in. If anything conceding spurred the reserves on to really attack the game in search for at least one goal. Gates best chance came late on, a good cross from Kay found Benjamin but after cleverly controlling the ball he fired wide.

We caught up with Atherton Collieries media officer Joseph Gibbons, and asked him a few questions about today’s opposition. After being promoted from the first division, how do you rate your chances for this season? Do you feel that you have a good enough squad to stay up, or even to push for a top half finish? “I have no doubt at all that we will stay up; the thought of a relegation battle hasn’t even crossed any of our minds. We have played a number of Premier Division sides in cup competitions over the past year, and other than losing to Glossop North End we didn’t taste defeat. This would suggest that we are more than capable of competing in this division and I am confident that we will do. We have never finished higher than seventh in this division,, so better than that this year would be fantastic. We have a very young side and every week the players are learning more and gaining experience. In a few years time we will be able to see a number of players from this side playing at a higher level.” Squires Gate finished 6th last season, but have had a slow start to this campaign. Do you think that Atherton Collieries will have enough to beat Gate tonight? We have had a mixed start to the season, but we will accept it and move on to tonight’s match. We deservedly beat West Didsbury away from home on the opening day of the season, before losing at home to Padiham two days later. That was the first time we had lost a competitive match at home since March last year. We were leading 2-0 in that match before Padiham fought back and deservedly won 4-2. We bounced back with a 2-0 win at Bootle in the FA Cup before beating Maine Road 4-3 at home. Our latest match was on Saturday where we lost 3-1 to a very organised and competitive 1874 Northwich side.

On paper, I would argue that we have been handed a very tough start as have Squires Gate, so in that sense we’re both yet to see our sides settle and get into the swing of things. I’m hoping that we can put Saturday’s defeat behind us and put in a good performance tonight to take us into the FA Cup match at Brighouse in high spirit and high confidence. Which team are you most looking forward to going up against this season? I’ll be honest, there are no fixtures that get me immediately excited when I look at the full list. We don’t have our derbies against Atherton Laburnum Rovers or Daisy Hill to enjoy this season. Even our Easter Monday and Boxing Day matches aren’t against a side who we have a rivalry with. From a groundhopping perspective I’m looking forward to our trips to Colne, Silsden and Barnoldswick as I haven't ventured up in that direction yet.

We were fortunate in that sense that it was such a fantastic season, there are so many memories. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing us beat Atherton Laburnam Rovers THREE times, ultimately gaining promotion at their ground. I would say I enjoyed seeing us win the league at Cheadle, but a few beers were had throughout the day and most of it became a bit of a blur. For me, other than that winning the league and the Bolton Hospital Cup. I really enjoyed our pre season trip to Whitley Bay. We had just assembled a new squad with our management team and it was a day used to get to know each other. All of the players and fans crammed on to a coach, travelled all the way to Newcastle and back and we had a huge party during the journey back home. Which of your players will off the most threat this season? Mark Battersby scored nearly 70 goals in all competitions for us last campaign. The striker missed our first three matches of the season as he was serving a suspension picked up during the NWCFL final against Glossop North End. Battersby is one of the best players to have ever played in the NWCFL, and on his day he is totally unplayable Our defender Jake Kenny is another player who will play a key part in the team this season. He is able to play at both right back and left back and consistently puts in solid performances. I hope I haven’t set him up for a fall after that billing!

What is your prediction for tonight? I hate predicting our results! I think after our disappointing second half display on Saturday, our players will be up for it tonight so hopefully we can get a win. There have been a lot of goals in Colls’ matches as of late, so I’ll go for a tight low scoring 2-1 win for Colls. Thanks Joe, for taking your time to send us your thoughts.
