FROM THE DUGOUT
DANIEL PENSWICK “ATHERTON CAN CREATE GOALS FROM ANYWHERE ON THE PITCH...WE HAVE TO BE AT THE TOP OF OUR GAME” Good afternoon everyone,
Tonight we welcome one of the league favourites, Atherton Collieries in what should be another exciting game at The Royal British Legion Stadium. I would like to welcome the Colls committee, players and fans to Squires Gate and I hope you have a safe journey home. For me Colls should win the league, they have a great spine, creativity in wide areas and the second best striker in the league. They like to attack and attack with pace which is always a challenge for any defence. We did well when we went there back in August and competed well with them and managed to get a fantastic away point which saw us go top of the league at the time. Atherton can create goals from anywhere on the pitch so we will have to be at the top of our game, and not allow them space or time on the ball to get into a good position. Cleggys doing a great job and the club is really gearing itself up for Evo Stick football in the not too distant future. I Whilst Saturday's result wasn't what we wanted I still felt there were lots of positives to be taken. We were unfortunate not to come away with the 3 points in the end with Ric having his goal chalked off but we will have to move on from that and concentrate on the next couple of games which will be important for our season.
With games coming up against the likes of Chorley in the Lancashire Cup, Runcorn Town who currently sit top of the league and are on unbelievable form, and AFC Liverpool. We will need a fully fit side, but with the strength in depth that we have at the club now I’m sure we will have a high competition for places. Our speed of play was better on Saturday, we moved the ball quicker which is vital when you try and play the way we do. I'm hoping that we can maintain that intensity and keep creating chances. It's always nice to test yourselves against one of the best teams in the league so let's hope we can respond with a strong combative and creative performance. Up the Gate.

Gate made a good start to the game and had their first chance after just three minutes. Ric Seear was played through into the box, he cut the ball back to his strike partner Buchan but the Scot's shot dribbled wide of the post. The visitors then had a chance of their own on eight minutes. They got the ball out wide to the right winger but his cross across goal flew straight through to the back post and out. Gate would take the lead after 11 minutes. The ball falling to the feet of Andrew Richards, he poked it towards goal, then Paul Alexander back heeled the ball past the keeper to give Gate the lead. Jamie Gibson then did well to when he was found in the box on 15 minutes but his cross was cleared with Ric Seear ready to pounce just behind the defender. Gate then had yet another chance from a freekick just outside the box, unfortunately Ryan Riley's header could only find the top of the net. Irlam had a great chance of their own after 32 minutes but luckily for Gate, failed at the last minute. The striker finding his way through and one on one with Ben Fletcher but he slipped at the vital moment allowing Fletcher to easily pick up the ball. Down the other end and it was Gate who could have doubled their lead with three minutes of the first half left. Mark Buchan put a low cross into the box which was almost scored by an Irlam defender who had his keeper to thank for a brilliant save with his foot. It was the visitors who started the second of with the momentum, in fact the first ten minutes was all them but Gate did very well to deal with any threat put their way. The second half was much more even and became very much an end to end game. First Ric Seear was sent through on 58 minutes but his shot was fired straight at the keeper. Then Irlam had a freekick, that was fired into the near post but Lawler fired the ball wide. Gate had a great set of chances on 70 minutes with several players taking aim. First Ric Seear's shot was pushed wide before Ricahrds clipped the crossbar trying to chip the keeper. Two minutes later sub Brett Dawson played in Ric Seear but his shot was deflected wide. That deflection fell into the path of Jamie Gibson but his unbalanced shot fell wide of the post. Irlam would level the game in the last ten minutes. Too easy for them down the left hand side for the winger to cross in for an easy tap in at the back post. Irlam battled well in the second half and perhaps did deserve a goal in the game but Gate had plenty of their own chances to win the game. The game ended in controversy with four minutes left with Gate having a perfectly good goal ruled out. Ben Seear firing the ball in at the back post only to be flagged for offside. Even though Irlam had two men behind the ball on the goal line, Seear was supposedly offside.

