LUKE EVANS Good afternoon and a warm welcome to you all. We today welcome our guests from Barnoldswick Town. I was only up there last Friday watching a game and the hospitality and welcome was second to none as always. We arrive at today off the back of a very tricky fixture last time out. Litherland provided tough opposition for sure but mainly the conditions were against us, The wind was so strong that at times we found it difficult to find a foothold in the game. Regardless we came away with 3 points and that’s always the main objective. On to today’s opponents Barnoldswick We know for sure that this will be a tough test for us. Our squad is very bare and we are being pushed to the absolute limit with players but we hope our quality in the right areas will shine through. We are not naive and we know that Barnoldswick have not been in the best of form recently but we know from our own season that a win is always around the corner and we need to pull out the stops to make sure that we aren’t the ones to gift it to them. Our home form has been brilliant winning 6 out of the last 7 scoring 13 and conceding just 5 so we have to use this as a platform to take into the game.

Please cheer us on to victory and support the boys as always. Enjoy the game Luke

JOE NOBLET Speaking to The Gate this week, is former Gate midfielder Joe Noblet. Joe spent a couple of seasons at The Brian Addison Stadium, and Gate fans will remember that day at Ashton Athletic when he netted from 40 yards but the goal didn’t count. “Why?” you ask? Because despite the ball crossing the line, it had bounced off the rail behind the goal and the ref thought it had came off the post. The goal made it to local and national news and you can even watch the video on YouTube! Joe has also been on the TV show Take Me Out.

Speaking to The Gate this week, Barnoldswick Town Fan Matthew Marshall. Matt is also a Burnley Fan and he tells us why he also loves nonleague football, which three PL players he would sign and which 2 Barlick players make his 5 a said team.

Best and worst game that you have seen?

My Dad, although he didn’t attend matches he just always had it on the Tele. Also I remember getting a sticker book for the World Cup in Mexico in ‘86, that sparked my interest. I got into Barnoldswick Town when my lads junior team were mascots, started going sporadically, enjoyed it and now I go as often as I can, home and away. I grew up supporting Burnley

When the fixtures are announced, which fixture do you look out for first? Which teams do you hate visiting, and playing?

First of all, what got you into football, and more importantly Barnoldswick Town? What team did you grow up supporting?

Did you own any football shirts growing up? Who was your footballing idol?

My Dad was a toffee so my very first shirt was an Everton one. I needed one for a soccer school once so he bought me a St Johnstone one off Skipton market which was a bit left field. Several Man Utd ones who I followed briefly before my first season ticket at Burnley. Plenty of Burnley ones. Football idol was and still is Eric Cantona.

Best game was Guiseley away in the County cup semi-final last season. 3-0 down after 20 minutes, we got it back to 3-3 amazingly only to be denied by a last minute header. Worst game was probably Longridge away in the F.A cup this season . 5-1 down at half time and soaked to the skin. The magic of the cup. Used to be Silsden and Padiham who I looked out for but Silsden have moved leagues. Hate going to Burscough mainly due to results!

Any grounds you enjoy visiting? In NWCFL, and in general? I enjoy visiting any new ground as long as I can get a pint and a pie.

What makes non league unique for you?

Having a beer and standing on the terraces with your mates, standing where you want, mixing with opposition fans, watching football with dogs, fans getting a lift to a game with the manager, having a drink and a chat with players who know the fans by name. LOST BOYOS’ TRIP TO BARNOLDSWICK TOWN... could not see the game being on. Numerous game in the Evo Stik and the North West Counites league were called off early Saturday morning, but Barnoldswick’s Twitter account claimed that there was a 60% chance of today’s FA Vase game against AFC Emley being on, but the decision would be made by the match official before kick off. It seemed quite a trek all the way up to Barnoldswick only to be denied a game, but after much deliberation I decided to take a gameshow style gamble – “HE’S GOING TO GAMBLE FOLKS!”

Every week, we look through various blogs and articles that fans gave wrote to try and give an insight to a previous game, or a visit tour opposition. This week, we found this from Lost Boyos’ visit to Barnoldswick back in 2012. Most football fans’ perception of non-league football is the classic ‘one man and his dog’ at a rickety old stadium in an isolated town in the backwater of nowhere. A lot of this stereotype is inaccurate: you will find healthy crowds at non-league and some very plush stadiums from the sixth step downwards.

