Bacup & Rosendale Borough
The Gaffer Good afternoon and welcome to The Royal British Legion Stadium for this afternoon’s home league fixture against Bacup and Rossendale Borough FC. First of all may I welcome Bacup’s management team and all associated with the club. I hope you feel welcomed and have a safe journey home. Our last outing was a 2-0 loss to high flyers Glossop. I feel we gave a good account of ourselves without really doing enough to win the game. We worked hard and did our best to break them down but in the end we lacked that quality and experience that they had. I felt the goals we conceded were down to our poor play rather than their good play. If we hadn’t have made a couple of basic errors who knows what might have happened. Today however, is going to be a completely different test compared to Glossop. Bacup are fighting for their lives and won’t be pushovers know matter what the league table suggests. Anything we gain from today will have to be earned, our preparation will be key. We’re currently on a good run despite our last outing, having only lost 2 in 19 games. So far this season all squad members whether past or present have been fantastic. They’ve given there all in everything we have done and I hope this continues. I hope you enjoy the game and visit us again for our next home fixture…. UP THE GATE!

GATE’S INPRESSIVE RUN IS ENDED BY HIGH FLYING GLOSSOP Squires Gate hosted Glossop North End on Tuesday night. This fixture was originally scheduled for earlier in the season but was postponed due to bad weather. Gate made just the one change to the team that drew with AFC Liverpool, Alex Colquhoun who was on the bench, has since left the club. Glossop are a team in form this year and find themselves second in the league. They're also into the last 16 of the FA Vase after a 1-0 win over Worksop after extra time. It was a very fast paced start to the game with both sides looking to get the ball down and play football. Glossop are the league top goal scorers so far this season and that was clear to see, both front men causing Gate great problems early on. Gates first chance came when a corner was delivered to the far post to find Sean Holmes but his nod back could find a man in blue. What followed was good pressure from the home side which led to 3 consecutive corners but Gate couldn't capitalise from any of them and the game remains scoreless. Gate had yet another corner shortly after but after the ball was cleared from Glossops box the defending side broke on the attack. But Gate did brilliantly to recover and with just 2 men back managed to clear the ball. The last chance of the game fell to Gates Alex Murphy, but his shot could only sting the gloves of the goalkeeper. Half time Squires Gate 0-0 Glossop North End
Moving into the second half and it was started with much the same intensity as the first was. Both teams looked to take the lead early on but both were cancelling each other out. The breakthrough would come from the away side on 52 minutes Gate loosing the ball on the attack allowed Glossop to counter in numbers. It was Jason Carey who from the tightest of angles managed to squeeze the ball home to give the away side the lead. The goal seemed to knock the wind out of the home side who never really looked the same after it. Gates night would be made worse, 15 minutes later Carey struck again this time from the corner, Carey loosing his marker to nod home his and Glossops second of the game. That is how the game would end both teams looked to add another goal all the way to the ed but neither could manage to do so. After the game Gate manager Dave McCann said: Overall they deserved their win but I'm far from disappointed. The lads gave me what I asked and did their best to get something from the game but in the end that extra bit of experience and quality that they had got the better of us. We'll reflect on our performance, regroup and go again on Saturday. Reported By Mark Ashmore

Bacup & Rossendale Borough Bacup Borough Football Club was established in 1875. Their first match to take place at their current Brian Boys West View Stadium was not until 1889 when one of the founder members of the English Football League Accrington Stanley played there in front of over 1,000 spectators. Bacup’s proudest achievement was winning the Lancashire Combination Championship in the 1946/47 season, this along with finishing runners up after losing to Marine 2-1 in the Lancashire Combination Cup Final. 1972/73 season the club finished runners up in the League, losing out on goal average despite scoring 101 goals. In 1974/75 they reached the Lancashire Junior Cup Final losing 1-0 against Lancaster City, this despite famous victories against Formby, Wigan Athletic, South Liverpool, and Morecambe. In the last ever Lancashire Combination Challenge Cup Final Bacup were beaten 1-3 by Caernarfon Town in a two-legged Final. In the 1988 /89 season under the Management of Gary Warburton the club finished Runners up in Division Two and also finished Runners Up in the Lamot Pils Trophy, they also the same season reached the Quarter Final of the League Cup and due to the Leagues re-organisation the club started the 1989 /90 season as a First Division Club. However, in the1994 /95 season Bacup Borough were relegated back to the Second Division & did struggle both on and off the field. In September of the 1997/98 season with no points on the board and following a humiliating 0-10 defeat by Tetley Walker this prompted the Committee