WE’VE MET BEFORE? SQUIRES GATE 3 ATHERTON COLLIERIES 4 TUESDAY 25TH AUGUST 2015 After a close opening first 5 minutes the visitors were awarded a penalty. The linesman flagging for a handball in the box. Colls striker Mark Battersby converted the spot kick to open the scoring on 6 minutes. Gates first chance of the half came from Terry Cummings but his cross couldn't find the head of Alex McKendrick at the back post.Josh Kay had a chance to continue his fine form but his shot was saved at the near post. 10 minutes before he first Gate would concede a second winger Ben Hardcaste aloud to much time and his shot found the bottom corner. Josh Kay looked lively for Gate in the first half and his shot on 30 minutes was just wide for Gate. Alex McKendrick would get a goal back for Gate with a beautiful shot into the top of the net. It would be Hardcastle again who lost his marker in the box this time and fired under the unfortunate Fletcher in net. Gate would find the net just before half time Fergusons cross to the back post found Josh Westwood unmarked to head Gate a vital goal going into half time. Josh Westwood had the chance to score again after half time after a clever chip in from Kay Westwood couldn't find the finish. Sub Ash Rowley had the next chance after Westwood flicked the ball on but Rowleys shot past the goal keeper was cleared off the line before it could reach the net. Colls had the next chance but the cross from the right hand side was cut out by Danny Penswick. A superb drive forward from Benjamin at Centre back found Cummings on the edge of the box he turned but was judged to have been fouled. Captain Danny Penswick stepped up to to bring the game level. Good work from Gate keeper Ben Fletcher again kept Gate in the game with a superb save. Poor defending from Gate saw sub James Kirby score what would be the winning goal. As much as Gate tried they couldn't find a way through in the last 10 even with 4 up front for long periods of the game
ATHERTON COLLIERIES 5 SQUIRES GATE 2 MONDAY 19TH OTCOBER 2015 It was a much better start compared to Saturday, with the first chance falling to Gate midfielder Joe Noblet, who was unable to cut inside the Colls defence to get a shot on target. Rowley had a chance to break the deadlock with a quick counter attack from a Colls corner which led to a three on two situation, but the defender got there just in time. The home side started to show their attacking threat and after constant attacks, they started to open up the Gate defence, forcing mistakes from Colquhoun and Trout. It took only 15 minutes until the resilience was broken, when Colls were awarded a corner and the ball was headed in by debutant Callum Jones who was unmarked at the back post. It's something Gate supporters have seen quite a lot this season. Atherton were not allowing the away side anywhere near the ball, with short tidy passes around the midfield, they eventually got the ball to the left wing only to put the ball over the bar. Fletcher showed his quality when he denied Colls a second on the half hour mark. Buchan had a fantastic chance to draw Gate level 5 minutes before the break but was unable to direct his header into the back of the net. Colls striker Mark Battersby was causing problems for the defence as he flicked the ball over Richards' head only to be denied by Fletcher again. Only one goal separated the two teams at half time. There were two goals in the first ten minutes of the restart, the first came when Colls were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, where Mark Truffas doubled the hosts lead from the set piece. Squires Gate found themselves back in the game when Noblet hit an unstoppable free kick into the top corner, out of the keepers reach. Trout came close to scoring Gates equaliser but his header was pushed over by the Colls keeper. Just as the visitors were getting themselves into the game, Atherton added another. A poor headed clearance could only find the feet of a Colls player who calmly slotted the ball away to make it 3-1, and the hosts made it 4-1 less than two minutes later. A cross from the left wing was tapped in
from five yards. Ryan Riley headed home a consolation goal for Gate but Hardcastle put the game to bed 5 minutes from time.

