FROM THE DUGOUT
DANIEL PENSWICK “CONFIDENCE IS HIGH AGAIN AND WE HAVE A STRONG SIDE FOR TONIGHT…” Good evening everyone, Tonight we welcome Barnoldswick to the Royal British Legion Stadium in what I'm hoping will be another great advert for nwcfl football. Barnoldswick sit one place above us in the table and are always a strong and competitive side so we should be in for an entertaining game with both sides full of attacking threat.
“We should be in for an entertaining game with both sides full of attacking threat” I was pleased to get back in the points on Saturday and our victory against Cammell Laird was fully deserved. The lads put in a fantastic performance and we knew exactly where we needed to be more organised and corrected it straight away. I was impressed with the way that we controlled the game in most parts and it showed that we can dominate games and win them. I was a bit disappointed with the penalty conceded, as it was a very soft tackle from Ryan and the ref obviously gave the penalty which they then converted. A very good penalty on their part and Ben was well beaten but it would have been good to keep our first clean sheet of the campaign.
“We knew exactly where we needed to be organised and corrected it.” Nobody loves attacking football more than me but over the past few weeks I think we've gone a bit too far with it. We left ourselves exposed and paid the price last Tuesday against Padiham. We just wasn’t up to standard last week but after our win on Saturday, the boys have got their confidence back and we have a strong squad for tonight. Saturday we looked much more compact whilst we were also able to maintain our attacking threat.
“We left ourselves exposed and paid the price” The welcome return or Joe Noblet and Ric Seear were a definite bonus aswell as seeing Seydou Bamba back in the blue of SGFC. Let's hope it's another cracker. Up the Gate!!!

Gate struggled to get going from the start of the game with no real presence up front as an outlet. Padiham looked to control the game constantly using for AFC Fylde striker James Dean as an outlet up top. The visitors almost opened the scoring after 10 minutes. Aaron Taylor meeting Garry Hunters Freekick but his header could only find the crossbar. Just a minute after that Padiham would take the lead. Ben Fletcher coming out of his goal to clear the ball caught the Padiham attacker inside the box. Aaron Taylor stepped up to the spot to out the visitors in the lead. Just two minutes later it could have be 2-0. Gate sloppy with a back pass allowed Taylor in for Padiham but his shot was saved well low down by Fletcher. When Gate did get forward to attack they created some good chances. Alex Mckendrick doing well to get forward on 24 minutes but his whipped cross into the box couldn't find anyone on the end of it. Mark Buchan then he a shot from distance which just went wide of the post. Despite Gates limited spell of chances it would be Padiham who struck again. Aaron Taylor tapping in after the ball was crossed to easy from the right hand side. And soon after the visitors would make it three. Winger Coyne making a brilliant run down the right hand side to escape his marker and fire low past Fletcher. Manager Danny Penswick made two changes at half time with Brett Dawson and Jake Higham coming on for Mark Thornber and Alex Mckendrick and both sparked abit of life into Gate after the break. Gate had an early chance from a corner but that was well defended by Padiham. Just a few minutes after that Gates concentration dropped again. Another loose pass at the back was picked up by James Dean who made no mistake to fire it past Fletcher. Gate would be offered a way back into the game on 66 minutes after a foul in the box. Mark Buchan steeping up to score his third in two games and grab a goal back for Gate. Two minutes later and Padiham could and should have been down to 10 men. Defender Marc Young going studs in on Brett Dawson's mid drift but somehow got away with a warning. Unfortunately that would be how the game would end for Gate who suffered probably their worst defeat of the season.