to part company with their then Manager. This then made way for the appointment of the former Doncaster Rovers Assistant Manager, Bury F.C Youth Team Coach, Accrington Stanley Director of Football, & Rossendale Utd & Glossop North End Manager Brent Peters to take over as Manager, a position he has held ever since. Season 2003/04, Bacup’s first season following the Second Division Championship the club finished 14th in Division One and did win the North West Counties League Challenge Cup at Southport’s Haig Avenue Ground by beating Newcastle Town 3-0. Other cup runs saw Borough as NWCFL Challenge Cup Quarter Finalists in 2004/05 and Lancashire FA Co-operative Trophy Quarter Finalists in 2007/08. They finished in 8th Position in the NWCFL Premier Division in the 2008/09 Season. June 14th 2004 brought another land mark for the club when Bacup’s Secretary Frank Manning celebrated not only his 70th Birthday but also 50yrs in the game of which well over 40 years have been spent in administration at his beloved Bacup Borough F.C, This achievement was recognised by Frank being presented with a gold award on behalf of the Football Association by Mr Jim Kenyon the Secretary of the Lancashire Football Association. This achievement brought Frank the position of Chairman of the club, a post he held until accepting the position of President of Bacup & Rossendale Borough FC at the re-branding on June 17th 2013. It was a sad start to the 2011/2012 season with the sudden passing away of Kenneth Peters on the 15th June 2011 and he was also the club president and father of our manager. On the field of play further success was to come with more silverware, this following a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Maine Road in the NWCFL Challenge Cup Final which was played at the Tameside Stadium Ashton in front of a big crowd, the team was captained by Davey Luker. The 2012/2013 season proved to be another difficult time at the club following the sad deaths of people dearly close to the club. Four came in the month of October 12 from which the biggest shock was 27 year old player Bryan Herbert. On the pitch the team once again did well by getting to yet another cup final and this time it was the Lancashire FA Cooperative Trophy Final played at the Reebok Stadium at Bolton. Despite playing a team from two leagues above, Bacup gave a very good account of themselves against team from the Evo Stick Premier Division, AFC Fylde ran out 2-0 winners. June 17th 2013 Bacup Borough officially adopted the title of Rossendale; this came about following the sad demise of Rossendale United FC, thus leaving Bacup Borough as the Rossendale Valley’s most senior football club. They were now the sole flag bearers of the Rossendale Valley and, for the commercial side, it made sense to add ‘Rossendale’ to the club’s name making the club Bacup & Rossendale Borough FC. The new name also brings with it a newly designed crest to form its very own identity, with a plan for progression in place and the words, ‘Prosperity Through Endeavour’ prominently featured. The 2013/2014 season was a nail-biter right until the last game, but with BARB’s place in the Premier Division secured the club is ready to progress with its ambitious plans as Rossendale’s number one football club.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS v Bacup & R.B Saturday 21 December 2013 Squires Gate 3-3 Bacup & Rossendale Borough Squires Gate were looking to pull themselves out of the relegation zone, and the game was going to plan as Jack Sowerby netted the first goal of the game after 20 minutes. Gate had another chance to double their lead as Billy McKenna raced into the box unmarked but tried to walk it around the keeper, and was dispossessed. But soon after made up for his previous effort, as he picked up a loose ball and shot into an empty net. Bacup pulled one back through Gino Mancini before the break as the two sides were separated by one goal. Straight after the break, Jack Sowerby netted his second of the game after slotting home on the 46th minute. However, with only 20 minutes left, Bacup found their way back into the game and got an equaliser to take a hard earned point. Wednesday 2nd April 2014
Bacup & Rossendale Borough 3-0 Squires Gate Squires Gate went over to Bacup in April on the back of an impressive win over Congleton. Gate had the livelier start with constant attacks from Sowerby, Mullen and McKenna. The strong wind was proving difficult for both sides as Bacup couldn’t control their passes, and Gate couldn’t run against it. Half an hour into the game, Bacup took the lead as Bamba deflected the ball into the net. The second half saw the game get more difficult for both sides as the wind increased and visibility became nearly impossible. The home side became quicker on the ball and buried the game as they scored two in 20 minutes. Saturday 27th September 2014 Bacup & Rossendale Borough 3-4 Squires Gate The first fixture between the two sides earlier this season, saw Gate go into the game on a bad run of form as they faced a struggling Bacup side. The visitors soon found themselves 2-0 down after 12 minutes and it couldn’t have got any worse. The 28th minute saw 5 minutes of madness, as Jack Sowerby pulled one back for Gate but it was cancelled out by Bacup through Sam Crook. Jake Forshaw reduced the deficit once again on the 32nd minute. The second half saw Squires Gate have most of the possession as Alex Murphy and Jack Sowerby won the game for the visitors.