Atherton Collieries Football Club was established in 1916 by miners from the six pits which were then operative within the old urban district of Atherton. The football club became the latest part of an ever growing sports group that was organised by the Atherton Collieries Joint Association. Between 1919 and 1965 the club were winners of the Bolton Combination League ten times. Collieries established a noted reputation in Lancashire and by 1964 -65 had won the Lancashire Junior Shield six times, a record which is still unsurpassed. They joined the North West Counties League as founder members in 1982, winning the third division in 1986-87. Steady progress off the pitch, with floodlights being erected in 1994, was matched by progress on the pitch as Colls final league position improved season on season.. The club were relegated from the Premier Division at the end of the 2008/09 campaign and Steve Pilling was appointed manager in August 2009. In 2010/11 the club won their first NWCFL silverware for decades when AFC Liverpool were beaten 3-2 (aet) in the First Division Trophy Final at Valley Road, Flixton. Season 2011/12 saw the club finish fourth in the First Division but another trophy was added to the honours board. The Bolton Hospital Cup was won for the first time in 25 years with a penalty shootout triumph over Eagley. The Reebok final had ended 2-2 with Gary Burnett scoring both Collieries goals as he put in a man of the match performance. Michael Clegg took over the managerial reins at the commencement of the 2014/15 campaign. Despite their best efforts, Colls couldn’t overcome a strong and experienced opposition and lost 2-0. The First Division Trophy saw Collieries beat Atherton LR in the First Round with a hard fought victory in testing conditions. Barnton and Litherland REMYCA were also seen off which took Clegg’s side into the final against AFC Darwen at Bootle. The Salmoners won 3-1 to break Colls hearts. A further final followed the next week. This time it was the Men United Cup. Having beaten Cheadle Town, Ashton Athletic, Abbey Hey, Colne and Runcorn Town the Colls came up against Premier Division champions and FA Vase finalists Glossop North End. Brad Cooke and Mark Battersby were sent off in the final and Collieries ultimately lost 2-0. Back in the Premier Division for the first time in six years, Collieries managed to finish third behind Runcorn Linnets and Colne. The League Challenge Cup was also won for the first time, convincingly beating league champions Colne in the final on an unforgettable night at Fleetwood Town's Highbury Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT
SANDBACH 1 ATHERTON COLLS 2 SATURDAY 29TH OCTOBER 2016/MARCON CUP ROUND 2/ SANDBACH COMMUNITY FOOTBALL CENTRE Jamie Forbes and Jordan Cover replaced Jake Kenny and Mark Battersby from the previous outing against Jarrow Roofing BCA and started on the front foot. Unfortunately Vinny Bailey’s square ball to the free Cover ten yards from goal was just behind him. The hosts took advantage of their reprieve and started to play some neat football while Colls struggled to keep possession. Colls shot stopper Adam Reid continued his fine form with a couple of vital saves. This Atherton Collieries outfit are always dangerous though and took the lead just after the half hour mark. Attractive approach play saw the ball at the feet of Cover and his daisy cutter from the edge of the box found the far right corner of the onion bag. The goal did not deter United and they equalised on the stroke of half time. An over ambitious ball out of defence was intercepted, the subsequent punt into the Colls penalty area wasn’t dealt with allowing the lively Daniel Bartle an easy finish.