However, I do love a visit to a non-league club in the middle of nowhere; I’d already made trips to Glossop and Buxton and I considered these to be small isolated football communities, but my trip to Barnoldswick Town took my ‘backwater’ experience to a new level. When two other groundhopping football bloggers (more on them later) stated that they were visiting the small town, I opted to join them, after I abandoned my original plan to visit Barnoldswick about 2 months ago.

The town centre consisted of lots of small cafes, shops and chip shops (highly recommend ‘Chubby’s Chips’) and there was not a single big name store in site – everything seemed to be run by independent traders which was different and good to see. After a brief wander, I came across the Cross Keys pub and decided to have my first pint of the day there. There was only myself, the barman and one other customer in the pub, but pints cost £2.45 and they were friendly enough, so I was happy. The pub reminded me of the pubs around Treharris and Nelson (villages near my hometown in the Merthyr Valley for those unfamiliar) with it’s stubborn, outdated look, but it was large and spacious and had a big TV for sport, so no complaints really.

I brought up the question “So, am I in Lancashire or Yorkshire?” a question that was greeted with glum looks, as the two gentlemen went on a long winding story about the divides in the town and how some locals claim it as Yorkshire, whilst others state Lancashire: ultimately, the story ended with them confirming that the town is officially recognised as a Lancashire town. I also learnt that the town is generally The night before was spent working out how to get to this referred to as ‘Barlick’ by the locals, saving themselves a deserted part of Lancashire – or was it Yorkshire? The internet couple of syllables when talking about the town. I got chatting to some locals at the ‘interesting’ facts about my destination. For example: did you bar, who gave me directions towards Barnoldswick’s football know that Barnoldswick used to be the longest place name in ground, and soon the conversation turned to the ‘Lancashire the UK without repeating any letters? (it is now third) Did you or Yorkshire?’ question. One local regaled with a tale from the know that Barnoldswick is one of the largest towns in the UK summer when two locals in another pub up the road, ended up that is not served by an A-Road? Jack was a Burnley fan living in Malta and he was back home in Barnoldswick for a couple of months to do some work in the midst of his semi-retirement. After chatting for a bit, it became clear that Jack had some brilliant stories about travelling around the country with Burnley FC and around Europe with England from over the years. When I asked him was he linked with Burnley’s infamous “Suicide Squad” back in the day, he just smiled and said “sort of”.

seat in one of the stands in the “Sewer End”. There would be two moments of embarrassment on this day with the first coming during my lap of the ground; with the ball going over the the small fence separating spectators from the pitch, I realised it was coming straight for me; with a second to think, I decided I was going to do a cheeky dink back over the fence back to the team awaiting to take their throw in – I sliced my ‘dink’ and the ball embarrassingly didn’t make it over the 3ft fence. I scuttled away red faced.

We made our way to ground with Jack leading the way through the streets of Barlick towards Victory Park: situated in I eventually met back up with the ‘1 Leg on the Cup’ lads and the heart of Victory Park was The Silentnight Stadium – the me and Tony agreed that Emley, in the yellow and blue, had home of Barnoldswick Town. started the game excellently. I was already quite peed Barnoldswick United and Barnoldswick Park Rovers, merged off to learn that Swansea were losing 3-0 to Norwich at half to become one. Barnoldswick joined the North West Counties time, so my mood was not helped when at half time I was deleagues in 2009-10 after plying their trade in the West Lanca- nied a pie because they had sold out; I had to settle for a ham shire Football League and in their first season in the NWCFL, roll (which was nice in all fairness). Victory Park had three pitches at it’s dow to watch the opening minutes of the second half. Minutes heart with a rugby pitch on one side of the football ground would not be needed for the second goal of the game, as Bar(there was even a rugby match going on during today’s foot- noldswick’s Mark Threlfall surged straight at the Emley deball match) and a cricket ground on the other side. fence before unleashing a powerful low shot into the bottom Jack and I paid our £5 each and entered Barlick’s home. The ground was very tidy for the level we were watching football at: behind one goal stood a sizable clubhouse, complete with bar and food hut, and a stand adorned with a small flag, affectionately calling it the ‘Sewer End’. Down the one side of the touchline was the ground’s mainstand (made of stone) with the two dugouts in front of it. The opposite side of the pitch was completely unsheltered and open to the elements and behind the other goal was a large house overlooking the ground – a great place to live if you are a fan of Barnoldswick Town. I should also add that despite the weather, the pitch looked brilliant and the efforts put in by the club to ensure the game went ahead had clearly paid off. Well done Barlick!