EDGAR 10 10 R.RILEY CARNEY 11 11 B.DAWSON Gate were boosted by the arrival of Seydou Bamba who would be making his second debut for Gate having played for the club two years ago. His signing would give Gate the ability to move manager Penswick forward into his preferred midfield position whilst Bamba, who played every game for Padiham last season, would offer more experience. Cammell Laird came into the game still searching for their first win of the season and that was clear to see from the start of the game. The home side had an early corner after two minutes which was easily cleared by Gate. They then played some nice football on the edge of Gates box after five minutes but the resulting shot flew wide of the post. As Gate began to settle they began to play the sort of football Gate fans hadn't seen since the start of the season. First Joe Noblet found the feet of Mark Buchan who in turn flicked the ball through the defence to find the run of Brett Dawson, but he was flagged offside. Then Dawson became provider when his clever flick found Ben Seear forward from defence, but that was too quick for the fullback who was flagged offside. Nine minutes later and Gate's persistence would pay off. Striker Mark Buchan grabbing his fourth goal in three games to put Gate ahead. Brett Dawson's shot one on one was saved but the striker did well to recover and find Buchan in the box who finished smartly into the top corner. Despite taking the lead, Gate had to be switched on four minutes later, when Ben Fletcher came to the rescue. A header on goal looked certain for the back of the net, only for Fletcher to dive full stretch and tip the ball wide with one hand. Brett Dawson would have Gates late chance of the first half on 39 minutes. Dawson, who caused the Laird's defence all kinds of problems all afternoon, did well to beat his man but his low drive was fired straight at the keeper. The second half started with a number of freekick's for Gate. The previously mentioned Brett Dawson being constantly fouled but Gate couldn't convert any of the chances. First Joe Noblet lined one up in perfect territory for him, but that was soft and straight into the keepers arms. Then he had another chance three minutes later, but that freekick was put out for a corner by the keeper. Gate again wasting the chance from the corner which was easily cleared at the front post by Lairds. Gate would eventually grab themselves a second on 59 minutes. Brett Dawson grabbing the goal he deserved after Ryan Tanser sent him in behind, the striker rounded the keeper with ease to tap into the empty net and double Gates lead. vLairds would get what would be nothing more than a consolation goal ten minutes later. A corner to Lairds punched clear by Fletcher fell to the laird's winger who drove into the box and was fouled. Up stepped Laird's player/manager Neil Prince to slot the penalty past Fletcher. Gate would then have a penalty or their own on 76 minutes. Brett Dawson causing more problems for the Laird's defence as he tricked and turned his way into the box, only to be tripped. Striker Mark Buchan stepped up to score his second of the game and fifth in three games. And that's how it would end for Gate who got back to winning ways after two losses and moved upto 10th in the league, with two games in hand in those around

LAST SEASON
AFC DARWEN 1 SQUIRES GATE 1 before it found McKenna in the box. Kay again was lively down the left after a good spell of possession from Gate but after his good work to beat his man, his cross was poor. Mckenna on the other wing came into the game but after beating two Darwen men, his shot was blocked. The ball found it’s way over the Ferguson on the left hand side soon after but his shot was deflected wide. Gate best chance of the half came from Kay. Just before half time he struck the ball from outside the box but the home keeper did well to save. The follow up corner for Gate was just headed over by Buchan in what was another good chance just before the break.
The home side had the first chance of the half but Fletcher was well behind the strike. The home side would open the scoring soon after. The ball played across the goal and with Gates defence stood still Darwen pounced and opened the scoring. Gate who had been the better team throughout, continued to attack and had plenty of chances. Gaul, the scorer for Darwen, had another chance but this time it was over. Billy McKenna had Gates next chance but the keeper spilt his shot. Nobody could follow up on the loose ball, which was eventually cleared. Two of Gates substitutes almost linked up to equalise for Gate.
Terry Cummings sent down the line and he found space to play a superb ball across the box but Rowley who was in he middle, couldn’t make contact with the ball. Late drama ensued for Gate as minutes from the end of the game Danny Penswick had a header cleared off the line by Darwen Player/manager Neil Prince. Gates kept the pressure coming and were all over Darwen in the last 10 minutes. They would make that pressure pay with seconds left on the clock, Terry Cummings stepping up to poke the ball home after a scramble in the box.