Bartle was on fire and he was unlucky not to grab his second early in the second period. His shot from distance beat Reid all ends up but it smashed against the crossbar. Colls had to step up a gear or their reign would be over and they reacted positively. On 51 minutes Cover left the United defence in his wake before taking the ball round the keeper. He sidefooted home with ease. A Jordan Cover special. The goal galvanised Colls and the lead should have been increased. Unfortunately Bailey unselfishly tried to tee Cover up for his hat-trick who shot wide with the goal gaping. Both teams continued to create chances, Justin Pickering’s effort from out wide which grazed the top of the crossbar was the pick. Colls saw the game out for a dogged 2-1 victory. Sandbach played their full part in the proceedings and should have gone into the interval leading. Their future looks rosy and a finishing position in the play offs at least is on the cards. Colls were never at their most fluent (credit to Sandbach) but did just enough to win the game. The victory sets up a 3rd round clash at Nelson at the back end of November. The final mention goes to Bradley Cooke who made his 200th competitive appearance for the club. He was presented with a memento after to the game to a chorus of ‘We love you Bradley we do’. A proud moment for both player and club. Match report by Emil Anderson
VIEW FROM AWAY End
EMIL ANDERSON
Colls fan Emil Anderson gives us an insight into life at Atherton, here is what he had to say about their promotion chances and which Premier League players he would sign for Colls if he was given a blank cheque. What are your expectations for the season after your 3rd place finished last year? Our best ever NWCFL finish and the Men United Cup win was the icing on the cake. The division has four or five teams who can win it and we are defo one of them. Runcorn Town are a few points clear at the top and must be the current favourites. What improvements do you think need to be made to improve on last seasons finish? We got 84 points last season and we are on target to do that again. We conceded a few too many goals last year. I think we have improved our goals against so far. After a good start to your season what do u expected for the rest season? Cleggy has got a good squad which is capable of challenging for honours. I haven't got a crystal ball to see into the future though. You are one of the favourites to win the league. Do you think you have what it takes to get promotion? I think we have what it takes. What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? None in particular. I get nervous for every game. Any grounds that you enjoy visiting? My favourite ground is in the first division - Eccleshall. I love the everything about that place. I also like a Saturday afternoon coach trip to Holker. If it was a Tuesday night my feelings would be slightly different. I like the Squires Gate because of it's unique proximity to Wren Rovers. I also like The Shovels pub but in all honesty haven't been there in years. Which players do you think will be the biggest threat to Gate? Any players that Gate fans should watch out for? The strikers Battersby, Mason & Cover. What has been the most memorable moment and game for you within your time watching Atherton Collls? Winning the first division title at Cheadle Town in 14/15. Luke Gibson's volley to win the game. Pick that out! The celebrations in the stand after. Players and fans together. Clegg said we would win the league when he was appointed and we did it. An awesome season! Which players will be key for you this season? All of them. If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? Jamie Vardy - He knows what this level is all about. Sergio Aguero - Sheer class Della Ali -Up and coming youngster. To be honest I don't watch much football on the telly now. I like watching Colls really. Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? Been to Squires gate loads of times. First time was in Aug 93 when game kicked off a few mins before 3pm. We were already a couple of goals to the good by the time the clock striked 3. Around that time we only had to throw our shirts on to win the games but as the years moved on I witnessed some tonkings here. The SG has certainly improved since their early days in the league. I remember had a Scottish bloke as a chairman and he was a good talker. John Maguire has been a ever present here, he is a top bloke. Have you ever been to Wembley before? What would be your ideal scenario there? Only been to the new Wembley twice, first time was for the first Challenge Cup Final back there Saints v Catalan and then watching Coldplay earlier this year. Ideal scenario would be a FA Vase victory for the black n white stripes. We are currently 33/1 to win it. Skinny odds me thinks with 128 teams still in the hunt. Nowt wrong with dreaming. Prediction for today's game? I never make a prediction on a Colls game. Never ever!

BRETT DAWSON
In our new regular feature, we ask Gate players 20 questions about football and life in general. This week we caught up with forward and goal machine Brett Dawson (a.k.a Stinger). Brett joined us at the start of the season from Thornton and has settled in well at Squires Gate and already made an impact in the NWCFL. He has found the net an impressive 7 times already this season and will be looking to add to his tally. Which Premier League legends would he pick to play along with in a 5 a side team?
Who was your football hero growing up? The man. Eric Cantona.
If you could play in a 5 a side team with 4 PL legends. Who would they be? Me, Schmeichel, Rio Ferdinand ,Scholes, Giggs
Best moment of your life so far? Ryder Cup 2014 Glen Eagles. Great weekend and getting to play on the courses straight after.
What be your last ever meal on earth? Chicken and rice with nandos sauce. No drama.
If you could change a rule in football what will it be ? It has to be wearing the same colour tape and under armour. I just don't understand that one at all.
Favourite football ground that you’ve been to or played football at ? Wembley. I’ve not played there (yet) but what a ground!
Whose name did you have on the back of your as a kid? Cantona and Giggs were always a favourite, being a United fan.
Biggest career influence? “The King” Cantona.