On working our way around to the clubhouse, it seemed like everyone knew Jack as everyone greeted him and shook his hand. As mentioned earlier, the clubhouse was big and one of the better ones I’ve been to on my non-league travels with plenty of tables and chairs scattered around to enjoy our prematch drinks. Whilst Jack was at the bar buying our drinks, I spotted two people I had arranged to rendezvous with: Tony OneLeg and Johnny the Rhino – the duo behind the excellent, and very funny, groundhopping football blog, 1 Leg on the Cup. The lads’ mission for this season was to attend a game at every round of the FA Cup, FA Trophy and FA Vase, a task comprising of 35 fixtures overall and with all three competitions ending with finals at Wembley. AFC Emley play their football in the league below Barlick, so there was a chance that we would witness a “Vase upset”. As the game kicked off, I began a lap of the ground to take some photos, whilst Tony and the Rhino found themselves a

corner to make it 1-1; we were just 19 seconds into the second half. The early goal made the second half a much more exciting and open affair as both teams went for the win (a draw would mean extra time and penalties). Barlick had plenty of chances to make it 2-1 but Emley’s goalkeeper Luke Herriot was in inspired form, with an impressive double save to deny Threlfall and superb low save to stop Lewis Jordan’s header rolling in the bottom corner. It was soon time for my second embarrassing moment of the day: with us happily nestled back in the shelter behind the one goal, my mood had improved thanks to some of my Swansea pals texting me informing me that Swansea had pulled it back from 3-0 down at the Liberty to 3-2 and there was still half hour to go! I was sure we were going to win now.

Emley made two substitutes with 25 minutes remaining and for some bizarre reason one of the outgoing players decided to do a rolly-polly off the pitch – I’ve never seen a showboating exit from the field of play before. The double switch seemed to improve the away team who began to stamp their authority on the game again. Soon after the change, Emley’s Flynn found himself in the box, controlling the ball and burying his and Emley’s second goal of the day past the Barlick keeper. 2-1 to Emley and the players and staff celebrated emphatically. Flynn looked a top player and Barlick struggled to deal with the short, dogged striker all afternoon. Barlick”s goalkeeper, Alexander Woodcock, made a succession of top saves to keep Barlick in the game, but in the 80th it was 3-1 to Emley thanks to an easy finish from sub Doran Jordan.. The ref blew his whistle and the ‘giantkilling’ of Barnoldswick Town was complete.” 13

The visitors went close early on in the game after Gate started the half slowly. A corner almost beat Gidley in goal but Gate had the crossbar to thank. Gate though had there own chance from a corner minutes later though the ball went straight across the box as nobody could get a touch. A freekick in the 25th minute was cleared out as far as Dean Ing, but January's Player of the Month could only see his shot go over the bar. Remy came close again when they had an effort cleared off the line. Down the other end a loose ball was picked up by Josh Pollard he burst into the box and found Gary Pett but he fired wide. Gate then came close again when Cameron Gourley had a shot blocked before Gary Pett again shot wide. Three minutes later and Gate opened the scoring. Josh Pollard fed the ball through Remy's backline to find the run of James Boyd, he took the ball in his stride before calmly slotting past the keeper. The second half saw plenty of chances for Gate but Evans men just couldn't take the chances. Gary Pett took aim from a freekick outside the box but his strike went wide. Josh Pollard then took aim from outside the box but his effort was caught by the wind and went out for a goal kick. A rare Remy chance in the second half saw a corner easily claimed by Gate keeper Jordan Gidley. Josh Westwood was forward for a corner when he was found at the back post, but he could only head over.

AN INTERVIEW WITH GATE’S CENTRE HALF Ryan Riley, they are both tricky players and are good on the ball in tight areas. If I had to choose 3 PL players it would be David Silva, Van Dijk and Ederson. What is the best goal you have ever scored? The best goal you have seen? I’ve never been a prolific goal scorer so I’d say my only goal for AFC Blackpool was the best, a first time volley from a cross. The best goal I have ever seen is Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal against Porto in the champions league

First of all, what encouraged you into playing football? Who did you support growing up? My family has always been involved in football with my dad coaching a lot and my brother playing. I’ve always supported Blackpool growing up.