THIS WEEK IN FOOTBALL HISTORY As part of a new feature, we are going to look back on some famous news that happened in the footballing world during this week in history.
A BIG BID FOR A BIT OF BEST
2006
On 13 September2006, a shirt worn by George Best in a record breaking performance sold at auction for £24,000. The shirt in question was once worn by Best for Manchester United in a 5th round FA Cup match against Northampton Town on 7th February 1970. United won 8-2 with Best providing 6 of the goals, a record haul for the competition at the time. In 1996, a participant in a newspaper competition won the shirt as a prize and then held onto it for 10 years before putting it up for auction at £30,000. The auction included other football memorabilia, including the Fulham shirt worn by Bobby Moore in his last England match (£3,600) and the 1970 FA Cup winners medal awarded to Ron Harris (£13,200).
1965
DEFENCE DOES WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS On September 15th 1965, Inter won their second consecutive International Cup, beating the same team they beat for their first one. They won it the over Argentina’s Independiente in both teams first appearance in the competition. They drew the first two legs 1-1 before Inter went on to win the replay. The same two teams met again in 1965. Inter won the first leg in convincing fashion, beating Independiente at the San Siro 3-0. At the time, the contest was decided on points so an Independiente win by any score in the second leg would send the teams to another replay.
But under manager Helenio Herrera, Inter had mastered the defensive style known as catenaccio. Playing in front of a hostile crowd of 80,000 at La Doble , they practised it to perfection shutting out Independiente for the 4th time in 5 games to claim their second title. The 1965 victory was Inter’s last appearance in the competition, however Independiente went on to win in it in 1973 and 1984.
A GOOD DAY TO TIE
1979
On 16th September 1979, the Serie A season kicked off with 8 matches, 7 of which ended in draws. Goals were at a premium that day, as 11 of the 16 teams in action failed to find the net resulting in 5 scoreless draws: Ascoli vs Napoli, Avellino vs Lazio, Cagliari vs Torino, Perugia vs Catanzaro and Roma vs Milan. The other ineffective attack came from Pescara, who were on the wrong end of the day’s only unbalanced result, losing 2-0 to Inter. There were also 2 score draws, both of which ended 1-1. Fiorentina vs Udinese and Juventus vs Bologna. Other leagues have experienced similar days, with 8 draws out of 11 English 1st Division matches on 10 September 1966 and 8 draws out of 10 matches in the 13th round of the Argentinian Clausura.

.Formed in 1972 and named Barnoldswick United(1972) - so called due to being canny Yorkshiremen- had there been a previous club named Barnoldswick United and they had outstanding debts the new club would have been liable for them. The field started out as a grazing meadow for cattle, after a lot of hard work, it is now the pitch we play on. The club had 2 teams playing in the Craven & District Football League, in the early 1990's we joined the East Lancashire Football League again with 2 teams. In the late 1990's we had 3 teams our 1st & 2nd team teams joined The West Lancashire Football League, our 3rds staying in The East Lancashire League. The 2003/2004 season brought the amalgamation of Barnoldswick United (1972), Barnoldswick Park Rovers and Salterforth Juniors and we changed our name to Barnoldswick Town Football Club. It has always been in the club's constitution to get our ground up to the minimum standards of The North West Counties Football League and the 2009/2010 season saw us accepted into The North West Counties Football League. Alongside our main pitch we have a floodlit training pitch. Our club house can hold up to 100 people and be hired out for functions. Our main sponsor is Silentnight Beds Ltd and the ground is named The Silentnight Stadium. In 2009/2010 our first season in The NWCFL saw us finish runners up in Division 1 and finalists in the prestigious West Riding County Cup beating Guiseley who won promotion to the Conference North along the way. It was an interesting season as we only expected to hold our own and try to make sure we didn't end up at the bottom of the league. Following on from our success in the 2009/2010 season we went from just looking to avoid relegation in the Premier Division 2010/2011 to astound ourselves by finishing a creditable 7th in the league, only suspensions and injuries we feel robbed us of a top three spot. In March 2012 we achieved The FA Grade E, enabling the club to enter The Evostick League when finishing in a promotion position. In June 2014 we achieved Charter Standard. For the 2016/2017 Barnoldswick Town have 1 team in The newly named Hallmark Security League and 1 team in The Lancashire Football League Western Division (Galaxy League). The Junior section has 21 teams in The East Lancashire League from U7's U18's, plus one U12's girls team playing in The West Riding League. They also have a Tiny Town junior academy for 4 - 6 year olds.