Instagram or twitter? Twitter
Favourite Three tracks? All My Life - KCI n JoJo Offiah - Trouble Sanctuary Mc Effeezee - Cruising
Who has been the toughest opponent been this year? Maine Road for me. They are a young, fit team and didn’t give us any time or space on the ball and the scoreline reflected that.
Would you rather win the World Cup or Champions League? World Cup
If you could play anywhere but your position, where would it be? Centre half. Show them how it’s done. “Get out of my house!!”
Best chant you've heard at a match? ”Ric Seaars on fire your defense is terrified” - POPWORLD 2016.
THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY…. In our regular feature, we take a look back at the past week in football history from all around the world.
PERFECT PIRLO
2010
On 30 October 2010, Juventus trequartista Alessandro del Piero scored the match-winner against Milan. It was his 179th Serie A goal for the Bianconeri, setting a new club record. Del Piero joined Juventus from Padova in 1993. Initially playing as a traditional striker, he opened his goalscoring account that September in only his second appearance, then garnered a hat-trick in his first start. Juventus went on to win the Scudetto that season, one of five league titles for del Piero, who has also collected four Italian Super Cups, one Coppa Italia, and a Champions League trophy (as well as the 2006 World Cup with Italy). He scored 20 goals in the 2006-07 season, but they didn't count toward the Serie A record as Juventus had been relegated in response to the Calciopoli scandal. Although several high-profile players left the club prior to the relegation, del Piero stayed and captained the club back to the top flight at their first opportunity.
In the match against Milan at the San Siro on 30 October 2010, del Piero's 65th-minute goal proved to be the decisive one as it put Juventus up 1-2, which is how the day ended. It broke the club's previous Serie A record tally, set by Giampiero Boniperti from 1946 to 1961.
1975
IF ANYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY IN THE FOG... On 29 October 1975, Czechoslovakia and England met in a European qualifier that lasted only 17 minutes before a heavy fog forced its cancellation. And they weren't even playing in London. At the time, the two sides were first and second in their qualification group. England were on top with seven points from four matches (wins were worth two points), while the Czechs were three points back with a game in hand. They had already played once, with England winning 3-0 at Wembley.
Czechoslovakia hosted the return fixture at the Tehelne polé stadium in Brataslava. But a heavy fog rolled in and impaired visibility so badly that referee Alberto Michelotti had no choice but halt the proceedings after only 17 minutes. It was only the second time in England's history that they had to abandon a match (the first was 1953 when rain stopped a friendly against Argentina).
The match was scoreless when Michelotti called it off, so they restarted from scratch the next day. The Czechs won 2-1, handing England their first loss under manager Don Revie. It proved to be a decisive result, as Czechoslovakia went on to qualify from the group, finishing one point ahead of England, then proceeded to win the tournament.
MAKING SURE THE FANS GET THEIR MONEY WORTH On 31 October 1987, a last-minute extra time goal in a replay gave Peñarol their fifth Copa Libertadores title. The Uruguayans had reached the final eight times previously and won it four times (1960, 1961, 1966, 1982). And they had impressed on their road to the 1987 final, topping defending champions River Plate and seven-time winners Independiente in their semifinal group. They were up against Colombian side América de Cali, who were making their third consecutive appearance in the final after having fallen to Argentinos Juniors (in a penalty shootout) in 1985 and to River Plate in 1986. The two teams were unable to decide a winner in the first two legs, with América winning 2-1 in Colombia and Peñarol getting a 1-0 victory in Uruguay to force the replay. Playing at the neutral Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile, there was little to separate the teams over the first 90 minutes, or even through extra time. A penalty shootout looked certain when Peñarol striker Diego Aguirre (pictured) lashed a left-footed blast past the América goalkeeper in the 120th minute. The win placed them two behind Independiente in the list of the tournament's all-time winners, though Boca Juniors passed them with a sixth title in 2007. Both Peñarol and América returned to the final once more, but lost both times (Peñarol in 2011 and Améri-