Do you have any matchday superstitions or rituals that you have to do before a game? I don’t have any match day rituals but I always put my left boot on before my right boot before the warm up. You are the DJ before the game, what is the first song on your playlist? Who has the worst music taste in the team? My go to song before a match would be touch the sky by Kanye West, something to lift the mood before we go out. Hate to say it but worst music has to go to Pollard, he had a few dodgy ones last game.

Did you own any football shirts as a kid? Who was your footballing idol? I had loads of football shirts when I was younger, mainly Blackpool ones. I never had 1 favourite player but I used to What do you usually do before an away game, any Ferdinand and Beckham for the way they would pass the ball. routines? How do you mentally prepare for a game? Before an away game on the way down I think how I want to Can you give us a brief insight into your career? Which play personally and how we played the week before, whether teams have you played for etc? anything needs to change or not. I’ve always been a grassroots player and played for south shore. For the last 3 years I’ve been at pro direct academy Most embarrassing moment as a footballer? training every day. I started my adult career at AFC Blackpool My most embarrassing moment as a player would probably before moving to Longridge Town and now I’m here. have to be an own goal I scored a couple of years ago, from a cross I’ve stuck it in the bottom corner. Was a good finish to be Do you remember your first game playing football? What fair but in the wrong goal. was the score? My first ever match was against Foxhall but I don’t remember You can bring 3 PL players to Gate on a free transfer, who the score. would you sign and why? If I could bring 3 players from the PL to gate it would have to What was the first game you attended as a kid? be Sadio Mane, Bernardo Silva and James Maddison. My first football match I went to watch was for Blackpool. Prediction for today's game? You can pick any player in the world, past or present, to I think even though results haven’t gone our way recently and play alongside with. Who do you pick? we’ve conceded a few late goals the performances have been If I could choose any player to play alongside with it would good and the work rate has been better every game. I’d back have to be Van Dijk, he makes defending look so easy. us going into the game as we have been in good form for the last couple of months. You are manager of a 5 a side team. You can pick 2 Gate players and 3 PL players. Who makes your team? If I had to choose 2 players from gate it would be Pollard and

A PREVIEW OF TODAY’S GAME SQUIRES GATE

BARNOLDSWICK TOWN

Squires Gate beat Litherland REMYCA narrowly last week but showed that they had a solid resilience throughout.

Barnoldwick have only won once in their last 6 games, and they lost to REMYCA at the end of last year.

An impressive home form which has seen Gate continue to be unbeaten at home since November, will be a boost for the hosts today.

However, a rough few games has seen them concede 5 to Congleton Town. Joe Noblet will be relishing the chance to beat his former team mates.

LAST TIME OUT SQUIRES GATE 5

2 BARNOLDSWICK TOWN

Akrigg (28), Egidi (47,69,90) Boyd (90+2)

Dale (12, 52)

Saturday 23rd February 2019 /The Brian Addison Stadium/ Attendance:60 The visitors took the lead in the game from the penalty spot. Zac Dale stepped up to beat Ben Fletcher. Dean Ing came close to scoring a spectacular goal after 20 minutes when he spotted the keeper off his line, sadly for Gate though his shot from the half way line was just over the bar. The goal of the day came from Billy Akrigg who opened his account for the club on the half hour mark. Dean Ing was again involved when he flicked the ball into the path of Akrigg, the midfielder carried on his run straight through the Barnoldswick defence before firing low into the bottom corner. Gate started the second half straight from kick off and took the lead two minutes into the second half. The visitors though replied with their second penalty of the game. A shoulder to shoulder challenge between Staunton-Turner and a Barnoldswick attacker was judged too heavy and the referee pointed to the spot. Zac Dale converted the penalty past Ben Fletcher for his second of the game. Gate retook the lead in the 68th minute when Riccardo Egidi scored his second of the game. He took on his man before curling the ball round the defender and past the keeper. The game was wrapped up in added time as first Riccardo Egidi rounded the keeper who was way off his line to slot into the empty net for his hatrick. Then in the last minute of the game James Boyd was brought down in the box, he stepped up and slotted past the keeper for Gate's fifth.