LAST TIME OUT
BARNOLDSWICK TOWN 0 RUNCORN LINNETS 2 PREMIER DIVISION / SATURDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER 2016/SLIENTNIGHT STADUIM Barnoldswick had made a solid start to the season and began the day in 9th place, having played two games fewer than Linnets and always pose a tough challenge on their home patch. Kyle Hamid returned to the starting eleven for Anthony Donaldson in an otherwise unchanged side. Wearing their Dutch-style away kit, Michael Ellison's men set about dominating the game from the off but did so without really creating much in the way of early goal scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Barlick's threat came from adventurous long- range efforts. As always, the pace on either flank for Linnets was causing problems for the opposition's full backs, Bev Burey and Paul Shanley running with the ball at speed to try to force an opening. It was skipper Kyle Hamid, who opened the scoring on the half hour. Adam Wade did very well when surrounded by Barlick players on the right touchline to slip away from their grasp and pull the ball back for Hamid. The skipper was waiting in the 'D' outside the penalty box, and when the ball reached him, he calmly swept it goalwards and straight into the bottom corner for 0-1. Mark Houghton had a goal ruled out, correctly, for offside after good play by Wade and Hamid before Barlick got away on the counter attack but sliced an attempt at goal 15 yards wide. The second half was much of the same, Linnets dominating throughout but this time making much clearer scoring opportunities. Mark Houghton headed Danny McKenna's pin point cross wide when well placed, and, not long after, Hamid forced the ball through to Houghton who looked certain to score only for Barlick's keeper to scramble the ball wide of the post.

Houghton deserved a goal for his energy and chances missed and he duly got his just rewards by turning in the most difficult effort of the lot mid way through the second half. Bev Burey won the pace war on the right flank all afternoon and when he got away once again, the winger floated a ball towards the front post that the 'keeper came to gather only for Houghton to nip in front of him. With back to goal, flick the ball over his and the goalkeeper's head and set off in celebration as the ball looped in under the crossbar.
VIEW FROM THE AWAY END
MELLY PARKER
What are your expectations for the seado you think need to be made to improve on last seasons finish?
son? What improvements
We had a great campaign last season but we are just aiming to build on what we have. A top 10 finish would be good, but if we can finish above 8th then I would be very happy. How did your preseason go? I’m not a big fan of pre season, it’s more about the start of the season. It’s fair to say that we didn’t have the best of pre seasons but we did play some very strong sides so it was a good test for us. Did any players impress you? Our players are impressing me a lot this season, we are becoming a very strong side and very hard to beat which is always a good sign. We are slowly becoming more organised too. Are you happy with how season is going at the moment ? There’s no complaints from me so far but hopefully we will improve on last season with the new signings we have made and become stronger as they start to gel into the team. What teams are you looking forward to going up against this season? Any grounds that you enjoy visiting? I look forward to going up against every team in this division to see how they have improved, Congleton is probably my favourite ground to visit though. What has been the most memorable moment and game for you within your time watching Barnoldswick Town? When we beat Guiseley in the County Cup semi final on penalties. 1-1 draw and we won 5-3 on penalties in the 2010-2011 season. Which players will be key for you this season? Joseph Gaughan, Robert grimes, Shaun Airey & Jordan Gidley If you could sign 3 Premier League players on a free transfer, who would you sign and why? Sergio Aguero, I mean who wouldn’t want him in their side? Phillip Couthino and Adam Lallana to add something different to our attacking style. Have you been to Squires Gate before? If so, what was the score? Been to Squires Gate about 5 times now, its not a bad ground at all. If you were manager of a 5 a side team and had to pick 2 Barnoldswick Town players and 3 PL legends. Who would be in your side? Joseph Gaughan, Jordan Gidley, Phillip Couthinho, John Stones & Robert Firminho. Have you ever been to Wembley before? What would be your ideal scenario there? Yes I have been to Wembley; went to old Wembley twice and toured the new one. I would love to watch Barlick at Wembley in the FA Vase. Prediction for tonight’s game? Squires Gate 1 Barnoldswick Town 3

OPPOSITION WATCH Mark Ashmore tells us which players he think will be a danger for Gate tonight. His picks include Arley Barnes, who has been a key part of Barnoldswick for a couple of seasons now. Joseph Gaughan who makes a return to the club having spent time at promotion winning Colne last season. The danger man up front will be Aaron Hollindrake who has had plenty of experience at this level.