SOWERBY HITS BRACE TO MAKE IT 3 WINS IN A ROW FOR GATE Maine Road 1 Squires Gate 2 SATUIRDAY 2ND NOVEMBER 2013 Report by Mark Ashmore
After Gates defeat in the League Cup last Saturday, they travelled to a Maine Road side who had only lost twice in the league this season and sit at second in the table. Gate started the game full of confidence looking to take advantage of the good surface at Maine Road. The visitors, took the game to the team who were sharing the top spot in the table, and it was Gate who looked like being the first side to score, through a header from Danny Penswick, which went inches over, then Craig Carney’s effort was stopped and Greg Hall pounced on the loose ball. Gate Keeper Ben Fletcher had a save to make, the ball fired of the Maine Road head but Fletcher found himself in the right place at the right time to smartly save with his legs. Gate again worked the ball forward through the midfield and Ben Fishwick found space to shoot from 25 yards, but the ball was cleared. Then a corner from Fishwick found the head of debutant midfielder, Adam Cowen, and despite the home keeper grasping at the ball, he managed to head inches over the crossball. Despite the home side having the wind at their back, Gate’s defence kept solid. And pushed forward, with Seydou Bamba on the left, and Jack Sowerby making runs through the home defence with Jack Cook working hard trying to set up scoring chances. Into the second half and Gate started as they'd ended the ball being worked out to the left hand side to Jamie Bryson how drive just skimmed the top of the crossbar. After a fairly even 20 minutes Gate broke down the right hand side, clever play between Carney and Cook led to a through ball from Carney for Sowerby to finish into the bottom corner on 71 minutes. It was just 5 minutes after his first that Sowerby made it 2, a low ball through to the back post found Sowerby at the back post on 76 minutes. Gate looked to build on the two goal lead and most of the game was played in the Maine Road half. Gate's chances of a clean sheet were given a blow when Richard Williams latched onto a defensive mistake from Squires Gate to score on the 87th minute to make the last few minutes tense.

LAST SEASON
RUNCORN TOWN 5 SQUIRES GATE 0 Gate could have gone ahead early on through Billy McKenna. After good work on the left Rowley sent the ball into
the middle of the box but McKenna connected with the ball but saw the shot saved. Gate would be made to rue their chance, as their hosts would open the scoring. Poor defending from the corner allowed Marvin Molyneux to nip in at the back post from nothing more than a yard out to open the scoring. Town went on to control the game and found the net again 10 minutes later. Rob Ablewhite pouncing on lethargic defending to slot the ball past Fletcher in net. The two goals were enough to wake Gate up and motivate them to move up a gear and start playing their football. But the same defensive laziness would rear its head again after a good spell from Gate. Town captain Paul Shanley beating his man with ease before moving the ball onto his stronger foot and putting the home side 3-0 up. One positive for Gate was there desire to play out of defence and keep possession of the ball. But Gate was almost made to pay when playing at the back Abblewhite nicked the ball whilst pressing but Fletcher saved well after coming off his line. Runcorn would pile on the misery for Gate with the last kick of the first half. Captain Paul Shanley again finding space coming in off the wing to find the back of the net. After collecting their thoughts and re grouping at half time Gate went on to have a dominant second half. Gate collectively as a team kept the ball a lot better seeing large spells of domination. But still the Blackpool side couldn’t find a cutting edge to score there way back into the game. A nice move was building from the back and moving Gate up the field. Debutant Stayte laid the ball of to Buchan who in turn found Rowley but his shot fell wide of the post. The returning Josh Kay had the next chance as Gate began to grow in the game but his shot could on find the netting above the crossbar not below. Sub Aaron Clarke nearly opened his account for the club after picking up the rebound from Ferguson’s shot Clarkes shot went over the bar. Gate’s last chance of the game was probably there best of the game. Billy McKenna lining up his free kick looked destined to beat the keeper, only for Lever to quickly adjust his feet and make the save. Runcorn would condemn Gate to there heaviest defeat so far this season as sub Stephen Milne would best Fletcher to make it five.