Peter Parry @PeterParry2 Each week, we interview groundhoppers from all around the world and ask them what encouraged them to start their footballing adventures, his favourite grounds, and the influence behind his Twitter page. First of all, what encouraged you to get into football, and more importantly your groundhopping adventures? I’ve loved the game since I could walk. I was lucky enough to play until I was 41/42 and now coach a kids team. I’ve been ground hopping for past couple of seasons. I like getting to new grounds and talking to new people. What was the influence behind your twitter page? What can readers expect to find on the page? I started the page when I started hopping. It’s a place people can read my match reports and photos. And a place for other hoppers to also share their experiences good or bad. As a groundhopper, you probably buy a lot of programmes. What makes a good football programme to you? A programme is a must for me. I always buy one at each game. I’ve known people who will not go to a game if they can’t get a programme. That’s too extreme for me though. Did you have any football shirts growing up? Who was your footballing idol? Football shirts I had loads, Millwall, Everton, Spurs, Rangers, England. My idol as a kid was Paul Gascoigne the best English player I’ve ever seen live. Which team did you support growing up? What was the reason behind supporting them? Millwall it’s always been Millwall as they are my local side. And I’ve also got a soft spot for my local non league club Fisher. Which non league club to you live closest to? Can you give us a brief insight into their ground, their league, etc? Fisher are my local side they are a fan owned club who were reformed out of the famous old Fisher Athletic club. They have a new ground called St. Paul’s which is across the road from Fisher Athletics old Salter road ground. They currently play at step 5 in the SCEFL league. How many grounds have you visited? At present I’ve been to 83 grounds Do you remember the first game you attended? What was the score? First game was at the den in the old third division. I can’t remember the opposition but John Fashanu played for Millwall. The best game you have ever watched? The worst? In general, and ones that you have attended on your travels? 26

Best game Millwall 4-2 Sheffield Wednesday. The lions 0-2 down and went on the beat a cracking side containing Hirst, Francis, Anderson. What makes non league unique to you? It’s full of one off characters and friendly people. What is the best goal you've ever seen, live and in general? Too many to mention but one that springs to mind is the goal that Kaka scored for Brazil against Argentina at the emirates. He picked the ball up in his own half ran the length of the field beating several players before slotting home. A class goal from a class act. Your favourite grounds? The Den, St. Paul’s, Wembley, Nou Camp What is your usual matchday routine when visiting a new ground? Up early plan my route, decide whether to drive or get a train. Find a pub few pints something to eat then onto the ground. Obviously minus the pints if driving. Have you ever visited any games abroad? What makes the experience different in other countries? Yes I’ve been to the Nou Camp I saw a cracking 3-3 draw against Villarreal. Diego Forlan scored all of Villarreal’s goals. Ronaldinho ran the show scored two and made the other goal. Have you visited any obscure grounds? What made them different to the others? I’ve been to Crockenhill the ground is dilapidated and is in dire need of repairs as is the clubhouse roof. But the clubhouse is superb and well worth a visit. What grounds are you planning on visiting in the next few months? I’m planning on visiting Bearsted, Punjab United, Lordswood as I look to complete the grounds in the SCEFL premier division.

The new record is a game every two days on average. Phenomenal. On 17th February 1957, Real Madrid beat Deportivo de La Coruna to launch a 121 game home unbeaten streak in the league. It was their first home league match since a loss to Atletico two weeks earlier and they responded by beating Deportivo 1-0 with a goal from forward Enrico Mateos in the 25th minute. They then won their last three remaining home games to win the league title, their run consisted of 113 wins and 8 draws.

To help raised some more Funds for this great man Gate will be placing buckets around the ground to help Kenny and His Family reach the goal of 50,00 as he battle with the aftermath of sepsis and Full Leg Amputation. Kenny and his family has already receive lots donations and With help of Blackpool FC last week the have now got to just under £40,000 so why not

show your support by placing any lose change or notes into the bucker around the ground and lets help Kenny reached that goal and help him return to the stuff he love doing.

On Tuesday 7th January 2020, Dave Cram (who many of you will know as ‘Kenny’) and his family and friends’ world was rocked. Kenny had been suffering from some cold symptoms and general feeling of being unwell. On Sunday 5th January, he had played a game of football in a Sunday league match for the Saddle pub in Blackpool and sustained a minor injury, which he assumed to be a strained groin muscle. He complained that evening about how sore his groin was and took himself off to bed. The following morning he and his wife, Keeley, rushed to the walk-in centre where he had excruciating leg pain and flulike symptoms and he was given some strong painkillers and sent home. Less than 24 hours later, after being unable to sleep due to agonising pain, he was taken to A&E at Blackpool Vic by ambulance. There they were told the devastating news that he had an infection, and it was SEPSIS, and he was attached to an antibiotic drip.