ARLEY BARNES
JOSEPH GAUGHAN AARON HOLLINDRAKE
The midfielder does the dirty stuff well. He goes about his business quietly, breaking up the play and being the man before the assist.
The midfielder/striker has returned to the club after helping Colne to promotion last season and he was on fire for the club having scored 11 goals in 11 He’s been at Barnoldswick for games. a couple of seasons and will likely be key for them again He’ll be a big threat for this season. Gate and someone we’ll need to keep an eye on.
Stewart is in his second spell at Barnoldswick Town. After town brilliant season las year he will be looking for more off same this season. Stewart also works hard with the devploemt where his son Shaun is in charge and looking to bring some of the talent star though to the first team this season He led Barnoldswick to a top half finish last season and has bought in some strong signings to improve on what he has done so far.
The big striker has plenty of experience at this level as he has played for the likes of Silsden and Barnoldswick recently. Like Gaughan he’s started the season very well scoring 7 goals in 11 games. One for the defence to keep an eye on as he’ll probably lead the line.

FIVE DIFFERENT SCORERS AS GATE RUN RIOT AGAINST ALSAGER SQUIRES GATE 7 ALSGER TOWN 2 SATURDAY 20TH SEPETMBER 2014 REPORT BY MARK ASHMORE
Alsager made the brighter start in the game looking fired up, looking the more confident and having the best of the possession in the opening stages. And it was also the away side who went ahead early on, a mistake by Danny Penswick who's back pass let in Alsager attacker Josh Gordon in to finish well. It took Gate until the 24th minute to equalise the scoreline, Sean Holmes hacked down on the edge of the box and with the referee awarding a penalty, Alex Murphy stepped up to slot home. Gate looked threatening and again got themselves on the score sheet Danny Penswick rising highest from the corner to put the home side ahead. Gate who could have been ahead even further shortly after but Alex Murphy's couldn't control the ball on the edge of the area, moments later Murphy had a chance to add another goal to his tally but his header found the wrong side of the post. But on 40 minutes Gate would cement thier lead, tricky Harry Dunn using his lightening pace eased away past the defence and finish cleverly slotted the ball past Kurasic the Alsager keeper.
Into the second half and there was a buzz around the ground after Gate had come back from one down to be leading 3-1 many fans were expecting double figures. Gate started the second half like the finished the first, the home side were first to every ball and clearly wanted the win more. The man of the first half Alex Murphy could have added another goal to his collection but his header was saved well by the Alsager goal keeper. It took Gate until the 60th minute to add to their tally, Jake Forshaw meeting the ball first to head past the on-rushing keeper.t would be Forshaw who would steal the headlines, the winger beating the offside trap before a composed finish to make it 5 on the 75th minute. But the little winger wasn't done there, when on the 89th minute he completed his hatrick from the penalty spot. Harry Dunn fouled on the edge of the box and Forshaw was adamant to take the spot kick to make it six for the Gate. The visitors managed to pull another back in between Forshaws hatrick Josh Gordon getting his second of the day. But Gate weren't done for the day yet!! and just a minute after Forshaws penalty Ryan Riley rounded the keeper to make it 7 for the afternoon! Riley's goal means Gate scored seven goals for the first time this season and with five different scorers.
WE’VE MET BEFORE?
BARNOLDSWICK TOWN 3 SQUIRES GATE 0 SATURDAY 29TH AUGUST 2015 Gate made a good start to the game and had the chance to score early on, Wes Benjamin driving forward through midfield played the ball of to Ash Rowley but his shot was saved easily by the keeper. The returning Mark Buchanshowed good strength soon after to hold of his defender and turn him but the shot was agin saved by the goal keeper. Another returning player Alex Colquhoun found the feet of Rowley, he turned his man and found the run of Buchan but he couldn’t latch onto the pass. The home sides first opportunity of the game came after 11 minutes Barlicks winger having a shot from outside the box only to see it hit the crossbar. The homeside’s next chance would be the opening goal. Barlicks right back allowed time to come forward before playing a scuffed pass forward and Barlicks striker slotted past Fletcher to put the home side in the lead. Poor defending from Squires Gate meant the home sides winger found enough space to score at the back post from a tight angle. Gates heads seem to drop after conceding to quick fire goals but it’s far to say that Gate were the better team throughout the first half despite the scoreline. Captain Danny Penswick was trying to lead Gate after the re start and picked up the ball in midfield but his pass through to Buchan was just a little to hard for Buchan to latch on to. Gate went into half time and should have felt aggrieved gate were the much better team with the home side only really having created the two goals. Barnoldswick keeper made 3 terrific saves in the first half to keep Gate out and keep the home side in the lead. The second half was much of the same for Gate who bossed the game but just couldn’t find that bit of luck up front to make the break through. Wes Benjamin made another surging run forward from midfield but again the home side keeper came to the rescue to catch Benjamin's cross before it could find a gate man. Terry Cummigs had the chance the create something for Gate after a superb cross field ball from Richards at right back Cummings bight the ball down with a superb touch and cut inside but his shot was tipped over by the keeper. From the resulting corner Josh Westwood was picked out but his header was again saved by the keeper. Gate tried to break the home side down and get a goal back but barnoldswick stood firm and defend the 2-0 lead. And the home side had the chance to make it 3 late on when they hit Gate on the counter but the shot cannoned of the post, They would make it 3 soon after that, more poor defending from a corner allowed the home side to easily make it 3.
SQUIRES GATE 2
BARNOLDSWICK TOWN 1 SATURDAY 2ND JANUARY 2016 Joe Noblet had a good early chance for Gate but his curling shot went wide of the post. Gate had another great chance soon after a missed Barnoldswick free kick. A good bust of pace from Ferguson to get away from his man down the line, he found Noblet who in turn found McKenna on the right. But McKenna could only find the side netting. Noblet and Buchan again combined well but the latters show when he got into the box was tame. The visitors went on to have a good spell of possession in Gates half but could really threaten with the moving ending with a shot easily saved by Fletcher. Gate made the break through after 17 minutes. Manager Danny Penswick with the corner fizzed into Buchan who had his first time shot of his thigh saved before the ball dropped to his feet and back heeled the ball into the net. As the clock ran down Barnoldswick switched to a more direct style of play and bought Thelfall on changing to two strikers up top. They had the chance after the change to score but Barnes from midfield struck the ball just over the bar. But Noblet would get another chance this time from a little further out. He picked up the ball some 40 yards out before opening fire on goal. The keeper had plenty of time but seemed to push the ball up to try and get it over the cross bar but in turn the ball fell back down off his face and into the goal. This Noblet’s third long range goal this season clearly something he has an eye for. With three minutes added time shown Barnoldswick had a late 90th minutes chance to equalise from just outside the box. But the set piece was cleared by Gate who broke forward in numbers. Sub Tanser steaming into the box and with one of the last kicks of the game fired
the ball over the bar and into the car park.
